Perhaps this is over simplistic, but...
As long as the socket and component PCB footprints match, you can put the
appropriate socket part number in a schematic symbol Part Field and
include the field on the BOM report. You will also have to add a note on the
BOM (or have an in-house convention)

For visualizing the PCB assembly, I use and recommend View3D from
http://www.qualecad.com. It's about $500. The rendering is a little slow but
it works well enough. It associates VRML models with your PCB footprints.

What does didn't want to cooperate mean? That you couldn't flip it? You
should be able to have any mix of top, bottom, and multi pads on any given
footprint. Seems pretty simple--just modify the pad properties in the pcb

I heartily concur with Mr Watnoski regarding PCAD superior ease of use and
niceness and sensibility. And no, I am not a newbie, I was a longtime
PCAD user (going back to MD 4.x, that's 1988 kids) and then PADS/DOS for a
couple of years, then more recently ACCEL/Tango v13 for about 3 years, now
, changing PCB packages with 4
engineers at the same time would seriously impact productivity and therefore
