[Gimp-user] Printing problems
Gimp 2.6.5, Vista software, HP printer. Selecting print in Gimp file area selects my HP printer window, but print results don't match my selection in HP printer window. Gimp doesn't talk to printer. Printer is ok in other software pgms. No special print window as shone in online help. -- John R. [Gimp-user] Gimp crashes
With an opened photo, the filters section runs ok. However, tools and colors crashes Gimp with a Windows message that the program has stopped working. Downloaded/installed Gimp 2 times with same problem. I finally uninstalled version 2.6.6, and installed version 2.4.6, and had no problems,so far, with this version! -- John R. A soft proof can easily[1] be obtained by using imagemagick[2]. Short answer: I doubt you need CMYK. You certainly won't be prevented from printing your photos by not using it. Many desktop printers expect RGB input these days[3]. Chris I would expect that flesh tones would give the most trouble in converting from RGB to CMYK . Among free software programs Krita, TeX, Cinepaint and Scribus handle CMYK natively, and all but TeX can use ICC color profiles. Gimp and Inkscape don't yet, and that limits their acceptablity in the publishing world despite their other excellent features. Book designers want CMYK plus ICC profiles and won't consider a product that lacks that capability for color work. The free programs listed above that most closely approximate Gimp are Cinepaint (a Gimp offshoot0, and Krita. But neither has the range of other features offered by Gimp. and Krita only runs under the KDE desktop found on many Linux systems. It is possible to conceive of a workflow that involved doing most of the creative work in Gimp but a final checkout/conversion to CMYK in e.g., Krita or Scribus. Color separations where needed for the press can be prepared by specialized prepress software and need not involve the publisher. Most printers will accept color files in pdf form so long as the color is in CMYK model. It helps if the PDF adheres to the X3 specification however. Well what it basically is, is a CD cover and booklet. The cover and booklet conform to an image template so that they print the correct size and with correct margins at a given DPI. I suggest that the cover art is a good Gimp application but the booklets aren't. An application such as TeX (e.g, Context) could prepare those pages. If art work or backgrounds etc. were needed they could be prepared via Gimp or a drawing program and incorporated as needed on the pages. But gimp would not be used to create the final image to go to the printer. That way you would have the flexibiilty to substitute text in a batch editor program like sed and have the pages adjust automatically. Margins are easily controlled in a layout program and dpi is not really a factor with text. I am afraid that you may have painted yourself into a corner by using gimp as a page layout program. That is not its strength. [Gimp-user] Xsane entry on acquire menu.
I just moved to a Slack 12 partition with different names for hardware. I copied over my identity, home directory etc. from the old Slack 11 partition. I have two entries for Xsane under Acquire. One is the Xsane dialog. That one works. The other refers to a now obsolete hardware address. That one doesn't work. How do I delete the non-working entry? 1. Ability to work with and save files using CMYK color model. 1a. Use ICC profiles for viewing and exporting CMYK model files. 2. Clean up the code for exporting PostScript and Encapsulated PostScript files. I have on occasion dug into the source code and changed things like the unnecessary default offsets but I am not prepared to do this for each new release I get. Motivation: some of us use Open Source software exclusively. The nearest OS rival to Photoshop is Gimp in terms of functionality. Publishers need to work in CMYK and sometimes in spot color. There have been little steps toward the CMYK color model but not a complete adoption. Other programs, some not nearly as well developed as Gimp, manage to handle the choice between CMYK and RGB without difficulty. When you open up Krita for example that is the first decision you make. But Krita is embryonic and not ready for me at least to use. Scribus also handles both color models, as does TeX. The reason why people want to have Gimp tools transferred to Krita is that Krita can work in cmyk, and Gimp's progress in this regard seems to be asymptotic, closer and closer but it never seems to get there. Krita is however dead slow. I use nothing but Open Source, and Gimp is one of my favorites. [Gimp-user] Logo uses RoostHeavy Font.
I have a recent download of Gimp 2.3.13 on a Slackware Linux system using fc-cache for fonts. However Gimp may use something else. The 3d outline Script Fu appears to want the RoostHeavy font by default. AFAIK I don't have this font on my system. When I use the font selector on the 3D screen it shows RoostHeavy as the default but the results do not resemble the RoostHeavy font I see on the internet. And when I use that same font selector to search available fonts RoostHeavy is not one of the choices. So I have to assume that the script fu substitutes another font silently. Can anyone suggest what the substituted font might be? I have downloaded a TTF version of Roost Heavy. Where should I put it so that Gimp can find it? ON another list someone was complaining about the expense nad bother of upgrading to the latest Photoshop, including licenses etc. I suggested Gimp as a no cost/no fuss alternative for students. I received a long reply, much of which I am not technically competent to answer. I have never used Photoshop. Anyone else care to take a crack at one or more issues raised? - I've checked out GIMP before. I was going to try to run it again to see if this comment held any water: There may be a feature or two that are unique to Photoshop but I'll bet you can live without them. …but X11 choked on my 34 activated fonts. From what I recall of version 2.1.x, it (and I) suffered from its aggravating GUI and inconsistent tools, and a general lack of features. That being said, if friends and family members are pining for some way to scan and modify old photos, I install GIMP for them and show them how to do it. GIMP works for casual use. I don't see it fitting into a professional workflow mainly because of the utter awkwardness of the GUI. Maybe if you're used to the Gnome UI standards or have the mindset of a programmer, it's less awkward. But that's another story. These are first year students I'm talking about here. They can barely get the OSX dock straight, let alone browsing for files in the GIMPs browser, which reveals the BSD underbelly of OSX, hidden folders and all. Update: I gave X11 some time (10 minutes on my hermetically maintained dual 1.25 G4 with 2 gigs of ram) and it finally loaded GIMP and also GIMPshop. While it seems that the feature sets have expanded quite a bit, there are still things that I use regularly in Photoshop missing. Here's a list. Adjustment layers: non-destructive editing. It can save you whole minutes if not dozens of them. CMYK Support: Come on! Wacom support- I'm sure you can get it working in linux, but we're not switching. Semi-automated extraction- a real time saver. Live filter previews- what's the point without them? Color profiles (again, come on- how is importing an image into Scribus just to apply a color profile a productive workflow?) Limited output options (a.k.a. mostly useless file types) Vanishing Point (it's actually useful) No typeface previews I could go on and on but I feel that I'm wasting breath, so to speak. Yeah, you can do a lot in the GIMP but it's just not enough. Beyond its limitations, it's difficult to use, doesn't play well with others, and would probably curl up in a ball and die if it tried to interact with our scanners on the intel machines. Photoshop saves time which saves money in the long run, and thus the software pays for itself. I'm not trying to say that GIMP isn't a great solution for Do-It-Yourselfers or Very-Small-Businesses, but if you're teaching students, there's a certain responsibility to focus on industry demands. I had a hard enough time getting them (the faculty) to give up Extensis Suitcase for Font Explorer X. -Matt (My first response follows) Interesting response. Let me answer those objections that I can. 1. Load time: On a modest Linux system and using the stable verson 2.2.13 load time 10 seconds. Modest means a 768MHZ CPU and 512 MB ram. 2. Activated fonts. I estimate about 50 X11 fonts on my system. I got tired counting them onscreen. 3. Scanner: I use an Intel machine and activating the scanner means copying the xsane program to the Gimp plugins directory. Then on next reboot it shows up automatically on the Acquire menu. I scan all the time. 4. GUI: I use KDE. Gimp adapts nicely to that. KDE resembles MSWin. I set my teeniebopper granchild down on my computer and she was able to use Mozilla which she had never seen before and Kword which she had never seen before and the KDE interface itself which she had never seen before without any instruction after I showed her where to access the programs on the menu. The dreadfulness of GUI shock is IMO much overrated. I can go back and forth between KDE, Win 2000 and Win 98 without difficulty, though of course I prefer KDE. 5. CMYK support. In fact what you see on any screen is RGB. The latest unstable Gimp will convert an image by reducing its gamut to one resembling CMYK. You can even get cmyk separations. But for print work it is probably smart to do final checking in Scribus which does the whole CMYK bit, ICC profiles for monitor and printing etc. Now I would much prefer a Gimp that worked natively in CMYK. [Gimp-user] New error with 2.3.11 and 2.3.10
With both of these versions the program compiles clean and installs clean but the following error occurs at runtime: /usr/local/bin/gimp-2.3: symbol lookup error: /usr/local/bin/gimp-2.3: undefined symbol: gimp_env_init I use Slackware Linux 10.2. the only recent change has been the addition of freerock gnome, since Slackware Linux distros no longer include Gnome. I have a version of 2.2.12 that works so I am not fussing with it :) But I have had 2.3.x working before and I would like to continue with it. [Gimp-user] Slackware adventures (contd.)
I have a new Linux Slackware 11 partition that does not have a Gnome add-on. In that partition I successfully ran ./configure, make and make install against a fresh download of gimp 2.3.12. To get it to run I had to import the /usr/local/libgimpconfig* files and links from the old Slackware 10.2 partition. The error I mentioned before did not recur on this partition. However I cannot start gimp from a console window as before. I have to use an icon or the run command. But you can save a gimp image as PostScript (don't forget to zero out the offsets in the print dialog) and then route that PostScript page to your printer somehow. Alternatively you can incorporate the image in a document type you know you can print and then print that document. If a display function can be added to Gimp whereby a double conversion is done, from RGB to CMYK and back again, then the user could view the illo in Gimp with the gamut limited to what it will be in CMYK model, and adjust saturation etc. to bring the photo back up to requirements. Since there is already a function to separate into CMYK colors it could possibly be a recombination of those separations into a single image. In the meantime people like the OP who want to use Gimp instead of Photoshop in their workflow will need to understand its limitations for photos destined for print jobs and develop workarounds. The problem is the limited gamut of CMYK. What looks great in RGB looks dull in CMYK. For serious color work you need a monitor that can be adjusted for color temperature and software that will accept icc profiles and so on. Then you need to run tests, perhaps with a calibrated color target. Photoshop has a lot of this stuff built in. Scribus, which lacks the plugins etc. of Gimp, nevertheless will deal with the CMYK model and ICC profiles. Of course ImageMagick and GraphicsMagick can do conversions back and forth. At this point however it is mostly cut and try with Gimp. You have to do a lot of tests on your setup to get it right. I bought a used sony pro monitor on EBay, model CPD G250 and I have adjusted the color temperature to my flourescent environment. But I haven't gone much further with it, I've been using the Gimp in a limited capacity for the past 4 years and I love it. I like to promote it as much as possible. I have the writer's permission to forward this info: -- One other note of caution about Gimp: I would not try to install it if you're running Win XP. The online info indicates that it will run on Win XP, but it also may screw up other programs. I downloaded it and then discovered that you had to install the GTK+ Runtime Environment. Did that, tried it and, after quickly determining that it was an awkward program and not one that I would choose to use for anything, discovered that GTK had messed up other programs. Took me a couple of hours to get everything back to normal (had to manually find the bits and pieces of GTK and reinstall a couple of other programs). Maybe it works OK with Linux, for which it was designed, but I would not recommend installing it on Win XP. [Gimp-user] Adjusting grayscale illustrations for LSI printing.
the digital printing house LSI has some problems with rendering grayscale illustrations correctly. The instructions given below were prepared for Photoshop users. Perhaps some kind soul can trurn them into equivalent instructions for Gimp. Then I can pass them on to the publishing community. --- 1) In PhotoShop (I'm using 6.0), load the grayscale picture or photo you want to print with LSI. Save it as a TIFF and adjust the image to the size and resolution you will be using in the final document (usually 300 dpi, but could be 600 dpi). 2) Select the Color Sampler tool. This will give you 4 possible eyedropper selections which, as you make them, will be listed under the Info palette. 3) (To do the following, you may want to magnify the areas you are concentrating on.) On your photo, find the lightest point, or any area you want to print as all white. Click on this with the eyedropper. Next, find the darkest point in your photo, or any area you want to print as all black. Click on this with the eyedropper. Do the same thing with the lightest area you want to print (be visible) as gray, and the darkest area you want to NOT print as all black (in other words, to have some shadow detail). Under Info palette, you should now have percentages listed for all four points. 4) Now go to Image:Adjust and select Auto Levels. See how this affects the % settings in your Info palette. You will see each original setting with the new setting to the right of it. Usually your low %'s will go down and your high %'s will go up. 5) Looking at the new settings: If your #1 point (white point) is now below 5%, then your white areas should print as white. If your #2 point (black point) is above 93%, your black areas should print as black. If your #3 point (lightest gray area) is around 10-15%, it should print as light gray. Your #4 point is not always necessary, but anything under 90% should print dark but also show some shadow detail. If the new percentages fall within these boundaries, you should be okay. If not-if either the white points or the black points are too low or too high-you can make further adjustments as follows: 6) Go to Layer:New Adjustment Layer:Curves. You'll see a box with a grid labeled Channel: Gray. The lower left corner should be your maximum white point, and the upper right corner your maximum black point (visible on the gradient strip to the left of and below the box-if it's the opposite, you can reverse it by clicking once on the gradient strip). 7) A line runs diagonally from lower left to upper right of the box, with a small square at each end of the line. To adjust your white point, put the pointer over the lower left square and hold down the left mouse button. If you move the square along the bottom line to the right, you will see the %'s in the Info palette decrease. If you move the square up the left side of the box, you will see the %'s increase. Which direction you move depends on what changes you want to make in the %'s. Just be aware that all 4 percentages will be affected to some degree at some point. It's best to keep all your adjustments here to the barest minimum that will give you the results you want for all 4 points. 8) To adjust the black point, make the same sort of adjustment to the square at the upper right corner of the box. Again, be sure to watch how the %'s for all 4 points are affected. 9) Once you have all 4 points in the Info palette registering within the limitations you want, just save the photo. (I suggest saving it now anyway before going on to any of the next adjustments.) 10) If the above adjustments in Curves don't give you results close enough to what you want, you can play with tweaking the diagonal line that runs across the box. You can grab it (with your left mouse button) anywhere along its length and bend it up or down. You can also slide up and down it as you bend it. Watch what happens to the percentages. You can even bend it up in one section and down in another. You can put as many points along the line as you want. In fact, if you're feeling adventurous, I suggest playing with this for a while to get the feel of it, even if you're not going to use it right now. If you screw up, you can undo any of your adjustments by grabbing any point you've added to the line and sliding it along the line until it's off the edge of the box. 11) One important caveat: Don't pay attention to what your photo looks like on your screen; it may or may not look the way it will when printed by LSI. When I start Gimp 2.3.7 it starts with a paintbrush. I would rather it started with the rectangular select tool. Somewhere in .gimp-2.3 is a value that sets this option I suspect. But I haven't found it yet. Thanks :) Dan Gimp works in the RGB color model and printers use the CMYK color model. CMYK cannot recreate all the shades available with RGB. The programmers of Gimp are working on the problem but they aren't there yet. Some tools that work in the CMYK model are Scribus and the crash-prone Krita. For your brochure task I would try Scribus. Don't expect the range of filters etc. found in Gimp but for creation of a brochure, and seeing which colors work I would go for it. [Gimp-user] Smoothing screen shots.
Those writing software manuals have frequent need to incorporate screen shots. Trouble is, screen shots at 72 or 75 dpi are likely to create moire patterns when reproduced by some POD printers such as LSI. So a tool is needed to blend the dots while retaining legibility. What is the consensus technique for attacking this problem? That is possible. You can already do that in GIMP 2.2, but I admit that using the Softproof filter in 2.2 is somewhat tedious. This will be improved in 2.4. It allows you to work in RGB but the screen (if properly calibrated using a monitor profile) will show you what the print will look like, taking the printer color profile into account. And that is indeed the workflow everyone is converting to nowadays. It really doesn't make much sense to work in CMYK except for special tasks like using spot colors. In 2.3.7 I don't see a softproof filter. My adventures with Parser.pl have already been described. Anyhow bottom line I now have a working copy of 2.3.6 on site. The Gimp on Slack-current is now up to 2.2.10 which is nice. Which one I actually use depends on how far off the latest documentation is from the 2.3.x series. All these and Perl are either included in a standard full installation of e.g., Slackware or Debian Sarge, As I stated earler previous editions of Gimp have compiled without difficulty. I have Slackware Current up to date as of yesterday. I have Debian Sarge up to date as of yesterday. I can compile older versions of Gimp. My concern is not so much with 2.3.x but with 2.4. Carol, in answer to your question although there is a third party program around that will update Slack on the fly, like apt on Debian or Gentoo, I haven't used it. I prefer to go through the drama of a major upgrade once or twice a year. But I do try to keep Gimp up to date. With the advent of more DTP capability--- CMYK, ICC Profiles and such---staying current is more critical. BTW there is a good guide to using Gimp in DTP workflow buried in the online documentation of Scribus, a program that works well with Gimp. Well I did manage to get past the error by editing the file /etc/ld.so.config and commenting out /usr/local/lib. Now I can get some versions to work, such as 2.2.9 and 2.3.3. And I fired up the automatic update program for Slackware (not part of the Slack distro btw, and still somewhat controversial.) It is called swaret. I cannot compile the unstable Gimp because of one stupid thing. the ./configure always blows up on this message: checking for perl... /usr/local/bin/perl checking for XML::Parser... configure: error: XML::Parser perl module is required for intltool -- Now I have a standard Slackware distro including Perl. I have files called Parser.pm all over the place. Where do I get the specific Parser.pm that Gimp needs and where do I put it where Gimp can find it? I had to move one file around but then 2.3.3 would compile. It still won't compile on my main partition. But bottom line I now have 2.3.3.Newer versions won't compile in either partition. My principal concern is, what happens when 2.4 comes out? Will it require an upgrade to my glib? From the depths of my ignorance: Is the color model for png: 1. RGB 2. CMYK 3. Neither 4.
