Your image is in Indexed Colour Mode. Lots of tools do work in that mode. That
can happen if you paste a RGB image into an Indexed image, The reverse is also
true, Indexed can become RGB.
Change to RGB : Image menu -> Mode -> RGB

Import the pdf at 300 ppi which does give the correct canvas size. Gimp is an 8
bit editor so that is ok.
CMYK is the problem - Try an online converter such as http://www.pdf2cmyk.com/
and it looks like the GRACol2006 icc is the one to use. (see the end of that
webpage)

300 ppi template, that's fine.
Sounds like you have it cracked.
You will not lose any quality with the text layers, a solid / simple coloured
background layer will be ok, it is more complex images that become fuzzy when
scaled up.

Hate to be beat. Lots of messing around resulting in a very simple
look-up-table. A tiny png (8 pix) g2.png attached.
method: when you do not reduce the size much (rotate, shear or something)
All about downscaling, not upscaling.
There are one or two filters in the gmic_gimp plugin that might be better than
Cubic or NoHalo

The windows version of mathmap dates back to Gimp 2.6. It is a 32 bit plugin.
Windows Gimp 2.10 is strictly 64 bit. That plugin will not work.
As far as I know there is no 64 bit version available.

You can have 20 mm @ 300 ppi (a print resolution) which gives 236 pixels
or 20 mm @ 72 ppi (typical screen resolution) = 57 pixels.
A common beginners mistake is not checking the resolution when making a new

FG-select has not improved much from Gimp 2.8. Usually have to finish off going
around the perimeter in quick mask m
square for you to drag and change the shape of the box.
The shape of the text box is a little different from earlier versions of Gimp.
By request the large 'handles' are now much smaller
