RE: looking for advice re kitty prozac
I tried amytriptaline (that's probably spelled wrong!) on Ruben for inappropriate urination.I now believe that it was his first signs that something was wrong with him internally My daughter used the same drug (we had it compounded into a cream we could rub into the ear...pilling was out of the question) on one of her male cats...her cat became more calm, but I'm not sure it completely solved the problem. I have heard people are having great results with the plug ins that release certain pheremones that are calming, but I haven't tried them yet myself. Good luck, it's one of a cat owner's biggest problems!!Debbie (COL)You gotta bloom where you're planted! Subject: looking for advice re kitty prozacDate: Fri, 20 Jun 2008 16:40:25 -0500From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Dear all Has anyone ever used a kitty Prozac such as fluoxetine? One of my co-workers whose cat has always been a sprayer--and she's had him for YEARS, kudos to her---was thrilled when 1/2 tab fluoxetine daily fixed the behavior almost immediately. Unfortunately he began foaming at the mouth at the same time, so she stopped using it after a few days. Does anyone have any experience in using an alternative prozac that worked for spraying without causing foaming or other adverse side-effects. She says she's going to the vet to ask about a different one after she returns from vacation, and I thought I'd try picking your brains before she went. I think it's wonderful that--unlike so many people--she's committed to her cat despite his spraying. I have a sprayer too, but he's feral, so there's nothing I can use (he's not into any sort of treat on a regular basis, and he turned his nose up at Pillpockets) apart from a dividing line between him and the cause of his behavior, my other cats. He has his own loyal buddy, a female, Momcat, so he's pretty content on the whole, I think. Anyway, thanks for any other prozac ideas! Kerry _ IRS CIRCULAR 230 NOTICE. RE: Sissy has joined Hobbs, 6/27/08
Heather, I would like to introduce myself...I joined a couple of week back. I have been fostering/rescuing kittehs for the past 11 years in the Sanford/Orlando area. My first and only experience with Felv was not too long ago...and frankly, I knew next to nothing about the dise...ase...imagine my horror in finding out that an adult cat can throw the virus!! Mr. Thomas, a gorgeous cat who wandered into my life, turned out to be +...after they did his neutermyvet at the time told me he could NOT be outdoors anymoreand that he was putting all of my other 13 rescues at risk if I kept him inside...I find myself wondering if this darling young fellow might have survived...had I just researched a little more...I found may sanctuaries and shelters that would take FIV cats, but not one that would help with Felv.my heart still aches for Mr. Thomas. Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that I am close by if you should ever need anything.Debbie (COL)You gotta bloom where you're planted! Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2008 15:42:56 -0400From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Sissy has joined Hobbs, 6/27/08 With much sadness, I wanted to share with everyone that Hobbs' sister, Sissy, has now joined him. The loss of her dear brother affected Sissy very much, which was to be expected as they were quite bonded, and she began to take a similar road as Hobbs did in his final days. Their people-Mom Jann had wanted to avoid Sissy suffering as she felt Hobbs did, and had planned for her to cross this morning, though unfortunately they had a very bad night, and stayed the night in the garage together, where Sissy had actually been spending a lot of time lately. I apologize that I haven't been active since the outpouring of support from you all regarding the loss of Hobbs, unfortunately the following week we lost another FELV+ rescue, Shennanigans (whom a friend in another city had given a home to for these last 3 months), and also a dear Torti rescue named Freckles who we found living in a woman's yard, very ill and with an old very uncomfortable injury. She was such a sweet, beautiful kitty and her spirit really touched us all very much, a rescue was assisting with her medical care but force feeding with her injury was very stressful for Freckles, and her caregiver, and given the severity of her illness (which prevented her from being a candidate for surgery for her long-healed injury, unless she made a remarkable recovery), they felt it was best to release her from her pain. I found out after the fact and have struggled with it ever since as I feel I didn't do enough for her, soon enough, and wonder if things could have been different. Shennanigans was a beautiful little charcoal grey long haired kitty whom we found outside at my vets, likely dumped around Febuary. She appeared to be only 4 - 5 months old, though we aren't really sure. The woman who she went to live with said her vet thought she might be older than we initially thought, she wasn't spayed when we found her and I still think she was a pretty young kitty. Her initial FELV test was a weak+. I really should have posted about Shennanigans here but was fairly numb with all of the loss.I was not the direct caregiver, but the rescuer, for these kitties so can only imagine what my friends have been going through as they loved them all dearly. Even if it was only for 3 months, I know Shennanigans spent those last 3 months sleeping in a bed with someone, though she was afraid of the other cats. What Jann did for Hobbs and Sissy, giving two little FELV+ kittens a home which is so hard to find, I will be eternally grateful for.I hate the pain it's caused her, yet she is such a giving soul and does nothing but thank me for entrusting her with their care and for the precious time she had with them over this last year. While I am always full of doubts as to how I handle things, I am so confident in the wonderful, loving happy lives they had with Jann, no matter how short. I just hate how painful the end has been. She still has their Mother, a double+ kitty I found at my new job with an eye ear injury, she has outlived all of her kittens--I found them all last April under a trailer behind my new office. I had moved accross campus after almost 20 years in the same building, and kept looking for a sign from God as to whether I should make the move...when I found Mom her babies, and their testing status, I knew had anyone else found them they'd most likely have immediately been put down, and that they were the sign I was looking for. We also have a new Leuk+ rescue, this poor kitty had scabies so bad his eyes were crusted shut (and still are quite infected), a friend made a heroic rescue standing on a truck and plucking this kitty out of a tree, and it hit hard when we found out he was leuk+. We are still looking for a home for him, and he is still boarding at

I thought I was loosing him and I didn't even know if an emergency vet would treat him because of his disease. Do they? The good news is that I didn't need to find out, he's snapped out of it. I've been treating him for an upper respiratory problem and an eye infection. He also has ulcers on his mouth, poor boy! The little cat is a wreck, but he appears to have turned the corner. As of today, his mouth is healing, his eye isn't running and his breathing is normal. I do not want to get my hopes up too much, but I sure do want the little boy to stay with me. I can't believe how many tears I have shed for a little guy I've known less then two weeks. He's just so sweet. Is it normal for them to snap back so quickly? Is this a good sign that he might live a while? My vet says that he could live a few years and has even emailed me outdoor enclosures to look at. He was a stray and longs to be outside, so it would be nice for him to go outside once in a while.I really appreciate this site. Others have much more experience with these babies, but I can tell you that diet and stress control are paramount. If you can give your new guy (what's his name?) the best food possible and keep him as happy as possible, that's a great first step. You can also supplement his diet with L-lysine (from natural food stores, without the additives found in the kind you find in most drugstores, which is toxic to cats). Make sure your vet is knowledgeable on FeLV -- if he/she didn't immediately suggest euthanasia, that's a good sign. If he/she isn't, look around for one who is. Some people here like holistic vets, if there are some in your area, in addition to their regular vet. There's no way to know how long any of them will last. Some people here have kitties who have lived long and well with FeLV, and then there are some (like my Patches, who came to me as a stray, too, who only stayed with me six weeks.) What's important is to enjoy him every minute he's with you, fight the good fight together, but know when it's time to let go. Not easy, but doable. Good luck with your guy. Diane R. Re: [Felvtalk] Kiwi - feline Luk positive
Robin, what a wonderful story. All of my cats came to me much the same way you found Kiwiorphaned or abandoned...sometimes right after birth. Love him all you can and enjoy his little antics...sometimes their time is very short! Good luck! Date: Mon, 14 Jul 2008 21:48:29 -0400 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: [Felvtalk] Kiwi - feline Luk positive Last summer my son brought home a kitten who was between 2 1/2 and 3 weeks old. He found him beside his dead sibling. He was actually in good health. We bought some kitten formula and he drank like a horse. We worked on getting him use to people so that he could eventually get him into a rescue. My daughter who was living with me at the time took her cat in for his regular shots, and took kiwi with her so she could be looked at. I guess kiwi was about 3 months old then. We were very shocked when kiwi came back positive for feline luk. The doctors asked without saying the words if we wanted to put him asleep. We said no. At that point she was and kind of still is a very healthy happy one year old who loves to wrestle with our cocker and would love to play with my daughter's Japanese Bob Tail Cat, but unfortunately we have to keep them separate. The Japanese Bob Tail Cat has been immunized against Feline Luk, but we have also heard that the shot does not offer 100% protection. It's sad because they use to love to play together. We were hoping that in a few months kiwi would come back negative, but he came back positive for the second test. He still is very active, but he has been having trouble with loose bowels. He is also a bit on the thin side. I don't have the money to take him to the vets and we have tried to find him a rescue and or foster home, but right now it doesn't seem like any are available. One thing positive is that we were able to find an organization to neuter him. Now he doesn't spray. Thank God! He is funny sometimes. Some times he gets one of his claws caught in things like curtains, and cat toys. He was trying to catch a fly one day by our back patio window and his nail got caught in the curtain and he couldn't get free. He was scared and somehow got himself wrapped in the curtain. He was so grateful when I freed him. His favorite toy is a 3 inch round black rubber spider. He loves carrying it around in the house. I don't let him play with it unless someone is here with him because I worry about him swallowing it and it getting stuck in his intestines causing a blockage. He also loves laser pointers. She loves chasing the dot on the floor or wall. He loves the little jingle cat balls, or strings. One thing I don't understand is that she enjoys licking our cocker spaniels face. He is such a funny cat. Besides that he loves to check everything out. He is the curious little cat. I would enclose a picture of him but I am new to this site and I don't know if that is allowed. Well, enough for now. I would appreciate advise from anyone on raising a feline luk positive cat. Thanks! Of the 3 kittens I rescued 2, Sissy and Rocket, were FeLV+. They are about 9 months old now and are doing well. Both have test positive twice. Their sister, Daisy, had a litter before I was able to TNR her. The kittens were approx. 4 weeks old when I got them. I took them because 1 had both eyes stuck shut and 1 had 1 eye stuck shut. The next day I was finally able to trap Daisy using a kitten as bait in the carrier.Daisy has since been spayed and released. The babies have received one worm treatment, got terramycin salve in their eyes for a week, and have lysine added to their food. It appears that Mattie will be blind. She is the biggest of the 4 and very feisty. I had her tested and the vet said she was very, very, very FeLV+. No idea what 3 verys mean. CJ may have some limited vision in her bad eye. Bright Eyes and Houdini (escaped from the dog crate twice now) seem healthy. I am adding L-Lysine and Mega C Plus to their food. I am looking for advice on what else I can do to help them throw off this virus. They will each be tested when I have them spayed. Sissy and Rocket were several months old when I rescued them. Didn't know if starting treatments earlier would improve the odds that they could beat this. Any advise on how to proceed with now 5 1/2 wk old kittens would be appreciated. By the way Stormie, same colony but different Mom from Sissy, Rocket and Daisy, tested negative. I did not have Daisy tested. I knew I could not afford to keep her if she was positive and simply do not have the disposition to have a cat PTS simply because she is positive. At least she will not have any more litters. Both are currently the picture of health and tired of being quarantined in the bedroom. I have read the info on the Ally Cats web site. I agree that healthy cats should not be PTS. The Yahoo Rescue group I belong to feels that TNR kitties should not be tested as long as they are healthy when spayed/neutered. Like the military 'don't ask, don't tell' philosophy. I have a litter of kittens, now 13 weeks, who tested positive last week for FeLV. I had them in with another litter..I know this was wrong, but it was certain death for them if I did not do this..I took a chance and it was a bad one. The others have all tested negative, but will be re-tested regardless..The positive litter had 1 kitten that was negative and 4 positive. 1 also was tested negative 2 weeks ago, but passed away in the hospital from a bacterial overload. These kittens are so healthy and happy..they are the most loving bunch I have ever known. I am desperate to try and find them homes. They have been separated from the negatives and are temporarily being kept in someones spare room. This is not a permanent solution obviously. I am hoping and praying that when they are retested that they may go negative..but our vet tells us that is very unlikely and I should look for homes for them where they can be only kitties or with other FeLV + cats. We have 2 from last year that we were never able to find homes for..they became permanent fosters...this is not doable for us now as we have no foster that can keep them indefinitely. I am reaching out in hopes that some of you may be interested in adopting one of these beautiful ans healthy babies. they are fully vetted and have been altered as well. Hello Herbert...just want to welcome you...I am new, also...and learning something new every day. Thank you for your input.Debbie You gotta bloom where you're planted! From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 19:51:40 -0300Subject: [Felvtalk] FeLV therapy Hello! nice to meet you. I am from Brazil and new to this talk group. If you’re not attracted to read so much, please, just jump to essential questions at the last paragraph. I have 14 cats, four of them FeLV+, persistently viremic, according to the results of four IFA tests carried through the last 6 months. Pupa, a siamese female 8 years old is the only showing advanced symptoms of illness, having developed lymphoma (diagnosed in April, in a submandibular lymphnode). The other three positives are very well and without any complication beyond leucopenia. The FeLV+ cats have been kept isolated from the others 10 animals (which have been recurrently tested negative for the same period). I am biologist and scientific researcher in the area of taxonomy and evolution but, since the beginning of this year, into an hard attempt to digest an amount of literature on veterinary and human (cancer and AIDS, specifically) medicine, in search of some alternative solution to one given by the vets who diagnosed the problem in the colony: “We are sorry to inform, but you it will go to lose all the positives in a short period of time”. Sometimes I wonder it wasn’t better if I had overlooked those papers in the first NCBI PubMed search. Since then I am trying to understand why such promising line of research have been discontinued after the 1990’s. The subsequent articles contradicting those finds are too few and, although a randomized controlled clinical trial, reporting there is no significant statistical difference between treated and placebo groups, a large amount of the early finds were left untouched, given no alternative explanation to a number of cases reporting remission of FeLV infection and FeLV related lymphosarcoma. I had no choice, and nothing to lose, so I decided to begin a treatment from my own. I still haven’t read all the early talks in this mailing list, but I expect many of you have already realized what the matter is; indeed I believe that some have previously experienced such drama. If so, I hope you can share with me some results, conclusions or just your doubts and opinions. I’ll be very pleased in putting my preliminary impression, to plant my doubts and discuss possible outcomes. DOES ANYONE HERE HAVE TRIED A TREATMENT WITH STAPHYLOCOCCAL PROTEIN A (SPA)? I got Cole when he was 5 months old from the Humane Society and about a week after adopting him I found out he was feline leukemia positive. The Humane Society said they would take him back and give me a new kitty. By that point my heart was completely in love with him and there was no turning back, I had to meet this challenge with strength and do all I had to take care of him. Up until this point I knew that he would make it through all of the colds, pneumonia's, gastro-intestinal issues, but now I am not sure anymore. He is not acting like he would normally when he is sick..no sneezing, coughing, breathing difficulties, or diarrhea. He just lays around all the time, doesnt seem to be eating much or drinking much. I have an appointment with the vet today to get him checked out but I am scared that this will just be the beginning of the end. I am unsure of how far to let him go. Well, I guess the lord truly does giveth and taketh away in a good ways sometimes! Just as I am struggling to deal with my returned foster suffering from seziures of unknown origin and reaching the height of my stress...I also have the best news I have had in a long time. My feleuk foster Manny has a home. A lady and her 14 yo son were coming to look at him tonight at 6:00 and I had not allowed myself to get excited about it b/c I am realistic. But they knew he had feleuk and still wanted to see him (tho they have never had a feleuk- had two cats that lived to be 18-20 that died a few months ago a few mths apart). The son needed time to grieve but has recently been asking for a cat. They just want 1 so a foster friend suggested my Manny b/c I'm desperate to get him home b/c I just don't have the set up for him to have much of a life here-- running out of rooms! They have already been screened by the organization I am adopting him thru or else they wouldn't have come to the house to see him. AND they are cousins by marriage of one of my fellow foster friends! Manny is the healthiest thing ever and he's flourished in my care-- he's all muscle, not an ounce of fat, vivacious, playful, tons of fun, and a complete alpha male who rules humans and dogs-- whomever he is given the opportunity to interact with!!! He's the smartest thing in this house and that includes the dogs- of which one is very bright-- but Manny takes the cake in the brains area. I love love love him and would so keep him if I hadn't already had non-feleuk fosters and house cats and in particular kitten fosters. So I didn't get my hopes up too much when they came to see him but they asked all the right questions about feleuk and I think they feel comfortable b/c they can rely on me and my experience since we will have a very open adoption! She is a nurse so she has a great base of knowledge for understanding his disease! I just want him to have a home so I have told them that I will help personally with vet bills so that he can have his red blood cells monitored every 6 months and should he ever get sick- with the treatment. The organization I am adopting him thru (I am working with another one on the side now that I am very happy with) helps with vet bills in all cases and will assist with his should he get sick! They said they were told by another rescuer/foster in the organization that they will just know the right cat for them when they see it and they said we just know it's him! I just can't believe I got my Manny a home I have a few days to spend with him to say goodbye so I can ease myself into it-- they want to clean the house for Manny and have to get a litterbox, etc. because they threw things out. I just can't even explain to you how happy I am but I know you all share my joy! Manny finally gets a young boy to PLAY WITH, an entire house to romp in, and windows to bird watch from ALL DAY (instead of just a few hours a day)! I couldn't possibly want more for him. From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2008 11:16:42 -0400 Subject: [Felvtalk] Seizures Update Here's an update on my adopted/returned foster cat with alleged seizures: By the time his appt rolled around yesterday with the vet of my choice, I knew it was going to go well. The more people I talked to about it, the more people said there was something wrong with those people at that house and having him out of there was the most important thing. But he's just gotten better and better. I have no trouble medicating him at all. Just those first few times. He's actually one of the easiest I've ever medicated now!! I haven't had a scratch or a bite yet and it goes super fast-- he's a good boy! The odd aggressive behavior is lessened. He totally trusts me already and is a complete love-bug. He is just a quirky, willful little thing and that's just his personality-- he wants to run around and be hyper and get into everything and so sometimes when I scoop him up, he does that growling, but it's funny/harmless. Most importantly, no seizures-- no signs of seizures. I've had him since Thursday and you'd think he never left me with the way he responds to me!So the vet saw a totally healthy, friendly, bright, Curious George Cat yesterday! He just walks all over the exam room, jumps in the doctor's lap and rolls around!, purrs, tries to get into everything! It's great to watch. Dr. said we have a very healthy cat and he can't believe those people said they were going to put him down! He said this is not a cat you even consider that with! He agrees there was possible abuse. But he also suggested that-- upon watching the cat's behavior in the exam room- that he is a cat who wants to get into everything so he thinks it's very possible the cat got into something- like a chemical- and the people- since they are so weird- just didn't know and overreacted. He said that's very possible and with the way that cats metabolize things so slowly, it might just take a while for him to work it out of his system and that could be why he maybe had continuing seizures (if he even had them). He said since there's been so seizures and the cat is happy, he doesn't want to change anything. Stay on the same dose of phenobarb for 1 mth. Then he wants to see him again in a month and they will take blood and get a phenobarb level at that time. Then we will work on taking him off it slowly and monitoring the level. He said if we start taking him off and he has a seizure- then we know he was having them, but at least we know that the phenobarb will control it. But Dr. said no signs of a neurological defect-- none at all. No need to even consider a catscan b/c there's just no signs-- totally alert and bright. He said if it was FIP, there'd be other neurological signs, like ataxia. But also, I don't know if I told you that?- adoptive parents vet called on sat- and everything negative- fip, toxo, felv, fiv- neg. Dr. confirmed too that blood work looks great. Good news all around! He's a happy, healthy, bouncing boy and I'm glad to have him back in my care! Thanks for everyone's input, care and concern! I rushed him to the emergency vet and then to my regular vet Monday morning. The vet called me at 5:30 as I was driving home from work to get Duncan's food and told me that he thought Duncan was very close to dying. Test results had showed Hemobartonella and he was fading fast. We talked about possible treatments but Dr Leathers felt that it would be best, and kindest, to put him down. He deteriorated so quickly - just a couple of days ago he was eating and walking around. Unfortunately, I assumed he just wasn't 100% because of the URI. I will not make that mistake again. It was the hardest thing ever to have to make the call in putting him to sleep or not, but he has been so lethargic and down the last couple days, I had no choice. He was not in good enough shape to even attempt any other treatment at this point. I wish I would have caught this earlier and maybe treatment would have been better. He had been living with Feline Leukemia since birth and he lived to be almost 7, so at least I was blessed with that time with him. I have learned so much from you all! I found a stray 2 months ago at work who was in terrible condition, near death, starving, fleas, worms, etc. She had a 'tipped' ear and I found out later she was an Indy Feral cat who was in the TNR program. Don't know whether she was actually 'feral' though, but I doubt it because she has become quite lovable. Had her tested at a low cost clinic and was +. The vet there said her teeth didn't look so good and that was typical in feral cats. When I took her to my regular vet, he somehow neglected to even look in her mouth and he said as a + she'd live a couple months to a year, giving a very grim diagnosis. I tried not to prod at her too much at first since she was in such a delicate condition, but about a week after the vet appt, I noticed she was missing all of her tiny teeth on the top and all but one of the little ones on the bottom. I was horrified and it was then realized that my vet hadn't even looked in her mouth. After nursing her back to health, she has become very healthy except for some sneezing spells every now and then. This does worry me because sometimes mucus comes out. She had extreme uncontrollable diarrhea when I first got her, which after using fortiflora for a month 0A helped a lot, but did not cure it completely. For the last week I have been feeding her a raw chicken diet (I have been feeding my other 3 cats this diet since February with amazing results) and her diarrhea is completely gone. So she's been in my bathroom isolated from my other cats this entire time, and she really does seem to be happy there but I hate to keep them separated. I am getting ready to take her to the vet again to have her teeth checked out because her breath is really terrible (seeing a different vet there though). I am worried about stressing her out by taking her to the vet and I know they will recommend a cleaning which will probably stress her even more, but having an unhealthy mouth would be worse on her than the experience of a cleaning. Right? I have 3 other (negative) cats, 2 are adults and one is about 1 year and 5 months (I guess you'd call her an adult, she did just have her 2nd dose of the felv vax) These 2 vets say they would absolutely NOT mix. My question to all of you who mix is: Have any of your negatives become + ?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. In the case of cats, vaccine manufacturers advise against vaccinating pregnant or nursing cats. However, many pets are not healthy when vaccinated although they might not have outward signs of health problems. Charles Loops, DVM, a holistic veterinarian from Pittsboro, North Carolina, notes that chemically killed viruses or bacteria are injected directly into the blood stream, which is an unnatural route of infection. (7) This causes the animal's antibodies to attempt to fight off the offending virus molecules and render them harmless. If the animal's immune system is too weakened, he or she cannot fight off these viruses and can develop a reaction to the vaccine. Even small amounts of a virus that is introduced through a vaccination may be too much for sick animals to fight off. I just want to make sure I get as much advice as possible. My FeLv+, Bea, has had recurring gingivitis since she adopted me a year ago. Her gums get red and swollen. The anti-biotics worked but have since stopped (which has me worried on a whole other level). Other than her gum issue she is a healthy 3 year old. I took her to a dental specialist yesterday who said the best course of action at this point would be partial, possibly full extraction. He said it was stomatitis, but nothing like the pictures I've seen on it - beginning stages. I was wondering if anyone else has had either full or partial extraction done and could offer any suggestions/advice. I recently adopted 2 FeLV positive cats, Neo and Parker (1 in April and 1 in September). I knew their lives would be cut short by the illness, but wanted to give them a happy, comfortable life before they left this world. Some friends and family members have given us grief over purposely adopting these sick kitties. I've heard things to the effect of You'll be sad when they die to You're keeping a healthy cat from having a home. But I didn't (and still don't care) what the naysayers have to say. I know that I'm doing a good service to these cats that otherwise would be euthanized before they needed to be or would be without a loving home. Someone (who was in my corner) told me that she worked at a shelter once and no one would even play with the FeLV cats, let alone adopt them. This solidified my belief for the need of loving homes of these forgotten felines! Their happiness is more important than my sadness, as profound as it may be. I'm saddened to report that baby Parker (who we got more recently in September) died on November 8th. It was a sad death as he suddenly collapsed and died a couple of hours later in our home. It was late at night and the emergency vet closest to us was in surgery. Other vet services were an hour or more away. We saw him take his last few breaths and wanted to end his suffering sooner (but couldn't). But he died knowing (hopefully) that he was loved and that he didn't die alone. He was the sweetest cat ever! :(Our other cat, Neo is doing great! He's not showing any symptoms, has put on weight since we got him, and has a strong appetite! I recently read about LTIC/Imulan and told my vet about it. He didn't know too much about it as it's a newer medication, but I asked him to order some for Neo. It's quite expensive, but if I would have known about it sooner I would have tried it on little baby Parker to help him. Since Neo is quite healthy, I'm not sure what effect it will have on him, but I'd do anything to keep him as healthy as we can for as long as we can. I'd be most pleased if anyone tries this with their cat and could tell me how it works out. Also, did your cat have any symptoms before or were they asymptomatic before starting treatment? Thanks for reading and for all that you do for your beloved cats!Amber _ Proud to be a PC? Hi everyone, I'm sure by now you have heard of all the different raids of the puppy mills here in Washington. We are rank 1st in Puppy Mills as I hate to say. I've been waiting a long time for this to happen. Finally after years something has been done. I live about 4 miles from the first raid. There are 3 different people involved with this. A mother and 2 daughters possibly an aunt as well. Mind you these people live in very nice homes. So they made their money from the puppies/dogs. The first raid consisted of 155 dogs/puppies of the small breeds, 4 cats, 6 large dogs, and a few birds. City of Goldbar. Second raid consisted of over 100 dogs/puppies. City of Snohomish. Third raid had over 400 dogs/puppies, few cats, livestock and horses that were extremely underweight. City of Mount Vernon. Many of these dogs are being sheltered in the local shelters and foster homes (Everett/Mount Vernon) and the fairgrounds in Skagit County. Some have been euthanized there was nothing the Vets could do because they were beyond medical help. They are all matted and have sores all over their bodies. Many of them have defects that comes with inner breeding. Malnourished and underweight. They had to live in their own waste. I've seen some of these dogs it made me want to puke because of the smell and the sight of them. It made me so mad that I wanted to kill these breeders for allowing this to h appen to these innocent animals. Mind you this is a family ran business. Sorry, I don't have the direct links right now. If you pull up the news and newspapers for WA. it will show some of what has happened regarding these raids. Not all information will be displayed. My cats have always been together (except for Trudi, who is a lone wolf), they play, groom each other and they eat together even if they have one bowl each :-) They go out and I live in the country, so there are surely many stray cats and many owners who don't bother to test their cats! What am I supposed to do? I don't want to keep them inside because it's like a prison for them. On friday I will test the last two of them and I strongly hope they're negative, so I will continue to vaccine them and hope. My vet scared me a lot saying that FIV is very transmissible and the virus is strong and cats can catch it by grooming each other. Since I knew that it's not so, I tried to ask once again to this vet, but she keeps on saying that FIV spreads very well. I'm really surprised to hear so... I so decided to take Trudi to another vet and she immediately recognized stomatitis in her mouth (which the first one denied) and nose. She simply gave me a gel for her mouth. About the dermatitis: it can be for amoxicillin but we don't know. We decided to use, first, something against fleas and then wait and see. She said his liver enzymes are elevated and his white cell levels are high. She is going to put him on an antibiotic and re-do the tests in two weeks. Everything I read was bad. He had the first tumor removed on 10-13-08. It came back this time two tumors and they were removed on 1-6-09. This surgery was very, very difficult on him to get over. Then on 2-13-09 the vet discovered it had come back even more rapidly than the first time. x-rays showed nothing in the lungs or spleen but the liver was hard to see though not enlarged. This past Monday he stopped eating and drinking and I knew it was time. The next morning I took my heart disguised as a little 7 pound black and white angel to the vet for the final time. The night before I laid him on the bed next to me and he stared into my face purring for hours. The cancer had spread to his liver and I knew I could not stand for him be in pain. Before I took him to the vet I wrapped him in his cat blanket and walked him all over the yard so he could see his ducks and feel the air on his face. He loved to be outside. So from start to finish he lived 19 weeks from diagnosis. This is a deadly, aggressive cancer and I hope none of you experience it with your babies. I have to say that my FIV cat lived 6 years after his diagnosisand none of my other twelve indoor cats ever contracted it. Also, Spike lived a very healthy life until the last couple of days...I wouldn't trade anything for the time we had. I take care of a feral colony, also...all TNR'ed and vaccinated. Dear all, Just received this from my vet's clinic. My first instinct is no, but I would welcome your thoughts on the necessity for all-year-round Revolution? Thanks! Kerry M. Feline Heartworm Update: Dear Pet Owner, April 2009 A new study from Auburn University has indicated that heartworm disease in cats is a far bigger issue than previously thought. Cats can get heartworm infection through the simple bite of an infected mosquito. Studies have shown: Indoor cats are just as susceptible to infection when mosquitoes enter our home. Once bitten, immature heartworms are transmitted and the heartworm lifecycle begins. The larval worms then start their journey through the body, ultimately affecting the heart, blood vessels and lungs. A cat's body is designed to respond and kill foreign invaders, including heartworm larvae before they develop into adults. As the cat's body responds, the intense inflammatory reaction causes severe damage to the lung tissue. This disease state is clinically recognized as Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease or H.A.R.D. Once this damage to the lung tissue occurs, it is not reversible and there is no treatment to remove the adult heartworms from a cat. With this new information we are now recommending ALL CATS be put on Revolution year round. Revolution is a broad spectrum parasiticide that in addition to preventing heartworm also prevents intestinal parasites, ear mites and fleas. Please contact us if you would like to discuss prevention for your cat. Re: [Felvtalk] Stray
If the babies aren't crying like they are in distress, and they are moving about with a normal amount of energy, then give momma another day or socolostrum comes in prior to the milkand it is all they need until then. IF you are truly worried, you could offer them a teeny bit of KMR from a syringe...just be careful that they don't aspirate it. I am fostering a feral momma and babies right nowduring a very protracted birthing time (which finally meant a trip to an emergency vet and a shot of pitocin), I took the firstborn and gave it a supplemental nursing...just to get it settled down so momma could birth it's siblings! It sounds like you are doing an outstanding job...trust your instincts. She still wasn't doing well, just nibbling at her food and appearing very lethargic. Since I wasn't especially happy with my vet's response to her, I tried another clinic that I'd heard good things about, just to get a second opinion. Dr. Ray took more blood and told me that Charlotte was indeed very anemic - her PCV was 9% versus about 40% for a healthy young adult cat. So I was a little ticked off that my regular vet didn't tell me just how anemic she was, and a week had gone by when something else could have been done. The vet was concerned about tumors but X-rays showed nothing. He recommended that a blood transfusion be done immediately, so he packed up his 22 pound donor cat and I brought both cats to North Fulton emergency center since they were just down the road Dr Ray's office was closing for the day. I picked Charlotte up at 11:30 last night (lots of coffee was needed since it was an hour and a half drive) and she was so hungry! She started chowing down right away. And that's in addition to the $600 spent last week on Tabby's teeth cleaning, Charlotte's initial exam, testing and meds and 2 neuters. Charlotte already is more active and is walking around the turtle room. She still isn't eating as much as I'd like, but she just seems so more normal now. I told my co-workers about it today, expecting to be ridiculed, but surprisingly, everyone took me seriously. Alison told me that after her 14 year old dog died, she had the body cremated. It took 2 weeks for the ashes to come back. During that 2 weeks she both saw and heard that dog in the house. When she finally brought the ashes back to the house, she saw a plume of black smoke whoosh through the house and disappear. She never saw her dog again after that. She's a 4-year old female FeLV+. Last Thursday I went away for 5 days, leaving her home alone with a neighbor coming over for at least an hour each day to keep her company, feed wet food, brush, clean litterbox, etc. I returned from my trip yesterday and immediately knew something was wrong -- Pixie didn't come greet me and her dry food and water bowls were almost totally full (how I left them before leaving on Thursday). The neighbor said Pixie didn't eat her wet food either. She is now much skinnier around the midsection/haunches and clearly weak. Straight away I syringe-fed her a wet food water slurry before rushing over to the vet where the vet on duty found Pixie had lost over 1 lb (since she was last weighed in 2007) and said her gums and eyes looked pale. The vet suggested Pixie might have nonregenerative anemia linked to bone marrow failure. She had some blood drawn, got weighed and had temperature taken but that's it. I'm waiting to hear the blood work results tomorrow. Vet didn't even recommend how to deal with the weight loss and probable dehydration. Didn't suggest x-rays either. This woman basically shrugged when I asked about courses of treatment (like, why bother?) for a FeLV cat who might have anemia. Bottom line: I'm terrified about Pixie and don't know what to do to help her recover. She's my second cat ever, and first cat I've been primary caregiver to. I feel guilty about going away at all last week, but she had been OK on previous occasions when I travelled. I had taken him to the vet Monday and she dx anemia from the FeLV. In spite of assist feeding and B12 supplements he faded. Went downhill fast Friday and showed signs of distress Friday night. With the holiday week end I just couldn't wait any longer. CJ was one of 4 dumpster babies I rescued last summer. They were just 4 weeks old. I have since TNR'd their Momma. CJ was the loving-est little boy. He would sleep under my chin and purr me to sleep every night. No idea how I'll get to sleep tonight. Every time I sat down he was in my lap for hugs and petting. Out of all the cats I've had he was the sweetest. I know he is in a better place. It's just hard to lose any of them but even harder with the special ones. I just have Mattie, who is blind, left out of this litter. She is my adventurer. Goes where no kitty in their right mind would go. She is also FeLV+ and currently asymptomatic. Giselle, yes-when we love them so deeply, the loss is inconsolable...for a long time. It's been more than a year since I lost my Baby Ruben, and I still mourn him...but now that grief is tempered with memories of him as a teenie baby doing all sorts of silly things...and I can smile. I hope and pray your heart continues to heal and that one day you will smile again. I really, really appreciate the support and wisdom this group has provided over the last 3 years -- when strange things were happening (frothy clear vomit, a non-dilating pupil) and I didn't know what to do, and especially during the scary and sad days surrounding Pixie's death. This listserv is an example of the internet at its finest, bringing together a warm virtual community of FeLV cat guardians from across the globe. You gave me the courage to adopt FeLV+ Pixie in the first place, when I was only a foster parent to her and had no previous experience with + cats. It's been two weeks without Pixie. Grief feels like a private hell but apparently I'm going through all the normal stages. I was in bad shape when I went to pick up her ashes and the woman at the crematorium asked if Pixie had lived a long life. I could barely reply that she was still a baby when this disease snatched her. But once I got her urn home and put it on the mantle, which was one of her favorite places to perch, I felt strangely relieved: the awful business of deterioration, dying and death was over. I attached her collar tag to my keys (the jingling sound of which made Pixie come running from any corner of the house in the hope she'd get to go outside). I miss her 100 times day. I'm comforted to know that many of you have survived the loss of a beloved cat and have eventually come to love new cats. I read, and so did she, that one of the main reasons cats eat litter is because of anemia and we already know that's going on. I've lost the majority of my leuk positives over the years the same way. Either anemisa or tumors. We do full blood workups every 6 months to try to keep an eye on anemia but I've never been able to bring one back yet once the hematocrit starts dropping quickly. I expected him to live longer because I've lost most of my guys with hematocrits between 7-13 and his is 23. This guy is fading, though, and I think he's probably had enough. I'm just trying to decide if I want to do bloodwork and radiographs or if I want to just let him go peacefully without disturbing him any further. I have no doubt that the leukemia has just taken it's toll on him :( He also has Bartonella and despite numerous treatments, has not been able to shake it. We couldn't figure it out because any other cats I've treated have responded quite well. This guy's numbers actually got worse after treatment so I'm thinking his body just doesn't have the means to cope with fighting it off. Amy I would be real concerned with clumping litter if he ate any, you know what it does when it gets wet. Does the vet know about that? Re: [Felvtalk] OT- Venting
I share your frustration...I spent more than $1,000 of my own money last year trapping all of the neighborhood cats and having them desexedeven a few who's owners couldn't be bothered to do the right thing. I still have a few of the boys to do, but for now (at least) none of the females are fertile...and I will continue as quickly as possible to do the fellasit's tough, though, because my employment is kind of iffybut I have to stay focused and do what I can...and that's all I can do. I am fostering a momma (barely more than a kitten herself) that was part of a group of 25 cats dumped behind a library when their owner was evicted from her house...and of course none were spayed/neutered. I lost one of the babies within the first 24 hours...and I am amazed that this emaciated little mother is doing so well with the other three. I get so frustrated and angry that I cannot sleep at nightI don't know how you deal with such ignorance and stupidity on a daily basis Debbie (COL) Be kind, for everyone you meet is fighting a hard battle Philo Date: Tue, 23 Jun 2009 16:09:14 -0700 From: hingebacktorto...@yahoo.com To: felvtalk@felineleukemia.org Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] OT- Venting I want to vent, too! I've had a bad, bad day! I work at a county shelter and we have just about had it with people. A woman called today and told me that she was getting ready to call Channel 2 news about us, because we were so very rude. Why was she ticked off? Because she surrendered her dog 2 weeks ago - she and her husband couldn't tolerate the dog's destructive behavior - and we were not doing enough to get her dog adopted. U..you weren't willing to spend any time and effort whatsoever on your dog, so why would anyone else? They decided to just reclaim the dog today, since they didn't want her to be euthanized. My colleague who handled the reclaim very nicely questioned the husband about his plans for the dog. Would they work with her, train her, try to find her another home? After all, we didn't want the dog to be reclaimed only to be dumped on us again. Not exactly fair to the dog, is it? The husband said he was ready to start cursing out my coworker, and apparently a nasty email is in the works. And someone else dumped his dog because she had a hot spot, and he didn't want to pay a vet, and when we told him that we had a low-cost vet we could refer him to, the excuse was, She's too wild around the kids. We try to help them, and they counter with another BS excuse. I'm sick of it! And you guys will love this one. Last week a woman surrendered 5 kittens. It seems that THREE of her cats had litters of 7 at the same time, and she needs to round up all the kittens and bring them to us, because, of course, they all roam around outside! She then proceeded to blame the neighborhood tomcats for knocking up her females, when naturally it's her irresponsibility that got her into this mess. They are planning to bring us nearly 30 cats in all. We had to euthanize FIFTY cats and kittens last week, and just as many this week, and STILL people refuse to spay/neuter or keep their animals confined when they're in heat. This has to stop. It just has to stop. ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org _ Invite your mail contacts to join your friends list with Windows Live Spaces. Even though blind since birth she was the most inquisitive kitten I've ever had. No challenge was too great for her. She is the last of a litter of 4 positive babies I rescued last summer. What amazes me is that their mom and 3 aunts, all positives and now spayed, are still doing fine. All I can say is Mattie had a wonderful 12 months wanting for nothing and teaching me so much. She, however, cannot keep me because her family suffers from asthma. Also, she is a college student and does not have the money to properly care for me. This is why I need your help to get to Second Chance Meow (a home based sanctuary in Reno, Nevada). We all know that cats like me are hard to place in homes and usually end up in sanctuaries or shelters. I'm happy to be going to a loving and caring home where the people there know about this disease and can properly care for me. The fundraiser that was set up for me will end in 6 days. Re: [Felvtalk] TNR Feral Colonies
I do TNR also...and I have to agree with Sharyl...this money is coming out of my own pockets...I cannot afford to spay/neuter/vaccinate...but I do. These cats will be returned to their colony as long as their health is good...I wish I could afford every test and every preventative vaccine, but I am doing the best I can with what I earn. I haven't had any kittens to worry about in the past two years, so I feel fortunate. I'm on the Feral Cat group. Most TNR is done by individuals or small groups. TNR = Trap, Neuter, Release Since the plan is to release the cat back to its original colony/location, very few folks test for FIV or FeLV. To be frank they can't afford the test and the results would not change the outcome. _ Drag n’ drop—Get easy photo sharing with Windows Live™ Photos. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowslive/products/photos.aspx ___ Felvtalk mailing list Felvtalk@felineleukemia.org http://felineleukemia.org/mailman/listinfo/felvtalk_felineleukemia.org
