Luis,
the handwriting and fading of the Bretanha registers make for lots of eye
strain! The fathers of both my parents came from there so I research those
books a lot. Let me see if I can help.

To me, it looks like your baptismal date is correct but I can’t make out
the birth — could be the 8th or 28th of May (best guess). Augusto also
appears to be the 2nd of that name in the family. The father’s name is
Manuel de __ Miranda and the mother is Maria Candida. There is a group
of Viveiros Mirandas in Bretanha and one of my lines intersects with them
but I don’t have a lot in my tree just yet. And I can’t make out the
Godparents’ last name either but I might lean toward Carvalho on that one.

I hope I helped a little. I’m sure someone else with chime in with what
they see.

It looks like he was baptised on 22 June 1900, but I'm having difficulty
with his DOB.
Appears his fathers first name is Manuel..surname difficult to decipher. It
appears Maria is his mother but what name appears after Maria ??.
The godfather's name appears to be Antonio Jose - surname illegible. The
godmother appears to be Maria Jose

E, when I first bought a Mac I used BootCamp and found that I didn’t like
booting to either Windows or Mac but wanted access to both platforms all
the time. Plus I had to decide how much memory each operating system was
going to use so if I put too much information on one side or the other I
would run out of space. Making Windows a virtual operating system by using
Paralells on the Mac is easier to use in the long run but takes a little
getting used to in the beginning. There are videos on YouTube that can help
but what it will allow you to do is run every thing in one place rather
than shutting down one side to run something on the other. I’d look into
getting Paralells.

I use Heredis for Mac (there is a Windows version as well) and I just
updated to the 2018 version with no issues. I have used this software since
I switched from PAF about 5 years ago and I have been very happy with it.
Right now it’s on sale until 4/1 at 50% off ($24.99). I can explain more

You can be a free member and get access to the indexes and the full records
when they first are posted online for a period of time. After that you need
to be a full member to see the hi res versions and all the records they
have. So they are giving us some access. The partnership with Ancestry came
as a bit of a surprise to me but I guess in order to complete this project
they need the money to do it and was able to secure it more quickly from
them than from individual donations. I can understand that.

The Fall River Public Library has an obituary index that may be of help.
They have the FR Herald News on microfilm there so if you can find your
relative in the index they should be on film. I need to make another trip

looks like they are parishioners of the church of the Holy Cross*
Born on the 4th day of the month of July, 1832, baptized…*unclear but I
think she was baptized in the same month*
Godfather Domongos da Sylva…*and then there is some mention of other family
members.*

There seems to be a lot more information contained in this baptism than
usual - starting with what I think is a statement that the baptism was
performed at home and then the child was brought to church. If someone can
verify that information I’d really appreciate it. It looks like a few other
churches are identified as well.

Thanks Linda & Bill! I now see that the “s” is really a “d” with a very
short stem. Love the handwriting on some of these priests.

I might want to guess either 30 or 31 January for the baptism date because
I thought I was seeing “trinta” in the words before the acknowledgment that
both sets of grandparents were present. I’m not sure how to record this in
my computer file - leave the date out and write both in the comments or
choose one and say “close enough?”

Things that keep us genealogists on our toes… ;)

I can find everything I need except the date of baptism which seems to be 
obscured by ink bleeding from the other side of the page. If someone else’s 
eyes can make it out I’d really appreciate it. 

After reading (or not reading) all these sacramental registry entries I am 
becoming more careful when I have to write in a Baptism or Confirmation at my 
day job. I wouldn’t want someone’s descendent cursing me out in 50 years or so!

I was finally able to find the documentation on my great great grandparents
marriage but there are two margin notes that I’m having difficulty reading.
The upper is dated 31 March 1862 and the lower is 1864 - everything else is
blurry to me. If anyone can help me decipher this hard-to-read handwriting
I’d really appreciate it.

the marriage is of *Manuel Luiz *(as he is known is subsequent documents
and the only family name I knew of until I started researching), son of
Luis de Costa Caixihno  and Umbelina Thomazina de Jesus (de Costa
Pires) to *Maria
do Carmo* (Martins / dosSantos) on *4 February 1856 at Nossa Senhora do
Rosario in Lagoa*. The desendents in my family go by Luiz so finding the de
Costa surname was surprising but it appears to clear up a lot. Any info is
greatly appreciated.

Heredis and RootsMagic7 are two programs that work on a Mac and an iPad and
can share information between the two. You can also share info with an
iPhone as well. I've used Heredis since I needed to switch out of PAF a few
years ago and I really like it. The program is also available for Windows
but I’m not sure if there is an Android app. In any case you can check it

Since I work with Catholic Church records on a daily basis as part of my
day job, let me just state that the sacramental records we keep are both
public and private. They are private because they were created to record
sacramental events and the personal information contained in them was
entrusted to the church by the families involved. However, they are also
public because they will stand up in civil law situations as valid proof of
one’s identity. They are the property of the parishes that store them and
it in this country it seems to vary from diocese to diocese (and parish to
parish in dioceses with no instructions) as to how genealogical research is
or is not conducted. The only edict that has come down from the "home
office" in Rome is in regards to the LDS Church no longer being permitting
to microfilm the registers and that was in 2008. Some dioceses have
extended that to closing all their records to everyone which is
unfortunate.

I’m totally encouraged that some dioceses are digitizing and allowing their
early, historical records to be published online. It is a painstaking
process and will take some time to complete but will be very valuable in
the long run. But I can understand the frustration of the parish
secretaries who get more requests for records than they can handle as they
try to, in many cases, run the day-to-day operations of a parish on an
increasingly part-time basis. Offering them “a little something for their
troubles” really doesn’t help the situation either - they want to help
folks out but once you do it for one or two the word gets out and they are
overrun with inquiries. I applaud dioceses who have created processes for
genealogists to go through the central archives to do the research, even if
it costs a little up front. If anyone wants to know if their diocese does
that let me know and I’ll check my sources for the information.

And if I can help in any way with understanding these records just let me
know. I’m happy to help where I can.

Catholic Church tradition has discouraged weddings in Advent (December) and
Lent (Feb/March or March/April) because of the penitential nature of the
seasons. Some priests are more strict than others but there is not outright
prohibition during these times. The only time in the Catholic Church where
NO sacraments are celebrated are on Good Friday & Holy Saturday.

The church in Boston, or more precisely West Roxbury, is St. Teresa of
Avila and would have been a parish in 1910. There is no St. Thomas so it
looks like Maria & Antonio were married there. The Archdiocese and the New
England Historical Genealogical Society are digitally scanning all the
record books and will be posting them at AmericanAncestors.com as they
become available. Not sure if they will be get as far as 1910 but keep an
eye out for it. These files can be seen through the free guest membership.

My guess would be Santo Christo since that one is the closest Portuguese
national church. Other churches in the area would be St. Anne (French), St.
Louis de France (French), St. Stanislaus (Polish) and the Cathedral of St.
Mary of the Assumption. There is an outside chance that they could've been
baptized at either Our Lady of Angels (Portuguese) or Our Lady of Health
(Portuguese).

I'm very familiar with the churches of the Diocese of Fall River so don't
hesitate to ask.

I think the marriage record says the bride's father is natural of Ajuda de
Bretanha but I don't see that mentioned in the bride's baptism where it
says "todos" are from Rabo de Peixe. .

[AZORES-Genealogy] Rabo de Peixe - 2nd Marriage of Manuel Martins de Gouveia 1884

It would seem that my great grandfather, Manuel Martins de Gouveia,
legitimate son of Jose Martins de Gouveia and Barbara de Conceicao married
again after the death of my great grandmother sometime before 1884 (I’m
still searching for her obit). The fading and writing is so fine that I’m
having a hard time getting the bride’s info and parents. Also, there is no
mention of Manuel being a widower - is that common? This all came as a
surprise because it was never mentioned before.

As usual, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!

Looking for help with what is written in the margin - it looks like it
could be her wedding to Simão de Souza but I’ve found that register entry
and the date doesn’t look like it would match. Also, these entries don’t
seem to contain the grandparents’ info - is that correct? Finally, is that
a title before the father’s first name or another name I’ve never seen
before?

We’re trying to decipher if the margin notes in the original image post are
regarding her marriage to Simão de Souza. The margin date is 1809 but the
marriage entry is 1811, unless I didn’t get that date correct. That’s why I
included it in the thread to get a second opinion.

I’m sorry you had that experience, Celeste. My sources tell me that
particular rectory is a bit of a mess personnel-wise so I’m not sure they’d
go the extra mile to look in the files. Parishes need more encouragement
like what we’re doing in the Archdiocese of Boston to get them to give us
genealogists a good helping hand.

Apollina (or Apolinaria as she is referred to in other documentation I
have) was born. I have combed the Rabo de Peixe baptisms from 1846 to 1860
and can’t find her so I’m thinking she may have been born and baptized
nearby. I can’t read the writing and can’t seem to make it darker on my end
so if someone can give it a go I’d appreciate the help. Since I just got
the results of my mtDNA back I’m really working on tracking down my
material lines.

Good note, Celeste - it tells them exactly what you are looking for.
Whether or not they decide to share the info will come down to feeling as
if they are compromising the confidentiality of the family or not wanting
to start a precedent that will get them more inquiries that tax their time.
I’d also include a phone number you can be reached at because some parish
workers are either not technologically savvy or they will want to check out
a live person before they make a decision to share.

It never hurts to ask but since it seems you’ve been down many roads before
this one it might finally be the right time and place.  Good luck and let
me know what happens.

To someone who can help me:
I have been trying to find information about my husband, Robert E. Perry’s,
family for the last 20 years. I have been unable to find a baptismal record
for his paternal grandmother, Maria De Christ Moraes.
I have found baptismal records for her siblings in Lomba da Santa Barbara,
Sao Miguel, Azores; however, there is no record of her baptism.
Passport information for 1908-1909 no longer exist. I have not been able to
find her date of entry in the United States.
What I do know is that she married Filippe Perreira Da Silva on November
27th, 1909 in St. Mary’s Church, Bristol, Rhode Island. I have a copy of
that marriage record.
I have recently been told that at the time of marriage birth, baptismal and
previous marriage documents were collected and placed in closed files along
with premarriage questionnaires in case an annulment is sought later on. I
have been told that Maria would have had to provide a baptismal certificate
from the “old Country” before the marriage.
Is it possible to search those records to find the place and date of
Maria’s baptism? In addition, I have seen some church books where
information of this type is written in the margin of the marriage record.
Although I have a “Certificate of Marriage” from St. Mary’s, I do not have
any note of anything written in the margin. Were any notes written in the
margin of the marriage record?

I work for the Catholic Church and the information you are seeking would
probably not be found as a margin note (though stranger things have
happened) in the marriage register but will show up in the pre-nuptual
paperwork that every couple has to provide before the marriage can take
place. Birth, baptismal, and previous marriage documents (if any) are
collected and placed in closed files along with pre-marriage questionnaires
in case an annulment is sought later on. Your Maria Cristo would have had
to provide a baptismal certificate from the “old country” or be baptized
“conditionally” before the marriage (something we don’t do anymore) so
there would be a record. Getting into those sealed records is not

My hope is that someone would be able to visit the church, ask to see the
Marriage Register and photo copy any margin note that would have been made
to confirm that Maria De Christ Moraes was baptized and where that took
place.

This family did have two Maria born to these parents. The first one I was
unable to find as having died or having moved or married anywhere near the
village of Lomba da Santa Barbara in Sao Miguel. She was born in 1868. MC's
last son was born after1921 which would have made MC at over 40 years of
age. The second Maria died shortly after her birth. I have not been able to
find any more children named Maria born to MC.

Again, the oral history MC's daughter told me MC was born May 22, 1885 and
was that she was 5 years old when her father died. Her father died in 1899
so she had to have been born (if she was a biological child of this
marriage) before 1899 and some time between the birth of her brother Jose
(1883) and the death of her father.

I have confirmation of her father's death and of Jose's birth dates.

Again, I have spent days looking at the record books in the archive in
Ponta Delgada, S. Miguel looking for MC's birth or something that would
give me a clue as to whether or not she was biologically born to this
family. I have no doubt she was raised in this family and she "thought" she
was biologically from this family. Proving this has become an over 25 year
journey for me.

Yes, you need to get the marriage book
from Holy Rosary (I'm guessing that's probably the
church they married at, since many Portuguese married
there). Call them and ask for a photocopy of the book. If
it's too large to photocopy, then ask the church
secretary to take a picture with her cell phone and text or
email the picture to you (and make a donation to the church
to keep them doing genealogy requests for others).

You have traced her in
the Federal censuses as well as the RI State censuses?

Was she an alien or
a citizen by 1940? If she was an alien, you need to get her
alien registration. If she became a citizen, you need that
paperwork.

Fall River should take Boston’s lead eventually but they will need to be
convinced that this is a greater good. My sense from speaking personally
with some of the priests is that they want to be sure their records are
being used by the families involved for genealogy purposes only. They take
very seriously their canonical duties to protect the people’s information
they are given. Unfortunately some LDS folks might have spooked the
parishes into locking down their information. With Boston going forward
with this Fall River will be watching and waiting to see what happens.

Providence, however, will be another story altogether…

Some of the script and hyphenation are throwing me off. If someone could

Here’s what I understand:

Wedding date -  28th day of the month of August 1803
Groom: Manuel de Medeiros, son of Mathias de Medeiros and Maria Francisca
Bride: Leocádia de Jesus, daughter of Joam de Sousa and Vitoria 

I’m also not as familiar with the verbiage of the older documents so any
help there would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for your

Then there's something going on with the Sao Jorge confession rolls. I
didn't understand what Jeremy meant last night (long day) and I was
trying to playfully tease him, but he took it the wrong way and I made him
mad. Sorry!! He tried to send me a link for something on the mainland, but
the Google Group blocks me from the link. So I still don't understand why
Sao Jorge island has no confessional rolls on the CCA when Joao Ventura,
the archivist, who was in charge of the scanning a few years ago, had
EVERYTHING scanned.

This hit and miss thing has a history to it. Historically, no vital record
system really existed. Luckily, the Azores are heavily Catholic and they
recorded baptism, marriages, and deaths, so that was a kind of vital record
system. In 1911, there was a change in government and the Civil Registry
system was created. It's like the vital record system in America. That was
great from 1911 forward, but they needed something for the people who were
born, married, and died before 1911. So the government went to the local
Catholic churches and took the books to create the vital record system.
Since they were interested in birth, marriage, and death, they took the
books that concerned those events. The confession rolls did not concern the
vital record events of birth, marriage, death. Why some were turned over, I
don't know. Maybe a couple of priests did genealogy and understood the
value. Note: They way the government went about obtaining the books wasn't
done tactfully. The people from the time period of 1911 stated that the
government came and "stole" the records from the Church. One priest in
Bretanha on Sao Miguel island gave the government all of the books except
the earliest baptism book which he hid under his bed when the government
came in 1911. Today that book is still at the church and NOT in the
archive. It's been 106 years now. I wish someone would talk the current
priest in to handing that book over for historical preservation. However, I
think George Pacheco and John Raposo has extracted the baptisms out of that
book when they have gone there.

Then there's the whole Hatfield and McCoy feud that goes on between
Terceira and Sao Miguel islands. Sao Miguel wound up with the "capital" of
the Azores on their island, and Terceira wound up with the Diocese seat.
These decisions were made in the 1500s (maybe the 1400s). So that's 500 or
600 years ago. Someone wanted both the Diocese and the capital on their
island and it didn't happen that way. And it made some people mad. And this
has gone on generations and still affects us today. It is my understanding
that certain airlines can fly into Lajes on Terceira and others can go into
Ponta Delgada. If one island allows an airline, the other one won't. So if
we want to get to Lajes on Terceira, you have to fly out of Oakland or
Toronto or something. You can't get to Ponta Delgada from Oakland. You have
to get to Boston to get to PDL. Same thing with the CCA. The CCA is in the
archive is on Terceira. The server is in the archive on Sao Miguel. When
the server goes down, no one tells the CCA on Terceira. We just look at our
computers with the time-out screen. So one of us has to email the CCA who
has absolutely no idea that the server went down. Then there are the scans.
I'm pretty sure Joao, the archivist asked all 3 archives to scan the
original documents in color. Angra and Horta did as he requested. But Ponta
Delgada on Sao Miguel? Nope, they went ahead and scanned the microfilm.
That comes out in black and white. The scans from the other islands are
better because of the contrast of the original (and that they were

Hi Paul,
Manuel seems to be the child of an adulterous relationship since I cannot
see any mention of his father and this grandparents are incognito. I was
once given the tip that in some instances the father ends up being name a
godparent in order to have some spiritual responsibility for the child so
maybe there is a hint there.

I had a great uncle with an pai incognito at baptism whose ligitamacy was
recognized two years later when my great grandparents finally got married
--- one week before the birth of their second son! I guess these types of
situations have been around for centuries. Makes for interesting
research... ;)

happen to know what that means? As far as 4th level

essential to constitute this relation, that they spring from the same
common root or stock, but in different branches.” *Sounds like everyone on

Margaret - yeah, I couldn't read that either but the year date is definitely 
1885 because I found the marriage entry that confirmed it. Also, they married a 
week before they had their second son, Antonio, so that was a help, I guess. ;) 
 

Linda, I'm not familiar with the terminology on that consanguinity. Can you 
help me understand that?

Bretanha no longer exist. All that we have is an index, with many gaps, put
together by a vicar in 1723, of the deteriorating registers he found in
Bretanha when he arrived. Many records had already been lost, some were
partially obliterated, and as I said, there were many gaps. I have had some
luck connecting many lines back to the 16th century using that index, but I
also have my share of Bretanha dead ends.

I’m looking at trying to understand Mathias’ father’s middle name (Antonio
Calvo is clear but that’s it) and I think his mother’s name is Victoria de
Aguiar. It looks like the date of birth is 21 December 1731 but I can’t see
the baptismal date or if there are grandparent names. It appears it might
only be godparents names. I’ll appreciate any and all assistance with this
one.

Cheri & Rosemarie— thanks for the definition of “Calvo” although it would
seem that the Medeiros Grota men in later centuries seemed to retain a full
head of hair far into retirement. :) I will say that I have a LOT of
Antonio de Medeiros men on my tree and keeping them straight does drive me
a bit mad.

Margaret — It didn’t dawn on me that the “Dom” was also a clergy
designation. I work of the church and am very familiar with the various
ranks and titles. D’oh!

As I continue backwards in time I guess I’ll be looking for both the de
Medeiros and Calvo names. I just wish the handwriting was better on the
eyes…

I really want to follow them into the mainland because I’m wondering if
they are my Jewish connection - it’s just a hunch but I’m willing to track

I think it looks like Andre Gracia, which is a variant of Garcia, if I
understand rightly.  If you look at the "C" in "nasces" (right after
Maria's last name), it's the same as in "Gracia".  The "a" looks like an
"o" to me too, but I'm fairly sure it's an "a".

As for Maria's last name, at first I couldn't make it out at all, but then
it snapped into being: "Tereza".  I could easily still be wrong, so others
should weigh in too!

[AZORES-Genealogy] Another Bretanha Baptism puzzle - Grandparents of Antonio de Medeiros 1852

Ok, here’s a brick wall I’ve been trying to crack for years. The surnames
of the maternal grandparents in this document are different than the little
information I have had on them. Here is their grandson’s baptism info —>

I’m interpreting the last name of Andre as GROLIA and Maria as SENRA (I’ve
had them as GARCIA & ALVES from other sources) but I’ve never seen names
like this before. Since they appear to be from the mainland I have no
experience tracing anyone back there so I might need some help. Please tell
me if the names are correct and how I can best follow the trail next.

Fading pages and fading eyesight don’t mesh sometimes. I think the baptism
date is 7 May 1871 but I cannot make out the birth date at all before the
parents’ names. If someone can decipher this for me I would be grateful.

what little I have I can gladly share but I have more ancestry than descendants 
for that branch of the family tree. It seems we are related through Manuel 
Medeiros Grota & Maria Francesca Moura - he is the brother of my 2x great 
grandfather Antonio de Medeiros. I have very little info on that line so maybe 
between us we can fill in some gaps. 

One piece of information I was told when I began my genealogical addiction 
about 15 years ago was that all the Medeiros Grota's from Bretanha are related 
so that has been a huge help. I'll gladly share what I have on them if it will 
be a help to you. Just let me know!

Hello folks,
I've seen many of you in the group talk about your visits to the Açores - the 
place you've stayed and the contacts you've used to get around the island - 
never thinking I would ever need more specific details. Until today. My husband 
surprised me by saying that he'd would like to take me to the Sāo Miguel this 
year or next for a vacation (read: genealogical quest) and asked me to plan it. 
I know exactly where on the island I'd like to visit (Bretanha, Rabo de Peixe, 
Lagoa, Furnas) but I know we'll need someone who can get us there and hopefully 
into the churches for research. I'm hoping our collective brain trust can put 
me in the right direction for such an adventure. 

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your knowledge!
