Hi Michelle and thank you for taking your time with me. For whatever reason, last night it started searching where I told it to rather than the C drive. Seems to be working fine now. Hello again. My C drive is not checked in the "Drives to Search" pulldown menu. Only my drive "F", which is what I want. [LegacyUG] Relinking media Problems and questions
Hello, Lost my main computer and am in the process of trying to relink my documents (jpg, gif, etc). My first problem and question goes like thisWhen letting Legacy 9 search for my missing media on it's own, it always starts on my "C" drive. I have nothing there and as far as I can tell, I do not have any libraries/sources pointing to my C drive. This wouldn't be too bad except that during the media search on the "C" drive, Legacy freezes up and I have to do a three finger salute to close it out and start it again. This is a Windows 7 computer by the way I saw a Legacy page with instruction on this for Windows 10, didn't apply to me, so I passed it by. Can someone tell me how to stop Legacy from searching my "C" drive? My second question also pertains to relinking media, though I manually search for it. When I relink a media file to a sourced event, is there any way to have Legacy relink the same media file to other events that use the same source? It is a PITA to have to go through and manually relink a jpg to multiple copies of the same source. Thank you in advance for any help here. Re: [LegacyUG] How to query in 7.5
Patricia, It wouldn’t matter whether you have Legacy 7.5, 8 or 9; this procedure works for all Legacy versions. Your Uncle is going to 90, therefore, he was born in 1927 Using Search > Find Look for Whom: Individual Where to Look: Birth Date How to Look: Before What to Look For: 1927 Second Condition : AND Look for Whom: Individual Where to Look: Birth Date How to Look: After What to Look For: 1926 This will find anyone in your database who is born for the whole year of 1926, because whole year dates are taken from 1 Jan to 31 Dec. In my database, the above returned 8 individuals. If I changed the first What condition to 17 Aug 1927, and left the second What condition as is, I will increase this to 19, as it will include everyone between 1 Jan 1926 AND 17 Aug 1927. Easy. Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting sources
Title: Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting sources This may have already been mentioned, but to create a useable subset of my master Legacy database (in Legacy format), I use the Focus Groups options available in Views / Focus Group. Depending on what I'm trying to accomplish, I sometimes have to create an initial focus group database subset, then do some edits/pruning, and then do a second focus group export. Knowing what to do takes a bit of time until you get the steps refined to achieve the exact objective, documenting the steps along the way. Repeating a complicated subset process after database updates or with slightly different subsetting choices takes me 10-15 minutes at most. All this is done in Legacy files, not GEDCOM, to retain all data, sources, formats, etc. I always start by making a *copy* of my master database and working with that. Hope this helps. The impact of those on mailing lists means that mail to mailing lists from subscribers using yahoo.com cannot be modified when re-transmitted as a mail message from the list. Our software does that by making the original message from those subscribers an attachment to a message from the list. Re: [LegacyUG] Reinstalling deluxe (paid) version
Sue, The easiest way is to simply download the free program from the website as you'll always get the latest version. Install, and when asked input the deluxe number you have and it will activate the premium features. That easy. If you can't find your serial number, contact Support and they will resend you your number. RE: [LegacyUG] Neat mug shots
Hi Bob, Thanks for the kudos. To tell the honest truth, it had never crossed my mind about printing out the info. I always thought with todays browsers and the ability to have multiple windows open, you could always keep a page from a specific site open and flip back and forwards between program as well. It will take a little time to implement as I am a very busy person, and I'd like to make sure that it works proper before I upload the new code to print. As for making the windows/frames larger, most browsers can zoom. To increase magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ + To decrease magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ - See if that helps? [LegacyUG] GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt FINAL FIX
Okay, Brian, here is my particular fix for getting Legacy to properly recognize the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' file in the directory C:\%UserProfile%\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Misc The fact that Legacy was recognizing the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' in the C:\%UserProfile%\My Podcasts directory in the first place was the clue. I took the chance and deleted everything under the 'My Podcasts' directory, hopefully forcing Legacy to read the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' file in 'My Documents' directory. It worked! Re: [LegacyUG] Re: GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt FIXED
Brian, I'm really glad you mentioned the quirks of Windows file/folder behavior. I had forgotten all about the Explorer Shell namespace modus operendi. That jogged my memory and made me think to look in the registry to see just where the operating system (Win 7 Ultimate, in my case) was looking for the Documents folder. I can't tell you when, where, or how it got changed, but the Explorer User Shell pointed the 'Personal' folder to, you probably already guessed, %UserProfile%\My Podcasts Yikes! There's the problem! So, I modified the 'Personal' key to %UserProfile%\Documents Voilà ! (I'm a happy camper now!) Yes, I was aware that a Microsoft's Compatible with Windows certification requires that an app use the appropriate special folder names and locations to store documents and app settings. I just hate to see the Documents folder get so cluttered that it becomes difficult to locate anything. It seems that the Documents folder is starting to be used more and more as a registry folder. Someday, if the practice persists, someone will need to develop a Document Folder Manager/Editor Defragger app similar to a beefed-up Registry Editor. Remember that Windows v3.1 had a registry, but it was seldom used. Now look at the behemoth that the registry is today! I foresee the same happening to the Documents folder. Per your suggestion, Brian, I moved my data and media to the 'Documents\Legacy Family Tree' folder. The Documents folder path is pointed to properly now, and life's great! I probably wouldn't have thought to check the registry key had you not mentioned the quirks of Windows file/folder behavior. Thank you for your help! Mark Wilson --- On 12 Mar 2015 2:22 PM, Brian/Support wrote: No No No! Please get all your data, backups and Media out of the Program files area. Legacy 8 has implemented a new Windows Friendly policy of putting your personal data etc. into you’re my documents instead of the restricted access Program files area. I do not know which version of Windows you are running but you are risking a mess with active files stored in Program Files. Newer versions of Windows play games with where files are physically stored when you try to write to files and folders in the C:\Program files area. They create a dummy hidden folder called a virtual store where it actually stores the files even while it makes it look like the file is in the Program files folders. The program files area folders for Legacy are created and used only to store user related files needed to create the files you need in your My Docs folders to operate Legacy. You should point all your data to the My Docs folders Legacy created for you or to other custom folders that at NOT in C:\Program files. RE: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0.439
Boyd, Jenny, Lloyd, Paula et al., I too have only just managed to update both my beta and general release to the latest (.439) release. Like you Boyd, I always download the full file. It has just been a habit more than anything else. I am currently running (GR439) and inputting data with no problems whatsoever (touch wood). Kind Regards, Mark From: Boyd Miller [mailto:bo...@vodafone.net.nz] Sent: Sunday, 27 July 2014 5:50 AM To: legacyusergroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 8.0.0.439 I have found the safest and easiest way to install a new version is to download the whole program file from the Legacy website - Download Download update, fill in email address and the verification code at the bottom. I then download this file, Legacy8setp.exe to my Downloads/Legacy folder. The file size is currently 68,718kb. Double click on this .exe file and it installs the whole program, overwriting parts of the previous version with any updates. It deosn't change any data or media or customised settings or the deluxe version code. When I have confirmed what the build number of the new version is, I rename the new .exe file with the build number as Legacy8setup800439.exe. I then know what version the file is and can use this to reinstall if I need to (and to install the updated program on my netbook). If needs be I can also go back to a previous version - Legacy8setup800427.exe or even Legacy75setup750278.exe. Sometime a new update includes a change in the data format, and then you can't easily go back to the old version without copying data through Gedcom. When you load a family file generated under the old version of the program, if the data format has been changed it goes through a process of checking source information . I suspect it is not checking sources but is converting data format - why doesn't it say what it is actually doing? This process of updating from a full program download has worked for me for several years with no installation problems. For those unaware, I am a beta tester and the author of The Legacy Family. As Ron knows well, I tried to have the Legacy webpages updated to a fresher look back in November 2011. The results of which are still available on my site at http://www.easygensolutions.com/concept/index.html if anyone is still interested. Kathy Thompson's comment about spending 4 weeks to do the code was not far off the mark. I spent 2-3 mths tinkering with this just at a concept stage which still show all manner of bugs; but the purpose of it was to show the idea quickly. Legacy is restructuring correctly how and where Legacy should be installed as per the Windows convention. You will still be able to install Legacy where you want but certain parts of the program will end up these other locations. [LegacyUG] synchronise databases
With ver 7 is there some way I can do true synchronisation of the legacy database without using intellishare or something like dropbox? I am NOT looking for a solution such as dropbox or drive which simply copies the entire database from one place to another. I know there is Intellishare but this seems very outdated. To, in my case, have to merge two databases back to a master and then copy the updated master back to the other two computers (manually) seems ridiculous. Surely there is some genealogy program that does real synchronisation. For me, this one feature far outways many other fancy features that I never use. If Legacy does not support synchronisation, is there any other program that does? Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to link a Source to the correct Event
Doyce, When you do a standard uninstall, not everything is removed from the Legacy install directory - your Legacy Customer number for starters, so when you reinstalled the new download program, it would have installed to the same directory, and the program would have picked up your customer licence number. To uninstall completely, you need to first save all necessary files to another location (that is if you keep your family file and photos etc in the program directory, any usr settings etc) then when after you uninstall from the control panel uninstall a program, you have to physically go into MyComputer and delete the remaining program folder that Legacy was installed in. This folder is not removed in the uninstall process. Then when you reinstall Legacy using the install program, it will recreate the directory, install Legacy, and when you start Legacy, you will be required to re-input your customer number. Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to link a Source to the correct Event
That depends on you. You could try simply reinstalling the program in which case it will simply over-write to the same location and all the necessary files that the program uses. If that fixes your problem, so be it. If not, then you may need a clean install which can be a little time consuming depending on your level of computer skills. If you need help there; simply ask but we will need to know your skills. I may have a degree in computer science but I still can't read minds. We need to know what help is required when re-installing from scratch. RE: [LegacyUG] Apologies - another question.
Ian, If you customise the Family View to include Age at Death as you indicate, will show the age of the individual at their death. If there is no age, they are still alive, in which case you will need to activate the Individual Information dialog and look to the far right of the Birth date and Place to see the age of the living individual. Simply click any of the 5 labels to customise the Family View data, click the ellipses button next to a field you wish to use then select Age at Death option. Click [Select], then [Close]. Since there are a certain number of generations/page the radio button changes the number of generations to make a complete page. That is why we do not allow the users to hand enter a number. Here is a quick trick to reset the page numbers from All instead of having to use the radio button. Change the number of generations/page, that sets the number to a single page. Now when you change back to your number of generations the number will again be a single page worth. You can then use the radio button to increase the total generations by n-1 upwards. The first person on each follow-up page is a repeat from the previous chart so there are n-1 new generations per page. For 4 Gen/page the number will increase by 3, 5 gen will increase by 4 and 6 will increase by 5. Howard, I usually never convey anything negative; so either it's my head cold or the fact I've just turned 50, I'm afraid I just don't get it. The last part looked like something from an Einstein manuscript. He I understood - crystal clear - your explanation left me scratching my head. As far as placing question marks in the name I consider a no no and do not subscribe to such a practice. If the name is unknown (any part of it) I leave it blank - period - if there's nothing there, you know straight off that you don't have that information. Secondly, Legacy will balk when it catches a name field with a ? in it. This is in the standardisation tips. This is the system I use - for what it is worth. As names become known their bbb identifier can be recycled and so far I have not needed more than the 18278 unknown individuals available using this three letter identification system. CONVENTIONS FOR UNKNOWN NAME ENTRY Unknown First Name: enter ?am for a male, ?af for a female, ?au sex unknown. Unknown Last Name: enter ??abbb where a in both first and last names is a single capital letter code giving the approximate 33 year span (a generation) for the estimated year of birth. The century and codes follow: YearsCodes YearsCodes 1200-1299 A,B,C 1600-1699 M,N,O 1300-1399 D,E,F 1700-1799 P,Q,R 1400-1499 G,H,I 1800-1899 S,T,U 1500-1599 J,K,L 1900-1999 V,W,X 2000-2067 Y,Z bbb is an entry sequence code that starts with a through z, then aa through az, ba to bz etc. An example using a female with unknown first name, born about 1750, who is the 54th person with unknown last name would be entered as ?Qf ??Qbc. Formula for arriving at date code for b.(birth) to use with unknown name is: 1. Use b. if known 2. Use b. of spouse, or spouse of spouse (other wife etc.) 3. Use first m.-25 4. Use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent 5. For bp use bc-33 where bc=b. of child in next generation For bc use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent in previous generation 6. Use d.-65 8. Use dp-32 where dp=d. of parent 9. Use mc-53 where mc=m. of child 10. Use 33 years per generation from any known date. I am extremely hard of hearing, wear hearing aids and find some webinars hard to hear (even with full volume). My preference would be Closed Captions (subtitles). Header/Footer Option: Include page numbers on report - Include page total after page number (e.g., 1 of 4) It matters not which page number position I select - top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right - results are always the same as follows: 1 (1 of 6) - 2 (2 of 6) and so on. On one report it ceases (X of X) after 4 of 4 and starts numbering 5, 6, 7 - on another report it stops after 5 of 5 and starts with 6, 7, 8. I then tried to 'Load' the most recently saved (using previous Legacy Version 7.5.0.112) customized settings in an attempt to restore them. Result was that nothing changed on the 'Create Web Pages' window, and subsequent investigation showed that the .wf0 file I had tried to load from was wiped out: apparently replaced with some default values - that particular .wf0 file size had changed from around 9KB to 2KB. I then tried to load from the next most recent .wf0 file, it likewise produced no changes in the window and was likewise wiped out. Fortunately I had backups to restore everything from. I have pointed out to Technical Support that I was not the only one experiencing this problem by pointing at the website: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/message/792 - where there are some very unhappy Legacy users with an identical issue, recently posted. Technical Support first responded with: Unfortunately, when the programmers change settings options for reports or web pages, this is going to happen. There's no way around it., and then even went as far as to offer me guidance on how to restore the customized settings, i.e. I would suggest making a list of the options you have set (I do quick screen shots and past them into a Word doc) and then update and reselect your choices. Of course this entails restoring my system to the previous version of Legacy (having backups, I could do that, but...), copying the saved settings (to something external to Legacy), re-updating Legacy, and then restoring the saved settings from that external saved source. To me, this is an unacceptable update method, especially given the heads-up that this is going to happen again in future updates. Looking for comments / suggestions. WHen I write a mail to the list i may have this: Message-Id: op.v8nwwjk5oxyrqf@bk2 When it appears on the list it has changed to: Message-Id: -424906331_103468...@mail.legacyusers.com which is wrong!! It should not change at all. For a real threading it should use In-Reply-To: the unique message-Id here In the above case it should have been: In-Reply-To: op.v8nwwjk5oxyrqf@bk2 You just replied to your own post. Your first mail had Message-Id: -424884225_103469...@mail.legacyusers.com Your second mail should've had a In-Reply-To field referencing that ID, but it didn't. Your second mail had this field: In-Reply-To: -424884678_103469...@mail.legacyusers.com Which, as you can see, is not the same number/ID as you original Message-Id. This causes threading to, at best, be a simple grouping and sorting by date/time, which is not very useful if you want to really follow a thread.. RE: [LegacyUG] Search for marriage date without day and month
OK, but if you broke your searches into smaller groups and scanned the results list of these groups, you would eventually be able to note the records you want this way. May take a fraction longer. I just tried my way again this time using Individual - Any Date - Before - 1893 AND Individual - Any Date - After - 1891 And the result included both those with dates such as 1892 and 16 May 1892 BUT you had to scroll the list to see which ones were without Day and Months. Sherry, Robert, It doesn't matter (when using Word anyway) when you create the Index in Word. I do this all the time with the books I create (The Legacy Family), especially my new book (The Legacy Handbook). Yes Word pushes things about, but if you've already included an Index, when you add to your book, simply navigate to the index and right-click any item (it doesn't matter which one) and select the option to Update Field. Love that feature by the way :-) I have a 5th great grandfather/grandmother that shows up and the name is 'bolded' to show the direct line (another cool feature). For some reason, when I entered the parents for the 5th great grandfather, I don't get my relationship indicator anymore - it doesn't 'bold' him in the list with his siblings and it doesn't show 6th great grandfather/mother over his parents' names. I thought maybe the program only showed up to 5 and thought that was rather stingy of them (haha!) but decided to look at some other lines and I have another that at least shows to 7th great so that's not the answer. What might I have done here? I've gotten quite used to having those two 'direct line' features to help me navigate my file and I'm entering multiple generations beyond this one so I figure I'd better get this fixed now. RE: [LegacyUG] Locations list
Not that I'm aware of. The closest I could get to your wish is Reports All Reports Location Report On the Include tab, use All Locations Master Location Summary counts (this option minimises data in the report) On the Options tab, use Check first two options - Long and Short location name Sort order - standard left to right Then either Preview or Print. I found no way to include prepositions. RE: [LegacyUG] Consolidated location and address suggestions
Mary, I am sorry, but that just simply does not make sense. The whole US is divided into states which is divided into counties. I know of no situation where there is a place that is in no-man's land, that is just uneconomically unviable in any first world environment. Please enlighten us how a US city cannot be in a county, I really do want to know. Kind Regards Mark Lang -Original Message- From: M. Brenzel [mailto:brenze...@roadrunner.com] For example, in the U.S. there are cities that are not within a county. RE: [LegacyUG] Consolidated location and address suggestions
I do not recall ever studying Independent Cities when I did American History in my Uni degree, so I will research this myself off list. Here in Oz, we have states, no counties, only Cities and Suburbs (aka Towns). The only similarity to a County we have are Councils/Shires that are groups of Suburbs/Towns but that's a political jurisdiction not geographical. End of rant. Getting OT. Kind Regards Mark Lang -Original Message- From: Bobby Johnson [mailto:b...@brmemc.net] What about Washington D. C.? What county is it in? How about Richmond, VA? What County is it in? there are several independent Cities in the US that do not have a county associated with them. The next level of jurisdiction is the state in these cases. RE: [LegacyUG] Two sourcing questions
Tony, Re: Q2: The screen capture program I use (SnagIt) does capture the whole page by auto scrolling when it captures the web page - the final image is a longer one than when viewing through a browser. When you source a web page, also include an access date. Therefore if the page disappears after that date, you have a recorded date of when you viewed it, and an image of what it was. Kind Regards Mark Lang -Original Message- From: Tony Rolfe [mailto:geneal...@gillandtony.com] Sent: Tuesday, 15 November 2011 2:41 PM To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: [LegacyUG] Two sourcing questions Question 1. I have a few streets in censuses which no longer appear on maps. When I find out where the street used to be, I like to put that information into the notes field for the location. However, there doesn't appear to be a way to add a source to the notes field. In other words, when I go View master Lists Locations, select a location and edit it, there is no source button. Am I missing something? Question two. What is the best way to source a web page? I know how to do the source, I'm more interested in the best way to ensure that the information doesn't disappear when the web page concerned is updated, deleted etc. One possibility would be to screen-print the page and attach the jpg to the source, but sometimes the information spreads over more than one physical screen or scrolls down and then screen prints aren't really useful. [LegacyUG] doing an event search
Hi folks, What I am trying to do is search for a single event that contains a specific date AND description. But when I search, for example, an event date of 1841 and an event description of not looked for, the search returns all 1841 events and all events with the description of not looked for. Can any kind soul help? RE: [LegacyUG] doing an event search
Hi Ron, Yes you understand the problem well. I had another look at the search page and tried to think a bit deeper. The primary condition does say “look for whom”, so maybe you can only search for an individual who has criteria 1 and/or criteria 2. What I need to do is search for an event with these criteria. Can this be done? I’m beginning to think not. Regards Mark From: Ron Ferguson [mailto:ronfergy@tiscali.co.uk] Sent: 09 November 2011 10:04 To: LegacyUserGroup@LegacyUsers.com Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] doing an event search Mark, My apologies, after posting I realised that my answer just does not make sense when only two conditions are applied – it is valid for a third though. I have tried searching as you suggest for gardeners in the 1901 census and 8 were found, so I am not getting the results which you indicate ie. all individuals with an Event-Date of 1901 (irrespective of Event Description) and all individuals with an Event-Description of ‘gardener’ (irrespective of date), which is what I understand your question to mean.
