That might be your problem -- you shouldn't be contaminating your glass or your rods by washing them with tap water.  You only need to wipe the silver rods off with a paper towel -- and once in awhile, wipe out the inside of your brewing jar the same way -- with a paper towel.  I wouldn't drink
