Sure there are a few more vacuum lines under the hood, but no more than found on 1986- cars. Acceleration off the line is outstanding, the transmission shifts better than earlier cars, and the lower geared rear makes for a better highway cruise. Re: [MBZ] Hi lift jack
The other day I was driving on I-26 here in SC and there was a largish truck, might have been a tractor with a smaller trailer, down in the median all mired up in the muck. You could see where, for whatever reason, it had run off the road then stopped in the muck. There were 2 bubba trucks trying to pull it out, one with a tow strap on the tractor and the other with a tow strap on the truck with the tow strap on the tractor. Both of the bubba trucks were also mired up and nothing had moved anywhere. A total goat rodeo. There was a cop there, looking at all this mess and trying to keep traffic impeded more. I figured it was going to take one of those huge tractor-trailer tow trucks with a 200ft cable to hook on to all of them and yank them out. A Kaleb moment. --R On 3/7/15 4:30 PM, Kaleb C. After a while it because almost impossible after pumping the handle down to get it back up, it kept catching on something. Then on one wheel the plate kept sliding out and I ended up putting a big old dent in my truck. Plenty of choice words were used. Anyway I finally got that pig out of the mud and I am work plumb out. Re: [MBZ] Radio Shack Stores Closing
Many moons ago I worked with this woman, a sales babe (she subscribed to this description and flaunted it, and totally was) was going on one evening at dinner about how she and her husband took showers together but one was always cold because both couldn't be under the shower together. So I was flying back home a coupla days later from wherever this conversation took place, and saw a double shower head thing in that catalog, one shower head was on this long bending arm that could stick out and over the tub or whatever, and the other was where the normal shower head was. So I ripped out that page and sent it to her. She was totally crazy over it, and bought one. At some time later when I saw her again somewhere, I got a FULL report on it. She loved it, and apparently so did her husband. Like they both really loved it. A lot. nudgenudgewinkwinksaynomore --R (SkyMall-enabled Couples Therapist) On 3/10/15 10:22 AM, Curt Raymond via Mercedes wrote: Better not be for $180,000. Sky Mall always had crazy crap like that. [MBZ] OT apropos of nothing, but interesting and I thought good
A guy I have become friends with was quite an agitator back in his day, and continues on now. He turned 80 a coupla weeks ago but still has the fire in him. He was very involved in a strike here in Charleston back in the 60s when black nurses at the hospital were not being treated fairly, and it caused some significant changes not only at the hospital (which are still commented on today by the management) but in the whole city of Charleston. Understanding that this city was ground zero for Secession, and before that the importation of slaves, makes it even more significant in comparison to some other cities perhaps. He and others were arrested multiple times, usually with no particular reason, was just part of the game back then. Bill grew up on this island where I live, and continues to fight for preservation of the island and the Gullah culture that was prevalent for hundreds of years, and is still a part of life here though it is diminishing as the younger people move away. One of the women talks about setting up a school on the island, which was rebuilt a coupla years ago and is an outstanding school now. There is a lot more, but this guy was one of the true heroes (and I use that word very seriously) for the improvement of our society, not just here but in the wider world. Anyway, if anyone has 20some minutes to watch this, it is quite interesting to compare what these folks say and what we hear so much about now. You can draw your own conclusions, but hearing it from some very humble people has more effect I think. I downloaded this and put it on itunes to watch on my TV, if your TV has the youtube app you can find it too. A bit more pleasant to watch sitting in the easy chair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qP9d-uaeXNo --R ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: https://server.secureplusplusfour.net:2083/cpsess595060604/3rdparty/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] OT Another Airbus bores in
The whole flight profile is likely programmed into the autopilot and engaged at some point after takeoff (though I think these planes can take off and land themselves once told to do so by the pilots), so when it reaches cruise altitude it then levels out, engines are trimmed, whatever to maintain proper altitude and speed. It has been noted in other Airbuses that some of the external sensors (angle-of-attack and pitot tube speed sensors) have iced up or quit working, which then buggers the autopilot into thinking that it needs to do something, usually improper. I think that is what happened to the one that crashed into the Atlantic a few years ago, best they could figure. The pilots might not know if the indicators are wrong, and the autopilot is doing its thing, until too late to do anything about it. This one took several minutes to descend though, so one would think the pilots would notice that, but in the Atlantic crash they seemed quite confused and ended up doing the wrong things and flew into the water, somewhat similar situation though I think that one involved some thunderstorms. If a windscreen shatters that could cause all kinds of commotion, autopilot or not. Rapid depressurization, pilots knocked out, they fall on the stick, override the autopilot, who knows, but a Very Bad situation. Air is bled off the compressor stages on the engines to pressurize the aircraft, so the oxygen is coming from the air outside the plane, which is at maybe 1/4 or less of the pressure at ground level. There is supplemental oxygen should the aircraft lose pressurization (the yellow masks) and the pilots have their own supply that should be within easy reach, if they are in a condition to reach their masks and turn on the oxygen. If they get the recorders data they should be able to figure it out. --R On 3/25/15 11:18 AM, Andrew Strasfogel wrote: I have never piloted a plane and am really ignorant about aviation, but here goes anyway: What puzzles me is that this all transpired just as they reached cruising altitude. Re: [MBZ] OT Another Airbus bores in
You can survive quite well over 10k ft, 20k is pushing it though some have conquered Everest 28k ft with no supplemental oxygen. I have trekked at 14k+ ft and spent a couple days at 12k+, it is a challenge but if you are fairly fit you can do it OK, some better than others (the Quechua basically run marathons at 10k+ in 4 hours or so, up and down the mountains on the Inca trail, but they are born there and live their whole lives at high altitude, as do the Sherpas). A bunch of ski resorts are at 10k+ ft at the top, no problem. My wife has a problem at altitude but it has never bothered me other than the heavy breathing to get enough O2. I think the big problem in a plane is rapid decompression which can blast your ears really hard, then confusion, then lack of oxygen if you can't get it quickly enough, plus it is really cold up there if a windscreen blows out, someone could freeze very quickly if that happens -- -40F and 400+ kt is not conducive to life. --R who was once on an Eastern 727 when it depressurized, twice, at not too high an altitude and had No Fun On 3/25/15 12:21 PM, Meade Dillon via Mercedes wrote: At altitudes over 10,000 feet, the air pressure is too low for your lungs to absorb the oxygen out of it, so you can suffocate (three minutes or less). If you have the presence of mind, you can grunt breath, which is too use your diaphragm to try to force the air out of your lungs but hold your breath. This compresses the air in your lungs enough so you can get a little oxygen, but this is a short term fix and I'm sure it becomes less effective at higher altitudes. If the pressurized cabin of the aircraft is compromised, the air pressure inside the plane drops and then your lungs won't work without help. In between normal pressure and pressure so low you can't get oxygen, there are various other nasty things that happen if you are oxygen starved. You will still be conscious and probably unaware, but your brain loses its ability to perform. You lose your ability to solve problems and perform tasks. -Max with one ride in a high-altitude pressure chamber trainer On Wed, Mar 25, 2015 at 11:18 AM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: How does a plane suddnely lose oxygen? In Texas you have the illegals hauling a dozen people who wreck and kill a bunch and no one really cares, Happens quite often. Mostly due to stupidity, which apparently is a constitutional right. Somebody there told me they don't make much off the goods they sell, most of their profit is from the membership fees. I'm not quite sure how that works, I have the Exec membership, which costs like a $100, and I got $78 back this year on the rebate it comes with. They told me when I got it if I don't get the cost of it back they will credit it to me, but I have not gone and asked for it so I don't know. I guess I should try but I never remember to do it. Its a store credit, so not cash, but if you use it then you pay less cash. Costco stuff is indeed of considerable quality and the prices are lower or competitive on value, and if you have any issue whatsoever they will replace or refund no questions asked. Exactly right. And most likely before the cops could show up to do the deed. And most likely saving (my and) other lives in the process. Exactly right. The interesting thing is, most of these random shootings do not occur in places where the perp is likely to face opposition. They have the foresight to select a soft target, and when it is likely the target will not be soft, the perps either don't do the deed, or go somewhere easier. So deterrence works, and self-protection works. I understand that some people just can't grasp or accept the realities involved. Even in places where the gun laws are stringent, wackos find a way, either with a gun or something else. France and the Charlie Hebdo business comes to mind, even the cop did not have a weapon to defend himself and the people he was guarding. Re: [MBZ] Facts -- meenieguns
A friend of mine owned a sporting goods store in MA of all places, and had a firearms sales permit, which apparently included automatic weapons. One night we were socializing and he says he just sold 2 mini-guns to some foreign buyer. These were the things that go like 3000 or 6000 rounds per minute, like mounted on helicopters for hosing down targets quickly. I think they were made by GE or some subsidiary, might have been located in MA, I don't remember. So this was intriguing, turns out his store had the necessary permits for selling and exporting this thing so he was basically just the pass-through on it. I don't recall him ever saying who the buyer was, or if we asked he averred on the identification, which was further intriguing as to who would be buying these, how they had the necessary permits to do so, with the foreign connection, etc. I could see mounting one on the front of the truck. Maybe both. --R On 3/3/15 3:22 PM, G Mann via Mercedes wrote: You are correct. The sale of all new full automatic weapons is forbidden to private ownership since the 1986 law took effect. You do know that the mental health system, such as it was, was dismantled under Reagan because that is what mental health advocates wanted -- they believed that the system as it was violated the rights of mentally ill people by forcing them into treatment or hospitals or whatever, against their will. So Reagan et al. gave them what they wanted, rights for the mentally ill to decide what they wanted or needed. So now we have mentally ill people with their rights who can't get the treatment they need, or who refuse it because it is their right to do so, and live on the streets and damage themselves and others with their freedom. Of course, no one saw that one coming... --R On 3/4/15 5:37 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: Thanks, Grant. I'm pleased to say that they are and have been a contributing member of our society as a result of this and other resources that were available at the time. I work in an urban area where there are many homeless folks. I'm sure some are there because they choose to be, but a fair number of them are clearly in need of mental health services that just don't exist. Was listed $45k or so, I beat on them a bit as it had been there awhile and the weather up there has been bad so they have not been moving iron. I stopped at another dealer yesterday morning on the way to see this one, a very similar car had literally just come in from a Daimler employee, they were fixing yo do the CPO inspection, about the same price. There's one in CO that's nice too, a bit more but 2014. They wanted to send it to me. There's a bunch around similar prices. MB announces a new CpO deal tomorrow. Re: [MBZ] Facts now Fonts now Telling your Benz what to do
So the new MamaML has a deal where you can talk to it and tell it what to do. You push a button on the steering wheel then you tell it to navigate to some address or place you have saved, or change the radio or music on your pod or call someone or do various other things. She has tried it but apparently they don't understand each other too well yet. She finds the soul in the machine to be pleasant enough, however, when it tells her what to do, unlike her views toward me while doing the same. It has also assimilated her phone into it so it can call people or send texts or do other things phone-wise, and apparently can also suck in 10GB or 80GB of music to its memory banks. I find this whole thing somewhat disturbing yet intriguing. It has a rotating pushbutton mouse joystick sort of thing too to whiz around the screen if you don't want to talk to it. The instruction book is about 400 pages long. --R On 3/4/15 7:41 PM, wiltonw--- via Mercedes wrote: I used Dragon Speaking with good results 6 or 8 years ago. Re: [MBZ] Amazon Parts
I have had my wife order stuff from Amazon and get it shipped free in 2 days with Prime, no 10% sales tax. Great deal. I have noticed most of the FLAPs will do something similar, if you find it on their web site and buy it then go pick it up at the store, or have it shipped to the store, but then you have to pay the local tax. Amazon is also quite good from a customer service perspective from what I have experienced. for stuff you don't need right now it's a great deal. --R On 2/22/15 6:07 PM, Dan Penoff via Mercedes wrote: Interesting read: http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/how-amazon-will-slowly-murder-the-auto-parts-stores-1683776505 Dan ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] OT: US oil train safety report from The Associated Press
When we lived in Houston there was a train track across the street behind some houses. At some point the track developed a gap between rails, maybe a half inch or so. You could hear the clack-clack every time a wheel truck ran over it. I went and looked at it one day and the front rail was getting hammered pretty good and flattened out to where there was now not only a half inch gap but a half inch level difference, so the rail was also getting pounded down as the wheels dropped onto it. I went to some meeting about the crossing down the way, and the trains blowing horns, and brought this issue up with the City Powers and the train company guys (the head lawyer of which lived in our little community). They all made Concerned Noises but nothing was done about it. This went on for months. So some time later a bunch of cars derailed and fell over and down the embankment. These were grain cars but ahead and behind them were some sort of tankers. When all the TV and cops and Official People were doing their thing, I went around asking what was in the tank cars, no one knew or no one was saying -- oil, chemicals, gasoline, whatever. I pointed out that it would have been pretty nasty if whatever that was fell over but everyone was acting really weird about it. So then I brought up that the track had been bad for ages, I had told a bunch of people about it, etc. and it got even weirder. I presume there was some sort of investigation by FRA or someone, but no one ever called me or asked about that. It was pretty clear the track separated at that gap and the cars just ran off right past it. We had a huge rat problem, and the rotting grain stunk like crazy for the next coupla months, I and some other neighbors called the TV people again and the train co came out and cleaned up, spread some dirt and deodorizer or soemthing. But no one ever brought up the track maintenance issue... --R On 2/22/15 4:08 PM, Max Dillon via Mercedes wrote: http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_OIL_TRAINS_SAFETY?SITE=APSECTION=HOMETEMPLATE=DEFAULTCTIME=2015-02-22-12-00-23 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. [MBZ] OK What do you think?
I know we are all pretty much cheapasses but wifey wants a new vehicle and I have suggested a GL or ML. (I lean to a GL just because I like bigger but she might prefer an ML size, there seem to be more of them available, a bit less dinero too) She is totally risk averse so I am thinking some sort of extended warranty to go along with a used one, the CPOs have something like that, would have to look into details. I know you can get something from Carmax too. Some of these look decent, coming off lease or something. Loan rates are pretty low too so reasonable to finance a purchase. This is just sort of an initial scouting expedition. Thoughts? Am I stupid for looking at likely headaches? Should I take her to the Frod dealer and look at Exploders? She has a thing about not wanting a jap vehicle, though I think they are all built here now, but a krautkar is OK, which are built here too. I just found these in Charlotte, seems they have a largish selection. I could probably look at Atlanta area too, see what they have there. --R http://www.hendrickmotorsofcharlotte.com/detail-2011-mercedes~benz-gl~class-4matic_4dr_gl450-used-13269971.html http://www.hendrickmotorsofcharlotte.com/detail-2012-mercedes~benz-gl~class-4matic_4dr_gl450-used-13174654.html http://www.mbcharlotte.com/used-Charlotte-2011-Mercedes+Benz-+-GL550-4JGBF8GE4BA685300 http://www.mbnorthlake.com/used/Mercedes-Benz/2011-Mercedes-Benz-GL-Class-73f4b9a10a0a00654f919aa35594caa0.htm ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post. Re: [MBZ] Klunking in the Rear
Put the back up on stands, loosen the diff from its support bracket and let it down a bit (I think with a jack?) which frees up the axles to slide out/in. You need to take off the diff cover to get at some retainer rings in there (quite fiddly, I remember that part!), so make sure you can get the filler plug off first so you can fill it back up after. It is actually not too hard, just fiddly. There are seals too you got to be careful of. The first one I did took a coupla hours then the other side was a lot faster. I vaguely recall the brake rotors have to come off to get the axle out of the axle/wheel carrier/bearing (it was quite a while ago I did so the details are a bit vague). This was on the 123 TD, not sure what your car is but it is probably a similar process if yours is different. There is a procedure in the manual that is fairly straightforward. Not too hard, but you have to get under the car and it can be a bit tight to do it while on your back lifting stuff around and reaching into the diff. Be a good opportunity to refresh the diff lube too. --R On 2/23/15 4:07 PM, Bob Rentfro wrote: So how difficult of a job is that? I reckon you gotta have a lift. Re: [MBZ] OK What do you think?
So what I am dealing with here is she asserted the need for a new car of some sort, most likely SUV or pickup so she can haul bikes and various other stuff that is a mystery to me. I got a $ range and a list of things she DOESN'T want, as below. It has to be reliable or have some sort of warranty to fix anything that breaks, basically she doesn't want to deal with anything automotive-related except to drive it. Most cars these days are fairly reliable it seems, but repair costs would be the killer if something does go wrong. So I started offering some thoughts and she quickly got overwhelmed (she has a hard time with multi-dimensional choices) and said she just wanted me to tell her the best choice. The BMW factory is here in SC, they make the X SUV things, so that was something that had appeal. I suggested a Benz SUV and showed her some MLs and GLs. She thought they looked nice and some of the used ones are in the acceptable price range (interest rates are low, so that helps on price). I was thinking CPO or some sort of aftermarket warranty thing like Carmax offers. I guess the next step is to get her to a dealer or Carmax or something where she can see some vehicles. Maybe even a lease to cover the fixing aspect, but I guess a CPO would be nearly as good. --R On 2/23/15 1:09 PM, Donald Snook via Mercedes wrote: If you can get a certified one, doesn't the warranty increase to 100K? If you want to drive a Mercedes because you like them, appreciate the quality, etc and can afford it, I would think a CPO would be a great way to go. Is your wife the kind that wants a newer car every 5 years or so? If so, the GL or ML doesn't have to last forever and might still be under the certified warranty. If you plan to buy it until the wheels fall off, that's a different story. For S30-40,000 you can buy a very nice SUV of just about any make and probably many are still under original warranty: You can find all kinds of Explorers and even Expeditions with much lower mileage and only 1-2 years old and under factory warranty for the same or probably lower prices. Re: [MBZ] OT Global warming (aka climate change), linked to frigid winter
So, I posed this question to our guides in Patagonia in the Torres del Paine park in Chile. The mountains there are 4000ish feet high which is more than a kilometer, call it 1.5km. They told us the mountains were under a km of ice, so that makes that the ice was 2.5ish km thick (above current ground level, would have been a lot higher when the sea level was lower because of the snow/ice had a lot of water locked up), call it 7-8000 ft thick, could have been quite a bit more. That ice, except for the Great Southern Ice Sheet up in the mountains, is gone and the climate/weather there is sorta like Colorado, warm in summer, cold in winter. The guides were going on about climate change and global warming, so I asked why 2km of ice melted starting 10,000 years ago or whenever -- there were no power plants or SUVs at that time, and humans were just starting to move over to the Americas, and certainly not way down to El Fin del Mundo. They sorta locked up and dropped the subject and I didn't press it. Note that this expresses no opinion one way or the other on the subject discussed below, but I have not seen an answer to this question. I am wondering if global warming climate change disruption also caused the ice age, but it certainly was not anthropogenic. Then if a big volcano or two lets off, well then you got some pretty serious global cooling. --R On 2/23/15 4:52 PM, Andrew Strasfogel via Mercedes wrote: Climate change may be to blame for frigid NortheastPublished: Monday, February 23, 2015 Biting winds and frigid temperatures terrorizing the Northeast can be linked to climate change, according to scientists at Rutgers and Wisconsin universities. In their view, this variability can be linked to more rapid warming in the Arctic in comparison to other parts of the world. It can also help explain the lengthy cold snaps in the Northeast. I have been listening to the inane commentary on NPR about this pipeline bidness. It is quite interesting how the opponents have managed to turn the discussion around aspects that are either 1) wrong, 2) irrelevant, 3) conflated, 4) partially true, 5) idiotic, 6) ignoring certain other factual aspects, 7) all of the above. And the journalists let it all slide without making the interviewees be rigorous in their arguments. It is a wonder to behold, I remember now why I missed sending in some dinero during the begathon the last 3 weeks. So the ML350 has steel and the 430s and 550s and such have the air-ride feature? I thought about a GLK but not sure it would have sufficient room to haul the stuff she might want to haul. She has this elliptical bike thing that is about 6ft long and does not fit in any fashion on a bike rack so has to be loaded in the cargo bay. Would have to do some measuring on an ML to see if that is sufficient, probably so with the second row seats down. --R On 2/23/15 8:30 PM, Jaime Kopchinski wrote: I think you can't go wrong with a 6 cylinder ML with steel suspension. Smaller, sure, but they're very easy to handle, simple and reliable too. I'm on my second one as a company car and like it much more than I thought I would. Is your wife the kind that wants a newer car every 5 years or so? If so, the GL or ML doesn't have to last forever and might still be under the certified warranty. If you plan to buy it until the wheels fall off, that's a different story. For S30-40,000 you can buy a very nice SUV of just about any make and probably many are still under original warranty: You can find all kinds of Explorers and even Expeditions with much lower mileage and only 1-2 years old and under factory warranty for the same or probably lower prices. [MBZ] OT RV bidness
So in my road trip ponderings this past weekend, and in others, I have noticed these big RV dealers here and there along the interstate roads. They have hundreds of buses and trailers parked on a few acres of land. Must be several $millions worth of inventory just sitting there. I wonder how that bidness operates, how many of those things they actually sell new or used or whatever it is the items are. Those big buses must be a coupla $hundredk easy, and those trailers look spendy too. How does anyone make any money on that stuff? Are the markups so high that even with the carrying costs they can make a bit of profit? Do the manufacturers just keep churning these things out and use those dealers for parking spaces? --R (who has little else to ponder on the boring I-26 route) ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com All posts are the result of individual contributors and as such, those individuals are responsible for the content of the post.
