Hi everyone,
Over the last few months I have really been getting into interactive
fiction games, and really enjoy the old text adventures. As a result that
has me thinking of some possible game projects after Mysteries of the
Ancients and Raceway are released.
One idea I have been thinking of is producing a handful of USA Games text
adventures for Mac, Windows, and Linux that is similar to classic if
titles. With web based games like Sryth around I have discovered the
classic DND text adventure style game still can be quite addictive given
enough adventures and puzzles in it. What do you all think of this idea?

Cheers!

in my view we have enough text adventures though look at the
interactive fiction archive.
I prefer audio games and would prefer a 3d like tomb rader style game
as playing through a text adventure in my opinion gets boring after a
few days

Hi all,

Well, it's yet another browser RPG. And it really is an RPG.

It's got pretty good story too. What I also like about this is that
it has a nice battle system, where in a dungeon you fight hoards of
monsters until you leave the battle or die, so I gained about 2
levels without really loosing much health.

More things I like about it? The fact that the help files are
detailed and when getting help for skills, it says very high malee
attack, instead of a malee attack that does X

It also has an accessible map. The only disadvantage that I see so
far right now is in the quest description when you receive a quest,
you have the oppertunity to jump back to the questgivers location to
complete the quest. That's not accessible because the main links,
logout, the different tabs as they call them we don't know which
tab we're on, isn't labled. All it says is clear, however I have
managed to complete the first quest because the action menu is
accessible talking to NPCs, shopping, etc.

I'll be signing up to the forums in a bit to inform Arren, the
developer, about these issues, and hopefully he'd be so nice as to
fix them.

I think if this game does become fully accessible it'll be just as
good as Sryth is.

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread dark

Hi tom.

Firstly, I'm a huge If fan myself, and have just been getting back into
playing, which is great.

I can highly recommend the tads games worlds apart and Bable, the Zcode
games Pytho's mask, and the djinni Chronicles and anything you can find by
Paul Obrian.

While I'd be intI've also been trying out some of Malinche's commercial
titles (well the demo's of them anyway), and their not half bad, though a
litle frustrating in parts.

For an honest opinion on whether Usa games should write If though, to be
honest Tom, your one of the very few people with the knowhow to create
actual audio games.

While I'm sure you could come up with some great If, as there are literally
thousands of If games available, but a distinct lack of audio games
(especially in certain genre areas), I'd personally suggest that your
tallents could be more usefully employed elsewhere.

Obviously the decision is up to you, and as I said, I said this is nothing
to do with the quality of your If writing, - it's just a supply and
demand thing.

On the other hand, if you were planning something multimedia, custom
programmed as opposed to one of the standard If languages, perhaps a
sort of interactive fiction in audio (the sort of thing Chillingham should
have been), then I think it's a great idea.

Hi Dark,
Well, seeing as this is open source the nice thing is any developer is
allowed to modify the source, and make whatever changes as needed. I
technically could do it myself if I had the time to sit down with it.
Right now the issues seam to be on the Windows side of things as I do play
Freeciv from time to time on Linux and Orca seams to do better with it
than Jaws, Hal, or Window Eyes. One thing I'd want to make sure of is any
access issues that get changed should effect the Windows port and not the
Linux version as other than a few gripes here and there the linux version
is ok. They have a Mac version as well, but can't test that versionwithout
a MacBook.
Anyway, as you pointed out generally the open source community is open to
accessibility changes. They aren't like a commercial group of die-hard
developers and most of them are just your average Joe who writes this
program on the side. If you have programming skills they will let you on
board to make whatever access changes are necessarily provided it doesn't
effect their own use of the product.

dark wrote:

Hi Tom.

I'll look over freeciv with Hal, and then have a think and contact the
devs.

In my experience, people who are highly dedicated to projects like
freeciv are often incredibly happy that their pet creations will be
accessible, and quite willing to make a few changes here and there.

Fully rewriting the front end or adding complete sapi support might be a
bit of a big thing to ask, - but if there were some more minimal
changes, eg, changes in layout or labling which could help, I've
often found that small dedicated groups of developers are incredibly
happy to make such changes.

Actually, in these sorts of situations, I often think working with the
creators of games and programs like Freeciv is an incredibly good thing
for everyone, and better than either A, giving up on something entirely,
or B, trying to just keep it within the Vi gaming community.

Just my personal thoughts on this subject after being in a good many of
those sorts of conversations with devs.

Hmm I have had this issue with my realtech hd card.
It does work in normal mode ok but it seems to do weird things to the
system, making it rather unstable.

I am sure its the stupid soundcard, I hate realtech.
And at first I liked it.
Hmph.
It ran ok on my soundmax system.

Hi.

Well I'm finally trying out the Klango player, and it's not working

Running it in normal mode I get the first menue with sapi speaking (though
I'm fairly certain not all the sounds), but then going to logue in or
create an account, or indeed anything bar exit causes complete and
utter silence and deadness that force me to quit the program.

Running in Dx mode i get menue sounds, and no sapi speech.

Apparently the player doesn't work with realtech hardware soundcards,
which I believe mine is, odd, as it's the first 3D audio application
I've ever! had trouble with at all.

How irritating, I rather fancied the media catalogue.

2008-12-07 Thread Claudio

Hi,
I also prefer audiogames instead of textadventure.
I don't like it when jaws talks to me what's going on in the game...
I love it when I can hear sounds.
Best regards,

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,

Quote
in my view we have enough text adventures though look at the interactive
fiction

archive.
End quote

Well, yes and no. While it is true there are a lot of interactive
fiction games there aren't many that are fully RPG games on the level of
Nethack or Sryth. Not to mention one of my gripes with the if games that
are out there they often require a special interpreter like frotz, tads,
etc which isn't always the best for the kind of full blown RPG text
adventures I am thinking of.

Quote
I prefer audio games and would prefer a 3d like tomb rader style game...
End quote

We still have that in the works. However, I have spent so much time on
the Genesis engine the passed few months I was hoping to do something a
bit different for a change. I can always come back to the full 3D FPS
games when I feel rested.

Quote
Playing through a text adventure in my opinion gets boring after a few days
End quote

i guess that is personal opinion there. Some RPG adventures like Nethack
can keep me glued to it for days and days. It is pretty adictive in my
opinion and it doesn't even have sounds and music.

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,

Snip
For an honest opinion on whether Usa games should write If though, to
be honest
Tom, your one of the very few people with the knowhow to create actual
audio games.
While I'm sure you could come up with some great If, as there are
literally thousands
of If games available, but a distinct lack of audio games (especially
in certain
genre areas), I'd personally suggest that your tallents could be more
usefully employed

elsewhere.
End snip

Well, I wasn't suggesting that I would quit making audio games
altogether. More this would be a little side project to crank out in
between big audio game productions like Tomb Hunter, Raceway, and other
projects I have on the things to do list. It would just be a fun thing
to do for, well, for fun.

Quote
On the other hand, if you were planning something multimedia, custom
programmed
as opposed to one of the standard If languages, perhaps a sort of
interactive
fiction in audio (the sort of thing Chillingham should have been), then
I think

it's a great idea.
End quote

I was not planning on using any of the interactive fiction languages
like Inform Tads, etc. I was definitely planning on something custom
that was both multi-platform and far more into roll playing with stats,
races, multiple adventures, etdc.
As far as audio goes I wasn't planning on using audio with the game, but
it could be done. The only issue is finding all the sound effects
required for the various monsters and characters in the game. I was
hoping to go full Dungions and Dragons RPG with various classes,
creatures, and many adventures. Obviously initial versions would not
have that many adventures but it would be an ongoing project with new
adventures being added as I think them up or if people submit ideas for
the game.

Cheers.

[Audyssey] MOTA was Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Will,
Mysteries of the Ancients Alpha 1 is in private testing as we speak. I
am planning on releasing Alpha 2 to my test team sometime Sunday/Monday
once I take care of a couple of nasty bugs that was discovered in Alpha
1 this week.
As far as a release Window goes I am playing it by ear. I would like
nothing more than to have a demo out by Christmas, but that all depends
on how much the test team and I get done with the game between now and
then. There have been many bugs in the engine, and I have been working
like a mad man to fix them all and make the demo really stable for end
user consumption. So all I can say is I hope to have something soon, but
it is out when it is ready.

Hi.

Well I'm finally trying out the Klango player, and it's not working
well at all.

Running it in normal mode I get the first menue with sapi speaking
(though

I'm fairly certain not all the sounds), but then going to logue in or
create
an account, or indeed anything bar exit causes complete and utter
silence and deadness that force me to quit the program.

Running in Dx mode i get menue sounds, and no sapi speech.

Apparently the player doesn't work with realtech hardware
soundcards,
which I believe mine is, odd, as it's the first 3D audio
application

I've ever! had trouble with at all.

How irritating, I rather fancied the media catalogue.

Beware the Grue!

Actually there is at least one z-code game I can think of with RPG
mechanics. Called hmm... can't remember exactly, but something with wumpus
in it I think. Anyway its sort of like the old hunt the wumpus game, only
with a lot more levels, a massive set of caverns to explore, and a lot of
levelling to do and items and weapons to earn. Unfortunately I could never
really get into it since the plot is weird and you start out as some weird
news reporter or something, but ah well. There's a lot more RPG style
games for tads, the most notable of which is magocracy, which I found
rather interesting. You play a hedge wizard, aka a wizard with almost no
magical power or at best slight of hand elusions or hardly useful spells,
and you have to go up against 4 powerful wizards, traps, and monsters
within the castle and try to earn the crown. It takes some strategy and
careful use of the rpg mechanics. These can be found on ifarchive, along
with a few others. Usually if they have some sort of rpg mechanics or
battle system its mensioned in the description.

The Eamon adventure games are pretty much a mix of rpg complete with hack

tads, the most notable of which is magocracy, which I found rather
interesting. You play a hedge wizard, aka a wizard with almost no
magical power or at best slight of hand elusions or hardly useful
spells, and you have to go up against 4 powerful wizards, traps,
and monsters within the castle and try to earn the crown. It takes
some strategy and careful use of the rpg mechanics. These can be

some sort of rpg mechanics or battle system its mensioned in the

There are a ton of games like this, they're all over the net, and they're
boring really. The crimes don't really have descriptions or anything,
it's all based on stats. People say Torn City is the best. People say
Ommerta is the best. I don't know if I've found a Mafia game that I
actually like. Not one has caught my interest.

Hi Dark,
Yes, exactly what I am thinking of. Basically, a stand alone RPG game
similar to Nethack or Sryth that is custom written in C++ and runs on
Mac, Linux, and Windows. I have the official Dungion and Dragons rule

2008-12-07 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

as I said earlier, i'd deffinately be in favor of that sort of project, and
think it would be a great thing to have submitted, - particularly if you
could include mechanics unique to an offline system, such as more random
encounter elements and dynamic context based story.

I assumed when you first mentioned creating If you were talking about
writing in inform or similar, hence my initial reluctance to the idea.

But as you can imagine, now you've explained a bit more I'm all for it!

In fact, as reguards creating adventures, it might be sort of fun to have a
platform similar to the eamon system where people could submit their own
adventures to the game to be accessed from a central llocale, - though
this migh involve more work in the genre creation end of things than you
might wish to put in for a fun project, allbeit one which will be fun
for all concerned, players included I think, lol!

Hi Dark,

Snip
For an honest opinion on whether Usa games should write If though, to be
honest
Tom, your one of the very few people with the knowhow to create actual
audio games.
While I'm sure you could come up with some great If, as there are
literally thousands
of If games available, but a distinct lack of audio games (especially in
certain
genre areas), I'd personally suggest that your tallents could be more
usefully employed

elsewhere.
End snip

Well, I wasn't suggesting that I would quit making audio games altogether.
More this would be a little side project to crank out in between big audio
game productions like Tomb Hunter, Raceway, and other projects I have on
the things to do list. It would just be a fun thing to do for, well, for
fun.

Quote
On the other hand, if you were planning something multimedia, custom
programmed
as opposed to one of the standard If languages, perhaps a sort of
interactive
fiction in audio (the sort of thing Chillingham should have been), then I
think

it's a great idea.
End quote

I was not planning on using any of the interactive fiction languages like
Inform Tads, etc. I was definitely planning on something custom that was
both multi-platform and far more into roll playing with stats, races,
multiple adventures, etdc.
As far as audio goes I wasn't planning on using audio with the game, but
it could be done. The only issue is finding all the sound effects required
for the various monsters and characters in the game. I was hoping to go
full Dungions and Dragons RPG with various classes, creatures, and many
adventures. Obviously initial versions would not have that many adventures
but it would be an ongoing project with new adventures being added as I
think them up or if people submit ideas for the game.

Cheers.

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

Out of interest, which rules do you have?

The third edition rules made a lot more sense I thought and were much easier
to master, and probably the program, sinse they included things like
positive armour classes which add to defence rather than remove from attack,
though I'm not sure how available the 3rd Ed rule books are (I only know the
rules from having played the game in tabletop).

Also, I'm personally becoming slightly disenchanted with the kill monsters
for general Xp mechanic.

If you gain combat xp purely from the physical act of sswinging your weapons
around, or have a quest to slay a hoard of goblins, or are a good character
ridding the world of evil creatures fair enough, but just getting random
amounts of xp for clobbering things as in DD seems to me rather odd.

My brother did once tell me of a starwars D20 game he played in, which at
one stage had a party of Jedi going wooky hunting sinse they needed to level
up their force powers, and had worked out that wookies were A, easily
killable, and B, would give great xp rewards.

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread dark
I think I'm actually going to get in contact with the developers of Eamon
delux and see what might be worked out, sinse it did look Awsome indeed, and
with the text would be incredibly accessible if it could A, run in a window
to comply with hal, and B, stop showing me random pages of scary looking
code every time I try to do something with a character (it didn't do this at
the start, it only started doing this when i started mucking about with
console window size).

Just because you cannot E-mail someone is no reason to start ignoring the
hard work they've put into creating their games.

It's not as if liam's dropped off the face of the earth. Heck! I asked him

original male, about which he's being great.

I find it sad, not to mention worrying how soon your mind leaps to
cracking a game, when there is absolutely no need to.

Appologising is fair enough. But I really suggest you leave cracking
audiogames be, sinse the markit really is too small to take it, and the devs
need every penny to carry on making games, and indeed carry on paying

Re: [Audyssey] Klango not working

2008-12-07 Thread dark

Hi Hanna.

as I said, it was the Klango player which was not working, either crashing
and going silent, or running without Sapi.

thanks to Kuvosh's suggestion about setting the windows environment to 2.1
speakers instead of surround, it seems to be working now.

Hmmm, I didn't think the program was this buggy, which is why i assumed
it

was my soundcard.

I'll try the speaker thing.

I must admit though, after quite a number of logue in attempts both with
Klango player and Klango player Dx mode I wasn't getting any joy at all.

your speaker setting is set to 2.1 not on surround sound that will

Hi.

Well I'm finally trying out the Klango player, and it's not
working

well at all.

I didn't think Shaddowdragon meant Hunt the wumpus, sinse there certainly
isn't anything resembling rpg elements in the original Wumpus game.

I do know though, that a lot of If developers use the wumpus as a legendary
monster, which is why I assume the rpg type game had wumpus in the title

Actually there is at least one z-code game I can think of with RPG
mechanics. Called hmm... can't remember exactly, but something with
wumpus in it I think. Anyway its sort of like the old hunt the wumpus
game, only with a lot more levels, a massive set of caverns to explore,
and a lot of levelling to do and items and weapons to earn.
Unfortunately I could never really get into it since the plot is weird
and you start out as some weird news reporter or something, but ah
well. There's a lot more RPG style games for tads, the most notable of
which is magocracy, which I found rather interesting. You play a hedge
wizard, aka a wizard with almost no magical power or at best slight of
hand elusions or hardly useful spells, and you have to go up against 4
powerful wizards, traps, and monsters within the castle and try to earn
the crown. It takes some strategy and careful use of the rpg mechanics.
These can be found on ifarchive, along with a few others. Usually if
they have some sort of rpg mechanics or battle system its mensioned in
the description.

It's not in the documentation because that's supposed to be something of a
surprise. You don't need to use the arrows, just press enter to jump. Then
when you hear the beeping you mentioned you can press Control to unload your
weapon. Just remember to keep jumping when you hear his gun. Rince, lather
and repeat until boss is dead.

No, not hunt the wumpus exactly, but a sort of clone. A bit like hunt in the

[Audyssey] Domain of Heroes

2008-12-07 Thread Shadow Dragon
Well, after a bit of testing with jaws, I've come to the conclusion that,
with jaws at least, this game is about as accessible as Lands of Hope. That
is, it takes a bit of adapting and it can be tough to navigate, but its
dooable. But I have to say its not all its cracked up to be. Battle entails
simply selecting an action and then just sitting there while your character
kills wave after wave of monsters. Not exactly what I'd call entertaining.
The quests do look well thought out, and I'll have to look into the story
more, but so far its not exactly impressive. One thing I still can't figure
out is how, if at all, you can examine items. There doesn't even seem to be
a mouseover thing to bring up a description with stats and such, so
equipment seems to be guesswork, which I really don't like. Anyway, I'll
play around with it a little more and see what I come up with, but it
doesn't really look promising.

AhAh, found it!

it's called Wumpus 2000 apparently.

Actually finding it was rather easy given Hal's find in Vf function.

It can be directly downloaded on

No, not hunt the wumpus exactly, but a sort of clone. A bit like hunt in
the dark, only with a kind of rpg and levelling system, a random dungeon
layout, and a lot more monsters to fight. But like I said, I could never
get into it given the exceedingly odd plot.

Actually there is at least one z-code game I can think of with RPG
mechanics. Called hmm... can't remember exactly, but something with
wumpus in it I think. Anyway its sort of like the old hunt the wumpus
game, only with a lot more levels, a massive set of caverns to
explore, and a lot of levelling to do and items and weapons to earn.
Unfortunately I could never really get into it since the plot is
weird and you start out as some weird news reporter or something, but
ah well. There's a lot more RPG style games for tads, the most
notable of which is magocracy, which I found rather interesting. You
play a hedge wizard, aka a wizard with almost no magical power or at
best slight of hand elusions or hardly useful spells, and you have to
go up against 4 powerful wizards, traps, and monsters within the
castle and try to earn the crown. It takes some strategy and careful
use of the rpg mechanics. These can be found on ifarchive, along with
a few others. Usually if they have some sort of rpg mechanics or
battle system its mensioned in the description.

Action and Z code don't really go together exactly.

The Eamon adventure games are pretty much a mix of rpg complete with
hack and slash xp combat, and basic If puzles, but running them
under windows xp is proving interesting.

As I said Shaddow dragon, all the items and such are on screen hot spots
with no lables, thus unfindable.

i don't know if there are better descriptions in the inventory tab, sinse
again, the tabs seem to be completely unlabled graphical hot spots.

i think it's possible to basically wander around the game and sit around in
a dungeon until you either beat up some monsters or get kicked out, and to
do quests just using the main map view and text boxes, but not having the
inventory tab is a pest, also the pvp actually sounded interesting in
this game, but from the description seemed very graphically nasty.

If you can get the people in charge to do some serious text labeling
(particularly of tabs), please let me know.

Hi everyone,
Over the last few months I have really been getting into interactive
fiction games, and really enjoy the old text adventures. As a result
that has me thinking of some possible game projects after Mysteries of
the Ancients and Raceway are released.
One idea I have been thinking of is producing a handful of USA Games
text adventures for Mac, Windows, and Linux that is similar to classic
if titles. With web based games like Sryth around I have discovered the
classic DND text adventure style game still can be quite addictive given
enough adventures and puzzles in it. What do you all think of this idea?
Cheers!

My thoughts exactly.

the point is it's a text adventure, so it's all about the writing quality.

If however tom's game has rpg like features such as combat, bosses etc, some
sounds or music would be a nice addition, - though by no means
essential.

Re: [Audyssey] Muds

2008-12-07 Thread Valiant8086
Hi.
Alter Aeon.
See http://dentinmud.org
or
telnet://dentinmud.org :3010
It's a midevil style hack and slash game with a farely decent player base. I've
got loads of friends on there. I've been playing since May 2005. It's sort of
similar to dicu based muds, but it's not dicu as it was written from scratch.
One of my favorite things about it that I can't find anywhere else is that the
melee combat system you can't see each fighting round. With smaug and dicu and
such when you fight something you get a two second period of scilence, then you
get a load of hits all at once, then it's scilent for another two seconds.
Alter Aeon is just kind of continuous and seems more realistic in that aspect.

Many people don't like Alter Aeon. They say it's boring, all you do is run run
run, which means you go kill mobs left and right in order to get experience
that you need to level with. I certainly don't feel that way. I often log in
and just chat with my many friends on there. If I did want to get more
interesting than that without killing mobs I could brew potions, or I could
enter a player killer arena and go whoop some insert word of choice here.

Speaking of player killer, which for those who are unaware, it means to go up
against another human controlled character and try to kill that character.
Alter Aeon is a great mud to me because player versis player isn't required on
there. You can never kill another player or be killed by another one
ligidimintly if you want. In order to be killable by another player or to be
able tokill another player you have to enter a command. There's even a
temporary one so that you can just log out and back into the game and you're no
longer a player killer. Also there are player killing arenas mortal that goes
into arenas can kill other players as that's the point. During temporary player
killing and player killing arena, you don't have anything to lose by killing or
being killed. You don't lose experience or anytyhing so you can just have a hay
ride and enjoy yourself testing your abilities against all the quad 32 players
who decide to come have fun with yoou.

Just had a recent experience with the quad 32 thing. They killed me and several
other clan members of mine a whole bunch and we finally managed to kill them,
with all of us teaming them *lol*. That was so funny.

srith. Srith i'm just too laxy to arrow around and see what''s going on after
each turn. Haha that doesn't mean I don't think it's a good game though. I
should try it again, I haven't tried it on an internet connection that wasn't a
dialup connection before. Back then I had to wait like 30 seconds for the page
to reload. now it would probably reload in 5 or so.

Subject: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

  Cheers!

Actually the tabs are accessible with jaws. Hence why I said I couldn't find
any kind of link to bring up item descriptions or the like. They're not
exactly accessible, since they aren't labeled, but you can get to them with
a little trial and error, with jaws at least it's a matter of memorizing 2
or 3 arrow key presses depending on what tab you're trying to access. and
yeah, as for battle, I can't see really anything to do there accept sit and
let wave after wave of monsters come to you. I have trouble believing that's
all there is to it, but that's all I can find as of now. Anyway, it seems to
be another case of no real plot anyway. They claim 3 different storylines,
but all I've really seen so far are the classic kill this and take this here
quests. Perhaps I'll try a little longer, but the games starting to become
rather annoying.

Well, after a bit of testing with jaws, I've come to the conclusion that,
with jaws at least, this game is about as accessible as Lands of Hope.
That is, it takes a bit of adapting and it can be tough to navigate, but
its dooable. But I have to say its not all its cracked up to be. Battle
entails simply selecting an action and then just sitting there while your
character kills wave after wave of monsters. Not exactly what I'd call
entertaining. The quests do look well thought out, and I'll have to look
into the story more, but so far its not exactly impressive. One thing I
still can't figure out is how, if at all, you can examine items. There
doesn't even seem to be a mouseover thing to bring up a description with
stats and such, so equipment seems to be guesswork, which I really don't
like. Anyway, I'll play around with it a little more and see what I come
up with, but it doesn't really look promising.

Actually the tabs are accessible with jaws. Hence why I said I
couldn't find any kind of link to bring up item descriptions or
the like. They're not exactly accessible, since they aren't
labeled, but you can get to them with a little trial and error,
with jaws at least it's a matter of memorizing 2 or 3 arrow key
presses depending on what tab you're trying to access. and yeah,
as for battle, I can't see really anything to do there accept sit
and let wave after wave of monsters come to you. I have trouble
believing that's all there is to it, but that's all I can find as
of now. Anyway, it seems to be another case of no real plot
anyway. They claim 3 different storylines, but all I've really
seen so far are the classic kill this and take this here quests.
Perhaps I'll try a little longer, but the games starting to
become rather annoying.

i don't know if there are better descriptions in the inventory
tab, sinse again, the tabs seem to be completely unlabled
graphical hot spots.

i think it's possible to basically wander around the game and
sit around in a dungeon until you either beat up some monsters
or get kicked out, and to do quests just using the main map view
and text boxes, but not having the inventory tab is a pest,
also the pvp actually sounded interesting in this game, but from
the description seemed very graphically nasty.

If you can get the people in charge to do some serious text

Well, after a bit of testing with jaws, I've come to the
conclusion that, with jaws at least, this game is about as
accessible as Lands of Hope. That is, it takes a bit of
adapting and it can be tough to navigate, but its dooable. But
I have to say its not all its cracked up to be. Battle entails
simply selecting an action and then just sitting there while
your character kills wave after wave of monsters. Not exactly
what I'd call entertaining. The quests do look well thought
out, and I'll have to look into the story more, but so far its
not exactly impressive.

2008-12-07 Thread Shadow Dragon
You definitely won't get any argument from me. Unfortunately it seems like
webmasters are getting lazier and lazier these days. Shame most text rpg's
of this sort couldn't have started as KoL did, where everything was labelled
from the start. Of course on the other hand, there's only so much you can do
with labelling, especially when it comes to animation and meters and the
like. I'm not really sure what you mean about age of fable being the
exception though, it doesn't really have any flashy immages and the like
that I know of, doesn't even have a combat system. Its pretty much like a
choose your own adventure book governed strictly by stat tests.

While I agree that practically you'd have to have a very decent sort of
webmaster to do that, - in fairness if they'd actually been obeying
their net conventions there should have been alt text there anyway.

Sryth has a few images, particularly associated with functions, and you
know Kingdom of loathing is packed with them, but both of those games are
fine simply because people have been doing what they should.

It might just be my boardom with the majority of standard form rpg's
talking, but it does actually seem that for a heck of a lot of games, the
more time spent on flashy images and graphics and an inconvenient user
interface, the worse the writing and story.

though of course there are exceptions like age of fable.

I agree the game could definitely use some labelling. I don't know
thatit'll actually happen though, given the amount of graphical content
and immages. Will probably be another case of lands of hope, where the
ridiculous amount of immages would make going back through and labelling
everything a truly massive and rather unfeesable project. But I suppose
we'll see.

[Audyssey] Question for Jim about Simon

2008-12-07 Thread ari

Hi Jim
I enjoy your Simon, but I would please like to know if you could do these
suggestions if it can be done without too much trouble.
1. Can you make it so that a person can start from the round from where you
failed, or that you can set from which number of objects to remember to
begin? Example, if I fail on round 10, can I start again from round 10?
2. Some people prefer to play memory to see how much they can remember
without a time limit, rather trying to concentrate on remembering as much as
they can without the pressure of time. Could there be an option to turn time
limits on and off?

Thanks
Ari

Another mud that I play on is materia magica. materiamagica.com port 23 or

It is a fantasy world. It is hack and slash but there are other parts as
well. You can quest to gain rewards as well as go on what they call runs.
Runs are adventures in the game that often require a group of players to
cooperate together to get done. I enjoy it. The player base is friendly and
the ims are very receptive to making things easy for a screen reader to
read. My husband is a guide on the game and helps many of the vi players who
play.

Hi.
Alter Aeon.
See http://dentinmud.org
or
telnet://dentinmud.org :3010
It's a midevil style hack and slash game with a farely decent player base.
I've got loads of friends on there. I've been playing since May 2005. It's
sort of similar to dicu based muds, but it's not dicu as it was written
from scratch.
One of my favorite things about it that I can't find anywhere else is that
the melee combat system you can't see each fighting round. With smaug and
dicu and such when you fight something you get a two second period of
scilence, then you get a load of hits all at once, then it's scilent for
another two seconds. Alter Aeon is just kind of continuous and seems more
realistic in that aspect.

Many people don't like Alter Aeon. They say it's boring, all you do is run
run run, which means you go kill mobs left and right in order to get
experience that you need to level with. I certainly don't feel that way. I
often log in and just chat with my many friends on there. If I did want to
get more interesting than that without killing mobs I could brew potions,
or I could enter a player killer arena and go whoop some insert word of
choice here.

Speaking of player killer, which for those who are unaware, it means to
go up against another human controlled character and try to kill that
character. Alter Aeon is a great mud to me because player versis player
isn't required on there. You can never kill another player or be killed by
another one ligidimintly if you want. In order to be killable by another
player or to be able tokill another player you have to enter a command.
There's even a temporary one so that you can just log out and back into
the game and you're no longer a player killer. Also there are player
killing arenas mortal that goes into arenas can kill other players as
that's the point. During temporary player killing and player killing
arena, you don't have anything to lose by killing or being killed. You
don't lose experience or anytyhing so you can just have a hay ride and
enjoy yourself testing your abilities against all the quad 32 players who
decide to come have fun with yoou.

Just had a recent experience with the quad 32 thing. They killed me and
several other clan members of mine a whole bunch and we finally managed to
kill them, with all of us teaming them *lol*. That was so funny.

I love the idea of a stand along rpg. Writing is essential in making that
interesting for me. But I know that you are creative and will have a great
story Tom. I think that having sounds and music would be nice but it isn't
necessary for a good game. It is more for atmosphere and such. On the muds I
play I have a lot of osunds set. Not just for indications of things
happening but often for environment too. But I would be very excited aobut
any rpg. There aren't really any of those in the accessible game community
and I wish there was. Those are my favorite type of game and there are very
few of those around.

My thoughts exactly.

the point is it's a text adventure, so it's all about the writing quality.

If however tom's game has rpg like features such as combat, bosses etc,
some sounds or music would be a nice addition, - though by no means
essential.

I managed to kill the vine, that to was easy.
But now there are 3 objects in the room, and I wander if I should get em or not.
so I then go to the last corridoor.
there waits the black cloth man.
I shoot, he moves, I retreat.
I shoot, he shoots, he moves, I retreat.
He shoots, I shoot, I run out of amo I retreat, switch weapons and heal up.
He shoots, I shoot, but this time I can't get away fast enough.
How many shots does this guy take?
This guy is the only guy I can not beat.

Another mud that I play on is materia magica. materiamagica.com port 23 or
port 4000. either will work. I have been playing 2 years now and enjoy much.

Subject: [Audyssey] Pipe 2, level 16

Hi all,
I have reached Level 16 in Pipe 2 a few times, and realise I press Enter
to jump. However, I don't understand what I need to do when I hear the
gun either from my left, centre or right. Am I meant to use my arrow keys
to point to where the gun is coming from? Also, what does the beeping
mean? I can't find anything relating to any of this in the documentation.

Thanks in advance for any tips.

[Audyssey] Tom's game, for everyone?

2008-12-07 Thread dark
It just occurred to me, that Tom's text rpg would actually appeal to lots of
people outside the accessible games community as well, such as all those fans
of Gamebooks, Sryth, text adventures etc.

For the purposes of accessible games awareness etc, I think it'd be great to
have a text rpg with great writing and nice mechanics sitting on a site beside
the likes of Mota.

there are even various places I can think of which might host or be happy to
have information about the game, everywhere from the Chronicles of Arborell
forum to the Pc index of the If archive.

Of course, this would mean also making the game playable by mouse, and having
options such as a different text colour for clickable choices, but that
shouldn't be too much of a problem I think.

Appologies to be the barer of bad news liam, but there's someone else on

I've told her that because of your job this isn't a great time and to be
patient, but I thought in fairness I should mention it here as well.

I hope you don't get too discouraged about this.

Perhaps if your having E-mail issues with checking the Lworks mail there's
something that could be done to help, for instance a topic for key
requests in the visitors room of the audiogames.net forum (people can post
there without registering), assuming that would be more easily
checkable than your E-mail.

While obviously with your job things are going to slow down slight, i'd
really hate to see Lworks close completely over this, both because of the
great work you've done in the past, and because while the site and such is
stil open there's always the possibility you could do more game
developements in future, even if at a much slower pace.

Hi,
Well to do something like Eaman I'd have to add a parcer to the game and
then it would be like building my own inform, tads, etc scripting
language which is a major pain. About the best thing I could do is
release the game under some type of open source license like creative
commons that would allow C/C++ developers to add to the games over all
story if they desired. Either that or people could submit there
quests/adventures to me and I'd include them into the game as I get
time. in fact, I fully hope to be able to do that to expand the
adventures in the future.

Hi Dark,
Well, I have a complete copy of the 2nd eddition of the rules. I agree

Also, I'm personally becoming slightly disenchanted with the kill

If you gain combat xp purely from the physical act of sswinging your

just getting random amounts of xp for clobbering things as in DD

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Claudio,
Oh, I see. Well, can't help you there. The genre of roll playing games
are all about story driven fantacy and not about constant action like in
Mysteries of the Ancients.
I don't know if you have ever read the choose your own adventure books,
but I use to love those as a kid. No matter how many times you read the
book as long as you made different choices while reading you would end
up in a totally different adventure. The endings would sometimes turn
out different which was cool. Interactive fiction is a lot like that,
and rpg is more so since it is unlimited in adventures and there is no
end to the quests. Your character is constantly expanding and obtaining
new skills, powers, weapons, etc.

Claudio wrote:

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

I didn't literally mean Eamon in terms of parza, actually I'm not
convinced of parzing commands in an rpg.

I only meant in the sense of a single centralized location like Eamon's main
hall, from which a number of adventures could be accessed, and onto which
more adventures could be added which could then all be undertaken with the
same character.

I'd love the writing adventuresw option, sinse it's something I've very much
always fancied doing, but do not have the skills required.

I have considdered writing a gamebook, and even have a plot, story, setting
and several scenarios in mind, however I've yet to find a coherent way of
creating a section plan, - even if writing in plane text, to show which
section links to which and keep track of which bits of the book need
writing.

A tree diagram would be ideal, but as two years of formal logic showed me,
representing tree diagrams in textual form is a right pest! especially with
a long tree.

This could of course just be me and my abysmal spacial/tabular logic
understanding.

Anyway, the point is adventure creation would rock if possible and the Eamon
model would be the best for that.

On an unrelated side note, sinse 4th ed is out, there's actually a distinct

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
At this point I am not thinking of this being a commercial venture. More
just a fun little side project we can all join in and put together. I
can do the coding and the community can help submit ideas, stories,
suggestions, and experiences. Who knows I might even release it as open
source, but no promises about that last.
As far as an engine goes I will be writing it from scratch in C or C++.
One of the reasons I have considered using a text based RPG engine in
the first place is so that I have a game thatI can port to any device
where I might like to play the game. I know the request for mobile phone
games is in high demand and from my research text based games is about
the easiest thing to port to Pacmates and phones running Windows Mobile.
I am a big open source user myself using Linux a lot, and again text
based games are the easiest to port to that platform. So I have high
hopes that perhaps this text based RPG could be a research project into
targeting multiple operating systems and devices if nothing else.

The idea has merrit. However, do you plan to release them commertially?

Out of curiosity, what would you use as a gaming engine for these
adventures?

[Audyssey] Domain of Heroes now semi-Accessible.

2008-12-07 Thread Orin

Hi all,

The domain of heroes admin responded to me today. In adition, he
labled the tabs. I'm now level 7.

I've done quite a few quests and each faction does indeed have their
own story. My first character got the Legion automatticly which is an
evil faction, but on my second character I may choose the
brootherhood. Also I think I've taken an area over from another
faction and gained 1 VXP for it.

Might try it in school tomorrow and see if it lives up to it's name
an MMO for working people.

For those of you who use twitter, when you play you can have DoH post
notifications of quests you complete, rare objects you've found, etc.

Also, to give feedback, Arron said we can contact him at:

Just wanted to let people who were interested know, weather you like
the plot or battle system.

Hi,
Not exactly. I am thinking of something strictly roll playing based where
you create a game charactr that is a dwarf, elf, human, gnome, etc and
work your way throughout a constantly expanding game world. Now and then I
would update the game with new adventures and quests to embark upon which
would make this a constantly growing and expanding game. In one adventure
you might have to slay a vampire that is attacking the citizens of a town
you happened upon in your travels. In another you might have to rescue a
princess from a band of goblin raiders. I'm just shooting ideas from the
hip here, but I want to create something that is like table top Dungions
and Dragons that you can play on your PC, cell phone, Pacmate, etc.

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts about new text adventures.

2008-12-07 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Yes. The thing to keep in mind is that if I were to add sounds and music
I would not be able to release this as a free project. I was sincerely
hoping to make this a free venture, and if I have to pay for
sounds/music then I have to charge for those additions to the game which
isn't what I had planned for.
Also one of the goals I really want to try with this game is begin
opening USA Games up to multiple platforms. I did a lot of research this
passed year, and I discovered the only realistic way to do that is to
use simple user interfaces like text and as little proprietary operating
system specifics as possible. Making cross platform games is difficult
unless you want to use something like SDL ESpeak, and other open source
technologies instead of Sapi, DirectX, etc. So I'll start with something
simple and work from there.

dark wrote:

My thoughts exactly.

the point is it's a text adventure, so it's all about the writing
quality.

If however tom's game has rpg like features such as combat, bosses
etc, some sounds or music would be a nice addition, - though by no
means essential.
