You are right in suspecting that they have come from me. Someone has hijacked my e-mail account and is sending out e-mails in my name. I spoke with the AOL people and they told me to change my password. This has not helped. I was trying not to have to change my e-mail address since I have had it for over 20 years and everyone I know has it. I am still trying to find out what else there is I'd need to do. Dana, I have Medicare as my primary insurance and blue cross as my secondary. I have a home healthcare nurse, who comes out every three weeks to change my Foley catheter. I'm pretty sure that Medicare is the one who covers the cost. Or maybe they just covered there 80% and Blue Cross covers the other 20%. However it's done, I'm not billed for it. I have been doing this for the past five years. If I suspect I have a urinary tract infection, the nurse takes a urine sample and has the results that my primary care doctor. I've tried to make calls for other doctors and most don't take Medicaid. Even though I have Blue Cross Blue Shield and Medicare right now, my insurance will be changing and Medicare will be first in Blue Cross Blue Shield second in February when my stepmom retires. I've been at this same same group or an quite a number of years and they accept because of long-standing patient. Most doctors are no longer accepting. I went in the hospital once, they said, I tested positive and every time I've been in the hospital since then, it's like being in quarantine. He wrote the legislation and pushed it through the state legislature to be on a two year grant program, I do not know who writes the grants when they need renewing It is pretty awesome as it allows for up to five HRS per day, seven days a week. It also allow non medical personnel to handle bowel care, cathing, and wound care after being signed off by an RN. Otherwise Nevada legislature states that all that sort of thing must be done by trained medical personnel. Because I have been in the field of mental retardation and mental health I was aware of this program before I broke my neck. So it enabled me to come home from rehab, 3 1/2 months after I broke my neck, and after the first 30 days of Home Health paid for by the insurance company I was able to be accepted into this program. Now I advocate for newly injured and encourage the families to apply just as soon as they know when their loved one is coming home. It certainly helps to make the transition easier. I pay someone to come in the morning to get me washed and dressed and into my chair. The remainder of the day, my 80 year old mother, who is in poor health, is here with me. I pay someone to come in the evening, to put me into bed. During the night time, my mother and husband are here, but they both sleep upstairs, and I am downstairs in the family room, with my cell phone headset on in case of an emergency. During the nights, I sleep on my back entire time and sit in my chair from 8 AM to 9 PM. I've been fortunate to this point (five years post as of tomorrow July 2) but now my bottom is starting to break down and I need even more care and attention that I don't have. My husband does not want to be a caregiver. He provides for what I need, but is not very attentive, which is why I need assisted-living. Glenn Henry, thank you for replying to my question. I really appreciate you dissecting my e-mail and answering in portions. That helped me a great deal. I have decided not to have the surgery. It is too invasive for me. As of the present. I am not having any major health issues, and I would like to keep it that way. I feel that, if I have this surgery. I'll just have all types of problems afterwards. It's not like it's reversible, and I can just change it back. if I start having a problem. Forty-four years with an indwelling catheter is a long time. That's the longest I've ever heard of anyone keeping a catheter. I'm sure you must have been devastated, when the doctor told you, you had cancer. Thank God for His interventions. I am so glad that you did not have cancer, and that you decided to get a second opinion. If I was still thinking about having the surgery, I would have gotten a second opinion, also. I am a male, and my urethra has eroded severely. My urologist says that my urethra is eroding, and suggests I have a procedure called a urostomy. . I would do a lot of research before I make any decisions. Five years ago I went to a urologist, he was smart and cocky and told me that he knew that he would find tumors and bladder cancer. People just don't live 47 years with out big problems. Well, needless to say after he examined me one of the areas biopsied came back low malignancy potential and he informed me that I had cancer. We were scared, but God intervened and I feel my life was saved. He wanted me to have a urostomy and my bladder was to be removed. The next day I got very ill, he wanted to speed things along, but I felt that my symptoms were that of AD. He said there was no way and I immediately started to see red flags. I called for a second opinion, the urologist said there was no hurry and that I should go to John Hopkins urology department. That is exactly what I did. After meeting with the number two man in the department, he recommended viewing the biopsy slides and we were to return in three weeks. I returned and the first thing he said is I have good news, you do not have cancer. He saw no reason for me to not use the catheter. He performed a procedure called Urodynamic, which measures the amount of urine your bladder can hold. Mine is holding less than an ounce of urine.. Mine holds about the same. So now he wants to remove my bladder, and make me a new one using part of my small intestine. During this procedure, both ureters are relocated, a new bladder is made, and urine as directed from the body through a stoma in the abdomen, which connects to a bag that adheres to the skin. I am going to the hospital on Tuesday to have an MRI, to make sure that it's safe for me to have this procedure because I also have Crohn's disease and disturbing my small intestine, may cause my Crohn's to flareup (which is a very terrible thing). . One Big issue is UTI's and with this procedure name may be more prevalent. My dilemma is this: I have to choose between having this very invasive surgery, and all of that may come after it including infection from many sources, including the new bladder, ureter relocation, the stoma, and skin irritation from the adhesive for the bag, and not to mention the Crohn's flareup Or. I can wear incontinent briefs. I also had problems getting wet when I went to the hospital. Since I has gone to using 2 ditropan 5mg each day morning and evening, and started to take two tablets

I can wear incontinent briefs which I don't have anyone to change them, because there's just me and my 80 year old mother, living together. She won't be able to change them throughout the day. I have an aide comes in the morning and gives me a bed bath and get me in my wheelchair. The rest of the day, there's just me and my mom here until bedtime (around 9:00 PM) when my nighttime aide comes to put me to bed. My catheter bag is usually not emptied from morning to night. My mom cannot handle me to change briefs, and if they're left on, I would have all types of sores. Does anyone on this list have a urostomy? If so, how is it working for you? I would love to hear what others have to say regarding my dilemma. Naomi. C-4 quadriplegic due to Transverse Myelitis since July 2, 2005 Have a Blessed Day, Naomi

They were so ice, he was trying to sit me back up first, but was so careful. Like he was oing to break me. Then they were able to lift my front wheels back up on the idewalk. Then they asked if I needed them to walk home with me :-) After 28 years, that was the first time going off a curb. Once my 5/6 year old iece was on my lap driving and we went off our curb going fast, but it is the urved/slopped kind. I'm just curious as to how other people manage. I live in my own home, but I do not have access to a shower and I need someone available 24 hours a day. Re: [QUAD-L] Windows Vista and Voice Recognition System
I feel you! Working with this voice recognition system, SUCKS! !! I was used to working with Naturallyspeaking. I am getting better at using it, but I still don't like it. It doesn't type in all of the programs that I'm used to. I have to open word pad and type in there and then cut and paste. It is a pain in the ass. My husband bought it for me, trying to do a good thing. So I didn't want to take it back and hurt his feelings. Now I'm having second thoughts. [QUAD-L] Windows Vista and Voice Recognition System
My computer crashed and I had to get a new one. The computer came with Windows Vista and a voice recognition program already loaded onto it. Has anyone had any luck with this voice recognition system? It doesn't type into sites that I visit regularly. The only site I've had luck in is Windows Live Messenger and Facebook. It does not type in instant message on AOL, and I'm still finding other areas where it will not type. Making corrections are a pain in the ass! Dragon Naturally Speaking was MUCH easier to use. I thought it was me so I went back and read the instructions over and over again. Now I have to get use to putting in punctuations. I just HATE it!! And it has the nerve to not let you install Dragon Naturally Speaking!. The Windows Vista I am learning to use it. It is different, but I am learning. I had my files saved from my old computer and put on this one when I purchased it, though finding them is no easy task.. Has anyone else been using Windows Vista and this voice recognition program? What do you think of it? Do you have any recommendations? Naomi C-4 Quadriplegic, since July 2, 2005 Due to Transverse Myelitis **Feeling the pinch at the grocery store? Make dinner for $10 or less. Re: [QUAD-L] Re: Love Those Seinfield Shows-OT
A mobile arm support is an OT item. I used the support when I was initially in the hospital, three years ago, and it was very helpful for me then. Now that I have my own, which has recently been installed on my wheelchair, I'm hoping to receive the same or better results with it. My only problem is having someone to correctly set it up for me doing the day. Because there are so many adjustments that can be made on the support, it is crucial to have it initially adjusted properly so the only adjustments to be made later will be adding or removing a rubber band. My left arm is the only arm I have any mobility in, and it is very little mobility. I am unable to raise my arm any higher than my bust line. But with the device. I am able to turn the light switch off and on, operate a door knob, retrieve mail from the kitchen counter, and even work on my beaded jewelry projects. It may not seem like a lot, but it allows me a significant amount of independence by having it available to use. [QUAD-L] Health Update
Hello my friend, Just a short note to let you know that I am currently in the hospital. I am having a problem with swelling to my Baclofen pump area. So far I have here to CAT scans and ultrasound and scheduled for an MRI. They still don't know what's causing the swelling. The one good thing that I am getting out of this, is that I am scheduled for some more physical and occupational therapy. Because I haven't been on the computer since Wednesday, the day I was admitted to the hospital, I have a ton of e-mail to read. I probably won't send much e-mail, but I will try to keep up with what's going on. [QUAD-L] Re: [TMIC] Three-Year Mark
Good Afternoon, Many of you have asked my age, and how I manage. I am now 51 years old. I spent my 48th birthday in the hospital. It is very difficult to manage, because maybe not as many of you with TM may experience it, but many quadriplegics have experience with lack or loss of support from friends, family and community members. It is so hurtful and disappointing when friends, and especially family does not help or support you. If not for the help and support of my mother and husband and my strong faith in God, I would have surely lost my mind by now. I truly appreciate the support of my online friends. [QUAD-L] Three-Year Mark
Today, marks three years since I experienced that terrible pain in my neck and arm that made me know, that my life would be changed for ever. That was the day, that I became a quadriplegic due to Transverse Myelitis. Three years ago this day, about this time. I was being rushed to the emergency room in St. Paul, Minnesota with sudden paralysis of my arms and legs (I thought). I later found that I was paralyzed from the neck down. This whole ordeal was extremely frightening for me and my husband, because we were out of town and not sure how we were going to get back home. We were later flown back in a life flight jet, to the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor Michigan, were I spent a while in intensive care, on a ventilator. I spent three months in the University of Michigan Hospital, after which I went to a nursing facility for extended rehab. After the rehab. I went back into the hospital to have my Baclofen pump put in. I received a short period of rehab after the surgery. After one year and 23 days, I returned home, where I have been since. Being at home has been a struggle for me because I need 24 hour care, but cannot afford to pay someone to be here around the clock. My mother has been here helping me out since I've been home, but she is elderly and ill herself. I am currently checking into assisted living facilities. I think this will be the best move for us all. I really commend those of you who are able to stay home alone. If I just had use of my hands, it could be a whole different situation, but my right side is completely paralyzed, and I have limited use of my left arm and hand (pretty much useless). I have to contend with all of the issues that a quadriplegic faces. The only thing I haven't had to deal with, (Praise God!) are the pressure sores. I have not had to deal with that. Happy Birthday to all of the July babies! Naomi C4-incomplete, quadriplegic since July 2005 due to Transverse Myelitis **Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. Re: [QUAD-L] pain pump
Corie, It sounds as though we've been down the same path. I've tried all the meds that you've mentioned, with all the same results. I haven't had any pain medication put into my pump since I've had it. I will inquire about the Prialt. I've read up on it, and it sounds pretty scary, but so did some of the other medicines that I've taken. My Baclofen pump works very well for controlling the spasticity, but it will be an bonus, if I can get pain medication put into my pump that actually helps the pain. Thanks for this information. I will talk to my doctor about it. Naomi C4-incomplete, quadriplegic since July 2005 due to Transverse Myelitis **Get trade secrets for amazing burgers. Watch Cooking with Tyler Florence on AOL Food. Re: [QUAD-L] neurontin
Rob, I understand exactly what you mean about the pain. I am in excruciating pain, 24/7 also, given it a thought of taking the cowardly way out. It's terrible when you have no quality of life. I currently take 400 mg of Lyrica twice daily, 60 mg of Cymbalta, once a day, Vicodin three times a day, and 50 mcg Fentanyl patch every three days. This still doesn't control the pain. I had considered titrating off all my medication, but the withdrawal is a bitch! I don't know what to do. I am so stressed out from the pain that I have started clenching my jaw and grinding my teeth. My dentist ground my teeth down to relieve some of the pressure. The pain makes me totally exhausted. I will be contacting my doctor this afternoon about pain management. I am desperate. Re: [QUAD-L] My name's Luis
Cullen, I know as bad as you want to sometimes, you just cannot forget the day that had such an impact on your life. I don't know if it's appropriate to say, happy anniversary, so I'll just say, thank God that you have seen 11 more years. I wish you well. Re: [QUAD-L] Remote Controls
I lay my bed remote across my lap. I lie on my back when sleeping and I can only use the left-hand so, I position the remote where I can reach it with that left-hand. Re: [QUAD-L] Bed...
Mark, Flannel sheets are a nice, but for those of us who have our own personal summer, power surge, or whatever name you give to your hot flashes, they can be a bit warm to use year-round. Re: [QUAD-L] Bed...
Tammy Lou, Although the type of bed used is very important, the type of linen can be just as important. When I was in the hospital, their sheets was so rough that it was difficult for me to lay on them. I had to be turned more than usual. I find that using sheets with a high thread count can be very comforting. The higher the thread count, the more costly the sheets are. I try to get a thread count of 500 to 800. Eight hundred thread count sheets are very expensive, but they are smooth as butter. Although my mattress is just a vinyl covered mattress, nothing special, the sheets I put on it, makes a world of difference. Just keep this in mind when thinking about the comfort of your bed. Tammie Lou, I just use a folded flat sheet, same thread count as the fitted sheet. Naomi C4-incomplete, quadriplegic since July 2005 due to Transverse Myelitis **Need a new ride? Check out the largest site for U.S. used car listings at AOL Autos. (http://autos.aol.com/used?NCID=aolcmp0030002851)
[QUAD-L] Medical Help
It really amazes me at the number of people who write to this list asking for medical advice or if they should go to the doctor to get something checked out. As helpful as everyone on this list tries to be, I don't think anyone here can offer real medical advice to someone without knowing their medical history or the severity of the medical issue in question. Maybe it's just me, but if ANYTHING is out of the ordinary for me, I call the doctor's office and schedule an appointment, unless of course, I need to go to emergency. I would think that after most of what us quads have been through, we should not hesitate to get medical attention. It could mean the difference between life and death. If it isn't anything that severe, at least we've had it checked out and know what's going on. At least that's my two cents worth. Re: [QUAD-L] Medical Help
W, I have used the services of a nurse practitioner, when the doctor wasn't available. The service was exceptional. She seemed to have more time to spend with me on each visit. I was very satisfied with the results. Naomi C4-incomplete, quadriplegic since July 2005 due to Transverse Myelitis **Need a new ride? Re: [QUAD-L] repeat UTI infections --- Hiospital I.V. or PICC line ?
Dan, Are you saying that you have a suprapubic catheter now or are you asking if that will help? I have trouble with a lot of UTIs also. My urologist does not suggest a suprapubic catheter. He said it would not make a difference as far as UTIs go. I have had a couple of pic lines. The first I got while in ICU, so I don't remember the ease of getting it, but the second one I got in the hospital prior to surgery. It was one of the most horrifying and painful experiences I have had while in a hospital! It was clearly the technicians error, because after many failed tries, I told him that I could no longer stand the pain, and I did not want the pic line. He screwed the one arm up so bad, he wanted to start on the other arm. I told him he had one try, and that was it. He got it on the first try. My other arm was so full of holes and eventually became very hard and set up a blood clot, for which I had to be treated. I am sure you will have much better luck than I did. I think Murphy should be my middle name. If something bad can happen to me, it will. Re: [QUAD-L] Standing Therapy to Prevent Osteoporosis
Gary, I had standing therapy in the standing frame for a short period of time (one month, twice weekly) in order to prepare me for a walking therapy. I had to be able to stand in the standing frame for at least 45 minutes without my blood pressure plummeting before attempting to use the walking machine. This was the extent of my standing therapy. I'm happy to say that I succeeded in the standing frame and am currently on a walking machine called the Locomat _YouTube - Locomat_ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ryp5YavgO2gfeature=related) I certainly hope this will be a help for me. I have been in my wheelchair for nearly 3 years. I do not have osteoporosis, but after being in the chair for so long, it was good to try to stand.
