Hi Ken,
I'm not sure what Che uses, but I am using Visual Studio Express 2008
without any Jaws or Window Eyes scripts and it works fairly well out of
the box without scripts provided you turn off a few things that give
Jaws and Window Eyes headaches. As far as were to get it I have the
complete Visual Studio dvd image on my web site at

http://developers.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/
and yes it is free.

Hi Bryan,
My advice is don't sweat it. Yes, math is an important part of
programming but not so vital you can not do any constructive programming
without math skills. The rule of thumb is this. The more math you know
the more complex the program you can create. Plus you are forgetting
here there are other developers out there who can help you with the math
problems when you need it. For example, on the developers list Ryan
Smith was having sometroubles understanding how to calculate and use
distance and direction formulas. Since it is fairly easy trig for me I
helped him out and now he knows a lotmore in that area than he did know
before asking. Since Ryan is very young he never had basic high school
Trig, Geometry, etc but he manages to get by with writing some games
despite that.

Bryan Peterson wrote:
The main thing that's holding me back from trying programming is my
abysmal math skills, because I've certainly got the time on my hands. Of
corse I've always had problems in that area so it's ot surprising that
the idea of programming seems dawnting to me. Sad, really, since I'd
love to put out some games. I'd love to see an audio game in the style
of Pirates! if anyone on list remembers that game. Then again maybe when
I move up to Seattle, as I most likely will and possibly before the end
of this year, I may try again to at least take some basic programming
courses and see what develops from there.

Hi William,
You start by beginning to learn the language basics, and then branch out
into specific types of programs. Since I know you are a big Mac user I
can say right off Visual Basic .NET might not be what you personally
want. Yes, it is popular among blind programmers because it is easy, but
if you want to target the Mac directly something like the Mac version of
C-Sharp with SDLDotNet would be more suited to your interests. That is if
you wanted to write games for your Mac rather than running Windows all
the time to play games. As someone who is looking to buy a Mac this
summer of course I am trying to gather support for more Mac developers.

Re: [Audyssey] potential programmers, was : idea fora new game

2009-02-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi William,
As far as the C-Sharp language goes two books I highly recommend is
Programming C# 4th eddition and Learning C# 3.0 by Jesse Liberty. If you
have a Bookshare account you can obtain them through Bookshare.org in
daisy format, or you can visit my favorite programming educational site

http://safari.orelly.com
and get a subscription to all there books in accessible format.
While the books themselves are geared for a Windows developer using
Visual C# what you learn is pretty much the same as what you would be
doing on the Mac with mono. As faras the Mac CSharp IDE, Monodevelop,
I'm not sure were access is with that right now. I know the Linux
version of Monodevelop rocks with speech, but I've heard Monodevelop for
Mac is less accessible. Although, there is a work around. If you don't
want to fight with Monodevelop you can code your source in the Mac text
editor, and compile from the terminal window by running the mcs compiler
directly. One thing to keep in mind when using the Mac for C-Sharp
programs you need to run the program by opening a terminal window and
doing something like mono mota.exe to start a game like Mysteries of the
Ancients or create a program launcher that does that for you.

 HTH.

That's not an issue you're seeing mike, it's that the rooms are dark.
if you light one of the enchanted torches objects like that become
visible so you get clues as to where they are. Assuming Tom doesn't
go overboard on torches, this is gonna be a frustrating and very
welcome way of doing things in my book, because it might mean doubling
back on yourself and having to remember the way you've come to go back
and check for items you need if you've run out of torches.

This is cool. I don't dig side scrollers at all, but this is s
cool. Played it right through a few times now, and it's still cool.

may not be so challenging but i shall reserve judgement on that

That's not an issue you're seeing mike, it's that the rooms are dark.
if you light one of the enchanted torches objects like that become
visible so you get clues as to where they are. Assuming Tom doesn't
go overboard on torches, this is gonna be a frustrating and very
welcome way of doing things in my book, because it might mean doubling
back on yourself and having to remember the way you've come to go back
and check for items you need if you've run out of torches.

This is cool. I don't dig side scrollers at all, but this is s
cool. Played it right through a few times now, and it's still cool.

I think what's confusing people is that you have to select the torch and
then light it by using the space bar. Thanks to a hint from Charles, I just
figured that out. Things are working much better now. I prefer that method
of using torches to having them automatically light. However, there should
perhaps be more of an indicator that one is in a dark place. Perhaps, a
spooky undertone or something of that sort would work there. It should be
recogniseable as a darkness indicator without overpowering what you could
still hear around you.

This is going to be a stupendously excellent game when Tom gets it all

[Audyssey] issue with speech in mota

2009-02-24 Thread alex wallis

hi.
OK, I do like the mota demo.
However I have found a few things that I don't like about this game.
first and biggest thing I really don't like
Is the games speech can't be interrupted.
the time when this gets extremely annoying is say if I am in a really big
room with a lot of objects, and I am climbing a rope to try to find the
ledge.
now of course I have to use the view command to get an idea of where I am in
relation to the ledge. but every time I press v I have to listen to the hole
list of everything in the room and where it is in relation to me. not only
that but while speech is playing I can't move to go up or down the rope. and
if I am on a rope and some way above or below the ledge, I have to listen to
the same list of objects 4 or 5 times.
to my mind this is a serious floor. the issue with not being able to
interrupt the speech or move while its being sounded might mean I didn't buy
the game unless it was changed. as I am finding it intensely irritating.

My other question also relates to the speech in the game. Why exactly are
you recording wav files with everything the speech needs to say? when it is
easy to make sapi on the computer output what needs to be read out.
having the wav files like this means a user is forced to work with a
particular voice that they might not like. plus all these files massively
increases the size of the installer.

The other issue I have noticed is there doesn't seem to be any sound or
feature that indicates when you can open fire on an enemy, because of this I
have wasted a lot of ammo. or is this because I am not picking up on a
feature of the game?
I no this sounds like I am just bashing the game, but I don't mean to. I do
like the game and I think it is quite good for a side scroller.

Hi Michael,
NO that isn't a bug. Hint if you light one of your torches items will
play sounds and will be announced when you press the v key. Otherwise
the room is dark and you can't see them. This is fully documented in the
User's Guide. Guess you hadn't thought of the obvious.

still can find it by accident and pick it up. When you light a torch you
will be able to find items quicker because Angela can see them. Grin.

Hi,
Not sure what to say about that, but best advice for anyone getting
confused is to read the User's Guide such as it is right now. That is
why the documentation is there. At any rate almost all of the rooms are
dark except for the ones that have torches in them.

Smile.

Michael Feir wrote:
I think what's confusing people is that you have to select the torch and
then light it by using the space bar. Thanks to a hint from Charles, I
just figured that out. Things are working much better now. I prefer that
method of using torches to having them automatically light. However,
there should perhaps be more of an indicator that one is in a dark
place. Perhaps, a spooky undertone or something of that sort would work
there. It should be recogniseable as a darkness indicator without
overpowering what you could still hear around you.

2009-02-24 Thread Valiant8086
Hi.
I just went in to look at sounds and found there is no way out of that menu
without finding the go back option. Escape or left arrow won't work. It'd be
great if we could get a keystroke to back out.

Hi Allen,
Yes. Install the .NET Framework updates for Windows and then install the
DirectX updates. Otherwise Managed DirectX won't get installed or
upgraded which is majorly not good.

Re: [Audyssey] issue with speech in mota

2009-02-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Alex,

Alex Asked:
first and biggest thing I really don't like
Is the games speech can't be interrupted.

Tom Says:
Yeah, I can see how that can get annoying. However, there really is no
help for that seeing as I am using wav files for speech instead of some
text to speech out put like Sapi. Figuring out a way to interrupt the
speech is on or list of things to do before final release, but not sure
how successful that will be since doing so may cause other side issues
with speech along the way. All I can say is give us time to look into
this issue since this is after all only a beta.

Alex Says:
now of course I have to use the view command to get an idea of where I
am in relation

to the ledge.

Tom Says:
Keep in mind here that you are a totally new player. Once you get
practice with the game you won't always have to look for that ledge. You
will figure out eventually that going to say 38 10 or 38 11 and jumping
from there will take you directly to the ledge. Also the ledges drip and
the statue makes its chanting noise. Both are great sound cues as where
to the ledge is in relation to you. My point being is that the view
command becomes less and less important as you learn the game.

Alex Says:
not only that but while speech is
playing I can't move to go up or down the rope.

Tom Says:
Yeah, we have a fairly good idea why that is happening, and we are
attempting to fix that issue by placing speech output into its own
thread rather than speaking on the main thread. This is a rather
involved update so it has been scheduled for some as yet unknown date to
be done. Hopefully it will get done before Beta 2 comes out.

Alex Asks:
My other question also relates to the speech in the game. Why exactly
are you recording
wav files with everything the speech needs to say? when it is easy to
make sapi

on the computer output what needs to be read out.

Tomb Says:
Several reasons. First of all, the new Genesis Engine, which MOTA uses,
is being designed to target multiple operating systems such as Linux,
Windows, and Mac OS. With that in mind Microsoft Sapi support simply
does not exist outside of the Windows environment so I have to use
something a lot more generic. Second of all, in our experience including
Sapi support in a game can be more trouble than it is worth. When we
were using Sapi in the Montezuma's Return test builds several people had
screwed up Sapi installations which we ended up trying to resolve to get
our games to work on those test machines. Since Sapi is technically not
one of our products we do not feel we should have to fix a product that
isn't even ours just because Microsoft can't get their act together and
make Sapi stable. Finally, we can pick the voice we want players to use.
We know not everyone can afford high quality voices so we include them
with our games. This improves the quality of the game and over all
enjoyment for most players.

Alex Asks:
The other issue I have noticed is there doesn't seem to be any sound or
 feature
that indicates when you can open fire on an enemy, because of this I
have wasted
a lot of ammo. or is this because I am not picking up on a feature of
the game?

Tom Says:
We did not include a targeting sound because we did not feel it was
necessary to do so. We felt it was rather obvious if an enemy was
playing on the left that turning left and shooting would be very
straight forward and obvious. However, if this becomes an issue and a
request to add one we certainly can.

HTH.

Re: [Audyssey] Tomb Hunter Beta 1 released!

2009-02-24 Thread Valiant8086
Hi.
I've found all of the menus to be the same, you can't press escape or anything
to back out of them. And when you ask it to quit game you can't get it to just
assume yes if you type y or no if you type n.

Also, could you turn off music in the main menu and the sounds menu if I have
turned it off in settings, or maybe just while in the describe sounds menu. I
can't hear the sounds in the menu over the music. Or, maybe you could fade the
music completely out, describe the sound, play it, fade the music back in, like
light tech interactive does with at least one of it's games.

Ok last thing, I can't seem to climb the swinging rope in the second room. I
have done it before but started new games and such and it will say swinging
rope above and . 0 meters. I press eh eltter i or the up arrow and it won't
climb up the rope. What am I missing?

  Cheers:
  Aaron

2009-02-24 Thread Constantine
Rare? no way! WHat's rare is a sega cd - but that still only sets you back
around 55 dollars. What the kicker is is the 3do, which can range from 40
dollars (not trusted, it probably doesn't work) to 70 dollars - new ones can
be in the 300 dollar range. THe imports from Japan especially, which weren't
released in america, go high - like the sanyo. I might just scrap the 3do
all together - actually, I found a dreamcast on ebay for 18 dollars. It'd
probably work - they don't go much cheaper than that, though...

Simple answer: Google.
Complicated answer: BUy a dreamcast, as the emulator for it is hard to
use - you have to be running some of the high end stuff on your computer.
Its so complicated to emulate any system starting with the 128 bit -
that's why I don't even try for anything from the dreamcast and up.
You can get a dreamcast for 40 bucks - that's cheaper than a new 360 or
ps3 game..

Quite a good write up for sure. I've not played much console games

secondly no

however

I know a lot of people have MK already, and are probably going to get
SFIV
as well. But for all those seriously debating between the two...
here's my

two-sense.

I've played both games... up to the most modern ones. After having a
bit

of
a threat on gamefaqs all about it, I figured I'd give my opinions to
the

vi
community as well.

I've borrowed a copy of MK versus DCU from a friend of mine, and have
been

playing it for a while now. As an honest MK and street fighter fan, I
confess myself to being more on the street fighter side of things. One
quote
I know from the thread I mentioned is, MK has always been more about
style

Re: [Audyssey] mota demo

2009-02-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi James,

James Said:
I haven't tried the beta yet, but on the torches:
I personally think having torches automatically light is helpful in
several ways; since they cannot be used at your disgression their
placement is a clue to the location of a dark area. You can be pretty
sure that it's close to where you got the torch.

Tom Says:
Well, back when this game was Montezuma's Return we got lots of
complaints about torches automatically lighting so we made them a manual
light. In this matter it is a lose lose situation. Someones bound to
complain no matter which way we go with it, and that is just how it is
going to be.
As for using torches the entire level is considered to be dark with a
few exceptions such as a room with a fire pit, torch, or some other
object that would naturally give off light. This isn't exactly that hard
to figure out, and isn't rocket science. You are in a dark underground
temple and need light constantly to get around.

James Said:
Speaking of items,
I'm not sure I like the idea of hitting enter near an item to pick it
up. From the demos and trailers (as well as past iterations of the
game) it doesn't seem like you'd ever want to skip or avoid an object.
It sounds to me like lots more complexity has been added to the
game, which in the end doesn't achieve anything but a multitude of
additional keypresses.

Tom Says:
Lots of time and effort has been put into adding complexity to the game
which may be more interesting to some and more frustrating to others. We
can't please everyone and we just have to play this one by ear. As far
as using enter to pick up items that is what all the Tomb Raider games
do, and since this is a spin off of the Tomb Raider series we like to
keep that similar feel and keyboard layout if possible.Besides it is
just way to easy if Angela picks up anything near by just by walking
over it. you need to actually find it with a lit torch and reach out and
pick it up.

HTH.

Hi Michael,
NO that isn't a bug. Hint if you light one of your torches items will play
sounds and will be announced when you press the v key. Otherwise the room
is dark and you can't see them. This is fully documented in the User's
Guide. Guess you hadn't thought of the obvious.

[Audyssey] Installing DirectX was Tomb Hunter Beta 1

2009-02-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Greg and all,
When you download the DirectX update it will first ask you for the name
of a temp directory to unpack files. Note, it is not asking for an
installation directory, but mearly a place to unzip the files to. Then,
you have to open that directory and run dxsetup.exe to start the
installation. I would like to note that the .NET Framework must be
present on your system before running the DirectX setup because if it
isn't not all the DirectX components will get installed. It just so
happens those are the ones we really need.

HTH.

Hi,
If you are dying when trying to jump a chasm my guess is you are trying
to do so with a heavy weapon drawn. First holster it and then try to
jump, and see if you do better. FYI, you might want to read section 5 of
the User's Guide as jumping is discussed more in detail there.

Hi Thomas,
I am really enjoying the beta.
I do have a few questions and suggestions about torches.
When you start the game you should have a torch burning.
When you pick up a torch in your inventory is should be out and hitting
enter would light it.

Do torches have a time limit?
If they do the w key should say torch burning.
If and when the torch goes out it should make a fizzle sound and w would say
torch burnt out.

Good job!

Hi James,

Hi Will,
Not C++ (C Plus Plus) but C# (C-Sharp). Anyway, most of the exampls in

encounter is Mono's Cocoa accessibility interface for VoiceOver and Mac
OS isn't as well developed as mono's GTK interface for Orca users on

I haven't had the problem with wasting ammo, seems to be that when I walk
into a room the thing is generally close enough to shoot with something,
even the shotgun. There is a bug I've noticed though that seems to be
random, ocasionally the ledge in the first level is a phantom ledge and you
just end up back at the bottom of the rope. Its random for some reason
though, so if you restart the game it'll have a chance to actually let you
land on the ledge again.

I too have had the program stop responding when using the view command. It
usually happens when its trying to detect certain things. In the first room,
for example. If you're standing near the rope, when it tries to tell you
where the stone statue is, it either foregoes direction entirely and just
tells you the distance, or makes the program stop responding for a few
seconds.

hi.
I figured out how to reproduce the minimize issue when you press v. You have to
alt+tab out, and then back in, close the inventory menu, then press v. it'll go
out with the sounds and the screen reader will come back to life for a few
seconds, then you'll return to the game again. press v again and it'll behave
properly. Altt+tab back out and back in and press v again and again the game
seems to minimize..

I haven't had the problem with wasting ammo, seems to be that when I walk

even the shotgun. There is a bug I've noticed though that seems to be
random, ocasionally the ledge in the first level is a phantom ledge and you

   hi.
OK when I use the view command in mota quite a lot of the time, the sounds
stop playing in the game for several seconds as if the window loses focus
   then they come back.

also, with regards to targeting, I have found quite a lot of the time that
its hard to judge when you can open fire with say the pistol. as you get
the message that there is something nasty near you, but when you go to
fire at it you find your too far away from it. so frequently I have to
waste 2 or 3 shots before I can hit whatever it is. this is even when the
thing pops up in the direction I am traveling say I am moving right and
the thing is on my right.

Re: [Audyssey] mota demo

2009-02-24 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Thomas,
I am assuming that at the start of the game you have just entered a dark
room and would have a lit torch in your hand.
I imagined that the torches left behind in the tomb would make a smoldering
sound as if they were short of oxygen and when you light them they could
burst into fire.

This could be done using the same torch sound by increasing the pitch.

I also have a suggestion about the rope sound.
A swinging rope should slow down if a person was climbing it.
This could be done by lowering the pitch of the rope sound.
I love the reaction words to creatures!
and everything else sounds great!

Hi Phil,

Phil Said:
When you start the game you should have a torch burning.

Tom Asks:
Why? There is one right there not more than three feet away from you.
You can easily grab that one light it, and continue on your way. Just
feels a little like overkill to me to have a torch burning when you start.

Phil Said:
When you pick up a torch in your inventory is should be out and hitting
 enter would
light it.

Tom Says:
I am assuming here you mean when you select it from the inventory list?
I suppose we could do that, but I had reasons for not doing it that way.
For example, suppose you have a torch when crossing the flooded room.
You wouldn't want it to go out when coming in contact with the water. In
that case you might want to keep it ready, but not light it until you
climb out onto the far bank.At wich point start up the torch.

Phil Asked:
Do torches have a time limit?

Tom Says:
Yes, they do. Depending on your experience level the time limit will be
longer or shorter.

Phil Said:
If they do the w key should say torch burning.

Tom Says:
Ok...Well, it does say torch when you are holding one, but I didn't see
any need to add if it is burning or not, but I suppose I can.

Phil Said:
If and when the torch goes out it should make a fizzle sound and w would
say torch
burnt out.

Tom Says:
Torches do fizzle when they burn out or come into contact with water.
Smile.

2009-02-24 Thread Shadow Dragon
Just out of curiosity, are you supposed to be able to crouch and shoot at

having to crouch attacks, then rise and shoot. Would make the cyclopse

instead of just ducking and blowing his legs out from under him.

I figured out how to reproduce the minimize issue when you press v. You
have to alt+tab out, and then back in, close the inventory menu, then press v.
it'll go out with the sounds and the screen reader will come back to life for a
few seconds, then you'll return to the game again. press v again and it'll
behave properly. Altt+tab back out and back in and press v again and again the
game seems to minimize..

Re: [Audyssey] issue when using the view command in mota

2009-02-24 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Technically, i am running Windows 7 beta now on one machine and Windows
Vista on another, but I have confirmed CPU isn't the issue. The problem
is DirectX doesn't release the tab key when Windows wants it when
switching Windows so there is a conflict with that key. The easiest and
most practical solution is to asign the inventory command to something
else like escape and put quit on q. That is likely how i will end up
solving this problem in the patch I am working on right now. If you have
a desired key suggestion for inventory let me know and I'll consider it.

Shadow Dragon wrote:

running vista though, but since I seem to recall you run vista as well,
I doubt that's it either.

Phil Said:
I imagined that the torches left behind in the tomb would make a

as if they were short of oxygen and when you light them they could
burst into fire.

This could be done using the same torch sound by increasing the pitch.

Tom Says:
Hmmm...I'll keep those suggestions in mind.

Phil Said:
A swinging rope should slow down if a person was climbing it.
This could be done by lowering the pitch of the rope sound.

Tom Says:
Yeah, makes sense. I'll look into it.

 Hi,
No it is not a Phantom ledge, but if you don't hold the keys down long
enough Angela will fall short of the ledge and fall back to the floor.
If you aren't high enough to reach the ledge the same will happen. It
is tricky and all I can say is it takes practice to get it right.

seems to be random, ocasionally the ledge in the first level is a
phantom ledge and you just end up back at the bottom of the rope. Its
random for some reason though, so if you restart the game it'll have
a chance to actually let you land on the ledge again.

Re: [Audyssey] Mota Question

2009-02-24 Thread Shadow Dragon
Sure you can crouch and shoot in real life, but personally I think it makes
the game too easy. Nothing can touch you, and if you're out of range you
don't even have to rise, you can just keep holding the down arrow and make
little hops forward via jump till you're in range. I just went through
expert not losing any health, accept for the tiny bit I rose from a crouch
just to see how far a skeleton could attack from since I wasn't hitting with
my pistol. Or it didn't sound like it anyway. Think I was though. Also, you
can rapid fire jump through levels as well, so unless enemies stop you from
moving altegother, its possible you could just jump everything and complete
the level without touching a single enemy. Traps might be a bit tricky, but
just throwing it out there.

Actually, your suggestion works tom, you just have to hold the jump key down
longer and it doesn't hurt to be a little higher than the ledge. I was only
having trouble because I didn't know you could hold the jump key down for a
slightly longer jump. Then again I didn't exactly read over the docs

 Hi,
No it is not a Phantom ledge, but if you don't hold the keys down long
enough Angela will fall short of the ledge and fall back to the floor.

[Audyssey] about torches - Re: mota demo

2009-02-24 Thread Charles Rivard
This brings up a thought about torches: Could a feature be incorporated
into the game that allows the torch to be blown out, the remainder of the
torch being saved for later? It could be useful, but how realistic would it
be? The cool thing about this feature would be that it is up to your
judgment as to whether you want to do it, as it may fizzle out when you
could really use it, and it might be your only torch. Now, it has fizzled,
and you're S! O! L!!

Hi James,

James Said:
I haven't tried the beta yet, but on the torches:
I personally think having torches automatically light is helpful in
several ways; since they cannot be used at your disgression their
placement is a clue to the location of a dark area. You can be pretty
sure that it's close to where you got the torch.

Tom Says:
Well, back when this game was Montezuma's Return we got lots of complaints
about torches automatically lighting so we made them a manual light. In this
matter it is a lose lose situation. Someones bound to complain no matter which
way we go with it, and that is just how it is going to be.
As for using torches the entire level is considered to be dark with a few
exceptions such as a room with a fire pit, torch, or some other object that
would naturally give off light. This isn't exactly that hard to figure out,
and isn't rocket science. You are in a dark underground temple and need light
constantly to get around.

Tom Says:
Lots of time and effort has been put into adding complexity to the game which
may be more interesting to some and more frustrating to others. We can't
please everyone and we just have to play this one by ear. As far as using
enter to pick up items that is what all the Tomb Raider games do, and since
this is a spin off of the Tomb Raider series we like to keep that similar feel
and keyboard layout if possible.Besides it is just way to easy if Angela picks
up anything near by just by walking over it. you need to actually find it with
a lit torch and reach out and pick it up.

into the game that allows the torch to be blown out, the remainder of the
torch being saved for later? It could be useful, but how realistic would
it

be? The cool thing about this feature would be that it is up to your
judgment as to whether you want to do it, as it may fizzle out when you
could really use it, and it might be your only torch. Now, it has
fizzled,

and you're S! O! L!!
