It's there in the Drums section -- Bongo Drums.  It shows up if you 
select "Common" or "All" or "World" in the left-hand column and then 
select "Drums" in the middle column.

At least that's what happens on Fin25/Windows.

Did you do a screen redraw? When I have been moving around the screen size 
and/or going back and forth between page sizes in the linked parts, etc. I have 
encountered this and just did the redraw which eliminated the ghost notes.

Hi from Oregon!
The score manager is activated with a command K for the mac and for each staff 
line you are able to mute each one or solo each one separately. In Windows it 
might be Cntrl K?
I still haven't figured how to mute or solo all of them at once. I think they 
were able in earlier versions. They only seem to be mutable or soloable one by 
one!

Not sure about this on the Mac side, but after working in 2014b for a
few hours, I find that there are still scrolling anomalies (clicking in
the scroll bar jumps more than one window - often to the beginning or
end of the document, and SmartScroll - a useful app that works well in
2012 is buggy in 2014).  Also, redraw problems remain - if a rehearsal
letter is displaced and you restore it to default position, it doesn't
redraw until you force a redraw.

Still buggy and annoying.

Somewhat pissed off.

I have worked the percussion tutorial several times over a period of several 
years. I have also used the 3rd edition of the easy guide to music notation 
from the berklee press. I have been successful a few times. Also, there is a 
plethora of outstanding tutorials on various latin percussion instruments by 
all kinds of incredibly talented percussionists scattered all over the internet 
with lots of information and tips. I have had to resort to all of this, as well 
as what the online finale manual has to offer in a desperate attempt to learn 
how to use this aspect of finale and some success!!

I hope this helps! It can be done, I know, I am sure? Good luck and have 
patience with yourself as well as with everything finale!

I purchased the Berklee Press 3rd edition of their book Finale, an easy guide 
to music notation, and went through each chapter from the beginning of the book 
to the end and found many sections illustrating the many ways of using the 
score manager in real situations. I use this manual as a reference work for the 
many parts of Finale.

Take a look at it in a book store and see if it might help.

I learned a lot and am grateful for them making it available to the rest of us. 
I began with Finale 3.2 and found this to be the next best book beside the 
regular manuals. I also find the online help to be very useful.

also find someone there who will be willing to talk you through this.

The last-ditch option is to have two files, one for playback and one for 
printout.  You could work almost exclusively in the playback file until you are 
ready to print, and then go back and fix the percussion so it looks good.  I 
have done this also.

Hope you are well.  I saw your name pop up in a summary of the Met commissions 
so far. I was sorry to see that they aren't going further with your project (at 
least that's what the article seemed to suggest), but I'm guessing you must 
have other folks lined up, either committed or soon to be?

Craig,

If you engage the articulation tool you can right click on the selection box 
over the note and call up the edit articulation definition dialogue where you 
find the various parameters to edit: Symbols, Symbol Options, Playback Effect, 
Positioning, etc.  The playback effect is where you can experiment with various 
effects. I've tried using these things and find my patience is kind of tested. 
I am not very patient! Ha!

In the score manager each instrument has a triangle to the left in Fin2011 and 
in Fin2012 under the name column which you click. There you find the separate 
layers, chords, and expression playbeci that can be turned off and on.

I am looking at Fin2011 and Fin 2012.

editing each separate chord and deselecting the playback, but that is 
just too tedious.

The help file says there is a way to do this in ScoreManager, but I sure 
don't see it.  Am I missing something?

Actually, I did remember already, because shortly after having them clear
my authorizations and authorizing Finale, my fresh install of Win8 went all

2. view menu; grid/guide; check, show guides
 
3. view menu; show; rulers

4. with cursor in rule, double click and the blue line with a heart shaped 
arrow head, will appear on the page under all tools, including page layout.

make the connection.

Just a report back after my discussion with MM support about the centre 
alignment guides that disappear when the Page Layout Tool is selected...

First response to my message and screen shots was:

 Thanks for contacting us and I can certainly help. I would not expect the 
 guides to change at all when you click the Page Layout Tool. Do they by 
 chance reappear when you press Command + R to show rulers. Also, just so I 
 know what I am looking at as I cannot see your entire screen in the attached 
 files, did you change the guide color from it's default light blue? 
 
 What surprises me about these shots is that the page and system margins are 
 showing when you are in the Selection Tool which I would expect even less.
 
 With that aside just for now, here's how I would align the staves: 
 1. Page Layout Tool
 2. From the menubar at the top of your screen select Page Layout  Systems  
 Edit Margins
 
 A default document with an 8.5 x 11 page size has left and right margins of 
 .5 inches (on each side) - Therefore the inside width of the document is 7.5 
 inches - divide this by 2 and this is the size that the right side of each 
 system margin should be set to 3.5 inches.

I responded with more screen shots to clarify and the response was:

 When you have View  Show  Margins checked all margins show with the 
 Selection Tool active. (your screenshot 3)
 When Page Layout Tool is active the middle vertical and middle horizontal 
 margins disappear - this is what I would expect (as inconvenient as it is in 
 this case, it is normal behavior).
 
 When Guides (light blue lines) are assigned with the Selection Tool active, 
 they are still visible when switching to the Page Layout Tool (and vice 
 versa) - This is where we're getting different behavior. 

The advice continued trash the preferences (Gee, I didn't see that 
coming!?!) which I dutifully did to no change and the annoyance that I had to 
set them up again...

Fact is, these lines are available in EVERY tool except Page Layout. (With my 
limited knowledge of programming, that suggests to me there is a box in the OO 
programming environment that needs to be ticked!) 

Why are these lines so important to me?

I frequently create worksheets for my students where i have musical examples 
on one side of the page and space for text or answers on the other. When these 
guides were available in Page Layout, all one had to do was select the system 
handles (left or right) and drag them to the centre guide. Done and dusted.

As a workaround I have modified the default file so that a pale blue version 
of the lines is present in every new document. Trouble is, now you can't turn 
it off by de-selecting Show Margins. You have to turn the rulers on and delete 
the blue guides.

What was once a an easy one-step process is now a pain in the arse!

just tried it, no probs.  hav a look here, this is what you mean, 
yeah?  i normally have the grid off, turned it on to try.  also 
tried with solid gridlines, no probs here.

try it with a new file with no libraries, maybe there is something 
glitchy happening in the setup process?

i am not sure i follow you here, but maybe try removing the 
guidelines in your default, save, close, reopen, set guidelines, save 
and close.  then try the process again.

I was able to create a vertical line using the grid and rulers as you suggest, 
Jef, so that solves my problem. However, the process is more complicated than 
it use to be requiring me to turn the grid and rulers on, click and drag to 
create and align the guide I want, turn off rulers and grid since I don't want 
the grid there when I'm entering notes. 

Previously I simply turned the margins on and a  vertical central and 
horizontal guide appeared. That still happens but they are the lines that 
disappear when I choose the Page Layout Tool to grab staves and re-shape them. 

I think the old behaviour was better.

I will ask MM if they can reinstate it.

not sure what you mean by centre guide line but i haven't ever come 
across disappearing guidelines (macfin 2012).  not sure why this 
would have any effect, but michael mentioned seeing similar 
behaviour, are you both using default templates from finale?  i built 
my own template long ago, and completely built it from the ground up 
when i migrated to F2012.

chromatic transposition breaks forced appearance 
of some accidentals, especially if you compare 
concert and transposed versions, as you are

i also noticed this using the single pitch PI. 
but never figured out what the conditions were 
that made it happen.

For the first, just don't use the 9 key to flip 
enharmonics, because when you look away, it may 
flip itself back.

here you are talking about the SC, right? because 
in the PT this is the only way to correct some 
spellings (i have many instances of E-3/4# for 
example)

Also, if you select Favour Sharps or Favour 
Flats in the Enharmonic menu, this method is 
largely bulletproof

mm, where the hell is this option these days? 
i seem to recall setting it to one of those way 
back when, but canèt find the bugger now.

For the second, there is no way that I know of 
to avoid this, other that using expressions 
(ugh!) or articulations to force the appearance.

ok, thanks for confirming that this is just 
another example of stupid finale design.

According to tech support, you are supposed to 
enter the notes you want in transposed pitch; 
anything you do here will stick. If you enter 
the notes in CONCERT pitch and then switch to 
transposed (when chromatic transposition is 
enacted) you don't know what you're going to get.

brilliant.

  In linked voiced parts this is particularly 
egregious, because you have no way to make a 
voiced part different in the part or score. 
Sometimes just entering or exiting the Speedy 
window causes the state of forced accidentals to 
flip their appearance.

yes i have noticed this even without voiced parts.

I have complained vociferously about both of 
these bugs, to no avail. Maybe a well-respected 
engraver such as yourself complaining would help 
get these fixed?

sure.  and i am going to make this next deadline, too.

Darcy, they claim that expressions in 2012c now chase correctly if you start 
playback from the middle of the piece. Have you tested that to see if it fixed 
now or not? My simple tests all worked, but maybe you spank it harder than I

Patrick,

Your lackadaisical attitude towards cautionary accidentals will lead to many 
misinterpretations of your music. 

I find that the cautionary accidentals leave little to speculation as to 
whether a note continues to be a flat , natural, or sharp and eliminates major 
confusion for the interpreter. I have found a major offender in the published 
music of Hal Leonard. There are many areas in their music where no clear 
solution is evident including a reading of the vertical instance. I believe 
that the non-use of cautionary accidentals will leave a lot of musical texts 
unreadable in the future.

The notational reading and realization of early music is an excellent example 
of trying for years to decide which of the interpretations of a squiggle is 
correct. Is this not true in this case?

Cautionary accidentals are necessary to avoid any confusion about the pitch of 
a note, thank you very much! Don't be lazy!

the last hundred years wherein the particular notation conventions that are in 
play are displayed on separate first pages of the published music that leave

Those who value considerate and clear communication with musicians.

Those who pay for rehearsal time.

respect for the expectations of the recipients of musical notation is part of 
the equation and it's not an academic issue, it's a practical one.

BUT I have a client who insists on putting stage directions in the 
rehearsal score... sometimes quite lengthy... two or three long 
sentences (and many shorter ones.)  I can only use the text blocks. 
And they MUST be attached to the measures...

sounds like text expressions to me.  they will remain properly 
positioned even after layout changes.  i have had inconsistencies in 
placement with text tool blocks.

very long and multiple-line text strings are also possible in 
expressions, add line breaks where you need them.  here only the page 
number and score system dividers are text blocks (page-attached, 
obviously):

the only advantage i see in text blocks is the ability to define them 
to have centred and justified alignment... which the expression tool

I had some experience with this when I assisted Bruce Eisenbeil, an outstanding 
guitarist from the list. The dialogue for this has been transferred from the 
edit staff menu to the scoremanager window on the instrument list page. In the 
lower right section of the window is a drop down menu for various staff layout 
options wherein you are able to increase or decrease the distances between 
various staff layouts as well as add or subtract lines.

This might help you solve the problem.

I never really have worked with tabulature, even if I have been presented for 
the principles many years ago.

Having taken up the very small UBass (ukulele bass playing in the correct 
contrabass octave) I saw potentials for chord playing beyond those of the long 
frets on other basses. I wrote some two-part settings and some that used up to 
4 notes simultaneously. This was done in standard contrabass notation, which I 
then learned that some bass players don’t read.

Somehow I found out to create a 4-line bass tablature. Also found out to edit 
string/fret #.

But if the numbers on adjacent string shall not overlap (which makes reading 
very tough), then the font shall be so small that reading also gets 
problematic alone from the size. I would like a bigger distance between the 4 
tab lines, but I cannot find out how to do that. I haven’t seen it among the 
other tab options.

I tried to attach to the frame attributes and wound up with a problem I had to 
solve the other way. I probably missed something?

I usually have to use the expressions and add them to the parts after breaking 
the link to the score for that particular expression. I just had to go through 
this process for a brass trio by Alan Pierce and this seemed to be the easiest 
solution for me at the time.

Titles are Page attached. You need to make sure you measure attach the Titles 
via the frame attributes window in the Text Edit menu.  From there you should 
only have to do minor adjustments if any for the title for each movement.

Actually, it helped a LOT, and (knock on wood) kernel_task is behaving today. 
I am going with the built-in monitor only, for now.

I believe there is still something a bit wonky about how Finale 2012b handles 
files with 30+ staves, but at least now the problem isn't being compounded by 
kernel_task spikes.

I haven't noticed slow downs too much so far. My scores have been for small 
ensembles recently.

I also moved up to OS X 10.8 when it came out and haven't observed any other 
major problems.

I'm wondering if DiskWarrior is supposed to help with slow downs and so forth?

I have tried it on general principles once in a while and it seems to help 
sometimes.

I also use David Pogues early MAC OS X suggestion to 
restart, hold down command s until it boots into the shell, and then at the 
command line run fsck (hyphen)-fy and hit return.

Then type reboot and hit return/enter.

while I know that can sometimes cause some sluggishness, I'm now getting 
ridiculous, productivity-killing slowdowns, even on a fairly new and powerful 
Mac -- the 2011 MacBook Pro Core i7 (quad-core 2.2 GHz) with 8 GB RAM. 

Even without loading Garritan instruments, a look at Activity Monitor shows 
kernel_task going completely nuts, sucking up 380% of CPU in an idle state 
(Finale itself takes about 35% CPU). This means *extremely* poor performance 
doing basic tasks -- scrolling around the score, adding expressions, etc. 

This behavior is definitely new to Fin2012 -- possibly new to Fin2012b, though 
I haven't done much orchestral work in Fin2012 vanilla so I'm not sure.

Is anyone else seeing this? (Jef, I think you mentioned something along these 
lines?) 

Time Capsule is off, Spotlight is off, nothing else is running, and still, 
Finale causes the entire system to drag to a halt. Even a ProTools session 
with 60+ audio tracks doesn't cause my MacBook Pro to choke this bad. 
Something seriously screwy is going on, and it's completely killing my 
productivity.

i had probs of sluggishness recently that were completely resolved by 
quitting linotype fontexplorer while using finale (had no effect on 
font functionality)

support have confirmed an incompatibility between finale and font 
management programmes.  they didn't give me a list but confirmed 
linotype was incompatible.  the sluggishness occurred randomly and 
could only be resolved by quitting finale and/or system.  since 
quitting linotype when using finale i have not again encountered this 
particular sluggishness.

It usually works for me to enter Opt./= on the first note of the second 
ending.  That is supposed to put a backwards half tie on the note and usually 
does.

There have been times (perhaps with older updated files) where that doesn't 
work, and I have to use a hand slur adjusted to resemble the ties.

I have an iMac from 2007 with 4 gigs memory
I set up a file with no libraries and the insert text process worked as you 
described in your original email.


open new doc from default; or create new doc with no libraries and 
create a text block with Part/Score Name insert

I can make the text disappear within the file or edit text dialogue box.
Is it because there are no libraries?

so it seems to only behave this way when the text block ONLY contains 
the Part/Score Name insert (it doesn't happen with other inserts) and 
with no extra characters in the text block with the insert.

I have recently been working with score manager as well, and have successfully 
added parts in this manner to a score that is already formatted. It helps to 
work with a copy of the file until you determine how well it is going to work.

(I am working on an 24 iMac with the most recent version of Lion and Fin2012a)

I, too, have had a confusing time with the major and minor transpositions, etc. 
until I encountered an instructor whose rule of thumb is to ignore the minor 
key signatures and work with the major as though they are simply numbers of 
sharps or numbers of flats which seems to avoid the awkwardness of major or 
minor.

They have a really awkward feature that I wish would be fixed - - -

When you request a key signature, it makes a distinction between a
major key and a minor key with the exact same pattern of sharps and
flats. For example, they call C minor a DIFFERENT key signature than E
flat major.

Why even give it a name? There should be only 15 choices 1-7 sharps,
1-7 flats or NONE. Instead they make you do about 30 choices. you have
the 12 keys, but there are TWO name for 3 of them.

This creates a lot of confusion. Whether you transpose the notes or not
should be a option which is checked or unchecked. Instead they call it
other. There are lots of situations where you want to change the key
signature, but keep the note pitches the same.

This could be put on a greatly simplified menu. For example:
1) no of sharps or flats, and
2) what kind it is: sharp or flat, or non-standard.
3) three check boxes: No tranpose, enharmonic, or diatonic.

By non-standard I mean a melodic minor for example.

I too would be very sorry to see the end of either this forum or Finale

This takes you to Applications.
    Enable all applications and check always open with
    Select finale 2011 from list.

Save file to wherever you want it.

If you have Finale 2012, would you mind checking this for me?

Please go to the Font Annotation files for EngraverFontSet character 45
(tenuto). (Program Options  Edit  click Font Annotation in bottom right 
set font to EngraverFontSet  select character 45.)

Is the articulation outside the red boundary box? (According to the help
files, the articulation should be inside the red boundary box.)

Here's my situation, I used this character in Fin2010. The articulation
appeared correctly when placed inside slurs. In December, I installed 2012.
Now when I open up a file in Fin2010, the slurs have changed shape. I'm
curious if the annotation files that 2012 installed may have redefined
things and thus are affecting all versions of Finale.

If it's not a bug (a result of poorly defined annotation files), then I
can't imagine how this happened on my system, as I've not adjusted any
annotation files in several years.

 playing, not the MIDI out pitch I had mapped. So I could be entering
 snare and toms but hearing whistles and guiros during input; it was  
 only
 on playback that the map was applied and I got the right sounds. Now I
 hear the correct sounds during input. Another plus.

 The drawback -- and I think it's a pretty big one -- is that there  
 is a
 bug related to my form of Speedy. In the piece I'm working on now,  
 I've
 got 5 percussion instruments displaying on the 5 staff lines, so the
 input pitches I hit to get them are E4, G4, B4, D5, and F5. If I'm
 moving among adjacent lines, there's no problem. But if I've just
 entered a note on the top line and my next note is on the bottom line,
 hitting E4 only moves me down one line at a time -- I have to hit the
 key 4 times before I'm finally on the right line. In other words,
 entering a pitch higher or lower than my current location acts as  
 though
 I've pressed the up or down arrow key, although the cursor will
 eventually come to rest on the desired staff location.

 There are some more nuances to this bug, and I'll take it up with  
 support.

 4—choose NEW and give it a title, like myMidiMaps or anything
 5—now you need to give the map you're creating a name  
 (easyOrchestral, for example)

 Now:
 6—click on SELECT A NOTE TYPE TO ADD...
 7—choose your instrument label, let's say SNARE DRUM
 8—now press the ADD NOTE TYPE button (an unnecessary step in my  
 opinion)

 Once this is placed in the box, you now need to assign what note  
 on your keyboard this is getting assigned to. Start pushing keys  
 on your MIDI keyboard/controller until you come to the sound  
 you're wanting to use. You should've noticed that under the MIDI  
 NOTE column, the number was changing. This is the specific MIDI  
 note that you're going to trigger with this label.

 Repeat steps 6—8 for your other sounds. Be sure to pay attention  
 to what you're labeling them (what's going into the NOTE TYPE  
 column. You'll need to use this later.

 When you get all your sounds assigned a label, corresponding to a  
 MIDI NOTE, press OK.

 Now:
 9—click on the STAFF TOOL
 10—click on the staff you're
