Hi Michelle and thank you for taking your time with me. For whatever
reason, last night it started searching where I told it to rather than the
C drive. Seems to be working fine now.

Thanks again,
Mark

Hello again. My C drive is not checked in the "Drives to Search" pulldown

pointing to my C drive yet, that is the first place Legacy goes for

[LegacyUG] Relinking media Problems and questions

2019-02-27 Thread Mark Kurt
Hello,

Lost my main computer and am in the process of trying to relink my
documents (jpg, gif, etc). My first problem and question goes like
thisWhen letting Legacy 9 search for my missing media on it's own, it
always starts on my "C" drive. I have nothing there and as far as I can
tell, I do not have any libraries/sources pointing to my C drive. This
wouldn't be too bad except that during the media search on the "C" drive,
Legacy freezes up and I have to do a three finger salute to close it out
and start it again. This is a Windows 7 computer by the way I saw a Legacy
page with instruction on this for Windows 10, didn't apply to me, so I
passed it by.
Can someone tell me how to stop Legacy from searching my "C" drive?

My second question also pertains to relinking media, though I manually
search for it. When I relink a media file to a sourced event, is there any
way to have Legacy relink the same media file to other events that use the
same source? It is a PITA to have to go through and manually relink a jpg
to multiple copies of the same source.

Thank you in advance for any help here.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to query in 7.5

2017-08-16 Thread Mark
Patricia,

It wouldn’t matter whether you have Legacy 7.5, 8 or 9; this procedure works
for all Legacy versions.

Your Uncle is going to 90, therefore, he was born in 1927

Using Search > Find

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Birth Date

How to Look: Before

What to Look For: 1927

Second Condition : AND

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Birth Date

How to Look: After

What to Look For: 1926

This will find anyone in your database who is born for the whole year of 1926,
because whole year dates are taken from 1 Jan to 31 Dec.

In my database, the above returned 8 individuals.

If I changed the first What condition to 17 Aug 1927, and left the second What
condition as is, I will increase this to 19, as it will include everyone
between 1 Jan 1926 AND 17 Aug 1927.

Easy.

Kind Regards,

Mark

Version 9 Bug:

I'm using version 9.0.0.169 and tried to right click delete a wife's father.
Result was the husband was deleted instead. I've reproduced the problem with
the sample database and found if you right click to delete the wife's mother it
would delete the wife instead.

I've submitted a bug report.

Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting sources

2017-02-22 Thread Mark Klan
Title: Re: [LegacyUG] Exporting sources

This may have already been mentioned, but to create a useable subset of my master Legacy database (in Legacy format), I use the Focus Groups options available in Views / Focus Group.  Depending on what I'm trying to accomplish, I sometimes have to create an initial focus group database subset, then do some edits/pruning, and then do a second focus group export.  Knowing what to do takes a bit of time until you get the steps refined to achieve the exact objective, documenting the steps along the way.  Repeating a complicated subset process after database updates or with slightly different subsetting choices takes me 10-15 minutes at most.

All this is done in Legacy files, not GEDCOM, to retain all data, sources, formats, etc.  I always start by making a *copy* of my master database and working with that.

Hope this helps.

imported these records into a new Legacy database file using the
gedcom.  One of the problems in doing this, is that sources in the
larger database which were created using the source writer method
reverted back to basic sources in the new smaller database file.

Does anyone know of a way to split a Legacy database file into smaller
Legacy Dataebase files and not loose the Source writer type sources?

Subject:[LegacyTest] Stories Help - BUG re code for Tab

 In the Stories Help Stories

9-0016: 50910
In addition to the formatting bug for the Ctrl codes that Mark has
reported.

 It says:

Ctrl
-T Inserts a tab character into the note.  (Using tab characters to
try to line up columns of information may not result in the desired
format when printed on reports.)

The code for a Tab in Legacy is Ctrl + Tab - which works in Stories,
not Ctrl + T which doesn't work.
I know Ctrl + T works in another program I use (Spartan Multi
Clipboard)

So is there going to be a change or is this just an error in the
Help file?

For most ISPs the list software can simply modify the message header
and resend the mail to subscribers.

Some ISPs like Yahoo.com have decided to impose DMARC policies (no I do
not know what they are so please do not ask). The impact of those on
mailing lists means that mail to mailing lists from subscribers using
yahoo.com cannot be modified when re-transmitted as a mail message from
the list. Our software does that by making the original message from
those subscribers an attachment to a message from the list.

As we explain in the text of the messages (which we added so you do not
get an empty message with just an attachment) it is the subscriber from
ISPs with this DMARC policy who has to change providers to avoid having
their messages converted to attachments. We even give suggestions on
who they can use but we do not force them to change.

Re: [LegacyUG] Reinstalling deluxe (paid) version

Sue,

The easiest way is to simply download the free program from the website as
you'll always get the latest version. Install, and when asked input the
deluxe number you have and it will activate the premium features. That easy.
If you can't find your serial number, contact Support and they will resend
you your number.

RE: [LegacyUG] Neat mug shots

2015-07-08 Thread Mark Lang
Hi Bob,

Thanks for the kudos. To tell the honest truth, it had never crossed my mind
about printing out the info. I always thought with todays browsers and the
ability to have multiple windows open, you could always keep a page from a
specific site open and flip back and forwards between program as well. It will
take a little time to implement as I am a very busy person, and I'd like to
make sure that it works proper before I upload the new code to print.

As for making the windows/frames larger, most browsers can zoom.

To increase magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ +
To decrease magnification: Ctrl+Shift+ -

See if that helps?

VERY nice tutorials. Excellent screen tips in the graphics, and I like your
do ONLY one info.

However, is there a way to get the steps to be in bigger windows(frames?)?
Also, it is impossible to print the tips - the only thing that shows is what is
in the frame. If you don't want to change the screen setup, maybe you can
add a print tip button/link?

Thanks much,

[LegacyUG] GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt FINAL FIX

2015-03-12 Thread Mark Wilson
Okay, Brian, here is my particular fix for getting Legacy to properly
recognize the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' file in the directory

  C:\%UserProfile%\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\Misc

The fact that Legacy was recognizing the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' in the

  C:\%UserProfile%\My Podcasts

directory in the first place was the clue. I took the chance and
deleted everything under the 'My Podcasts' directory, hopefully forcing
Legacy to read the 'GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt' file in 'My Documents' directory.

It worked! Now I can move on on to solving other universal mysteries

Re: [LegacyUG] Re: GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt FIXED

2015-03-12 Thread Mark Wilson
Brian, I'm really glad you mentioned the quirks of Windows file/folder
behavior. I had forgotten all about the Explorer Shell namespace modus
operendi. That jogged my memory and made me think to look in the
registry to see just where the operating system (Win 7 Ultimate, in my
case) was looking for the Documents folder. I can't tell you when,
where, or how it got changed, but the Explorer User Shell pointed the
'Personal' folder to, you probably already guessed,

  %UserProfile%\My Podcasts

Yikes! There's the problem! So, I modified the 'Personal' key to

  %UserProfile%\Documents

Voilà! (I'm a happy camper now!)

Yes, I was aware that a Microsoft's Compatible with Windows
certification requires that an app use the appropriate special folder
names and locations to store documents and app settings. I just hate to
see the Documents folder get so cluttered that it becomes difficult to
locate anything. It seems that the Documents folder is starting to be
used more and more as a registry folder. Someday, if the practice
persists, someone will need to develop a Document Folder Manager/Editor
Defragger app similar to a beefed-up Registry Editor. Remember that
Windows v3.1 had a registry, but it was seldom used. Now look at the
behemoth that the registry is today! I foresee the same happening to
the Documents folder.

Per your suggestion, Brian, I moved my data and media to the
'Documents\Legacy Family Tree' folder. The Documents folder path is
pointed to properly now, and life's great!

I probably wouldn't have thought to check the registry key had you not
mentioned the quirks of Windows file/folder behavior. Thank you for your
help!

Newer versions of Windows play games with where files are physically

the file is in the Program files folders. The program files area folders

You should point all your data to the My Docs folders Legacy created for

Thank you, Brian, for your response! I've tried everything that I can
think of, but, for some reason, the GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt file is still
not being read.

From the Master Location list, I select a location, then click on the
Geo Options Menu button, and then click on Geo Location List. Let's
say I have selected the location, Kemp, Kaufman County, Texas, United
States from the Master Location list... When the Geo Location List
opens, it reads Kemp, Kaufman, Texas, United States. The word,
County, is missing.

I can select any Individual's Information record for editing, click on
any of the location fields' Show Geo Location List buttons with the
same results. It doesn't matter whether I have the word, County,
already in the location, or not. It doesn't matter when searching the
Geo Location Database. The word, County, never does not appear in the
Core or Core+ results.

The customized GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt file and the original
GeoExtraCodes.txt file are both in the directory

  C:\Users\Mark Wilson\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\Misc

The modification to the GeoExtraCodes-Alt.txt file is

USA|111| County
United States|111| County

You can't be serious. Legacy 8 has all the great features of earlier versions
of 7.5, and the programmers are still working to accommodate those who choose
to use Family Search. I don't, but no harm if it remains an option.

So, does Family Search now control Legacy? Seems that way since Legacy 8 was
developed to accommodate Family Search, and has yet to really work for people
with ongoing projects.

And now, good, reliable, steady Legacy 7.5 is left an orphan. So sad a good
program was abandoned in search of a dubious Holy Grail.

I have found the safest and easiest way to install a new version is to download
the whole program file from the Legacy website - Download Download update,
fill in email address and the verification code at the bottom.  I then
download this file, Legacy8setp.exe to my Downloads/Legacy folder. The file
size is currently 68,718kb.

Double click on this .exe file and it installs the whole program, overwriting
parts of the previous version with any updates.  It deosn't change any data or
media or customised settings or the deluxe version code.

When I have confirmed what the build number of the new version is, I rename the
new .exe file with the build number as Legacy8setup800439.exe. I then know what
version the file is and can use this to reinstall if I need to (and to install
the updated program on my netbook).  If needs be I can also go back to a
previous version - Legacy8setup800427.exe or even Legacy75setup750278.exe.

Sometime a new update includes a change in the data format, and then you can't
easily go back to the old version without copying data through Gedcom. When you
load a family file generated under the old version of the program, if the data
format has been changed it goes through a process of checking source
information . I suspect it is not checking sources but is converting data
format - why doesn't it say what it is actually doing?

This process of updating from a full program download has worked for me for
several years with no installation problems.

Thanks for the quick response, Brian.

Your answer is very disappointing, though. I much prefer keyboard shortcuts to
reaching for the mouse or trackpad.

This might be a deal-breaker for me. I'll have to think about it. Quite happy
with v7.5, so have no qualms about continuing to use it for now - and my Deluxe
customer number for v8 just arrived a few moments ago, so I have a choice to
make.

I hope there is a plan to restore them (albeit with new key combinations that
fit the new ribbon control) in the near future.

Would it help if I put in a suggestion through the proper channels?

Kurt, Kathy, Mike,

Well that is certainly wierd. Just checked mine again also, and it is now the
correct time. Other beta testers couldn't see the problem even though I
submitted images as proof; but that has been seen before where there is a
problem others are unable to duplicate. We do our best amongst the frustration.
Will keep an eye on it though, but all seems good now for me as well.

I also noticed a problem with the current time displayed on the Alarm Center.
It was 12 hours off - displaying PM when it should have been AM. I thought it
might just be mishandling the AM/PM indicator. I switched to 24-hour clock
(Option 4.8) and all seemed well. This morning I switched back to the 12-hour
clock and it seems to be OK. I’ll have to check again in the 12 o’clock hours
(eg 0030 and 1230) and see if the problem reoccurs.

RE: [LegacyUG] Webpages

2013-09-18 Thread Mark Lang
For those unaware, I am a beta tester and the author of The Legacy Family. As
Ron knows well, I tried to have the Legacy webpages updated to a fresher look
back in November 2011. The results of which are still available on my site at
http://www.easygensolutions.com/concept/index.html if anyone is still
interested. Kathy Thompson's comment about spending 4 weeks to do the code was
not far off the mark. I spent 2-3 mths tinkering with this just at a concept
stage which still show all manner of bugs; but the purpose of it was to show
the idea quickly.

This post is simply a reminder that not everything falls on deaf ears, some of
us do try to help make Legacy that little bit better.

Cheryl,

Sorry, but it is not unrealistic. It is not too difficult to do, and I suspect
a lot easier than dotting all the i's and crossing all the t's
for the RTF report outputs.

It seems to me that those of us who produce web pages are usually prepared to
go the extra mile themselves to get the result which they require, and hence
shout less than those who are into reports or books.

Perhaps not unreasonable, but probably unrealistic. I once ran a webpage

eye candy. That was the last time I used a verifier.

I am still amazed by the number of people that believe that a
genealogy program should also be a state of the art, do everything for
me, web designer. If you want a pretty web page, learn how. There
are plenty of sites available to learn enough to achieve that end. I
prefer that my genealogy program concentrate on genealogy and set
their programming resources to that end.

For my web pages I massage the Legacy pages with some simple and
basic HTML and they come out acceptable. I do believe in content
 first, fluff a distant second.

From Vista onwards, program code was supposed to be installed in a protected

RE: [LegacyUG] New Legacy folder in 'My Documents'

Legacy is restructuring correctly how and where Legacy should be installed as
per the Windows convention. You will still be able to install Legacy where you
want but certain parts of the program will end up these other locations. Under
the User profile you will find is where Legacy places all the changes you want
to keep as it won't write to the install directory (c:\Program Files OR
c:\Program Files(x86) )

I've found a Legacy Family Tree folder, with a subfolder Legacy FS in 'My

The normal default setup for Legacy data is C:\Legacy\Data. Is there any

Michelle,

I am pretty sure that I have the set up file for the release prior to the
current update.

Yes, you would need to uninstall and reinstall and restore the old backup, but
that should not be a problem if you still have it.

BTW, Paul I see that you asked for back LegacyFS, not LUG posts. Sorry.

I’ve looked at the archive and can’t find it, but I know I’m not dreaming. It
might very well have been posted on the LegacyFS list, which unfortunately (no

Has anybody out there retained copies of LegacyFS posts from Aug 13 onwards?

Michele,

I thought this was addressed in the last few days where someone from Legacy
support did say that it’s possible to download an older version, and providing
that you have a backup from that previous version, you could restore and
continue to use the older version. It was in the context of ‘what happens if
the latest update (Aug 13) which does a file conversion somehow corrupts the
file’. Not exactly your situation as your converted working file seems fine.

I can’t find it in the archives but will continue looking.

Is it possible to go back to the previous Legacy version before this last
update? The last update did something to my Legacy file and I can’t fix it.
Tech support worked on it for quite a while yesterday and they can’t figure it
out. In a nut shell, my main file is okay. However, if I try to export,
whether to another Legacy file or a GEDCOM, the resulting file is corrupt. I
get an error 3021 if I try and use the clipboard to copy an event. It doesn’t
matter what I tell the program to export or not export. It gets even better…
If I try and open the exported GEDCOM using RootsMagic, the RM file then has an
error. I can see the list of names on the left side but if I click on anyone
nothing happens at all.

This is definitely an exporting issue because my main file remains perfectly
okay. I can copy and paste events to my heart’s content. The problem I am
having is that I have lost 2 full days of work and I am working on a project
with a deadline. If I can’t get this resolved, I am going to have to switch
over to RootsMagic for this project which I do not want to do. I am just not
familiar enough with RM and that means I will be going very S L O W.

How does the families app compare to Gedstar Pro.
I dl Gedstar last week and it seems to work fine although you cant make changes
which you apparently can with the families app.
The gedstar app is free, you only have to pay for the converter so you can use
it on several devices. Families you have to pay for app on every device but
the converter is free.
Any other differences?

[LegacyUG] synchronise databases

2013-04-20 Thread Mark scious_outlook . com sciou
With ver 7 is there some way I can do true synchronisation of the legacy
database without using intellishare or something like dropbox?
I am NOT looking for a solution such as dropbox or drive which simply copies
the entire database from one place to another.
I know there is Intellishare but this seems very outdated. To, in my case,
have to merge two databases back to a master and then copy the updated master
back to the other two computers (manually) seems ridiculous.
Surely there is some genealogy program that does real synchronisation.
For me, this one feature far outways many other fancy features that I never use.
If Legacy does not support synchronisation, is there any other program that
does?

Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to link a Source to the correct Event

2012-12-29 Thread Mark Lang
Doyce,

When you do a standard uninstall, not everything is removed from the
Legacy install directory - your Legacy Customer number for starters,
so when you reinstalled the new download program, it would have
installed to the same directory, and the program would have picked up
your customer licence number. To uninstall completely, you need to
first save all necessary files to another location (that is if you
keep your family file and photos etc in the program directory, any
usr settings etc) then when after you uninstall from the control
panel uninstall a program, you have to physically go into
MyComputer and delete the remaining program folder that Legacy was
installed in. This folder is not removed in the uninstall process.
Then when you reinstall Legacy using the install program, it will
recreate the directory, install Legacy, and when you start Legacy,
you will be required to re-input your customer number.

 Kind Regards, Mark

Re: [LegacyUG] Unable to link a Source to the correct Event

2012-12-28 Thread Mark Lang
That depends on you. You could try simply reinstalling the program in
which case it will simply over-write to the same location and all the
necessary files that the program uses. If that fixes your problem, so
be it. If not, then you may need a clean install which can be a
little time consuming depending on your level of computer skills. If
you need help there; simply ask but we will need to know your skills.
I may have a degree in computer science but I still can't read minds.
We need to know what help is required when re-installing from

If you customise the Family View to include Age at Death as you indicate, will
show the age of the individual at their death. If there is no age, they are
still alive, in which case you will need to activate the Individual Information

RE: [LegacyUG] To-Do Tasks

Monique,

As the title suggests, the All To-Do’s cover the To-Do’s for everyone in the
database. It’s a quick catch-all like the first option in the To-Do Report. If
you click on each To-Do, the first tab details who the task is for.

Gene,

It appears that you will be unable to do what you want because what you want to
do can only be achieved with Unicode. In Legacy I can only achieve the
diacritics as noted by the special characters on the special characters ribbon.

In Word 2007 however, I was able to achieve the long vowels that you mentioned
in your e-m. BTW, the small inverted v is called a circumflex accent. Because
when you transfer data from Legacy to TNG, you are using GEDCOM, which is
limited (just off the top of my head) to the first 128 characters (don’t quote
me) whereas the diacritics you require are in the extended characters not
recognised by simple text, but is by HTML. That is why you can make the changes
on your website but doesn’t transfer correctly because the codes don’t
translate.

I don't have dual monitors, but by deducing your statement; don't drag the

That is not a bug it is designed that way. Since there are a certain
number of generations/page the radio button changes the number of
generations to make a complete page. That is why we do not allow the
users to hand enter a number.

Here is a quick trick to reset the page numbers from All instead of
having to use the radio button. Change the number of generations/page,
that sets the number to a single page. Now when you change back to your
number of generations the number will again be a single page worth. You
can then use the radio button to increase the total generations by n-1
upwards. The first person on each follow-up page is a repeat from the
previous chart so there are n-1 new generations per page. For 4 Gen/page
the number will increase by 3, 5 gen will increase by 4 and 6 will
 increase by 5.

RE: [LegacyUG] Persons with only assumed/acquired surnames

Howard,

I usually never convey anything negative; so either it's my head cold or the
fact I've just turned 50, I'm afraid I just don't get it. The last part looked
like something from an Einstein manuscript. He I understood - crystal clear -
your explanation left me scratching my head.

As far as placing question marks in the name I consider a no no and do not
subscribe to such a practice. If the name is unknown (any part of it) I leave
it blank - period - if there's nothing there, you know straight off that you
don't have that information.

Secondly, Legacy will balk when it catches a name field with a ? in it. This is
in the standardisation tips.

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Persons with only assumed/acquired surnames

I handle things similarly, but over the years have found a need for
 unique
identifiers for unknown persons and a guesstimate for their year of
 birth.
This is the system I use - for what it is worth. As names become known
their bbb identifier can be recycled and so far I have not needed
 more
than the 18278 unknown individuals available using this three letter
 identification system.

 CONVENTIONS FOR UNKNOWN NAME ENTRY

Unknown First Name: enter ?am for a male, ?af for a female, ?au
 sex
 unknown.

Unknown Last Name: enter ??abbb where a in both first and last
 names
is a single capital letter code giving the approximate 33 year span (a
generation) for the estimated year of birth. The century and codes
 follow:
  YearsCodes YearsCodes
   1200-1299 A,B,C 1600-1699 M,N,O
   1300-1399 D,E,F 1700-1799 P,Q,R
   1400-1499 G,H,I 1800-1899 S,T,U
   1500-1599 J,K,L 1900-1999 V,W,X
2000-2067 Y,Z

bbb is an entry sequence code that starts with a through z, then
 aa
through az, ba to bz etc. An example using a female with unknown
first name, born about 1750, who is the 54th person with unknown last
 name
would be entered as ?Qf ??Qbc.

Formula for arriving at date code for b.(birth) to use with unknown
 name is:
 1. Use b. if known
 2. Use b. of spouse, or spouse of spouse (other wife etc.)
 3. Use first m.-25
 4. Use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent
 5. For bp use bc-33 where bc=b. of child in next generation
For bc use bp+33 where bp=b. of parent in previous generation
 6. Use d.-65
 8. Use dp-32 where dp=d. of parent
 9. Use mc-53 where mc=m. of child
   10. Use 33 years per generation from any known date.

RE: [LegacyUG] 2012 webinars - closed captions.

I am extremely hard of hearing, wear hearing aids and find some webinars hard
to hear (even with full volume). My preference would be Closed Captions
(subtitles). Use them all the time on TV and videos. Only way to hear. Live
captions is always behind, and closed captions will take too long to get video
free to people for 10 days. However post production closed captions to CD

If I also check the box MRIN numbers, the they show up for the marriages in the

OH I see it: Look on the main page for the FGR just above the Title box:
Add MRIN to title. I think this is new, though.

RE: [LegacyUG] 7.5.0.154 - Problem with Page Numbers (Family Group Report)

2012-03-02 Thread Mark Lang
Kay, Paul,

I can confirm with a BUT.

I am using a new Beta build, and it appears that this is all correct for but
the Source Citations page. With or without Chron pages.

I'll take this to the beta testers.

I can confirm I have the same issue, I'm still at release 142.

In my case, it happens when I include Chronology Reports. The FGS
prints, then the Chronology Reports for the two parents prints, then
the sources start on a new page. It's that new page of sources that
doesn't have the of on it.

Kay, are you including Chronology reports, or have you selected Start
on new page' on the sources tab. It looks like when sources start on a
new page, it loses the total pages.

 Thanks Evert Leon -

The Family Group Report is the only one that uses the X of X
numbering convention as far as I know.

Header/Footer Option: Include page numbers on report - Include page
total after page number (e.g., 1 of 4)

It matters not which page number position I select - top left, top
right, bottom left, bottom right - results are always the same as
 follows:

 1 (1 of 6) - 2 (2 of 6) and so on. On one report it ceases (X of X)
after 4 of 4 and starts numbering 5, 6, 7 - on another report it stops
 after 5 of 5 and starts with 6, 7, 8.

I also question why it reads 1 (1 of 6) rather than just 1 of 6.

I deselected the option to include page total which resolves the issue.
I had never tried the option before anyway.

 Does this help?

As Dennis Kowallek indicated in his reply, you are seeing the special
codes inserted into the rtf file for various purposes. The example you
mention is the markup used to tell word to index that name when you
create a name index. I am not expert enough in Word to advise you but
there should be a way to turn off the display of those markups and show
 only the resulting text.

Subject: [LegacyUG] V7.5.0.142 Web Page Creation

Today, I have been given to understand from Legacy Technical Support
that this is the only list we support,
 so here goes:

After updating to Legacy Version 7.5.0.142 last week, the first time I
used 'Create Web Pages', the customized
settings, which I have kept updated and saved over the last almost-
seven years did not show up in the 'Create
 Web Pages' window.

I then tried to 'Load' the most recently saved (using previous Legacy
 Version 7.5.0.112) customized settings
in an attempt to restore them. Result was that nothing changed on the
 'Create Web Pages' window, and
subsequent investigation showed that the .wf0 file I had tried to load
from was wiped out: apparently replaced
with some default values - that particular .wf0 file size had changed
from around 9KB to 2KB. I then tried to
load from the next most recent .wf0 file, it likewise produced no
changes in the window and was likewise wiped
out. Fortunately I had backups to restore everything from.

I have pointed out to Technical Support that I was not the only one
experiencing this problem by pointing at
 the website:
http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/WUL/message/792 - where there are some
very unhappy Legacy users with an
 identical issue, recently posted.

Technical Support first responded with: Unfortunately, when the
 programmers change settings options for
reports or web pages, this is going to happen. There's no way around
it., and then even went as far as to
offer me guidance on how to restore the customized settings, i.e. I
would suggest making a list of the
options you have set (I do quick screen shots and past them into a Word
doc) and then update and reselect your
choices. Of course this entails restoring my system to the previous
version of Legacy (having backups, I
could do that, but...), copying the saved settings (to something
external to Legacy), re-updating Legacy, and
then restoring the saved settings from that external saved source.

To me, this is an unacceptable update method, especially given the
heads-up that this is going to happen
 again in future updates.

 Looking for comments / suggestions.

 Eric

 Mark,

Outlook (2007 is what I am using) also does have a true 'thread' view,
and it works for this list.

A real threading rely on unique Message-Id.
WHen I write a mail to the list i may have this:
 Message-Id: op.v8nwwjk5oxyrqf@bk2
When it appears on the list it has changed to:
 Message-Id: -424906331_103468...@mail.legacyusers.com
 which is wrong!!
It should not change at all.
For a real threading it should use
 In-Reply-To: the unique message-Id here

In the above case it should have been:
 In-Reply-To: op.v8nwwjk5oxyrqf@bk2

You just replied to your own post.
 Your first mail had
 Message-Id: -424884225_103469...@mail.legacyusers.com

Your second mail should've had a In-Reply-To field referencing that ID,
 but it didn't.
Your second mail had this field:

 In-Reply-To: -424884678_103469...@mail.legacyusers.com

Which, as you can see, is not the same number/ID as you original
 Message-Id.
This causes threading to, at best, be a simple grouping and sorting by
date/time, which is not very useful if you want to really follow a
 thread..

Aha! Now I know what you guys are talking about. I'm using Hotmail and
I, like Bjorn, had to stay on top of reading/deleting my messages
because the Hotmail settings were to read msgs individually. Now that
I've changed the Read setting to conversations, it lumps them by
subject. However, this particular message from Mark did not get
included in that thread--because he changed the subject--Although I'm
sure he replied to that thread. So now, I understand the problem...

 Hi,

I have it set to *Default - notify me only when programs try to make
changes to my computer and that setting has never caused me any
problems in Legacy (or any other program) that I am aware of. Yes, I
have the program installed in C:\Legacy, but my data (fdb file) and
multimedia are outside of the Legacy folder.
 Win 7/64 bit.

I certainly wouldn't want to change it to 'Never Notify' unless I
 absolutely had to.

Are there specific situations where Legacy can't handle UAC?

Paul,

Point taken. I thought the discussion was aimed at Legacy installed in the
Program Files, then yes turn UAC off. If in the desired C:\Legacy, then by all
means it is not necessary. Trying to keep multi-thread discussions and
inputting data and half other things at once it best left for multi-thread

 Hi Mark,

But that's my question, I guess. We know that Legacy discourages
(that's putting it mildly) installing in the Program files directory,
but as long as one installs in the recommended C:\Legacy directory, I
have yet to hear why UAC needs to be turned off.

I did this for myself as well when I went to University only a decade plus ago.
Also included an extra Graduation event because when you are conferred with

2011-12-30 Thread Mark Lang
OK, but if you broke your searches into smaller groups and scanned the results
list of these groups, you would eventually be able to note the records you want
this way. May take a fraction longer.

I just tried my way again this time using
Individual - Any Date - Before - 1893 AND
Individual - Any Date - After - 1891

And the result included both those with dates such as 1892 and 16 May 1892 BUT
you had to scroll the list to see which ones were without Day and Months.

You may just have to eat that elephant one bite at a time.

Not exactly what I wanted, Mark. I have many marriage dates, usually

If I could do that, I would want to move on to deaths and the period

Sherry, Robert,

It doesn't matter (when using Word anyway) when you create the Index in Word. I
do this all the time with the books I create (The Legacy Family), especially my
new book (The Legacy Handbook). Yes Word pushes things about, but if you've
already included an Index, when you add to your book, simply navigate to the
index and right-click any item (it doesn't matter which one) and select the
option to Update Field. Easy.

I''m not sure what 're-set' is. I have gone into the relationships window and
looked and it is set to 999. I opened the relationship calculator with the 6th
great selected and clicked 'calculate relationships' and it still didn't
change...I know I'm missing something simple.Sorry if I'm being dense but
if I could get a little more specific details on how to reset? Thanks, Kathy

Have you re-set the relationship calculator since adding the new people (i.e.

then recalculate if you need the relationship to help you enter more new people
etc. Otherwise, reset after you have finished entering new people for that
session.

Subject: [LegacyUG] relationship indicators

I have the relationship indicator turned on so it shows right above their name.
Love that feature by the way :-)

I have a 5th great grandfather/grandmother that shows up and the name is
'bolded' to show the direct line (another cool feature).

For some reason, when I entered the parents for the 5th great grandfather, I
don't get my relationship indicator anymore - it doesn't 'bold' him in the list
with his siblings and it doesn't show 6th great grandfather/mother over his
parents' names. I thought maybe the program only showed up to 5 and thought
that was rather stingy of them (haha!) but decided to look at some other lines
and I have another that at least shows to 7th great so that's not the answer.

What might I have done here? I've gotten quite used to having those two
'direct line' features to help me navigate my file and I'm entering multiple
generations beyond this one so I figure I'd better get this fixed now.

Thank you! Kathy

RE: [LegacyUG] Locations list

2011-11-28 Thread Mark Lang
Not that I'm aware of. The closest I could get to your wish is

Reports All Reports Location Report

On the Include tab, use
All Locations
Master Location Summary counts (this option minimises data in the
report)
On the Options tab, use
Check first two options - Long and Short location name
Sort order - standard left to right

Then either Preview or Print.

I found no way to include prepositions.

Is there a report which will simply list all locations, their short
 names and prepositions? Something like.

Alphabetically first locationShort version of thisin
Alphabetically second location Second short nameat

 and so on?

RE: [LegacyUG] Consolidated location and address suggestions

2011-11-21 Thread Mark Lang
Mary,

I am sorry, but that just simply does not make sense. The whole US is divided
into states which is divided into counties. I know of no situation where there
is a place that is in no-man's land, that is just uneconomically unviable in
any first world environment.

Please enlighten us how a US city cannot be in a county, I really do want to
know.

For example, in the U.S. there are cities that are not within a county.

RE: [LegacyUG] Consolidated location and address suggestions

2011-11-21 Thread Mark Lang
I do not recall ever studying Independent Cities when I did American History in
my Uni degree, so I will research this myself off list. Here in Oz, we have
states, no counties, only Cities and Suburbs (aka Towns). The only similarity
to a County we have are Councils/Shires that are groups of Suburbs/Towns but
that's a political jurisdiction not geographical.

End of rant. Getting OT.

What about Washington D. C.? What county is it in? How about
Richmond, VA? What County is it in? there are several independent
Cities in the US that do not have a county associated with them. The
next level of jurisdiction is the state in these cases.

RE: [LegacyUG] Two sourcing questions

2011-11-14 Thread Mark Lang
Tony,

Re: Q2:
The screen capture program I use (SnagIt) does capture the whole page by auto
scrolling when it captures the web page - the final image is a longer one than
when viewing through a browser. When you source a web page, also include an
access date. Therefore if the page disappears after that date, you have a
recorded date of when you viewed it, and an image of what it was.

 Subject: [LegacyUG] Two sourcing questions

Question 1. I have a few streets in censuses which no longer appear on
maps. When I find out where the street used to be, I like to put that
information into the notes field for the location. However, there
doesn't appear to be a way to add a source to the notes field. In
 other
words, when I go View master Lists Locations, select a location and
edit it, there is no source button. Am I missing something?

Question two. What is the best way to source a web page? I know how
 to
do the source, I'm more interested in the best way to ensure that the
information doesn't disappear when the web page concerned is updated,
 deleted etc.

One possibility would be to screen-print the page and attach the jpg to
the source, but sometimes the information spreads over more than one
physical screen or scrolls down and then screen prints aren't really
 useful.

[LegacyUG] doing an event search

2011-11-09 Thread Mark Wilby
Hi folks,

What I am trying to do is search for a single event that contains a specific
date AND description. But when I search, for example, an event date of 1841
and an event description of not looked for, the search returns all 1841
events and all events with the description of not looked for. Can any kind
soul help?

RE: [LegacyUG] doing an event search

2011-11-09 Thread Mark Wilby
Hi Ron,

Yes you understand the problem well. I had another look at the search page and
tried to think a bit deeper. The primary condition does say “look for whom”, so
maybe you can only search for an individual who has criteria 1 and/or criteria
2. What I need to do is search for an event with these criteria. Can this be
done? I’m beginning to think not.

Mark,

My apologies, after posting I realised that my answer just does not make sense
when only two conditions are applied – it is valid for a third though.

I have tried searching as you suggest for gardeners in the 1901 census and 8
were found, so I am not getting the results which you indicate ie. all
individuals with an Event-Date of 1901 (irrespective of Event Description) and
all individuals with an Event-Description of ‘gardener’ (irrespective of date),
which is what I understand your question to mean.
