[Freevo-users] freevo and pc-to-tv converters
Hi, Ok... I will post in the wiki too, but first here. Last week I built another freevo box, and since this motherboard was short on PCI/AGP slots, instead of use a video card with TV out, I bought a pc-to-tv converter (pixelview game show). I was used to use freevo on my desktop with a regular monitor, so it was a surprise when I pluged this new machine to the Tv and found the image being cut at top and bottom. After a lot of try and error with Xfree86 confs, I thought about trying the freevo.conf! And it works... hm... strange... I always thought that freevo on X11 would respect the X11 configurations! What I did: X11 configured to 800x600 - freevo.conf to 800x600 = image cut (the image is ok with a window manager) X11 configured to 800x600 - freevo.conf to 640x480 = works!!! X11 configured to 640x480 - freevo.conf to 800x600 = image cut X11 configured to 640x480 - freevo.conf to 640x480 = works!!! I tried other values in freevo.conf like the ones from NTSC or PAL (strange ones like 648x486, 720x480, etc... all of them shows some kind of problem or distortion). My guess is that problem has something to do with SDL, but... who knows? -- Christian Lyra POP-PR - RNP http://lyra.soueu.com.br Something mysterious is formed, born in the silent void. Hi Today, freevo-1.7.0 has been released, there has been a great deal of activity since freevo-1.7.0-rc2 with still more exciting new features. The statistics show 145 additions, 162 changes and 40 removals, since 1.7.0-rc2, much more than I expected :). Thank you so much for this new release of our favorite more-than htpc soft. :-) I´d like to upgrade my freevo install but before upgrading the living room machine, I tried to install freevo 1.7 on a test machine. I´m using debian sarge, and had to backport a few packages to satisfy freevo dependencies. Althought dependecies seems to be ok, freevo is crashing when I try to select listen to music. I tried another install on a debian unstable machine and everything is fine. So I´m trying to find what package is crashing freevo so I can update it. Not at home now, but I will try to remember: 1) download and install pyNotifier and pylirc as requested by kaa-base 2) from backports.org get debhelper (needed to build imlib2) 3) from unstable/testing grab the imlib2 sources. run dpkg-buildpackages and install the new libimlib2 (and the dev) 4) It was late in the night so i just got the pygame-1.7 and install it from source. Unstable has a new pygame but it seems to be tailored to python 2.4 and not 2.3 (I may be wrong...) 5) python setup.py install kaa-base, kaa-metadata and kaa-imlib 6) python setup.py install freevo This is not the debian way to do it, but worked for me (tm). -- Christian Lyra POP-PR - RNP http://lyra.soueu.com.br Thus spake the master programmer: ``You can demonstrate a program for a corporate executive, but you can't make him computer literate.'' Looks like unicode.decode() was introduced in 2.4 alpha 2: Allow string and unicode return types from .encode()/.decode() methods on string and unicode objects. Added unicode.decode() which was missing for no apparent reason. [Freevo-users] movie catalog
Hi there, I have a few ideas that I´d like to share with you. One for mail, this is the first one. From time to time I move some movies from HD to DVDs, but I´d like have a way to catalog what´s on DVDs. It would be nice if I could keep the fxd with movie information and covers on HD, and when selecting this fxd freevo asks to put the DVD labeled something in the drive. Better yet if I could put a DVD on the drive and let freevo automagically catalog the DVD and build the fxds. Perhaps this is just a matter of include a few tags on the fxd and let freevo understand it. And there´s no way to erase a bookmark. [Freevo-users] Remind Plugin
Hi there, I thought that some kind of calendar, or birthdays or todo plugin would be nice. So I hacked this one. I´m sending to the list with the hopes that someone could help me improve it. I need help with the graphics (for now, just using the blue and red buttons), and with the output (how to do a scroll box?). BTW it is using the headlines skin maybe a better one should be made. Well, about the plugins. The file remindicon.py should be put in freevo/plugins/idlebar, and once active with plugin.activate('idlebar.remindicon') will show a bluebutton on idlebar if you have no reminders for today, or a redbutton if you have at least one. The file remind.py should be put in freevo/plugins and made active with plugin.activate('remind', level=45). So you will now have a reminds item on main menu. Once selected you will have the option to see today reminds or the next 7 days reminds (it is easy to add more options, like month reminds). Of course, you will have to have the remind command installed, either from source[1] or from your distro package. both plugins can use the follow 3 variables: REMIND_CMD (defaults to /usr/bin/remind) REMIND_ARGS (use the default) REMIND_FILE (if it´s not defined remind will try to read ~/.reminders) [1] http://www.roaringpenguin.com/en/penguin/openSourceProducts/remind I guess my poor english will need some fixes too. I know... I will submit the files with the right svn diff command, but I´m looking for some feedback first. -- Christian Lyra PoP-PR/RNP # -*- coding: iso-8859-1 -*- # --- # remind.py - IdleBarplugin for monitoring the remind command output # Author: Christian Lyra # --- # # python modules import os import popen2 import time # freevo modules from plugins.idlebar import IdleBarPlugin import plugin, config class PluginInterface(IdleBarPlugin): Show the status based on remind command output. It might be a good idea to have a couple of URLs from the freevo domain, like http://freevo.org/weather/map?location=%s http://freevo.org/weather/data?location=%s,language=%s,units=%s those could be redirected to a suitable external source so that if the external source is broken, the link could be replaced in the redirect without having to change the freevo source already deployed by users... just a suggestion... Re: [Freevo-users] freevo 1.7.2 : FXD files
Hi, I have some need of 'hand tuned' fxd files for some movies, but I'm lost in the (non existing) documentation. You can find about fxd files here: http://freevo.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/doc/FXDFiles, and inside freevo-sources/Docs/fxd_files.txt. Maybe it´s not complete, but it´s a good start point. For instance, it seems possible to deal with subtitle, but I was unable to find a working sample (I don't exactly know the benefit for freevo having information about subtitle !) Maybe this could be useful when you want to select which srt file to use.. But as I prefer to just see my native language, I just have one subtile file... So if you can send some of your samples (about anything around the fxd files). Also, does it exist a common interface to access this kind of files (that's my 'knowledge' about oo programming : don't give an access to the data, only give a object to manipulate data. Maybe only effective in books ?). In this case, I think that reading this part of code could be very instructive, to. as far as I know, there´s no fxd file object or a fxd class. imdb plugin has its own implementation of how to handle fxd files. I think it will be very nice to have some kind of fxd class. While ago I wrote something to handle folder.fxd files, but since they will be gone in 2.0, I gave it up. But I still want to write something to handle fxd files as it can be useful in a lot of ways. -- Christian Lyra PoP-PR/RNP - This SF.net email is sponsored by DB2 Express Download DB2 Express C - the FREE version of DB2 express and take control of your XML. I think that xine is broken if it is still running after the video has finished and the --auto-play=fq option is set. You can check with a ps -ef if xine is still running then there is a problem with xine. Would you like to try the version of childapp that I posted earlier today as this uses subprocess and does not use the shell so the kill kills xine and not its parent shell. As you know the --stdctl means that freevo can send commands to xine using stdin. But freevo can't send a quit at the end of the video unless xine reports that the video has finished on stdout or stderr. Having said all of this I find that xine does indeed write that playing is finished to the stderr channel. *So* attached is a working version of childapp and xine. Hi there, I´m still trying to figure out what is happening... I tried to downgrade xine-ui and xine libs, but the problem persist. Running xine from command line I found that, if you send anything to it then it quits right. I mean, if you run xine, and send a command (SetPosition10%, pause/play), or even just a enter it exit fine. So... [Freevo-users] Item plugins and parameters
Hi there, I´m following the docs on writing plugins [1], and I have a question about it. The example of a Item plugin (the video.ts2avi plugin) shows that you must have a actions function that returns a list of tuples with (function to be called, Menu text). The called functions receive (self, arg=None, Menu=None). Is there a way to pass another parameter, or set the arg variable? I would like to call the same function but with different parameters. Using the video.t2avi as example, there is a function to encode to 4:3 and another one to encode to letterbox. Is there a way to call just one function passing the format that you want as a argument? Re: [Freevo-users] xine subtitles size
hi, I wonder if anyone has a solution to the following problem. I'm setting subtitles size for xine player in ~freevo/.xine/config file (freevo is running under 'freevo' user), but the property seems to change ONLY subtitles size for DVD playback, but NOT for DivX subtitles used during playback of movie files with subrip or sub subtitle file. The xine property I'm refering to is subtitles.separate.subtitle_size. are you really sure about that? The expected behaviour is that you CAN change the size of subtitles in srt files, but CANT on DVDs as the subtitles found on DVD are just images, not text. There are also separate subtitles that comes in .sub + .idx files. Re: [Freevo-users] xine subtitles size
This is quite correct, DVDs use four colour bitmaps for subtitles and often they are too small to read. I don't know of any decent subtitle rippers for Linux but if you have a Windows PC you can use subrip to OCR the bitmaps to a srt file and save this with the video files, not sure exactly where for a DVD, you can use the encoding server to rip the dvd to an avi file. mplayer can read these and display them with the video and you can then set the size. I don't know about xine as I prefer mplayer. there´s a ksubtitleripper, that do that... it´s a front-end to subtitleripper/gocr. I tried it once, it´s not perfect, but may do the work. I prefer xine because the way it handle subtitles... xine can use the black borders of a 16:9 movie on a 4:3 tv to show the subtitles, as far as I know, mplayer cant (please, tell me that I´m wrong :-) ). -- Christian Lyra POP-PR - RNP http://lyra.soueu.com.br Thus spake the master programmer: ``Though a program be but three lines long, someday it will have to be maintained.'' As I already put some time to get my fxd files right, I´d like to use the information that I already have to populate the videodb. If you haven't already bought the core 2 duo then maybe an Apple TV would do? I know you also mention a VFD and it doesn't have one but I believe that you can run linux on them (so freevo should be fine) and they come in at €299 and €399 in a great form factor, nice connectivity options and the power to do high def (can someone confirm this?). Add an usb tv card and an external drive to take care of any additional storage requirements. I have no personal experience with these (that may change soon) I just saw them mentioned here recently and thought it was worth throwing out there. If someone else can comment please enlighten us. No, no... it´s expensive in Europe ( ~ 400 Euros - case and motherboard... you have to add the rest) and insane expensive in Brazil.
