Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Who is moderating India Mailing list ?

2014-09-15 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hi Viswa,

Adding to HPN's mail

3. Why should mails go selectively passed and selectively discarded?
It is set to selectively pass only for *new members*. This is because of
high SPAs, mostly trollish in nature. Unfortunately, this setting also
applies when people send from their other email addresses (like chapter
email id / unsubscribed other email ids)

4. How come very stale mail messages come after almost a month, just when
they could significantly be more relevant (or more damaging a particular
positive cause) with a changed /new scenario?
Some (or many) messages that were cleared today actually were rightfully
put on hold (either they are advertisements, troll mails, off topic mails).
But since it was not discarded and there were tonnes of such mails, I did
not look into each and just cleared all of them assuming good faith, just
by seeing name and email id of sender. Please be assured, no one has any
interest in moderating mails to support / damage any cause.

Can we then get a report or log of activities?
I dont think mailman offers any such provisions.

A background on moderation policy on this list, thread from 2011[1], after
which myself and Prashanth NS were added as moderators (to have someone not
from the chapter). FWIW, I was a chapter member only briefly and never
renewed my membership, so I don't have any interest in Chapter (or CIS A2K
for that matter).

FWIW, an attempt was made to have agreed mailing list guidelines, but there
was no clousure and this is not enforced. The page Mailinglist Guidelines
on chapter wiki. The problem with rules / guidelines and enforcement is
people would again complain of being strict, which is why this list is
largely unmoderated.

What is criteria for selection of moderators? How long should one be as
moderator?
Anyone who can answer mails, understands mailing list etiquettes, has time
can be one. Few of the community members trusted us(existing mods), hence
we are mods. If the community doesn't trust we cease to be, just let us
know.

I request all recipients to wake up and ask the same questions:

 1. Who all control the mail list and moderate it?
 2. What has been the criteria of their selection? How long they should
remain as administrators to the list?
 3. Why should mails go selectively passed and selectively discarded?
 4. How come very stale mail messages come after almost a month, just when

I propose few more 'acceptable' members are added to the admin list. And
even to get rid of people whom the general community does not probably
 trust any more.

We don't want any more vicious infestations to damage the 'India' context

Hello all,

The Wikimedia Language Engineering team[1] invites Indic wikipedians and
people who are interested in language support for their wikiprojects for a
meetup with us. Language teams are Wikimedia community members with a
common interest (compare with SIG) to help improve, provide feedback and
help educate our language communities of readers and editors about
Wikimedia software enhancements and tools built by the langauge engineering
team. This meetup is to get a face-to-face introduction to language
technologies available on the Wikimedia websites and learn more about how
to best use these. We will be in Pune[2] on the 4th November and
Bangalore[3] on 11th November. (For a change a Bangalore Wikimeetup can be
held in a different part of city :)). Please sign up on the page, looking
forward to meeting you and working together on improving language support :)

 Hi Folks,

I was thinking of experimenting conducting online outreach. I want to try
out if we can do an effective outreach event using a google+ (video)

 * No investment of time/effort/cost in travel
 * Personal attention to each participant (because of individual
 video/screenshare facilities.)
 * No complications of no laptops available at the venue or a limit on
creating user names from a single IP address during the event
 * Lower dependency on institutions/college fests to organize an event for
 us.
 * Not limited by physical presence. Sitting in Kanyakumari, one can
conduct outreach for interested folks in Kashmir!

This is just a trial to test if online outreach is effective, doable and
manageable. This could be one of the ways forward! (Potentially, we could
have more community members doing more events with a more diverse audience.)

Hello all,

Adding to the list of advantages, the entire session gets automatically
recorded and is available on Youtube. (So 1 good session will reach much
more people than participants) I recently participated on one such hangout
and happened to talk about Tamil Wiki projects, Translatewiki etc(though as
stop gap arrangement) and can be watched here[1]. It would be great if this
mode of outreach can be tried again. IIRC the first one did not go all well
due to connectivity issues, but we can always try again!

be told to edit on subjects (None of the wikipedians were not told to edit

[Wikimediaindia-l] Download as ODT in Indic Wikipedia's

2012-06-06 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hello all,

Most of know the Download as PDF feature is not usable on Indic wikis
with Collection Extension due to issues in PDF generation with complex
scripts. While we hope this gets fixed, in the meantime, we can provide
something that's more usable to users. Aamaachu, a Tamil Wikipedia reader
and free software contributor suggested[1] instead of showing Download as
PDF (which downloads an unusable PDF), the link could be Download as ODT
and people who want to take content offline could atleast read them
properly. (MS Office 2007 supports opening ODT files as well). I had filed
a bug[2] for the same and all Tamil Wiki projects now show Download as
ODT on the portlet. Please consider filing similar bugs for your Indic
Wiki project making the experience more usable. Of Course once complex
script rendering in PDF is supported, we can always change / add one more
option to list PDF.

Thank you.

The bug[1] which requires pypdflib[2] (or similar pdf generation library
which Collection extension could use) to be stable / working for
Indic languages which has complex scripts.

A question that would be relevant is whether any device accessing the
Indic Wikipedia (desktop [own/shared], laptop, mobile) will have the
adequate means to handle, display and render ODT formats.

You got a valid point there. Having a PDF option by which one can open but
not use it provides same value as having an ODT which one cannot open.
Generated PDF has glyphs rendered in parts and/or wrong order, one cannot
use them. On the other hand, even if someone does not have capability to
view ODT(let's say people with MS-Office 2000), some people will try to
atleast google ODT, know about ODT,LibreOffice or programs which can open
ODT and the interested ones will download and use it.

On a tangential note, it will be interesting to know the click stats of
links on Collection extension to see how many people use Download as
links.

Good read. Thanks for the post Shiju.

Coincidentally I came across Kaplan's blog[1] about digits and numbers just
yesterday. It was a good read, also throws in implementation (technical +
usage) related issues. I would also like to ask Shiju if Wikipedia
community has the right to adopt the say its own numeral standard without
considering the fact that whole world does not use it. Can Wikipedia be
used as medium to introduce language changes or should the task be just
documenting things?

I ask this because we are also having similar debates about language
style[2] (not to be confused with grantha, which is planned to be discussed
later as grantha will have similar factors + additional factors for
consideration.) and if a Wikipedia can introduce a new language style(not
sentence constructs, but new forms of words[again not technical words, but
new words for nouns which are in popular use] on its own without an
external guideline and there are different thoughts.

Thanks!

not sure how many dialects as has, what other factors made them to create
that many redirects. I would like to hear from them. But if someone is
playing number game (I hope not), it needs to stopped. We have had many
instances of people playing number game on Indic wikis in the past and how
it has negatively impacted / not achieved anything.

If the route through Social media is working, why not try it?

During Tamil Wiki media contest, we found Facebook very useful for
 reaching online photographers community.

During TWMC, engagement was built (liking and commenting) and people
started contributing themselves(some posted on FB, later some moved to
commons) after it reached a mass. Though it could have attracted some due
to the $$ tag it had, I don't think everyone contributed due to it. People
wanted their work to be seen by many and hence contributed photos. But yeah
facebook gives huge numbers in terms of getting eyeballs / pageviews and
spreading the word. I would soon be having *some* statistics of pageviews
coming from facebook / twitter into Tamil wikipedia pages through
tawp.in(Shorturl service Yuvi runs for Tamil Wikipedia whose logs I
have access
to), quick look already gave some surprising data. So we can't write off
facebook / social media that easily but using them for teaching how to edit
is completely different thing.

I would look at numbers here in slightly different way. 400 people are part
of a group. Facebook allows anyone in group to add anyone else into the
group even without the person's acceptance. So this is kind of sending 400
invitations out for an outreach. On most of the messages many people in the
group were prodded for attention (@mentioned) and on average 8% have
replied and participated (made initial edits). This is akin to conducting
the actual outreach. Rentention is something that needs to be seen after a
few months if these users continue to edit voluntarily (having attended an
outreach event).

In all these, I probably don't like the prodding part (in real world I
would compare it to shouting Wikipedia Wikipedia (like tea, coffee)
outside the Wikipedia stall), *after most people know* that there is a
stall (group). But am not sure how else it would be possible to attract
attention of people on facebook (which is meant for connecting with friends
primarily).

On the challanges part, I would like to know, how it can be scaled beyond a
person's network. Since people don't join the group by self, amount of
people who can be reached is low and adding random people from friend's
list into group isn't going to help.

Theo, To be fair to OP(Original Poster) , I see the mail only as an update
and didn't seem like any boasting was done.

I agree with you on involving 'teams' in writing what went right / wrong in
their respective tasks. There is no need for internal consensus and all
that process, there is a talk page[1] and it has edit button on it, people
can sign with 4 ~ after their comments. :) I have a huge list of comments
on how programs could have been better or communications for that

on communicating to delegates, speakers, others). I am going to use the

I urge anyone else involved in other tasks to do the same for the sake

What happened in WCI was a severe burnout. I can't count more than few
people who worked, but there were truckload of armchair advisers. It can't
be fun if that's the case. Looking back, chapter's decision to have a
bidding process would have made everyone aware where there are gaps in

hosting it, but after careful review of what happened in WCI 11 and making
honest efforts in fixing a lot of things / procedures (including finances
/regulations /all drama) and making sure the host city has *enough*
volunteers who are committed to hold an event of the scale.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikitech-l] Introducing: Designs for the Universal Language Selector

2012-05-22 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Since there are many people here who know 3 or more languages and use
multiple language wikis, see if you could help :)

Subject: [Wikitech-l] Introducing: Designs for the Universal Language
Selector
To: wikitec...@lists.wikimedia.org, mediawiki-i...@lists.wikimedia.org,
des...@lists.wikimedia.org

Today we are announcing the designs and interactive prototypes for the
Universal Language Selector.

Wikipedia is available in 285 languages, and MediaWiki has been
translated to almost 400 languages.
Several language-related tools are available to support the
consumption and contribution of content in different languages.
These tools allow users to type text in a language for which their
keyboard is not prepared, download appropriate web fonts to display
non-Latin scripts properly and choose the language of their user
interface.

The Universal Language Selector is a tool that will allow users to
select a language and configure its support in an easy way.
When the number of languages in a list approaches 400, ease of use
becomes both a need and a challenge.

The design process for the selector started with the analysis of user
needs and the definition of representative scenarios to support.
Then, we explored different ideas in the form of sketches and
wire-frames through different iterations.
Finally, we have created interactive prototypes to test whether our
ideas work with real users, and we want to share them with the
community.
More information about the designs has been recently published at the
Wikimedia Foundation blog:
http://blog.wikimedia.org/2012/05/21/introducing-designs-for-the-universal-language-selector/

We are announcing the availability of the Universal Language Selector
designs to gather feedback on the proposed solutions, and ask for
volunteers to test our prototypes.

If you want more details on the designs or want to have ideas for
improvement or criticism on the designs, feel free to do so on the
talk page for the Universal Language Selector:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Universal_Language_Selector#Proposed_design

If you are a speaker of Arabic, Dutch, Hebrew or Hindi, you can also
request participation for the usability tests at http://goo.gl/QpWmu
In less than 30 minutes you can participate in the tests and
experience whether our proposed solutions work in practice for your
specific language community and context.

There is no need to take offense on Arun's comment. It probably came
because he was bothered more about the lack of choice at certain places

Nonetheless, IE7 should still be supported as it still gets 4% (861 M) of
all page requests[2] to Wikimedia. There would be hundreds of people who
might have the choice but prefer to use IE7 as their choice for reasons up
to them and bugs are welcome on IE7 as long as its still in use and
supported by Microsoft.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself to the community and the WMF team, I'm Arun
Ganesh (user:planemad)[1a] from Bangalore, India and have joined as
contractor for the foundation's L10n team[1b] as an Interaction designer
along with Pau to improve the user experience of language tools and
features.

I have been a longtime contributer to both commons[2] and the
openstreetmap[3] project and got involved with foundation work during the
Mumbai and Pune hackathons recently[4][5][6] where I proposed some of the
first ideas for the Universal Language Selector widget with Brandon, with
which we want to make language selection for anyone easy peasy.

Apart from that, I love cartography and maps [7], which would explain my
map contributions and the occasional headline for wikipedia [8], use only
public transport[9] and traveling with my pocket camera[10].

Its feels great to have this opportunity to work more seriously on a
project which has been an important part of my life. I'm new here, I wont
claim to know much, but I hope to make a difference in whichever way
possible. I also look forward to interacting more closely and learning from
the rest of the designers - Brandon, Heather and Pau to do the wonderful
things that designers like to do .So keep the usability bugs coming :)

The Government notified on April 13, 2011 the Information Technology

powers conferred by clause (zg) of subsection (2) of section 87 read with

My intention of forwarding the mail was to get a pulse on 2 things.

1. Scrutiny of the act beyond Internet Censorship and more importantly
where it conflicts with wikimedia movement's goals/mission.IMO while
censorship itself is a good reason to run a protest campaign(geo-located
banners if not Anti-SOPA style action). There are many legal experts from
the community, I would love to hear their understanding/assessment of
impact on this. May be someone could put up a page on meta about this?

2. Are there more people who are interested in this, to take this up on
wiki (in form of an RfC?) and would it be a good idea? or staying silent

A quick comment on the style of getting community input. While I appreciate
IP for trying hard to get sound feedback from community which is good and
very important, but sometimes I feel tired by just looking at things they
ask for. Just look at the questions here[1][2], community is NOT a group of
survey takers who have loads of free time(This has been mentioned somewhere
in meta for research as well IIRC). It is quite obvious that they were
unanswered(may remain so) because it will turn off most people. Lastly,
when we ask for something to be worked upon[3], there is a difference
between seeking input and getting the work done. If only I had the time and
skill to do what I suggested, I would have proposed an RfC myself, why
would I even ask IP to work on it.

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give advance notice about IRC office hours with the
Localization team [1] at the Wikimedia Foundation.

Date: 2012-04-18 (every third Wednesday of the month from now on)
Time: 16.30 UTC
Venue: #wikimedia-office

As usual, more logistical info and time conversion links are available
on Meta.[2] For a taste of what the localization team has been up to,
I highly recommend the blog posts we are have written since out last
office hours in February.[3]

Thanks, and we'll talk to you later next week!

 Hi Wikimedians in India,

Great!

Tamil isn't there in the extension, but I have some feedback / questions.

Does this aim to replace on-screen-keyboard? IMHO its highly unfriendly to
type a name/anything for that matter using it. Its best suited for the
purpose it intended for, i.e Special Characters and should not contain
entire char set(at least when Narayam is available, that should
predominantly be the input method). It would be suitable to have actual
special characters which either don't have key mappings on Narayam / other
standard input methods or those which people don't use frequently and hence
might not remember. Example, I would like Tamil numerals[1] which lack a
way in most input methods to be on this toolbar rather than the entire
Tamil char set.

I see Telugu, Bengali already have their char set, and Marathi filed a
bug[2], but the list of languages / order isn't configurable per project,
which means if Marathi gets added tomorrow, they have to scroll down the
list and is unlikely to be very usable at least in Marathi projects since
few people may scroll down and use it to input.

Other than being a first class citizen and being up within the editor, what
difference does this have against Mediawiki:Edittools ?

[Wikimediaindia-l] Tamil Wiki Media Contest -- Results

2012-03-30 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hi all,

We are happy to announce the results of Tamil Wiki Media Contest[1].

The competition was brutal.(Hence the mild delay in announcing
results) Thousands of high quality files were uploaded for the contest. In
order to award prizes to maximum no of entries/contestants as possible, we
have increased the number of prizes. The files that made it to the final
round but didn't win ultimately were very very close to those that actually
won (in marks basis). Of those the top 100 can be viewed here[2]

A detailed report and blog post will be ready by next week. Thanks for your
support.

IIRC Shiju has been doing the Basic Community Building (covering all
aspects of work detail mentioned) for years now with very decent success

you should call it a program instead of a pilot.

An example of Indic pilot which I can give is conflict resolution /
increasing awareness of Wiki policies / culture to newer/older community
members alike through policy pages and sorting uneasiness between new and
old editors which exist in few Indic wikis. This will lead to fewer cases
of misuse / abuse of wiki-resources against good interest of community /
wikimedia at large.(in effect prevent more cases like the recent RfC on a
Hindi Wikipedian)

Yes, this is a tough task, there are issues in it, but taking up something
like this at least at a smaller level, can be called a pilot, not something
that's been proven successful for years now.

I should be commit to gerrit soon, still reading through workflow.

Where do we go from here? Random thoughts:

More of these? This was pretty much a 'zero cost' event - stickers
were the only 'cost'. A lot of places around the country would love to
have their space used for a hackathon of sorts. Should we do more of
 these kind of 'Unofficial' hackathons?

+1, these also make more people aware that they can hack on Wikimedia stuff!

 Thanks due (in random order)

 1. Thoughtworks/BalajiDamodaran: He graciously hosted us at
Thoughtworks. The biggest challenge for any hackathon is to find a
nice place which understands what hackathons are, and provides what is
considered the lifeblood of a hackathon - working WiFi. Balaji
(@openbala) was incredibly awesome, and this entire thing would've not
been possible at all without him and ThoughtWorks.

Big thanks to Balaji / Thoughtworks who have always been supportive to
us(The first Wikimeetup in Chennai happened in Nov 2010 @ old thoughtworks
office) Venue was just perfect.

 3. Srikanth Lakshmanan: The hackathon was his idea, and he made sure
it was executed in a nice way.

It just happened with @tecoholic asking me WHY NO HACKATHON IN CHENNAI
after not being able to attend Mumbai / Pune ones and Sumana asking me why
don't do I help doing one.

Yuvipanda missed to thank himself, for being patient to all my prodding over
a month, adding a bunch of ideas and for being awesome helping everyone at
hackathon and in the process chose not to work on his AssessmentBar
hack. But this made sure a many others completed their hacks :) (Sorry
AshLin, you will get AssessmentBar very soon!)

Most of all, this event was a success because of the quality and
dedication of the people who turned up, giving up their Saturdays.
Hope everyone who turned up had a nice time :)

+1 and I do hope lot of them continue to hack for Wikimedia :)

Some pictures here. (Urge to sign in more languages like any other India
hackathon made people use Greek, base64, Morse Code Yuvi managed to

There is something called Requests for Comments. There was a mail recently
about an RfC on a Hindi Wikipedia admin recently. So it looks like
community scrutinizes wikipedians too, at least to me, you can have your
opinion if you differ.

My only point here was that more community members must join in to make
sure that a single or a group of Wikipedians do not push POV.

IMHO it would be inaccurate to say single / group of Wikipedians are
pushing POV because others are silent. (Push in pushing POV happens only
when there is a resistance), if there is no one else responding to
conversation, it would just to putting forth views.

There is only one way for all those people. Use Opera mini. Read this

There is also a huge growth in mobile stats this month, 100% (estimated)

would be interested to see the source of traffic for these and I guess we

Having an input method on mobile will help a lot since many people can
search and explore more pages on mobile as opposed to just following links.
Android phones already have apps for Indic input. Even symbian has some,

There is a tool[1] which can help you create list based articles faster by
replacing existing interwiki links. Just copy the list syntax from source
wiki and get names converted in your language with existing links. Please
ensure to translate the remaining part of article which did not get auto
translated. This is not a machine translation, its just a search/replace of
wiki links. Thanks to Mahir (Tamil Wikipedia) for this tool.

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Lesson from the past: Photowalks and other events

2012-03-13 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan

parakara.gh...@gmail.com wrote:

Backend work is key for any photo / GLAM event Using Hisham's words, its
not sexy stuff :P. Its not about uploading 1000's of images, but the real
value is had only when they are used on relevant pages. At the very least
the file should have proper meta data so that some day some one will find
them useful.

2 Things are important when it comes to Photo events from the perspective
of Wikipedia.

1. Usage :-

Efforts must be made to use as many uploaded files as possible in the
articles. Yes, we can only tell others to upload the file to commons,
asking someone who is attending first photo walk / uploading to commons for
the first time to also add it on article may be little too much. So
Wikipedians must take onus in ensuring media uploaded is being used and not
unused.

Most of us fall for numbers which are visible at the outset and feel happy
about these kind of events.I would say Wikipedia Takes Mumbai 1 which added
only 89 files is successful than Wikipedia Takes Mumbai 2 which added 628
files after I check the usage stats[1]. You can also do an audit for the
event you organized / participated. The numbers are abysmally low for all,
which in some sense means the effectiveness of these events in terms of
tangible value to Wiki Projects are lesser (Of course there are other
benefits, like networking, community socializing etc etc)

If on goes by numbers visible at outset, TamilWiki Media Contest might be
most successful of all hunts with 15k files. It even fares well usage stats
with 51%, but if one goes little deeper the actual usage that was added
manually(Wiktionary auto adds pronunciation files, so excluding those) its
just around 20% (which is great for the kind of numbers, but
still). Wikipedia_Takes_Chennai is probably most successful event with 87%
usage, but jokes apart Malayalam_loves_Wikimedia_event_-_2011_April has
done well to get 28% (with 2157 images). [It is bound to be high, since the
ratio of Wikipedians : Newbies is high in Malayalam projects generally]

Of Course all these photo hunts will have same images, so its not possible
to get to 100%, but it should be atleast 40% for it to call a decent
success.

2. Naming and meta data :-

A. Categorize properly. (or Fix it)
B. English Description (or Add it)
C. Get the naming right. (or Fix it)

3 things that we see as leanings from Tamil media contest. Categorizing is
almost done with very few left uncategorized. The result of
which(categorization) is visible here when a Norwegian wikipedian uses
it[3] :) We do plan to fix 2 and 3 for large number of files over course of
next few months, any help welcome :)

Commons folks can give more tips here. TWMC report will have a detailed
section on learnings / best practices.

On a another note, I wonder why no one posted this to the list, but there
has been Marathi Photothon and some 1300+ media files were uploaded[4],
which is great, but just that they chose not to use commons and use the
local wiki instead (bad idea, some Norwegian wikipedian cant use those :( )
There were some wonderful shots of NH4 as well as some copyvios which I
found in a quick glance. Ideally only fair use images must be uploaded to
local wiki's and CC-BY-SA files are best uploaded to commons since projects
across wikimedia universe can use it.

Thanks for reading through.

All,

IIRC, The mailing list guidelines page was created when there was
some ruckus on the list last time. Can we all make a conscious effort to
put across whats acceptable on the list and whats not, there and come
reach consensus, so there everyone can follow them which will save lot of

for this. Even if this 1 hour / rest of the stuff went well, I wonder if it
makes sense for 2 persons to travel for 12+ hours / spend a weekend to talk
for 1 hour. Anyone else who feels it makes sense, please enlighten me. Last
year we spent 8+ hours on stall, 2.5 hours on the academy part.
(Effectiveness is totally another thing)

Also, the fact that i'm a working professional and you are a student
should not have anything to do with it. Bottom-line is that the NIT-T
organizers should have treated us better. We do not need five-star
type accommodation. But some simple courtesy is expected of them. Also,a
week prior to the event, Saagar had promised me transport to and from the
venue. The fact is that they did not seem to really care too much about the
WikiAcademy and treated it like they were doing us a favour.

Courtesy could have been better, but facilities may not always be (Esp in
tier 2 cities). So please try and adjust (if you were asked to travel in
public transport). Yes, they do/might treat you like they are doing you a
favour(I don't see why they would really care), in fact they actually do
*some* favour in giving space for us. The interest you (I barely know you
btw) and I have towards Wikipedia might not be same any organizer at these
events will have. They might have extra interest on swags etc. Most Tech
fests are not run/attended by students with noble intentions of learning
something technical etc.(At best they learn team work, organizational
skills) I said part of the statement about attendees on this list here[1]

In short, when going to a college, keep your expectations to bare minimum
be it on the audience / organizers. If something was good, do appreciate,
otherwise accept it as reality on Indian conditions. There is nothing to be
ashamed / unpatriotic in accepting certain things as Indian reality.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Mobile sites of Indic Wikipedias

2012-02-26 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hi all,

Needless to repeat the India-Indic-Mobile-Growth story. But I was
surprised even with that, many Indic wikipedias do not have a mobile
site(or some have gone dead since they failed to update for
MobileFrontend[1] changes), even the ones that had weren't very much
usable. Lets not cite, mobile phones do not have fonts, no one uses Indic
on mobile, we all know lot of people do use Opera-mini with complex script
rendering support.

* Please visit yourlanguage.m.wikpedia.org and see if there is a page. If
it has nothing but 'search, license, and action control' links, here[2] are
the steps that an admin need to do to get a mobile site running with
content. If you have problem in doing those, come and ask at
#wikimedia-tech (or #mediawiki {?}).

* When I visited Tamil wikipedia mobile site, I was restricted to content
that was put on mainpage, the links in it. Since my Symbian phone doesnt
have Indic input system, I cant search anything. The solution to this is to
have a list of articles in alphabetical order *and* display it in mobile
front page, like Assamese wikipedians have done[3]. Many Indic wikis have
this template, but few show it on main page. This might be incredibly
useful on mobile versions.

More thoughts on improving Mobile sites welcome :)

Mobile sites are important since,

1. Lot of people will be using this.
2. The Wikipedia app uses this(?) [Correct me if am wrong]

This is no where close to anything about outreach. So am replying
here, would like to say 3 things on it.

1. Policies should always be determined, drafted, discussed by the
community. Please sit and watch at bay. Do not interfere with community's
autonomy unless its an extreme situation.
2. Chapter / Programs / Foundation interference on these must be minimal,
only when there is a extreme danger to the health of wiki / risking the
entities. (Interfere if a wiki is not drafting copyvio policies and is soft
on it)
3. There might be people who understand Wikipedia culture differently,
people having no idea about Wiki culture who reboot the inactive
communities, in such cases, India Programs should only be helping educate
those users about core values, policies in other wikis and the decision on
policies must always be taken by the communities themselves.

person who logged becomes inactive, they go into black hole and there is
 no
one to follow up(even if its fixed, they remain open).

There is nothing to be distressed here.

Srikanth, this is distressing to hear! If you could point to some
specific Bugzilla reports that have gone into the black hole,
including ones that no longer reflect reality, I could help ask the
localisation team to follow up and at least put some updated information
in the issues at bugzilla.wikimedia.org .

They are called black hole for the reason anyone(apart from the filer /
folks who conversed) might not be able to easily spot them. In most cases
the bugs lack update from the filers / language communities. But again if
the filer is from one generation and has retired, who does the follow up?
Ideally language support teams must do it. But all of us know Indic
communities have very few people to look into these and the common pattern
I have found across few communities I have interacted is that spending time
on bugzilla / improving technology/language support is not going to change
things big way, so I might as well be contented (Ex:- Why Narayam when js
works fine) with whats there and do my editing. But at some point,
communities need to focus on these, as and when the communities grow, they
will also get contributors who are interested in supporting the language
technically.

 But the larger
issues are common and pretty much known to i18n team. (like say PDF
rendering). I tried cleaning up Tamil related bugs recently which were
  documented here[1] since 2006, also created a tracking bug[2].

But then as someone else said, People are just waiting for one more
tracking bug to fix those. ! //So tracking bugs don't help beyond a
 point !

This is also distressing to hear! I'm not quite sure what was implied
there -- did the speaker mean that the localisation team won't address
certain problems until there are more tracking bugs to help track
 issues, or something else?

The quote was from one of the bugs I remember seeing on bugzilla, said by
someone on a totally different bug nothing related to localization. The
point I implied quoting it was process for the sake of it doesn't help
much beyond a point. Adding tracking bugs does not impact the age of the
bug. The bugs remain open either because they are hard to solve / lack of
bandwidth / lack of input / variety of other reasons, not because no one is
tracking them. Adding a tracking bug wont magically fix the bug / help in
the getting it to closure. But tracking bug serves useful especially for
anyone new to see what are problem areas, how can I help fix / test / not
report duplicate bugs etc.

Most, if not all Indic issues would be tagged with i18n keyword on
 bugzilla.

Yes, adding the i18n keyword to an issue in Bugzilla will help bring it
to the attention of the localisation team.

Another point, Not all Indic wikipedia related issues are i18n issues,
though there might be heavy overlap. There are site requests like changing
logo, namespace, installing extensions whatever. The point to note is,
when someone does these things in any Indic community(which already have
tiny community), please keep the community widely posted / document these
somewhere. Not just issues, but solutions/workarounds, gadgets used, things
like abuse filter rules(if any) and its rationale behind etc. This will
help someone else in your community(who may come years later) to follow up
even if you retire / had forgotten. Fortunately Tamil Wiki community did
that from the beginning(at least the major ones,if not everything) in the
form of a page[1] and I was able to go through, know the past issues, update
it after almost 2 years! I felt a tracking bug might be easier to track on
issues than a page, so I just created one.

Thanks for mentioning this problem, Srikanth.

This problem is not restricted to bugzilla. This may even happen in say in
translation or anything, where only a subset (ideally 1-2 in a community of
10) involve in the activities and do not document / pass over the knowledge
properly.Smaller Wikipedias must not rely on select individual on anything
so much that they become extinct/dormant after their wiki-time
(Insert story of Bishnupriya Manipuri) I hope Shiju is reading and might
be able to relate to it / research on solutions :)

[Wikimediaindia-l] BSNL DNS Blocking Wikipedia?

any idea?

My guess is BSNL DNS is playing some game here (IIRC they have local DNS
for each telecom circle). As for the geekish users, they would know to use
opendns, ways to access *.wikipedia.org etc. But this needs to be looked at
seriously. This is not the first time am hearing something like this on
BSNL DNS. If we identify the problem, can the chapter / programs do

[Wikimediaindia-l] Fwd: [Wikitech-l] FeaturedFeeds deployed

2012-01-26 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hello all,

This makes the featured content available and share-able in more machine
readable format and also gives many possibilities.

1. Blogs / Websites can now carry content feeds from Wikipedia /
WikiProjects
2. Feeds can be posted automatically to facebook pages to share featured
content socially.
3. Mobile and apps (but untill fonts / rendering is fixed, it might not be
as much useful)

I just tried to pull up On This Day content from Tamil Wikipedia onto my
blog with a widget, it was just matter of few minutes to make it
happen. Please share this with content websites and if they are interested
in giving us some space, please take this forward. Let me know if you need
help in setting up these for your wiki's.

This will however be fruitful only if featured content gets
generated consistently. You might also want to read more about importance
of Front Page content(in Tamil Wiki Community) here[1]

We haven't enabled feed links in the sidebar like on our staging wiki

Overall, I'd apreciate your critics, comments, suggestions. Also,

Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Outreach opportunities: Wikipedia workshops at tech fests

2012-01-19 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
FWIW Some thoughts below.

1. Footfall measures dont mean much from our POV. If 1000 people attend a
college tech fest, at best 200 will walk near where our stall is put up,
50-100 might come and hear us, 10 might engage in discussion(mostly to
clarify doubts on their previous edit experiences), 1/0 might start editing
after the day. If you say all 1000 will come and listen to us on the stall,
Please attend one, you will know. If you still think college student mass
attend tech fests for learning from these programs that run on tech fest, I
cant help you, that's just a minority. (Any student on the list who can
speak form heart on why student mass attend these events without trying to
be politically correct?)

2. It is good to do a general outreach + academy for maximum 1-1.5 days,
but its good to get the facts straight, especially if there is a hint of
sponsoring / spending big time for these events since in all probability
this has to be equally treated with any other city outreach events (In
fact I would rate the latter better, since people attend those for
Wikipedia as sole reason, hence may most likely have more interest)

3. This crowd (mostly Engineering students who attend these tech fests) are
mostly aware about Wikipedia (Heck just go and look at college articles,
people come and spam about when events happen to get publicity), So its not
even like we are reaching unknown / outside online world folks who are
target in bookfairs(for ex) which are similar in many levels.

Regards,
Srikanth L

PS : Am mentioning the above facts with a notion that physical outreach in
general gives better returns, which I might not agree wholeheartedly.

+1 to Pranav's comment on lack of a local team. The main problem as I see

much help to someone in Bombay.

While local team is one thing. There were still lot of things that people
could have done sitting elsewhere. Beria did some amazing work with keeping
up the portal and posting messages, she was not even in India. There were
many others from many cities and few countries who made this conference
happen, in the sense it was not just Mumbai community but some location
agnostic wikipedian community that pulled the event off together. The
problem with WCI was both lack of local as well as online volunteers and it
was not like people weren't there. They were very much happy in giving
advice on the list(the archives can speak for itself). So when the emphasis
on Strong local team was made by Pranav, it must be read as having a
large enough community of Do-ers than talkers for the scale of event. I
strongly don't foresee the next edition of WCI happening in 2012, leave
alone Wikimania 2013.

[Wikimediaindia-l] Mailing list Guidelines

2012-01-04 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hi all,

Off late the traffic to India list has gone up much more than what it was
before (already a highly active list!). During the last couple of months,
we moderators have got requests from members that the list is becoming
pointless due to the volume of mails and quality of threads. I propose,
together we all write down some list guidelines and follow them to make the
list more productive. New members will be sent this guideline when they
join the list.

Please feel free to help out by making the list guidelines[1] (Which is a
very rough draft now)

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC/Guidelines has some related points which
can be used by us too. Lets be inspiration for others :P . Frankly list
needing to have guidelines mean that we haven't used it to optimal level or
there are large influx of newbies on list. (Others might not need since
they already use optimally / may not have too many newbies like us)

[Wikimediaindia-l] StatisticsBot for closer look on Indic numbers

2011-12-26 Thread Srikanth Lakshmanan
Hi all,

ar:User:OsamaK had developed a pywikipedia based bot to collect daily
stats[1] and has been running for over 2 years. I had just translated it
and started running for Tamil wikipedia here[2]. I am now looking
ApiSandbox[3][4] to build queries which will get more data(Bot activity,
number of users with atleast 1 edit on the day, anon edits etc) which might
be useful to log and keep track on daily basis.let me know if some other
parameter might be useful to collect.

Feel free to run this on your Indic wiki project and observe the numbers :)
This can help notice sudden spikes on any parameter on day-day basis and
help relate to some event (outreach / real world events)

Thanks to Osama for the base code, the english version of which is
available here[5]. Please feel free to fork and and add to it :)

this. Apparently Bala learnt this from Osama and he learnt about wmf grant
process from Bala :)

What do you mean India's position? Are you asking for the
A) Position of people who are for/against censorship on Internet including
Wikipedia?
B) Position of people on this list?
C) Position of Indian editors majority of whom prefer to stay outside this
list?

I don't think there is any single thing all will agree on, leave
