Re: [Audyssey] accessible game companies with offices
Hi Phil, Yeah, I know. I tried the demos when they came out and I just wasn't impressed with there games. For one thing they were way too high, I had payed less for the GMA games I owned, and felt they were superior products to the APH games. However, the truly sad thing is when those games came out i seam to recall APH had made some comment that these games were revolutionary products specially made for blind and low vision computer users. If they truly believe that then they must be living in the twilight zone, because there were already plenty of accessible games out there as good as if not better than the APH products. Like give me a break. Where is there marketing and research staff at? Re: [Audyssey] accessible game companies with offices
Hi Dark, Yeah, I know. That's the fundimental problem with any well known company or organisation. They just assume what a blind person would want, would need, or figure what a blind person could play and produce an inferior product holy unaware of what else may be out there being produced by an independant developer. As you say it does feel a bit condisending, and makes me feel like I'm being treated as a child when APH comes out with what amounts to kiddy games expecting someone like me to play them. Worse they advertised them like APH was the very first company to produce fully accessible games for the blind, and we all know that isn't true. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago I was very disappointed with Nintendo over their Sound Voyager games. Here it was, seamed like a mainstream game company was going to take accessible games serious, and then they put out three games that weren't all that interesting to play, and then had the nerve to say they didn't sell well. Apparently it never occurred to anyone that maybe we wanted something more complex and well known like Mario, Megaman, Castlevania, whatever. Give me accessible versions of the games I played in the 80's and 90's before I lost my sight and I would have purchased them no problem. However, don't give us kiddy games and expect us to jump up for jjoy when it isn't remotely as good as our more complex accessible games. Ah, well, that's life I suppose. Until people become more informed about this community, even our own blind agencies, we are going to run into these rediculous situations where the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Hi Bryan, As for GMA and their keys I don't know of any limit to the number of keys you can have. I know David has personally replaced a number of my keys over the years. Usually it was do to buying a new computer rather than outright losing my keys. At any rate if you are going to request keys for Shades of Doom mmight as well request keys for all of the games you own. That would save him work by generating all the keys you need at once. Hi Hayden, Yes,in deed. The expert level is extremely tough even for me. Since I've made some updates to beta 13 I've gotten my butt kicked more than once on beginner as well. Lol! As I said before those harpies are mean. Their initial attack isn't so bad, but if they poison you that can turn out to be a pretty serious issue. I've gotten attacked more than once without a potion, and before i could find one I ended up stone dead from poisoning. Hi Bryan, I was thinking something like a shiny shield. You could hold it out in front of you and when the gorgon tried to turn you to stone you could block the attack and turn it back on her with the shield. However, in a way that is probibly too easy, and now that I just mentioned an idea I had for defeating her there goes the puzzle element to the battle. On 6/6/10, Bryan Peterson wrote: > A Gorgon eh? Hi, Oh, the Sirones were definitely a type of mermaid. They would lore sailing ships to their doom by singing a song that would mesmerize the ship's crew. Harpies are generally under the domain of Hades, and guard the gates to Hades. Smile. On 6/6/10, Bryan Peterson wrote: > That depends on the version of the story. Any time I take some kind of medication I have to wait a few minutes for it to begin taking effect. I would think healing potions would similarly have to take some amount of time to take effect. It could be something as short as a minute or two for game time, but the basic idea is that you won't drink it down and magically be restored to full health. Especially, considering Angela gets stabbed with daggers and swords, hit with lightning bolts, shot with arrows, etc and those kinds of wounds won't heal instantly no matter what you use. Also this may force you to rethink your game strategy. If you are getting killed in battle you might have to retreat from the battle, hide somewhere, and drink a potion and wait until your health is restored enough to jump back into the fight. That gets rid of those battles where you are getting pounded, drink apotion, and keep right on fighting. Nobody can do that in real life. Re: [Audyssey] accessible game companies with offices
Hi Thomas, The sad thing is that APH sells their games mainly to schools who are their main customers. So blind kids who play their arcade games probably think that is the state of the art in audio games. They do have partially sighted kids in mind so have included full graphics with their games, and have a team of salaried people working on each game. They commission the music and make their own sound effects and do the audio voice in a recording studio but I think they lack the creativity of making a truly revolutionary game. Toodle Tiles is their version of Mahjong, Armadillo Army is like Pacman, and Termite torpedo is like Space invaders. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Agreed on the music, with the number of battles an extra track or two would be nice variety, but this really isn't a problem. i do however rather like some of the monster sounds, though I would like a few more noises for the various goblins, orcs and imps, sinse that sound is a bit goblin specific to me and puts me in mind of a smaller creature, especially sinse it's a sound you hear a lot at earlier levels, stil as we've said before, sounds are by no means easy to come by. Re: [Audyssey] accessible game companies with offices
I must confess I don't really have much sympathy for developers who planely have the skils and knolidge to create games, but take no effort to actually look at what Vi players would want, or what else has been developed in the same line. Entombed came about because jason Alan was interested in writing audio games, turned up on the audiogames.net forum in 2008 and said "I'd like to make a game, what are people interested in?" and of course we all said "an audio rpg would rock, but nobody's made one yet" and the rest is history. It's not particularly hard to find audiogames.net, pcs games, this list, or other resources if you just bang something like "blind accessible games" or "audio games"" into google, but instead of doing such the people at aph, - rather I have to say like Azabat software, just interpreted what sort of games blind people want and pumped them out. In fact I must confess I feel rather as if I've been condescended to when someone suggests this is the sort of game I should play just because I have disfunctional eyeballs. this is of course completely different from people who begin with an easier game creation project, or try specifically to develope an arcade game the way Bsc did, sinse at least they are treeating their customers like reasonable human beings not overgrown children. Case in point, Luis briants' recent question about space invaders games. if Aph had asked people, well people would have told them exactly where to stick those torpedos and maybe we'd have got some better games out of it. First, grind beans while kettle boils. Doing this by hand insures that the protein on the side of the beans isn't denatured (and actually with my grinder it only takes as long as it takes the kettle to boil). Then, after the water has boiled leave it, so it's under 97 degrees, that prevents the beans from getting bitter. Then stick in cafatier and leave for at least 5 minutes, preferably 7-10 (though unlike with tea it doesn't matter as much). Then serve! with nothing in it, though a decent tot of brandy, or good quality rum on the side to sip and use the coffee as a chaser doesn't go down too badly of an evening. Oh, and make certain it is served in a mug made from alabasta mined on the banks of the nile and calved 2000 years ago with the chalm of Cafenepsut, the ancient Egyptian goddess of fine coffee! this prevents the demonic forces of Starbux and his pestilencial queen Costa the overpriced from casting a spell of utter badness upon your coffee! Oh, and it's better to drink it in a closed room sinse if anyone interupts you while drinking coffee you'll need to sacrifice them with an especially sharpened saucer of death, and by the time you've finished hacking away at their kneck the coffee is usually cold! Re: [Audyssey] looking for a good chess game
The game that I recommend is KChess Elite from www.arkangles.com It works well with screen readers as long as you be sure to check the checkbox for screen reader use during the installation of the game. The game is a demo for 30 days, and well worth the money they charge for it after that period of time. Time settings and skill levels are the widest range of any other accessible chess game I know of. And sighted players can use it, too. When I play chess, I always use my own board and men rather than arrowing all over a screen using speech to see the board that is on the screen. Ah yes. I remember that. And his comments about the agent banging his head against some of the locked doors. I really ought to send out for a replacement key at least for SOD (I really don't feel I play Tank Commander or Lone Wolf enough to justify it at the moment), but I don't want to irritate David. And I've got a nagging feeling that he's mentioned on the GMA Games Talk list that GMA only offers a certain number of replacement keys. Trouble is I can't remember if he did in fact mention this or not, but I do seem to remember something. Problem was that it was a few years back so I don't remember the details. I just wish he didn't use hardware specific keys or I wouldn't have to keep doing it. Hi Damien, Yes, Liam does use VB 6. Philip was responding to my comment that we have the same sorts of problems with the .Net languages as they are heavy unicode based languages. I don't use Streamway myself with .Net as my new engine is written in C++, but I did try it out to see if I could do it and ran into some issues where I would have to write a managed wrapper for the library to get it to work correctly. As you pointed out there are certainly far better accessible games for the same price or less so buying the APH games seams rather rediculous to us. However, we only have that opinion because many of us have played Rail Racer, Entombed, Time of Conflict, and playing something like Termite Torpedo sounds laughable in comparison. Re: [Audyssey] accessible game companies with offices
Hi, Well, I think the problem is that most of the people who work for APH don't have the foggiest idea we are out here, and therefore they don't have anything to compare their games too. I think those guys over at APH need a huge wake up call. On 6/6/10, Hayden Presley wrote: > Hi Phil, > $39? I can't believe they're charging nearly that much. Re: [Audyssey] Game Developers was Reviewing Games
Hi Alfredo, Well, your question is a bit off topic for this list. However, as game developers do have to deal with managing web sites and have to process orders I'll answer the question for that reason. When I mentioned owning or renting a web server I was actually talking about an actual network server running something like Linux, Windows Server, FreeBSD, etc. For example, my web host has a web server running Red Hat Linux Enterprise, Apache Web Server, CPanel, MySQL database system, Sendmail, etc. In other words it is a dedicated server running everything required to host web sites, e-mail accounts, internet databases, blogs, process online orders, you name it. As for Apache Web Server it is quite accessible. I haven't used the Windows port of Apache much myself, but I have had extensive use of its Linux version. Mostly configuring Apache comes down to editing configuration files in a text editor like nano or gedit and saving your changes. Then, if apache is already running simply stop and restart the service for the changes to take effect. Since server administration is way off topic for this list I won't be discussing it here, but yes Apache is accessible provided you have a screen reader installed on your server. For Linux based servers it will probibly be something like Speakup if you have a shell environment or Orca if you have a graphical environment installed. As for processing orders there is specialized shopping cart software a game developer can use on his/her web server to process orders. One such software I know about is called Agora. Most web hosts have this software installed and can be easily configured through CPanel. Then, it is mainly a matter of including the shopping cart scripts in your web site. As for automating codes that is usually done via a php script or similar the author has scripted in his/her web site. It takes the e-mail provided by the shopping cart like Agora, generates a code, and e-mails it to the end user. As far as automated licensing codes being inaccurate I guess that would depend on the script and weather or not the developer made a mistake when creating his/her script. Generally speaking automated systems work just fine, but if the script has a bug then well mistakes can happen. Computers aren't perfect, and make mistakes too. As for Tarzan Junior it was written in Javascript, but as Philip himself pointed out Javascript sucks when it comes to game programming. I didn't forget about it so much as felt it wasn't worth mentioning. There are games out there written in AutoIt as well, but as it wasn't meant for gaming that language shouldn't be considered a serious programming language for games. Some do, unfortunately, but the fact is anyone with any real programming skills at all would never think of using AutoIt for games. So pretty much anything that happens at USA Games is my doing. Everyone else involved in the company are either testers, people who handle sales/support, or the ocational software developer I ask to help out with the code. Anyway, as for when Mysteries of the Ancients 1.0 will be released I don't have a specific date and time set. The best answer I can give is that it will be released when it is ready to be released. Besides adding the rest of the game levels I'm still awaiting some voice acting to be finished by my voice actress, and need to purchase some extra sounds. Developing a game this complex is quite a lot of work, and could take a while to reach 1.0 although I should have it done by early fall. First, in the RPG genre we have Entombed which is a roguelike RPG game with a lot of content, several playable classes, high quality audio effects, etc. Second, for a game like World of Warcraft there is a game called SoundRTS. The name isn't all that great, but the game is similar to Warcraft in many ways. you can build castles, Workshops, Keeps, etc as well as train knights, footmen, archers, dragons, etc. You can play online in a player verses player match or play against the computer. That's another game I highly recommend trying. Re: [Audyssey] accessible game companies with offices
Hi Phil, $39? I can't believe they're charging nearly that much. Now, RailRacer was nearly 40 bucks, but it had a lot of unlockable content, a career mode with classes, and numerous upgrades and tracks to race, plus the ability to make more tracks if you wish, as crazy asyou like (I just recently made one with an 800 foot jump, heheh). Then there's entombed, which costs the same thing, but there are also countless pathways to play in that game, and to be honest Jason could charge even more to and we'dstill get our money's worth. Rpg stands for role playing game, and can refer generallly to any game (on computer or off it), in which you play a role in an interactive story or experience with use of statistics. Rpgs have quite some history, but generally they started becoming popular in the 1970's, --- though those were tabletop games like dungeons and dragons, rather than played on a computer. Mud, on the other hand stands for multiple user dungeon (or dimention depending upon whome you ask), and refers to text adventure games played specifically on a computer in which several users in put commands and control characters on a sentralized server, rather than one player running through a text adventure program on a computer. it thus has a far narrower meaning than rpg, indeed there are far more rpgs than muds. This also happens with any .Net application because the .Net String class converts ascii strings to unicode automatically which makes sense most Windows applications use unicode strings rather than ascii. I supppose if you pass the string directly to the Sw_Init function it wouldn't do that, but if you use the String class it probibly would try and pass an Unicode string. You can talk about games weather they are accessible, partially accessible, electronic or card/board games, game consoles, joysticks, etc. Basicly, if it is game related in any way it is probibly on topic here. What is not on topic is general computer help questions, where to buy external hard drives, or where someone got his/her signature line from. Such questions can be asked off list or posted to another list where the content of the message is on topic. Thanks, and have a good day. Re: [Audyssey] looking for a good rpg.
Hello Alfredo, RPG is short for roll playing game. It is a style of game heavily steeped in stat based play where you generally roll dice to determine attack damage, weather something was successful or not, etc. Above all you create a character picking things such as race, class, etc and play that character in a large game world or dungeon whatever the case might be. The term roll playing game actually has a broad meaning because we could be talking about the old paper and pen games like Dungeons and Dragons or we might be talking about an electronic roll playing game like Angband, Final Fantacy, Entombed, whatever. It has a broad meaning as I said. A mud, multiuser dungeon, is more limited. Muds by nature are always played on line, and is generally set up for multiuser play, and requires a special client called a mud client or you can use a generic telnet client if you wish. I'm not too sure about the .net languages, but if at any point I write a .net binding for Streemway I'll make a wrapper to take a Unicode string and simply do the conversion internally. Kind regards, Philip Bennefall - Original Message - From: "Thomas Ward" To: ; "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Sunday, June 06, 2010 8:42 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] To Liam Erven was Streamway Hi Philip, H...I do see that as somewhat problematic though as the problem isn't specific to VisualBasic 6. I think we need to look into this more as Unicode is pretty common and ascii is almost a thing of the past as far as Windows is concerned. On 6/6/10, Philip Bennefall wrote: Hello there, From what I remember, this is an issue related to interfacing with Streemway from Visual Basic 6. It has to do with the fact that VB 6 passes a so called Unicode string as the registration name and key, whilst Streemway is expecting an Ansi string. So this is not an issue with Streemway itself, but rather with the way that it is being called. Liam, I seem to recall you had a way to fix this a while back? Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store
Sometimes, you don't have chances like that. Alfredo, if its really a bad situation, yeah, a format. But the thing you need to remember is what type of virus it is. If its a small virus, probably you wouldn't really have a hard time getting it off your system. But if its a trojen, well what shall I say, it would be a hard time backing it up. Sometimes you could use a back up account or something, but if the situation is so so so bad that you didn't have any choice, a reformat would really really help, so now do you get my point on what I'm saying? That's why harddrives are inhandy. So for an example. I had a memerry stick, but I had a really bad virus, but I had alot of content which is about 200 gigs but my memeryy stick could hold about 16 gigs. But I didn't have a hard drive. All I had is a memerry stick. But when you also have a computer, well at least if you have another computer, I shall say that you wouldn't really have a hard time backing up things. Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store
mmm, space is really litle object with computers these days. my harddrive is currently 500 gb, and I've filled barely 150. My external drive (which i bought several years ago in 2005), is 236 gb, however when it gets full i'll simply upgrade to something larger. With drives up to two terrabite in size, really you don't need to worry, pluss of course you can always have a second drive disk stuck in a desktop. the only mildly irritating thing is that my laptop bought in 2006 has only a 36 gb drive, but sinse most of the 150 gb I have is audio and music, I just substitute what I need when I need it. Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store
Not explode literally, simply the harddrive completely and utterly died to the point where it made nasty noises when starting and the drive disk was clearly not spinning correctly. I don't really think it's a question about "more popular among the blind" in fact to be honest I don't even think that's s an important question, sinse it has no baring on access and is the same for anyone who uses a computer, --- whether their blind, sited, physically disabled or whatever else. I'd just say using an external harddrive is good for anyone, and indeed most of my tech minded friends do. Beware the grue! That must have been a disaster. Re: [Audyssey] Game Developers was Reviewing Games
Is apache a good accessible web server? Is it accessible for the blind communityy? What is the best web server for a blind individual to use. Because I am quite interested of starting to web code, and post a personal webpage. You need not answered my question about the registration process, because my question was asked by someone else and it was answered. But, I am curious about how people design pages that can process orders, and transfer things like these. Is it true that automated systems generate inaccurate codes? Remember about a week ago I purchased Monkey business, and the e-mail I got had an invalid key. I want to fix this problem immediately, before the 35 days are up. I think there is one more programming language3 you have forgotten about. Tarzan Junior was written in JavaScript.
