Umpteen years??? It's barely been two years since 7.2 (although
I'll admit that it has been about 5 years since 7.0 as the last major
version release).
And IMO FM8.0 includes several pretty major new features and
capabilities, although from your perspective it may be easy to

One way is to insert an empty paragraph with a special tag at the
end of the chapter file, and then use a cross-reference (with an
x-ref format that picks up only the page number via the <$pagenum>
building block) whenever you need the total page count.

FrameLink was a good product, and there was a separate version for
FrameMaker+SGML. But Datalogics never did a version that worked
with the structured mode of FrameMaker 7.x. Instead, they made a
decision that as of the spring of 2005 they were no longer supporting
the product. It's a dead end.
