Too bad that the letter was put out as it was not what it pretended to be.
Interesting that in an interview his commander said that while he had not
written that one, it was certainly what he would have said had he written
the letter. Somehow the message got a lot less press than did the
messenger. I will concede a strategy win to the folks who made a combat
wounded vet look less patriotic that a NG pilot whose commander did have
those words to say about him.
But I am one of those who was happier with the semi-ban on political
comments on this list.

Not sure what Cheney was doing - but given his current health he may have

Re: [MBZ] question for haley and all the anti government nut jobs

2008-04-16 Thread Bill R
Given the different alphabets used [which tend to change over the centuries]
that number [and there is some question as to 666 being the number intended
- and you certainly can't look it up in English and be sure] can be used to
refer to almost anyone. Using the Hebrew alphabet from before or after the
insertion of vowels, for instance, or using the Latin alphabet, or Greek
will give different results. Nero was the most likely candidate at the
time. You can be sure that anyone who suggests it refers to anyone today
started out with that person in mind then figured a way to use the alphabet
they needed to make it add up. They will pretend they are doing exegesis
[reading out of the text], but in fact are doing isogesis [reading a desired
meaning into the text]. We can be sure that someone writing when those
passages were written was not referring to implanted chips or to a position
that did not then exist. It had to make sense at the time or it would not
have been written or passed on. Somehow I doubt we want to get into that
sort of discussion here, though. Entertaining, but even further OT than
guns or politics.

Re: [MBZ] question for haley and all the anti government nut jobs

2008-04-16 Thread Bill R
If one is inclined toward Hebrew numerology 3 = a perfect number including
the heavens, earth, and the regions below the earth; 4 = the four corners of
[or all] the earth, so 7 = perfect completeness [4+3]. 6 is short of
perfection [much like a 6 foot plank to cross a 7 foot gap]. 3 6's is a
fullness of imperfection. As usual, interpretations depend greatly on the
time period one is talking about as such understandings did change over the
years. The numerology of the 666 would be Greek [they actually used the
letters of the alphabet as numbers at one point [alpha = 1, beta = 2 gamma =
3, etc], though the number of letters in their alphabet did change over the
years]. I don't think it at all possible to put every possibility out on
the table and chose which one is 'correct'. We have to do the same thing in
all instances when doing this sort of thing, which is to start with the
answer we want then chose the method that fits the desired result. Like I
said, entertaining, but only of use to support a preconceived answer. It
also doesn't take much to get me started on such topics. I'll quit. Again.

As a self described liberal who supports a flat tax, you need to look at it
more closely. There is a rebate of the tax for the $$ amount of the federal
poverty level. If you make no more than that [and hence spend no more than
that] you really are not paying any tax as the tax on necessities has
already been given to you and everyone else [a prebate, if you want to use
the term]. Tax is collected only on final consumer sales, so personal,
corporate and business to business sales are tax free. No more IRS, no more
inheritance tax, no more tax of any kind except for a tax on a sale to the
consumer. Buy a lot, you pay a lot of tax; buy a little, you pay little
tax. I suspect many of our corporations who have moved offshore would
return, and there would be no advantage to setting up an account offshore as
there is no tax here. No tax loopholes, no tax shelters. I am sure there
would be some problems with it, but compared to what we have now it should
be less.

Re: [MBZ] OT: McCain proposes break in fuel taxes

2008-04-19 Thread Bill R
Tom, I don't think you have the whole picture on why we have so many Indian
physicians in the US. No doubt some might come for primarily financial
reasons, but the other quite important factor has to do with the desire to
be more than a family physician. The bulk of the population might never
see a physician in their life, or it would be at best a very rare occasion.
India does have a wealthy class who can afford and avail themselves of such
services, but the main need for most of the country is basic medical care.
For the government to support training of village health workers would be $$
far better spent. It would not make sense to invest in the specialized
education for a specialist that few would ever see. I am sure finance does
play a role, but so does the desire to be better trained and to become a
better physician. A relatively wealthy population who demand and can pay
for advanced services is a necessity for those wanting more $ but also for
those not satisfied to do mostly 'entry level' care.
Another perspective.

[MBZ] Two questions, at least - 1981 300SD injector pump and temp fluctuations

2008-04-21 Thread Bill R
Hopefully someone can offer some suggestions here. I have two issues that
are giving me problems:

1. The temp gauge usually holds at 100 or a degree or two above or
below. It has started to register hot for a time every few miles, starting
in the last few months. I have had the thermostat replaced, radiator
flushed and the temp sensor replaced [old one was a bit corroded], and this
morning when it jumped up to 120 I headed back to the shop and a temperature
sensor showed nothing on the engine or cooling system over 180 while the
gauge was at 119. Sometimes it jumps [like an air bubble] and sometimes it
climbs and goes back down slowly. Tomorrow the cluster will be pulled and
the resistance on the wire checked, as well as the vacuum lines. Any other
thoughts ?

2. My injection pump has been making noise [much louder in the car
than outside, but a stethoscope on the pump found the noise was within]. I
got a rebuilt pump and had it installed - but the mechanic doing the install
really doesn't have any history on those things. While there are always 3
or 4 MB's in the lot it turns out I am one of only two diesels they take
care of. When I picked it up it was already running, and smoking more than
before, though most of the noise was gone - or at least quieter and
different. When I started it the next morning it was making a fair amount
of noise and putting lots of smoke. It lessened when it got warmed, and by
the time I have driven it a few miles the noise is pretty much gone [you can
still hear it a little bit over the engine noise], the smoke lessens, but is
still much more than it has ever been, and the power seems lessened. At
this point if I want to get moving in a normal fashion I need to turn off
the AC, but it still does not seem as peppy. I know I am not accelerating
as hard as usual because I am sure something is wrong somewhere, but it
still seems a tad anemic. I also assume that those clouds of black smoke
the tend to surround my at stop lights is fuel that is not being burned as
it should. At $4.199 / gallon I don't like that.

I did get my 250k kilometer badge over the weekend - they do look nice.
Wonder if I should buy the $2,200 MB watch from the catalogue to go with it
. Is there a 'normal' spot to mount this? At the moment it is angled
behind the rear speaker to push up against the rear glass while I decide if
I want to put it on the front grill.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions. I'll take them down to the shop in
the morning.

Bill,

Probably a corroded connection. Start by unplugging the connector at the
driver's side of the cylinder head, and watch the gauge. There are two
senders
in the 2-3 cylinder area of the head i believe. Push the connector on and
off a few times and see if the temperature reading becomes more accurate.

A little known connection on the back of the glow plug relay is next. The
wiring harness for the temperature sender is the same one that contains the

wiring for the glow plugs. So the glow plug relay becomes a connection
point
for your sender. Same drill--unplug it and replug it a few times to remove

the tarnish on the contacts that Mercedes silver is famous for. Do not
sand
the contacts!

If these two points have not fixed the problem, NOW you can pay someone to
remove the instrument cluster, which also has a circular push on connector
on
the back.

I bet it is the one on the GP relay, since you recently changed the sensor.

You changed the correct sensor--right?

Yes, we used a laser temp sensor. It showed there were no problems with the
actual temp of the engine, just the gauge.

Bill,

I had a temp problem on my 500E.. Do you have a laser
Thermometer...?? I merely had a problem with the connection at the
gauge. It was loose. Tightened! No more temp problem...

Check the coolant lines and engine with a laser thermometer... Even
cheap ones work pretty good.

Hope this helps..

2008-04-22 Thread Bill R
Thanks for the additional info. If you have the timing information handy I
will pass it on to the shop. It would seem that whatever information they
used didn't work. I have to start with the belief that the rebuilders did
the job correctly, and that sitting on a shelf a few years' didn't hurt
anything either [it had been tested by the rebuilder so it should have been
lubricated, and was sealed]. I suspect the mechanic just wasn't familiar
with the procedure.

I am to the point of thinking it is a connection problem or a faulty gauge.

Bill,

Probably already answered (I on digest and catching up) but here are my
thoughts:

1)You probably have an air bubble, and if your thermometer does not
agree with the gauge, your gauge may be off. Air Bubble: park car
facing up hill on slight incline with heater controls on full heat (or
put front axles up on jack stands), drain off a gallon or so and pour
back into the block via the top radiator hose. Pour until coolant is
about to run back out, re-connect hose and put remainder into expansion
tank or radiator. You may have to squeeze the upper hose to 'burb' as
much air as possible out as adding those last few pints. Keep squeezing
until you can't get any more air bubbles into expansion tank/radiator.

2)Sounds like pump timing is off and maybe the linkage is not
adjusted correctly. Let us know if you need the instructions for timing
the pump.

Very respectfully,
/s/

Hopefully someone can offer some suggestions here. I have two issues
that
are giving me problems:

1. The temp gauge usually holds at 100 or a degree or two above or
below. It has started to register hot for a time every few miles,
starting in the last few months. I have had the thermostat replaced,
radiator flushed and the temp sensor replaced [old one was a bit
corroded], and this morning when it jumped up to 120 I headed back to

[like an air bubble] and sometimes it climbs and goes back down slowly.

checked, as well as the vacuum lines. Any other thoughts ?

2. My injection pump has been making noise [much louder in the car
than outside, but a stethoscope on the pump found the noise was within].
I got a rebuilt pump and had it installed - but the mechanic doing the
install really doesn't have any history on those things. While there
are always 3 or 4 MB's in the lot it turns out I am one of only two
diesels they take
care of. When I picked it up it was already running, and smoking more
than
before, though most of the noise was gone - or at least quieter and
different. When I started it the next morning it was making a fair
amount of noise and putting lots of smoke. It lessened when it got
warmed, and by the time I have driven it a few miles the noise is pretty
much gone [you can still hear it a little bit over the engine noise],
the smoke lessens, but is still much more than it has ever been, and the
power seems lessened. At this point if I want to get moving in a normal
fashion I need to turn off the AC, but it still does not seem as peppy.
I know I am not accelerating as hard as usual because I am sure
something is wrong somewhere, but it still seems a tad anemic. I also
assume that those clouds of black smoke the tend to surround my at stop
lights is fuel that is not being burned as it should. At $4.199 /
gallon I don't like that.

I did get my 250k kilometer badge over the weekend - they do look nice.

I know it is only Thursday but there is not much traffic on the list. Here I
sit in my office bored and looking for
distraction.

Miserable day here in the great white north as it is once again white. Snowed
during the night and shifted to some
freezing rain this morning so not a very nice spring day.

Filled my truck this morning and I believe this is the first time I have been
able to put more than $100 in the
tank. $106 plus cents this morning. Do you think the tank is stretching? I'm
sure it did not hold that much when I
bought it a couple of years back.

Time to get the diesel out of the garage. Diesel is slightly more expensive
than regular gas right now. $1.224 for
regular and $1.259 for diesel. Before you run up here to fill, remember that I
am referring to liters rather than
gallons.

Re: [MBZ] Ghost stories

2008-04-25 Thread Bill R
My personal experiences are not quite as dramatic, but my father
spoke of being on guard duty during the Battle of the Bulge [Germany,
WWII, for you young folks]. He said his mother came to see him and spoke to
him about 20 minutes. He was not at all surprised when he later got word
that she had died that night. My Sister's Father-in-law lived with them for
the last few years of his life. One morning when my sister went into his
room to make sure he was ok he told her that her daddy had come to visit him
the night before. He had stayed about 20 - 30 minutes sitting in a chair in
the room, and told him that his family was waiting to see him, and
everything would be alright. Out dad had been dead for a few years then,
and her father-in-law died that night. My personal experiences relate to
foreknowledge with both my [then] future wife and other instances, but are
not quite so dramatic.
As for how one can speak of these things, the only philosophy that
includes such a possibility as part of carefully reasoned thought is that of
Alfred North Whitehead. If you are so inclined much of the basis can be
found if Process and Reality. Plan on reading it several times before it
begins to make sense.

[MBZ] The saga of the injection pump

2008-04-25 Thread Bill R
The saga of my injection pump has come to a happy conclusion.

When I picked it up the first time it was smoking and still had a rattle [it
was the rattle that had me take it in in the first place]. I took it back
on Tuesday and they went into it once more, finally determining that the
pump, while adjusted according to the directions they had, was not adjusted
correctly. Mechanic took the pump back off and compared it to the pump that
came out of the car, determining that the two were not set the same, nor
were they the same pump. That covered Tuesday afternoon and part of Wed.
Finally my nephew called the MB dealer and was assured that the new pump was
the correct one for the engine, but that the one that came off was not. It
seems that when Potomac German sent the engine [they never did tell me from
what year 300SD, despite many promises to do so] the pretend mechanics who
had my car in Vero Beach pulled everything off the old engine and installed
it on the new. Somehow they almost got it to work [though my nephew had to
do a few hundred $$ work rerouting and reinstalling items]. Thus it stayed
with a worsening shifting problem. I later replaced the tranny and the
vacuum pump, and finally the injection pump. After my nephew called a
friend at another shop [very familiar with that injection process] they
straightened out the calibration and the timing process got started all over
again. I think the full job entailed three removals and installations of
the injection pump, and I think possibly one of the vacuum pump, and several
attempts to time and calibrate it. What had not been clear in the
directions was that with a pump that had a lock installed at a rebuild you
set the timing to 15 degrees, instead of the 34 degree setting without the
lock [or the other way around]. Big difference. It turns out that the
previous incorrect pump had been timed and calibrated close enough to almost
stop the smoking, but it also threw off the vacuum to the transmission.
Long story short [sort of], half of Tues, Wed, Thurs and half of Friday
later it is running beautifully, shifting better than it has since I have
had it], and no smoke. I am happy.

When I pulled out the checkbook for all the stuff done beyond the initial
install I was told there was no charge, as it was under their [three month?]
warranty. I tried to pay for some of the mechanic's time so he would not be
out half a week's work, and was told that it was for situations like this
that they kept the mechanic who worked on my car as a salaried employee [The
other guy is hourly]. They wouldn't take any $ for the mechanic [who it
turns out wasn't out anything] or for their extra work, and my car runs much
better than it did before. I am confirmed in my belief that having a
mechanic you can trust is a very nice thing. Now I await the first fill-up
[hopefully at less than $100] to see if the mileage has improved also -
though it got as high as 27 mpg before, so probably not.

When I pulled out the checkbook for all the stuff done beyond the initial
install I was told there was no charge, as it was under their [three
 month?]
warranty. I tried to pay for some of the mechanic's time so he would not
 be
out half a week's work, and was told that it was for situations like this
that they kept the mechanic who worked on my car as a salaried employee
 [The
other guy is hourly]. They wouldn't take any $ for the mechanic [who it
turns out wasn't out anything] or for their extra work, and my car runs
 much
better than it did before. I am confirmed in my belief that having a
mechanic you can trust is a very nice thing. Now I await the first
 fill-up
[hopefully at less than $100] to see if the mileage has improved also -
though it got as high as 27 mpg before, so probably not.

[MBZ] Still happy with my 300SD, but ...

2008-04-30 Thread Bill R
I am still most pleased with my SD with the new [rebuilt] injection pump.
The shifting is way better and the smoking has stopped and the things starts
most easily. One oddity I have noticed is that at normal in town highway
speeds [ mid 40's] I can here a faint ticking from somewhere under the hood.
It does not seem to be there at idle, and not being able to run beside the
car to check I thought I might ask the experts. My first guess would have
to be something in the injection pump as nothing else on the car has been
changed. Any thoughts? Other than that faint tick, I have heard the
rattle of an injection pump with what I think is a messed up vacuum
connection once or twice, and for some reason it started to idle at about
7500 RPM rather than its usual 6500. That only went on for a short time,
but it was noticeable. Turning off the AC had no effect.

Thanks for all who help us non-mechanical types.

Yes, for both front and rear glass replacement. It was ok, but I didn't
discover until several months later that the rear defogger only worked over
about half the window. It is unusual for us to have a need for such things
and I didn't know of any reason to test it at the time. Not a huge problem
and it was installed on a rebuilt rear deck [rust killed the area below the
rear window and I had it all cut out and rebuilt]. Basically a good
experience - until I discovered the defogger was not fully operational.

The Thermomix cooks by oneself...prepares dishes, also time-consuming,

brilliant. By using the Varoma you cook vitamin-protecting, healthy and

[MBZ] Quirky thermometer readings

2008-05-04 Thread Bill R
I have been having erratic temp readings and have tried several things
suggested to cure. Last week my aux fan would not turn off, so after a few
hours I took the car to the shop. My nephew opened the fuse box and tapped
on a relay and the fan shut off and the temps have registered where
expected - at least most of the time. A laser digital thermometer showed
that when the gauge said 120 no part of the engine or cooling system was
above 180F, so the problem seems to be with resistance somewhere. Manfred
is planning a visit to Jax and we'll check things out.

I did have an unusual end of the week with it, though. After the three day
event to get the injection pump straightened out, which resulted in a great
improvement in the shifting and almost complete stopping of the smoke, a
wonderful drive for a few days. On Thursday it started shifting hard,
idling fast [but 750 - 800 RPM and not 7500RPM], and if the AC was on I had
to get out and push to get it going. It did that until Saturday morning,
when it reverted back to a perfect lady. Great shifts, able to keep up with
traffic leaving stop lights even with the AC, and just a really nice ride.
Elves, Dwarves, or whatever. I'll still take it in for a once over, but I
really don't want anything different than this - except for it not to do
that again. My Darling wife and I are planning a 5 day Memorial weekend and
I don't need something like that.

Does that sort of thing ring any bells?

For the intermittent power loss I would check the pressure line that goes from
the back of the intake manifold to the ALDA on top of the IP. I haven't
followed your great IP saga, so forgive me if you've already done that.

Another thing you might want to check is the wastegate hose (depending on your
turbo it may/may not have one. It should be pretty easy to see if it does. It
is on the front of the turbo and goes down to the bottom underneath the
compressor housing.

Regardless... it sounds like you aren't getting boost all the time or the IP
isn't seeing that you have boost (much more likely).

HTH!

Re: [MBZ] OT, IE problems continued - backup system

2008-05-05 Thread Bill R
As a testament to what Don said, a few years ago I asked a friend who worked
at Publix [major Florida based grocery chain] about the new building going
up a the back of an area near where he worked. He said an internal study
showed that a computer system failure would most likely cause the company
and it's hundreds of stores to end up bankrupt. They were constructing a
fully redundant system in a separate location. The more you need a computer
system the more you need good protection and backup.

Re: [MBZ] Feeling blue over trying to be green

2008-05-05 Thread Bill R
Tom, you hit on 'the dark side' of much of the recycle and green movement.
My first real kick in the seat on this came from an engineer friend who had
to deal with land use issues. His comment was that prior to the recycle
push when you put stuff into a landfill most of it stayed there. After so
many items started to be made biodegradable suddenly runoff became a major
problem as these items don't necessarily breakdown into pleasant stuff for
drinking water. I don't suppose we who drive ancient MB's need to be talked
at too much about the problem of a 'throw away society', but it does need to
be preached loud and long.

Yep, the truth is coming out. Bio Diesel is causing a serious third world
food shortage.

Wait till they figure out the real impact that Ethanol production has on the
world. We are already experiencing record food inflation, partly due to
higher oil prices but more directly related to the fact that so much corn is
going to Ethanol!

Then there's the long term impact of compact florescent bulbs. Every one
contains a bit of mercury. I don't know about you but I throw mine out when
they burn out and I bet that 99% of the county does the same. So, do mercury
tainted landfills appeal to you?

Linux gurus and others,

Here is the show-stopper that I see for MY situation. Review: plan is to
purchase cheap laptop for use while I travel. Mostly personal stuff (set up
Skype or some other webcam/audio method of communicating with home front
while I'm gone, peruse MB stuff, read up on survival skills, etc.) but, and
here's the big but, I'd also like to be able to access some military sites
so that I can do official work if needed.

So, we are now delving into the security realm. Worse yet, DOD security
realm. I am just savy enough to know where the boundaries are that when
crossed, the Internet Police come to my cube and ask what I'm doing and who
am I and please show some ID and follow us (that has only happened once so
far. Embarrasing!).

So, can I make Linux work with Active Card Gold or Active Client? Please
contact me offline if anyone has been down this path. Secure communication
paths are available to me. I've tried to make Mozilla Firefox work for
these military sites on my XP machine, can't do it and haven't found anyone
that knows (but I haven't really tried very hard).

OK, maybe this isn't a show-stopper, but would be nice to figure it out and
be able to do more things with future laptop...

Thanks,
Max

daughter to use. Do the electric ones do an adequate job? I hated the cord

I bought a 110v trimmer largely because unless you use a gas trimmer a lot
(or maintain it very well) it'll be hard to start.
The electric trimmer is a breeze to use, didn't cost much ($30 maybe) and
does the job. It won't cut brush like a good gas trimmer will but is
entirely adequate to trim around the house.

I have a Black Decker 18v cordless trimmer, and a BD cordless
hedge clipper that uses the same batteries. Both work great. If you
get both tools, you get two chargers and 4 batteries, which allows
you to pre-charge enough to keep you going for a good long while--
I've never needed to use more than 2 batteries in a session, but you
may use all 4. Both tools are lighter than gas counterparts, and no

Subject: [MBZ] My $500 Kaleb Car let me down

I went out to start my $500 Buick Lesabre this morning and it wouldn't
start. It would click once, but not start. I think it's the starter. It
could also be the battery cable. These cars have a problem with a spacer in
the cable that corrodes. I was dressed in my suit because I had to meet a
client for her deposition this morning. So, I had to get my wife out to
help me try to start it while whacking the starter with a hammer while
laying on the drive in my suit and tie. And of course, it didn't work. So,
we had to push it out of the way, in order to get my wife's car out of the
garage, so I could drive it. Crazy morning. I am rushing to my office and
my client is trying to reach me, I am driving too fast and trying to answer
my cell phone, I ran a red light by mistake (luckily no one around) and when
I finally get to work, my client is calling because they cannot come to the
deposition because the Joint Commission on Accredidation of Hospitals is
there for their SURPRISE inspection. It is once every three years and it
was today without any notice. What a morning.

[MBZ] Lunch at Singleton's

All of you who wished you could have made it to lunch at Singleton's today
certainly would have enjoyed it - and Rusty even bought the meal, a nice

Replacement of rear rotors requires a special Rolls Royce hub tool
($1,000 if you can find one for sale, or rentable from the RROC) and
takes two days of labor.

Does that mean I can't just get a big mallet and beat on them until they
come loose?

Some think Anchor Steam is something special. Personally, I don't.
Here are a few others which are also exceptional:

St. Feuillien Abbey Ale (Belgian Special Blond Ale)

Leffe Blonde Abbey Ale

Clovis Special Belgian Ale

Barber Belgian Honey Ale

Blanche De Bruxelles (Belgian White Ale)

Pax Belgian White Ale (Limburgs Wit)

If Michael Jackson (The one who actually made a positive societal mark in

For those fortunate enough to be in their distribution area, Sprecher Micro

Well, if one seeks a role model through a name, you could do worse. From
experience with my grandkids though, as soon as someone picks up an unusual
name you will suddenly hear dozens of kids with the same name. IE - Our 1 YO
granddaughter Isabella - it seems to be a common girl's name these days. I
never knew anyone [outside of Spanish history] who had that name but I have
run across several in the last year. Who knew. I think the jury might
still be out on Atticus, though.

[MBZ] Thought I was in a different car...

2008-05-13 Thread Bill R
Manfred - That rearrangement of the throttle rods you did yesterday was
nothing short of amazing. I started out onto the road this morning and had
to stop and walk around the car to see if it was mine. At least twice the
pep it has had - probably since I got the car. A real pleasure to drive
once more after months of problems with the injection pump and tranny.
Still has some odd shift patterns [that 1-2-4-3-4 thing], but hopefully
Herndon's can adjust that properly.

Thanks loads - BillR

Re: [MBZ] OT Beer and Bugs and fun difficult activities to try in the m when we were young...

2008-05-13 Thread Bill R
I did have a bug in the late 1970's. It was orange and was on the street
when a rather destructive [golf ball sized hail] hailstorm came through
Western Indiana. That VW looked like a golf ball when it was done. I did
enjoy driving it, but having been married a few years at that point it was
much more appealing to just go home than to get frisky in that. The
hailstorm hit at around 10:00PM the day the crop insurance stopped at
midnight. The corn fields were yellow with corn, but the farmers were a lot
happier than they would have been had it hit a couple of hours later. It
also put 853 holes in the beautiful stained glass windows of our church and
broke lots of windows in the town in our area. It took two weeks to get an
appointment to get an estimate on car repairs.

Re: [MBZ] Thought I was in a different car...

2008-05-14 Thread Bill R
Two of the rods that work to move all the throttle stuff [like my technical
terms?] had been swapped at some point in the past. Manfred fiddled with
trying to get the snag out of the linkage movement while having the stop
lever be in the correct position, and finally discovered that to get that to
happen the rods needed to be swapped. On my car it was the one going down
near the stop lever and the one going directly across the top, I think
attached to the same piece. Amazing difference. What can I say, it's a
gift. I'm sure if you dropped by his place [worth it to watch progress on
his dome home] he would take a look for you. Let's see: 2,970.5 miles each
way [according to MS Streets and Trips], so rounding up just a bit for going
around pot holes and such make it 6k miles and about 2 weeks driving time
each way, If you don't eat or sleep you can make the trip in even less time
for about $1,ooo. Good luck. Probably should call him first to make sure
he would be home.

noticed the walnut top gets dinged fast in my pocket with other keys and
stuff, but I enjoyed making it and knowing that I can.

No, that couldn't be as the whole metal part was gone - just had plastic
left over.
Looked in the house at lunch to no avail.
However, found it in the trunk lock so now back to square one. Time to
make some wooden key heads to replace the
 plastic.

This morning I got into my car in the garage and went to put the key in
the
ignition switch. No key! Just the
plastic piece left. Got to love those silly soft plastic key tops. Started
to make a wooden blank replacement a
while back but never finished. I guess now I will be making 2 - assuming I
find the other key. Think it must be
close by as I have not driven the car since Sunday evening - rained here
the
past 2 days so I drove the Supercrew
and left the MB in the garage. Hope the metal part of the key is in one of
my pockets somewhere in the house - or
maybe on the floor in the car somewhere.

Would it be easier to fix on a unibody car?
We had a frame crack repaired on the GMC farm truck not all that long ago.
They boxed that section of the frame, maybe 1 foot around the crack.

Re: [MBZ] [Banned] NOT what I wanted to hear - Update

2008-05-15 Thread Bill R
Update. I went over to see they guy this morning and he put it up on the
rack for me. He had driven the car and looked things over, noticing a
number of fuel and vacuum irregularities, but heard the creaking and
addressed none of them. He will not do work on a car with a cracked frame
rail. His guess is a wreck at some point in the car's past, which I am sure
is correct as the RF quarter panel is a slightly different color. The
cracks are where the spring and the dampening piston/stabilizer [?] connect
to the frame. In his opinion the car is not safe to drive and that needs to
be fixed before he would address other issues. There is an automotive
welding shop here in Jax that I will take it to when I can. No idea of how
expensive that will be, but I have an unbelievable amount invested in the
replacement engine, rebuilt transmission, new AC, new vacuum pump, new air
flow actuators and a few other things, and the interior and exterior are
both nice. I suspect it would have to be on the high side of $1000 for me
to flinch too much. Lots cheaper than any other car I would like as much.
I'll update you guys [and the occasional gal] as I learn more.

Newer Mercedes bodies frames are made of high strength steel alloy. An
incompetent welder can actually do more harm than good by tempering
weakening the frame around the weld. This is why the Mercedes guy believes
the only safe repair is to replace the frame rail.

[MBZ] update on the cracked frame rail

2008-05-15 Thread Bill R
When I went to get the car, necessitating signing a statement to the effect
that I was informed that the car was not safe to drive, the wife of the
owner [who does the front desk work] seemed surprised that I was going to
investigate having it fixed and not scrap it. I took it to the welders, and
felt for a moment like I had tossed a live chicken into a pool of gators.
They drove it up on a rack over an open bay and 4 welders descended
[literally, they had to walk down stairs] on the RF tire area with someone
checking it from every angle. I had talked with the owner about the issue
of high strength and some poor welding in the past, and the critical nature
of this for it to be my 'forever' car. A few minutes later the had
determined that they could indeed repair the cracks. It would take about an
hour from getting the undercoating off and getting it cleaned up. Estimated
cost about $55 - $60. A far cry from the top I would have been willing to
pay. Hopefully a good outcome, but I'll be watching that spot for a few
years. I rest easier tonight, and tomorrow I will try to figure out
transportation to get it back to the MB shop to have the numerous fuel and
vacuum issues addressed. Manfred made a huge difference with the sharp eye
on the throttle linkages.

Hi Bill,
I know the weld should be as strong as the base metal but I wonder if
the addition of a piece of flat steel could be bolted over the cracked area?

That would take any stress off the weld - but may be totally un-necessary.
;-) Just becomes an issue of what you;re comfortable with.

felt for a moment like I had tossed a live chicken into a pool of gators.
They drove it up on a rack over an open bay and 4 welders descended
[literally, they had to walk down stairs] on the RF tire area with someone
checking it from every angle. I had talked with the owner about the
 issue
of high strength and some poor welding in the past, and the critical
 nature
of this for it to be my 'forever' car. A few minutes later the had
determined that they could indeed repair the cracks. It would take about
 an
hour from getting the undercoating off and getting it cleaned up.
 Estimated
cost about $55 - $60.
Manfred made a huge difference with the sharp
 eye
 on the throttle linkages.

[MBZ] Picked up my car - cracked frame rail repaired

2008-05-16 Thread Bill R
Talked to the guys at the welding shop, and we are pretty sure the problem
was caused by an accident at some time in the past. They said under normal
driving I should not have any problems with it. It drives well, and next
week we stat with all the other stuff that needs adjusting.

[MBZ] OT rotisserie question

2008-05-16 Thread Bill R
Tried out my new [to me] grill tonight, and tried the rotisserie for the
first time in my life. Pretty basic stuff, I stuck two chickens on the
spit, put some BBQ rub on them and cranked it up. I was also dealing with
some grandkids at the time, and when I thought it was stable at 450 degrees
I wandered off for a time. When I got back a few minutes later it as at 550
and the chicken skin was black. Tasted good [burn was only of the skin],
but not visually appealing, to say the least. It's a 4 burner Jenn-Air,
64,000 BTU. Anyone have a good method for using a rotisserie? It did not
come with a manual.

Re: [MBZ] OT rotisserie question

2008-05-16 Thread Bill R
I wondered about that but caught someone's post that the high heat [though
not to 550] for 45 min was the method used in commercial units. Chicken was
tender, though at 45 minutes the inside 1/4 was a touch pink.

You're better off with a lower heat and a longer cooking. Rotisserie
is the best for chicken!

And give the skin a few pokes with a fork to make some dribble holes
for the juices!
