No, I think they face out. That end is easy, compared to the connector

Anyone looking for a 300CE parts car or project?

Got a call today offering an 88 for $1000. I went to look, knowing
better.

Dead battery, so I couldn't turn it over. Claimed the motor made a bang
and started blowing black smoke - her explanation of what her mechanic
told

her was interpreted by me to mean, thrown rod. Oil cap wouldn't come off,
entire engine bay filthy and unkempt. 142k on the clock, probably not
real,

at the very least its been abused for a while.

Ran into something, needs headlight, bumper cover, pass fender and grill -
hood looked good, grill would be acceptable but is dented.

Interior is classic left outside for too long condition, complete with
tears

in leather.

Paint overall is actually pretty good, could use a buffing out and good
cleaning. Currently sitting under trees. Currently rust free.

Car has 2k worth of wheels and tires on it - they don't come with it.

I offered her $200, she said she'd think about it - I'd hardly driven away
when she called me and said she'd take it. Sitting here thinking, I don't
want to waste the time and money on it for parts or to fix up. The rear
window is about as nice as I've seen one in a while though - none of that
white milky delamination most have. Almost worth it for that.

Car is in Knoxville, TN. I have no interest, financial or otherwise.
Would

probably do more that 200 on eBay, but I don't feel its worth the effort.

Let me know.
Mike

There is NO really correct way as Mercedes discourages any adjustment
in the field. Still they finally did publish a description in the late
'80s/early 90s (attached) and that might be considered preferred.

It CAN be done on an OM602.96 engine without pulling off the intake
manifold (it just looks impossible).

The screw adjustment (as outlined) is MUCH easier and minor adjustments
a quick and easy. Establishing the correct shim thickness is more of a
challenge.

[MBZ] Wires to radio

2006-05-17 Thread Zoltan Finks

How many wires run to the back of the radio? I've got three hanging out of
the hole that used to be where the radio lived, but the PO left vacant.

I ask because the PO seemed to have a habit of screwing around with the
wires in the thing, and I'm not sure what he did (or was trying to do). The
cigarette lighter base is missing, along with the glove box light (the hole
for which has a few wires running out of it with crude splicings of speaker
wire onto them).

So I'm hoping that the three wires that are hanging out of the radio hole
are the three I'll need to hook up a radio. Sound right?

Ah. Interesting insight, Bruce.

Interesting subject to me. I've seen school bus drivers wave to city bus
drivers. I've known Harley riders not to wave at Jap bike riders (but other,

I can say that I often wave to other fellow commuters on bicycles -
especially in the winter around here, when you truly have something in
common with them (fortitude).

[MBZ] Glove box latch adjust

2006-05-17 Thread Zoltan Finks

Anyone know if the glove box latch (the part that receives) is adjustable? I
think I just did adjust it, whether it was meant to be or not.

The door was not closing tightly enough to have the side surface that the
driver can see be nicely concealed. So I loosened the two screws and pushed
the receiving part of the latch toward the front of the vehicle. Tested,
then did it again. It helped noticeably.

There is a reason Harley riders don't like ricers.
Every couple of years some doctor or other gets the cotton wool out and

Problem is one day some sort of politically correct government will listen

The vast majority of motorcyle only fatalities are young inexperienced

Re: [MBZ] Wires to radio

2006-05-17 Thread Dan Sandy Steadman

Brian,
What a mess! Sounds similar to others I have seen.

Depending on the radio you use, and the condition of your current wiring,
you may be in for a bit of wiring. Hopefully, others will respond as well,
and we can compare notes.

The original Becker has two audio or speaker outputs: a left and a right.
The fader control located in the console divides these outputs between the
front and back. If you use an aftermarket radio, it is likely to have four
outputs: one for each speaker. So, you will need to take the fader out of
the system for best performance. Try to trace the wires from the back of the
fader to the original radio. The PO may have already doctored (or butchered)
these wires as well. Then you will need to identify the wires to each
speaker, cut them and wire them into the appropriate output on the
replacement radio. In most cases, you will find the low side of the speaker
cable pairs wired together near the fader control. When you install the
replacement radio, make sure you separate these, and each output should be
in independently wired.

The original Becker, being a mechanically tuned radio does not need a
constant power source for the memory, as a new replacement radio will
require. You will need to find a source. Use a trouble light or multi-meter
to find +12V with the keys removed. There is a source on the ignition switch
or light switch. Make sure you fuse this line. A better place is the wire to
the dome light. Avoid routing the constant voltage wire around the clock as
the coil in the clock can induce noise the radio will pick-up. I recently
assisted a friend with an upgrade in his W123 ('79 300D) and we found a red
wire that went to the dome light and spliced into that. The confusion factor
here is that the switched +12 volts currently going to the Becker is likely
to be a red wire also, and is controlled by the ignition switch, so it will
not work for the B+ (memory) requirement of the aftermarket radio.

Look around for a blue wire. The blue wire that plugs into the Becker is for
the power antenna, if your car is so equipped. The brown wire is the
ground. I suggest a separate ground to a fresh source. A poor ground is a
common problem with updated audio installs.

Wires to mechanical Beckers:

Blue: Antenna
Brown: Ground
Black: Switched 12 volts

Wires to electronic Beckers
Pin 1 - off-set Ground, Brown wire
Pin 2 - Ignition + 12 V Black wire
Pin 3 - Illumination + 12 V Gray wire
Pin 4 - Constant (memory) + 12 V Red wire

On my W123 and others I have worked on, the speaker pairs are as follows
(yours may be different):

Left Front White connector,
(+) Gray w/ red stripe
   (-) Gray
Left RearWhite connector,
(+) Red/ black stripe
   (-) Black
Right Front Black Connector,
 (+) Green w/ black stripe
   (-) Black
Right Rear Black Connector,
(+) Black w/green stripe
   (-) Black

This is a lot of wiring, but done carefully and properly is worth your time.
When adding and splicing wires, I always solder the wires and cover the
splices with heat shrinkable tubing (available at Radio Shack). I believe
this is a better method than crimp on splice connectors (personal opinion).

Hope this is helpful,

How many wires run to the back of the radio? I've got three hanging out of
the hole that used to be where the radio lived, but the PO left vacant.

I ask because the PO seemed to have a habit of screwing around with the
wires in the thing, and I'm not sure what he did (or was trying to do). The
cigarette lighter base is missing, along with the glove box light (the hole
for which has a few wires running out of it with crude splicings of speaker
wire onto them).

So I'm hoping that the three wires that are hanging out of the radio hole
are the three I'll need to hook up a radio. Sound right?

Thanks for the help list. But even without the parking brake shoes the
noise continues. I can hear the rubbing of the pads on the rotor and am
more convinced that the rotor is the problem; it just seems too loose.
Maybe wheel bolts are too long to give a tight fit, but I really snug
them with a cheater bar. The basic sound at very low speed is the rotor
flopping on the hub and at high speed a constant rubbing and the
occasional bang. A warped rotor? Something in the brake hydraulics? I
guess it's time to switch rotors as a test as I'm getting a bit tired of
replacing parts with no effect. Thanks for the help .

Neal,

First note that back shock absorbers can make funny noises too. However if
you believe the problem is with breaks here is a couple of things to try.

#1 swap rotors with other side.

#2 take brake caliper and compress it like you were putting on new pads.
Then take a pair of needle nose vise grips and clamp off rubber brake line.
This will disable the brake on that side. Note that this is not safe. Also
note your car will pull to one when applying brakes.

The first one will tell you of the problem is the rotor. The second one will
tell you if the problem is in the brakes at all.

Actually, a lot of your Mercedes was not manufactured by Mercedes.

Here are the manufacturers of a few major components:

Brake system - ATE or Bendix
Cooling system - Behr
Fuel system - Bosch
Radio - Becker
Climate Control - Behr

These are just a few major systems that I can think of and every one of
these manufactures have facilities around the world. In other words, a lot
of your Mercedes parts were made in places other than Germany and many were
made in Asia!

Oh, and your OEM wheel bearings were made in Japan.

Not being racist, just thinking that this means that there is a cheap

Any word on whether this indicates that I have a McParts water pump - and

Re: [MBZ] Rear brake part 2

2006-05-17 Thread Neal Kramarcy
I know this is strange. And for years I had no problems with the rear
brakes or noise. This car had been used by my ex until last year and I
rarely drove it unless to tend to a repair job. But in the last year,
after the rotors were replaced, this noise appeared. Since I thought it
a bad driveaxle and I was a bit short on cash and had a reliable 300TD
for a daily driver, I parked the coupe. But once I started attending to
the noise problem and replacing various parts, all with no effect, the
rotor and /or bolts are my point of attack now. These are the original
bundt pans (I labeled the inside of wheel since I sometimes swaped them
around with the others). The rotor has the locating hole and I position
it on the pin and snug everything down. One of the first times I heard
the sound I pulled the wheed and found the brake pad pins loose and
thought that was a possible source of the problem, but since then the
pins are driven home and flush with the caliper. Last night I removed
the parking shoes on the suspect wheel, so even if the bolts were too
long there is nothing in there to rub. A few weeks ago one of my
strategies was to compress the pads into the caliper before leaving in
the morning and got a little bit of relief. My thinking was a faulty
caliper with failed seals ( the caliper was the original and looked
quite worn at the piston edges). Yet replacing the caliper changed
nothing. I will check the perceived tightness of the wheel tonight
after snugging the bolts. Maybe the bolts a loosening from the hub
enough to give the problem, so I will switch bolts as a test.

Neal

Jim Cathey wrote:

This sounds totally strange. The rotor is one piece, and is supposed
to be tightly pinned between the hub and the wheel by the bolts. I
believe it has an extra sixth hole for a locator pin that's on the hub
that has to be in the right rotor hole or you can't even put the wheel
on. I don't see how the rotor could be loose at all without the wheel
also being loose. Wheel bolts that are too long (such as alloy wheel
bolts used on steel wheels) will protrude into the hub far enough to
interfere with the parking brake mechanism. That's usually obvious,
and bad!

These _are_ the right wheels for the car, right? Stock alloys?

[MBZ] Diesel injector return hose

2006-05-17 Thread jwreames
I've noticed that the return hose for the OM615/6/7's and the OM606's appears
to have the same ID, maybe a little thicker wall, and the cotton covering is a
different color.. maybe a little tighter on the OM606 stuff...

Does anyone know what the difference is? Is the new stuff made of viton
versus Buna/Nitrile/Normal rubber? (I recall reading that Mercedes switched
to biodiesel resistant hoses in the 90's.. I'd think a 99 would use it) Can the
new stuff be used on the older engines? (I'm temporarily using the old stuff
on a newer engine because my lines were leaking badly, and I had the Old
stuff around (~190mi/day)) Rusty says that the old stuff is 9.50/meter, where
the new stuff is 4.00/meter.

I ride a Honda CB900F which has a full fairing and the only people who ever
don't wave at me are Harley riders. My wife's bike is a Kawi 454LTD and the
Harley guys always wave. Interestingly I was gassing up the Kawi one day and a
Harley guy (late model fatboy) came over and complimented my Harley. He was of
course ignoring the Kawi badging on the sidecovers (the tank is custom with no
badging) the inline twin motor and the big radiator upfront. Eh whatever... He
did give me a funny look when I fired it up and took off, being liquid cooled
it is very very quiet.

Its one of those slow lists. It will generate traffic every so often.
That is why I dont have a bunch of little specialized lists like mbz.org
was. People have complained about having too much traffic with one
combined list like this but the alternative is hardly any traffic at
all. I do have the specialized lists though for the biodiesel, SL, and
older MB vets cars though. I also though you were posting on banned and
responded in banned fashion when in fact it was biodiesel. My mistake.

I've not driven one of them, but I know firsthand how *fun* a E300D-t is to
drive :):) If you EVER get the chance to buy one, don't hesitate! You will want
to have the front upper spring perches checked, as well as the doors under the
gaskets (keep an eye on them)... as well as the usual OM60x IP seal issues. (I
understand that GP's can be a MAJOR hassle. When mine go, if they are stuck, I
will pony up, then make sure to pull them and antisieze them... as well as an
annual pulling/reaming of them as a prophylactic measure.

BTW does anyone know the part number/price of an OM606 GP reamer? (The plugs
are about 7 long IIRC, which really presents an opportunity for carbon to pack
in there... Also, does HARD driving and lots of highway mileage help burn out
any carbon which may have accumulated in there?

The traction control DOES tend to kick in a bit much for my tastes (and it
seems to kick in way early)... did they put ESP on the 210.025's or were they
ASR only?

I've definitely had to tone down my use of the pedal, as it behaves VERY
differently from my (retired) 126.120 did... You can drive it like you stole
it, but you need to disable ASR and I'm sure its hard on tires (chirp chirp)..

The ONLY thing I would complain about is that the truck nozzle at the place
where I fuel will ALMOST fit in the neck properly... if it had maybe 1/4 more
clearance in the neck It would be good. (60gpm nozzle is sweet!) (although the
slow nozzle is still 25gpm...)

Nooo, you will need more than that.

Grabbing the cig lighter power is a standard indicator of someone being in
there doing an install who didn't know their posterior from a golf green, so
get a flashlight and start looking at what's up with the wires inside the
dash.

However as stereos do use two power sources (one unswitched for the
display/clock/antenna, one switched for the main unit functions), if you are
insanely lucky he may have just used the lighter and glove box power hot
wires and maybe the actual stereo harness hasn't been messed with. Too much.

I just HATE it when guys do half-wit stereo installs, then deliver the coup

Phew! Good stuff! Lots of perspectives. That was truly funny that that
Harley rider mistook the Kawi for one. It's like how? In terms of mistaking,
it's getting harder to tell a Harley from a Euro bike because they have been
trying to hard to emulate (though this may be dying back now). But some of
the Japanese bike makers have actually de-designed their engines, going to a
pushrod config. just to achieve that Harley sound. Sometimes they actually
fool me audibly from a distance these days.

Yes, deer are a big worry. On my way to work one morning at about 4 a.m. two
ran across the highway. I stuck to my policy of braking as hard as I safely
could as soon as I ever saw a deer by the road. This is what saved me that
morning. They both froze right in my lane, and I was able to bring er to a
stop so close that I could see the texture of their fur in my headlight. The
thing is, that swerving either direction could put you right in their path
if they don't freeze. That's why my policy was to brake hard and hold my
line.

And yes, I am glad that I no longer ride. I thank God I was able to remain
uninjured for the years that I rode, and I was actually, in a way, thankful
when my Sportster got stolen. It would've needed some work soon anyway. The
only problem was that it was my only form of trasportation aside from a
bicycle. And I had no insurance. Again, can't complain though.

Re: [MBZ] Glove box latch adjust

You're right, I've wasted valuable bandwidth and keyboard wear-and-tear.

Actually, it didn't feel like it was adjustable, rather it felt like I
forced it. So just wondering out of my sense of curiosity.

Phew! Good stuff! Lots of perspectives. That was truly funny that that
Harley rider mistook the Kawi for one. It's like how? In terms of
mistaking,
it's getting harder to tell a Harley from a Euro bike because they have
been
trying to hard to emulate (though this may be dying back now). But some
of
the Japanese bike makers have actually de-designed their engines, going
to a
pushrod config. just to achieve that Harley sound. Sometimes they
actually
fool me audibly from a distance these days.

2006-05-17 Thread P. D. Ferguson
You had more sophisticated advisors than did I--I was simply
advised that there's two kinds of bikers, them that's been down, and them
that's goin'. Forty three years later, I'm still riding, but more
cautiously every year, and have yet to become the second kind of biker. I
spent February on a rented Beemer in Western Australia and had one of the
best rides yet--for me, the risk is worth the experience. It's not for
everybody.

I absolutely agree with Richard. Anything less than 2/0 cable is not
adequate for diesels, especially if the starters or batteries are not
100 percent--which they are not if you are using jumpers. BTDT

Diesels like to consume big amps. Did a study once that found John
Deere starters (made by whoever???) required 450A during the start
cycle of a new engine ( we built portable air compressors ). Detroit
Diesel and Deutz were in the 300A range while stroking their associated
engines, a 3 cyl in the Deutz case and a 6V92T on the Jimmy.

Wow. So make sure the cable is BIG. I use what looks like 2/0 flex
welding cable, and is no more than 10 feet long. #4 is pretty puny for
Mercedes applications IMO.

Re: [MBZ] cruise control amp

did nothing but switch the rear fog light bulb and the brake light
bulb.

Neither was burned out. Cruise now works at all speeds. WTF?

Corrosion in the socket causing intermittent contact.

Old cruise controls do that. They can become intermittent. Sometimes
using them daily improves reliably and sometimes not (but they USUALLY
act up again following a period of disuse). They will often work for an
hour or two and then quit or they may not work until the engine is
REALLY warmed up. Resolding by someone with really good soldering skills
corrects these ABOUT 50% of the time (if you don't have really well
developed soldering skills DON'T practice on a cruise amp). Some units
really require replacement of the electrolytic capacitors or even
transistors. Schematics are very scarce - Mercedes doesn't supply them
to anyone.

Re: [MBZ] Diesel injector return hose

2006-05-17 Thread Zeitgeist

FWIW, I finally got tired of monkeying around with stock return lines
that never seemed to last more than a year with bio, and splurged for
the viton stuff. Ordered 10 feet from this site for $3.22/ft.
