[wdvltalk] PHP job opportunity - will discuss details off list

2009-02-17 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi list

I'm in over my head a little and running out of time with a job I have
on at the moment, so I'm looking for some help with certain aspects of it.

Part of the project is a basic scheduler/calendar system that will allow
back-end users to assign courses to the calendar from a list held in a
database. The duration of courses can be a set number of days spread out
over time, such as once a week, a concurrent block of days (skipping
weekends) or a couple of hours in a single day. The same course,
however, can be scheduled a number of times.

At this stage there doesn't need to be any facility for capacity or
clashing schedules, nor does it need to be styled in anyway - I'll be
integrating it into the overall site. I will need though a run-down of
how it works and such so I know what's going on - this will be the core
of a number of off-shoot systems (such as users booking in on a
scheduled course or booking in on allocated studio time) and I can then
extend it at a later date.

It doesn't have to be the greatest, slickest piece of coding ever - it
just needs to work.

I've looked through many open-source systems and to be honest they're
either self-contained apps so I'd have problems integrating it into my
project as a whole, or I've gotten lost trying to reverse-engineer them
so I can do my own. And to be honest I want to learn from this so I want
to have my own system I can develop.

If anybody's interested, drop me a line off-list as soon as possible so
we can discuss timescales, money, etc. and I can work you in as part of
my schedule.

Cheers all

Ross

[wdvltalk] Calendar and booking system in PHP

2009-02-04 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi list

I'm trying to write a simple calendar and booking system in PHP. What I
want to achieve is assigning a timeslot to any given course from a
database. The course would define its duration in days and using that
information allocate time in the calendar.

My PHP is rudimentary at best and although I can do basic
database-driven stuff, I'm having a hard time approaching this one. How
do I go about generating a calendar? How do I assign time slots and
avoid weekends? I've tried downloading a number of calendars and booking
systems to try and reverse engineer, or at least see how they've
approached it, but everything's either paid for, heavily complex (and
thus goes over my head mostly) or don't do what I want.

So, I turn to you guys here. I guess for now I'm really after
enlightenment on the fundamentals of it all - how do I structure my
database and generate a calendar. From there I guess once I know how my
days are stored I can work out how to assign different data to those
dates, but any tips on that would be good.

Ta muchly for any pointers on this one.

Ross (hardly MOU any more!)

[wdvltalk] Monthly reminder e-mails in PHP

2009-01-14 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Hi list

I'm working on a training feedback project whereby users will supply a
monthly report on how they feel their training is going and how well
they are meeting their personal proficiency targets.

The client would rather not rely on the users' memory to do these
reports and would like a reminder e-mail sent out automatically every
month.

How would I go about doing this? As a user can take their course at
any time in the month I'd need to send them a reminder on that date
every calendar month.

Tips and pointers muchly appreciated.

Cheers Dave

I did think the big bit was going to be dealing with different month
lengths and to be honest I'll probably fudge the numbers and round
down start dates to the 28th avoiding this problem entirely.

I'll go have a look for some cron stuff then unless anybody knows any
good cron resources.

Cheers!

Well, assuming that you have a database containing a list of users, which
contains the date they started their course, it shouldn't be hard to set up
a cron job that looks for people who should be emailed, and email them.

Most of the complexity comes from working with dates. For instance, you say
that date every calendar month - what if they signed up 31st Jan? 31st +
 Jan + 1 month - is that 28th Feb or 1st March?

Let a decent date library take most of the strain, and it shouldn't be too
 hard.

For the easiest approach, email them every 30 days, then you can just have a
cron job that looks for all users where the last_sent_nagging_email column
is 30 days ago, and send them the email (then update that column, so that
they don't get emailed again until it's due). That takes away most of the
 nasty date manipulation :)

 Cheers

Re: [wdvltalk] strange mssql problem

2008-11-19 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Steve:

I had to use SQL Server recently and I found it to be a pain with
things like this, especially when I have next-to-no experience with
it. I can't really suggest where to look to fix your issues directly,
but two things I found very useful in working out my own issues:

-- write a script in ASP (if you can) that performs the same
operations on this table as you're trying to do in PHP to see if
there's any problem interfacing with this table over web techs (for
some reason I did)
-- if you don't already have it, try accessing the SQL Server using
SQL Server Management Studio (tis free from MSDN) and have a play.
There's some nice tools in there to check connections, permissions and
such, plus you can run queries directly through the GUI and get
feedback. I think there's also extensive logging you can access too so
that might show up weirdness if things don't behave the way you'd
expect.

Sorry I can't help much more than that!

 Hi all,

We are using php to connect to a local MS SQL database, and all seems to be
 fine.
We are connecting to several tables within the same database, and are able
 to insert, update, delete, etc.
However, there is one table that refuses to let us update, and we can not
 figure out why.

We get no errors from the script, but no records updated.
If I echo out the sql statement, connect to the database with Access as the
same user, and copy/paste the query into Access, the update works.

We have looked at the table in every way we know how to look, and we can't
find anything that would stop php from doing updates.

The table is part of a purchased application and is a very important one, so
we are wondering if there could be some restrictions defined somewhere.
Any thoughts on where to look?
Any special log somewhere that might tell us why the updates aren't working?

 Any help appreciated.
 steve

Re: [wdvltalk] [OT] Windows Licensing Queries...

2008-11-12 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Picking up something on Tim said, in my experience I've never needed
any CALs whatsoever. I've always had teh server serving some data
access or whatever and all connections to those services have either
been web access or similar generic calls from locally-run apps -
because I've never had any actual specific user with accounts log in
to the server and have specific user stuff on there you don't need
CALs.

Even if your VB app is using specific user logons, you may still not
need CALs because you're only transferring data to a central store.

You will need CALs if you're storing user-specific information on the
server and local user accounts require authentication with the server
and retrieve settings (like a domain logon).

So yeah, work out exactly how, what and why the VB app is connecting
to the server, how that relates to user logos and then call M$.

MOU

2008/11/12 Furry, Tim [EMAIL PROTECTED]:
 Matt wrote...
The Server will be running a bespoke database application and therefore
clients will be accessing the database. The clients will _not_ be accessing
any file/print services on this server, although they will be authenticating
 against it.

I started to look into this however I can't work out if they organisation
needs extra licenses for the desktops if all they are doing is authentication
and access a database that is not an MS product.

 Tim replies...
It depends a lot on your application and its footprint. For instance, we put
in a Win2k3 server but I knew it was only going to serve web apps, so it
doesn't need CALs and we were able to go with a much less expensive Win2k3
version (web version, it's like $500US). I can't install MS databases on it
due to the web version but our database was elsewhere anyway.

If your clients are running a VB app that is located on the server, I think
you'll probably need CALs since each user will have to authenticate against
the server itself before running the app. If your clients are running the VB
app on local machines and it reaches across the network to access the server
for the database, you may or may not need CALs. It's my understanding that
CALs are primarily needed where users are directly accessing the server to
 run some application.

Cheryl recommended calling MS, and I do too, but you need to gather the
required information first. At a former job we got three different answers
from three different MS reps, so it may pay to poke around some. We finally
decided against CALs and structured the situation to keep direct server
 logins to a minimum.

HTH...don't take it for written in stone though...MS changes licensing every
so often and it's a real sore spot with small to medium sized businesses. :)

 to validate!

 Thanks again,

 Matt:

I'm always expanding my PHP knowledge - explain to me what the - does.

 MOU

'-' is the way you access methods and properties in a class/object... For
 example:
  $my_var = $my_class-getMyVar();

 Or

 $my_class-my_string = 'foo';

Or, inside the class, you can use the $this keyword e.g.

 $this-my_var = $this-getMyVar();

There is also the scope resolution operator :: which allows access to static
and constant members of a class (which causes an error if the method called
 uses $this)

This is a fairly simple explanation (and it took me a while to get it
straight in my head) so maybe some reading at http://uk.php.net/class would
 be a good idea

 HTH a bit

I started proper OOP a few months ago when I started working with Joomla!...

And I don't know if it matters any more but personally I'd add a space
before the closing slash in your input tag and all similar self-closing
tags.

MOU

Matthew,
It seems that Firefox is more forgiving than IE when it comes to little
things like closing slashes. It's pretty amazing that an entire page can
explode when one is missing but in IE it can. Check these lines out in
your source code:

legendDocument Metadata/legend
ol
   lilabel for=titleDocument Title:label
  input type=text name=title id=title class=text/
   /li

Your closing label tag is missing the slash. When I put one in,
everything falls into place. :)

Re: [wdvltalk] url rewrite help needed

2008-10-20 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Sounds to me that you'll have much better luck approaching this in a
much more secure way instead of trying to fudge through limited tools
available to you.

If this school is even partially serious about protecting its pupils
then they should be open to discussion and you can illustrate these
difficulties you're having and the best way to achieve this goal.

To be honest though if this sensitive information is run from the
school's intranet then either they need to set up a secure VPN so you
can dial-in directly to the intranet or you simply don't provide
external access - if the school wants this information accessible then
they should really give the pupils provision to access it within
school hours.

Just my opinion!

The only actual security is restricting access to authenticated users

Ask yourself this: can you tell parents that you're doing everything

protect their account information? If not, then do it.

But trying to hide a query string or URL is not doing anything for
 anyone. Really. :-)

 Array

Is there any way to quickly recurse through the array looking only at one
style of index (either the numerical one or the named one, I really don't
care) so I can just display the information once on the screen instead of
 twice?

 Thanks,

Re: [wdvltalk] JavaScript/CSS question

2008-09-02 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Riva:

CSS properties would be found in an object's style property. The
JavaScript names are the same usually as the CSS names, only the
JavaScript equivalent of hyphenated names is to remove the hyphen and
capitalise the second word. The values you give them are the same as the
CSS values

For example...

obj.style.display = block is the same as display: block
obj.style.marginTop = 10px is the same as margin-top: 10px

I had a look at the link you gave and couldn't see what you were
referring to I'm afraid. From what I gather from your post though you
want the form to move up and down depending on whether or not a menu
dropdown is visible or not.

Personally, instead of setting the CSS top property of the form
(presumably that's what you're thinking) I'd just write your HTML to
have your menu dropdowns as block elements inside your document flow
(i.e. not position:absolute which makes them floaty layers over the top
of everything else) and then use display:block or display:none to switch
them on and off - the document flow will change depending on if the menu
is physically rendered or not and the browser will shunt the form up and
down accordingly.

Dead rough example:

p id=para1This is a paragraph/p
p id=para2So is this/p
form
   input type=text value=This is a text box /
/form

If you set the second paragraph's display CSS to none it will
physically not render which will shunt the form up a bit underneath
paragraph 1. If you then set paragraph 2's display back to block it
will render and the form will shunt back down again.

Have a look at http://thenvqcentre.co.uk/funding.php (it's not quite
finished yet so watch out for weird floating) and select you want to
train for NVQ Level 2 (allow pop-ups for this one if you have to).
You'll see how the yes | no block shunts down every time a new question
is confirmed, as do the end messages.

Is that the sort of thing you're talking about, only being able to shunt
upwards too?

Hi all,

I was wondering if it is possible to find out the value of a css
property (using JavaScript) and then change it? For example, I have a
form under a drop down menu. The client wants the form to move down as
the menu expands. I made the drop down menu using jQuery and I have
figured out how to get the form to drop when the menu opens, but I
cannot figure out how to get the form to move back up again, or drop a
different amount depending on which link in the drop down menu the
user clicks. Does that make sense? The page is here:

one section to another are reasonably common, and most users shouldn't
stumble on them for long, but checkboxes are a hell of a lot more
common, and most users just instinctively know what to do).

Re-reading your message, I see you need each unit to be either not part
of the course being edited, mandatory, or optional.

You could use radio buttons, and list the units like:

 http://www.preshweb.co.uk/misc/rossdemo.html

That way, all units are listed, there's no need for Javascript to be
enabled, and it's clear and simple how to operate it. It should also be
easy to act on the data when it's submitted to the backend :)

 Would that work for you?

Re: [wdvltalk] [Bulk] Creating a list of entries to submit in a form

Thanks for the comments Tim.

With a fresh pair of eyes this morning I quickly looked up the
Javascript methods for select boxes and had a play with selecting
all list items through code before submitting the form. Functionally
it works fine for my purposes (and budget) so I'm happy with this for
now, but I'm planning on playing with a more elegant and pretty
solution once this job's out of the way.

Thanks to all!

[wdvltalk] Creating a list of entries to submit in a form

2008-08-14 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Me again

I'll tell you something, my brain has gone totally blank and I can't
figure out what I'm supposed to be doing.

In my qualifications project thingy, I have all my course units data
stored in my database (thanks Matt!) and want to put them all in a big
list so the user can select which ones they want to add to their
qualification either as mandatory units or optional units. I then want
to submit the contents of these mandatory and optional lists with my
form and put their data in the relevant data tables.

Not a problem in theory, but I've hit a problem with building the HTML
interface that's hurting my very fragile brain.

What I've done so far is used 3 select objects set as lists with some
buttons and a smattering of Javascript to move these list items around -
selecting an item in the course units list and clicking the add buttons
successfully adds that item to the mandatory or optional units lists as
appropriate and removes it from available units. The process is
reversible too.

Then I try to submit the thing. Even though the lists have options in
them, unless I actually select any of the options contained no data for
that list is submitted - obvious looking back on it as that's how these
form controls work.

Am I barking up the wrong tree using select boxes for this? Can I use
Javascript to internally select every item in the list as soon as I
submit the form? Is there a better way of doing it?

Clear as mud I know, but cheers in advance.

Re: [Bulk] [wdvltalk] Creating a list of entries to submit in a form

2008-08-14 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Do you have a page we can look at?

OK I've put a rough demo up. Start at
http://thenvqcentre.co.uk/admin/quals.php to list all qualifications in
the system (there's only 1 so far for testing). From here either create
a new qualification to see the course units list fully populated or edit
the existing one to see all 3 lists populate appropriately.

In the edit screen, you can see what I want to achieve in terms of
operation: all the course units on the left, mandatory and optional
units on the right, add and remove between lists using the buttons.

Saving the qualification will display POST data. As you can see, there's
no entry for man or opt as no items in the lists were clicked. As I
said in the initial message I realise now that this is how a select is
supposed to work, but I've been a dope and gone down this route trying
to get it to do something entirely different.

So now you've seen what I want to achieve, any suggestions on how to do
it properly? Is using select lists in this way incorrect or can I make
it work? What are the alternatives?

Ta muchly peeps.

Re: [wdvltalk] Help with MySQL database design and operation

Thanks Matthews

Yahoo's no longer letting me send via their SMTP servers so until
recently I've not been able to actually communicate with the list -
not that I've been able to help much recently anyway! I'm all fully
moved to GMail now so that's one less thing to worry about.

Let me go over this so I know I've got it right in my head - you have
a table detailing qualification data only, a table detailing course
unit data only and then a third table that defines the lists of course
units the qualifications have in them.

Adding a course unit to a qualification would actually add a record to
the third table, so even though the same course code may appear in a
number of records, each record is only assigned to one qualification.

Ah I get you - many-to-one and one-to-many relationships.

Cool! Makes sense to me. I'll press on and get back to you - virtual
beers on their way!

a comma-delimited list of unit IDs in qualifications records the best
way, and is there any easy way of updating all qualifications records
at once if I delete a unit record.

 I missed this bit out!

If you use the previous email as a guide, when you delete a unit/module, all
you need to do is run a delete from modules where moduleid = $x and delete
from course_modules where moduleid = $x and the chances of it being listed
for any course have been removed.

[wdvltalk] Help with MySQL database design and operation

2008-08-11 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi List - been a while.

In a nutshell my knowledge of database design and operation is very
basic so I come to you for some advice on how best to set up a simple
database and how to carry out certain operations on it.

What I want to achieve is a database of qualifications that a user can
search through. Each qualification is made up of a title, qualification
level (1 to 4, can be multiple values), a list of mandatory units and a
list of optional units. These units come from a user-managed list. Each
unit is made up of a title and a type (mandatory or optional).

Here's what I'm thinking so far:

Units table has a unique record ID, title text, type text

Qualifications table has a unique record ID, title text, level text
(comma-delimited values), mandatory units text (comma-delimited values
of units ID), optional units text (comma-delimited values of units ID).

First off, is this the best way of doing it? As each qualification lists
units drawn from data in the units table, is using a comma-delimited
list of unit IDs the best way of building that list, or are there
alternatives?

The main operation I need a hand with is deleting units from the units
table. Obviously, if I delete a unit I want it removed from all
qualifications that use it automatically. With that in mind, again, is a
comma-delimited list of unit IDs in qualifications records the best way,
and is there any easy way of updating all qualifications records at once
if I delete a unit record.

I'm using PHP and MySQL for this.

For now, help specifically with this would be appreciated as the client
has moved the deadline forward so I don't have much in-depth reading
time, however any resources that would help educate me in the wonderful
world of MySQL database design and SQL would be would be welcome.

I await your wisdom!

[wdvltalk] Securing web traffic

2008-01-14 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Hi list

There's always something new to learn and this is the first time I've
really needed to secure a web session in a client project, and I'm
after a few pointers if I may...

Fundamentally, the project is an online questionnaire which stores
responses in a back-end database. That database can be queried by the
client and reports generated. Easy stuff. Now given the nature of the
data can be considered sensitive (mental health in the workplace) the
client wants this to be as secure as possible.

So my questions are twofold:
Firstly, shall I just secure the login process and set a session
cookie or do I secure the entire session?

Secondly, how exactly do I go about it? As far as I gather I don't
necessarily need to do anything different in programming but I'll need
to run everything through SSL and have the appropriate certificates.
Or am I wrong here?

Pointers, info and tips please much appreciated as always!

Deb:

Is the laptop set up to boot from the CD because regardless of what's
happened to the hard drive you shouldn't get this message if you're
successfully booting from the CD.

You'll need to get into the laptop's BIOS and change the boot settings
(or boot priority) to fire off the CD-ROM first.

If it does prove to be the hard drive then I'm not sure about $US but
I'm sure it'll be worth getting a bigger drive than 30GB as even
laptop drives are rapidly coming down in price.

RE: [wdvltalk] OT: Ram question

2007-09-17 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Deb

It's more of a power consumption issue than a performance issue when
you talk about filling up your RAM slots. There's only a negligible
performance difference when running 2x2GB against 4x1GB, but having 4
slots in your motherboard will draw a little more power if green
computing is something you're interested in.

The big performance issue is in regards to dual-channel mode that is
part of today's multi-thread/multi-core processors, and this goes back
to processors as far as Intel's Hyperthreaded Pentium 4s (so about 4
years). In order to run in dual-channel mode, i.e. run multiple
processes in parallel for best performance, you must run matched pairs
of RAM sticks. If you run an odd number of sticks, dual-channel mode
will be disabled and you'll get a significant performance hit.

Now, 32-bit Windows XP has the 4GB RAM limit because of the way 32-bit
systems do their internal addressing. The upper limit of RAM you'll
see is 3.6GB, so you will get some use of the 4th/2nd stick, but the
key here is that you'll have to sacrifice this capacity in order to
benefit from dual-channel mode when you run over 2GB of RAM.

Truth be told, short of editing HD video footage or doing some crazy
3D rendering I don't think you need to increase your RAM from 2GB.
Might be better to put the money into something else, like a new
processor if your current system architecture will allow and upgrade.

It's Flash RAM instead of a traditional hard drive, which means
significantly faster I/O access and significantly reduced power
consumption (i.e. extends battery life).

In all honest however don't bother right now. Pure Flash drives are
too small and too expensive to be of any significant use at the
moment, and the Hybrid drives offer no performance or battery life
gains (and Windows Vista is required).

I wouldn't bother for now Tris

If it's your client who wants to put the address on the site then it
might be an idea to go over the risks with them and suggest the PHP
contact form. If it's you who wants to put it on (and we can't talk you
out of it lol) then you could try populating a clickable mail link using
a PHP script - not sure bots can get at it then.

To answer your direct question, I'm not sure how spambots scan for mail

Re: [wdvltalk] Flash alternatives

2007-01-31 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
I'd concur to a degree that an all-Flash site is probably not the way to
go for most clients, especially if you have to learn Flash as you go,
but on a personal level I would actively encourage you to dive and give
it a go because Flash is a long way away from the fancy intro and
overkill animation monstrosity everybody loved to hate a few years
back, and if put into the right hands it really is flipping the bird to
a lot of its critics and naysayers:

• Actionscript is built on the same ECMA spec as Javascript so you can
jump in and figure a lot out quickly if you have any previous JS experience
• Flash accessibility with version 8 covers a good deal of bases (Flash
9 is set to be even better) and doesn't seem to be too hard once you
know your way around Flash (although I've not had time to have a proper
go at it yet)
• It's more than just pretty - data-driven and data-heavy applications
are just as viable as animations (I'm adding the finishing touches to a
v1 Flash-PHP content management system as we speak and I'm pretty
excited to be honest!)
• Flash video kicks the crap out of any other web video format not only
in terms of quality and file sizes, but also ease of delivery - no
codecs to worry about it's all delivered through the Flash Player
• Google can read and index Flash content if you create it properly (and
there are rumours that Yahoo! is close to doing it too)

To be entirely honest, I don't have a problem with all-Flash sites and
similar rich media experiences and it's not going to be very long before
all these accessibility and SEO problems are going to be worked out. And
when it's viable, everybody's going to want them. It was the same with
Flash intros - everybody wanted them because they look cool and
everybody else has them - so I say get a head start.

And don't both with anything other than the full, real-deal Flash.
Personally, I really don't like these Flash-content creators as they
always seem to be one-trick ponies, geared purely towards animation or
rudimentary interactivity with no control of what happens under the hood
(Adobe LiveMotion anybody?) aimed at the bottom end of web designers
who think because they can type words into FrontPage they are
professional. Flash 9's out pretty soon and under £328 for the
standard Flash 8 is good value I reckon (and £575 for the Professional
aint bad either).

Yeah, I like Flash :P

RE: [wdvltalk] Picture question

2007-01-30 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
If the images are pixelated it's more than likely you've had to scale up the
images to get them that big - what was your original source? Digital cameras
don't shoot as big as 5 x 7 300dpi so you've pretty much doubled (or even
tripled) the size of the file to fit the dimensions, which will cause
horrible pixelation and distortion.

Try doing things the old fashioned way - print the images out at their
native size on good quality paper and settings then scan them in at 600dpi.
You should then have enough material to work with the then *shrink* the
images to your required size, which will maintain quality and get rid of
most of the Moiré patterns you'll get with high-res scanning (although it's
advisable to do that clean-up before you shrink).

Can't offer any specific advice with GIMP though as I'm a Photoshop boy all
round...always worth the money.

2007-01-17 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

How about:

Specialist menu
Alternative menu
Pre-order menu

or if you're not a fan of repeating menu too much

Specialist catering
Event catering
For events

Truth be told if you have a navigation element dedicated to choices of
menus I'd drop the menu altogether to have something like (drawing on
your listed items already)

Restaurant/Dinner
Catering
Gourmet Dessert
Specialist
Event

etc. as menu is implied by the topic of the site/section. You could
prefix the navigation itself with something like Our menus or We have
a variety of menu types for every occasion.

RE: [wdvltalk] OT: convert FAT32 drive to NTFS?

2007-01-08 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Hi Deb

I'd strongly recommend you convert your drive to NTFS. There are a number of
benefits to using NTFS, such as minimising wasted space when you save
data, data encryption and file system security. FAT32 is now seriously
outdated when working with large hard drives, especially if you're running
XP or Vista. Because of the way FAT32 works you simply have no choice but to
split data up into 2GB blocks if you attempt your backup.

I'm very very surprised that a Vista ready machine from HP of all people
have formatted the drive as FAT32 - very sloppy and short-sighted in my
opinion.

You won't lose any data doing the command-line drive conversion the Genie
Soft site details.

Re: [wdvltalk] OT: is i-LINK firewire for transferring data?

2006-12-29 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Deb:

Firewire is Firewire at the end of the day - the different ends to the
cable are just to fit different sizes of devices (same as the mini USB2
connectors you get on cameras and phones - it's still USB2) so in theory
you should be OK.

In terms of speed, USB 2.0 is a little faster than Firewire 400 in pure
data rate (460Mbps) but from what I can recall (and it's still the
holiday season so correct me if the alcohol is talking here) USB 2.0
runs data transmissions serially so everything connected to the USB
channel has to share the bandwidth. Firewire runs parallel connections
so it can serve 400Mbps to each connection, but it can't run as many at
once as USB (hence USB is more popular).

The biggie here is that I don't think Firewire can downgrade its
connection speeds like USB 2.0 can: you can plug a USB 2.0 device into a
USB 1.1 socket and it will still run, just at a fraction of the speed.
From my experiences in the office, you can't get a Firewire 800 device
to function at all in a Firewire 400 socket.

This is the only reason I can think of why you can't get an external
Firewire drive to work in your existing Firewire setup as I've had no
problem using different cables and plug converters in the Firewire kit
at home and work.

Have a good New Year you lot!

Re: [wdvltalk] OT: reading an external hard drive - firewire/usb

2006-12-26 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Deb

The key here first of all is listen to Windows's sound effects when you
plug in your external drive. Hot-swappable devices will trigger three
events in Windows (device connect, device disconnect and device error)
that have sounds attached.

Unless you have disabled or changed sounds, when you plug in your
external drive you'll get a two note, low then high sound play to
indicate that a device has been connected. If you don't get this sound
then straight away you know there is no communication at all between the
external drive and Windows.

If you do get this sound then at least you know Windows knows it's
attached. If you hear three of the same notes in quick succession then
you have an error trying to set up and access the drive for use. There I
can't help you because I too have had problems installing and
reinstalling drivers many times over to no avail (for both the device
AND the USB system).

If you don't get this triple note sound then Windows has successfully
accessed the drive and things everything is OK.In this case you'll need
to double-check that the drive is recognisable through Control Panel.

From Control Panel, open up Administrative Tools and double-click
Computer Management. From the console window that pops up, select
Disk Management (under the Storage group) from the Treeview on the
left.

You'll be presented with two panels on the right: a list of all assigned
drive letters in a list in the top panel and a series of colour-coded
bars in the bottom. These bars represent all the drives attached to the
system, regardless of drive letter. If your external drive is working
correctly and can communicate with Windows you will see it here. If it
IS here but NOT associated with a drive letter then you'll have to sort
it manually..

Right-click on the bar that represents your drive and choose Change
Drive Letter and Paths... from the context menu. From here click the
Add... button and assign a letter from the available entries in the
drop down list. You can also change the existing letter by clicking
Change... if there IS a letter already assigned.

If you don't see your drive listed as a coloured bar in Disk Management
then you have a more complex problem.

Hope this is of some use!

Best Wishes and all for this holiday week.

RE: [wdvltalk] What font are they using?

2006-12-12 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Hi Amrit

I don't recognise the font. The reason it's not in the stylesheet is because
they've used an image replacement technique for the text in question,
switching out the relevant parts with a single-frame Flash movie with the
text layer selectable so you can still highlight and copy text.

Rather impressive idea actually.

RE: [wdvltalk] What font are they using?

2006-12-12 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Amrit:

It's not that you must use Flash to display it, they've used Flash to ensure
they can still offer the standard text-related operations a browser provides
(i.e. copy and paste). This is something you can't do with a standard image
replacement.

But if you're only planning on doing this once for a header then it's
probably a little overkill. Certainly I'm going to be looking at this for my
projects as I think it's actually a nice variation on standard image
replacement.

Incidentally while we talk about fonts, does anybody have a copy of Korataki
I can pinch? I'm looking at using it for my 2007 branding update for the
company but I'm not 100% sure it's what I want so obviously I don't want to
shell out for it if I'm not going to use it.

[wdvltalk] 404 error even though the files are there!

2006-12-05 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi List

It seems we're awash with HTTP errors at the moment. I'm have a really
odd thing going on.

Click this link: http://www.themmen.co.uk/demos/rsa/content/flv/rsa-2.flv

Standard message yes? Thing is though the file actually exists.

Now go here: http://www.themmen.co.uk/demos/rsa/content/flv/

That's the standard output generated by IIS when a folder has Directory
Browsing enabled, and thus is displaying the contents of the directory.
Click any of the links however and you'll get a 404 message!

Is this some kind of permissions problem? I've checked everything and it
seems to be OK - other folders in the website work fine and all
permissions seem to be the same.

I'm running IIS 6 on Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server R2 and
this problem has only appeared since running this new server (everything
was fine on IIS 5 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server).

Any ideas peeps?

Re: [wdvltalk] IE7 bad, IE6 good ... but how to get back

2006-11-26 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Three options Joseph:

1: Turn on IE7's full interface to reinstate the old-school menu bars
and such to get it working like IE6 (because even though I hate myself
for saying this, IE7 is actually a lot better and moderately more secure
than IE6) and tell the young lady to live with it (as punishment for
blindly clicking OK buttons ;-) )

2: If IE7 was installed as an update you should be able to remove it
using Add/Remove programs - it's certainly in my list. And I think you
can still download the IE6 installer from the IE site.

3: Install and get her using Firefox 2 - it's functions just like IE6,
and you can even disable tabbed browsing if she hates it.

[wdvltalk] Catch-all mailbox in Exchange 2003

2006-11-09 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi list

I've had a good Google and to be honest it's mostly Greek to me as I'm very
new to Microsoft Exchange (and generally proper client-server networking).

Does anybody know how, or can direct me to a plain English resource to
explain how, I can set up an Exchange mailbox to catch all mail that isn't
directly addressed to our employees? And/or setting up mail boxes that don't
have a specific Windows user associated to them (i.e. webmaster@,
unsubscribe@, etc.). Oh, and these mailboxes have to be shared so all of us
can read them using Outlook 2003.

I've seen a fair few approaches that attach a script to Exchange's mail
received event to sort and process, but although I'm fluent in VBScript I
have no clue what they're doing.

Any pointers will be greatly apreciated as always.

Re: [wdvltalk] iPod question

2006-11-08 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
More than likely not to be honest. I know that anything bought from
iTunes Music Store can be licensed to 5 computers at a time but I don't
think that goes as far as 5 non-family members with a computer each.

I'm also sure that technically ripping a CD into iTunes has grey-area
legality and even if the resulting M4A/MP3/AAC files are legally OK
they're not going to be re-distributable.

But let's be honest, how is anybody going to know? I'd be more concerned
about the iTunes library sync issues with having your iPod linked to his
library, unless you use the hard disk capability (of the top-end models)
to copy files over as files and import them into your own iTunes.

I guess it comes down to your conscience...

[wdvltalk] Web login system - best approach

2006-11-06 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Greetings and salutations

I have a few web projects in the pipeline that will require some form of
user log-in to access restricted content. I've done a few projects before
that have been successful but I'm unsure if my approach is the the best way
of doing things, or if I will be able to actually implement it.

Previously, I have an Access database storing the login information which is
accessed through ASP. This database is stored in a folder outside of the
domain hosting area so you can't physically access it through the website's
URL. The ASP script accesses the file through the server's file system using
Server.MapPath.

This has worked pretty well so far but any projects using this has been
deployed on a server that I have physical access to and administration
control over, so it's easy for me to upload and maintain files directly
through Windows Explorer.

My problem now is twofold: firstly, I don't have this sort of access to the
server and second it's likely that I have to use PHP and MySQL.

I've started playing with MySQL recently for a Flash-fronted CMS project and
I'm fairly comfortable with it for the basic uses I have in mind, but I have
difficulty getting my head around creating a database - it's a bit odd not
having a tangible, MDB-esque file I can just drop into a directory.

So in a nutshell, what's the best way of doing a user/password login using
PHP/MySQL?

TIA

Thanks Drew and Tris

I've googled a number of different approaches prior to posting here - given

2006-10-30 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Thunderbird rocks. Enough said.

It was a touch fiddly to begin with setting up multiple e-mail accounts not
knowing if I wanted a single set of shared folders or sets for each account
but now it's just great!

It's internal junk mail filtering is also quick to train and so much easier
(and reliable) than Anti-virus bolt-ins.

It will even import your existing Outlook Express inboxes which was
brilliant for migration.

Overall run with it and enjoy!

Re: [wdvltalk] Site review

2006-10-27 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Riva

In regards to body text I regularly have the same problems and I explain to
the client that my job isn't just to make the site look pretty, it's to make
the entire user experience a good one, which includes quality-checking the
text content too.

My compromise with them is that I fix spelling and grammatical errors in
what they supply. If any sentence or wording is confusing or could benefit
from restructuring I assemble a checklist of everything with my proposed
version and mail it to them so they can see what I've done and why I've done
it. The client usually runs with my changes then because they've been
informed as to what's going on.

Sometimes I've restructured a sentence thinking it was awkward or confusing
only to find out I've changed what they were trying to say. In that regard
it's also a writing issue on their part so I discuss with them how to
rewrite to retain the message but without it being confusing.

It usually takes a while but I've found it to be more constructive and gets
things done instead of just re-writing content based on my opinions and
writing style, mailing it back only for them to think I'm pedantic and they
re-write it back again.

and my personal favourite: incorrect apostrophe's just like that, especially
when referring to plurals of acronyms.

LDMs, PS2s, PCs not LDM's PS2's and PC's - where is the ownership in that???

So add me to the cynical club lol. My grammar isn't amazing (I still have
some problems with punctuation like the use of semi-colons and the such) but
I never thought apostrophes were all that difficult...

That being said, the people that annoy me aren't the grammatically lazy,
it's the really picky ones who go red-faced on me when they're actually
wrong...I hold no stock in the opinion of people who can't tell the

Re: [wdvltalk] OT: ridding myself of the Windows Welcome screen

2006-10-19 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi Deb

By the sound of it, whatever you've installed recently requires the .NET
Framework to run so it's installed that as well. Looks like with .NET
Framework running, your computer needs an explicit login as exactly the
same thing happened to me when I installed Visual Studio .NET.

Once I uninstalled it, taking the .NET Framework with it, the login
returned to normal.

This of course doesn't fix your problem if something on your system
requires .NET Framwork. I was never able to sort it out myself.

Don't bother with the dedicated server option as Mark's already said - if

I personally would recommend 34sp.com despite the little niggle I had with

As I'm based in the UK I've yet to find anybody that can touch these guys

Re: [wdvltalk] Background Sound on web site

2006-08-02 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Matthew's raised a good point about cross-platform operability of the
background music. As a result, I'd suggest using Flash instead.

Have a 1x1 pixel Flash movie dropped in somewhere on the page that streams
in an external MP3 and export the Flash movie as low a version number as you
can (I think streaming MP3s is about Flash 5) to ensure you don't trigger
too many player updates just for background music.

However I would strongly recommend putting in some form of playback control
to actually turn the music off because unless you do it right and integrate
the music with the overal web experience, background music is RIDICULOUSLY
annoying.

That being said though the really annoying stuff is embedded MIDI files so
at least you'd have a decent file using MP3.

But I do concur to a degree with Matthew's question of why they want
background music anyway. As I mentioned unless you're enhancing the user
experience by integrating music into the visuals I would really try to talk
these people out of background music. It's really annoying and screams I
can use FrontPage so I'm a web designer amateurism.

Re: [wdvltalk] DB question?

2006-07-28 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Riva

You could give your client a text file (or series of text files) to edit and
code the site to generate HTML from these files (if you're picky about
typography you can do some character swapping out as you process the files
to replace curly quotation marks and proper em and en dashes).

Or supply a text entry form in a hidden area of their site for them to type
new content into and store this info in a simple database using that for
content.

Or, I've never used it myself, but give Macromedia Contribute a whirl,
although I have no idea if it's being continued now that Adobe have bought
them out.

lol Joseph nothing exciting

Had a dedicated server with them for 2 years and we purchased a copy of
Windows 2000 Server through them to run on it. Well, as we'd paid for the OS
we felt it was our license, so when we terminated the contract we requested
them to send the discs over.

After claiming THEY owned it (even though we had them confirm before we
started the contract who would own the license), losing records, losing
discs, claiming they had no idea what we were talking about, claiming their
records said we were on RedHat Linux and then (at the barrel of a legal gun)
sent us a badly copied version of Windows 2000 ADVANCED Server they finally
sent us the box with the discs in it.

So it's been fun.

Apart from that 34sp.com are good - the service is reliable, cheap and
feature-rich.

I'd get it in writing/e-mail that you own the license before you purchase

It'd be better to leave the discs with them until you terminate the contract

[wdvltalk] Multi language website

2006-07-10 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi list

I've been asked to quote on a web site which can be viewed in multiple
languages (4 I think) however I can't give them a price if I don't know what
I'm doing! So, I come to your collective brains on how best to achieve this.

This client already has a site based out of Belgium for a product. This
product, however, is not available in UK-controlled markets and therefore
would like to redirect visitors who are in these UK-controlled markets to a
separate site. This site is to be available in (I think) 4 languages.

Now I was thinking brute-force approach having a country select page at the
beginning and redirecting the visitor to the appropriate language on the
appropriate site (fortunately anything controlled by the Belgian site is
none of my responsibility). This would however mean maintaining 4 different
versions of the UK-controlled site for each of the languages available.

Is there a more elegant way of doing this? Determining geographic location
through IP and then auto-redirecting? Single design shell filling in body
text from the appropriate language data file?

Obviously the budget isn't going to be there to do anythign fancy but at
this stage I'd like to explore alternative ways of doing this so I can give
some competitive quotes.

So, ladies and jellyspoons, your advice on how to achieve this please.

TIA

Re: [wdvltalk] Client request!!!!!

2006-07-07 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Riva

If they're insistent on using the photo then why not try the Windows
Vista-style design? I think Microsoft have hired some half-decent designers
as their Vista site is actually really nice visually.

For your project I'm referring specifically to the Vista start page:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ although I prefer one of the earlier
versions with clouds and soft water instead of that meadow-based young lady.

You'll need a high-quality, crisp image to work with to pull this off, but
it's a good start anyway. Furthermore I'd really try and push them into
dropping the image for a common site background or at least restricting it
to a smaller header strip.

In my opinion it'll make their image look a thousand bucks, plus it'll get
the ooh we look like Microsoft, so that MUST mean we're fantastic
mentality going (which is a nice trick to remember to get design-oblivious
or awkward clients happy in a hurry).

(forgot to say this)

I know it's lifted directly from the Windows Vista site, but I think it
manages to work in the photo very well, and in my personal opinion this is
really the only way you're going to be able to work in a solid photo as a
background and still maintain a professional-looking image.

Oh and for all of those of you with Photoshop CS2, the Smart Sharpen filter
is a godsend - that is the same image Riva's used given a few passes on the
filter! Not perfect I know but it has definition and leaves now!

Riva

If I were you I'd politely decline to continue the project on teh grounds
that it is incresing difficult and costly for you to operate with such
internal conflict on what this project is supposed to entail. Their
decision-making process is beyond your scope as a developer and until such
time they can approach you with a fixed and definitive brief then it is
achieveing nothing except waste your time and money, a cost of which,
naturally, you have no choice but to pass on to them.

Furthermore the design choices being made, irrespective of your PROFESSIONAL
advice, will ultimately serve only to destroy any professional image and
credibility this company may have already. As a developer you must deliver
what the client wants. Should that client make choices that will be of a
determent to them, you take pride in your work and have a professional and
personal responsibility to inform them of these facts and provide your
expertise. At the end of the day, if the client knew what they were doing
they wouldn't have hired you.

So put the ball back into their court: either recoup the wasted time and
inform them that you will continue to do so while they in-fight, stand your
ground and let them they're going to make themselves look ridiculous if they
continue down this route, or pull the plug on the grounds of professional
disagreement.

Unless they're willing to keep paying you for the time and energy they're
wasting here, this job and this client are not worth the headaches and
associating yourself with what will end up as a 1998 high school Frontpage
job.

Re: [wdvltalk] Javascript window problem

2006-06-30 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Diane

If your tests fire and run the script directly then you have nothing wrong
with your script. The fault, therefore, will lay with your client's
computer - either they have a pop-up blocker enabled or they have scripting
disabled.

That would be my first port of call to work this out.

Alternatively, you could always rejig things so your code actually runs
inside the new window and resizes it onLoad, then specify a new window as
the target of your link. That was you'll get a pop-up window when you click
the link then the script will resize that new window. If scripting is
disabled you'll still get your pop-up window just not to the correct size.

Can't remember the exact terminology as I'm up to my neck in XML and really
crappy parsers but I think after a domain lapses there is a certain period
(detagged I think) where the domain is shut off from the net but is still
tied to its existing owner allowing them to renew (just in case they forgot
or something). I think this state lasts for a few months.

If the domain is not re-registered by the end of this limbo state then it
comes open for purchase. Only at that stage will your client be able to grab
it.

[wdvltalk] Dynamic image resize in PHP

Hi List

Swamped with other things at the moment so I don't have a lot of Google-ing

In a nutshell, can I use PHP to create a resized/cropped copy of an existing

site (this client is seriously computer-illiterate so I'd rather not
complicate things for him having to upload pairs of images).

[wdvltalk] SMTP Server configuration on IIS 5

2006-01-13 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Hi list - calling all IIS experts!

I'm learning as I go with server configuration so bear with me while I
stumble through my explanations and problems.

I'm having a bit of a pickle configuring my SMTP server to do what I want it
to do. My SMTP server must serve 2 roles:

. to receive e-mail from anybody sending mail to our addresses
. to act as a mail relay for a specific authorised login, irrespective of
its location or computer (it's from a CD-ROM project we're going to be
distributing soon)

I can get either one of these functions working but I cannot configure the
server to achieve both at once.

To receive e-mails from anybody, I allow anonymous access (set under Access
Control in the Access tab) from all connections (all except the list below
with an empty list, set under Connection Control in the Access tab). This,
to my limited understanding, allows any mail server to connect to mine and
transfer data. This works fine.

To act as a relay I allow access through the Windows security package *only*
(set under Access Control in the Access tab) and blanket-block all locations
(only the list below with an empty list), but allow all successfully
authenticating computers to relay (set under Relay Restrictions in the
Access tab). This also works fine.

The problem I now have is doing one of these things messes around the other.

Originally I used both anonymous access and Windows authentication, with all
successfully authenticated computers allowed to relay, but I realised
quickly that opened a huge security hole as an anonymous login would count
as a successful authentication. 35 seconds later I was used as a relay for
17,000 spam e-mails.

I then turned off anonymous access and although the relay still worked fine
using the authenticated user account from any connection, every other e-mail
sent to our addresses bounced sender was rejected: client was not
authenticated.

I've gone through all the settings in the configuration and I cannot see
what combination of settings will do what I want. As I want to receive
e-mail from any computer I can't set an authorised or blocked computer list
as this list will change all the time, however I can't seem to restrict
relaying to a specific user account but allow connections from anywhere.

So, in a nutshell, sombody save me and tell me what to do!

Clear as mud? Thought so

Re: [wdvltalk] Computer problem update

2006-01-11 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

It turns out that the computer that they purchased is not compatible

with the SBC DSL that they use. Is there some way to fix this?

There sure is...tell Dell to stop lying and make good on the support options
they're supposed to offer. DSL is in no way reliant on knowing anything
about your computer set up all you need is a working modem to talk to the
service and you're fine.

Now having the computer compatible with the modem is a different matter...

Re: [wdvltalk] New computer problem

2006-01-10 Thread Ross Clutterbuck

Any ideas on how to fix this or on what she should do?

Basic advice Riva is tell her not to buy a Dell!

Not sure what the custom PC market is like outside of the UK but over here
you can buy good quality machines without paying the premiums you do for
branded PCs and support from manufacturers who, in my experience, mess you
about with so much junk and unnecessary pre-installed apps you literally
have to strip them bare to get them to work.

So I'd return the machine for a full refund as non-functional and go to my
local friendly PC supplier and get one from there.

Oh, and Will, *cough* overpriced *cough* at least Windows gives vaguely
helpful error messages *cough*

Although my new Mantra is a happy visual place - Mac the Planet!

Hi

So, does anyone on the list know of software that can do

There's a lot of things out there that can do what you want, but how many of
them are going to be useful? Adobe After Effects can export as Flash and has
some fantastic 3D tools to give this thing some depth, but After Effects is
probably overkil on this (unless you download the 30-day trial version for
this one-off project). Also you could try looking at Swift 3D which is great
for 3D Flash work.

What exactly does your client mean by adding some depth? Depth via
perspective? Drop shadows? Embossing?

Re: [wdvltalk] Accessing another pc desktop

2005-05-11 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Amrit:
There's a wealth of information inside the Windows XP Help Centre telling
you how to do it - I would strongly recommend reading through it first.

However, in a nutshell you will need Windows Messenger running and logged in
on both machines (NOT MSN Messenger - it's supposed to work fine but I've
never been able to do it). Note that you will need 2 different Passport IDs
to do this so each machine is logged in under a different ID, and also add
each ID to the other's Buddy list. You would then send a Remote Assistance
request from the machine you want to control to the other Passport ID logged
in on the other machine. Simply accept the request and let it run.

You will need to check that you can send and receive Remote Assistance
requests on both machines: go into the System Properties in Control Panel
and have a look at the Remote Assistance tab.

Yes I know it does, but none of those results help me much.
Don't want to sound ungrateful, but do you think I'd post wildly OT if my
Google searches (of which I've already read most of the result returned by
those two queries) returned anything useful?

IMO offering a Google search as advice isn't particularly helpful, and kinda
feels like use Google instead of bothering us with your OT shenanigans to
me.

Or did I just wake up on the wrong side of the bed this year?

[wdvltalk] Seriously OT: changing iMac cases

2005-04-24 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Dear all
Forgive the wildly OT post here but you're all a multi-talented bunch so I
thought I'd pick your brains while I'm Google-less on this topic.

I've got my hands on an old iMac DV+ in Ruby that I'm using for some
cross-platform development. However, being the arty type I'm not too keen on
my iMac being red when my P4 system and room decor as a blue theme going on.
Now I can obtain a broken down Indigo iMac DV+ on eBay for near-pennies and
I thought why not just get this broken Indigo model and switch the case
over?.

Now although I'm an experience hardware engineer and used to stripping
things liek this down, I thought I'd ask around first to see if it's
feasible and any pitfalls I may encounter before I start stripping down a
perfectly functioning iMac.

Does anybody know of any things like permanent fixings or specific moldings
I may encounter which would prevent me getting the cases off?

TIA

You 150% sure you've got your Windows Volume control turned all the way up?
You want your Wave output set to maximum. It's likely you're getting your
CDs playing fine because you've got your CD-ROM linked to your sound card
direct via a cable (don't need them any more because Windows XP reads CDs
digitally now and send the info through software).

Other than that not sure but I'll have a think

RE: [wdvltalk] breadcrumb problem

2005-04-09 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Linda:

I did stumble upon a Javascript that read query
strings in URLs with no back-end processing, but I
don't have access to my work machine at the moment.

If I can dig it out then in theory you could pass
query strings (like newpage.html?prevpage=index) and
then read it off so you can trace where the user was
previously, but it could get a bit messy and
complicated.

Alternatively, could you try reading the History
object in JS and work it out from there?

Re: [wdvltalk] breadcrumb problem

2005-04-05 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Linda:
With CD distribution you do have the luxury of allowing a certain bloat to
your code as you don't have to worry about download times etc. so in that
regard you might as well just hard code your breadcrumbs. This of course
does make updating a nightmare especially if your CD-based site is going to
be large.

Alternatively you could try a client-side Javascript approach. I'm just
brainstorming here so don't take this as the best way of doing it, but you
could have an external data source storing your tree data (a series of
Javascript arrays held in a common external JS file) and generate HTML with
document.write() for the relevant path for a specific page based on
parameters you give it.

That way you can have breadcrumb changes reflect across the site by editing
a single file/set of files as you would do with moretraditional back-end
approaches.

Food for thought?

Sounds like the File Allocation Table might have gone the way of the Dodo
but for the life of me I can't remember if it's possible to rebuild a FAT
without killing the data.

One thing I would suggest is try booting into pure DOS and see if you can
read off the disk. I have a utility here called NTFSDOS which allows the
reading of NTFS drives within DOS. I can e-mail it to you off list if you
wish and see if you have any joy accessing the drive.

I'll have a looksie around and let you know if I can think of anything.

Re: [wdvltalk] Serious hard drive problem

2005-03-31 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Diane Cheryl
This doesn't sound to me like a Master Boot Record failure as the drive
cannot be read when slaved under a different OS. But Diane if you want to
try it, from a pure DOS command line try fdisk /mbr on the drive in question
to rebuild the Master Boot Record without damaging the rest of the drive.
Whether this works for NTFS I can't say sorry :(

Or maybe try the administration tools under NT4/2000/XP and see if they
help.

Re: [wdvltalk] Text from an image

2005-03-29 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Without sounding completely dumb (i.e. I've not had time to read up on it
yet) I would assume there's a reason these CAPTCHA test images are distorted
instead of being plainly clear? Bots can read text inside images now can
they? Little buggers...

I suppose spambots are a lot like internet porn always: always pushing the
boundaries of internet technology to better enable their nefarious
activities...

I personally can't stand those CAPTCHA thingies - as many have pointed out
so far I find them nigh-on impossible to read a lot of the time - so some
kind of text-based question would be a much better alternative and
accessible too.

Anybody got any good references I can have a jolly good read? So far I've
not been hit with loads of spam by having exposed mailto links and feedback
forms (despite my advice the boss feels that forms and such will put off
visitors to our site - a simple one-click approach is much more favourable)
but it's something I'm pushing hard to implement.

Re: [wdvltalk] [wdvltalk]

2005-03-21 Thread Ross Clutterbuck
Dominique:
I personally have a lib folder in which I have multiple subfolders for
each library item I use: CSS, images, Javascript etc. That way it's all
bundled together neatly.

I do however sometimes have subfolders for these things for each area of a
site for media specific only to that area. For example, the site I'm
finishing off now (launching in a few days peeps - thanks for all the
input!) has a lib folder for all the common CSS, images and external code
but each eZine article and portfolio item has it's own subfolder containing
the images and media clips specific to that item.

If you're handing over maintenance of this site to somebody less experienced
I think it would probably be best to just have one folder for each media
you're using as you originally stated. That way it avoids confusion as all
your images are in here *direct point to folder*.
