Re: [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: hospital madness
Hi Tom No, in this game idea, the hospital needs to do tests on the patient such as blood tests and x-rays. So its tests on a living patient, not on a dead body. So, if the game existed, the objective would be to escape from the hospital staff. -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: 07 March 2011 04:24 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: hospital madness Hi, Ok? Interesting idea. What exactly happens if you hang out in the morg? Perhaps a few dead bodies come to life and takes up the chase. Perhaps the doctors have been experimenting with the undead? Cheers! Your parents had to put you on the train as the hospital is 1000 km from home and you need to go for all kinds of tests. This game's objection is to escape out of the 12 floor hospital before a nurse or sister can grab you and put you back in the bed where the tests aught to be done. The game gives you 3 lives, although you are not actually killed but just captured for tests. Each time you are captured you will hear some of the tests being done on you and then lose a life or chance in the game. this game will immerse you into a world of fast movement and suspense. You use 3d game movement to run around the hospital building, exploring branching passages. While running up and down staircases, you will sometimes hear your character giving a panic gelp. If you do not press the enter key in time, your character will slip and fall on the stairs, giving the hospital personnel time to catch up. Hint: on the underground floors they won't get you easily as this is where all the admin staff works and they are not aware of your whereabouts. You don't need a shaft to get to the underground floors. You just take the stairs from a floor above the ground to an underground floor .Occasionally you will find quiet offices to hide in on the floors above the ground. But you only have a little amount of time to hide before the personnel decides to visit the office you're hiding in. You have to find an exit, but there's 4 of them! They're not on the ground floor. The other 3 will just lead you into a small garden where the hospital personnel will easily find you. Don't think that you can actually use this as a hiding place! There is only 1 exit that will let you escape. Listen for a very soft sound clip of somebody reporting news on tv. If you reach this exit, an alarm goes off letting the personnel know you are about to escape. The other exits also have soft sound clips of people doing tv shows, but you have to carefully listen for the exit with the news reporting clip. Once you take the exit, you must run until you encounter a tv. The tv will make that static electricity sound like when a tv is turned off or on. Once you are 1 feet away from the tv, you will teleport back to home. Now your parents must again make arrangements to put you on the train to go to the hospital. They're not happy about you escaping! Make life hard for them next time by playing this game again. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] problem installing all in play software under windows 7.
Alex and others, Despite Freedom Scientific's claims, JAWS appears not to fully support 64-bit Windows, either Windows 7 or Vista. Our company encountered this in 2010 specific to programs written in Java, but I suspect the problem is wider. We did extensive research on this when JAWS stopped speaking our games when running under 64-bit Windows 7. FS tech support told us in March of 2010, The issue currently is the accessibility bridge not loading as it should in the Windows 64 bit environment. John Oliviera, a colleague who runs the Mass. Council for the Blind, told me: FS is well aware of the problem but they only do what they can. They would like major companies to pay them to solve the specific problems but most have refused to pay because it can be costly. Another colleague said that he'd notified FS of this problem in June of 2009 re 64-bit Vista. The general problem seems to be JAWS not looking in the 64-bit systems directory for stuff it needs. The symptom can be either JAWS speaking just the Windows title bars and keystrokes, or being totally silent. BTW. Our tests showed that NVDA works just fine on 64-bit Windows. Again, I suspect their bug affects more than just Java. However, there's a bigger implication than just for games. Say you rely on a software tool for your job. And you rely on JAWS. Then I.T. comes in and upgrades you to 64-bit Windows 7. You can't do your job. In any event, for our own stuff we're relying on SAPI voices and just using what remains of JAWS as a nice-to-have. I personally think that FS is shooting themselves in the foot. Based on the evidence, and my 30+ years of software engineering experience, this does not look like a tough problem to fix. [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: alarm madness
Plot and objective: You are residing in an apartment building of a boarding institute in Connecticut, USA. You suffer several disabilities, making it necessary to be looked after. So in this boarding institution's building, you get your meals, your laundry is done and you have a nice big spacious living space inside the big building. Your favorite pastime is to dance on your own on the beat of ballroom music. You've got your favorite ballroom music playing: swing waltzes, vianese waltzes, quicksteps and foxtrots. You enjoy dancing for an hour or so after which you head down to the public community room to listen to the tv. For a while, all goes well, you enjoy listening to the show on tv. But then some of the people in the community room starts ridiculing you for dancing on your own, because they saw you through the windows of the community room. At first, you break down in terrible sobbs while you try to listen to the show on tv. But then, you decide that you have to revenge. So you head down to the doors of the living spaces of other boarders. You step onto your portal sci fi transport pad and teleport into each boarder's living space of those boarders who ridiculed you, who are in the community room. Armed with your advanced sci fi machine, you tamper with the alarm of the boarder until it makes a much louder sound than usual. You hear the boarder coming along to find out what's the racket about. You quickly step onto your transport pad, teleporting into the next guilty boarder's living space, tampering with his alarm. You do this with all the boarder's alarms who offended you. At first when the boarding institute's staff learned of this, they want to expel you from the boarding institute. But then when they learned of the whole story, they took away some privileges from the offending boarders and that was the last of them ridiculing you! [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: descending into madness with a cake on your head
Plot and objection: You're residing in the US state Arkansas. You suffer from a mental disability. You bought yourself a delicious 3 layor chocolate cake with thick icing. You were considering to eat the cake that morning, but you decided to pay a visit to the streets, just wandering the streets of Arkansas. So you always put on your nice hat when going to the streets but this time you did not realize what you are doing and you put that huge cake on top of your head; thinking its your hat. So you go into the streets. All the people laughs a lot about you having this cake on your head. While you are walking using 3d game movement similar to shades of doom, you occasionally need to balance that cake by pressing enter followed by either the left or right bracket keys on your keyboard, depending to which side the cake sways .The laughing and ridiculing gets worse and suddenly you run to a cement bench and place yourself on it in a sitting position, put the cake next to you and burst out in terrible crying. But the laughing and ridicule just gets worse. You think that nobody is going to help you when, suddenly, a fire breathing dragon teleports from the planet malmac to where you're sitting. IN a rough but concerned voice he asks you what the matter is ? You explains your situation to him and he offers to give you a ride on his back. You put the cake back in its box and load it on the dragon. You get on the dragon's back and off you go, scaring the living wax out of the ridiculers. The dragon breathes large clouds of smoke to scare off the ridiculers .You have to steer the dragon in the right direction with left or right arrows so that you don't collide into walls or lamp poles while on the dragon's back. Eventually some of the ridiculers stampers to you and apologize and give you a bread and some fruit. You get off the dragon's back, give him some fruit to thank him and go home. The dragon teleports back to malmac with a smile on his rough skin face. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Seamlessly upgrading DirectX
Hi, Yes and no. It is true that OpenAL doesn't come with a stereo pan control, but I've read a few articles on how to essentually create your own pan control provided you are wrapping OpenAL directly. Which I wasn't doing around beta 14/beta 15. When I was working on betas 14/15 I thought I would try my hand at using an open source piece of middleware called SFML highly recommended by a lister. As it turns out SFML is buggy on Windows XP, and the audio API for SFML doesn't expose the complete OpenAL API. That meant I had no way to extend OpenAL and add a pan control because it wasn't accessing it directly. The way to get around that problem is to write your own middleware like Streemway which wraps OpenAL and you can add a custom pan control and any custom DSP effects you want. OpenAL is a fairly decent audio library all things considered and I think in time with some development and experimentation I can produce something equal to XAudio2 and Streemway once I have a chanse to write my own middleware API. In the mean time I'm still using SFML 1.6 for the Linux versions of my games and the panning isn't too bad using the 3d audio control. It just takes a bit of math to try and make it pan cleanly. However, where it really shines is 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound. Which is mainly what I need anyway for my FPS games. HTH On 3/6/11, Philip Bennefall phi...@blastbay.com wrote: Hi Thomas, Also, with OpenAl wouldn't you be suffering from the inferior panning control? Or rather, the lack of one. Granted XAudio2 doesn't have one either, but as we've discussed it is perfectly possible to build one that works exactly as in DirectSound which is what Streemway implements. You still get all the 3d features, of course, as well as the ability to both use the provided effects and insert your own dsp code. Streemway exposes these features, and so will BGT. You step onto the transport pad by selecting it from your inventory with the tab key, which is among a lot of unnecessary items such as tissues and thumb drive protecting lids presenting a challenge to quickly find the transport pad You tamper with the alarms by completing several tasks the game will randomly give you such as arranging letters or numbers from big to small, or by putting the various day-today sounds you will hear in categories by pressing enter on a sound to hear it; move to the correct category with tab and then hit enter to drag that sound there. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] problem installing all in play software under windows 7.
Your right it could be fixed in house. However, why fix it when those that buy it say it works and those that use it say bugs! By updating java and installing the accessible bridge myself. I have got past a few of the bugs, but not all. At 05:39 AM 3/7/2011, you wrote: Alex and others, Despite Freedom Scientific's claims, JAWS appears not to fully support 64-bit Windows, either Windows 7 or Vista. HI Lellia. To be honest I'm less certain about bsc's wordstrain games, sinse similar, or indeed better versions of many of those games can be found for free. For instance, there are the games from http://www.omninet.net.au/~irhumph/blindgamers.htm which include a number of word games, and brainiac which functions rather like the word replica game. Then, there are the two dan Z titles chainlink and search party which are now freeware and can be found on www.usagamesinteractive.com, not to mention Jim kitchin's hangman and concentration found at www.kitchinsinc.net. You might also want to check out www.7-128.com which offer a number of accessible word games involving deffinitions and unscrambling words which don't cost much. This isn't to say you shouldn't buy the bsc games, just if your interested in word games, there are many others around some of which may offer similar or possibly even superior gameplay to bsc's. [Audyssey] 7-128 was here I go again
Unfortunately, their in the process of rejiggering their demos to online versions which will be far easier to try out. while this will be good in the long run, in the short term it does make their games undemoable. However, I do have both games and can recommend them, especially now that they run with sapi rather than the nasty game voice they used to have (which actually mades some of the deffinitions games quite unplayable sinse you couldn't here the word correctly). I can also recommend their detective mystery games, more like a gamebook than standard if with a choice based conversation system and fun background ambience and videos. Beware the grue! I purchased word strain volume1. I also do not like volume2 as hang man and bg brainiac is better. But I love word blast and word jitter in word strain volume1. In word blast, its nice to type as many words as I can in the short amount of time given. And what's nice of word blast, I copy each word displayed which I do not know the meaning of. Re: [Audyssey] Seamlessly upgrading DirectX
Hi Thomas, How does OpenAl handle 3d simulation with normal headphones? I found that to be the main issue with the 3d rendering in DirectSound. It gave a very poor experience for those who did not actually have a 5.1 setup which I do not, and I believe most people will be using stereo either through headphones or speakers. I have not yet tested the 3d functions of XAudio2, as I primarily make sidescroller and adventure games. Like many others I get easily lost in the full 3d fps titles, not so much because I am unable to hear where things are located but more because I can never seem to figure out exactly how I'm facing and how the passages twist and turn etc, and these have only really been 2d games. Add yet another dimention and I have a feeling I'd be truly lost. Lol. I did look at OpenAl a few years ago before I decided to have Streemway developed, but got discouraged by the fact that it could not be bundled in with the game as far as I could gather at the time. The user had to run yet another instalation package which made me decide to skip it. Kind regards, Philip Bennefall - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: phi...@blastbay.com; Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Monday, March 07, 2011 2:07 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Seamlessly upgrading DirectX Hi, Yes and no. [Audyssey] Request for a programmer
Hi. As some people may know, I'm a huge fan of the gamebook series the chronicles of arborell found at www.arborell.com One of the few problems with gamebooks, is that of combat, being as it's just you rolling dice in a highly dull grindy you hit it and lose x amount of hp type of way, so the gm of the site, wain densly has recently (ie a couple of days ago). Produced a more complex combat system where your character can choose a type of attack, then the enemy defends, and if the defense is successful, a certain amount of points are lost. The system is explained in a fair degree of detail, and looks a great resolution for the various combats, see the rules pdf at http://www.arborell.com/windhammer.zip My concern however, is this will make combats deeply long winded, sinse it'll involve looking up four different sets of numbers on various tables. Already there are people who don't play the randomly generating gamebook adventure torchlight, sinse they do not like the table system used to generate rooms, monsters and creatures (and that involves only three tables). This sort of task though, namely in putting some numbers such as your opponents' combat value, then getting some out, such as your opponent's attack etc strikes me as one which a program could do far more easily than a human being. Even if the program didn't track endurence lost but simply asked you for attack type, defense type etc and threw up the correct numbers that would be a distinct advantage. I'm not sure if Jacob, Tom, or anyone else could do this, but it would be a great bennifit to the chronicles, for vi and sited players alike. Unfortunately the gm, while a great author and gamebook writer, is not a programmer which is why he hasn't done this himself. if I had the skills (which I assume are relatively basic), to create some number generators according to the system, I'd try myself, but sadly I don't currently, nor do I have the time to learn, though from the litle I know, making this slightly automated and taking a load off players' shoulders in this way would be no more difficult than creating a casino game like black jack, sinse it just involves putting in numbers, standard dice rolling and adding appropriate modifyers. hopefully someone can help with this, and thus give everyone a fine set of gamebooks with a good and detailed combat system. I've talked to Josh off and on about what Draconis is up to, and I'm not really at liberty to discuss anything more than he has already told the list. However, the most I can say is that Draconis is in the process of writing a cross-platform game engine for Mac OS X and Windows, and they have plans to eventually port all or at least most of their games from Visual Basic to C++. That's a big reason why we haven't heard or seen anything new from them. That said, I hope nobody reads this and then begins bombarding their inboxes asking for more information as they won't get any. Draconis has their own time table, and will release all the upgraded games if and when they are ready. Anyway, to make a long explaination short they haven't time to write anything new that I am aware of, and since they have officially dropped Visual Basic 6 they are not going to continue building Pinball Party Packs etc using that language. Future Pinball Party Packs will probably come once Pinball Extreme has been ported to C++. That's what I am given to understand. Cheers! On 3/6/11, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Thanks tom. [Audyssey] Mexican cuisine - Re: A Suggestion for SCW
Those authentic Mexican tamales are the ones I really like! They have very good flavor, and they are really, really, hot! Most Americans would not touch them. That would be OK with me. Give me about 4 of those and some good cold beer. A lot of places in Mexico serve their beer at room temperature, which is a huge problem for me. They are outdoor restaurants along the beach, and room temperature is, well, disgusting to me. My beer must be really cold to be good. --- Laughter is the best medicine, so look around, find a dose and take it to heart. - Original Message - From: Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Sunday, March 06, 2011 1:13 AM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] A Suggestion for SCW Hi Dark, Well, I wouldn't say it is so much a matter of forgetting the rest of the world exists, but more the fact we have a tendency of borrowing ideas from other countries and somehow making it uniquely our own thing. We do this with everything weather it is food, books, games, you name it. Someone sees it and then comes back to the USA and comes up with his or her own version of it. The idea is original enough but the end result often turns out to be quite a bit different than the original thing he/she was trying to copy. For example, let's take the topic of pizza. During the late 1800's and early 1900's I've heard there was a large amount of Italian imigrants who came to New York City and many of them opened restaurants selling Italian food. Perhaps the most popular was true Italian pizza. Unlike the American version of pizza we have now these pizzas were square, thin crust pizzas, baked in a brick oven, and were just sauce and cheese. What we think of as New York style pizza today. However, pizza became a very popular hit with New Yorkers and it wasn't long before American restaurant owners started creating their own versions of pizza, and it began to become popular all over the country. In very quick order restaurants stopped making square pizzas and made them round like a pie, and started experimenting with all sorts of toppings and sauces. In Chicago one restaurant owner, I don't remember the guys name, decided to make the worlds first deep dish pizza with a thick crust and several layers of meet and cheese. This became known as Chicago style pizza because it was first created in Chicago. Thus we borrowed the idea of pizza from the Italian imigrants who came to New York, setup shop, but American restaurant owners decided to take the idea and make it something more uniquely American. Same thing could be said for Mexican food. There are hundreds of Mexican restaurants all over the country, but most of them don't really sell original Mexican food. Instead it is Americanized Mexican food. I have actually eaten some true Mexican food and I can say it totally taistes nothing like Taco Bell or any of the other Mexican restaurants that try and pass themselves off as Mexican. For one thing different spices etc which totally changes the flavor of the food, and I have eaten some true Mexican hot tamales so hot it felt like I swallowed a blow torch. Fact of the matter is most Americans aren't use to eating food quite that spicy and hot, and so the Taco Bell's of the world make a plane facsimile of Mexican dishes with their name on it. Anyway, the point is as a culture we just take ideas, borrow them, and somehow make them our own. Change them to suit our taistes or personal likes/dislikes. This is obviously what happened to Harry Potter. It was too British for the publishers and they wanted to Americanize it to suit an American audience. In fact, I've read this was one reason Harry Potter got a very slow start in the U.S. Harry Potter came close to never being published at all, because it didn't fit in with the kinds of childrens books that were being published at the time. For example, before Harry Potter became a big name block buster publishers didn't think they could sell it to an American audience. They clamed that an orfened boy, growing up in a disfunctional house hold, going off to boarding school wasn't something that would be of any interest to parents and children. To say nothing of the fact it delt with magic which was being regarded as off limits in a childrens book. To put it bluntly the kind of book Joanne Rowling was selling was taboo for a lot of reasons. Remember at the time Harry Potter came on the scene the dust was just beginning to settle down after R. L. Stine's Goose Bumps series came out in the early to mid 90's. The Christian right, as usual, were suing schools, libraries, etc trying to get such books banned and/or removed. The end result of the Christian rights' hell raising was that publishers had decided to begin turning down books dealing with magic and other themes dealing with the super natural. The only thing was that Harry Potter was becoming so popular in England American publishers had to take notice
[Audyssey] chili today, and hot tamale - Re: A Suggestion for SCW

Oh, I bet that was a surprise for your Grandma. I remember my wife and I were in Texas visiting relatives when we purchased a few tacos and tamales from this Mexican place, run by actual Mexicans, and I ate it and the food was so hot it felt like a blow torch, but I ate the entire thing. I actually found it quite good although I have never ever eaten anything quite that hot in my life. My wife took one bite and spit it out. She couldn't eat anything, and I ended up eating her share of the meal too. I don't know what spices they used in the hamburger for the tacos but it was really really spicy. As I said nothing like the slop you get at Taco Bell that is suppose to be Mexican food but really isn't. Re: [Audyssey] Request for a programmer
Really it would depend upon how much of the process you want to automate. At the moment the process goes like this: 1, your told the combat value of an attacker (or yourself), in the text. 2: you decide (or make a roll for if it's an npc), what type of attack to use, thrust, sweep, charge, or strike and look up the difficulty of making that attack on a table relative to the combat value of your opponent. 3: you decide (or roll for), what part of your opponent to attack, head, torso or limbs, and look up the difficulty of making that type of attack on a similar table. 4: you then add these two numbers together and roll 2 D6, if the number is less than the difficulty you've made a successful attack. 5: If the attack is successful you look on yet another table to gett the difficulty of defending against that type of attack. 6: you then either decide or roll for the type of defense used and compare it on another table against the type of attack. 7: you add these two numbers together and roll 2 D6, a roll of less means the defense has been successful. 8: if the attack succeeds and the defense fails, you then look up on the damage table to see what damage that type of attack at that body part does. There are also some rules for adding modifyers for the size of opponent and environment of the combat but sinse these are fairly basic editions and don't involve tables I don't think they need worrying about. My main concern is all the looking up on tables. If you could enter the combat value, type of attack, targit of the attack and type of defense, and get the attack difficulty, defense difficulty and damage, this woulod make life significantly easier, heck, you could automate the hole process and do the D6 rolls for success or failure though I imagine this would be a good deal more complex. While I think this is a good system, there are even rules for adding modifyers to the difficulty of certain attacks or opponents in different environments such as narrow passages or with particular sized opponents (though these don't involve tables just some basic pluss and minus to attack and defense difficulty), I do think this is a case where automating these tables could vastly speed up the process. The tables are fairly small, the combat value ones for attack type and defense type are eleven x 3, and all the others are 3 x 4, but stil it is a rather long winded process when going sequencially and one I think a computer could do far better than a human at many points. [Audyssey] Games we'd like to play, Time of deciet
This is an exciting new turn based stratogy game played on a modern computer, in which you command such powerful units as text E-mails, html E-mails and twitter clients across a square map of millions of participants. The basic principle of the game is to come up with as many convincing game ideas as possible. The more people's attention you capture, the greater resources of snideness, overconfidence and general smarm you have. You can then channel these resources back into generating more vital units which can be used to capture more people's imagination with whacky game ideas. Which stratogy to follow? Will you opt for a costly but wild idea which is likely to sound impressive but be totally implausable? or will you go for a realistic idea which is more likely to capture more hard core teretory, but be less appealing in power of persuasion. this game can be played online, any time, against hundreds of opponents on the audeasy list, and leader boards will be held for those who manage to convince most people and gain the largest amount of is this a real game? responses. Best of all you can play on a wide variety of user created idiological maps. the wished for beat em up, the impressive rpg, the whacky arcade game, the user in put engine, and the formidable sounding plot monster rpg! Can you convince the maximum amount of people that many games are really in the works? or will you be found out for the fraud you are! Time of deciet is not in developement, and will absolutely, positively and completely never be available from such great accessible game developers as u n interactive, n o t games, braingonesoft, projectsinc.net and lackof entertainment. Re: [Audyssey] esp pinball classic
Hi, Actually, James North had to start a new company because when he originally left in 2001 he turned all rights of ESP Softworks over to Josh who ran Adora Entertainment/Draconis Entertainment now. Which was no big deal. When he came back in 2004 he simply got a new website, and named his new venture Alchemy Game Studios. It didn't really matter in the long term if he kept the original ESP trademark or not since by then all of us thought of ESP as Adora Entertainment. That's why when I took over ESP Raceway I changed it to USA Raceway. Although, I'm sure Josh would have willingly allowed me to use the ESP trademark I felt it was better in the long run not to use a trademark of another game company when it was easily changed. I didn't need the ESP trademark to write the game. In fact, in a way my version of Raceway is quite a bit different than the ESP Raceway that was preordered by early customers of the product from James North. So that helps distinguish the difference as well. Cheers! On 3/7/11, Hayden Presley hdpres...@hotmail.com wrote: Hi, Someone explain to mewhy James needed to start Alchemy Games? HI Charles, Lol! To tell the truth nothing beats a good stink bomb. I remember my freshman year in high school this one kid came to school with a couple of stink bombs and set them off in various places. The entire school stank like rotten eggs for at least a week after that. Admitedly it was a good prank, but I wished ground 0, the lunch room, didn't smell quite so bad. Made it hard to eat in there with the stench. Now, you want to talk about knotty pranks. A friend of mine was out visiting his grandma one year when he and his brother decided to pull a prank on the next door neighbors. They chucked a huge rock up the exhaust pipe of their car. The next morning the neighbor came out, started his car, and let it run to warm up. A couple of minutes later there was a loud bang and a huge crash as the rock shot out of the exhaust pipe and straight through another neighbor's picture window. Re: [Audyssey] A Suggestion for SCW
Hi Dark, Yes, I take your point, and you are absolutely right. It does seam the rest of the world isn't treated individually from the way it sounds. I wouldn't know, because that's just the way it is in terms of adds etc over here. Everything is modified to suit an American audience which, as you say, really strips it of its original culture and meaning. It doesn't seam that we do the reverse when targeting other cultures. As for the Simsons jokes Homer was talking about football, and no, I'm not talking about socker. The Dalase Cowboys is a popular American football team, and for a while had a great record and played the Super Bowl a few years in a row. Now, though, some of their mvp players have retired and the new draft players aren't as good. This year they played rather poorly over all. The Denver Broncos are also a football team and I haven't kept up with their stats this past season. HTH On 3/6/11, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Tom. Historically I can see the logic of that, sinse as in the case of pizza, America had a lot of immigrants turning up with their own culture and ideas, however going in the other direction, ie, american exports to other places, it often seems that american companies, add agencies etc don't take into account that people in other countries do not always use the same language or have the same standards as the us. Take hollywood films for instance. Some years ago, I remember a huge controversy over a second world war film about the enigma machine which was used to crack the german radio code. The problem was where as in reality this had been done at the naval base in portsmouth (england), the Hollywood directors decided to relocate it to I believe los angeles and thus make it entirely American centered. Needless to say, the people who actually did! work on the code were extremely irritated at this, and it lead to a huge law sute. my point however, is that the concern of the directors here, much as with harry potter, was only to make something American, not with the actual historical content of the film. It would be like someone over here making a film about the entry of the japanese into the second world war, but having Liverpool bombed instead of pearl harbour, or making a film about the battle of getisberg set in London, --- -completely crazy! However my problem is the same process doesn't go on in reverse, American programs are not rebranded to appeal to audiences in other countries, neither are american products changed. I have for instance seen adverts over here talking about something being too good for Geeks which is a very Us expression, or using terms like sleep overs (I saw a recent wii title advertized in this way), which again are neither particularly British expressions, nor really concepts over here. Yet, American advertizers automatically assume that Britain is exactly like the states, and so do no rebranding or markiting at all. Over here, it's quite accepted that some things take place in America, much the same way watching an Anime series automatically implies that it takes place in japan. Take the simpsons. Frequently there are jokes on the simpsons about celebrities or ideas that are totally unknown over here, in fact I've often found myself utterly confused at some of the jokes. Take for instance the point where Homer works for Scorpio the james bond villain. Homer says his ambition is to own the dallis cowboys, and at the episode he ends up owning the Denver Bronco's. I'm not even sure which sport these two teams play, much less their track record which would be necessary to understand the joke. do we see head master Skinner, care taker willy, and Mo owning a pub? heck no! such a thing would be ridiculous. I think this is my main problem and the reason I talkedabout Americans forgetting about the rest of the world. Imports into the states are most often reclassified, redistributed and redubbed as American, even down to established historical fact, where as exports from the states simply assume the rest of the world is exactly the same, which actually seems a product of the imports, sinse if Americans are used to only uUs centric things and language, more people will assume that the rest of the world is exactly the same. Btw, this isn't intended as a wrant against America or as an attack on anyone in particular. Heck, this list, and the accessible games community in general is extremely diverse in terms of nationality, I'm just trying to highlight something of a social trend in this case which I've noticed. Also, i'm not implying that everything American is automatically bad, or worse than everything British. I've said before that the Us seems to have a generally much better atitude to disability than over here, and I actually really enjoy the simpsons. Beware the Grue! Hi Dark, Lol! Well, trust me some of the fan fiction I've read is a lot worst than what the American publishers have done. Admitedly though some places like the Sugar Quill attempt to stick to cannon as much as possible and I find their fan fiction archives of a much higher quality than you will find on fanfiction.net etc. Some of the writers on the generic fan fiction websites aren't worried about maintaining cannon and go off into alternative realities or something. Re: [Audyssey] Beat-M-Ups was Beat It Extreme
Hi Ken, Well, to be honest getting free acting really isn't the problem. I'm sure there is lots of people who would be willing to help. There were plenty of people who tried out for Angela Carter in Mysteries of the Ancients as well. The real problem is, as Philip has also mentioned, quality. There is a huge difference in highring a professional or semiprofessional voice talent verses taking on free voice talent for a project. For instance, equipment. Most of the people on this list have a $8.00 to $20.00 microphone they purchased to use Skype and things like that. While it is certainly fine for talking over Skype such microphones are not good enough for professional voice recordings. There is usually too much static, hiss, and background noise to clean them up properly. Plus if you have to do a lot of editing to clean them up chances are you will end up stripping some of the quality from the voice recording trying to drop out the background noise etc to say nothing of he extra time involved in editing and post production. I'd prefer someone who does voice recording have a professional recording microphone which most people wouldn't have unless they are a musician or do any kind of professional or semiprofessional recording at home to begin with. Second, they really need a fairly quiet place to do the recordings in the first place. You'd be surprised how many submissions had everyday background noise like a television in the next room, a car outside blowing is horn, and the sound of there PC fans going in the background. We obviously don't want any of that kind of background noise showing up in the recording because you can't really edit it out. Professionals usually have a room that is fairly sound proof, computer fans that are extremely quiet, etc just so they can produce the clearest and cleanest recording possible. From the free voice recordings I've gotten from those trying out for Angela I felt just too much background noise was on the recordings. Finally, there is the issue of talent. While I appreciate everyone who sent in submissions some made too many mistakes when trying to do the recordings. They either didn't convey the right mood/expression in their voice, or they messed up the lines in some other way. We generally don't have this problem with professional voice talent. Basically, all I'm saying is you get what you pay for. If you don't use semiprofessional or professional voice talent it is going to come out in the game. If you aim for top quality like I do that really matters. If you just want to create something free, using average voice talent, then you are going to get a game of average quality. In this business I think money really does count when it comes to the kind of quality we can expect from a game. Hi, Well, to be honest that is a major thing that put me off Harry Potter fan fics for a long time. I was grabbing them off of generic fan fic websites and there was no attempt to edit or correct spelling errors, grammar errors, and people screwing up the names outright. That's why now days if I want a particular fan fic weather it is Tomb Raider, Harry Potter, Star Wars I try to go to places that moderate the fan fiction and edit it before posting. That's why I like the Sugar Quill because they do a decent job of making sure only decent stuff gets posted to the archives rather than just anyone's fan fiction. Re: [Audyssey] Seamlessly upgrading DirectX
Hi Philip, Philip wrote: How does OpenAl handle 3d simulation with normal headphones? I found that to be the main issue with the 3d rendering in DirectSound. It gave a very poor experience for those who did not actually have a 5.1 setup which I do not, and I believe most people will be using stereo either through headphones or speakers. My reply: Well, unfortunately not very well I'm afraid. That's the problem with FMOD, OpenAL, DirectSound, etc. In order to get high quality 3d virtual audio you have to have the hardware to do it. Either a set of 5.1 headphones such as I have, or go out and buy yourself a set of 5.1 surround sound speakers. The proper hardware is really a requirement if you plan to get true 3d virtualization using OpenAL, XAudio2, FMOD, whatever. Which is really the source of the problem for us as game developers. The ggaming technologies are litterally growing by leaps and bounds and weather you are using Linux, Mac OS, or Windows there are decent APIs that render pretty realistic 5.1 surround sound. The problem is that computers don't ship with a set of Creative Labs 5.1 pro gaming speakers etc so in order to get the kind of speakers you need that is another $75 to $99 investment which most gamers won't bother paying for unless they have a need for it which creates a kind of chicken and egg situation. Gamers won't buy 5.1 surround sound speakers or headphones because at present there aren't that many games that really need it. On the other hand developers such as you and I hesitate to include 5.1 surround sound in our games because if they don't have the hardware to begin with there is no reason to bother with it. they won't hear it, and if anything it won't sound that good on a ordinary set of stereo speakers or headphones. I don't really know what to do about that myself, because it seams like a case of darned if you do and darned if you don't. Philip wrote: I did look at OpenAl a few years ago before I decided to have Streemway developed, but got discouraged by the fact that it could not be bundled in with the game as far as I could gather at the time. My reply: Hmmm..I don't know about that. As far as I know there is no restriction of bundling OpenAL with your product as long as you provide a copy of the end user license agreement for it. Plus there are now two different branches of OpenAL now. there is a copy of OpenAL, the original version hosted and maintained by Creative Labs, and another one called OpenAL Soft. OpenAL Soft is the version run on Linux and Mac OS as their version his being regularly updated, and is the version I would use for development since it appears to be better maintained/updated. As far as redistribution goes I'm not sure what you read to give you that impression that it can't be bundled with a product. I know with Linux apps there is a very good reason why they would be seperate packages/installers because it has to do with how the operating system is maintained. If you were to install a game using apt-get it would detect missing components and install them as necessary. For example, doing apt-get install mota-1.0-i386.deb would first initiate a dependency check and if OpenAL-Soft wasn't installed it would prompt you to install. If you Answer yes it would go to the Ubuntu or Debian application repository, fetch the necessary package, install it and then install the game. This is actually one of the strengths of the Linux deb and rpm package managers because it takes all the guess work out of figuring out if this or that component is missing or not. If it is missing it will just install it for you. This may or may not be what you are talking about. Re: [Audyssey] games we'd like to play: hospital madness
There is a textgame called Enhanced which is a bit like the game idea too. You volunteer to get kinds of hardware attached to your body, some of which makes you see infra-red, some of which boosts your intelligence. You have to get out before the last fatal experiment. I wasn't trying to be serious. Anyway, your idea sort of reminds me of a movie my wife and i rented a few months back. I don't remember it very well but this woman and her boy friend end up in this hospital and the doctors, nurses, etc were all criminals. As it turns out her boy friend was in on the scam, and the woman had to try and escape the hospital. One place she hides in the movie is she hides in the Morg and pretends to be one of the dead bodies. I sort of thought it would be sort of funny if she was hiding in there and one of the dead bodies turns out to be a zombie. Lol! Re: [Audyssey] Game Demos
Hi Shaun, No offense, but what is your obsession with reformat, reformat, reformat, etc. I don't want to sound harsh, but when you get on the list saying stuff like that it makes you sound like a complete computer idiot. As a matter of fact reformatting is not the only way to reset the timed trials, and if you knew half the things you claim too you would know that by now. For one thing if you know you are going to do this in advance you can create a Windows restore point which will back up the registry before it gets modified. So when the trial ends simply go into Windows restore and restore your old registry. That's the simplist fix for the problem. You can also simply export the registry before installing, and if you want to run the trial again, uninstall the demo, import your saved registry, and reinstall it. Again not a big problem if you plan ahead. If someone didn't prepare in advance it can still be fixed without resorting to a reinstall. Someone with the skills such as myself can open the registry locate the keys that caused the timed trial to expire, and blow them away. Reinstall the game and as good as new. This method isn't recommended for the average computer user but anyone with an ounce of programming knowledge who has worked with the registry before can certainly do it. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] 7-128 was here I go again
Hi Dark, Lol! Yeah, FreeTTS definitely won't win any awards for best sounding speech engine of the year. Ug! I hate FreeTTS, and it sounds like Robbie the Robot on drugs or something. I'm so glad they finally upgraded to MS Sapi for Windows. Cheers!
