2017-10-05 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
With Amazon Prime you can download music onto your device and listen to
it offline (and movies too) and it is just sorta "borrowed" I guess.

My daughter unit got me listening to podcasts, there is an infinite
variety of stuff out there for free, including back programs of radio
shows.  Some have a bit of commercial sponsorship but it is not really
intrusive.  I recently listened to Crime Town about Providence RI, which
was excellent as I recall Buddy Cianci and his shenanigans, and S-Town
about this small town in Alabama, which is excellent but might not be to
all tastes.  Or local paper has a weekly podcast about the restaurant
scene in town, I downloaded a whole bunch of them and listened to them
all on my road trip in August.

Re: [MBZ] Mini Split HVAC

2017-10-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Well it is all in the unit outside, call it what you want, my guy called
it the condenser unit, and that whole unit has the gas tank and
controller and fans and compressor and whatever else inside the box.
The indoor head unit just blows out hot or cold whenever you tell it you
want hot or cold, nothing but a fan and coil in there (and a drip tray
to collect the condensate in the summer), and some control thingie to
tell the outside unit what it wants and how much to blow the fan and
arrange the louvers.

Re: [MBZ] Mini Split HVAC

2017-10-04 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

I'm not sure I understand that explanation, so I'll throw in my own.

The condenser unit (the outdoor unit) comes filled with gas.  You hook
up your lines to the condenser and the head unit(s), there is a tap on
the condenser to attach a vacuum to.  So you pull the vacuum which
evacuates all the lines and the head units (and hope there are no leaks
or you need to go back and check your connections).  Once you get a good
vacuum then you can open the gas tap on the condenser and it floods the
system with the gas. Check pressures, add more gas if necessary (if you
have extra long lines).  You should be heating or cooling or whatever
you want to do.

My guy put some nitrogen in there at first to see if the system would
also hold pressure, you can test the connections with some soapy water
to see if any are leaking (I had one connection on one of the systems
that did not seat well, could hear it hissing, bled off the nitrogen and
refit it, then pressurized again, it was OK to go), if not then bleed
the N and pull the vacuum.

It is sealed in the receiver.  This is the way all commercial systems

In your case, foe a new one, you only need the last 3 steps.

I”m curious - how are the lines precharged, and how do you pull a
vacuum without releasing the refrigerant?

I could easily do this myself, as I’ve got all the tools. I see a
12,000 BTU 240VAC split for a little over $600. I can justify that.

Yes it is quite easy but on mine unless I had an AC guy do it there was
no warranty coverage on the units.  So I spent the $100 and my guy came
over and spent about 30min pulling down the system, releasing the gas,
and then adding a bit more as I have a coupla long lines.  But it is
easy enough.  You can buy line sets of various lengths, any excess just
coil them up.  My guy told me not to mess with new flares, they never
get right.

The new units come precharged. You should pull a vacuum (and check for leaks)

There are many youtube vidoes on installation but the basic procedure is (1)
drill the big hole (like 1.5 in) through the wall, (2) hang the inside bracket,
(3) unfold the short lines and hand the inside unit, (4) place the outside
unit, (5) connect Freon lines, (6) connect wires, (7) evacuate, and (8) release
Freon (actually R410A).

You'll need a bit of piping and to run your power, you'll need to pay an AC guy
to do the final charging if you want the warranty, or just do it yourself if
not. They are an easy install, basically just cut a small hole in the wall to
run
the lineset and the drain and comm cable, you need power to the condenser
unit from somewhere (mine are 30A 220V). Easy job really.

Re: [MBZ] This car that might be an E dizzel -- IT IS!!!

2017-10-03 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Interesting.  Thanks for the info.  I'm guessing the airbags in 2014
might have been due to a crash, but there is that recall in 98 for
airbags but that was 16yr before.  Car has some bumper damage she says,
not sure if that is related to this rebuilt aspect or what, or something
else done to it.  She did mention too that the steering was loose,
whatever that means, so maybe it is a damaged beater and just treat it
that way.

In any case, with this info, and the girl just wanting to get rid of it
I am thinking $800 max on it, maybe less or take it or leave it, I'm
guessing she'll moan a bit but say OK.  Max and I are going to take a
look at it Saturday.  If I was as cold-hearted as Kleb I would offer $500.

I have no particular interest in the car.  A friend expressed an
interest in buying it for her kid, so I will probably ask her if she
wants the thing but if anyone else has an interest in it either before
or after we look at it, chime in...  I'd rather someone who has at least
a bit of appreciation have it, who knows maybe it would have some easy
fixes to keep it running for a good long time.

9k or 12k BTU units for <$1k

https://www.acwholesalers.com/Ductless-Air-Conditioner-Wall-Mounted-Air-Conditioners/cat1028.ac?mainCat==

You'll need a bit of piping and to run your power, you'll need to pay an
AC guy to do the final charging if you want the warranty, or just do it
yourself if not.  They are an easy install, basically just cut a small
hole in the wall to run the lineset and the drain and comm cable, you
need power to the condenser unit from somewhere (mine are 30A 220V).
Easy job really.

[MBZ] This car that might be an E dizzel

2017-10-02 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
A buddy sent me a msg saying that girl who has the maybe Edizzel for
sale met a guy online, is moving somewhere with him, and is getting rid
of everything and just wants the car gone.  i had sent her a text a
coupla weeks ago about it, never heard from her, so just rang her and
she said she would get a pic of the trunk and the VIN door  plate this
evening and send it to me.  So I can decipher what exactly the car is.

If she is just wanting to unload the thing and run off with this guy, I
think some combination of us could help there.  I'll let y'all know.
Could be a cheap beater, whatever it is.

I have an idea the girl might be a bit of a flake, but I'm not sure why...

I haven’t dug into the console on the 98 yet to see if there’s a third

It's not bad, gets easier as you do it a time or two.

[MBZ] Pulling engine 420SEL

2017-09-20 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I'm getting close to pulling the "good" engine from the 420SEL donor, I
have disconnected and pulled everything from the engine bay that might
be useful (the AC system still held a bit of pressure!).  I have most of
the other stuff knackered too, will finish soon.

Any suggestions for pulling it?  Looks like undo the 2 mounts, get under
and disconnect shifter and whatever around the tranny, flex disk, any
wires and such, then get the crane on it?  I plan to cut off the front
of the frame so it can basically just come up a bit and slide forward,
maybe just roll the car out from under the whole deal.

Coupla other niggly little things it needs but otherwise a nice car
except for a bit of rust starting here and there. Starts right up on old

[MBZ] I am running out of space

but I have a tranny for this, one from one of the cheap 420SELs I

if a Kleb price might get it.  Max maybe you could go take a look at it,
it is right in your neighborhood.

Re: [MBZ] Corvette Was Totaled Because Of One Inch Crack

2017-09-15 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I have a friend, who is probably 80+ now, who had a coupla Corvettes
back in his young stud days, and kept blowing up the engines.  Seems the
valve trains were not up to the goals of the design, so they would let
go during spirited driving.  Unloaded the last one in '67 and bought a
'66 230SL which he still has, and still drives spiritedly with no issues
in the 50 years of ownership.  And, it still looks brand new.

(I believe it has a vestigial back "seat" but I think his days of
attempting any feats in it might have long passed...)

Which reminds me, I need to call him.

I see from this article, Corvette has not changed their engineering focus

2017-09-11 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Rain starting to pick up here along with some wind and occasional gusts,
but nothing too severe yet.  Seems like the forecast is less intense
than from yesterday, so that is good.  Depending on what things look
like I might try to get down to the beach at high tide to see how high
it is and what the surf looks like.  I have been involved in a lawsuit
regarding development on the beach and we are hoping it gets a good
rinse to demonstrate how futile it would be to build out there!  I went
out on the bike yesterday and got about 250 "baseline" pics so will get
some "afters" too.

Power still OK, I hope nothing hits the line coming down the driveway
and knocks me off.

Power still up so that is good, the dogs are totally ferklempt. Last
night I put them out about 9 and they were going insane barking at
something.  I got out to look and there was a white dove sitting on the
porch roof that was making them crazy.  The bird was just sitting there,
rain was starting a bit. Weird.  i wonder if it was one of those birds
raised to be released at events and was too stupid to know what to do,
or it got blown here from somewhere.

Re: [MBZ] More Tampa

2017-09-10 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
I rode my bike over to the beach this morning to check out the action,
tide is up but not a lot of churning at this point.  Went back over just
a little while ago at high tide to see what was going on, it is probably
about 2ft higher than usual, though today and tomorrow are high
astronomical tides.  Winds tomorrow will be onshore at 44-47 at high
tide time, so there will likely be more of a surge than now.  Met a
family there from Tampa who had bailed out and were staying here, Bubba
had his bass boat behind his bigass truck, so I am comforted that the
Redneck Navy has arrived!  But got me thinking about everyone else down
that way and hoping y'all stay safe.

I think we will be OK, certainly better than the models were suggesting
3 days ago when they were showing landfall basically right over my vast
estate.  We'll get some wind and rain and a bit of flooding but we
should be fine.  I did board up the house and garage, so that was a
chore, and have a few things to move around and tie down.  Power company
is not going to shut power off like last October, so unless a limb or
tree takes down my wires I will have lights and refrigeration.
Generator is waiting though, so ready for any eventuality.

Y'all stay dry and safe!

Our house was built to hurricane code less than 20 years ago, and even at that
time the changes to the code were substantial due to the devastation Andrew
wreaked on south Florida. As long as we can protect the openings, like the
windows, we should be fine.

Worst part might be the loss of power, but our area has all underground
utilities and is fed by two different utility substations on a loop feeder.
That means no matter which one comes back up first, we get juice. The
transmission lines that serve the substations are primary feeders, meaning they
have priority over everything else when it comes to restoring service.

We’ve got water, a generator, plenty of fuel and food. If we had to live
without power or the ability to get out, we could easily survive a week.
That’s not to say I would like it, but you have to do what you have to do.

There’s no question this is going to suck big time, especially since we’ll be
getting it overnight, but we’ll get through safely. I was having major league
anxiety over all this up until today, but now that I’m convinced we’re properly
prepared I feel a lot better. By tomorrow mid-day all we’ll be able to do is
hunker down and ride it out.

Sucks to miss the ‘Q, too. Next year.

depends greatly on the conditions. Different metals and even different surface

the temperature, the presence of other gases (especially oxygen) and the size of the
cavity holding the gas will all have an effect.
Acetylene (C2H2) doesn't need to react with anything else; it has a high energy
triple bond between the carbons and when conditions are 'wrong', the molecule
comes apart, mostly liberating free carbon, hydrogen gas and lots of heat which
causes an explosive increase in the pressure.
When oxygen is present, it can be even worse. Consider the fact that when your torch

the noise is very loud."

80 years ago we kids would play with "carbide" (calcium carbide) which generated acetylene when
exposed to water. We wanted an acetylene "cannon" like the rich kids had but satisfied ourselves
with dangerous home made "water pipe" cannons which were just as loud as the store-bought kind.

One of the neighborhood boys put carbide and water in a tin can, punched a
small hole near the bottom so he could ignite the gas, put a bigger tin can
over it, and lit off the acetylene. He spent that night in the hospital since
the flash burnt off his eyebrows, cowlick, and gave him an instant sunburn; but
left him okay otherwise. We never did figure out where the top can went.

After that our parents banned carbide which made the neighborhood dogs happy
since the unexpected loud bangs terrified them worse than the Fourth of July.

Re: [MBZ] Update on canceled SC nuke project

2017-08-30 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes

My buddy Dana in his weekly email provides lots of info about this:

First, the nuclear plant debacle continues to unfold. There are
important lessons about how to avoid these types of train wrecks in the
future, if we pay attention.

Both Governor Henry McMaster and Senator Lindsey Graham are publicly
promoting the sale of Santee Cooper, our state-owned electric utility
that was a 45% investor (with SCANA, at 55%) in the $9 billion hole in
the ground in Jenkinsville. But, as this article from the /Post and
Courier/ reports, although two companies have expressed interest,
neither is “viable,” according to (now former) CEO Lonnie Carter.

http://www.postandcourier.com/business/santee-cooper-has-heard-from-companies-interested-in-joining-v/article_213370d2-86a8-11e7-a901-6707466a42ed.html

This next article begins to explain why no “viable” companies are
interested.

http://www.postandcourier.com/news/potential-santee-cooper-sale-moving-forward-buyers-sign-non-disclosure/article_43bd5ba4-88ce-11e7-8402-97b80d7317cb.html

From the article:

/Industry experts have said Santee Cooper's higher-than-average debt
would make a sale challenging. The utility has $8 billion in debt
— about half from the nuclear project — that would need to be
refinanced. And because a private-sector owner wouldn't be able to offer
investors tax-free returns like Santee Cooper can now, the buyer would
face even higher costs./

I’ll add one more salient fact. Santee Cooper is insolvent. The
agency’s liabilities are greater than its assets. In ordinary language,
it is broke – under water – to the tune of at least $2 billion. Anyone
who is interested, including our governor and our senator, can find this
out by looking at the utility’s 2016 financial statements.

So a conventional “sale” is simply not going to happen. But something
must be done, and it will probably look more like a fire sale and give
away, where assets are stripped out and sold, including the incomplete
nuclear plant, and some of the debt is taken over by the state. Under
any circumstance, in one configuration or another, South Carolina
taxpayers will be on the hook for billions of dollars in losses for
years to come.

There was a time, not long ago, when the utility was on solid financial
ground. Its financial decline occurred with extraordinary speed over
the last decade, under the current management and most of the current board.

As this next article from the /Post and Courier/ reminds us, Santee
Cooper’s abandonment of the nuclear project is not the first major
miscalculation. Eight years ago, almost to the day, the agency threw in
the towel on an ill-conceived coal plant on the Pee Dee River, after
wasting a quarter of a billion dollars on land and plant parts.

http://www.postandcourier.com/business/lawsuit-seeks-to-force-santee-cooper-to-sell-off-scuttled/article_b9865e18-876f-11e7-ac54-0fa28ce1528d.html

All of this explains why, as this next article from the /Post and
Courier/ reports, CEO Lonnie Carter has announced his retirement.

http://www.postandcourier.com/news/santee-cooper-ceo-lonnie-carter-announces-retirement-amid-nuclear-reactor/article_028b009a-89a1-11e7-b6ea-c7d3c51a93d2.html

Finding a new CEO will be no mean feat. From the article:

/Carter’s replacement will be tasked with running an agency with a pile
of debt tied to the nuclear project and an uncertain political future./

Re: the nuclear plant. We are now in the blame-assignment phase. As I
reported in my last news summary, there is a lot of blame to spread
around – from the Legislature, who set the stage 10 years ago for
shifting the costs and risks from SCANA management and shareholders to
its ratepayers, (and now are shocked that the utility did exactly that),
to the Public Service Commission members, who approved one rate increase
after another as costs skyrocketed, to the boards of both SCANA and
Santee Cooper, who failed to protect shareholders, rate payers and the
public from apocalyptically bad business decisions, to, again, the
Legislature, who created the little known Office of Regulatory Staff
(ORS) to protect ratepayers and utilities (at the same time), but failed
abysmally to do either.

As this article from the /Nerve/ explains, ORS had a job assignment that
was impossible from the beginning. The creation of the new agency
shifted the responsibility for oversight from the Office of Consumer
Affairs where, according to the historical data, things were working
fairly well.

https://thenerve.org/an-agency-that-doesnt-even-work-on-paper/

Says the Nerve:

/Clearly, the (old) system was working, despite the view that Consumer
Affairs was underfunded.
 Why
shift the representation of ratepayers to a new, conflicted agency that
doesn’t even work on paper – unless that was the point? According

campaign of Gov. Henry McMaster (R).

McMaster took in about $115,000 from more than 250 contributors affiliated

The revelation is potentially damaging for the governor, who is facing a

Here's one that was hit about as hard as can be without glass breakage.
Not far from Dallas, they had baseball to softball sized hail, sometimes with

Clean title though. Buy it, license it, drive it, if you want a 2015

Re: [MBZ] Installing hitch and trailer wiring on W163 ML

2017-08-24 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
Does this car have the nannies that sense something on a hitch and make
the ABS and stability control go bonkers?

--R

On 8/23/17 9:34 PM, Mitch Haley via Mercedes wrote:

First, buy a Curt 56146 trailer light converter, it has its own power supply
and does not draw power from the taillight housings, just samples taillight
voltages to tell it what to do. This avoids trouble with the bulb warning light
in the dash. Also, I checked the impedence on the power input, with the turn
signals, brake lights and taillights off, it was 26kOhms, so there's no worry
about battery drain when you aren't using the car (the rear power outlet is
always hot).

Buy a Curt 13018 hitch (3500lb), Draw-Tite 75087 (5000lb) or Reese 44720 (8000lb). I
hoped the Curt would not require cutting away part of the plastic bumper cover, but
I still had to notch it to clear the gusset on the back of the hitch. (less cutting
than the Draw-Tite in the video, which sits higher and requires you to cut a notch
wide enough for the 2" receiver.)

Download these two videos:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUtq8gvv8jU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTj1GjgeEMY

I don't follow the videos exactly. When they take the bumper off, and then take
the flat panel antenna off the bumper, I just fold the back seat and stick the
bumper in the back with the right end hanging out to keep from pulling the wire.

I made several changes to the wiring video.
They stuck the box in the left taillight recess, then had to extend the wire to
the right taillight. I stuck the box under the bumper cover, and the green wire
was then long enough to reach the right taillight.

They used a self-drilling-tapping sheet metal screw to punch a hole in the body
and secure the ground wire. I fished the white ground wire through the bumper
plastic and secured it with the rightmost bumper plastic holding screw.
Advantage, no holes drilled in my car.

They ran a long wire and an inline fuse holder to the battery, running the hot
wire under the body along the frame. I ran a 5' wire through the bumper to the
right taillight housing, wiggled it through the rubber grommet for the
taillight wiring (so the body is still waterproof behind the taillight), and
used the same sort of blue wiring tap as was used at the taillights to tap into
the red wire at the rear power outlet/lighter socket.
To get access to the wire, I just had to take off the cargo net hook nearest
the outlet, peel back the rubber tailgate gasket, and pull the interior panel
away from the body until I could get my hand in there and unplug (no locking
clip, just unplug it) the wiring from the outlet. The wire is long enough to
pull out the CD changer access door for easy tapping. Now the trailer light
controller has a 20A fused power source, and there aren't any stray wires under
the body.

My one mistake: While I was wishing they hadn't set the wire lengths to force
you to put the unit by the left taillight (because my chosen power supply was
by the right taillight) I didn't think of the solution until just now as I was
writing this up. Instead of driving to town for a spool of 14ga stranded wire
to extend the power input lead, I could have put the unit under the right end
of the bumper, connected the tail and stoplight wires on the right side,
shortened the green turn signal wire, and used the excess green wire to extend
the yellow left turn signal wire over to the left taillight housing. That keeps
the power wire short, and allows you to do the entire install with the wires
that Curt furnished.

Pictures: The first one shows where I attached the converter box with the supplied
double sided tape. You can also see that the white wire is taped to a 3" zip
tie, I used that to fish the green wire over to the right side and to fish the white
ground wire into the bumper cover as I reattached the bumper cover. The second photo
shows how I ran the power wire parallel to the existing wiring harness and slipped
it into the body via the existing rubber seal.

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Estate 79 CD

2017-08-23 Thread Rich Thomas via Mercedes
So I bought this thing for $1300. It has pretty much sat for 8 years
since the woman had to quit driving it for medical reasons. Her
boyfriend/partner pulled it out from under the carport occasionally to
wash it, so it wasn't completely nasty, paint is good. She wouldn't let
him drive it! It fired right up on ancient dizzel fuel in the tank and
ran well, so that is something too. I drove it around the block (he was
paranoid about no plates, no ins, etc.) and it ran well and shifted well
but the brakes are not too good but they at least work. I don't know if
that is rust on the rotors, stuck calipers or what, but they did work
more or less with some grinding and maybe dragging, pedal was firm no
bleed down so the master cylinder is probably OK. Throttle return
spring is not springing, I'll have to get one. I took the spring off
the 79 TD but this car is different for some reason, maybe a difference
between the TD and the CD? I'll go next week to drag it home on my trailer.

The AC compressor belt is missing, the guy said whenever that was
removed it was working but not BLOWING ICE COLD so the mech cut the belt
for some reason, she got pissed off and left the place like that, so it
was never dealt with. I'll get a belt and dump some refrigerant into it
and see if it might work.

I figure a few $100s for some brake work, new hoses and belts, fluids
change, check out the AC, do a bit of cleaning and polishing, maybe
adjust valves, and get it looking nice and see if I can flip it. Max
says BaT might be a good venue, sounds like a plan. Or maybe try to
sell it to some swell over at the luxury gated resort community...
Aside from a bit of rust starting to show here and there, and some door
dings on the trailing edges, a tear in the (black) leather driver seat
bolster, the car is in pretty nice condition, very clean. Windows were
very slow, probably need to clean the slides. 2 owner car, the woman
who had it last bought it from the original owner in 92.

Or if Kleb wants to buy it... or if any of y'all would be interested,
let me know. You know what I have in it so far (plus your agent fee!).
I think it would be a pretty nice car to just enjoy and not obsess over.
