[Dx4win] DX4mac

2007-02-19 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
My windows box finally died and I replaced it with a McIntosh Imac20
which runs a dual Intel processor and will operate with Parallels
software to open a Microsoft Windows 2000 or XP window on the Mac
that hopefully will run DX4win and WriteLog with Yaesu FT1000MP.
Another possibility is Boot Camp which will boot a full Windows 2000
or XP system partition on the mac, but is kind like booting a dos
partition to run CT.

Has anyone done this that would share their results, configuration,
problems, and particularly the usb to serial adapter used with the
radio.

[Dx4win] Logging Time

2006-03-16 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
The HELP file says the time is calculated from the time zones you put in the
Windows operating system.

My computer is on local time and the log is GMT and it automatically updates
for Daylight Savings Time. In earlier versions you had some additional
controls on time, but the present implementation (V7) seems to do it
automatically. Judging by some of the time and date problems in very old
paper logs, this is worth the price of the program alone!!!

[Dx4win] service

2005-08-23 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
I believe Paul's support is extremely good.

I would also like the Winkey support and would be willing to pay an upgrade
fee to get it.

I paid the last upgrade fee for the RTTY support, but have not had an
antenna up since I moved so have not had a chance to use it yet, but felt
the upgrade was a really good one. In my previous correspondence with Paul,
he sometimes does not agree on the way I think something should work (colors
and multiple qsl managers and sources), but has always been open to
discussing them with me.

This is another area where DX4WIN excels. You have a problem, a question or
a suggestion, send an e-mail to either Steve Bookout , NJ4F or Paul van der

action. Let me illustrate this: when I asked Paul if he could possibly
integrate a "super check partial" system using CT's MASTER.DTA file, he
answered within 24 hours by sending me a Beta-version program which did it!
No promises, but action!

Why whe get no answer on suggestions ?

[Dx4win] QSL Managers

2005-06-14 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
It would be a real benefit to have more than one qsl manager shown. 1) The
one that came with DX4WIN 2) The one that came from the GO list 3) The one
that the DX station gave me and I entered 4) The one that was there when I
sent the qsl card. Preserved forever in the notes for this QSO. Since that
is probably unreasonable, a different color for the source of the manager
would be almost as helpful.

The cost of qsling is so high that anything that would help this situation
would be a worthwhile addition to DX4WIN. My work around has always been to
try to put the actual station callsign in the notes for this qso, so it does
not change from time to time.

[Dx4win] QSL managers

2005-03-06 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
It would certainly be nice (and save me a lot of postage) if DX4WIN could
handle the following with background colors for multiple qsl managers:

1) Furnished with Program
2) Found in Go List
3) Added by me
4) Card was previously sent to this qsl manager.

It would be nice if the previous date the card was sent was preserved when
the card was marked for qsl a second time, since this date is normally lost
unless you manually enter it in the notes for this qsl. If the program did
this automatically, it would save a lot of work.

Handle separate CW and Phone qsl managers easily.

[Dx4win] Missing DXCC Confirms with 604

2005-01-23 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
Alan, I am really surprised. I have over 1600 band countries confirmed and
usually only show one or two that change. I trace those down and usually
always find that it was due to the country being improperly entered in the
first place. Jim offers a procedure on his web site to allow you to find
out exactly what the problem is when one exists. If you have very old
contacts (up to 50 or so years) in your log, there are many opportunities
for error since prefixes were made up by operators, and the FCC has
re-assigned prefixes for US territories, and similar events. Each and every
one that I have found, Jim has carefully added these exceptions to the new
database. I seriously doubt that ANY program data base is as good, so I
don't know what program you would move to that would be as accurate. This
data base is provided with DX4WIN but it is maintained at n/c by Jim.

Let Jim know if you have found a problem that would benefit other users.

This is a really irritating "feature" of DX4WIN. It would be MUCH more
sensible if the program saved the DXCC country for each QSO in the log
file itself, and just used the reference file to give you a suggestion
as to where a new QSO fits, something like the "super check partial"
files, or even the country reference files, in a contest logging
program. Having to review your Q's to see if the country reference has
gotten screwed up every time you upgrade the program is an incredible
pain in the butt. This is the biggest single complaint I have about
DX4Win, and if I ever decide to move to a different program, it will be
for this reason.

[Dx4win] ADIF Import of LOTW

2005-01-22 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
That would be a wonderful addition to DX4WIN and you have described the
necessary settings that would be useful.

Although you can do replace existing data now, that is not nearly as useful
as letting you be asked on a per-item basis. Since many people who send
records to LOTW do not seem to know their zones, etc., a wholesale replace
is not advisable and will quickly foul up the countries database exceptions.

[Dx4win] External database verses qrz.com on the internet.

There are so many problems to doing that, it will never happen. Hundreds of

it will work on most of them, but they seldom have qsl managers.

A, but if you take a look at Logger 32, a freeware logging program,
you'll see that it automatically looks up a callsign on the internet
through QRZ.com and places it in your logging fields - automatically - no
intervention required other than entering the callsign. Magic. Wish that
would happen in DX4WIN. No CDROM, no "steps" required - just enter the
callsignand it's free.

[Dx4win] LOTW Upload Confirm/Submit/Awarded

2004-06-10 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
NO! It is not even practical. ARRL did not use the same calls in their
list that they had previously awarded for the DXCC awards. I had previously
carefully entered the QSO that was approved by MODE and BAND as they were
approved. When they went to LOTW, they used the most recent one that they
had approved for you. The LOTW data does not include the information to
know from each confirmed contact what award it was actually credited. The
following is an example:

TX0DX
20M
SSB
2327
051106
Y
20040516
512
32
56
OC176
QH90

This QSO was credited for BAND, but not for SSB Mode, but you cannot tell
that from the QSL record. The actual credited information is available on
the site, otherwise the award data could not be calculated on the ARRL
website. Most of us have kept up with this information for many years and
have it correctly stored in DX4WIN at this time.

There are actually two parts to this, though.

1) The adif import for LOTW download (with INCLUDE QSL DETAIL block
checked) could be improved in DX4WIN to allow import since LOTW records
contain IOTA, DXCC Country, state, gridsquare, cq zone, itu zone, qsl date,
and county data same as a paper QSL in addition to the confirmation and some
of this data is only available from a QSL card unless we can get it from the
LOTW record. Again, it would be a disaster if you could not check each and
every piece of data before using it. Believe it or not, many stations DO
NOT know their correct Zone, etc., and the LOTW QSL data is absolutely WRONG
is these cases.

2) IF ARRL makes the WHERE CREDITED data available in the QSL downloads,
then Paul might consider importing this data into DX4WIN, but it would
certainly require a separate program to import this into the log AND ALLOW
YOU to determine that you wanted to accept each and every piece of
information as it would destroy old records that are more accurate (although
now dated) than the LOTW information.

While I suspect this is going to be a nightmare for a short
time, does anyone know a trick for getting the ARRL LOTW
"Awarded" information into your DX4WIN database?

I completed the "roundtrip" to get my ADI download and
import it using "duplicate QSO sets Upload Confirmed"
which is great, but those are also Awarded and I can't
seem to use filters (10m, Upload Conf = Y) to do a mass
QSO update. So it seems like I need to do a Submission,
which will be a mess since I would need to manually set every
QSL that was previous done (prior to DX4WIN and LOTW, too).

It "feels" like I have years of work ahead of me to get LOTW and
DX4WIN in-sync, since DX4WIN will need me to specify the
specific QSO that was submitted and awarded and that detail
doesn't seem to be readily available electronically.

Ideas?

Writelog is optimized for contesting. So many windows are different for

[Dx4win] What is the hold up?

2004-05-23 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
The upgrade didn't cause me any problems.

The upgrade from 6.01 to 6.02 to 6.03 was free.

I have owned every single version since DX4WIN first came out and each and
every upgrade was definitely worthwhile. www.ad1c.com has a detailed list
of the upgrade hints for those who want a few more details on the upgrade.

As far as I am concerned for dxers the best Logging Software is DX4WIN and
WriteLog for contesters who need a windows platform. Both have excellent
upgrade policies and DX4WIN is normally the easier of the two to upgrade and
get running.

This last upgrade includes one of the best country lists for dxers that I
have ever seen. Jim (AD1C) with help from others has researched calls,
dx-expeditons, re-assigned calls, etc., going back over 50 years and
provided DX4WIN users with a free country list upgrade that is better than
available with any other dx logging software. It also upgrades all of the
IOTA data, and QSL manager data. Be glad the DX4WIN and WriteLog
reflectors are there for those who need them.

[Dx4win] Installation Tips

Jim (AD1C) has good tips for installation on his website:

Jim also did a fine job on updating the country file which is included with
the new 6.03 version of DX4WIN. It is so good that I would NOT merge your

updated the QSL manager file, so that it is NOT necessary to merge the old
QSL managers.

[Dx4win] Log File Transfer

2004-05-19 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
Copying anything to CD's is not without problems. The files become read
only files when you look at the properties, and you have to change them back
to read/write files. Most logs and the save directory can be zipped and
will fit on a 1.44 floppy. That is easy to move to the new computer and
unzip in a backup directory. That said:

I would run the old DX4WIN on the old computer and write the DX4WIN ini file
to the save directory which is probably DX4W602/save. This saves most of
your preferences.

I would write the entire save directory to a cd, then write it back to a
backup of the save directory on the new computer. Change all file
properties in this new directory back from read only to read write. You
original log will be in this directory as should be your call.key keycode
for DX4WIN.

Install the new program. Import the dx4win.ini file through preferences,
copy your key file to the new save directory and copy your log to the new
save directory. You should be good to go. The new country file is good
enough that I would not import my old country file unless you want to import
the qsl managers.

[Dx4win] 6.03 woes

No, but we may not have the same computer, operating system, printer,
parallel or USB printer connection, or printer driver that you have. Post
some more information on the problem you are actually having including error
messages and configuration. Paul will need as much information as possible
if there is a problem in your configuration.

DX4WIN, like almost every Windows program, for Windows 2000P and Windows XP,
has NO direct access to your printer. That is handled by the Windows
Operating System and the related printer drivers.

I am running Windows XP Pro on an old 1300 Mhz Homebuilt Athlon, through a
Local Area Network to My wife's P1000 computer and using print sharing to
print QSL labels on a Cannon S600 printer. I just printed a page of 30
labels with DX4WIN 6.037. I then went back and used Custom Label 2 which
prints directly on my QSL cards in Landscape Mode. I printed 2 cards.
Everything seems to work ok for me.

I normally use the EPSON 2000P to print directly on QSL cards because the
ink is fade resistant and water proof. I have many old cards printed on ink
jets that are quite faded.

Preferences and changed nothing in the printer setup. QSL print recognizes
my printer and I show 2 QSLs to print, but I get an "exception" error
message no matter what I do.

Has anyone else had a print problem?

First and most important, thanks to Jim, AD1VC. I upgraded and did not have
a single error in my countries total in upgrading the countries list. So far
as the new version it will take some time to get the feel but I am
optimistic since I have never been disapointed. However, things are not all
pie in the sky here. Although I merged my ini file I am still getting a demo

[Dx4win] CW DXCC dilemma

2004-04-26 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
I also asked about this several years ago; however, it really did not turn
out to be much of a problem.

Initially, I selected the valid qso's for submittal. The very few that were
left were then simply marked as invalid and in the notes as invalid for CW
DXCC.

My cw qso's went back to 1955 and I only wound up with a handful of them
marked as invalid. I doubt that it would be worthwhile for Paul to fix as I
have been through the logic Paul uses for marking qso's for DXCC submittal
and there simply are no dates in them. The logic is pretty straightforward
and that is why the searches are so fast. I did not think of using my group
selections, and I would not have had to mark a few cards as invalid.

If you use DX4WIN for tracking DXCC totals, I wonder how you handle this
situation:

A DX station (new country) was worked in 1973 on 40M CW. The station is
credited by ARRL for the mixed DXCC, but not CW DXCC as the cutoff for CW
DXCC is 1975. So the question is: how to mark the QSO so that DX4WIN shows
it as "checked" for Mixed DXCC, but not "checked" for CW DXCC? I don't even
want it to show up in DX4WIN as confirmed for CW, or I won't get an accurate
spot color. What to do?

[Dx4win] Start and Finish times

I sure hope it has a switch so it can be disabled if that feature is added.
I looked back on nearly fifty years of logs and only found qso end times
listed in the first few years of logs where long ragchews were logged. This
may be a requirement in the UK, but fortunately it is no longer a
requirement in this country.

[Dx4win] Confused About Spot Prioritization

2004-02-11 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
If you are working for 5 band DXCC, try a different approach. Work every
spot you see that is priority 1,2, or 3. Turn off the modes for DXCC that
you are not interested in such as digital modes and cw. Priority 1 is a new
country that has never been worked before on any band, so you need all of
those. Priority 2 is a new Mode, and for most of us that is a lot higher
than a new band country, so you normally need all of those unless you do not
work a particular mode, which you can turn off in preferences.

Be sure that the DXCC tab in preferences is set for the modes, bands, and
separate band awards that you wish to go for. The worked cutoff and mailed
cutoff can be temporarily set to 20,000 to be sure that is not affecting the
spots you want. There is also a button in preferences called DX alerts that
affects the spots that you want. 5 Band DXCC normally comes to those that
work and confirm countries routinely on the easy bands, then you spend all
of your time counting the 40 and 80 meter confirmations, then eventually 12,
17, 30, and 160 meter bands. DX4WIN makes the record keeping effortless,
though. With LOTW, the time to get the award should be much faster, but the
cost is still high.

p.s. you can change the color scheme of the spots, but I would do that only
as a last resort. Setting preferences correctly is a much better way.

[Dx4win] DX4Win 6.x Questions

2004-01-29 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
Question 1 and 2: You can change them back the way they were, and I did. I
would think a line would be difficult to implement and would allow less
spots for the same size window.
Question 3. It is the priority of the spot and is not removable (although
the column can be made small)
Question 4. Check preferences and be sure it is pointing to the go list
directory under external data in preferences.
Question 6: Guess some of us have different opinions. Since F2 is now used
for confirming a qso and Alt F2 is used for confirming an SWL qso, I
personally think it would be very confusing to have an Alt F2 do anything.
When I have a large stack of qsl cards and am using the F2 key to search and
mark many qsls at a setting, the present use of F2 is really nice and fast
to simplify what used to be a very tedious chore.

Since I normally only use the Mark QSLs for labels for DXCC as a global
marking, this works very well, but usually results in marking way too many
qsls if you don't do it very often. I wish it would show me the redundant
ones and their qsl managers and let me pick the one or two to send, but it
is so MUCH better than manual methods, I doubt that a change to the software
would really benefit many people.

That said, Paul listens well, and then makes the decisions that he thinks
will help the most DXERS (buyers) and implements those changes. I have
owned DX4WIN since it started and it is still the best DXCC program out
there.

4 - I can't get the GOLIST function to work. F3 in the callsign window
used to bring this up, but doesn't anymore.

5 - the tcp/ip connection. how can I get it to automatically log me in
to a specific site and perform functions (i.e., log in, sh/dx,

how to go it.

6 - the single use/choice for F2 key has been an issue for me. I spoke
with Paul about this at Dayton 2 years ago to no avail (although I
thought he was interested!). My idea is that F2 is for "mark for label"

Bands worked = 18 - 28 - 7 - 24 MHz

When I got to "reports" - "DXCC" - "all" and zoom down to ZD9, I find

It has my 7 MHz and 24 Mhz bands as confirmed with a C.

It does not show that I have worked the 18 and 28 MHz bands, yet, I
have them in the log. All 4 QSO's were entered the same.

What happened and how do I get the report to show the "W" as worked for

[Dx4win] DX spot colors revisited

2003-09-03 Thread Wendell Wyly - W5FL
I doubt that Paul will ever make these colors user programmable for the
priorities. I think the order you laid out for 1) never worked 2) never
worked mode 3) never worked band will satisfy 90% of the DX community. The
unconfirmed mode and band are neat touches, also. Paul spent a period of
several months getting the never worked band as a reality, and that has
helped me more than any other improvement in DX4WIN as getting bands worked
for anyone chasing MIXED, PHONE, and CW (or RTTY) takes a lot of work
without this improvement working properly. After a while there are not many
never worked left. The logic used by DX4WIN is pretty straightforward and
as best I can sort it out, depends on the priority order for the searches to
be very quick (and it is).

Yes, I agree with your order. I confirm DX to the ARRL requirements and do
not care for having to work every band in all modes as that requires working
Dxepeditions too many times, but there are those that want to work every
band on both CW and Phone and RTTY.

I think I boiled the priorities down to three simple rules:

1. All-time never worked has the highest priority.

2. When both entities are unworked or both entities are
worked but not confirmed, mode has priority over band.

3. When one entity is unworked and the other is worked
but not confirmed, the unworked entity has priority
 over the worked entity.

The priorities I suggested earlier seem to embody these requirements:

   1 = never worked
   2 = never worked mode
   3 = never worked band
   4 = unconfirmed mode
   5 = unconfirmed band

Does this make sense to everyone?

[Dx4win] Confusion over "checked" awards flags

2003-02-26 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
ARRL treats them the same. You can probably work around the problem by
doing a 5BDXCC submission, exporting the logfile, make a new log of just
these qso's, do a regular submission so they will get marked correctly, then
import them back to your log replacing the duplicate qso's.

[Dx4win] Confusion over "checked" awards flags

2003-02-25 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
First, be sure that preferences are set correctly for your station and DXCC
modes. Look at a DXCC summary report. It should show how many countries
you have Checked by ARRL for each band. Submitted is marked for those
contacts automatically tha are included in the DXCC submittal. Let me know
if you have any other questions after looking at my summary report for all
bands and modes and yours. I just got back the report from ARRL for the 738
submittals I just made and they will be converted to Checked once I have
gone through their comments. DX4WIN really works well on DXCC submittals.

Given enough time, I might be able to figure this out myself, but I'm sure
one of you has already been through this so will just ask in order to save
some time. I converted to DX4WIN about 18 months back and imported all my
log data from the previous logging program (running 5.03 now). When I did
that, I went through the QSOs that had already been credited for my DXCC and
marked them all "Checked" in the Mixed DXCC award flags. So, when I look at
the DXCC summary report, the right number of countries appear as Checked.

Now it's time to submit for 5BDXCC and I attempted to prepare a submission,
but DX4WIN tells me that it won't include 4 of the bands because I'm already
credited for 100 countries on those bands, which is incorrect. So, I look
at the DXCC listing report and take a look at the line for 3B6. It shows a
"C" for the bands 30 through 10, because a QSO marked confirmed=Y exists
with 3B6 on each of those bands. Only one of those QSOs has the DXCC Mixed
awards flagged set to "Chkd". It appears to me that DX4WIN is counting all
such QSOs as "Checked" even though they have not been.

Can someone tell me what I'm missing? All QSOs that have the DXCC Mixed
awards flag set to Chkd show up as a "*" in the listing, and I assumed that
DX4WIN would only count THOSE QSOs as already checked.

All ideas appreciated!

[Dx4win] Print on Back of QSL Card

2003-02-15 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I don't think everything that you wish to do can be done by DX4WIN or any
program for that matter. DX4WIN separates PSE and TNX qsls but not SSB and
CW unless they have different qsl managers. I have room to print about 5 or
6 qso's on my cards and that is only a limitation of my cards. The main
problem is to be sure you have a printer that will pull your qsls in from
the short end and handle a stack of them. I use an EPSON 2000P which uses
archival pigmented inks and they will last a long time and not fade. Your
printer ink may not last forever.

I use it to print all my qsl cards and it works just fine (V 6.02 that is).
The info below is caused by me having to fool my printer, so you will have
to experiment with the spacing, etc., but it works well.

It's hard to explain, but there are those of us who like to work every
country on every possible band/mode combination. It's a sickness, I'll
admit it.

Here's how I think of the colors (sorry, no priority numbers for me):

DU9RG is spotted on 40 meter CW. I have never worked DU on 40 meters,
so the spot is bright red. So I work him for a new one. Now if
DU9/N0NM is later spotted on 40 meter CW, the spot will be light red
(worked but not confirmed on this band). Doesn't matter if it's spotted
on SSB, same will apply, since it's not confirmed on this band.

[Dx4win] Green on white spots

2003-02-05 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
What you are missing is the recent changes in the DXCC program that now give
credit for 18 separate DXCC awards.

This is the game for many dxers.

Modes for MIXED, PHONE, CW, RTTY are the primary awards up to and including
DXCC Honor Roll. Bands from 160 meters to 2 meters and Satellite qualify
for 5BDXCC and endorsements for an additional 6 bands as well as the DXCC
Challange award. I am not aware of any of these programs that require you
to work every mode on every band. That is what the green and white
discussion has been about.

Mode DXCC is band independent(there is not a 5BDXCC for PHONE or CW) -
(thank goodness)!

The details of the various DXCC awards that are properly tracked in DX4WIN
are listed below:
-

1. The DX Century Club Award, with certificate and lapel pin is available to
Amateur Radio operators throughout the world (see #15 below for the DXCC

(at a charge of $35.00 US plus shipping).

r) The DXCC Challenge Award is given for working and confirming at least
1,000 DXCC band-Entities on any Amateur bands, 1.8 through 54 MHz. This
award is in the form of a plaque. Certificates are not available for this
award. Plaques can be endorsed in increments of 500. Entities for each band
are totaled to give the Challenge standing. Deleted entities do not count
for this award. All contacts must be made after November 15, 1945. The DXCC
Challenge plaque is available for $79.00 (plus postage). QSOs for the 160,
80, 40, 30, 20, 17, 15, 12, 10 and 6 meter bands qualify for this award.
Bands with less than 100 contacts are acceptable for credit for this award.

s) The DeSoto Cup is presented to the DXCC Challenge leader as of the 30th
of September each year. The DeSoto Cup is named for Clinton B. DeSoto, whose
definitive article in October 1935 QST forms the basis of the DXCC award.
Only one cup will be awarded to any single individual. A medal will be
presented to a repeat winner in subsequent years. Medals will also be
awarded to the second and third place winners each year.

t) Honor Roll: Attaining the DXCC Honor Roll represents the pinnacle of DX
achievement:

i) Mixed: To qualify, you must have a total confirmed entity count that
places you among the numerical top ten DXCC entities total on the current
DXCC List (example: if there are 335 current DXCC entities, you must have at
least 326 entities confirmed).

ii) Phone -- same as Mixed.

iii) CW -- same as Mixed.

iv) RTTY -- same as Mixed.

To establish the number of DXCC entity credits needed to qualify for the
Honor Roll, the maximum possible number of current entities available for
credit is published monthly on the ARRL DXCC Web Page. First-time Honor

[Dx4win] Green on white spots

2003-02-05 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I like the way it is now, but would always take a new definition and a new
color that did not affect this one.

I personally do not understand the band mode combinations that are never
worked before as this just seems to insist that you work every dxepedition
at least 15 times (22 or more if you consider RTTY) when over half of these
will never count for anything with ARRL or CQ awards.

I would be happy with an endorsement for 160 and RTTY if I ever just confirm
100 of them.

Hi,

I have received a number of direct emails, and read a few on the reflector,
asking that the definition of green on white spots be changed. Currently
(6.02), it makes no difference if the new band/mode combination is confirmed
or not. The suggestion is to only use this priority for band/mode
combinations that are new (never worked before). Ideas, objections?

[Dx4win] Lost everything

2003-02-04 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I am sure you are aware that DX4WIN keeps the last copy of a log with your
log name.~xl, so loss of a log is normally not possible regardless of what
happens. Simply keeping a copy of your save directory, zipped or unzipped
takes only a second and my log is over 15,000 contacts and zipped will fit
on a floppy. A simple ctrl c and ctrl v on the logfile and .cty file will
always save a copy of your log using windows explorer. Sorry you did not
know all of this before. The other files in the save directory should also
be saved, particularily the .cty file. For only a few hundred contacts, you
can right click the log window and print the entire log on paper in
landscape on 4 or 5 pages.

[Dx4win] Moving Log file

2003-01-29 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
You can simply install the new version and you are ready to go.

There are four things that most of us want to do, though: 1) Move your old
logbook where the new version will know what was in it and convert it to the
new format. 2) If you wrote out all of your preferences before the upgrade,
they are stored in a file called DX4WIN.ini (or whatever you called it).
When you merge the .ini file, it puts all of your preferences (except those
that were not previously used) into the new program so that you DONT HAVE to
do it manually. 3) Over the years, you have probably made a lot of callsign
exceptions (like K1B) and you can move all of those forward to the new
version by simply merging the only country file. You (or I) would not want
these things dones automatically as there are a lot of considerations to
make when setting up the logging software and you probably DONT want to
merge the IOTA database from your old system, since the new one is more
current. You may want to keep all of your old QSL managers and addresses as
they are important to you and the merge allows this to happen. 4) I want my
old report files rather than the new ones and I had to put the $$ back in
contest mode to record the exact frequencies for each contact, which I want
to keep in my log.

Paul give some good information on the upgrade process, and fortunately
leaves the decisions to the DXer rather than the programmer, on exactly how
the upgrade is to be accomplished.

I certainly don't consider this starting over or doing it all manual.

DX4WIN.CFG file is incompatible with Version 6. Copying it will do no good.
You must go to Preferences in V5 and write the .INI file, then merge this
into V6 from the same menu. Make sure to look at EACH preferences tab after
doing this, as some of the settings don't transfer (like ICOM radio baud
rate). Paul added some new awards flags, and those may not transfer properly
either. 2. There were some changes to the DX4WIN.CTY file to corrrect
county names. You will lose these changes if you over-write the V6 file with
your V5 file. It's best to merge the CTY files, which DX4WIN should do
automatically when you upgrade. 73 - Jim AD1C = Jim Reisert AD1C, 7

Writelog is good at generating Cabrillo. If you watch the writelog

[Dx4win] Newbie question

2003-01-23 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
DX4WIN will do a multiple marking of qsl card sent and will mark them with
the date of the qso. To use this, you need to get all of these contacts in
the filter (not necessarily an easy task if they are not within a date
range). You can mark one date, do a ctrl a on that field, and then paste
that date into each previously sent qsl card in the qso window. Otherwise,
you are better off to export the log, put it in EXCEL, mark all of the dates
you want to and then put it back in DX4WIN with a little manipulation to get
a space deliminated file and build a import filter.

Is there a way to enter that a QSL has been sent, WITHOUT
entering a specific date? I'm the guy with 12K+ manual entries

that they were. In most cases they were "stockpiled" and sent to

I think a simple "SENT" field with "Y/N" would be better than having
to enter a specific date.

[Dx4win] New Install Won't Open

2002-12-12 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I would try downloading the program into a directory different from the
install directory. The download is about 2.5 megs and it creates two files
when unzipped that have to be in the same directory (they are intended to be
put on two floppies where needed). Then run the dx4win.exe file and allow
it to install in the recommended directory.

You need to give a little more information as there are thousands of new
installs that work correctly, if that is what you did. The basic things
that you need to do when changing computers is to write down each and every
com port with irq, baud rate, and protocol as wellas any parallel port used
with what is was hooked to so you can get the new one to the same condition.
It is normally better if you turn off all radio control, tnc inputs and set
all of the controls to off in preferences, then export the dx4win.ini file.
With the new configuration you input the .ini file and make the correct
preferences for radio control, tnc, cw keying, etc. Did you do a clean new
install of an operating system on the new computer? Had it ever had dx4win
installed on it before?

How about File/Databases/QSL manager addresses?? This puts them in the

want the log printed using the report editor. Works like a champ; however,
keeping a few backups safe on a CD or floppies that include all files in the

[Dx4win] DXCC Award Submission problem

2002-10-04 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
That is true now, but I just sent ARRL over $100 with my submittal last
week, which included re-submitting many many cards that had been previously
submitted and ARRL did not record the band until several years ago. ARRL
does not accept less than 100 cards with the first submittal. I believe
they have dropped the minimum cards that have to be submitted.

DX4WIN also credits you for MIXED, BAND, and MODE for any card that you
submit IF you have the DXCC preferences set up correctly. I do not know
what you would want the author to fix. The program won't submit cards
automatically (like my 30 meter cards) where I only have 91 confirmed until
I get 100 or more.

If you don't tell ARRL which qso's to credit, you will be charged for each
and every qso on the cards you submit, whether you have already paid for
them previously.

will have the separate awards available.

Subject: [Dx4win] DXCC Award Submission problem

Hello all,

I'm running DX4Win 5.03, and trying to get dx4win to generate my first
submission list for DXCC. Everything looks in good shape with the the
Reports->DXCC->Listing and Reports->DXCC->Summary showing plenty of
confirmed totals. When I ask it to generate a Submission via
Reports->DXCC->Submission I get an blank list. All the flags for every
award is clear. Has anyone seen this before?

[Dx4win] Printing Log pages?

2002-10-03 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
If you really want to print a paper log, the best thing to do is write your
logbook as a comma deliminated file, then open it in EXCEL. Fix it just the
way you want it and print it out of EXCEL. That way you can control
margins, type font and sizes, etc and get lines drawn on the page, titles,
footers, page numbers etc.

I have a small log compared with many and my log would print over 500 pages.
I choose to keep mine on cd rom for safety.

You can set the log up in the logbook window to get the correct amount of
columns by how you arrange the report editor and logbook window. The set
the paper to landscape and it does a credible job IF you have used the
filter to limit the amount of qso's to be printed.

I'm just new to the program, but feel I have developed a fairly good grasp
of its functionality over the past week. Importing my log from the previous
logging program worked flawlessly.

In attempting to print a few pages from my new DX4WIN logbook I notice there
doesn't appear to be any control over page setup for printing -- it this
correct? The left margin is about 0.75" but the right margin seems to be
non-existent. The logbook layout that I've created extends off the printed
page -- how do you force the page to either recognize a right margin or size
your logbook to fit nicely on a page? There appears to be no controls for
this setup. The printer is an HP 4 and I'm setup for landscape printing.

Any and all help would be appreciated.

[Dx4win] CTY Updates

2002-09-27 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
The basic country file (dx4win.cty) has not changed since the 5.03 version
that included Ducie Island. The bad news is that a country file for dxing
must reflect your own logbook and be maintained by you as you work different
countries. My country file has all of my personal exceptions going back to
1955, but it is different than someone else who has been dxing for the same
amount of time. The program has the capability to import your old country
file each time a new country file is distributed so you can add all of your
personal exceptions.

[Dx4win] Group Names was changing my call sign: dx4win questions...

2002-09-16 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
It is a little tricky. I just set up a selection for Colleyville where I
lived 22 years ago. Do a filter/selection, then add - type in a new
selection name. Pick out which group names fit that selection, then click
update, then ok. You can check the filter number and watch the colors
change in the dx spots window. Then select any report such as dxcc summary
and it will only reflect the selection which in my case I named Colleyville
and included in it the group that represented Colleyville. It works
perfectly and took me from Honor Roll on CW, Phone, and Mixed to 165, 174,
and 224. Guess I have added a few in the last 22 years!

Using Selections is a superset of the group numbers and is what you are
looking for to get all of the reports to match your Carribean operation.
Play with it a little and you will get the hang of it. Let me know when you
get it to work properly.

Sure. Simply use the filter to select the desired group. With this group
selected, all reports ONLY reflect that group. A very nice feature. Go to
Filter/Group Selection. Use the pull down menu to select the group for the
Caribbean and then everything will work like that is the only log you have

Doesn't seem to work for me. I've tried this before and that's why
I asked. Here's what I do:
1. Select group number using the filter - in this case group 8
2. Logbook window now reflects just those QSO's made in P4-land for
Group 8.
3. Go to reports on the log window and select dxcc and summary.
Report is for group 0 - my home QTH log. Numbers do not change
Based on what group I have 'filtered'
I'm perplexed :)

Wendell,
Do you know of a way to get reports based on group number? For example,
I'd like to find out my DXCC totals for group 3 (trip to the Caribbean).
I can't see how that could be done. What I get are the DXCC totals for

There is an easier way. If you go to preferences where I have set the
labels tab to print the greeting as@@ 73 de %% email [EMAIL PROTECTED]

This will automatically print PSE or TNX QSL, 73 de Group Name Call and
then my email address. If you have a vanity call then the correct call
will be printed on the label if you name the group name correctly. My
group names include the location, so mine will print W5FL Weatherford,
Texas for all calls from my present qth and W5FL Jamul, CA for all calls
from my California QTH, and all other qths and calls that I have
previously used. Do the same thing for swl greeting Thanks SWL report

The group names is a wonderful feature and not used by enough people. It
is also very powerful since the same calls window shows the group names
and then you can always print the qsl card correctly for more than one
call or location. It helps if you have more than one call to stick the
label on a QSL card with the correct call in case the receiving ham did
not read the label carefully enough.

I have never tried sending a card from more than one group name, but for
PSE and TNX being different, the program is smart enough to print the
information on two qsl cards.

Ken,

I did three things when my vanity call arrived:

1. Set a group with the previous callsign - so the group name said "as
WB8BGO". This is very helpful when entering a QSO-in-progress. You can look
in the "same call" window and you can see whether you worked him/her before,
and under which callsign. During the QSO, you can immediately say (or type
or send... ;-) "we've worked 3 times before, twice under my previous
callsign and once under my new vanity call..." or whatever. Don't rely upon
your memory or math skills to figure that out during a QSO... gets worse as
time passes ;-)

2. Modified my QSL label printing comments to say "previously WB8BGO" - so
when I print a card for any QSO, it has this little comment on it. _IF_ this
card involves multiple QSOs, split between the new and old callsigns, I
will use a highlighter, and highlight the "previous callsign" comments, then
highlight the QSO that involved the previous call.

3. This might sound a little corny, but I entered a new QSO with myself and
my new vanity callsign. I created a log entry on the date I started using my
new callsign. Whenever I'm trying to remember when I switched callsigns, I
press , enter my callsign, and see the date of the "QSO". (ummm... to
avoid any award confusion, you can press a few times and enter this QSO
as an "invalid" contact in the "ValidDX" field.]

Study the help files on seting up and using group names. This will allow
you to print qsl cards with the correct call and make it immediately obvious
in the same calls window which call you worked the station with. I use them

[Dx4win] Do these prefixes need changing and comparing ARRL and DX4WIN reports?

2002-08-03 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Hi Larry, Yes, I have noticed the differences quite often when trying to
compare the Official ARRL DXCC Printouts to DX4WIN. There are a few more
than you listed, but I was not aware that it was possible to change them.
How do you do this?

I just received an electronic copy of my ARRL DXCC printout where a
correction had been made. Unfortunately, it is Adobe Acrobat pdf format and
they cannot supply the native format (which might be more useful). Does
anyone know any reasonable way to put pdf in a usable format (EXCEL, rich
text format (rtf), comma deliminated, etc) where it can be directly compared
with the DX4WIN countries worked listing? I have quite a few
inconsistancies in the two lists and would like to research them without
doing it all as paper compares - which are extremely slow for 2000 band
countries. Also have to fix all of the different country prefixes to do
this.

If anyone has the software to do this, I will be glad to send the pdf
formatted document to you as it probably takes at least Adobe Acrobat 5.0
( I have the full version 4.0) and that may or may not allow conversion to
Rich Text Format (rtf). I can also send the DX4WIN report listing for
comparison. Every way that I can find to do the conversion costs lots of
money and is intended for big corporate users. I have considered scanning
the printed output and then doing an OCR, but that is not very clean either.

Any Ideas?

I recently went over the official ARRL DXCC countries list
and compared it to the list you get with F1 in the countries field of
DX4WIn.

Here are some changes I would like to make.

1. Antarctica is listed as CE9 in the DXCC list, KC4 in DX4Win.
The only reason to change that is to maintain the same alphabetical
order as ARRL.

2. Franz Josef Land is listed as R1FJ in the DXCC list, 4K2 in DX4Win.
 I only have 2 qso's - R1FJV and UA3PAC/P
Since 4K2 doesn't appear to be used shouldn't it be changed?

3. Malyj Vysotskij Is is listed as R1MV in the DXCC list, 4J1 in DX4Win.
Again I have 9 qso's with R1MVI recently and would like to change this
on the basis that it's in actual use.

4. Ukraine is listed as UR in the DXCC list, EM in DX4Win.
This one is very confusing - I don't know where EM came from.
My Ukraine qso's mostly start with UR.
It's easier to associate UR with Ukraine than EM.
EM is frequently used as a prefix for Antarctic stations!

All the rest are close enough and keep to the same alphabetical order as
the official ARRL countries list.

I would change these in my personal countries database.
Does this make good sense or am I tweaking needlessly?

Your comments please.

[Dx4win] QSL Method All Messed Up!!!

2002-07-29 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I'm sure if you can describe the exact logic in what you want, Paul might
consider programming it if he feels that it will help other users.

The way it works now, is that you select an award that you are trying to
get, then it lets you pick how you want to qsl for that award. You are
allowed to pick the number of days since you qsl'd before, and DX4WIN will
qsl them again depending on how you select for the qsl to be sent. This is
different for mode, country, and new band, and sends a card to all possible
contacts that fit your criteria. If you are a contester, it may send out
more cards than you intended.

This works for me the way it is, but you can select each qso and mark them
individually. If you set the F2 key to mark them for a label D'direct, then
everytime you hit the f2 key, that qso will be marked for a label Direct.
There are several options for the F2 key, so read them carefully so you will
not also confirm a qso with it also.

I don't agree that the QSL method is all messed up, but I sometimes wish it
had a little more logic in it to help optimize getting a confirmation with
the least number of QSL's sent, which normally would be via a manager in the
states for me as a first choice, a manager overseas as a second choice, and
direct overseas as a third choice.

The F2 key is designed to easily handle bureau cards and allows you to
simply hit one key to confirm the contact and mark the label to return the
card via the bureau. Nice feature.

The program comes up with all groups selected. Under filter/selection, use
the selection editor to name the group or combination of groups that you
want to use. Then select the group (or groups you put together like
Australia being all groups where you lived in various parts of Australia or
were portable that count for Australia) you want and all data in all windows
including the spot colors and reports will reflect the grouping you have
selected. It is a very powerful tool, but most users have not used it
enough to see how neat it works for situations like you described.

Subject: [Dx4win] QSO Grouping and DXCC

Hello DX4WIN all users and in particular those who are experts.

I have been using DX4WIN ver. 5.01/5.03 for almost two years and I am very
happy with it, except for a few things.

This is my first enquiry and obviously I have kept abreast with the
questions and answers and have generally feel comfortable with the program.

I now have finally entered my previous paper log qso's and now can
concenytrate on other issues.

I have established 8 groups which represent the different QTH locations as
portable operations and also qso's as P29IO and I have group 000 (All QSO's)
selected when entering information for the current QSO.

These groups show up in the "Previous QSO window", which I can refer to
during the current QSO, which is all very nice and fine.

What I would like to know is is it possible to have the "Country and Zone
Windows" which I also have on the display to show the DXCC and Zone status
for selected groups.

That is, I want these windows to show what is still required to be worked
or confirmed for this location, home QTH Grid Square, for any DXCC or other
award application for groups 1,2,3,5,6, not 4 and 8, as the last two were
for location outside this grid square or generally this QTH and so would not
apply to any DXCC (or other) award I am chasing from my home QTH.

This question also applies to "Reports/Summary etc", although I know I can
create a Customised Report and select a (one) group to do this, I would
like to know if this can include multiple selected groups.

I have some other issues, but these two question will do for a start, if any
one can help.

Thank You

Ron, vk3io

Hi all,
I recently upgraded computers, which included a change from Win98 to
WinXP (Home).
I am having a problem with WinXP shutdown, where the system hangs
at the "Windows shutting down" screen, and I have to unplug the
computer to actually power down. It happens intermittently, and I'm
trying to figure out which app. may be causing the problem.
While I'm not certain, I believe it only happens when I've had DX4WIN
running prior to shutdown. Has anyone else had similar trouble?

[Dx4win] Internet Spot not listed as needed.

2002-07-08 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Odd thing, but some of the cluster software insists on putting the country
code in the remarks column. DX4WIN looks for several key words in the
remarks column to set the mode. Some of these are PSK, RTTY, and FM. You
were just bitten by software incompatabilities between the cluster software
and DX4WIN software. Wait for the next DX contest and work French
Martinique (FM) on every band in one weekend, and this will no longer be a
problem. Get your Extra as it makes cw a lot more enjoyable.

Hi Everyone. This is my first real week of using dx4win after converting
from dxbase. Life has become instantly easier.

However, I have noticed a problem with internet spots. I'm a CW only op and
have my prefs setup to reflect that under all categories. A spot came in
this evening:

DX de N4ZH: 7002.9 FM5GUDennis, Qsl via KU9CFM 0040Z
VA

It was listed as gray, i.e. not needed. However, a quick check of the memory
banks and the logbook shows that I do in fact need this country on 40m. (not
that I can work him.. at least until I get my extra)

Clicking on the spot and then typing CTRL-L to listen, set the radio to
7.002.9 FM, not CW. I'm guessing the spots are being parsed for information
in the notes field, but perhaps it's parsed as a whole. In which case, the
FM prefix was used as the mode.

Has anyone else seen this behavior?

[Dx4win] Importing dBase logs

2002-07-07 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I keyed in all of my paper logs in EXCEL when I bought DX4WIN as it was easy
to manipulate the data to get all of the notes, frequencies, etc. I set the
typeface to courier new to get a constant width and then set all of the
columns to auto width. I had to actually create two logs, one for cw a and
one for phone to get the RST to work correctly. Export the logs in comma
deliminated format, import in WORD and then export in .prn format. I then
built a filter to exactly match my columns with DX4WIN and imported all of
the qsos. Watch the errors during the import to tell you where you have
problems in your filter. The entire process takes about 15 minutes if you
have to do it over 3 or 4 times.

[Dx4win] Talk window popup?

2002-07-06 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I don't think you are missing anything. Just leave the talk window up there
and the only time you will be anoyed by it is when you are doing something
else and you are automatically returned to DX4WIN. I have not tried
filtering Talk messages in the tnc or cluster, but that might be an option.

I wish there was a way to stop those that don't know how to send a talk
message from posting it instead as a bogus spot!!! Maybe Paul will give us
a filter for 14.000, etc. The next time I want to know that someone got a
P5 qsl card, I would just like to ask them. Maybe someone needs to suggest
that they get a copy of DX4WIN and use the local spot posting capability and
then they and only they will ever see the spot. Guess other software does
not have that built in test capability.

Guys:

I am using dx4win 5.03. I use the packet window for my rf connection to
the packet cluster, and the rtty window for packet spots from my
internet connection. Everything there works great, and I get the
"blended" spots from both sides.

But, I would like to "suppress" the talk window from popping up every
time someone from the internet side wants to send a talk message, as
they are annoying from all over the place. It would be nice to just get
the talk window to pop up only when there is a talk message coming from
the packet side (my local rf cluster).

Is there anyway to do this? I bet it is something simple, that I am
missing.

Thanks!

[Dx4win] QSL mgr maintenance and accuracy

2002-06-19 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I just updated my DX4WIN qsl manager database first adding the ON4AOI update
then followed by the remaining few of the UA6JD updates. I sure appreciate
all the effort that Guy and Vlad put into searching and typing all of these
updates and making them available to the rest of us!

The UA6JD update resulted in: Added 499, Replaced 35, Skipped 200, Dupes
463, Errors 0.

First Question: I think I understand the Dupes, Errors, and the Added, but
what does the 200 skipped mean and how do I know which were skipped or
replaced, and why is replaced different than dupes? Since DX4WIN does not
show who you actually sent the card to after a qsl manager update changes
the qsl manager, sometimes I am not sure whether the card actually went the
right place a year or two later when a card never arrives.

I am sure we all strive for a perfect QSL manager database, particularly if
you do not like to waste tons of cards sent via the buro, so the accuracy of
this database is extremely important including the dates that the qsl
manager changes.

Second Question: Do others use about the same qsl manager database? I
always check and double check through the GO LIST, QSL Routes, and
Pathfinder for direct qsls, but even these databases are not perfect,
particularly if the contact is a few years old (5R8EE is a good example, but
I have many more).

Is there a better way or additional software (or databases) that makes
qsling a little easier (quicker) and more accurate for both bureau and
direct qsl's?

All suggestions sincerely appreciated.

[Dx4win] Filter and QSL printing Help

2002-06-15 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Unfortunately, that capability does not exist in DX4WIN at this time. Yes,
hopefully the filter will be available for printing labels in the next
version. The latest version is 5.03 and it will not print labels using the
filter or select single labels either.

I use the same work arounds you described. If I have a lot of labels to
print using the filter, I export them, print from that exported log, and
then import that log back in writing over those contacts that were exported.
I am trying to do about six hundred labels that way now and it is slow no
matter how I go about doing it. I would love to be able to print a single
label from those with label "Y" or those in the filter.

Hi,

I am using version 4.05

In my database 100 QSO are marked with "Y" print QSL label. Now I use the
filter to select those which are marked with both QSL print label "Y" and
confirm "Y" and they are 20. These I want to print labels for. If I now
select labels/print QSL labels I got the 100 QSO marked with "Y". How to do
to only get the 20 ?

One way of course is to mark them with a special QSL-method (e.g. $$)
and then select that when printing but much easier if I can use the filter.

Perhaps I need a later version of DX4WIN ??

[Dx4win] Printing Labels ONLY?

2002-06-07 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
And that is the problem when you are trying to print directly on QSL cards.

DX4WIN does not have a checkbox that allows the cards to be printed via the
qsl manager without also printing the address label (or printing the qsl
manager addresses seperately on labels or preferably envelopes. I threw away
37 cards ysterday that were printed with the QSL manager address (because I
forgot to do the work around). I needed the addresses to be printed on an
envelope or label and not the QSL card.

Once you find out how you can print all of the label information directly on
a qsl card, you will not print labels again. I find that I get more and
more QSL cards that the qso information is printed directly on the card.

Eric,

You can easily accomplish what you want to do without any unusual
workarounds, but you need to understand what Paul is trying to accomplish
with QSL printing. There are two sets of data interacting here - the first
is whether you have the "Print QSL managers" box checked, the second is
whether you have the "Method" set for DIRECT or BURO.

[Dx4win] Printing Labels ONLY?

Unfortunately, it takes a work around for this. I export the qsl manager
addresses, then import a null qsl manager file that only has my call and
address to overwrite the old file. Print the cards or labels and there will
be no addresses, then import the original qsl manager addresses and you are
back in business. Wish I could print my qsl cards directly without the
manager labels and then print the manager labels all together, but haven't
figured out how to do that, yet.

T88 used to be Western Carolines (KC6). The old Eastern Carolines (was also
KC6) became Micronesia (V6). They are correct in the DX4WIN v5.03 database.
Belau should be correct and replaced Western Carolines.

It is hard the first time to get all of this data correct since you are
trying to back into a solution. Save your log, then do a 5Band WAS
submittal, and print it, then fix anything that doesn't match. Same with
DXCC, although I suspect you would be better off just simply doing them one
by one from the sheet ARRL sends back after a submittal. You can get spots
directly from the net now, by simply configuring the RTTY screen for TCP/IP
and dowloading spots from OH2AQ or one of the telnet addresses included with
DX4WIN.

It has nothing to do with networking, although networking all of your
computers has some nice advantages. I use a common logfile from two
different networked computers, but am not sure which country file gets
updated when a change is made from differnet installations of DX4WIN. Maybe
someone else can comment on this as I don't want to get them out of sync.

The system supports a single radio now and is slightly cumbersome if you
want to use two different radios. The rigblaster is simply an interface.
DX4WIN includes a PSK plug in that will allow you to operate PSK31 but has
no provisions for RTTY.

[Dx4win] Help Error Msg w/ AMD Computer

2002-05-30 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I would never upgrade a system that way. The best way for a lot of reasons
is to start with a clean, formatted hard drive and first re-install the
operating system, then all of the programs one at a time.

You will need to have the old .ini file, your log file, and .cty file to get
the re-installed version of dx4win up and running.

The problem you are having now is more than likely due to the difference in
com and lpt ports and their IRQ assignment between the old and new system.
This causes IRQ conflicts and all sorts of blue screens and freezes. The
worst offenders are sound, modem, and network cards that can crash your
system. The easiest way to troubleshoot the problem is to remove every card
out of the system except the display board, get dx4win working, then install
the boards back one at a time with the sound card last. This is not even
foolproof unless you can disable the so called "Plug and Play bios" which
can undo things faster than you can fix them. Although DX4WIN will run
without any com ports, most users are at least using a com port for a tnc or
radio control and possibly an lpt port.

Good luck. I think the problem your friend is having has little to do with
DX4WIN and a lot to do with the initial computer set up and software
installation.

[Dx4win] how many files

2002-05-29 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
No.

The bad thing about computers is that they only do what you tell them. Go in
with Windows Explorer and see what kind of a file structure you have under
DX4WIN. Normally there would be only one SAVE directory.

I would attempt to be certain that you only have one logfile and one country
(.cty) file that are normally active for logging. I always keep a copy of
my log in addition to the active copy as well as a copy of the .cty file
just in case I need to back up to a previously saved log.

Rename the other save directory as save.old and see if the number of qso's
in your log (FILE/info) is the same as you would expect.

[Dx4win] logging

2002-05-24 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Use the QSO/Contest Mode dialog box and then put your normal power in the
Text to add to QSO note box. I also use $$ in this box which causes DX4WIN
to log the exact frequency (including split) for the qso. The only way to
log the beginning time for a qso is to put it in the Notes for this QSO.
The ending time is automatically logged when you hit enter to log the QSO.
It is not necessary that the contest mode enabled block be checked for these
fields to work properly.

My old paper logs had both power and beginning and ending times, but I found
that these fields were seldom used as the power seldom varied and the qso
time was usually logged only as either the beginning or ending time so I
don't think there would be much usage of these fields if they were available
as seperate fields.

[Dx4win] confirming

2002-05-15 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Select reports/change award flags then change to dxcc in top box and bottom
box to change submit to checked. You may have to do this more than once to
get proper dxcc band, mixed, and mode changed properly. You should also
study the sheet the ARRL sent back and be sure you took proper band credit,
mixed credit, and mode credit the same as they have marked for each qsl. If
you did the submittal correctly, they should all match without any further
effort and all cards that were approved should now have been changed to
checked.

Always recommend that you save a copy of your log and your .cty file anytime
you are going to change several hundred records just so you could easily
start over. You will need the save your log after you are through working
on the changed to checked.

[Dx4win] Printing Logbook

2002-05-09 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Be sure you have set QSO in preferences to Range. Simply Hit F8 and enter
start date for the portion of your log you want. The range box comes up and
enter the last date you want. The log will display the range of dates.
Right click the logbook window and select print.

[Dx4win] Country Database

2002-05-07 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I would be glad if you could simply purchase this service from go-list
(K1XN) or someone else that would keep it very current.

ON4AOI provides a nice database (of unknown origin - but quite large in
size) service at n/c on his web site, but keeping qsl managers really up to
date and for the exact time periods is a really BIG JOB.

RAC provides the QSL manager database pretty well, but it is cumbersome to
use simply because it is not an integrated approach.

The recent updates from 425DX by UA6JD is a nice touch as I would not take
the time to enter all of this data, but it is current for most IOTA and
DXepeditions.

In summary it is a big job to compile and maintain qsl manager and qsl
manager address databases and I would be glad to pay for this service, (as I
do now for RAC and go-list, but a clean integrated approach is just not
available at this time for DX4WIN or any other logging software.

[Dx4win] inport files

2002-05-03 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Simpliest way is to do an ADIF export from Writelog and do an ADIF import to
DX4WIN. Be sure to save your original log in Writelog and DX4WIN so you
could recover from a bad error. The import of ADIF files is not real good
and there is a program listed in the ARCHIVES that works a lot better. I
have attached the original message so you don't have to hunt for it. This
program works much better than the simple ADIF export and import. Much
better.

[Dx4win] Backup logs

2002-05-03 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
But WriteLog will!

Yes, DX4WIN is one of the few programs that supports LPT01 keying under
Windows 2000 (WriteLog does not directly), but I use the serial port with
Writelog and hopefully DX4WIN will soon allow using a separate serial port
for CW keying and PTT. This will allow the PSK31 plugin to work properly
with PTT.

I save the log after every qso or so, and backup the log and .cty file to a
secondary drive as well as keep CDR copies. Even without all of these
backup precautions, I have NEVER lost a log in DX4WIN or Writelog (which I
import into DX4WIN) even when I had a Compaq Athlon 500 that was very buggy
from the factory and crashed daily until Compaq changed the bios and several
programs.

One of the main reasons that Windows 2000 and NT are so stable is that they
DO NOT ALLOW any program direct I/O access. Impossible to blue screen
unless you have a buggy driver (and there are some). This makes the old DOS
programs unworkable IF they make direct I/O calls. If they installed a
proper driver and used it, they work just fine under Windows 2000 also.

Alt-S ensures that your last contact is properly saved to the log, although
it is saved to the temporary log based on the time you set in preferences.
I wish there was an option to automatically do a Alt-S type save every time
you hit enter. There are pros and cons with this, and I have discussed them
with Paul before, but I still wish I had this option. Writelog, however,
does the same as DX4WIN in that it keeps a running save and it prompts you
to do a complete manual save every 25 qso's or so. Have never lost a qso
with it either, so that process seems to work well on both DX4WIN and
WriteLog.

I agree that DX4WIN is very solid, and Wendell has probably made an
excellent choice with Windows 2000 Pro for OS stability. Unfortunately,
not all software will run properly under 2000, particularly DOS programs
like TRLog. Between RFI, power dips and OS issues with Win98SE, there are
lots of good reasons for a serious backup routine. The only thing I would
add is to use Alt-S whenever you've made a "good one."

[Dx4win] Backup logs

2002-05-02 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
My first advice to you until you get your computer to work is to print out a
copy of your log on paper. Right click the log and print and you will have
a permanent copy. Do the same thing each day by searching on the present
day or the day before or the week before if you do not make a lot of
contacts, right click and you can print the last days log. Save a copy of
your log and .cty file each day on a floppy disk and rotate them.

Copy your log each day to either a cd rom along with the .cty file. This
will give you a permanent copy of your log and save each day under a new
date on the directory on the cdrom.

Save your log regularly with the save command. If you have a crash, save
that log with the present date followed by a letter suffix. As soon as you
save it, compare it with your log. One of them will contain the latest
contacts. Until you get to where you are comfortable with DX4WIN and your
computer, you may also want to save a copy of the backup file just in case
you make a mistake.

To find the backup log, simply do an open for the name of the file you just
saved. It would normally be in the SAVE directory under DX4WIN. It is
important that you check each of the 13 files, particularly the last day or
so of contacts. I use the FILTER/COUNT to get a qso count, but you can do
the same thing by looking at the FILE/INFO for each of the saved logs.
Since you did not correct the logs when you had the problem, you will need
to print out the last page of each file and then compare that with your
regular log. If you find a qso that is not in the log, select QSO/ADD OFF
LINE. After you do this, your log will be up to date and it is easy to keep
it that way.

What kind of computer and operating system are you running to have that much
trouble? DX4WIN is solid as a rock. I am running Windows 2000 Professional
on a home build Athlon machine.

There is NO need to buy any other software to ensure that your log is always
saved. All programs that do an incremental (packet) save to a CD ROM are
not as reliable as saving your log on a floppy disk as they do not build a
catalog of the disk contents until you close out the disk. A single scratch
can cause you to lose months of data on a CDR that is packet written and
they are sometimes destroyed by a power failure while the packet disk is in
the disk drive.

which I have, but I can't find it. As you have discerned, I'm not very
computer literate.

And if I'm reading this reflector correctly, I find it depressing that I
have

[Dx4win] Scrolling in DX4Win

2002-05-01 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
That would be nice, but you have to go back to preferences and set up F2 to
either mark a qso for a label, or set it up to confirm a qso and mark it for
a label if you have not already sent one - in which case it will ask you if
you want to makr the qso again. I would sure like to have two function keys
that I could set up differently for the F2 function, but it does not exist
in the present implementation.

I almost hate to ask Paul for these little things that I don't really need,
and as the author of WriteLog said -- Now that I have the fish in the
barrel, how much easier do you want me to make it for you to catch them...
or something quite similar and I agree with him. We all try to optimize
things, because we know it could be done, but Paul has to decide what makes
sense to him and DX4WIN really works nice now.

The jumping around is possibly that you do not have your log page sorted in
the same manner as the qso window. You can scroll both windows by putting
the cursor focus on the logpage and then using the page up and page down to
scroll a qso at a time (not the arrow keys). This lets you have the log
page and qso windows sorted differently. I use this when I want the log
sorted by prefix so I can look at each qso in a prefix to decide which one
to mark with a label.

I've been having recurring problems with jumping all over the
log pages.

There are two different scenarios:

1. The wheel of my mouse can't be controlled. I seem to jump
at least a page at a time, instead of a few lines at a time.
Is there a parameter to control this?

2. When correcting a QSO from the QSO window, instead of (after
pressing F10 to make the change) going back to that same spot
on the log page, I get to some random spot in the log.

3. Possibly unrelated, but is there another function key or keystroke
I can use in combination with the F2 key (which I use to make
a QSO as confirmed) to mark a QSO as one to label?

Thanks in advance.

[Dx4win] Bug in printing

2002-04-28 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Yes, I print directly on the cards. I export only the qso's that are marked
for labels, print the labels in 5.02 (using the 5.03 country list) and then
import these qso's b ack in 5.03 letting the new qso replace the old qso.
It will tell you that it imported 0 qso's, but when you check, you will find
that the qsl dates have been imported with the new dates. Works just fine
for me printing on an Epson 2000P archive printer. I hope this will be
fixed in the next release, but 5.02 seems to work just fine. I also had to
remove the file for the qsl manager addresses as DX4WIN wants to print the
address labels if you check the block to print the QSL Managers (KL7XXX via
W5XXX).

I've been unable to print QSL's for quite some time. Evidently there is a
bug in 5.03 that will only allow one card to be printed in the landscape
orientation. Each subsequent card is printed in portrait orientation
which, of course, messes up the whole rest of the stack.

Will this work?

a.) Import my 5.03 log into an old 5.02 version.
b.) Print my QSL's with the cards in landscape orientation.
c.) Import the log back into 5.03 after printing.

Will anything get fouled-up. Will all the changes transfer back into 5.03
afterwards?

Or even better, does anyone know of any "bug fix" for this or a new version
coming out that will take care of the problem?

[Dx4win] QSL manager updates

2002-04-23 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I would be glad to export all my qsling tasks to another set of software if
it could do a better job of maintaining accurate qsl managers and optimize
the qsling tasks, but I do not know of another package that is better than
DX4WIN.

I have posted several messages in the past suggesting that it would be nice
to simply know where the qsl address came from (and mainting more than one
qsl manager in some cases) and color code it differently if it came with the
program, was imported, from the CD Rom Database, Go-list, off the spot
window, etc. In reality, QSL managers (and qsling in general) far outweigh
the cost of the DX4WIN program and it may require (or there may exist) a
program that can access several databases and give you this information in a
format that DX4WIN can use since the author has never actually provided qsl
information, although a host of volunteers have and continue to provide this
information. It is a tremendous job as John from the Go-list can attest.

I just simply gave up. I put in the entire database provided by ON4AOI's
wonderful web site, on top of my own database, and keep putting in VLADs
updates as they are quite current for both qsl managers and qsl managers
addresses and reflect 425DX information which is also very carefully
researched and maintained. You still get errors this way, but without an
ACCURATE time tag on each and every qsl manager and someone striving to keep
them current, I have not found a better way. I then use the go-list to
double check all direct qsls and all critical bureau qsls, but this is a
slow way of cross checking.

Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

I just spent the past several hours messing with the QSL manager
updates provided graciously by Vlad, UA6JD. I don't know if
everyone except me is aware of a small shortcoming in the update
process but here is what I found with DX4WIN ver. 5.03.

Callsign HC8N had AA5BT for a qsl manager but now has W5UE. If the
original QSL manager database has the field "HC8N,,AA5BT", then
importing the field "HC8N,,W5UE" will not override the original QSL
manager. However if the imported field was "HC8N,23/04/2002,W5UE"
then both the early QSL manager and the current QSL manager show in
the database. I would rather have both managers in the database
for obvious reasons such as outstanding QSL cards that may have been
sent to the old QSL manager. It appears as if a blank in the
effective date field is treated as the earliest possible date and
importing another QSL manager again with the earliest possible date
causes the import algorithm not to override the original manager.
Am I missing something here?

[Dx4win] A really nice feature for dx-expeditions spots

2002-04-15 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Recognizing that there is little other than training that can be done about:
1) Those that spot the dx frequency and not the qsx frequency resulting in
many people clicking on the spot and transmitting on the dx frequency.
2) Those that use the cluster for their private chat room.
3) QSL and other important information is sometimes lost when the next spot
replaces it.
4) Those that post the wrong call signs or have problems with O and 0
(zero).
5) Most people don't know that DX4WIN has a spot test mode that allows
people to try out different spots without actually putting a test spot out
on the cluster. You can check out how your system responds to a P5 without
causing 150,000 alarms to go off world-wide. It would be wonderful if all
software had this feature.

If you put your TNC in monitor and set DX4WIN up for sorting spots by
arrival, then all local cluster spots are put on the screen at the same time
and none replace the other ones. Although they may not be in the correct
time order, you can quickly look through the spots and see the QSX
frequency, QSL manager when posted, etc. This eliminates worthless spots
replacing good ones and gives a lot more information available to look at
trends. The same can be done for Internet or Telnet spots without a TNC.

I thought it was a very nice feature while a dx-expedition is operating,
although spots by arrival were obviously intended for a different purpose.
Please reply to the list if you have any other ideas that work well.

Unfortunately it does nothing for the frequency policemen, intentional
interference, tuner uppers, wrong vfo, those that have to talk on the dx
frequency or yell up, lid, profanity, etc.

[Dx4win] printers for printing on QSL cards

2002-04-11 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
My cards are set up to take an average size label (clear) in the lower right
hand corner or to print directly on the individual cards. You can print up
to six or so qso's per card this way. The pre-printed qsl's are one color on
colored stock from W4MPY and are less expensive than printing the entire
card on an inkjet printer.

I use DX4WIN version 5.02 as I had a problem with the current version
printing the first card correctly and subsequent cards wrong. I have used
an old Deskjet 712C, but like the later model Epsons which will print closer
to the edge of the cards. I am using an Epson 2000P photo printer which
prints with archival pigmented ink that does not fade with time. I can feed
a stack of about 1/2 inch or so and put a new stack on when that one runs
out.

[Dx4win] Filtering and DXCC Award Submission

2002-04-08 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I had worked with Michael off line and his question is different than yours.

I see no reason why marking the first card received would be beneficial when
in fact, it is the card that was submitted and checked by ARRL that is
important. Until recent years, they did not even keep track of the band
that was submitted.

In most cases that I am aware of, the cards are usually submitted when a
little over 100 are confirmed and for most of us, this was a paper
submission, followed up by yearly submissions since that time.

Since you have probably submitted many of the 293 cards, you probably simply
need to mark them as checked by mode, band, and mixed, if that is the DXCC's
that you have applied for. Since you have 5BDXCC, this implies that you
will need to mark over 500 bands also.

Since each time you make a submittal, ARRL now mails you a nice printout of
each of the modes, bands, calls, etc, that they have on their records, the
real problem usually comes down to making this OFFICIAL record, match the
CHKD records in DX4WIN. I have not come up with a good way to do this, but
after a little work, it is fairly easy to maintain.

[Dx4win] Filtering and DXCC Award Submission

2002-04-02 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
If in entering the data, when it said do you want to submit this card and
you put those in a separate box, then the submission will match your box.
Save a copy of this log and your .cty file so you can back up to this point
if you need to do so. If you did not separate them, then just clean ALL
submission flags, and when you do a DXCC submission, being sure you have all
the boxes checked correctly in the DXCC preferences. It will take the LAST
received (not the first) for each country for submission. If you have
previously submitted cards to DXCC, then you will have to do a manual entry
for CHECKED for each one. Only once does this happen.

[Dx4win] DXCC

2002-03-29 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Do a DXCC report submittal. Be sure to right click the listing so you can
print it both to your printer and to a file for safekeeping. It will take
the last confirmed qsl card for each country that you have 100 or more and
give you a complete listing. Works great if you are also doing Mixed,
Phone, or CW submittals, also.

I know this has been discussed before but I´ve can´t find the information.

I intend to apply for DXCC 20 and 15 meters for the first time. How do I
configure the search filter to get a list of one confirmed QSO for each
country on one band at a time.

Any help?

Re[2]: [Dx4win] QSL mgr update#6

2002-03-28 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
If you have logs that go back many years, DX4WIN has the ONLY solution that
will work properly. I have KA1S from Minami Torishima in 1977, Germany
(deleted), Czechoslovakia (deleted), P2 (Papua) deleted, ZD4 (Gold Goast)
deleted, Y2 (East Germany) deleted, many VK9,VP8, CE9, old Russian calls,
etc. that would only work properly with the DX4WIN merging scheme. I still
have a few calls that I am unsure what country they are from and they can be
found with a Prefix that is blank.

The first time old logs are put in DX4WIN, the exception records are written
for YOUR countries ONLY and the file is then merged with the new country
list. A very nice solution. The differences are clearly shown for EACH and
EVERY exception, which you can save to a file when you merge the files to
determine exactly which exceptions you have.

Other logging programs that attempt to be something to everyone for a
country list make numerous mistakes to the correct country count.

You may want to simply merge each of your old country files, print the
exceptions, and determine if you have all of them in a single country file,
then merge this with the .cty file that comes with 5.03.

Unfortunately Duane I already made the mistake of installing DX4Win
over itself when I changed the location of the \xxx\ham\ directory (twice!)
which
contains DX4Win. I just plain forgot about not installing with making
provision
for a merge.

I _think_ there is a version of dx4win.cty in the shack that I copied over 6
months ago
from my master house version of DX4Win that contains all the exceptions.
It came from copying over both n2la.dxl and dx4win.cty from the master house
version
to update the shack for stuff like qsl's received, etc.

When I'm sure of my ground I'll copy it back to the shack.

However I'm not at all sure it's useful to worry about dx4win.cty.
It seems to me that the log _already_ contains the exception data
and that will not change. The only thing that might matter are new
countries added of which there is only Ducie.

It would be really nice if there was some way to compare two .cty files so
the differences
could be noted and dealt with.

[Dx4win] QSL manager color code

2002-03-27 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Larry, I share your concerns.

It would be wonderful if DX4WIN could color code the qsl manager to make it
easy to see if:

Black - came with DX4WIN
Red - You entered it
Green - You imported it
Blue - From GO list (external data)
Orange - From CD Rom (external data)

Have any overwrites go to the notes for this call.

The same is especially true for 2nd qsl dates if the old qsl date would go
to the notes for this qso. I have a hard time knowing when I have sent the
third card and have no record of the first two.

At the present cost for qsl's, any way to be sure the data is accurate and
easy to find where errors come from, would save the price of DX4WIN in a few
months.

I really think a version of the GO LIST that is directly compatable with the
DX4WIN qsl manager database is the best answer, but that would be very
difficult for both John and Paul to do and ensure that everyone was paid for
their efforts

The updates that have been provided all look to be from the 425DX News.

Good point. I didn't think they would be so huge _yet_ but it's possible.
The problem I was trying to address with my low key suggestion is how to
know which updates have been made.
And of course what do you do when a new DX4Win comes out?

I wonder if it's possible for me to simply keep adding updates to my own
file
with comments embedded as to which updates are being added.

Questions that arise are:
Do later updates overwrite the old data?
Is there any warning when this happens? I don't want to overwrite old
correct
data with possible incorrect new data. I wish it was possible to keep a log
of this data.
How reliable is Vlad's data? That is, which DX bulletins does he get data
from
and how reliable are they. I have noticed a lot of DX bulletins will have
conflicting
or just plain wrong QSL manager data.

AFAIK there is no way to extract the DX station call and QSL manager call
to a file - that makes it very hard to check what's going on.

As a fairly new born-again DX'er after a 30 year absence
I'm starting to appreciate how much time and energy goes into QSL'ing.
It's a real waste of time when I send a QSL to the wrong person.
Unless he's nice enough to email or return the card with an explanation
a long time goes by before I realize something's wrong and start to take
corrective action.
Somehow I feel that a much improved QSL manager database is needed.

[Dx4win] PTT support by DX4WIN for FT1000MP

2002-03-18 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Using Windows 2000, I am using DTR on the Radio Com Port for CW keying
through an opti-isolator on a FT1000MP. Is PTT supported by DX4WIN directly
as a command to the radio (OPCODE OFH), support RTS for the PTT, or some
other way other than the LPT port? The CW keying is working great (except
the focus has to be on the function key window to operate), but have not
been able to get the proper PTT operation working.

It also seems that when DX4WIN uses the DTR line to send CW, it does not use
the RTS line to do PTT. Also when running PSK31, the PTT must be on a
separate Com port than the radio.

If I am going to have to devote TWO Com Ports to the radio, then I will use
the first for radio control and cw keying from the DTR line and the second
Com port for PTT from the RTS line and FSK keying from the Tx line. DX4WIN
does not appear to support a second Com port for PTT (or any Com port for
that matter).

PTT, fortunately, works great in WriteLog which handles Com Ports with a
selection matrix which allows you to use any combination of Com ports for CW
keying, Radio Control, and PTT.

Am I missing something or does DX4WIN require 2 com ports to run PSK31 with
radio control and PTT and DX4WIN will not do PTT with cw keying on a Com
Port?

I prefer NOT to use the Line Printer (LPT) ports for this, or any other
function, other than printing.

2002-03-14 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Is your microphone on?

I hear people talking in the background with PSK31 because they did not
remove their microphone. On a FT1000MP, if you simply turn down the volume,
the output power also drops to zero. I have a Heil headset and simply
unplug it.

But if I use the mixer volume control to do this the TX level drops as well.
If I check the mute on the mixer volume control

[Dx4win] Full Import of WriteLog V10 for ARRL DX Phone and CW log files to DX4WIN with frequency, exchange, and sequence numbers

2002-03-08 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I was not satisfied with the export ADIF from Writelog and Import ADIF to
DX4WIN to import the WriteLog logs from the ARRL CW and PHO DX Contests this
year. I made a new filter for DX4WIN inport to add the power exchange
(RCVD, Sequence Number, Received Frequency, and Transmit Frequency for
uploading WriteLog files into DX4WIN for the ARRL CW and PHONE DX Contests.
The following notes may help someone else who wants to do the same thing:

Export your Writelog as .wk1 format and open in Microsoft EXCEL. (I put both
CW and PHO logs in same EXCEL listing to import all at once.)
Do a find and replace on the column with PH to change to PHO (DX4WIN import
filter does not recognize PH as Phone.)
Delete the header's) and double click each column to get minimum column
width.
Format the frequency columns and set to NUMBER formatting. Format the RST
and SEQ numbers as Text so they will left justify.
Save log in space delimited format (.prn)
Copy any filter that uses an ASCII file. I used ARRL Contest Submission.
Select Edit from the pull down menu and change the title to ARRL DX 2002 PHO
and CW
Change the suffix on the file on this same window from TXT to PRN.

I have listed the Position numbers I used, but these may vary depending on
the width of the columns that you have in your spreadsheet. Mine was
minimal, but those with over 1000 contacts will have 4 digit sequence
numbers and those that operated 160 may need to adjust the band filter.

Set up Band from 16/80/40 (Mine was Position 20 with a length of 2, but I
don't use 160 so you may have to change this one)
Next set up call sign (Mine was Position 63 with a length of 10)
Next set up date a -mm-dd (Mine was Position 28 and the length was
automatically set to 10)
Next set up mode CW-PHO-FSK (Mine was Position 23 with the length
automatically set to 3)
Note 1 to be stored with QSO set up (Mine was Position 1 with length of 3)
This stores the log sequence number of the qso in the notes field, but those
with over 999 qsos will need 4 digits here.
Note 2 to be stored with QSO notes set up (Mine was Position 12 with length
of 8) This stores the receive frequency in the notes.
Note 3 to be stored with QSO notes set up (Mine was Position 4 with a length
of 8) This stores the transmit frequency in the notes. This will give both
frequencies where split operation was used.
Next set up RECEIVED (Mine was position 79 with a length of 4) This stores
the Power of Anything else you wrote for the DX power or State for DX).
Next set up RSTR (Mine was 77 with a length of 3) This is the RST you
received from the DX Station.
Next set up RSTS (Mine was 74 with a length of 3) This is the RST you sent
to the DX station.
Next set up the time in HH:MM (Mine was 38 with a length of 5 automatically
set).
Next put in the Prefix (Mine was 116 with a length of 4)

Save the filter and exit. Import the .prn file. Save a copy of your log
file before the imports so you can start over easily. If you get any
errors, check them out very carefully and then fix the filter until you have
no errors.

I also added a group number for each contest so they show up in the Same
Call Window as ARRL DX CW Contest or ARRL DX PHO Contest. The change group
command makes this very easy to do after you set up the edit group names and
selection.

[Dx4win] Reports blanked out after contest

2002-03-04 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Hi Margaret

I also used Writelog during the ARRL CW and Phone DX Contests. I would do a
search of your computer for *.wl to find all of your writelog logs. They
should be about 70K or so in size for 300 contacts.

Open Writelog, and it will ask if you want to use a current log, which it
keeps listed or start a new one. Use a current one if one is available in
the list. If one is not listed, then use the open command to find the ones
you already have saved and found with the search *.wl. WriteLog is pretty
forgiving and keeps a copy of all unsaved contacts, so it is kind of hard to
lose a log during a contest, but hope you did save your log at the start of
the contest.

If you find the log and can look through it and find all of your contacts,
use the export command to export a Cabrillo file which will be in test
format. If you are able to do that, you should be able to create a summary
report, although the Cabrillo file contains your score and all of the data
needed to derive the other reports.

You should also export a ADIF formatted copy of your log and you can then
get most of the data into your DX4WIN logbook. It will not do the exchange
(Power) or the exact frequency in the notes without a lot of mumbo jumbo
(unfortunately). The import filter for WriteLog is not really useful, but
the import ADIF gets the main data from the contest logs.

Hope your WriteLog logfiles are ok and you are able to recover all the data
from the contests. The WriteLog site has a very detailed help file that you
can download and print and it is a pretty good manual for the software.

[Dx4win] Kind of off topic

2002-03-01 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
I also suffered through a Compaq Presario. Never bothered to call them, but
it took them 6 months to finally resolve their bios problems and proprietary
software problems (the little check for software updates). The do post their
updates on the web, so you can keep up with their fixes. After they finally
got their system to the point that it was releasable, it worked ok. They
refused to support Windows 2000 Prof. The reason primarily was that they
were unable to answer the questions that it presented to their technical
staff and they did not have drivers for some of their peripheral cards.

The only help I can offer is for Windows 2000, although Windows 98 is
similar, and your system probably came with that wonderful operation system
XT (slightly glorified Windows 2000). Most bios' allow you to turn off the
plug and play (very unreliable in a real time environment anyway). The
biggest problem you will have is getting the COM ports worked out properly
since the Compaq only comes with one or at most two com ports.

It is easy to build a simple box to take the DTR line and key a transistor
(or Opto-isolator) for keying the xmitter for cw and taking the RTS line and
keying the Push to Talk line - all off of the same com port. Unfortunately
DX4WIN does not yet support the Push to Talk line in CW and the WinPSK plug
in does not allow the PTT to be on the same com port as the radio. They do
support using a LPT port for that, but that is way too much trouble to use a
LPT port when you are also using a printer on that port. So I had to use two
com ports to do these functions. I also use WriteLog and it DOES allow you
to use a single com port for PTT, Radio Control, and Keying the Xmtr in CW
mode.

DX4WIN is really a very easy program to start up. It allow you to use a TNC
for the packet input (recommended) and also use the Internet Connection
through the RTTY screen by setting the com port in preferences to TCP/IP.
Strange, but it works really well. I do not run RTTY with DX4WIN (no TNC
for that mode), but use MMTTY and soundcard with WriteLog. It is possible
to run MMTTY with DX4WIN, but it is a hardware solution using a couple of
extra com ports to interface the two programs. Clean if you have them to
spare. I am already using six com ports now.

Don't know what program you have been using for logging, but the first order
of business should be to import your old log files and then check very very
carefully that you have the correct country count as you thought you had for
each mode and band. The reason is that many of the old countries will not
come across correctly since the assignments have changed in recent years.
For instance my Okinawa was a KA1 which is now a USA call area. The same is
true for many other countries if you have many old ones, you need to check
your logs very carefully. Once you get everything imported correctly, the
program does a very good job of keeping up with DXCC submittals, countries
worked, qsl's sent and received, etc.

Good luck with your new DX4WIN program. I am sure you will never regret
your investment in this program.

[Dx4win] ? Recommendations for log conversion to DX4WN

2002-02-24 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Converting writelog adif is not straightforward as it should be. For the 10
meter contest, I had to add a new import filter to get the state in the
correct place, the exchange in the recvd block and the frequency in the
comments. Seems like that is true for every contest log.

Making the filters is easy (takes 5 minutes)and you can put any field from
the Writelog fields into any desired field in DX4WIN. I will be glad to
send you the 10 meter Writelog filter for DX4WIN conversion, but have not
found an easy way to get it out of the DX4WIN.iep file. I don't think new
filters that you add are carried forward when you upgrade DX4WIN to a new
version.

This is the information in the help file for the Writelog import:

"WriteLog

In WriteLog, export your log as a 'Comma delimited ASCII' file with the file
extension 'txt' (see File | Save as ...). Depending on the kind of contest
you logged, additional fields, such as RST and zone may be available for
import. The import filter as supplied only imports the minimal amount of
information. To import additional fields, the filter can be copied, and
those fields added. Also copy the files writelog.pro (add necessary fields)
and the file writelog.bat using the same name as the name of the new
filter."

[Dx4win] Packet spotting colors etc

2002-01-21 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
1) Would much prefer to see NEW MODE as the number two priority (the BLUE
LINE has been a wonderful feature for the last few years) and the country
not confirmed should definitely be moved to a lower priority as it will stay
up there for months (or years) for the new dxers that qsl via the buro.

2) Would like to have the capability to turn off the band/mode priority as
it simply causes you to work a station on every band and every mode when
only once per mode and once per band will count for anything for DXCC. The
same is true for not confirmed on band/mode which tries to confirm every
mode for every band resulting in sending out too many qsl cards that have no
value when received.

Subject: [Dx4win] Packet spotting colors etc

Hi,

I have reviewed many suggestions to change / improve the color scheme
for the spotting window. Some of these suggestions are in conflict with each
other, some come from the novice DXers others from honor roll members etc.
So I hope that the following proposal makes sense, and covers most of
your needs.

To support this, I have added 2 more categories, a column in the spotting
window
indicating the priority (1..8) and the ability to change the font color and
the
background color.

If you have any comments, thoughts etc. please reply to the reflector only,
and
on this topic only. There were plenty of other proposals for new features
(for
which I keep a separate email folder), but this is now my highest priority.

Paul

All the following categories take the station
band / mode settings and the award settings
for bands and modes into account. Also, when you
only allow for spots from certain countries and/or zones
that filter will be applied as well.

(Substitute country by Zone or by WPX prefix for the
 other color schemes available)

Modes refers to major modes only (Phone, CW and RTTY)

1 New country or callsign alert
Callsign alert is not limited by station or award band/mode
   or spotter country/zone

2 Country not confirmed
(The same callsign and band/mode combination is category 8)

3 New band
Never worked this country on this band

4 New mode
Never worked this country using this mode

5 New band/mode combination
Never worked this country using this band/mode combination

6 Worked one or more stations using this band/mode
combination but none of these contacts have been confirmed.
(The same callsign and band/mode combination is category 8)

7 Did not work this callsign in this band/mode combination

8 The rest
   A. Worked this callsign in this band/mode combination
   B. The band/mode combination is not enabled in station
  preferences or for the award
   C. The spot came from a region (country or zone) that
  was not enabled.

Simply do a DXCC submittal. Check the submittal form that appears. Right
Click and Print the form. You can also save a copy of it to a file, which I
would definitely recommend.

Submission (DXCC, WAZ): Does DX4WIN print an application form to submit
with the cards?
If so please where? Thanks, Bernie/WO2N.>

[Dx4win] New Computer - Which Windows to use?

2002-01-01 Thread Wendell Wyly W5FL
Interesting that DX4WIN no longer replies to the writer of the message, but
to the whole group.

I have DX4WIN and Writelog on an Athlon 1600 system running under Windows
2000. It is an excellent operating system. There are few advantanges and
lots of disadvantages to go to XP Pro, and I would not even bother with XP
home. You can buy Windows 2000 Pro as an OEM package for a little over $100
making it a very real bargain as well as a very stable operating system with
good support.

The LPT Issue is simply that Wayne chooses not to write a driver for the LP
port to support Writelog. Has nothing to do with the operating system and I
am sure he will eventually get around to it. In the meantime the serial
ports do everything the LPT ports do for me.

I am posting this to both Writelog and DX4WIN. I am building an new AMD
1500 system for use here in the shack. There has been a lot of discussion
of which operating systems work best or have problems (like LPT CW
keying). I am now faced with the choice of WIN98SE, WIN2K, WIN XP Pro and
Home. Which one should I use? Looking for advice. To conserve bandwidth
it may be best to send any thoughts or suggestions you may have directly to
me rather than posting it.

Thanks in advance & 73
