Well the hearache just keeps on coming...London was a wonderful former Sids kid
that had a chance to be in his own home since February. He indured having to
lose a leag and a few other ailments, but he was a charming lovebug that always
looked pissed. But was ALWAYS very happy,he just had the look. :) I almost
adopted him myself back in January after losing my Xander. When the whole
Wednesday night crew got wind of me possibly adopting him, there were threats of
them all coming to visit EVERY wednesday. I was ok with that. But I just wasn't
ready for another yet and wonderful Cheryl took him home shortly after. He was a
great cat with a GREAT purrsonality...I love you London and I will miss you
sweetie :(

Today when I fed Hemy (she's in a cage on my back covered deck) she ate
while I was there. I spoke to her and reached a finger through the cage to
touch her head. No problem. Then, when I came back to clean her litter
box, I took a chance and placed my hand on the floor of the cage and
remained still. She moved closer, then nudged my hand. I stroked her cheek
and she moved her head around in obvious pleasure. I petted her a few
moments and she purred.

This is a "feral" cat who has, after tail amputation and being moved from
her familiar surroundings, been in a cage on my back deck for only Five
Days!

I'd say she is more afraid and cautious than feral, wouldn't you?

I'm keeping her in the cage for now, and will go slowly so she doesn't feel
pressured. But what a little sweetheart. It pains me to think of how
horribly humans have been to her, yet she is willing to forgive and perhaps
trust again. Bless her!

He had the coolest ears and purrsonality. He was all black except each ear had
white stripes,my fiance' couldn't believe it was reall and that someone
bleached them.Well for the 4 1/2 years we had him,his ears ALWAYS stayed the

We recently took in a kitten someone was going to put down from our vet, and
last night I was awaken in the middle of the night by a howling noise, i
thought it was our older cat but it was the kitten, she was growling in the
corner and for some reason went to the bathroom on the floor instead of her
litter box, is this common among FeLV cats? It was dr jeckle and Mr. Hyde,
she was back to her loving self this morning? I'm so confused I've never
seen an animal behave like that? When my older cat was dx he was more so
"sick" we thought he swallowed a bone? talk about one of the worst days

Ben and all your familymy heart breaks reading your post. My husband
and I well know the trips to the animal hospital in the middle of the night,
the transfusions, searching for anything that might help, the roller coaster
of emotions, the desire to do anything at all, to save your precious ailing
family member. We are so sorry your efforts and Dex's valiant fight had this
outcome, but you surely know that you have done absolutely everything within
your power to return Dex to good health. Sometimes, there is nothing we can
do but let them transition to another plane where we will see them
again...happy, healthy and wildly anticipating our arrival.

So no more doubts, no more second-guessing, no more "what if's". You've
done so much for your precious Dexter, and there is no doubt that he knows
it and loves you for it.

You'll have a hole in your heart for him always...no doubt. But maybe
you'll find just a little bit of Dex in other kitties that either are in
your life or will come into your life.

All our hearts hurt when we learn of the death of another one of these
special special kitties. Dex will have a beautiful candle to light his way

I'd like to start off this message by thanking all of you for your kind
words regarding Dexter over the past few days - - my wife and I have shared
and appreciated every one of the emails - it's meant a lot to us.
Unfortunately, this morning has proven to be heartbreaking to us both - we
received a call first thing this morning from East Dallas Animal Clinic's
Dr. Ken Cantrell that Dexter's condition had worsened over the course of the
night. After picking Dex up from the Emergency clinic yesterday morning, we
immediately took him to Dr. Wright at Lakewood Vet Center. Dr. Wright has
been on vacation since last week and we were told that he would be back
yesterday morning - but he hadn't yet returned. I took Dexter to see him on
three occasions last week for his lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulator
injections, but was only able to see him that Monday. When we took Dex in
on Friday when the swelling of his feet and face had begun, we were given no
advice by his staff who were unable to do anything other than give Dex his
shot and usher us out the door. They are all very caring people and I don't
blame them for anything, but I feel that any vet who runs a practice where
he is the only doctor on staff, should do a bit more to keep his patients
informed about his availability - that way precious minutes or hours or days
aren't wasted waiting for him to return. Fortunately, several weeks ago,
when trying to convince Dr. Wright to order the LTCI treatment (which took
him over a week to do) I was referred to the East Dallas Animal Clinic by
the LTCI folks - they had used the medication before. East Dallas Animal
Clinic is a wonderful place. We've worked with Dr. Ellsworth and Dr.
Cantrell there - - they are both compassionate and make a point of taking
calls from concerned pet owners. They have both been wonderful to work with
and have been open to taking every conceivable avenue with Dex's treatment.
I only wish we had been seeing them from the start. We rushed Dex to them
yesterday morning as soon as it became clear that Dr. Wright wouldn't be
returning. Again, I don't blame Dr. Wright, but when we took Dexter in for
his checkup three weeks ago and Dr. Wright informed us that anemia had set
in, his advice was to "take him home and make him comfortable." A week
passed as I researched and tried to communicate with him about alternate
treatments and off-label meds. When you factor in that week and the week he
took to order the LTCI meds, that's two out of the last three weeks where
Dex had little treatment. Again, why the difficulty in getting anything
done for Dex? East Dallas, however, fit Dex in on the first day we spoke
with him and started him on Acemannan injections. They had two remaining
doses remaining of that drug; a drug that was very beneficial to Dex last
year when he was first diagnosed. they sacrificed those 2 doses for Dex
without question - had I gone to them earlier, perhaps it would have had
more effect on him. Regardless, Dex seemed to make improvements while on
Immunoregulin, LCTI and the acemannan. FeLV and FIV are horrible diseases,
though, and I felt like there was something always sneaking up on Dex while
we treated him. We seemed to reverse the anemia, but his Lymph nodes were
swelling. Some days they would go down, other days, they would blow up.
When the mystery feet and face swelling started last week, he even responded
well with benadryl. That thing sneaking up on Dexter? Full blown cancer -
it wasn't just

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and encouragement... We spent some time
with Dex at the clinic last night and we told ourselves that Dex would tell us
what to do; that he'd let us know, somehow, what he wanted. Dex has always been
a fighter - he came to us under the hood of a car that had carried him, at only
4 weeks of age, across town, on highways and bumpy roads. He clung to the
engine of that car and came out covered in dirt, but full of love. He's been
with us since then (only a year and a half) and we have become so close to him.
We were told he didn't have a chance last October when his red blood cell
counts were at 3 and we discovered he was felv and fiv positive. He bounced
back quickly from the blood transfusion and seemed to return to normal quickly.
It's been tough for the last three weeks as we've tried immunoregulin,
acemannan and lymphocyte t-cell immunomodulator. He's been a trooper through it
all and always has a sweet chirp and a purr. So, last night, his wagging tail
and happiness at seeing us, combined with the relative calm he experienced when
we were with him and the look of hope in his eyes told us we couldn't give up.

success rate of doing chemo on lymphosarcoma at this stage. Maybe you should
try to consult with a vet oncologist immediately about his chances. If the
chemo could give him several more months is it worth it? If the chemo could
give him another year is it worth it? Chemo can be rough but I'm in a dog
cancer group and usually after a few days of being sick after the chemo
treatments the dogs are okay until the next round. I'm not sure how it affects
cats though. My dog was diagnosed a couple months ago with bone cancer and
chemo wasn't an option but radiation was an option for just a few extra months
with him. I asked myself those questions about how long would it give him and
would the pain he would endure be worth it. It's different for me because my
dog is old so I had to take that into consideration. Seems like I read in one
of the e-mails that Dexter isn't that old. Anyway, I had a little time because
my dog wasn't in pain so I talked with two different oncologist and they both
said the same thing. Talking with an specialist made me feel better about my
decision. One thing I have learned from the dog bone cancer group I'm in is that
there are no wrong decisions. You do what you think is right for Dexter. You

We are having a hard time making a very tough decision for Dexter. In the past
three days, Dex has suffered facial and paw swelling and has started having
difficulty breathing. Today has been bad and he is now receiving oxygen at the
Dallas emergency vet clinic. X-rays show that he has lymph node involvement in
every area and his liver and spleen are enlarged and have move out of the
proper body cavity. This puts him in, I think, stage 4 of lymphosarcoma. He is
whimpering and obviously in pain. We don't want to give up and we are willing
to do chemo for him. We want to do what's best for Dexter, but it is so hard to
make that final decision. Is it time for his suffering to be over? Does he have
a chance?

OK, so who says miracles and divine intervention do not exist? After a couple
of hours in the very hot sun, I found evidence that maybe VooDoo was alive and
close by. Then, I discovered that the police now have a NO trapping policy. I
went to my Japanese vet to see if he could find a trap. He was going to call
the city on Monday. So, back to being a little stressed, feeling as though my
best hope was gone.

A couple of hours later, a very short, but really hard rain came and I was once
again concerned because I thought he was hiding in a drain pipe. As soon as the
rain ended, I went to the back door and called out asking him to come home.
What do you know, he answered me with his crazy, whiny cry. After a few minutes
of trying to coax him into the house, I decided that he was either trapped or
hurt. I called to him and he continued to call back. Once I located him hiding
under a tree, I belly crawled on the wet ground to where he was. I reached
under, in the dark, expecting the worst. However, he let me grab him and pull
him out.

So, 48 hours after going missing, my baby is home safe and sound. We will be
watching closely for sniffles and signs of fever!

Thank you all for your advice and positive vibes. I truly believe that they
worked.

Melinda, Fuji and VooDoo

Re: [Felvtalk] Vets for Felv cats

2011-06-10 Thread Sara Kasteleyn

We have a wonderful holistic-friendly vet who makes house calls. She works in
conjunction with our "brick and mortar" vet for blood work, tests, etc. when
necessary. Now that we have lost our two FeLV+ angels, she takes care of our
new babies. The house call vet was the one that got us hooked up with LTCI.
I'm certain Taj and Rani wouldn't have lasted as long as they did without the
LTCI. Both eventually succumbed to lymphomas of different types. Brother and
sister. We will always miss them.

I don't think it's necessary to have a specialized vet...just a vet who is
special and willing to listen.

Do you all have your FeLeuk kitties seen by your regular vets? I talked
to a wonderful consulting vet I know re Miss Eleanor (formerly Sabrina)
& his first recommendation was Internal Medicine at U of WI, but then
said that this would probably not be necessary as long as she is
asymptomatic. That regular blood work, every 6 months, would be the
main requirement. Certainly hope that is the case as just a couple of
visits to UW would be well over $1000!

I would like to combine the services of a good regular vet, which I
think I have, altho he freely admits that is practice does not see a lot
of FeLeuk kitties - which is probably pretty much the case with all
non-specializing vets, I would think, with those of a holistic vet as
well. Do any of you do that?

Are any of you in Wisconsin?

Hi all,

I know I haven't posted in awhile, but I wanted to offer an update to those
of you who followed our story with our little bundle of spunk, Aggie.
We helped Aggie cross over this morning, and it was one of the hardest
things I've had to do. It was also the right thing to do. Her anemia
caused her to gasp for air since yesterday evening, and she was starting
to involuntarily shake, could no longer walk, make it to the litter
box, and could barely raise her head to watch the lizards running around
our patio. She was my little valiant fighter for 7 years, but
ultimately FELV took her from me. We tried everything short of a
transfusion, and it just wasn't enough.
I firmly
believe that LTCI bought us about a year of good quality time. Her
bloodwork was taking a VERY marked decline last June, and LTCI reversed it.

Unfortunately, FELV is a tough nut to crack and there was only so much
we could do.

It was very peaceful, she just went to sleep while we
sang her song to her , and told her what a blessing she has been in our
life. If love could heal, she'd have been the healthiest cat ever. But
right now, she's not in any pain, no more seizures, no more force
feeding, no more shots, and only peace.

There is a void in my home, and my heart right now. But I am so, so
thankful to have had her at all. I didn't even like cats before I met
her, and now I'm a sucker for them!

Thank you for your advice, your collective knowledge, and more importantly,
for the kindness you show to everyone who is dealing with this nasty
disease.

Peace to all of you, and good luck on your journeys with your beloved
fuzzbuckets.

Too emotionally exhausted to go into detail, but it is time. I've only had
this kitty since Monday & he has already stolen my heart. I'm thankful I got
to sleep in his room with him last night - he slept glued to me. He knows he
is loved.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Please add Rosie to CLS

Rosie passed last night, I could not bear to watch her wasting away. The
Lymphoma had
beat her. We had her on Pred and Leukeran-which shrank the mass near her throat
the
first week, then it came back with a vengeance the next week. We increased it
to
every
other day on the Leukeran to no avail. She was also on Lasix, Lysine, iron, b
vitamins,
Interferon. She always came into the kitchen and waited for me to give her the
meds,
but the last few days she began to clamp her jaw, like enough. She was being
syringe fed,
she couldn't eat-the mass in her neck got so large and hard. Her eyes became
empty and
she just wanted to hide, she was miserable. When I came home from work last
night, I
knew it was time. Thank you to the wonderful vets and staff at Sacramento Cat
Hospital
for staying late so we could help Rosie join her man, Murphy at the bridge-he
passed in
October from Lymphoma and anemia. Rosie is our 6th and last FeLV kitty-her 4
brothers
passed in their first year from anemia, despite all our efforts. I have never
felt so defeated
and empty in my life. I did not have a clue about FeLV when we rescued the
feral
babies.
It has been a long and sad 2 years, Rosie and Murphy each just made it to 2 1/2
yrs old.
Bless all of you fighting this battle-it is a long, and difficult journey, but
these babies deserve
all the love in the world. Alice with Miso and Sachi-the 2 negatives we adopted
when Rosie
got so depressed when she was left alone after Murphy passed.

Got a call at 5pm yesterday that someone had seen a kitty in the ATM drive
thru lane at a local bank. I ran up there & didn't see a thing at first. She
was a tiny brown tabby sitting so still in the leaves that I didn't even see
her. She blended right in. She was so cold & wet & could barely make a
sound. I put her in a carrier wrapped in a towel & met some other volunteers
who took her to the emergency vet.
She was so cold her temp didn't even register. She was FeLV positive & had
severe ulcers in her mouth. The vet estimated her to be about 2 years old
though she looked like she was only 3 months old. After some time trying to
raise her temp they determined the best thing was to euthanize her. Her
heart was barely pumping.
I named her Lola so she would have a name before going over the Rainbow
Bridge.
It is so sad to think how long she may have been there & how many people saw
her & just kept going without a second thought. What a sad story. Even
sadder because I know she is just one of many who meet their end this way.
At least she had a name :(

Hi all,

I'm taking some time off from rescue due to my husband's illness. He has
liver failure and is not a candidate for a transplant. He has been
hospitalized 2 times this month and once last month he was placed into a
skill nursing facility since the 18th of February after the first trip to
the hospital.

He is in the end final stage of his disease his liver has stopped working.

Can die at any given time. He is being given all the pain meds he wants for
comfort so he will most likely fall asleep an never wake up again.

I want to make myself available at all times for him.

He is only 64 years old... I know to some of you that may sound old but it
isn't really.

Hospice has been part of this as well to help me cope with all of this.
Hospice is available to me 24 hours a day.

Sincerely,

Terrie

I Am Always With Her

And God asked the feline spirit,

"Are you ready to come home?"

"Oh, yes, quite so," replied the precious soul, "And, as a cat, you know I
am most able to decide anything for myself."

"Are you coming then?" asked God.

"Soon," replied the whiskered angel,

"But I must come slowly, for my human friend is troubled For, you see, she
needs me, quite certainly."

"But doesn't she understand?" asked God, "That you'll never leave her?

That your souls are intertwined. For all eternity?

That nothing is created or destroyed? It just isforever and ever and
ever."

"Eventually she will understand," replied the glorious cat, "For I will
whisper into her heart that I am always with her, I just amforever and
ever and ever."

I was supposed to have a new FeLV kitty "Studs" aka "Stud Muffin" last
night, but the lady who was transporting him left him in a carrier in her
carport with no food or water all day. I live in Atlanta & it has been hot.
He had to be treated for severe dehydration & is currently at the vet. They
also discovered he had a severe heart murmur, so they are going to check to
see if that can me managed with meds or if it is too late. He is apparently
a total love bug. My favorite kind of cat - big black short haired cat with
green eyes.

I've never had adults with no symptoms, only a kitten that died years ago.
Eliot Spitty is about 5 yrs old, and Mr. Tux about 6 yrs old. I wonder how
that will work out in the coming years - they get supplements, good food,

One thought process that I've run into is that a healthy adult cat

with the FELV virus without acquiring it.

I can't see that vaccinating them at this point would be of value.

My little Scrappy boy was coming to the end of his fight, I only had him for 8
months when he walked into my home and was already in bad condition, hence the
"Scrappy" name, I didn't think he was going to live 1 month. at that time.
Though I should have named him Angel for all the love he gave me, he'd started
responding to Scrappy so I kept calling him that.

I've had plenty of cats in my lifetime, not often do they care for face to face
contact with people, but he'd look straight into my eyes lean forward and rub
his cheek on mine, even placing his paws on my chest to stabilize himself when
reaching for me (sometimes I wouldn't realize right away what he was doing).

The vet said he was 8 years old, so he must have contracted FeLV as an adult.

He'd stopped eating, had labored breathing and had taken to hiding. His sunken
eyes lost any indication of light and so we stopped any more injections or
treatments and I had to have him laid to rest today.

Thank you for reading, and for all the information and support I got from this

week and was having spasms that were making it very difficult for him to
eat, drink or even to stand. He has been very unhappy and scared all week
long.

When I took Tweezer in he was extremely malnourished and had worms, ear
mites, goopy eyes and an upper respiratory infection. As his health
improved he became such a happy cat! He was so happy to be alive, he always
wanted to play and be loved. This is a you-tube link to a video I took of
him a few months ago. He would come to me and ask me to come and play with
him and then lead me to the toys.

since Dec. 2 when he had his bloodwork done and Dr. Jen said he should NOT have
been alive. His blood cells barely existed but yet he was SO full of life
still. She sent him home with me and told me to love him to pieces cause she
would be amazed if he makes it another week Well he proved to be a miracle
cat for 42 days. But when he stopped wanting to eat and stopped giving momma
his headbutts that won me over and convinced me to adopt him 4 1/2 years ago ,I
knew I had to let him go before he crashed.Very hard night but relieved he is
no longer sick.I love you my beautiful boy...

Perhaps there are different protocols for different situations, but when we
were giving our little ones LTCI, we were directed by our vet (who had
spoken with the lab techs with LTCI) to give it sub-q.

hi Andy,

great, thanks that does help.  Sounds like it's intravenous, aka in the
vein, so I would not be permitted/able to do that.  Things like the pepcid
or sub q fluids are in the skin, so the pet parents are allowed to do these,
if they are willing.

Guess that crosses Whimsy off the list since taking him to the vet gives him
flashbacks!

thanks, again, Andy!  Aggie is lucky to have you.

Hi,

The LTCI injection that Aggie gets are given in her hind leg area.  Not up
on the medical lingo--but it looks just like a regular vaccination type
shot.  It is not given intravenously, or under the skin like fluids.  Hope
this helps.

My foster Boo lost her battle with FeLV last night. It was discovered she

Boo was so shy with the other cats, but just loved attention from her human

She left way too soon.

Hello everyone:

We haven't posted much on this list for awhile since Spanky was diagnosed
with cranial mediastinal lymphoma. It is with a broken heart that I am
posting to say that Spanky lost his battle with FELV and lymphoma on New
Year's eve day. He had a seizure earlier in the week after taking an
appetite stimulant and things went downhill this past week and his
phosphorous was so low the vet said they had never seen a cat with low phos
like this, and he developed severe non-regenerative anemia. His type of
lymphoma was fast growing and he wasn't able to have a chemo treatment for
weeks either.

Thank you so much to everyone on this list, your kitties, your angels for
all the help and support and love you've shown to us. You were an absolutely
wonderful support network. Without this group we wouldn't have tried the
LCTI imulan, interferon or the many supplements we learned about like
Transfer factor etc.

I wish all of you the best in 2011 and beyond and will purray your furbabies
stay as healthy as they possibly can.
We send purrayers and healing thoughts to all of you.
Thanks again

Subject: [Felvtalk] update on Spanky - chest fluid

Hi everyone:

I was able to get Spanky in to the internal med specialist/oncologist
this morning. She reviewed his xrays and did an ultrasound and said
Spanky has a  mediastinal 3cm mass in front of his heart.  This is what
is causing the fluid. She said there isn't that much fluid actually it
is more the mass pushing on everything.  They offered to drain the
fluids but she didn't think it was causing any major distress at the
moment. She said the mass was not consistent with what lymphoma looks
like but was more globular and they could take a sample and send it in
but I elected not to put him through that. If it is a tumor, it is a
tumor.

She said I can give rutin but she didn't think that would help
this type of fluids. she recommended I stop giving him immune support
and give prednisolone to try to shrink the mass and give him some breathing
room.
I know about all the issues that come with giving him pred being felv
with no immune system but my gut says try it. She said if I didn't try
it, he could have a few days and more fluid, if I try it and it works
and offers him more comfort for now great, if I try it and he gets CHF,
he can be tapped or theb we know it just may not work.  In any case, I
didn't get him tapped and will just have to see how he'll do on the
pred.

Also I could do the coq10 still.  She said his heart looked good on the
ultrasound but of course I have
to watch his breathing. He was diagnosed as early-HCM and last
ultrasound he had showed no change in the status so I have fingers
crossed.  If I don't try it, I think he will have only days.  If I do
try it and it works he will have a bit of quality maybe. If I try it
and he goes into CHF I know he has hours.  Either way I think it is all
a crapshoot at this point.
Thanks to everyone on the lists for support and advice.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Aww Geez-Murphy's starting to crash-vet visit today

This is the craziest roller coaster!!! Geez-Sunday Murphy was a busy bee, all
happy and jabbering up a storm. He was finally feeling better with a week of
Lysine under his belt and the sneezing and sniffles were subsiding. Yesterday
he
was fairly quiet but I thought he may have done too much the day before. Last
night he did not eat, went into the spare room and laid on the floor in the
dark. Not his style, normally he's nearby. This morning he laid in the kitchen
until he got his meds, then didn't want to eat. I was able to call the vet from
work and get him in this afternoon. We just got home. His PCV dropped 10 pts to
28 and may be even lower because he's a bit dehydrated. We will bump the
Procrit
up to 2x a week and increase the iron caps to every night instead of every
other
night. Maybe we lowered the dose too quicklyhe began the end of July with
his first crash at 3x a week with the Procrit, then we dropped it to 2x-he
bounced back so well that we dropped him to once a week when his HCT got to 38
two weeks ago. His lungs still sound good, but breathing is a little labored
from being anemic. Ultrasound showed a little fluid around the heart, but
nothing like the fluid in his chest in July and August, temp is normal, eyes
clear. So please friends, more little purrayers for my bestest buddy!! Alice
and the kiddos!

(after2 weeks of dripping and sneezing)

It's been a rough two weeks with poor Murphy and his drippy and sneezy nose.
He
got so lethargic and became congested in the nose that by mid-week he wasn't

eating much. I started him last Sunday on the Lysine. He will not eat
anything
with Lysine added, nor will he go near those expensive Lysine treats that I
bought at the vet's office. I didn't try it in the water because I have
water
all over the house 2-3 dishes for him and Rosie and also a 5 gallon water
dispenser for the 3 Australian Shepherds that co-rule our home. The cats
drink
out of it also. I put the powdered Lysine into the #3 gel caps that I get
from
my vet. I think I went overboard the first day-gave him 2 in the AM and 1 in
the
PM-u oo-he had the runs the next day-poor boy was dripping outta
both
ends. Not a fun clean up when you have a fluffy cat!! I called the vet and
they
said I could try saline spray and/or a mild Afrin spray for his nose-steam
(he
already perches on the toilet seat every night while I shower, so I turned
the
fan off to keep the steam in the room). So then I disassembled all the gel
caps-one had doxy and cypro and the other had the lasix and pred. I filled
all
the empty space in the caps with Lysine and reassembled them. So maybe he
was
getting 3/4 to a whole caps worth of Lysine 2x a day. On Thursday I gave him
his
LTCI and Procrit injections-he's once a week on each. He was still sleeping
alot
Friday, but his nose was less drippy and he seemed brighter. Today he is
following me all around the house and is more involved and talking again.
Oh-another thing I tried, on Wednesday I diluted some Afrin nasal spray with
2
parts saline spray and gave him a few squirts into the snoot- He went into 4

wheel drive trying to escape! He was not a happy kitty at all, so it may
have
helped for a short while, I only did it once. Thank goodness he is such a
forgiving soul. He is feeling much better today, hardly any sneezing and
barely
any drips. He was jabbering away in the kitchen this morning, sitting on his

little throne (I have a little plastic step cuz I'm short. It's in the
corner of
the kitchen and he claims it as his throne.) He wouldn't shut up until he
and
Rosie got their 1cc of Interferon and he got his meds, 3 capsules. He sits
and
waits for them, then when that's done, he expects fresh wet food!
Anyway-that's
our little update-I am a believer in the Lysine now, but it takes a little
time
to knock out the Herpes virus that we think flares up whenever his immune
system
is low. Doe anyone know how long he can be on it? Alice (Rosie and Murphy

too!)

My Chloe died today - she's a gray and white FELV kitty, a lovely and
sweet kitty. I got her in Sept 2005, from a lady in Oklahoma named
Jennifer. Jennifer had been a vet tech, and had FELV cats, but when
her baby developed serious problems and she needed to pass her specia
needs cats on to someone else, and I took them.

One by one they have passed on. Chloe was the last - she was 15 or
16, claws had grown out, and she was having some kidney problems.
Fall is so dry, it seems to be hard on kidney cats.

Chloe was a sweetie and had a soft and gentle passing. I kept
covering her and trying to keep her hydrated and warm, but she said no
mom, I don't want the cover on me. Sleep soft sweet Chloe.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Aggie Introduction Part 2

Our story continues with Aggie introduction, part 2..

At this point, I would have chalked the seizure up to the mirtaziprine if it
wasn't for the fact that the day before we gave her the drug, Aggie was
meowing very loudly and had thrown up a bit of a clear liquid. While my
wife didn't see it, she wasn't covered in drool and wasn't disoriented like
after the two known seizures. So, we really don't know what happened, but
suspect it was a milder seizure type incident, and the mirtaziprine made
everything worse. My vet, nor the vet I consulted with at UC Davis, thinks
the mirtaziprine was the major cause, though they did admit that it might be
what triggered the grand mal, and the later, smaller seizure. So, to be on
the safe side, she has been on phenobarbitol for about a month now, with no
further seizures (my wife is home with our 3 month old baby, so she would
know). The first three weeks on it were rough--sluggish, lots of sleeping,
and incoordinated with weakness in her hind legs. (Cat, not the wife, for
those of you still reading!) As of now, she is pretty much back to normal,
with just a little residual weakness. Nowhere near where it was, though.

At present, still getting interferon every day, reloaded her with LTCI
weekly for three weeks, and now moving back to what had become the sweet
spot of every 2 weeks (next shot is this Saturday) and hoping for the best.
When we next test her blood in a few weeks, we might see if we can screen
for toxoplasmosis and cryptococcus (I know I misspelled this!) but didn't
have the cash to do it the first time around. Another possibility is that
she might have been exposed to insecticide, as we had the outside of our
home sprayed for wasps a month or so ago. The day of the first "incident"
it had rained, and she was sitting for most of the day at the screen door
looking out into the yard. She was sitting over the door jam (but still
behind the screen, mere inches from an area that had been heavily sprayed,
as it was a problem area, and the recent rain could have easily washed some
of the toxins through the screen for her to breathe or even lick.

Could have gotten to her paws, and she could have licked them--I don't know.
Other possibilities are of course, a brain tumor, the FELV crossing the
blood brain barrier, lymphoma of the gut that had metastatized (probably
misspelled this one too) into her brain but avoided the lungs and hasn't
swelled up her lymph nodes enough that the vet can feel, or the
aforementioned poisoning, crypto, and toxoplasmosis. Our other cat, who
has lived with us for five years (and is FELV negative but vaccinated) was a
cat that settled on the front porch of the house we had just moved into.
So, it is possible he brought it in, but her immune system was strong enough
to deal with it for 5 years.

At this point, Aggie seems happy, weight is alright, appetite is good, and
her zest for life is apparent. She doesn't mind being around the baby at
all, and we are trying to make every day a party for as long as we have her.
She is the protypical cat, in that she is alternatingly spunky, sweet, and
antisocial and loves to chase my wife's hair clips all over the house.
She'll ignore almost every other toy, but not those hair bands.

Our FELV negative boy--Crookshanks, is the sweetest animal known to
humanity. He loves the baby, and (supervised of course) will sit with her
and occasionally nuzzle her feet. He will sit on the couch above me as I
hold the baby, and groom my head with his tongue. He does the same to my
wife, if he isn't in her lap. He would love to groom the baby too, but that
is a bit much!

So-that is one long introduction! In all likelihood, we are on the downhill
slope of our time together, but who knows-she is a spunky girl and we've
been lucky to have her for so long. I'll keep you posted as we go through
the rest of our journey together. Even though we never met, all of you have
given me so much hope and inspiration. To those of you who have lost cats,
my deepest condolences--and know that I will continue to send good thoughts
and purrayers, as Alice likes to say, your way.

Peace,
Andy

Another Murphy relapse...poor boy is all congested and sneezy with a URI, he
began with light sneezing earlier this week, I gave him a PennG shot Friday
night because he had sneezed so much that he was getting bloody droplets. Now
he's really getting plugged up. I called the vet to see about reducing his
prednisolone dose because steroids suppress the immune system. He's been on
Lasix and Pred for 3 weeks since his diagnosis of Lymphoma. We are cutting him
down to 1/2 from 5mg 2x a day to once a day. I have put some L-Lysine powder
into gel caps because he will not eat it in his food nor eat the very expensive
Lysine treats we tried in the past. Seems the Lysine is supposed to help keep
the herpes virus (viruses in general) from replicating. This flares up every
time his immune system is low and he ends up with upper respiratory problems. I
know he's not feeling well because I've waken up with him snuggled with me on
the bed for the last 2 mornings. He normally doesn't get on the bed, he likes
to
sleep by the open slider screen door. I am still optimistic because his
breathing is still better, hopefully the fluid is still gone from his chest
area, he was in for his check up a week ago and the vet was impressed with how
clear his lungs sounded. Maybe he picked up a bug from the exam room-he was
wandering on the floor, my fault for letting him move around. He's such a
people
person, he likes all the people at the vet clinic and wants to see what they
are
doing. I hope the Lysine helps soon. They said if he's still congested, we can
try a mild Afrin nasal decongestant. He's not that bad yet, I don't think, just
somewhat depressed. Not eating as much, but still eating the AD and all the
gravy from the fancy feast plus some dry food. I know some may be tired of
hearing about Murphy, but I think it may help to keep hope alive, he keeps
bouncing back since the end of July when he became so anemic that by the first
of August I had to syringe feed him for a few days. He is on Procrit now just
once a week instead of 3x a week. Please, purrayers help!! Alice

We just got back from Murphy's vet check. The end of July, he was
crashing
with anemia-(in office PCV 18) HCT 22.3 RBC 3.5 HGB 5.1 even his Absolute

Reticulocyte count was 35200 and the lab notation said a count of over 5
was
evidence of regenerative anemia-which he was below that level. Our vet had
us
give him Procrit 3x a week, Doxy, Cypro and an iron supplement. He was
getting
Interferon 2x a day and we bumped the LTCI to every 2 weeks. He rebounded
from
that-in 2 months he went to HCT 38.7 RBC 6.48 HGB 11.6.
Then 2 weeks ago he seemed to be breathing really fast-I took him in
and
his lung sounds were raspy and an ultrasound showed lots of fluid pockets,
so
much that she couldn't see his heart or lungs-she suspected Lymphoma-sent us

home with Lasix and Prednisolone to add to his meds 2x a day, lowered the
Procrit to 2x a week and we bumped his LTCI to once a week. Dawn on this
list
said Rutin helped-I immediately went to the health food store and bought the

tablets and a pill grinder and put the powder into #3 gel caps and gave him
2 a
day. She thought that he may not make 2 weeks judging by the fluid and how
much
trouble he was having with his fast breathing-it's 2 weeks today and his
lung
sounds are good-the fluid is 99.5% gone!!! His gums are still nice and pink.
We
did not do a CBC, but the in office PCV was 36!! I told her about the Rutin
and
she was impressed (thank you Dawn!!!) and said that they had used it for
other
conditions, but didn't think of using it on FeLV cats-now she will!! We will

stay on the same meds for now but drop the Procrit to only once a week since
he
seems to be regenerating now.
I am so grateful for this list and all of the selfless people out there
trying to give these kitties a good life, no matter how short. I have
learned so
much from all of you and I am no longer afraid to ask my vet questions and
to do
what I feel is good for my babies. We are all in a limbo trying keep our
cats
healthy and happy. This disease is horrible-we lost the 4 brothers a year
agoI was not ready to lose Murphy-he is such a happy and silly cat-he's
a
poly with 3 thumbs-he goes click click when trotting down the hallway and
acts
more like a puppy than a cat. He's not a lap cat, but is right there and
likes
to lay nearby and reach out and keep a paw on you-just likes to touch. He
and
Rosie automatically come into the kitchen morning and night and wait for
their
meds-she is just on Interferon and LTCI monthly-her HCT was 44.7 a few weeks

ago. Our vet said to come back in a month for CBCs!! Purrayers and positive
thoughts-at least today.Alice and the furry cats that own us!!

Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Trying to do the right thing for Avis who is FeLV+

I am a new member to the FeLV talk site, so please pardon me if I am not
following the correct protocol.
We found the cat on our doorstep. My daughter found him there when she came
home from the high school homecoming football game Friday night. It was
starving, and she could not let is suffer. She took it into our garage and
fed it. I told her we could let it stay in there the night, but explained to
her cats wander, and we need to let it go in the morning to see if it would
find its way home. Well, it obviously had no place to go and spent the
entire day in our bushes. That evening, it was crying at our front door to
come in the house, so we decided to put him up in the garage and give him
some food(that poor thing was starving to death). We thought possibly it had
a micro chip, so we opted to take it to the vet (he had no chip). We had him
vaccinated with all his shots, tested for disease, worms, parasites, ticks,
etc (yes, we invested a few bucks...). He is a completely healthy +/- 1 year
old with one exception; is has is it tested positive for stage 1 FeLV. The
vet gave it some sort of immunization and was optimistic it could test neg
when re-tested again, and did not recommend putting him down.

Our problem is we really cannot keep it long term. I've posted signs in the
neighborhood, went door to door, contacted I can't tell you how many
different rescue services, organizations, and people. Our guess was he was
dumped in our neighborhood. I know that if we call our local animal control
(MADACC), having tested positive for FeLV, they will put him down
immediately. He is still a healthy young cat, and he deserves a chance at
life.

He is an extremely friendly cat that likes to sit in your lap. It has no
fear whatsoever of our dog, does not even raise a cackle. He wants to come
in the house so bad, and it is tough to sit and listen to him cry to come
in. But, we feel staying in the garage is better than the bushes, or
euthanization.
Please, I need help. This is tearing me and my family apart inside. If you
anyone who can/would like a loving cat, please let me know.

Brian J

My sweet, beautiful little Cheshire crossed the rainbow bridge last
Wednesday
night.  She had only been sick for less than 10 days.  She was on
antibiotics
and some pred for 10 days for gum problems.  I was going to schedule her
for a
cleaning in a few weeks, but her health seemed to decline a few days after
that.  She started hiding under the bed, and not eating, when seh came out,
I
saw a growth on her throat area, adn took her to the vet.  They weren't sure
if
it was a abcess or worse. I took her back seveveral times over the course of
6
days, she had to be given fluids through IV, and I syringe fed her.  I've
never
been through anything like this before.  I was praying for her.  On
wednesday
they told me they couldn't do surgery to remove the cyst 'cause she was so
anemic and her blood count was so low, it looked like she had leukemia.  The

only thing to do was bring her home or try to get her more help at the vet
hospial where they have cancer specialists for a transfusion.  I brought her

there.  They had an extensive list of treatment for her, and costs.  It was
stressful.

I gave them permission for treatment and a deposit before they could do
anything.  They told me she started to go into distress when put in the
Oxygen
tank and tube, I wanted them to do whatver they could to help her, and
Cheshire
blinked at me when I was in the room with her right next to her.  She wasn't

really blinking before that as whe had a tube in her mouth that was helping
her
breath.

This was so painful for me.  Her heart gave out, and that's how she went.  I

don't know if anyone on here has been through anything like this, but I've
wondered if by brining her to that hospital and trhing to get here more help
to
stabilize her for a transfusion caused her more distresss that lead to her
passing?  I've talked to the doctors who told me no, that didn't do it, she
was
just very sick,a nd even if i'd brought her home, she would haev
onyl survived a
few days or 24 hours.  I even had jsut bought the Mega C plus which I had
heard
good things about reversing felv.

I told her how much I love her and she knows that until I see her again.

Charlie was a little Flame Pt. Siamese mix kitten with Medium super soft
hair. He was a joy to have around & purred constantly. Charlie
lost his battle with FeLV this morning. He had been going down hill for
a week or so, but had a good night last night where his rescue mom got
to visit & he ate almost a whole jar of baby food. This morning,
however, he hardly ate anything, even with an appetite stimulant. His
3rd eyelids were up & he would have to rest after walking only a few
feet. He was not in my life for long, but he made a big
impression on me & his rescue mom. We love you little boy!You can see pics
of Charlie on the FeLV Cats FD page at: http://tinyurl.com/27gdqas

Another hard hit for us at Sids yesterday.
Princess Jellee came to us back in May after losing her home due to her dad
remarrying and moving in with un cat friendly dogs, this after losing her
human mom 5 years ago. The second I saw this beautiful ladys face I fell in
love with her and my heart broke for her losing SO much. But my heart is
happy to have loved her for the too short of time we had her at Sids.I will
ALWAYS love you Bug.
Spud was a magnificent cat with the cutest head tilt.He had the chance of a
home before he left this world, but ghe NEVER left our hearts at Sids. Spuddy
buddy was a great boy.I love you Spud. :(

Tiger didn't have FeLV, but he passed away last night, much too soon. He was
thirteen. I'd had him for three years.  He was always a gentleman & a
loving, sweet boy. Three weeks ago we went to the vet. Something was wrong;
he was sluggish and not eating well. It turns out he had a large abcess in
his throat. The abcess was lanced, a whole lot of dead tissue was removed,
we were sent home with antibiotics and everyone thought things would be
fine. They weren't - there was a second vet visit last Monday, the abcess
was drained again & he was given more fluids. Tiger was hospitalized this
Monday. The abcess wouldn't clear up, and even though he was given a
stronger antibiotic he just couldn't fight the infection. I visited him
yesterday and he ate for me and purred and purred. I didn't want to get my
hopes up too high, but I still wasn't expecting my vet to call this morning
& give me the news that he'd died. I thought maybe we had a little bit of a
chance. It turns out that Tiger had a hole in his esophagus; he must have
ingested something that cut him. I would give anything to have him back with
me.
I wish I had taken him in sooner. He'd been quiet this summer, and not
sleeping with me at night like he normally did, but everybody was quiet this
summer because the house was so warm. Nobody else was snuggling with me on
the bed either. I didn't pick up on the little signs that he wasn't feeling
well. If I had, he might still be alive today.

Usually, a transfusion with un-typed blood can be done once, but there is a
risk. If the blood is typed and a matching blood used, the risk is very
slight.

Re: [Felvtalk] Lymphoma/Brain Inflammation, etc.

2010-08-23 Thread Sara Kasteleyn
Tracey, I am so sorry to hear this. Each of us needs to make our own
decisions about this, so I'll share our story.

Last July (2009), my husband and I adopted two beautiful Bengal kittens,
brother and sister. They were extremely unsocialized, so we worked with
them for several months before they would let us handle them at all. When
they reached six months of age, we took them in to be spayed/neutered, and
at that time it was discovered that they were both FeLV+. One of the first
things I did was to search for this list and thank heaven, you all are here.

Taj, the male and 18 months old, started having difficulty breathing in
mid-July 2010. We took him into the vet for tests, and discovered a massive
tumor pressing into his lungs. We were give the option of chemo and other
treatments, but opted to let him go, as he was in obvious distress.

Several weeks later, we took his sister Rani in for an exam. I had felt a
lump in her lower abdomen, and although she was showing no signs of weight
loss or a decline in appetite or energy level at that time, we wanted to
check it out as quickly as possible. She also has developed lymphoma, this
time affecting her kidneys. They are about 1.5 times the size they should
be. Again, we were offered the option of chemo, but decided to go with
palliative care. She has been on 5mg of pred twice a day for three weeks
now. It is likely this sweet girl will join all our other precious babies
at the Bridge very soon. Given the FeLV+ status, we can't justify putting
her through the trauma. We had taken another cat (no FeLV issues) through
chemo for a stomach tumor several years ago, and it took such a toll on her,
on us, on our financeswe bought her perhaps 6 months of diminished
quality of life. In retrospect, we did it for ourselves, and not for her.

I do know that some cats respond very well to chemo, so please be open to
others' advice on this issue. It's just that our experience has not been so
positive, and you're climbing a pretty big hill with the FeLV+ issues.
There are so many on this list that will know specific questions to ask
regarding the specifics of her blood work and other chemical levels that
might work in Vixen's favor. I hope so. I'm also happy for her that she's
had 10 years, hopefully most of them with you.

My heart goes out to you as you face this difficult decision, Sara

My 10+ yo cat, Vixen, now has FeLV+ spinal fluid and brain inflammation
which is causing head bobbing and weakness/uncoordination in the back legs.
The most likely scenario is now lymphoma. She has always been very robust
and healthy (and pink) even though being diagnosed with FeLV as a kitten.

Now, this.

She is still eating good although she has lost a little weight -- she still
likes to be around me and the other cats, but... I have an apptmt with the
oncologist next week, and just don't know whether to treat or to do simply
pallative care. I know cats can respond well to chemo, but my other cancer
cats did not have FeLV. So I was looking for any ideas, suggestions, etc.,
that folks might have.

She is still on some antibiotics while we wait for final reports on several
infectious diseases but the prelim reports have showed no infectious
diseases. She is also taking an anti-inflammatory dose of pred.

Wolfie left us today after a long battle with leukemia. I took him in 6
years ago after he was found in a pole barn and was going to be put to sleep
after testing positive. I still remember going to see him for the first
time. He had cuts under his eyes and looked so sad. I couldn't possibly
resist even though my husband is horribly allergic to cats. Wolfie thrived
in our home and was a joy to live with for the past 6 years. The horrible
sores under his eyes went away and he grew to be one of my biggest boys. He
was always a momma's boy and spent hours and hours on my chest purring and
kneading daily. Even when I was pregnant, he spent every night on my belly.
He was the most opinionated cat I've ever had and he insisted on his way at
all times but it was an honor to know him.

He was diagnosed with non-regenerative anemia on my b-day last year and has
graced me with almost another year to enjoy him. I'm so grateful for that
time with him. He has fought for the last year with such strength, courage
and amazing determination. However, he decided today was the end of the
fight. I wouldn't expect anything less from him. My favorite number is 23
(hence my e-mail address awilkins23) and while it's a sad day, I'm glad that
I will think of Wolfie with wonderful memories every time I see that number.

Thanks for all the advice and support that I've been given while trying to
help Wolfie beat this disease.

Amy

All of your messages touched my heart and brought tears, as I see that there
are so many other caring, loving people out there.

I buried her and put the name 'Lovey' (as I had never had a cat named that)
in marker on plastic over her before I filled her grave...Thanks, she
deserved a name. 'Edith' my 18 year old grey and tan calico sat along side
as I buried her. (She had come up on the porch when I found the kitten and
was keeping her company until I found her.)

Please don't condemn anyone for this kitten's situation, because someone
cared enough to bring her to me to try to help her. We live in a rural area
that has hit 17.9% unemployment in this economy and has over a 30% poverty
rate. I do a lot of free emergency work for horses, cats, and dogs and
whoever it was at least knew that I would try to save her. I just wish they
would have brought her sooner or left me a note telling me how and when the
trauma to her head had occurred (animal attack, vehicle, abuse, etc.) It
would have given me an advantage in successful treatment.

Again, thank you all so much for your kind words (they eased my pain) and
caring so deeply for the wellbeing of the animals.

My sincere thanks,

Karen,

This story broke my heart, as I'm sure it will with everyone who reads it.
Besides the joy in my heart knowing of your loving care for her, and that she
knew that love before her life was extinguished, it gives me even more comfort
knowing in my heart that God has reserved a very just and absolute punishment
for the person who committed this act of cruelty, if that was in fact what it
was. If it was a vehicle, then that is the unfortunate harsh reality of stray
animals, but certainly no less devastating. God is smiling having witnessed
your act of love and kindness. I'm smiling too. :)

tremendous swelling to the right side of her head (this had not happened

Rocket had a bad week. She had gotten another Immunoreglin shot last Monday.
It didn't seem to help her at all. She just wasn't interested in eating
except for a little kibble. I tried several times to syringe feed her but
she got so upset. She would start panting like she couldn't catch her
breath. We were to go back to the vet today. This morning she wasn't able to
walk very well and was having problems breathing.

So we made that final trip to the vet. Thankfully my dear neighbor drove us.
Rocket normally starts with heavy breathing when we go to the vet. This
morning was worse than normal. She had a small seizure as we were entering
the vet's office and died there in my arms. Her little heart just gave up.
I'm sure she had some type of tumor. Wasn't anemia like Sissy.

She was such a good girl. Never a big love bug but enjoyed playing with the
feather toy and loved her treats. Even this last week she was rubbing my leg
as I was preparing the food plates. Another reason it was so heartbreaking
when she wouldn't eat.

Rocket is my last FeLV baby. I do feel fortunate to have had her for almost
4 yrs. I 1st met her at the dumpsters July '06. She was one of 5 kittens
that would come running when I showed up with food. Spooky vanished but over
time I was able to trap Rocket, Sissy, Daisy and Mae. Rocket and Sissy
became house kitties. Daisy and Mae were much older when I trapped them and
became garage kitties. Now Daisy's babies and these four are gone. Leaves a
big hole in my heart. At least she had a good life and wasn't sick until
these last few weeks.

By sharing her story I am trying to celebrate her life and encourage others
to love their companions each and every day.

Sharyl

Subject: [Felvtalk] Murphy is improving!!

It is one day at a time-the roller coaster is going up this week. Last
Sunday
evening I thought he would not make it through the night. I had spent the
weekend hand feeding and watering him with a syringe-he spent most of the
time
stretched out on the bed. We went ahead and gave him the Procrit (Epogen)
and
LTCI shot-I put them in one syringe so I would only have to give him one
shot.
He didn't even flinch. I thought he'd be gone by morning. I woke up at 5:30
to
get ready for work and I didn't see him on the bed-I went to the kitchen and
saw
both he and Rosie sitting at the open slider door screen (it was a nice cool

evening-we left it open) watching the birds at the feeders!! He came
trotting
over complaining about breakfast-got his meds and ate a decent amount of wet
and
a few morsels of dry. He slowly improved over the week and we had a vet appt
on
Friday (8/13). They did an in house PCV, but it was 19-I think the last time
he
may have been dehydrated-it was 27-28 and the time before it was 18.5
(7/23).
She was happy with the pinkness of his gums-not real pink, but not that
death
white color we dread. His fever was gone, back down to 100.5 from 104.7 the

week before. She suspected he had a herpes virus-he developed a little
lesion on
the top of his nose that has healed. Luckily we picked up our LTCI order
that
day-she said she wanted to keep him on it weekly for now until his numbers
get
back up. I will never try and space the LTCI 8-10 weeks apart. That is when
he
crashed with this anemia. Luckily his last CBC on 8/7 stated that the
Absolute
Reticulocyte count of 70610 shows that it is so far a regenerative anemia. I

have the higher calorie wet food from the vet and he really likes it. We are

taking it a day at a time, but he is perking up-he still sleeps alot-but in
his
usual spots near the desk and he is wanting to stay near us. He isn't up to
leaping for the top of the bookcase yet. When I woke up this morning, he was

jabbering at me, lying between the pillows and watching the young pheasants
eating spilled birdseed from the feeders through the low bedroom window at
the
head of the bed. We watched the birds for awhile, then I got up-he raced to
the
kitchen ahead of me, wanting his breakfast! He got his pills and a good
breakfast. I don't know what tomorrow will bring, but today is a good day.
He is
to stay on the Procrit 3x a week, doxy 2x a day, interferon 2x a day, LTCI
once
a week, and iron capsules once a day. We will give one more PennG shot for
good
measure-they last 5 days. I am grateful for your purrayers-I do believe they

help immensely! I am lucky to have such kind vets-they take us at a moments
notice. I think it helps to have a cat only practice to go to, (Sacramento
Cat
Hospital) plus they are open minded and progressive-they did not hesitate
when I
asked them to order the Imulan after they read up on it. This is a hard
journey
we are all on, we lost the 4 brothers last year despite trying the
transfusion
and other meds. It helps to have people who understand-sometimes even family

members look at us like we are insane-LOL Alice and Glenn - owned by Sweet

Rosie and Mr Murphy!

I am hearing that after Sept or so, the new distributors of the LTCI will only
sell 10 packs-this is going to make it very difficult for most of us to
afford-plus the price went up. I think they are wanting the veterinarians to
carry the product in stock-but I am thinking most won't - Like my vet...I
researched and found the product and begged them to order it for me. Has anyone

A week ago I thought it was over because he was so lethargic and anemic-the vet
visit on 7/23 showed on the in-office test a PCV 18.5% and TP 4.2 (I'm not
totally sure what the TP is). His gums were pale, almost white and he was
barely
eating-it comes on so fast. We started him on Procrit 3 injections a week, doxy
2x a day and an iron supplement capsule 1x a day. Interferon 2x a day. We also
gave both he and Rosie their LTCI injection-it was 4 weeks from the last one.
His lab CBC came back with RBC 3.52 HGB 5.1 and HCT 22.5 Lymphocytes 5. He has
also lost a little over a pound since January, but isn't thin. A week later on
7/29 we took him in for an in-office test (Thursday) his PCV 23% and TP 5.0-he
is acting like his old self again-racing me into the kitchen, standing on his
hind legs and grabbing the cabinet door with his huge paws and banging the door
until he gets a treat! He is back to jumping to the top of the bookcase in the
spare room-the eagle is back! He is still resting more than usual-but isn't
wiped out like before-if he hears something interesting, he just has to see
what
it is-Mr Nosy! I am hopeful that he continues to improve-I don't know what
triggers the anemia, in January his HCT 39.5 HGB 14.4 and RBC 10.85. He is so
good natured-you can give him his shot and pills and he still follows like a
puppy and never gets difficult to doctor. Alice and Glenn humans owned by
Murphy and Rosie!

Re: [Felvtalk] Restricting cat from stairs

2010-07-23 Thread Sara Kasteleyn
First of all, kudos to you for being so careful with him. This can't be
easy for you and from your posts here, I know you've been exploring many
options to assist Wolfie.

Others may have conflicting opinions, but I'm thinking Wolfie will tell you
when he longer feels comfortable on the stairs. There's no need for him to
use them if he doesn't feel confident, as you've made everything available
to him on one level if he needs to stay on one level. My two cents!

Subject: [Felvtalk] Restricting cat from stairs

Wondering if people would offer an opinion. My cat, Wolfie, has rear leg
weakness that is getting progressively worse. He's been seen by numerous
vets and it's not going to get any better. I'm guessing the leukemia is
finally getting the best of him.

Anyway, I'm just wondering how much I should let him do. Initially my vet
said not to restrict him, that letting him use the muscles was good for
them. He is now starting to stumble or sit more often. He doesn't totally
fall over or anything, just gets a bit wobbly or sits down. If he's on
linoleum, he has much less control of his legs. He is still jumping up and
down on my bed, eating, purring, laying on my chest, going up and down
stairs, etc. I don't want him to get hurt and him doing the stairs makes me
so nervous. On the other hand, I don't want to restrict him out of fear. I
talked to the receptionist at the vet and she said if it was her cat, the
stairs would be off limits. This will be so tough because I have 3 other
cats, 1 very shy one that hides in the basement and only comes out when my
son is sleeping. I would have to force her to stay in the basement or out
of the basement (as opposed to having access to the cat door in the
basement door). The last thing I want is to see Wolfie get hurt but I
can't seem to think that if he gets to a point where he can't do the stairs,
he will stop doing them. Is that foolish? He is such an opinionated,
strong-willed cat and I know he will not be pleased if I restrict him in any
fashion.

Oh and he doesn't have to do any stairs. He has food, water, and litter on
all floors. He just chooses to.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Amy

I lost my little Nuj last night. she was a little fighter, but in the
end, she was just asking for help in a different way. She maintained
her sweetness, cuteness, and definitely her dignity to the very
end...And she never stopped eating! I skinny little
piglet...Hemobartonella is so tough on these FeLV kitties, so if you
sense a change in energy in your babies, or a change in behavior
(acting tired or depressed), or a yellowing of the skin (especially in
ears, eyes, mouth, belly, if you can see it), act rather quickly
because the sooner it is caught and treated, the better fighting chance
they have. Nuj is up there playing (and probably fighting and loving
it) with my little Junie. Please say a prayer for them! Thanks, Rachel

Sharmell was a feisty black beauty, she spoke her mind and we listened.

Holden wasa very handsome tiger boy who toughed it out in many ways.He
had awful
mouth issues but he ALWAYS stayed a sweet boy.
I LOVE YOU and will miss you all very much? :(

my kittens a half-teaspoon a day. (My vet wasn't too keen on it eitiher). They
did fine on it, but after we started the LTCI protocol, I dropped the Mega C.
Since we lost Taj this week to lymphoma, am seriously considering adding the
Mega C to his sister's diet from now on. And unless you're a vet with access
to a professional lab and constantly draw blood from your baby
and run blood panels, who knows how well any of this stuff is really helping?
So frustrating!

Thank you very much for the information! Best to you and Maddie,

Sara

Sara,

We bought the powder form of the Mega C Plus, we give her just a pinch in her
canned food every couple of days. Before I started her on it my vet warned me
to start out giving her just a tiny pinch, that sometimes too much can give
them diarrhea or mess with their kidneys. I worked up to a pinch (half of a
teaspoon) and she does fine with that. Hope this helps :)

Fernanda,

I applaud you for taking Little Tommy. I have a FELV+ kitty named
Maddie, she was diagnosed positive by both the Elisa test and the IFa test
in 2008, I tried the interferon for her late 2008 and a little into 2009,
Maddie did not do well with that at all, my vet wanted me to use it 7 days
on and 7 days off and the 7 days she was on were awful, she was very
lethargic, did not want to play or eat, so we quit giving it to her. We
started giving her the Mega C plus by Wendell Belfield mid 2009 and she has
done wonderful with that. She has gained about 6 pounds and runs and plays.
We have not tried anything else for her, other than good food, no stress and
giving her lots of love. Good Luck with Tommy. Please keep us updated on
him.

[Felvtalk] Please light a candle for Taj

2010-06-22 Thread Sara Kasteleyn
Dear friends,

I had hoped to avoid writing this note for a very, very long time. Our
blue-eyed bengal boy Taj is napping at the bridge this afternoon. He developed
breathing trouble over the weekend, and today we discovered that he had a
massive tumor pressing into his lungs. Heroic measures to extend his life
would have been selfish, and given the underlying FeLV+ diagnosis, unlikely to
have improved his quality of life. He was a brave boy, hiding his discomfort
from us for so long. He lived a very short life, only 14 months, but he was
loved and pampered in the extreme.

His sister, Rani, shares the FeLV+ diagnosis. We pray she will be with us much
longer. My thanks to each of you for your fabulous advice and willingness to
share what you have learned along this difficult and often sad path.

Hi Fernanda,

I have included a link from the Imulen (LTCI) website that lists vet clinics by
geographical area using their products, so they must have some familiarity with
FeLV and FIV. http://www.imulan.com/felv-fiv-treatment.html There appear to be
several in the greater LA area. I believe there is one is Sherman Oaks.

Others on the list will be better to direct you to shelter situations. Bless
you for taking this little kitten into your care.

Subject: [Felvtalk] Vet referral and FeLV treatment

Hello all:

This weekend I got lost driving in an industrial part of my town. Suddenly in
the middle of the street, I see a tiny kitten. Luckily I was able to avoid
hitting him, as was the car behind me. I quickly got out of my car and
approached the kitten. Imagine my surprise when he willingly and eagerly came
running right up to me. I scooped him up and continued on my way.

I noticed when I tried to feed him that something wasn't quite right. He kept
falling over and seemed very uncoordinated, even for a kitten. I took him to
the emergency vet where I was told that he had some kind of neurological
disorder that was presenting itself in his legs. Basically he is just going to
be clumsy. The vet said it could be a static problem and not get any worse or
it could be progressive, at which time we would have to discuss other options.

She also recommended the FeLV/FIV test. Sadly, he came up a weak positive for
FeLV. The vet said this may be the cause of the neurological disorder or the
two could be unrelated. Also his pupils were not well dilated (the vet did not
go on to explain what effect that has). When the vet gave me the positive
results, she asked if I wanted to put him to sleep. In the mere 4 hours we had
spent together, this little 6 week old kitten had won my heart and I just
couldn't put him to sleep. Although he is clumsy (it's actually really cute and
I believe he will soon learn to compensate for it), you really don't notice the
neurological impairment unless you are looking for it; and he's happy and
pain-free otherwise.

But of course there is a problem. I have already have a FeLV negative cat at
home and I don't want to risk exposing her. I was able to take the little guy,
who we named Tommy, to my boyfriend's, but my cat and I are moving in with him
in 2 months, so this likely cannot be a permanent home.

So this is why I have turned to this group. I would like to take the time I
have to try to get Tommy in the best health I can. I did some research and
found out about Mega C plus, interferon and LTCI. I would like to speak to
someone in depth about these options, but my vet just doesn't have experience
in this area.

1. Does anyone know a good vet that will help treat the FeLV in the Los Angeles
area - preferable Glendale/Pasadena/the San Fernando valley area.

2. If I am in successful in getting him to the point where he tests negative,
can he stay with my FeLV negative cat. She's older and will likely want nothing
to do with him so I am not too worried about them directly interacting. But I
am worried that they may share toys or bowls.

3. Does anyone know of any rescue organizations that would take on a FeLV
positive kitten?

My boyfriend and I already love and adore Tommy, but we understand that we must
do what is best for him. It's just confusing trying to figure out what that is.
I would welcome and suggestions or advise.

Thank you,

Fernanda

I had to have Daisy, one of my yard ferals, PTS today. She had lost the use of
her back legs. I've had her in a cage for several days trying to see if she
would recover. The vet and I are guessing complications from FeLV. I never had
her tested but she was the momma to Bright Eyes, Houdini, CJ and Mattie all of
whom were positive. Also from the same litter as Sissy and Rocket who did test
positive.

Even though Daisy was a true feral - hissing at me till the end - it
still hurts to much when I lose them. Daisy has joined Mae, Sissy, Bright Eyes,
Houdini, CJ and Mattie my other positives at the Rainbow Bridge.

My FeLV foster kitty Dante passed over the Rainbow Bridge today. I only had
him a few months, but loved him dearly. He preferred human company over
kitty company, but was tolerant of the other kitties. He was a beautiful
grey boy pulled from Animal Control by the rescue I work with. It will be a
long time before I stop expecting to see him in his bed.
He went downhill fast the last 2 weeks. The X-rays done yesterday indicated
he was full of tumors. Luckily he had the lady who originally pulled him
from AC to be there with him. Our group never lets animals be euthanized
without someone from the shelter being there, for which I am very grateful.
It looks like I will be getting a new FeLV kitty from a friend tonight. Not
sure I'm ready.

I had to put my Ellie down this morning. She was only 4 years old and
developed symptoms on Memorial Day and lasted only 4 days. A tumor in her
chest was leaking fluid and squeezing her lungs. I couldn't watch her
suffer any longer so I had her put down this morning. She was a little love
and purred and looked lovingly at me, even at the end. What we could learn
from these creatures could fill volumes. They are so forgiving and don't
ask questions. They just live for the moment and, therefore, don't miss the
moment like we time-crazed humans do. I will remember her always. She was
a beautifully marked little girl with gray and black swirls on her body and
white around her mouth and chin and a butterscotch nose. I am feeling such
guilt, though, that I didn't resort to any treatment whatsoever. My vet
never suggested it but I should have looked into it myself..

Re: [Felvtalk] needing support

2010-06-01 Thread Sara Kasteleyn

Hi Julie.I hope you're feeling a little more upbeat this morning after the
good advice from the list yesterday. We can certainly relate to your anxiety.

We adopted a brother and sister at 12 weeks, and after overcoming some
socialization issues, we took them to be spayed/neutered at 6 months. In the
pre-op bloodwork, it was discovered they were both FeLV positive. We were
heartbroken, but came to this list for the advice you have received on good
food, as little stress as possible, and to be on guard for the first signs of
infection or abnormal health. The only time we have kept them apart has been
immediately after their spay/neuter procedures for about 8 hours. They groom
each other, tussle, and are together generally 24-7...of course, they are both
positive, so this has colored our choice in that regard. However, you'll find
plenty of others on the list who firmly believe they can be together with
negative cats with no bad result.

We have been giving each of our cats periodic injections of LTCI. Some on the
list have used this with good results, others not so much. In consultation
with our vet, and since our cats are asymptomatic, we feel it is having some
positive effect on boosting their immune systems to keep them healthy. Perhaps
they would be this healthy without it...we just don't know. They are now 15
months old and are both doing fine. We feed them a combination of Wellness
dry, wet, and Radcat raw.

Despite all the bad press out there, people here will reassure you that this
diagnosis is not necessarily a death sentence. Check back with the list
often. Many people have used various methods to keep their little ones
healthy, and they are happy to share without thinking their method is the "one
and only". We're all looking for the same answers.

Enjoy them, give them lots of love and attention and try to relax. If you have
not established a good relationship with a vet who can support you, it's a good
time to seek out that relationship.

Very best wishes to you,

Sara

Hi there-

I don't know if this is the right place, but I am hoping for some feedback.
I recently adopted two kittens, a brother and sister. At 7 weeks, I had
them tested for FeLV. The boy kitty is positive but the girl kitty is
negative. Is that even possible? They have been living together for 7
weeks; wouldn't she be positive if he was at this point? I am taking them
both in tomorrow so he can be re-tested with the IFA and she can be
vaccinated. I am absolutely devastated. I am in love with both of these
kitties and am looking for some hope. My boy kitty is active and playful,
though he has had a little diarrhea today and is eating a little less. I'm
totally freaked out. I am keeping the two apart, which is also killing me,
because they are such a comfort for each other. Does anyone know what my
odds are for his second test being negative? Is is weird that she's
negative? If he is positive, do I have to keep them apart forever? If we
have a baby and he is positive, do we have to get rid of him? I can't even
bare thinking of all of this, as he snuggles on my tummy purring while I
type. Any advice, support, guidance is sincerely appreciated.

Just a note to let you know that Tommy lost his battle with FeLV on Tuesday. I
still cannot believe how quickly it took over, and by Tuesday morning he was so
weak and his eyes were so empty. It was like his soul had left his little body.
He was extremely anemic and his liver enzymes were elevated. I do know that

passed away Tuesday morning in my arms as he got the medicine that helped him

I want to thank everyone for the information on this list, because even though

Re: [Felvtalk] Is this a real legit cure for feline leukemia?

2010-05-04 Thread Sara Kasteleyn
We have been using LTCI on our two young cats since October of last year.
They have just had their first birthdays and are asymptomatic. I should
also share they have always been asymptomaticthis is not something that
has come about since using LTCI. Be careful about thinking of LTCI as a
"cure", and rather think of it more as a "treatment aid", which is how the
manufacturers refer to it. Our vet is able to acquire the injections for
about $60 a dose, and she sells it to us for this amount. We give the
injections ourselves. We started with one dose a week for three weeks, then
weren't able to acquire it for three weeks. We started all over at one dose
a week for four consecutive weeks, then once every other week, once every
three weeks, and now once a month. I hesitate to say they are doing well,
as I don't want to invite trouble.but they are.

Hope this is of some help to you, Sara

Laura...you did not do this. Please do not blame yourself.

I'm fairly new to this list and I know others will have better insight than
I. I can only share that one of my two positives "turned blue" under
anesthesia for neutering. In our case, they were able to bring him back
quickly, but I think more animals are lost during spay/neuter procedures
than is common knowledge.

We discovered Taj was FeLV positive in the pre-op bloodwork. His sister,
Rani, also tested positive when we took her to be spayed a week later. She
didn't have the same adverse reaction to the anesthesia as her brother, but
I know that because of his very near death experience, the vet staff was
extremely cautious with her.

None of this helps you with the terrible pain of losing Bridget. I am so
very sorry. She knew she was dearly loved, and you know that all of us
grieve with you.

happened. She declined quickly. I knew she was not going to make it, so we had
a vet appointment for tomorrow morning for her to be PTS. Even a couple of days
ago she was purring a bit and looking for chin scratches and head rubs, but by
the time I left for work this morning I think she hardly knew I was there. When
I arrived home this evening she was lying on her side, barely breathing. I held
her on my lap for about 45 minutes, just waiting, then she shuddered, my lights
