Re: [Finale] OVERSIZED accidentals on chord symbols

Thank you John, but that just gives us a dialog box of symbols but no variable

inside the choice boxes. How can I vary the size? Now, they are much too large.
Perhaps I have to change the font on all the chord symbols. Would that help?

Re: [Finale] GROUPS, barlines, instr names

Thanks JB. Checking all measures does it for the barlines. However, the staff

but also eliminates the name from the score (which I don't want). Any solution

 Hi Kim -
Groups were reworked in 2011. The short answer is to double click a handle on
the brace of the 1st system. Make any changes you want to the group setup
here (ie. unchecking show group name). In the upper right hand corner
you'll see the group has a defined range. Checking all measures for this
group definition will apply it to the entire part.

[Finale] GROUPS, barlines, instr names

2012-07-04 Thread Kim Richmond
Here's a question I've been meaning to ask for years and never have. I'm
working with MacFin2011.
On piano parts, some grand staves have barlines reaching through the
staves (treble and bass) the way I want them to, but other systems, later on in
the part have barlines only on EACH staff. What is the remedy for that? In
Staff Tool/Groups I have designated I want barlines THROUGH both staves.
Also, so systems have have Piano out to the left. In Staff
Tool/Groups I have designated No Name, also, in the Staff dialog, I have no
name.

[Finale] ADDING STAVE after formatting parts

2012-04-30 Thread Kim Richmond
How do we add a stave after having formatting all the existing parts.
Example: I have an orchestra score, with parts generated and formatted. Then I
discover I need to add a second keyboard part. So I add it to the score and
fill it in.
When I go to manage parts (or edit parts), it does not appear in the
parts list. So I need to generate a part. When I hit Generate Parts, it wipes
out (after warning me) all the formatting on all of the existing parts.
There must be some way around that debacle (and waste of HOURS of
work). How do I generate a new part without re-generating all the existing
parts?

I don't think that's what he means. He wants two different PARTS to
have different measure number settings.

I think the easiest way to achieve this is to extract the one part
with different number settings (the vocal part) and change them once
extracted. You won't have the part linked any more, but that isn't
as much of a pain in the neck as I expected it to be on the
occasions I've done it.

An alternative is to set up two different regions, then number one
of them to start at measure 999 while you print the other parts,
then switch it to start at measure 1 and the OTHER region at measure
999 while you print the vocal part. You will have to remember to
make that change every time you print parts, though. That's why I
think the extracted part is a better solution.

I think I remember jef chippewa coming up with this scheme before we
had separate layout for score and parts.

Kim, I think another solution to your problem (which is probably
that measure numbers collide with the lyrics, right?) is just to
have the normal linked part, then in page view in the vocal part,
select the measure tool, hit command-A to select all (which will
select the measure numbers) then drag them to above the staff all at
once. You might have to do this once for each page, but it is very
easy to do and prevents measure number collisions. Just make sure
they are close enough to the staff that the singer associates them
with the proper measure, NOT the measure above!

Christopher

I think that works through the measure number dialogue box: one set

There are several different settings for each in the lower two

Is that what you need?

[Finale] STAFF STYLE and Multrests appearances on parts

2010-12-28 Thread Kim Richmond
Something I cannot understand, but you all probably have covered it
long ago, concerns Staff Styles in the newer versions. I'm on
MacFin2011 but I think this was true of 2010 also.
After having put in Staff Styles such as slashes on the score for
various parts using chord symbols, when I go to the part to format it,
the Staff Styles do not appear. Why? This way I have to put them in
again for EACH part.
The same is true about Multirests. Even though I do a Create/
Multirests in the score before I go to the parts, I find that I have
to do that for EACH part. That can't be right.

[Finale] BLANK page results

2010-12-23 Thread Kim Richmond
Perhaps someone has come upon this problem. I will here describe the
problem, and, for a change, one solution.
A colleague called me today to say he was having a problem printing a
piece. This is on a Mac with Fin2004. It is a two-page vocal and piano
part. When he went to print it, all he got from the printer was two
blank pages. He tried previewing it before he printed, also making a
PDF. All he could see was two blank pages, although his regular file
included everything he had imputed.

Anybody know why this happened?
The solution was: he made another document from scratch and copied
and pasted from the old doc to the new one. It printed properly.

Any reason for any of this?

parts, there is a learning curve for working with that, (pre set-up
templates are a big help) but it's well worth the trouble.

Let me know, if you have specific questions.

[Finale] Re: WHAT Sibelius can't do

2009-06-25 Thread Kim Richmond
My main issue that Sibelius cannot do is a small thing, but something
I really want. That is, to be able to have a system start with (for
instance) the double bar that appears at the end of the previous
system. It will not do that and, according to the Sibelius people, I
shouldn't want it to. However, that is a normal practice of notation
where I work (Los Angeles). It's not even on Sibelius' schedule to
implement.

[Finale] Re: PLAYBACK freezing

2008-12-12 Thread Kim Richmond

Thank you to all who contributed in the effort to answer my problem.
Yes, Human Playback is the problem. But as far as having expressions
that hang it up, all I have in the score is a single melody line,
just to see if it would play. No articulations, no tempo indications.
The only thing I have is one time change for a bar, and a couple of
double bars.

Kim,
I assume you are using some sort of Human Playback
This crashing problem is caused most frequently by some
articulation that HP dislikes. In 2009, I get it frequently with
the tremolo/drumroll mark, which was hell since I was doing some
marching band stuff. The only way I know of to find the offending
item and keep HP on is to eliminate articulations one by one until
playback succeeds. Perhaps others can identify specific problems in
addition to the drumroll one I mentioned above.
Another possibility is to change the HP style to another one if
appropriate or turn it off. If you have HP on, try turning it off.

Jim

PS-what version of Sibelius are you using?

[Finale] Bob Florence memorial recording

2008-09-18 Thread Kim Richmond

Dear Listers,
Some of you will be interested to know that a final album by Bob
Florence's Limited Edition is being planned. Bob had written
selections to be recorded last June but his health did not permit it.
We now have the music from his computer and will record on October
22-23. The CD will be on the MAMA label (Summit Records) and is being
produced by myself with Phil Norman and Tom Peterson. The band is
currently rehearsing the charts, a mix of standards and originals.
There will be a short surprise selection to conclude the recording,
with the band recording over a previously-recorded Florence solo
piano track. A fitting farewell.
Of course, you will be informed when the CD becomes available
(probably early Spring).

waste time redrawing them.

From the View Menu, choose Scroll View.
Click the Staff Tool

want to see.
Click the handle of the Violin I staff. Then, while pressing
, click the handle of the Viola staff.
-clicking allows you to select several staves one at a time, even

That's not the way it works for me. Pressing Shift and selecting
non-continuous staves selects all the ones in between. Solution?

[Finale] DISK space

2008-04-09 Thread Kim Richmond
I am having a disk space issue. It might not be a Finale issue, but I
think it is.
I recently updated from MacFin2007 to 2008. I installed the program
along with the Garriton Sounds that came along with it. Before this I
had 50 GB hard drive space available. After installation I had 24 GB
available. I worked on a piece last night for about 2 hours. I leave
my computer on at night. When I got up this morning my computer said
the disk was full.
I thought I had saved the new piece last night, but when I tried to
quit it this morning, it wouldn't SAVE, saying there was not enough
disk space. So I lost the 2 hours of work. Now my disk says it has
only 3 GB of free space.
Is this a Finale issue? I can't think of any other reason. Is this a
Garriton issue.
If the answer is YES to the last question, can I install the
Garriton stuff on an external hard drive and have it work with the
program on my native hard disk?

[Finale] Northwoods Jazz Camp (Kim Richmond/Clay Jenkins camp)

Dear Finale Listers,
I have received some interest in this from some of you on this list
in the past, and I have contacted those individually, but I thought I
would send another message about this year's event to the List in
general. Please excuse the duplicates.

I am hoping you will join us for the Northwoods Jazz Camp this year.
As you know, this is a 4-day camp for adults (21 and above) at the
northern Wisconsin Holiday Acres Resort. I think you would get a lot
out of it, and the hang with the professional musician staff is
always fun for the students. The dates are the evening of Wednesday,
May 14 through the night of Saturday, May 17. The new feature this
year is that we will have a big band made up of students AND faculty
which will play part of the concert on Saturday night.
The faculty is Clay Jenkins (trumpet), Scott Whitfield (trombone),
Tom Hynes (guitar), Lee Tomboulian (piano), Jeff Campbell (bass), Tim
Davis (drums), Betty Tomboulian (vocals), and myself (saxophones).
If you want to join us, I urge you to enroll now. I am attaching the
camp flyer (PDF) (this probably won't transmit on a group e-mail
list) and I suggest you check out the website.

Finale does this sometimes with old documents. I don't know why. You
will have to manage and create new parts manually.

Under Document, select Manage Parts.

Click on Edit PArt Definition

In the left box, this is the part you are going to edit. Choose
Piano. The contents of this part should now appear in the middle box.

In the middle box, you have a bunch of stuff, probably including a
group. Click each one and hit Remove From Part.

Now from the right box, choose the piano group (this might be called
something like Group 3 or it be called Piano, but since it is a group
it will have a triangle beside it. You are choosing to put the whole
group. If in your score the group called Piano includes the bass and
drums, you will have to remove them while in the score, not here, but
I don't think that is the case. This should fix the piano part.

Now to create a bass and drum part manually. Under the left box,
click New Part.

Under the middle box, click Edit Part Name and call it Bass.

In the right box, choose the bass staff and click Add to Part

Repeat for the drums.

Christopher

I have a score that consists of Vocal, Piano, Bass and Drums. I add

all the entries, I go to Manage Parts, then Generate Parts. All parts
are generated except for bass and drums. They are found, however, in
a folder in the Available Instruments list in the Part Definition.
How can I make these separate parts (they are now contained within

Sorry Kim, thought you got the answer.

I think what's going on here is that the part definition does not
include the
staff that you want it to contain. Seems bizarre, I know, but this
is a
feature, I guess, so that you can easily create TACET parts. At
any rate, in the
manage parts area, click on your Tuba part in the left hand column.
I suspect
there is nothing in the middle column. Highlight the Tuba from
the right
hand column and click on the add to part button and OK. Now the
material

should be included in the part.

Hope that helps.

Indeed it does help and is clear now. Thanks so much for your help.
Also thanks to Aaron.

[Finale] NEW part

2007-03-21 Thread Kim Richmond
I have a score in MacFin2007c. I want to add a tuba part. I add the
part by double-clicking between the trombone section and the guitar.
I enter the music. I go to the linked part and it's a blank page, no
staves, no music. What did I do wrong and how do I remedy it? The
tuba part shows in the Manage Parts page.
I can do a Special Part Extraction and get the part in a separate
file, but how do I access the tuba part in the same file as a linked
part?

You can also do Measure | Multimeasure Rest | Create for Parts/Score
and do all the parts in one go.

Or you can go to Document Options | Multimeasure Rests and check
Update Automatically. Then as you add music, MM rests in the part
should break themselves as needed. I think the downside to this is
that Finale actually recalculates each MM rest when you switch to the
part, and you will lose any manual edits. For example, if you have
adjusted the endpoint of an MM rest to avoid a clef change, you will
lose that edit.

It appears this 2007 version has a LOT of problems.

Maybe, but this is actually working as designed. Take a look at 37-23
in the manual, which spells most of this out. I'm not saying this is
the best approach, but it's not a bug either.

[Finale] EXPLODE function not working correctly

2007-02-23 Thread Kim Richmond
Again, maybe this has been covered, but if so, I didn't see it.
FinMac2007c.
Example: I have two parts I enter on the flute line. They are in
4ths. I explode them so that the top note will be on the flute staff,
and the bottom note will be on the oboe (2nd) staff. The HIGHER notes
of the figure, appear, on the top staff as the LOWER notes in unison
with the oboe.
More detail, same example. It is a three-note figure, 2 8ths and a
half note. The top voice is D (middle of treble staff) up to high C,
down to Bb. The low voice is A (under the D), up to G, down to F.
When I explode, the low voice is right, but the top voice is D, G, F
(the last 2 note unison with the low part).
Any solutions? Using the Note Mover tool is one solution, but a lot
more steps.

[Finale] MULTIMEASURE catastrophe

2007-02-23 Thread Kim Richmond
OK, here's another shortcoming for MacFin2007c, and this one almost
completely sabotaged my rehearsal of my orchestra today. It's a good
thing is wasn't a recording session.
In going to tweak Linked Parts after placing all entries in the
score, I discovered that some measures were left out with a group of
number (like below an expanse of multimeasure rests) underneath one
measure of music. I quickly learned that that meant there were
measures filled with music not showing on the part. The solution was,
on each part, with the Measure Tool selected, choose Create
Multimeasure Rests. That reveals the hidden music. But it has to be
done on every part. Doing it when viewing the score doesn't do it.
Unfortunately, I hadn't done that with all 22 parts, and there was a
lot of missing music in the parts today.

It appears this 2007 version has a LOT of problems.

[Finale] OT- NORTHWOODS JAZZ CAMP

2007-01-13 Thread Kim Richmond

Dear List members,
I know this is way OT, but a few of you might be interested,
especially those in the USA Midwest.
This is to announce that the Northwoods Jazz Camp/Jazz Party will
again be taking place this year. This will be the third annual, and
we believe it will be better than ever.
The dates are Wednesday evening, May 16, to Saturday night, May 19,
2007. Notice the slightly different times than before. We will start
with a camp meeting (faculty/students), and a faculty concert on
WEDNESDAY night (we've started everything in previous years on
Thursday morning). The event will end with the Saturday night concert
(not Sunday, as before). This takes place at Holiday Acres Resort,
Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
Please consider joining us. It will be a lot of fun to play together
and learn more about improvising, tunes, etc. We again are having an
all-star faculty. I cannot attach the flyer, to show you the details,
because of the restrictions of the List. But please check out the
website. Also, please contact me personally if you have any
questions, and contact Gladys at Holiday Acres Resort to enroll.

I hope you can be with us.

Finale 2007 and last week we finally got to the Linked Parts, me
having no experience with that new feature of Finale. Well, we got

[Finale] COPYING chord symbols

Sorry, I haven't been monitoring this List carefully, so this might

A colleague of mine just installed MacFin2007 and used it for a

from location to another, entries that included chord changes, was
disastrous. It changed the symbols extremely and made that function
unusable.
He called MM and got an admission that it was a bug. Does everybody

2006-09-23 Thread Kim Richmond
I'm sure this has been covered, or at least mentioned, recently, so
excuse me for asking this.
Is there a wrinkle in the copying process in Fin2007? Can we longer

[Finale] Re: Sibelius compared to Finale

2005-07-16 Thread Kim Richmond

Dear members of both Lists,
I am a LONG time user of Finale.
I'm coming to the quick (maybe too hasty, after learning/using
Sibelius for only

a few weeks?) conclusion, that while it's a wonderful program able to
get quick quality results, it does not have the flexibility that
Finale has. That is indicated by at least a couple of (what I
consider) important details.
1) I'm finding that Sibelius cannot provide me with double bars at
the beginning of a system (reflecting a double bar at the end of the
previous system).
2) I'm finding that Sibelius cannot provide me with broken slurs over
eighth-note tuplets, which I find quite desirable for easy reading.
The brackets look clunky over 8ths, although I do want them over
quarters and longer values.
Those are two issues I found right away.
Another issue is that I cannot find anything in Sibelius
equivalent to Finale's Special Part Extraction, where, after
extracting parts, a score can reflect changes made in those parts. I
understand, however, that Sibelius v.4 is going to remedy that with
score/parts linking.

Ok, I have to chime here about Karen's reply. The very brief reference
she made to herself as being a computer consultant has been MOST
important to me. Folks, Karen is someone who regularly saves my life
computer-wise. In my opinion, she is a qualified expert in almost all
things Macintosh, especially Finale. I have employed her on a regular
basis for a full year now, and she is a dream come true, for not only
me but my wife as well. When I was in a hopeless tangle on my fronts,
she literally saved me. I have referred her to Bob Florence and several
others, and she has been great. AND, best of all, she has become a good
friend. Only after all this did I find out what a good musician she is.

Born in 1964 in Germany to an American mother and a British/American
father. Moved to the states shortly thereafter where I was raised in
Denver Colorado. Studied classical flute as a child and had my first
experience with writing jazz in junior high school when there were no
flute parts for the jazz band so I had to write my own. Bless my
band director for letting me hang around anyway!
I was never a very good sight reader growing up due to my dyslexia.
When the notes started going by too quickly, I would have to wing it
because I just couldn't see them. This was always a great
embarrassment to me but I guess it was a good thing in a way because
it helped me to develop my ears. Despite my reading difficulties, my
teacher still supported and encouraged me musically thank goodness.
So bless my classical flute teacher for never berating me and instead
sending me to jazz school where I felt like I was finally home
musically.
Graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in Jazz
Composition. I was fortunate enough to get to study with Herb
Pomeroy, Greg Hopkins, Bob Freedman, Ken Pullig, Wayne Naus, Dennis
Grillo and Richard Lowell. I started copying charts for Bob Freedman
to make extra money while in school and of course spent many hours
copying my own charts, pen and ink, on a blue footlocker in a tiny
apartment in Boston. Bless all of my friends that stopped by to keep
me company and bring coffee. I met so many great people while at
school!
I then lived in Phoenix for several years where I was a professional
jazz flautist in various duos, trios, quartets etc. and also an RB
band. We did a mix of original music and standards and played at
clubs, casual gigs and jazz and art festivals. I worked with and
studied with a wonderful person and jazz guitar player named Bud
Dimock during that time too. That was always great fun! The
highlight of my time in Phoenix was getting to play with Ray Charles
and his band during one of his concerts in Phoenix. I will never
forget that! Bless my booking agent for hiring me for that one!
I currently live in Los Angeles and make my living as a full time
musician. Most of my income comes from being a proofreader, copyist,
midi transcriptionist and music librarian for feature films and
television. But I also compose, arrange, orchestrate and play from
time to time as well. I do a bit of computer consulting for a hand
full of musicians here in town too. Not only are these people wildly
talented musicians, they are also wonderful, kind, warm and decent
human beings. Bless them (and their wives who are equally wonderful)
for adding so much to my life in the past couple of years. They have
reminded me of how much sheer joy can be found in creating and
playing music just for the sake of the music itself. A couple of
them are listers here so I'll take this chance to say thank you!
For recreation, I love to read, water and snow ski, and spend as much
time as possible just hanging out and talking with friends. The
older I get the more I realize that simple pleasures really are the
best.
Thanks Bob for starting this thread. And thanks to all of you who
have posted. I have enjoyed reading your stories very much!

Go to the Transposition dialog for the staff.
Instead of using the canned Eb transposition, select Other. Then set
the
Interval to 6 and the Key Alter to -9. Voila.

If you want standard Eb transposition for other parts of the piece, you
can use a Staff Style to apply the special transposition to only the
part of the piece that is in A major.

Here's a problem that has cropped up on this latest version of Finale

I'm adding a guitar part to an existing score. Measure 60 has a guitar
passage I want to copy and paste into measure 70. Measure 60 has a
French horn part that has the expression with mute entered as a
Measure-attached expression, assigned to only the French horn staff.
When I paste the guitar passage from measure 60 to 70, suddenly with
mute appears in measure 70 on EVERY staff.
Any solution? And don't tell me I should never use Measure-attached
expressions, only Note-attached expressions. I know that would have
avoided the problem, but I've got hundreds of Measure-attached
expressions in this piece. Or does someone know a simply way to change
all the Measure-attached-assigned-only-to-a-single-staff expressions
into Note-attached expressions? Probably not.

[Finale] TOOL BAR

2004-10-20 Thread Kim Richmond
Dear Listers,
This is driving me nuts, and I have been hassling with this all
through 2004, and now the same thing is true of 2005 version of MacFin.
I like to have the Tool Bar in a single strip across the top of the
screen, using the Contemporary palette. I like the tools in a certain
order, and change them to what I want by dragging them to their
preferred positions while hold down Shift/Control. Nothing I do will
retain the way I configure it when I restart Finale and reopen a file.
Extenuating circumstances: I can get a single strip only if I switch
to Classic palette. That will stay and appear the next time I open
Finale. But the preferred position order will not. If, before I close
the file, I change back to Contemporary palette, it will not stay there
and the order will be back to a default setting.
Also, I have always been important to Save the file and also, under
Edit/Save Special, do Save Prefs. To no avail.
	Any solutions come to mind?
All the best,
KIM Richmond

[Finale] Re: OPTIMIZING

2004-10-12 Thread Kim Richmond
I want to thank you all for your suggestions. Karen is one who solved
it. I had done Special Part extraction prior to all this, so it seems I
had to UNEXTRACT the part, then change the setting under the Group
attributes, then EXTRACT again, the optimize. That did it.

KIM Richmond

[Finale] OPTIMIZING staff system

2004-10-11 Thread Kim Richmond
OK, I've had this problem before, but I can't remember how I solved it.
Maybe you guys can help.
No matter what I do, the piano part will not optimize into one staff
at any point.
I have checked in Edit Group Attributes and made sure it is set on
Optimize Staves Normally (although after trying to optimize a few
times, it reverts back to Only Remove When All Staves Are Empty).
I have made there are no entries in the blank staff in the systems I'm
trying to optimize.
I've checked in the Staff Systems attributes to make sure both staves
have Allow Optimization checked.
Any ideas?
All the best,
KIM Richmond

All the best,
Do you have any real whole rests? These are created when you enter a
whole note and backspace to convert to a rest, in Speedy Entry, or
simply entered as a rest by clicking in Simple entry. If there are any
of these (they look just like the whole rests inserted into empty
measures by the program) the staff won't be optimized out.
If the staff is supposed to be truly empty, you can simply use mass
mover to highlight the measures in question and then clear everything.
But if there is anything attached to those specific measures you can't
remove that staff from that system.

No results. I did make very sure there were no entries.
All the best,
KIM R

If you have already tried optimising, you will have to REMOVE
optimisation before the Group Attributes can be changed. Then go back
and optimise again. I don't why it works like this. It just does.
This little tidbit cost me several hours a year or two ago. Grr.
Christopher

Sounds like it should work, but doesn't in this case. What am I
overlooking?

[Finale] SPACING

2004-10-06 Thread Kim Richmond
On MacFin2004b, I'm having a question about Spacing.
I finally abandoned my old templates from many previous versions back,
and am attempting to score something using Setup Wizard from the start.
When I highlight an area and press 4 (note spacing), I get a very large
measure at the end the staff, and everything scrunched together in the
earlier measures. Pressing 3 (beat spacing) produces some very
unnatural looking spacing, but does spread everything out a little
more.
	Any solution?
All the best,
KIM Richmond
