You are right in suspecting that they have come from me. Someone has hijacked
my e-mail account and is sending out e-mails in my name. I spoke with the AOL
people and they told me to change my password. This has not helped. I was
trying not to have to change my e-mail address since I have had it for over 20
years and everyone I know has it. I am still trying to find out what else there
is I'd need to do. I am so terribly sorry for the problems this has caused
everyone and I will try to clear it up as soon as possible.

Dana, I have Medicare as my primary insurance and blue cross as my secondary. I
have a home healthcare nurse, who comes out every three weeks to change my
Foley catheter. I'm pretty sure that Medicare is the one who covers the cost.
Or maybe they just covered there 80% and Blue Cross covers the other 20%.
However it's done, I'm not billed for it. I have been doing this for the past
five years. If I suspect I have a urinary tract infection, the nurse takes a
urine sample and has the results that my primary care doctor.

I have a fairly new doctor that doesn't think I need home healthcare like I've
had with all my previous doctors. I was given this doctor when my internist
became a hospitalist.

Can you imagine why a doctor would not want a patient to have home healthcare?

I've tried to make calls for other doctors and most don't take Medicaid. Even
though I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare right now, my insurance will
be changing and Medicare will be first in Blue Cross Blue Shield second in
February when my stepmom retires. I've been at this same same group or an quite
a number of years and they accept because of long-standing patient. Most
doctors are no longer accepting. Right now it doesn't matter because Blue Cross
covers most of my bill. I don't even know what Medicare will pick up. I need
your input about this problem.

Thank you,
Dana

There are several wireless options, but in my experience none of them are
really inexpensive. Right now I'm using an older model of the Nady encore II.
Sometimes I use other microphones on that wireless system, but right now I'm
using the simple lapel microphone that comes with the wireless transmitter

operates it. If you train the system properly, it will become pretty accurate

I've also used The Boom Microphone V4 with this wireless system with great

Hi Naomi
No, the legislation was written by a C56 quad about 23 years ago. He wrote the
legislation and pushed it through the state legislature to be on a two year
grant program, I do not know who writes the grants when they need renewing
It is pretty awesome as it allows for up to five HRS per day, seven days a
week. It also allow non medical personnel to handle bowel care, cathing, and
wound care after being signed off by an RN. Otherwise Nevada legislature
states that all that sort of thing must be done by trained medical personnel.
Because I have been in the field of mental retardation and mental health I was
aware of this program before I broke my neck. So it enabled me to come home
from rehab, 3 1/2 months after I broke my neck, and after the first 30 days of
Home Health paid for by the insurance company I was able to be accepted into
this program. Now I advocate for newly injured and encourage the families to
apply just as soon as they know when their loved one is coming home. It
certainly helps to make the transition easier. (if there is an easy way to
make such a transition J)

since 1980 and the younger one since 1982, eight years before I broke my neck.
They are my job and I get paid for my time training them, and for all living
expenses. It is a win-win situation.
I have 35 HRS per week for attendant care for myself, I am a complete C4 with
no movement other than a shoulder shrug, so I have someone come in the morning
and get me up and then another person returns in the evening and puts me to bed.
My husband and I divorced six years after I broke my neck, and I retained the
house and property. In 2002 I sold the house to my daughter and built one

over 65-get Social Security retirement, but I was not eligible for 14 years for
disability because I was missing one quarter of work in the last five years

My caregivers are provided by an agency which is funded by a grant from the
state of Nevada. Payment is on a sliding scale depending on income. It’s a
fantastic program. I am very lucky to have it.
I have my own van, a 1990 Chevy that had been converted into a recreational
vehicle with the raised roof. I purchased it five years ago for $4000 and
installed a lift that I purchased off of Ebay for $500. Reno also has an
excellent access program. Door to door for $3.00 each way for any reason, a 30
minute window in which they arrive, and if it is after their standard working
hours a taxi ride for the same $3.00.
By having a host family for my guys as I call them I do give up an open
schedule. If I want to go out of town I have to make arrangements for someone
to live in the house and send somebody needs to be with them on the property at
all times I have to schedule all appointments and social activities around
their time frame. But believe me, it is very important as I have some
financial independence and is well worth the drawbacks.

[QUAD-L] Anniversary

Today, July 2, marks the five-year mark of being stricken with Transverse
Myelitis. I am celebrating it by being bedridden, nursing two pressure sores.
Have you ever tried lying on one side, for days at a time? It causes me to have
claustrophobic anxiety attack , but it is quite necessary to avoid flap surgery

I am currently living at home, but looking for an assistant living
facility, as I do not have the help here that I need. I pay someone to come in
the
morning to get me washed and dressed and into my chair. The remainder of
the day, my 80 year old mother, who is in poor health, is here with me. I
pay someone to come in the evening, to put me into bed. During the night
time, my mother and husband are here, but they both sleep upstairs, and I am
downstairs in the family room, with my cell phone headset on in case of an
emergency. During the nights, I sleep on my back entire time and sit in my
chair from 8 AM to 9 PM. I've been fortunate to this point (five years post as
of tomorrow July 2) but now my bottom is starting to break down and I need
even more care and attention that I don't have. My husband does not want
to be a caregiver. He provides for what I need, but is not very attentive,
which is why I need assisted-living. It is so expensive that I really can't
afford it, which is why I'm still at home.

I was reading a little about Invacare having this MK6i IR
It can convert your chair's joystick into a remote control for your TV, DVD,
etc. Even use it to move your mouse on your computer.
Anyone ever try this? It could be cool.

I am a C-4 quad with an indwelling Foley catheter. I have had an indwelling
catheter for 44 years. In the 1960s it was the only way to go. I am a male,
and my urethra has eroded severely. My urologist says that my urethra is
eroding, and suggests I have a procedure called a urostomy. . I would do a
lot of research before I make any decisions. Five years ago I went to a
urologist, he was smart and cocky and told me that he knew that he would find
tumors and bladder cancer. People just don't live 47 years with out big
problems. Well, needless to say after he examined me one of the areas biopsied
came back low malignancy potential and he informed me that I had cancer. We
were scared, but God intervened and I feel my life was saved. He wanted me to
have a urostomy and my bladder was to be removed. The next day I got very ill,
he wanted to speed things along, but I felt that my symptoms were that of AD.
He said there was no way and I immediately started to see red flags. I called
for a second opinion, the urologist said there was no hurry and that I should
go to John Hopkins urology department. That is exactly what I did. After
meeting with the number two man in the department, he recommended viewing the
biopsy slides and we were to return in three weeks. I returned and the first
thing he said is I have good news, you do not have cancer. He saw no reason
for me to not use the catheter. He performed a procedure called Urodynamic,
which measures the amount of urine your bladder can hold. Mine is holding less
than an ounce of urine.. Mine holds about the same. So now he wants to remove
my bladder, and make me a new one using part of my small intestine. During this
procedure, both ureters are relocated, a new bladder is made, and urine as
directed from the body through a stoma in the abdomen, which connects to a bag
that adheres to the skin. I am going to the hospital on Tuesday to have an MRI,
to make sure that it's safe for me to have this procedure because I also have
Crohn's disease and disturbing my small intestine, may cause my Crohn's to
flareup (which is a very terrible thing).
. One Big issue is UTI's and with this procedure name may be more prevalent.

My dilemma is this: I have to choose between having this very invasive surgery,
and all of that may come after it including infection from many sources,
including the new bladder, ureter relocation, the stoma, and skin irritation
from the adhesive for the bag, and not to mention the Crohn's flareup

Or.

I can wear incontinent briefs. I also had problems getting wet when I went to
the hospital. Since I has gone to using 2 ditropan 5mg each day morning and
evening, and started to take two tablets

The other day I mentioned that I never go out by myself without my chest strap
n, or without my phone. That night I took my dog for a quick pee check before
ed. My chair is in the shop, so I'm in my backup. It has no chest strap.
sually when I go out alone, I put a strap around my headrest and my head and
ne arm. Since I was just going around the block... I didn't... nor did I take
y phone.
'm part way around and my dog pees, so I turn around because it's shorter. My
ear wheel slips off the sidewalk into the gravel and is stuck just a bit. My
rror was I was sitting with my back to far upright. So when my chair jerks when
t gets unstuck, I start to fall/tip forward. I've done this before and my
eflex is to gun the chair forward to help me sit back. I stop myself / the
hair, before I get to the edge, the the fast stop makes me fall forward even
ore. I hit the joystick with my arm and off I go, right off the curb. Good
hing was I was going forward not sideways so no tipping over. Plus my legrest
it the street and stopped my chair from going further into the street. Bad news
as my legrest hits the street and I make a dead stop. No momentum to help me
it back up.
o I'm stuck half off the curb, tipped forward on my lap, with no phone. At
ight not many cars drive by. Luckily I was there only about 3-4 minutes when I
eard loud taking in the school parking lot across the street. I start yelling
CAN SOMEONE HELP ME It took a minute of yelling before I heard them yelling
ack that they were on there way over. A man and lady out jogging. They were so
ice, he was trying to sit me back up first, but was so careful. Like he was
oing to break me. Then they were able to lift my front wheels back up on the
idewalk. Then they asked if I needed them to walk home with me :-)
After 28 years, that was the first time going off a curb. Once my 5/6 year old
iece was on my lap driving and we went off our curb going fast, but it is the
urved/slopped kind. I go up/down them all the time, but I have to tilt my back
o go down it, then tilt all the way up to go up the curb, but I do it very
low.

Call me stupid, but I just don't get Twitter. I tried following a couple of
them but all the remarks just seem to be random statements unrelated to
anything.

At 04:22 PM 6/28/2009, Lori Michaelson said something that elicited my response:
?

It seems like everyone is all in a twitter about Twitter.com! Pardon the pun!
LOL.
?
First it was MySpace, then people started using Facebook and now Twitter is hot
for the same reasons as the two prior sites.
?
Again, I don't have time to start one of these let alone keep up with it so it
will be a future item on my agenda if I ever get that far or want to go that
route. By then it will probably be something else! LOL LOL
?
But also, to me, it seems more like something a teenager would want to use.
Friends, personal info, for the latest KRAZE.? Almost like a popularity thing
but also a fun thing.
?
And, for those computer geniuses (like my husband) and hackers - even if they
are set up to block out certain people or choose certain people - the
information is not private to many many people that you are not aware of.
?
E-mailing personal information to my online friends, etc, trying to keep up
with my computer projects and working on putting up my own personal website is
even more than I can handle -- especially now.?
?
Different strokes for different folks as always but am I alone in thinking that
it seems to be something that teenagers would do? On the flip side, we are all
young at heart so it is a different kind of fun for those that have the time to
keep up with it, etc.!

I feel you! Working with this voice recognition system, SUCKS! !! I was
used to working with Naturallyspeaking. I am getting better at using it, but
I
still don't like it. It doesn't type in all of the programs that I'm used
to. I have to open word pad and type in there and then cut and paste. It is
a pain in the ass. My husband bought it for me, trying to do a good thing.
So I didn't want to take it back and hurt his feelings. Now I'm having
second thoughts.

[QUAD-L] Windows Vista and Voice Recognition System

2009-03-22 Thread LadyNotes
My computer crashed and I had to get a new one. The computer came with
Windows Vista and a voice recognition program already loaded onto it. Has
anyone
had any luck with this voice recognition system? It doesn't type into sites
that I visit regularly. The only site I've had luck in is Windows Live
Messenger and Facebook. It does not type in instant message on AOL, and I'm
still
finding other areas where it will not type. Making corrections are a pain in
the
ass! Dragon Naturally Speaking was MUCH easier to use. I thought it was me
so I went back and read the instructions over and over again. Now I have to
get use to putting in punctuations. I just HATE it!! And it has the nerve to
not let you install Dragon Naturally Speaking!.

The Windows Vista I am learning to use it. It is different, but I am
learning. I had my files saved from my old computer and put on this one when
I
purchased it, though finding them is no easy task.. Has anyone else been
using
Windows Vista and this voice recognition program? What do you think of it?
Do you have any recommendations?

Re: [QUAD-L] Re: Love Those Seinfield Shows-OT

2009-01-25 Thread LadyNotes
A mobile arm support is an OT item. I used the support when I was initially
in the hospital, three years ago, and it was very helpful for me then. Now
that I have my own, which has recently been installed on my wheelchair, I'm
hoping to receive the same or better results with it. My only problem is
having someone to correctly set it up for me doing the day. Because there are
so
many adjustments that can be made on the support, it is crucial to have it
initially adjusted properly so the only adjustments to be made later will be
adding or removing a rubber band.

My left arm is the only arm I have any mobility in, and it is very little
mobility. I am unable to raise my arm any higher than my bust line. But with
the device. I am able to turn the light switch off and on, operate a door
knob, retrieve mail from the kitchen counter, and even work on my beaded
jewelry projects.

It may not seem like a lot, but it allows me a significant amount of
independence by having it available to use.

One of my goals was to be able to feed myself. I have been working on that
and have been able to eat most meals without assistance, yeah! I had to have

[QUAD-L] Health Update

2008-07-13 Thread LadyNotes

Hello my friend,

Just a short note to let you know that I am currently in the hospital. I am
having a problem with swelling to my Baclofen pump area.

So far I have here to CAT scans and ultrasound and scheduled for an MRI.
They still don't know what's causing the swelling. The one good thing that I
am getting out of this, is that I am scheduled for some more physical and
occupational therapy.

Because I haven't been on the computer since Wednesday, the day I was
admitted to the hospital, I have a ton of e-mail to read. I probably won't
send
much e-mail, but I will try to keep up with what's going on.

Keep me in your prayers,

2008-07-03 Thread LadyNotes
Good Afternoon,

Many of you have asked my age, and how I manage.

I am now 51 years old. I spent my 48th birthday in the hospital. It is
very difficult to manage, because maybe not as many of you with TM may
experience it, but many quadriplegics have experience with lack or loss of
support
from friends, family and community members. It is so hurtful and
disappointing
when friends, and especially family does not help or support you.

If not for the help and support of my mother and husband and my strong faith
in God, I would have surely lost my mind by now.

I truly appreciate the support of my online friends.

[QUAD-L] Three-Year Mark

2008-07-02 Thread LadyNotes
Today, marks three years since I experienced that terrible pain in my neck
and arm that made me know, that my life would be changed for ever. That was
the day, that I became a quadriplegic due to Transverse Myelitis. Three
years ago this day, about this time. I was being rushed to the emergency room
in
St. Paul, Minnesota with sudden paralysis of my arms and legs (I thought).
I later found that I was paralyzed from the neck down.

This whole ordeal was extremely frightening for me and my husband, because
we were out of town and not sure how we were going to get back home. We were
later flown back in a life flight jet, to the University of Michigan Hospital
in Ann Arbor Michigan, were I spent a while in intensive care, on a
ventilator.

I spent three months in the University of Michigan Hospital, after which I
went to a nursing facility for extended rehab. After the rehab. I went back
into the hospital to have my Baclofen pump put in. I received a short period
of rehab after the surgery.

After one year and 23 days, I returned home, where I have been since. Being
at home has been a struggle for me because I need 24 hour care, but cannot
afford to pay someone to be here around the clock. My mother has been here
helping me out since I've been home, but she is elderly and ill herself. I am
currently checking into assisted living facilities. I think this will be the
best move for us all.

I really commend those of you who are able to stay home alone. If I just
had use of my hands, it could be a whole different situation, but my right
side
is completely paralyzed, and I have limited use of my left arm and hand
(pretty much useless). I have to contend with all of the issues that a
quadriplegic faces. The only thing I haven't had to deal with, (Praise God!)
are the
pressure sores. I have not had to deal with that.

Happy Birthday to all of the July babies!

2008-05-21 Thread LadyNotes
Corie,

It sounds as though we've been down the same path. I've tried all the meds
that you've mentioned, with all the same results. I haven't had any pain
medication put into my pump since I've had it. I will inquire about the
Prialt.
I've read up on it, and it sounds pretty scary, but so did some of the
other medicines that I've taken.

My Baclofen pump works very well for controlling the spasticity, but it will
be an bonus, if I can get pain medication put into my pump that actually
helps the pain. Thanks for this information. I will talk to my doctor about
it.

Rob,

I understand exactly what you mean about the pain. I am in excruciating
pain, 24/7 also, given it a thought of taking the cowardly way out. It's
terrible when you have no quality of life. I currently take 400 mg of Lyrica
twice
daily, 60 mg of Cymbalta, once a day, Vicodin three times a day, and 50 mcg
Fentanyl patch every three days. This still doesn't control the pain. I had
considered titrating off all my medication, but the withdrawal is a bitch!
I don't know what to do. I am so stressed out from the pain that I have
started clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth. My dentist ground my teeth
down
to relieve some of the pressure. The pain makes me totally exhausted. I
will be contacting my doctor this afternoon about pain management. I am
desperate.

Re: [QUAD-L] Bed...

2008-04-24 Thread LadyNotes

Tammy Lou,

Although the type of bed used is very important, the type of linen can be
just as important. When I was in the hospital, their sheets was so rough that
it was difficult for me to lay on them. I had to be turned more than usual. I
find that using sheets with a high thread count can be very comforting. The
higher the thread count, the more costly the sheets are. I try to get a
thread count of 500 to 800. Eight hundred thread count sheets are very
expensive, but they are smooth as butter. Although my mattress is just a
vinyl
covered mattress, nothing special, the sheets I put on it, makes a world of
difference. Just keep this in mind when thinking about the comfort of your
bed.

[QUAD-L] Medical Help

2008-04-18 Thread LadyNotes
It really amazes me at the number of people who write to this list asking
for medical advice or if they should go to the doctor to get something checked
out. As helpful as everyone on this list tries to be, I don't think anyone
here can offer real medical advice to someone without knowing their medical
history or the severity of the medical issue in question. Maybe it's just me,
but if ANYTHING is out of the ordinary for me, I call the doctor's office and
schedule an appointment, unless of course, I need to go to emergency. I
would think that after most of what us quads have been through, we should not
hesitate to get medical attention. It could mean the difference between life
and death. If it isn't anything that severe, at least we've had it checked
out and know what's going on. At least that's my two cents worth.

with me on each visit. I was very satisfied with the results.

Re: [QUAD-L] Anybody nerve senitive to noises?

2008-04-13 Thread LadyNotes
Bobbie,

I find that I am very sensitive to any type of noise. I tend to like things
quiet. Any type of noise is very irritating to me and I also startle
easily.

Re: [QUAD-L] repeat UTI infections --- Hiospital I.V. or PICC line ?

2008-03-31 Thread LadyNotes
Dan,

Are you saying that you have a suprapubic catheter now or are you asking if
that will help?

I have trouble with a lot of UTIs also. My urologist does not suggest a
suprapubic catheter. He said it would not make a difference as far as UTIs go.

I have had a couple of pic lines. The first I got while in ICU, so I don't
remember the ease of getting it, but the second one I got in the hospital
prior to surgery. It was one of the most horrifying and painful experiences I
have had while in a hospital! It was clearly the technicians error, because
after many failed tries, I told him that I could no longer stand the pain, and
I did not want the pic line. He screwed the one arm up so bad, he wanted to
start on the other arm. I told him he had one try, and that was it. He got
it on the first try. My other arm was so full of holes and eventually
became very hard and set up a blood clot, for which I had to be treated.

I am sure you will have much better luck than I did. I think Murphy should
be my middle name. If something bad can happen to me, it will.

Bobbie,

Exactly, what does a Mediation Instructor do? I mean, what do you mediate?

Re: [QUAD-L] Standing Therapy to Prevent Osteoporosis

2008-03-30 Thread LadyNotes
Gary,

I had standing therapy in the standing frame for a short period of time (one
month, twice weekly) in order to prepare me for a walking therapy. I had to
be able to stand in the standing frame for at least 45 minutes without my
blood pressure plummeting before attempting to use the walking machine. This
was the extent of my standing therapy.

I'm happy to say that I succeeded in the standing frame and am currently on
a walking machine called the Locomat _YouTube - Locomat_
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ryp5YavgO2gfeature=related) I certainly hope
this will be a help
for me.

I have been in my wheelchair for nearly 3 years. I do not have
osteoporosis, but after being in the chair for so long, it was good to try to
stand.
