[videoblogging] Re: My EE Video Blog
Wow. I don't have a clue about what you are talking about but I'm glad you are doing these posts. Because those with a clue about electrical engineering are going to find you. Which is why at some point you are going to want to have a video hosting site. Yeah, go Blip.tv, definitely. Or consider YT for the low rez version and the Blip.tv for the better quality video. You could track the stats and see if folks are viewing the low rez version. I suspect some viewers will if they will if there are in countries that have Internet Cafes or slow Internet access. I recently met a lady from Bolivia who wanted to start videoblogging. She has to use an Internet Cafes to upload and they don't necessarily have broadband. Some are on ISDN or Dial-up that is spotty. I'm new to video blogging so I'm after constructive comments on the quality of my blog, the tools and techniques I use etc. Blog #22 is the one to watch, it's where I talk about my blogging experience so far. I use Wordpress on my own website, with the iTunes plugin and use Feedburner to generate the iTunes version. I host the low res 320x240 (500Kb/s) MP4 on my website (about 45MB each episode), but I figure this is not a practical long term solution if I get more popular. The high res version (640x480 2000Kb/s) I upload to my Youtube channel, and I embed the Youtube link into my Wordpress logs. About 150MB each. Blogs I limit to 10min each to meet the Youtube limitation. Occasionally I'll do a 2 part episode. I've set up an account on Blip.tv and am thinking of using that for all my actual hosting, as well as continue to upload to Youtube because, well, you have to have a presence there. Comments on using Blip.tv anyone? Camera is an old 2nd hand NTSC DV Canon Camcorder with external shotgun mic. Adequate video I think, but not helped by my dark workshop lit with two strip fluoro's. Camera angle and height just happens to be my tripods minimum height on the bench in front of me. Seems to work well enough. Editing is done with Ulead VideoStudio 12, but I put minimum effort into this. In fact the whole blog is minimum effort. No script (off-the-cuff as I promote), and I don't go back and film things to correct issues, so just pretty much push a short blog out the door every week. Any feedback appreciated! Thanks Dave.
[videoblogging] Re: which videoblogs do you recommend?
There's the rub, I've been watching a lot of video online when I am researching a topic for a post. That is how I found a whole community of dance blogs and dance vlogs. Using Blip.tv and YouTube to find non-media content when I'm trying to find if possible user generated video on topics. http://danceaday.com is an archive of one of them. The tech problems have been reduced. The new challenges are distribution and awareness of user generated video. Also busting out of the echo chambers of our various online communities. Just viewed your questions, sorry for the delay. I would not edit directly to or from an SD card. What I do is make a DVD copy of the original videos or store them on my external drive. Another for the Kodak Zi6 - got mine on sale at Target. The Mino, Ultra Mino and others were comparatively priced. I'd say go for it if you have completely read the contest rules and guidelines. That if you win $2,000 you can expect to pay taxes on it and receive a IRS 1099 statement. That is standard on almost all contests people enter and win. So that is not a big deal. You agree to participate in promotions for x amount of time, you agree to allow them to edit your video as they see fit and to allow sharing your video with AOL, Hulu and other services without any additional compensation. Monetarily that is. I'm big on encouraging people reading the terms of service as well. Here is why you should do it: It is a project that has a finite start and stop point. You have to produce a video. You have to teach something. You'll have to solve multiple challenges to make it work. If you can do 3 our of 4 you got the right stuff. [videoblogging] Re: Windows Movie Maker---New Version
When I first started doing web videos I was using WWM2. It was fine if I kept it to straight cuts and titles. If I wanted to cross fade or do anything else that SOB crashed like a frat house after a party. There are probably some of my prior rants about it still in the archives. I tried to get along with that sucker. I really did. But there came a point in frustration where I could stand it no longer. In hindsight, maybe it was too hard to design a movie making program that operated on Pentium or Celeron class machines. Yet Microsoft wasn't about to let one of the selling points of the Mac go unchallenged. The first effort on Windows ME royally sucked. Windows Movie Maker2 did make it easy to create basic videos. But if you had to really edit or get video from different parts of your video, Kaboom, down it went. I'm on Vista with a Dual-Core 32bit system now. I have used Windows Movie Maker for quickies, making titles or really short projects. It hasn't crashed or locked up yet. I have other software that I use as my main editing programs (Corel Video Studio X12 and Serif Movie Plus X3). I do hope they can make this work. But I ain't fooling with it until it is confirmed and certified that the bugs, cooties and ickys have been cleansed from the code. As movie makers ourselves, we're in the same boat as you are. We want those fun shatter transitions and warp effects just as much as you do! We're definitely working on improving this and plan to have a range of rich-editing capabilities in the first official version. - - You'd like something resembling a timeline in the product. In the Movie Maker beta, the storyboard didn't have the ability to represent time like a traditional timeline would. We've heard you say that you'd like to be able to drag and drop clips to get them to start and end where you want, and that you'd like to have music and text that span multiple photos or video clips. We've also heard that you'd like to at a glance see which clips are longer than others, which clips have effects applied, and which clips have transitions. Now, I don't want to give too much away just yet (we still have work to do!), but we're definitely aware of these limitations. We've developed a new approach that we think will help address some of the shortcomings of the beta and will scale well from novice to experienced users without requiring people to switch views in order to get things done. I love that, You'd like something resembling a timeline in the product. I dont mean to rip on Microsoft, but it's a little insane that it;s a big revelation that a video editing program needs a good timeline as a workspace. Anyway...glad they are updating. Darren from Problogger.net very good. Some A-Hole trying to sell crap to newbies bad, very bad. I know or work with three of the women who will be speaking. Hard to have intimate conversations with people pushing and shoving their way to a session. Who will be speaking on behalf of our portion of web video? The networks and other corporate video entities have planted flags of occupation. Video hosting services are starting to diminish or phase out user generated content. I respectfully disagree because I lived the analog to digital conversion life. It cost more in time, conversions and stuff you have buy. I had a analog tape camera that in order to use footage I had to buy an analog to digital convert (Pyro A/V Link) hook it up, find software to convert (my editing software at the time didn't like Pyro) and then bring it into my software to edit and transcode again. Time sink. Huge. The school will have to live with this equipment for a long time. Tapes stocks are disappearing. I'm telling you it is far easier to make a DVD safety copy of raw footage and then do whatever. I think an upper level SD memory card or hard drive camcorder is the way to go. I'd lean toward the Panansonic, Canon lines with good optics and optical zoom. The new JVC camcorders released also should be checked out. You know I think there are U.S. laws about using online networks to promote hate speech. The problem is defining hate speech. I have seen on both sides of the political spectrum in YT that the comments get beyond vicious in their responses to each other. Just take a look at what some of the comments are saying about Susan Boyle? There is no dialog, there is Springer-speak, it is insecure young men jocking for attention. There is also the push out of original content for the equivalent of online DVR. That is why Hulu is kicking butt. There will be a solution to this problem. Economics are going to force it to come to pass. Having this happen is too risky for Google to allow the possibility to continue. If they are smart they will act now. Because the next time it will be a young white women full of life that someone will stalk and kill. And FOX, Nancy Grace and every tabloid will run to the bank with it. YouTube will have to move to a model of corporate/PR/creative advertising and safe source videos. Citizens, unless it is truly a breaking news story, will be pushed out. [videoblogging] Re: Black Woman YouTube Vlogger Murdered by Stalker
I dunno. Like I said I do passionately believe in freedom of speech. It acts as a vent for those that feel like they can't be heard any other way. Even the A-holes, trolls and certain orally fixated people have a means of expression. You might be right about YTs not knowing about comment moderation. I know I use it, I have to. I do think when the young man tried to contact the police there had to be some immediate way for them to contact Google to see the contents of the videos. There should have been an emergency mechanism in place that allowed somebody to see the video and say this is trouble. I type that but it doesn't make me feel comfortable to have that decision in subjective hands. The only reason I can think of is that they don't know they can. And I just don't understand why the most popular video sharing site, potentially a place with great positive impact and opportunity, should allow itself to be turned into a big pile of shit. Is it any wonder Google can't make any money from YouTube advertising? Who wants to advertise their product next to all that? Google should get with the program and crack down. They could start by removing people's anonymity. Google should insist on identifying people by email accounts linked to Google accounts. And/or have comments set to moderation/approval by default. I don't believe this is a freedom of speech issue. To say that Freedom of speech equals being able to say whatever you want on YouTube is nonsense. Stopping abusive and offensive comments isn't against freedom of speech. Shutting down abusive commenters on your site isn't repressing freedom of speech any more than forcibly ejecting someone who comes into your garden and starts shouting at you and threatening you. If someone wants to stand in their own garden and shout and threaten, fair enough. That's freedom of speech. Within the bounds of laws on incitement to violence. One reason to do it is because a huge part of YouTube's audience are kids. Another reason is that it helped a psychotic continually abuse one of their users and get so wound up by doing it that he finds her and kills her. He may have ended up doing it to someone else offline - that's another issue. But there should be a team of people at YouTube saying In our house, this is not acceptable behaviour. instead of tacitly giving it Google's blessing and a podium. How hard is it to understand the concept of communicating with customers and clients? Part of the reason businesses are tanking is that whether brick and mortar or online merchants fail to inform about planned outages or changes in services. This is astounding that so many companies just don't get this simple fact. Businesses have relationships with people they call customers and clients. Communication is part of that relationship. Exchanging pay for services is another part. If you stop communicating with me and make it harder for me to know what is going on I will walk away. I don't care if he got a Pro account or is trying to save some moolah, he has the right to present his message. And for the record, I am a straight-up Moonbat liberal leaning person who may have minor threads of libertarianism when it comes to giving money to for-profit corporations that f*cked themselves. 2. Blip.tv is a business. If the campaign paid for pro level usage I would not expect them to leave cash money on the table. Not in these times when other video web hosting distribution companies are going dark. 3. There is passion. There is intolerance. It is getting hard to tell them apart. I understand what is being invoked by this extraordinary time in American history. Lies that are being presented as truth. Racism as a badge of honor. Sexism up the ying-yang and you can now pick multiple flavors of identity politics. One of the current gifts of vlogging now is to tell your truth and show your proof of how you can to your thoughts. Let me know when you posted that video, I'll watch. In this community you have to respect that not everyone is going to share your feelings. That is ok. Understand the context of the feedback. I know for me it is a number of factors: Exhaustion from juggling life, school and videoblogging. I hated to put that on the back burner but there are times when you have to call a time out. I'm also writing for BlogHer, the Library Tech blog and my own blog which has unintentionally turned into the YT Music channel with commentary on the weeks events. That will change now that I have a bit more rest and can work out the bugs of my next project. I didn't want to repeat going to places I've been before and recording the same things in a different year. That might change now that the summer events are busting out all over Los Angeles. I was video blocked. I don't want to produce crappy video but I'm still learning how to make thing look good, better, er acceptable. This is counter to my just do it philosophy. I got trapped when I sat down to edit and I couldn't up it to the next level. Should I even bother? Most times I didn't. Truth is some of you put out fabulous videos and most times I just have time to point, shoot, upload. I have ideas that are often inspired by the group and bloggers in general. I'm working on a new group of service videos for some of the issues that have come up concerning Fair Use, Copyright and stuff like that. It is an experiment. I don't know if I can do without it looking like a PowerPoint presentation. Which comes back to content. I would love if we could have more discussions about what the community wants and needs in terms of content, content creation help and how do you get your idea or point across with the tools that you have. Those tools might be process (thinking) workflow, how to write a functional vlogging script or ??? because we've haven't talked about it. I've never left just been lurking. Gena

He said that Brightcove now hires a third party auditor to review user content for copyright violations and terms of service violations. Their third party auditor identified the music in my video as copyrighted material. I had 5 days to respond. I responded by sending my official license for the copyright of the song, which I paid for and the receipt for. They said they couldn't take my receipt or the copy of the license given to me when I purchased the license for the use of the song. So I had to involve the company I purchased the music from. That company went through the trouble of verifying the license to Brightcove. Then Brightcove said that's not good enough. Now I have to have the copyright holder, the person who created the music, contact them. And, that person had to use the official Brightcove paperwork, fill it out, send it in, or my video would be taken down. I don't know about any of you, but hunting down the musician, getting him/her/them to fill out an official form for you and submit it seems a bit overkill to me. I understand the copyright issue. [videoblogging] Re: Ideology
In regards to your question about 3rd party candidates the answer if simple. They do not make collective use of the opportunity they have to get their viewpoints across. They do not vlog. I was doing some kind of research, I think around the time of Pixeloden. I truly wanted to find Libertarian, Peace and Freedom or other political party videos either by the parties themselves or their supporters. To make sure I found groups I didn't know about I found a list of American political parties. It was extremely difficult. I came up with maybe three videos and the quality was so poor I couldn't use it. Not from the John Birch party, not from the Green party. M$M has no financial interest in representing parties that do not contribute to their bottom line. That is why the League of Women voters were systematically eased out of their long term roll of presenting debates with candidate from more than the RepDems. The RepDems wanted control over the process. That is why the debates suck big time. The tools are there for everybody to use. Party supporters need to be educated on how to use them, I am all for that. Maybe that is a form of outreach vloggers ought to consider. Has Ralphie taken the time to post a video explaining why he is running *and* engage viewers in a dialog about what he feels is missing from the current process? Nothing and no one is stopping him from doing that. He won't. Not his style. Now maybe he shouldn't do it on YouTube but he has that option. One of thing I've noticed while following some of my favorite video bloggers on Twitter, Flickr, etc, it seems that most subscribe to a particular political ideology. Basically, most are supportive of a Democratic candidate. i wont contest that and it's def safe for me to assume. aside from the usual suspects of age/demographic etc... you can sprinkle in some general disgust with the Bush years. it's an embarrassment. then sprinkle in the celebrity that is Clinton and Obama and the pursuit of being the first respectively. Online Video caters to all candidates. The supporting audience on sites like Youtube will be heavier on the dems side for all the aforementioned reasons and more. But as we see with the Spitzer drama, nobody is protected from criticism and abuse when it is so very deserved. The real question for me and I WISH for many others would be Why can't our 3rd party candidates get the respect, attention and consideration that is so readily handed over to the Democrats and Republicans... when both of those parties are broken and have been for a long time. In other words, In a country where a guy like Nader gets trashed by the msm and the general public (mostly brainwashed by the msm) and of course by both of the big parties. Maybe a more viable video site that makes sense is the one for true independents. A Bull Moose Revival, if you will. Although the idea of talking about this only in respect to video seems wrong. Why is video a different beast? This bleeds into everything. I keep my eyes on NewsU to find out what is going on http://www.newsu.org I think it depends on the integrity of the newspaper and the resources available. In Los Angeles the Los Angeles Times bought up ever local city paper in the surrounding area. Overtime we lost those people who knew their areas, their beats and what was the historical background of an area. There has been no effort to experiment with the city and regional papers to tell stories but the old way. The only reason they were purchased was to keep the competition from gaining any ground. It effectively killed off all of the new startup papers. [videoblogging] My Amends To Robert Scoble
Robert I want to specifically address an issue you have brought up and I don't think you were being heard. You took a lot of heat concerning the Podtech - Censorship of Loren debacle. Words were said and mud was flung in all directions. Upon reflection, I don't think folks separated you from the company or in fact the actual person that generated the situation in the first place. I think we as humans start to classify folks as personalities and not as real people. I met a very nice person (this would be you) a few years back. We talked as regular folks. To be honest I tend to do that with everyone I met. But others treat you as The Scoble with reverence. The other side of that seems to be intense anger when there is a disagreement. It is not right but there ya go, it is human. Part of it is the celebrity thing. The other side of it is somedays we just do not act according to our better natures. I didn't speak up and say Hey, he didn't cause this situation why are you going after him? I have been to other events where folks wouldn't part their lips toward me because I'm not an A - Lister. This is a good thing as it cuts down on the amount of BS I have to produce. I'm aiming for zero emissions. When I look at the comments section of your blog those folks play rough. I don't know how you can plow through that stuff on a daily basis. What is scary is that these folks like your writing but are almost cannibalistic in how they respond to your posts. You may or may not have good reason to deal with this group again. I don't know. But I do want to say that speaking for myself only I acknowledge the dog piling you received and it wasn't right. For whatever part I played I'm sorry and I heard what you said. Gena
[videoblogging] Re: your thoughts on tapes vs HD?
I've used DV tapes, SD Memory Card with Xacti and have a JVC HD Camcorder. Tape Advantages: In terms of quality the DV tapes have HD footage beat in terms of quality and a wee bit more flexibility with low light levels. Tape Disadvantage: The time it takes to convert it to digital and then you can start working with the footage. Also the amount of tapes and the available hard drive space is going to mount up. You could save the raw footage to DVD. HD Camcorder Advantages I'm using a basic level JVC HD Camcorder so the newer models might be different. Cost savings on tape purchase is a big one. I can record 7 hours on a 30GB hard drive at high quality. In decent light the video quality is just slightly below DV tape. Fairly easy to transfer to computer for editing - with a huge exception. HD Disadvantage: In low light it sucks. Also it is a pain to figure out ways to convert (in JVC) case. For the model I have I either have to rename the file extension MOD to MPG then use MPEG Streamclip to de-interlace the video. Or I save it as a DVD and de-interlace and copy to the file format I need. Depending of the skill level of the users it can get complicated. You will use a lot of storage space or you have the option of saving on DVD or your computer. I really want a good hard drive camcorder with is flexible with light quality. I'm not sure that I've seen that happen yet. I'm not going back to tape but I might have to wait until the technology catches up to my needs. My two cents, Gena http://outonthestoop.blogpsot.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Deirdre Straughan [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Here's the sitch: I am trying to get every office I deal with at Sun (6 - 10 sites worldwide) to have a videocamera they can use to capture presentations etc. which can then be edited and re-used for sharing knowledge, training, etc. Usually the raw footage will be sent to me for editing, posting, and making into DVDs. That last point is important: I need good enough quality somewhere that a DVD is going to look reasonable (especially considering that filming will usually take place in less than optimum conditions); highly compressed MPG may not be good enough. One problem we've already run into is how to ship around large amounts of raw footage: these talks run 45 minutes up to 3 hours, and an hour of raw DV AVI = about 12 GB. Even Sun doesn't have the bandwidth for that to be a fast transfer, and I certainly don't have it at home. My gut feeling is that the best solution is MiniDV - tapes are easier to mail around than hard disks. But I'm willing to be told otherwise. I don't know the state of the art in HD-based camcorders these days - what do they compress into? How big are the resulting files (per minute)? They are 'signatories' with unions, and agree contractually to play by union rules. Unless you want to use someone like Dan (who's in the union) in one of your productions, you won't have a problem. As Dan has said, SAG has contracts that allow union actors to work on extremely low budget experimental and student films that are actually doable for small production companies. As far as I know, IATSE doesn't. Let's say you have a production company that's making a lot of episodes and lots of money, and shooting in very public spots in very union cities. There's a chance that you would come up as a blip (couldn't resist) on the union radar. The union might then approach you to become a signatory, to 'organize' your shoot. Unions have come on to independent film sets and organized them. At that point, talent and techies on the project are offered the chance to join the union. If the crew agrees to be organized, the production company kinda has to go along for the ride or shut down or re-crew. IATSE Local 52 dues are $250 annually, plus a small percentage of every dollar you make is deducted like FICA from each paycheck. It did cost a bit for the initiation ($2,400 in 1996 if I recall correctly). Production companies are responsible to make that % deduction and turn that money over to the union. In addition, production companies contribute X dollars per day (or hour, depending on the type of contract), from their pockets toward health and pension benefits. If you're not making any money or using union techies / talent, I wouldn't worry. Union folks occasionally work for free on small projects for friends and friends of friends, but it's frowned upon. As Enric notes, union reps are not that receptive to potential new members - especially when there's not a lot of work - and require some hoop jumping, including but not limited to extreme perseverance (translation: groveling). You may always operate outside the union, if you are an independent producer, but there may be limitations in using union members or in distributing videos through union signatories. That is the same in preexisting video and film formats. There are more shared points that the union would have with producers and distributors of content. One in particular is piracy, and the violation of copyright. I have suggested that in the coming negotiation with the networks and producers for the AFTRA contract, that the performer and union retain their right to sue Youtube or another entity that profited illegally from their work and image. This would be an adjustment in language, because the current release transfers copyright to the producer, and it is the producer's responsibility to seek damages. Without drilling down into more specifics, I would like to say that a union can serve performers, creators and producers well. It is the loss of revenue from work that is the biggest threat to all. Just ask people in the music industry. Perhaps there will be an adaptation of the unions to include small producers who perform and create, and the rights for all can be protected. I don't think there is a way to bully anyone out of the sphere now. Not as long as there are video cameras, and places to post videos. What they can do is to help the performer and creator earn some revenue from the further distribution of their work in digital formats, and recover part of that revenue stream be it in paid download, or on a site or format that includes advertising. [videoblogging] Re: I'm Baack - With A Problem
This is a tricky little rascal. I seriously think it is a missing codec issue. The thing is .asf is a old standard M$ codec. (Yeah, I know, it is actually a wrapper) I've run a number of tests: Played it with my Windows Media Player 11 - No problem. Windows Movie Maker 2 No problem, played the video and it was fine. Ulead Video 9 and imported the file - played with no problems. Imported into SwishVideo without problem. Imported into Serif Movie Plus 5 without problem. So I got to messing around with a few conversion programs. I installed one called MediaConvert. It is freeware but I don't like software that tries or needs to connect to the Internet to function. Anyway before I yanked it off my system I did have it do a properties check: Downloads\IMAG0003.ASF Format : Windows Media File size: 9.19 MiB PlayTime : 1mn 28s Bit rate : 867 Kbps Video #0 Codec: FFmpeg MPEG-4 Codec/Info : Microsoft MPEG-4 (hacked MS MPEG-4) Bit rate : 816 Kbps Width: 640 pixels Height : 480 pixels Aspect ratio : 4/3 Resolution : 24 bits Audio #0 Codec: ADPCM Codec/Family : ADPCM Codec/Info : Intel ADPCM Bit rate : 32 Kbps Channel(s) : 1 channel Sampling rate: 8000 Hz So the codec that you seem to need is the FFmpeg MPEG-4 Now I checked my video codecs from the XP Device Manager and I don't have that codec. I do have the legacy video codecs from Microsoft and the DivX codec I downloaded a trial copy of Xilisoft Video Converter. That seems to work on the .asf files. I just have short samples of .asf (lost a bunch in a crash or two) so it did work but the samples was too short to evaluate properly. I tried it on an .avi and it worked fine. So if you download to test make sure you record longer than 6 minutes cuz it cuts off after 5. Anything shorter and it does a percentage that can't be viewed. Options: 1. Can you take the camcorder back where you got it? It is a pain in the tushie to have to go through this just to work with the video file. 2. Another option is to download another codec pack - From Codec Guide http://www.codecguide.com/ the K-Lite Codec Pack Full should back fill the missing codec one way or another. Or you could download DivX Player/Codec and see if that does the trick, it is free and might be compatible with the hacked format. 3. Test out http://www.xilisoft.com/video-converter.html and see if that does the trick for you. If it does and you can't bogard the camcorder it might be a good idea to purchase it and save yourself some additional angst. 4. I really didn't like the interface to MediaCorder but you might feel different. I didn't transcode with it cuz I couldn't figure out how to do that in under 10 minutes. http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/ 5. From the Vitual Dub forum came this tip: Windows Media Encoder 9 will produce videos with MS's ISO MPEG-4 v1 codec (fourcc MP4S). This option is only available if you choose constant bitrate (CBR) encoding for the video. Here's a brief walkthrough (if you have time to read it). I'll assume you have your original video file ready. Start Windows Media Encoder. You'll get the wizard. Pick convert a file. Select your file, then for How do you want to distribute your contents pick 'File Archive'. Click next a couple more times. UNCHECK begin converting when i click finish. Then click finish. Now click on properties. Sources pick what you want to include/exclude (video and/or audio). Now for the compression tab click on edit then click on new (under import/export). Type a name. Video should be CBR by default. Just pick ISO MPEG-4. Set your framerate at the bottom (depending on what your player supports). Then click on add and add a bitrate. You can use K and M to shorten (for example 400 K, or 10 M). Then set your audio format, video size, frame rate, buffer size, video smoothness, and keyframe interval to your own liking. Click apply, then click start encoding. That's all I got for you right now. Pat I love a challenge. I've downloaded your .asf video file. I'm going to be out for most of the day so I'll get to tinkering with it when I come back later this evening. In the meantime, MPEG Streamclip is use to convert file formats, not edit movies. The reason I recommended it was that it was a way to convert mp4 to .avi so you could edit in WMM2. I'm a little miffed that Mustek is mis-representing their product format. Maybe other folks can get to it before I can. Either way it will yield to my software army of conversion products. Hi Pat, I'm a little puzzled because I did have a camcorder that recorded in .asf WMM2 handled it just fine. It is a M$ format. But when I went to the website they clearly state that it digital video is in .mp4. Hmmm. Here is what I think you should do. Get a free copy of Square5 MPEG Streamclip http://www.squared5.com Streamclip can't open .asf but it can handle .mp4 If that doesn't work (and I think it will cuz it is a dang good program) there are other options. One of those is an on-line converter like the one at http://media-convert.com Just upload the video and download an converted copy in the format of your choice. It is the codec status that STUMPS THE HELL OUT OF ME. The screen resolution is 640 x 480 (Which is the factory default setting for some oddball reason). It is because Windows Media can't render it that I can't get another player to play it (I've tried EVERYTHING under the freakin' sun from MPC to obscure players like GOMplayer (Which like MPC will play everything under the sun AS WELL AS partial downloads from file sharing networks). I've also tried converting it to a traditional WMV video using WME and Movie Maker (More on MM in another post as I have another problem there too) and tried converting it to AVI using STOIK VideoPak and VirtualDub. I've also tried converting it to MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 using TMPGEnc (Which usually works on just about anything related to Windows Media). Not everyone wants base level content. We have that on M$M. Part of our job is to connect with those folks who do want something different. (I'm especially talking to you David Howell!) I know this because there is TeacherTube, GodTube, a host of green and ecology videos, and people like myself trying to extend the voice of substance into the future. I feel that non-tech folks and newbies don't know all of the option available to them when it comes to watching web videos. I've mention this before but when I do blogging/vlogging presentations one of the first thing that is mentioned it oh like YouTube? I then explain that that is one option of viewing videos. There are other options. The second reaction I get after I show them different kinds of videos is usually is Why wasn't I told about this?. MySpace is now owned by Fox - corporate media. The have licensing agreements with other content corporate media stakeholders who will refer folks to MySpace. Google owns YouTube. They have contracts with major networks who will repeat what they have been told to say, i.e. Go to MySpace and See it on YouTube You can only know what you are taught. Or repeat the lie until it becomes the truth. We have to accept that technologically people want it easy and comfortable and non-threatening. Until searching for quality vlogs and web video content becomes as easy as opening a refrigerator door folks are going to take the easier path. The reality is that YouTube made it easy to find content.
[videoblogging] When to Let It Go...
I have thought about giving up vlogging for a while. Not going to do it just yet but I want to respect some of the other folks that are thinking about it. It is important to give this a voice. It might be the right thing to do. How can I think such a thing? A long time ago I had my own website. It was a pain to update, just to add text entries and photos took hours. Adding a little .swf or video file? Egad, the horror of the memory. I had no way of knowing who came to the site. It was a long personal URL and no one ever remembered it, even when I wrote it down. It was a time sink without a return on investment. After three or so years I gave it up. Fast forward 10 years. Technology has made it easier for me to update my material via the blog interface. I can upload video, know who is viewing and make adjustments. It is not a time sink but a joy and a weekly or bi-weekly challenge. My content is being seen and not on YouTube. If it is a pain to set up and maintain a blog don't do it. There are other paths. If you are willing to share content ownership for viewership or for attracting folks to your main site go for it. It will always comeback to: 1. Why are you doing this? 2. What are you getting out of the experience? 3. Is it enough or do you need more? 4. If it causes you to suffer (and not in a good way), then stop. When you are ready, start again. There are no absolutes. You could just take an extended break? A Sabbatical? Or get on with other aspects of your life.

[videoblogging] Re: Please help me with Green TV, Lori Lake
There are a couple of things I was musing over as I read your post and the others. I think that first you have to have content no matter if the others contribute or not. I don't think you have to abandon your original ideas because I think that there are a lot of people jumping in on the green bandwagon as in carpetbaggers selling the buzz of the week. I think a lot of good can come from continuing to show your actual expertise in real people making health environmental changes. I think it can be profitable if folks know about your skills and knowledge. Second, I think you have to find out where the green folks, sustainability people and the environmentally conscious hang their shingle. They might not want to produce regularly but they may have a video or two that they want to share or contribute to GreenTV. If you make it known to them that this is an option you could be swimming in content. From BlogHer there are writers who are connected to the green side of blogging. Stroll through and see who you can hook up with. http://blogher.org/blogher-topics/green-eco-conscious So yeah, for me it is defining the content, finding the folks and then building the network one person/video at a time. I do agree that a management system has to be in place otherwise you'd never be able to leave the house. You don't want it totally automatic because there will be video trolls and spammers that will need to be stopped at the gate. Oh an that not an activist statement. Yes, you are. Per Webster's A doctrine or practice that emphasizes direct vigorous action especially in support of or opposition to one side of a controversial issue. If you didn't believe this you couldn't take this next big step. You might not be like other activists but that is ok. There is enough work to go around. I write to find how Green TV could make a great interactive site and the reason is not my existing Green TV web site or content. Since going live on the internet less than 1-year ago, I have had people from all over the globe asking how they could contribute their green photos and/or videos (ranging from amateurs to architects, local politicians to government leaders, educators to media) After much thought, I decided to forgo my original Green TV platform and move towards allowing others to create their own Green TV stations like GreenTV.com/India, GreenTV.com NewYork and so on. The site I like for my Green TV stations to be modeled after is http://cu.naturalhomemagazine.com/ yet it does not accept videos yet, however, it would provide a basic idea of what people coming to Green TV want to report on; Green building projects, green people in their community, green business/government/educator leaders again, all on a local to them basis. Got bit by the mouse (Disney) huh? Yeah, I'm not surprised. With some of the republican candidates refusing to participate in the originally stated premise of joint citizen involved debates I'm not all that shocked about this turn of events. ABC said one thing and did another. The stomach churns. In my cynical state (which I will soon appease by eating some Tuna Curry), why would ABC News cede any time to responsible vloggers or true citizen input? Yes ABC Entertainment will take your work and not compensate you but the old school news department will not allow entry by the teaming masses. Not going to happen without a good reason or profit motive. If some of the republicans didn't want to participate then they should have gone ahead with the ones that would have shown up. What would have been more reveling and less embarrassing except to the ones that didn't show up? As far as Amanda is concerned it is ridiculous that as a vlogging ABC News person she may or may not have been consulted or even if she was able to offer suggestions to the producer in charge was deliberately not being heard. [videoblogging] For Dan McVicar (was Re: Loren Feldman = Technigga)
justification for this video. Good point. There are many BETTER ways to start the exact same conversation without offending people. Perhaps he thinks his role is to break the boundaries of what we consider acceptable and be a shit-stirrer. Fair play. But I say that there are some things that I'd rather people didn't mess about with like rebellious kids, and then claim they have some kind of moral diplomatic immunity because what they're doing is 'satire'. As in everything, there's a line you can cross where you start doing more harm than good. Where that line is, it's hard to tell - so if you care about not doing harm, you have to be careful. Unless you don't care about what harm you do because the controversy helps you get more viewers. Or, unless you don't care what harm you do to people, PERIOD. My goal is not to defend the person or the methods, and certainly not the EFFECT on people. He says Art is a subjective thing which is a totally different argument, and used like this is as big a cop-out as a priest saying God moves in mysterious ways to explain a massive loss of life from a natural disaster. It's worse than lazy thinking, it's cowardice - as is him not commenting or responding to questions. If you don't have the intellectual chops or courage to back something like this up, don't do it in the first place. No doubt, Rupert. None whatsoever. That's why I was waiting before I commented. I wanted to see what his participation was going to be in the conversation that he started, but so far, it's been ZERO. So whatever he really thinks, and whatever spin he puts on it, I reserve my right to call him a dickhead who's doing more harm than good with this video. Without me being accused of being 'hornswoggled' or 'not getting it'. Yes Sir. Absolutely. Same to Gena, who commented earlier. I'm not trying to make excuses for him or the effect he's had on people. It's cruel as well as unfortunate. And I still think the main reason he went through with it was to get a bigger audience, not to 'start a conversation' with any real benefits for the community. Whatever. I'm done. It's possible. I said in my post that I could be completely wrong about the motivations behind this bullshit. It could be merely shock awe, designed to get him more viewers that love to live vicariously through others that feel they can disrespect people and get away with it. -- billcammack http://reelsolid.tv Rupert http://twittervlog.tv/ http://feeds.feedburner.com/twittervlog/ On 5 Aug 2007, at 02:21, Bill Cammack wrote: If you take Loren Feldman at face value, having never seen his antics before and having no idea who he hangs around with in cyberspace, Technigga appears to be an idiotic video created by an idiot. [videoblogging] Re: Loren Feldman = Techwigga, it is not ok.
Oh no mon chere, I would not think it ok if it was funny. Far, far from it. This type of thing hurts me. Every frikin' time - I have internal callouses to buffer the injury but that is a form of my pain that isn't appropriate to share with this group. Maybe I should, but you'd witness a few howls of it is not really related to videoblogging, take it to your blog/vlog. Most of the comments here are what I would expect, was it funny? Did it deliver? The content is seen and not seen. The 'isms are hard to deal with if you don't have to deal with them all the time. We can peep around them and look to other things but the elephant is still in the room. I don't have a choice. It is a consistent aspect of my life that I have to navigate. And so when I see something like this and I want to respond in this group there are constrictions. I have reams to say this video yet I don't want to promote this person's video. I may change my mind. Probably will now that you brought this up cuz I don't want what I first posted to seem to be as acceptance of the content of the video. He has the right to make this video. I have the right to view it and make my feelings about it know. I have to defend his right to make the video because I passionately believe in freedom of speech and expression. That right doesn't stop if I don't like something and want to prevent it being seen. Watching a video that reduces women to sexual appliances that can be tracked for profit hurts. Not to mention the perpetual view that a fractional segment of the African-American community is being represented as how all of us behave, no matter what we do, which seems to be limited to sex and drugs. So that is the reason that there are no Black Tech sites or African-American tech writers? Which is not a true premise to begin with. And for the record, I do not use the N-word or support its use. Thus, my constant change in the name of the video to a term used to describe a person appearing to be of Caucasian decent who is attempting to imitate and affect behaviors of what he or she believes to be Afro American-centric in nature. I'm not trashing anyones comments about this, I want to make that clear. Rupert, I seem to be on a rant and a lot of stuff is coming to the surface. I'm going to go beat a rug or something. Unfortunately, as far as critiquing Technigga, as 'simple' as his concept is, it's actually a very complex video, created by someone who has a complex format of marketing himself. It's a kind of Andrew 'Dice' Clay / guy-you-love-to-hate / guy-who-says-what-people-are-thinking-but-are-too-chickenshit-to-say character he's built for himself. Reminiscent of Morton Downey Jr. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morton_Downey_Jr. um Actually, if you go to that wikipedia page, Loren actually RESEMBLES Morton Downey Jr. :D So anyway, his gameplan is to say a lot of offensive stuff about a lot of different people and a lot of different types of people. His style is inconsistent. He complains and curses in this video http://tinyurl.com/ytrak5 about some guy that said he learned selling from Jewish colleagues (apparently, Loren is Jewish) [Side Note: Andrew 'Dice' Clay was also Jewish, Andy Clay Silverstein http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001048/, which eventually came as a major surprise to a lot of Italians that thought 'The Dice Man' was Italian] So in that video, where he's complaining about the Jewish reference, he says... verbatim: Do you learn how to drink from your Irish friends? Do you learn how to get in the mafia and wack people from your Italian friends? Do I learn how to make fuckin' sushi and attack Pearl Harbor from every fuckin' Japanese guy I know?... That post was dated May 5, 2007. Then, three months later, on August 3, 2007, he drops Technigga and answers his own question of (again, verbatim) ... Where is the, like, the black Scoble?... or... the black TechCrunch? with a dream sequence where he dresses up in character and acts out a single-dimensional version of a black technology blogger. The exact same thing he's complaining about happened to him on May 5th, he turns around and does to other people on August 3rd. Inconsistent. As far as the dream sequence, hahahaha even though in wired, Loren claims to have been a professional actor and comedian http://blog.wired.com/business/2007/08/living-in-1938-.html, unless that's a pen name he selected to do his blog and videos with, there's no sign of Loren Feldman AT ALL on IMDB http://www.imdb.com/find?s=allq=loren+feldman. However, IMDB *HAS* heard of Dan McVicar! http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002743/ hahahaha :D Anyway. Did I LAUGH at the beginning of that dream sequence? HELLS YEAH, I LAUGHED! :D First of all, Loren looked RIDICULOUS in sunglasses, pantyhose on his head and wearing his girlfriend's jewelry! :D That's obviously not a MAN'S chain, so I was laughing from the get. On top of that, he threw on some 1980s or 1990s En Vogue music, which is hilarious on its own if you've ever seen that video. Next thing you know, he's produced drug paraphernalia (which he claims in his comments is not actually his, but just a prop from a friend) and according to comment #47, hit that pipe like he's had some practice. THEN he involves his girlfriend in the video. THEN he fakes drinking bacardi straight out of the bottle with the cap still on it and no liquid moving AT ALL in the bottle... Maybe it's because I'm an editor and I could see how ridiculous and fake the whole setup was, but I was laughing my ass off at the intro. However.
