Re: Apple Watch Ultra, who has one and would you buy it again?

2023-09-18 Thread Barry Abbott
I purchased the Apple ultra watch last year and really like it. I like the fact that it has a bigger screen I can hear it better and I found it to actually wear it for a while. I don’t even really notice much of a difference in terms of weight on my wrist. It’s just there and the battery life is great because I can usually wear it for two days before I have to charge the battery And I do like the action button as well. Sent from Barry Abbott’s iPhoneOn Sep 17, 2023, at 3:08 AM, Sieghard Weitzel wrote:

Thanks Matt, a little more space for gestures and all that is something I thought might be nice as well. I also assume that even if it may feel a bit big and thick in the beginning, you probably get used to it aftrer a few days.

I bought one at the end of May and really like the battery life and the action button. I started out with a 45 mm watch a few years ago, but my last couple have been 41 mm and switching to the ultra feels significantly larger than either
of those. For one, the watch is much thicker.

I traded watches with someone for about a week, so they could try out the ultra, and I didn’t depreciate their watches battery life, but the size was a nice change, felt much less obtrusive.

With all that said, I don’t think I’m going back, for no other reason than the battery life. The larger screen makes the keyboard and other controls much easier to interact with. Sent from my iPhone

Subject more or less says it. We are considering upgrading from our Apple Watch series 5 to the series 9 and I do like the idea of the features and battery life of the Ultra, but not sure if I would like the size.
Anybody who bought the Apple Watch Ultra last year, do you regret getting such a large watch?
Ultimately it comes down to putting one on my wrist which unfortunately isn't so easy because the nearest Apple Store to where we live is about 700 miles away in Vancouver. There are a couple of stores who sell the Apple Watch here mostly
in connection with a carrier plan, but none of these stores stocks an Ultra. But Facebook to the rescue, I just posted on one of our local "Ask a question" type groups if anybody here had one and would be willing to let me put it on my wrist and I received
 an answer within 15 minutes.
Of course it helps also that we live in a town with a population of 5000 where if you live in town nothing is far away, then there is the fact that I have had my retail business on Main Street for 23 years and that I am the only blind guy
with a guide dog in town and just everybody at least knows me by sight if not by name. Anyways, one of my customers will stop by tomorrow to show me his, but still I am curious what other Voiceover users have to say about especially if you may have had a regular
Apple Watch before and upgraded to an Ultra last year.

Take care,

Correction to my app switcher issue

2022-10-14 Thread Barry Abbott
What I meant to say, was using the mail example what I would first here is the
word mail and then I would swipe right and I hear mail active and I have to go
there in order to close the app. I am using the iPhone 13 Pro.

Strange issue with my app switcher

2022-10-14 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello, all I noticed that when I open the app switcher there seems to be two
occurrences of the app. For example, if I had just mail open, I would hear the
word mail and then if I swipe to the right, it would say mail button and then I
can flick up and close it if I do not swipe to the second Word I can’t close
it. I wonder if anyone else is having this issue? I’m not sure if I phrased it
very well, but it seems bizarre to me.

Re: Why don’t messages delete everywhere if you delete them on the watch or on the phone?

2022-06-14 Thread Barry Abbott
A cautionary note.

It is working but I seem to have retrieved an an awful lot of messages. When I
first started it it said the messages would be safe forever until you delete
them. Once I started deleting them it gave me the message that it would be
deleted from all devices. So it may be a bit of a headache at first but once I
get rid of the messages hopefully I won’t be able to delete them as they come
through. Hope this helps.

I found out how to turn on iCloud Sync ifromthe iMore web site. Essentially
what you have to do first is turn on apple two factor authentication and then
once you have that done you go into your Apple ID again, then iCloud and check
the apps which are turned on or off. In my case my messages app was off even

I checked my Apple Watch settings and I have messages set to mirror my iPhone.
This would lead me to believe that when you delete a message from your iPhone

some reason I could not see the messages app.

Hello Richard. Place your finger at the very bottom of the screen and slide up
until you hear 3 ascending tones which will open the App Switcher. Sliding up
from the bottom with two tones is equivalent to the home key

Starting at the top of the screen and sliding down to tones will give you the
Control Centre. Sliding down from the top of the screen for 3 tones will give
you the notification Centre.

 Alan,

I gather you can do the gesture to unlock the phone.

Instead of lifting your finger when you do to unlock it, keep slccding until
you get about to the level of the power switch and lift and you should have the

Hi Esther,

I'm not a fan of the default gesture to go home and to the app switcher on
iPhones without a home button. I'm often not hearing the opening blip when
starting the single finger slide from the bottom of the screen. I use the App
switcher constantly so I went to Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Commands,
All commands and customized the four finger tap to open the App switcher. This
just works much faster and consistently for me than the default gesture.

Re: Reading with the Kindle App

2020-10-26 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello all. What I have found occasionally is that some books that are purchased
from Kendall are restricted in terms of accessibility to the text. Although I
have not had this happen on my iPhone, I have had it happen on my Kindle fire.

I actually returned the book and said that it was not accessible. I later got
the book on audible. I do not remember what the name of the book wise but it
was a biography about the actor who played Sulu in the original Star Trek
series and it was an excellent book.

RE: How much is Amazon pime video in Canada

2019-02-19 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Jen. According to something I found on the web It's $79 .00 CAD annually.
Once your 30 day trial is over your card is charged. You will automatically be
charged from then on until you discontinue it.

I like it because of the free shipping But I think that the free shipping
doesn't always apply when receiving products from third parties through amazon.

I also like the Prime Videos there is a lot of stuff free to watch if you have
a prime membership.
I am disappointed though because as a blind person I cannot get the Audio
Description to work in Canada. I called about the problem and got the helpdesk
in the US and she was able to get it from her end. I have never ben able to
turn it on after following the explicit instructions.

I definitely do not regret getting it.

Hi I’m living in Canada and thinking of subscribing to Amazon Prime Video.
How much is this a month and can you subscribe just to the video service and if
so how do you do this. I do not have any idea so any help would be welcome.

In Jonathan’s last book he talked about Face Recognition and the jestures used
with the iPhone X. In a podcast I seem to remember him mentioning that he would
be inserting this information again especially because the new offerings all

Hello folks,

This is a question for the tech savvy iPhone users. What are the advantages of
buying iPhone XS over iPhone XR for a totally blind user? Clearly iPhone XS
has 3D touch and the XR does not. The XS has dual camera, and the XR has a
single camera, and the display is different. How important these differences
in practical terms to justify spending 250 dollars more on the XS if you are a
totally blind person?

Cheers,

Re: Bi14 experiences?

2018-08-12 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Mary. I just received the BI14 this week. I have a first generation focus 40
and a Braille Sense 40 display which was my wife's. I decided to keep the
Braille Sense as I like keeping : fidential information on it. It has some note
taking capability and works very well with the computer.

I wanted a small display that I could use with my iPhone and my two Apple
TVGGS). I could not see myself doing any extensive reading on the 14 cell
display. But I do like the portability and the joystick when using it with the
iPhone and Apple TV(S) around the house. I also like being able to connect it
to several devices at once.

My focus 40 was recently cleaned however some of the cells are still not
working correctly and I am not willing to put any money into fixing it as I
already have the Braille Sense.

One thing I notice with the Bi14 is that if you type very fast you sometimes
get a different letter. When I typed the letters p and e in the word "type"
they came that as the letter quite. I have found this to be the case on other
displays as well.

Hello Mary. What you have to do first is one if using Gmail for example go into
your google Account and make sure that notes is turned on.

Two on your BIA 14 when you’re in your notes application make sure that you are
in the Gmail folder when you write the note.

Then if you want to force a sink press space with S. Otherwise your note should
link up the next time you turn the device on.

The manual did not point out that you are supposed to ensure that the notes are
turned on within your account.

I hope this helps.

Hi all. I really appreciate the responses. I guess we know that currently the
audio description is not available in Canada. Obviously the next step is to
contact Amazon and see how we can persuade them to make it available in this
country as well.

Take care. Barry

Can't Activate Amazon Prime Audio Description in Canada

2018-08-07 Thread Barry Abbott
I have an Amazon Prime Subscription here in Nova Scotia Canada. I cannot get
the Audio Description to work. I have contacted Amazon Support. They cannot
tell me whether or not it is available in Canada. I have followed the steps
correctly but do not see an option for turning on the Audio Description.

I have tried it on my iPhone 7, my Apple TV 4th generation and within the
Prime Video App on my Sony Smart TV — all with no success. I have tried it with
Boch which does have Audio Dscription.

Have any other Canadians tried it and succeeded?

Thanks.

Yes Chef not working correctly

2017-05-14 Thread Barry Abbott
I'm wondering if anyone has been experiencing the following issues with the Yes
Chef App.
Examples:

1. My verbal command:  "Chef — What Can I Say?" Yes Cheff responds "I Didn't
get that." "I heard, 'What can I say'?"
"Looking for something? Try saying "Chef Followed was search recipe name or
incredients."
2. My Verbal Command "Search for chocolate cake Recipe."
Responce "I didn't get that. I heard 'search for chocolate cake recipe.'
"Looking for something? Try saying "Chef Followed was search recipe name or
incredients."

If you dictate into the search field using the regular dictation or type in
what you want E.G. Chocolate Cake." It brings up results.
I am running the latest version of iOS on an iPhone 7. My wife uses an iPhone
5S. She sent an email to the developer supp...@conversantlabs.com and the email
was rejected. "Mailbox not available."

Any information or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Kim. Apparently the BrailleNote Touch is getting an update. Hims has a

According to a Blind Bargains podcast the Orbit Reader 20 is shipming to

When is the next National GTT phone in session?

Have a great day.

Hello all. I have my trexe connected to both my iPhone and my Apple Watch. To
turn on multipoint access I think that you hold in the power button and the
button on the left side at the same time. Aftershokz will say “multipoint
access on”. I found this out purely by accident just trying out different

I find that the Watch does not seem to be all that loud.

I haven’t found an accessible user guide. I just downloaded the regular PDF.

Re: Tiles and tile app? Not!

2017-02-04 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello all. I purchased some Tiles from Amazon in November after hearing a
Podcast by David Woodbridge. He demonstrated how to use the app in a round
about way. He too had been speaking to a Tile representative according to the
podcast regarding accessibility.

The iOS app is dreadful but it does work much better on Android as demonstrated
by David Woodbridge. We also have it on my wife’s Samsung Tablet.
Unfortunately,it cannot be installed on the BrailleNote Touch because you need
version 5 or greater of the android platform and the touch runs 4.2.

I use the Tile app on the Apple watch and this seems to work quite well for me.

Re: apple watch questions

2017-01-04 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Stephanie. David Woodbridge has made numerous podcasts about the Apple
Watch. These can be found either at Applevis.com <http://applevis.com/>. Or his
own iSee podcasts. That would be a good starting point as he offers excellent
demonstrations of various aspects of the watch.

Mystic Access also has a tutorial you can purchase.

Re: A Neato Question.

2016-09-04 Thread Barry Abbott
I have to say that we are very pleased with how well Neato picks up the dog
hair. I have a German Shepherd and even with regular brushing he sheds. Not to
mention our two cats.

It is very easy to clean compared to the Roomba. But the big deal of course is
that it can be controlled via iPhone or Android- not sure about android
accessibility as I haven’t played with it much.

When we purchased it several months ago it was available for $850.00 CAD at
Bath and Beyond.

One thing I have found is that sometimes after having corrected an error I
can’t seem to get it going again by pressing the home key. I then have to do a
reset by holding down the home button for 15 seconds. The problem with that is
that you are back at the start of the cleaning cycle.

Another small issue is that our bathroom has about a 3/4 inch lip which Neato
can climb but in doing so the little side brush often comes off.

However, I am very pleased with the overall performance and ease of
maintenance of the Neato.

Re: Hey Siri irritation I hope they fix

2016-06-17 Thread Barry Abbott
I have found that even if I have the business in my contacts SIRI will still
respond in that way.

I say: “Call Yellow Cab” and SIRI responds “I found a Yellow cab on Gladstone
Street is that the one you want?”

Even worse if I say “Call Caseno Taxi” also in my contacts
SIRI will often respond “I found “Caseno Nova Scotia on Barrington Street . .
.” - Totally unrelated to my request.

It would seem as if there may be a different search algorithm which basis
responses on paying customers.

I have noticed this since iOS 8. It is so inefficient now. If you ask it to
call a friend or family member in your contacts it works fine. Otherwise I now
say “dial” and give it the number of the taxi company I want.

SIRI asking too many questions when calling with an iPhone

2015-11-28 Thread Barry Abbott
Wondering if anyone has a solution

Request to SIRI: "Call Caseno Taxi"
Response: "I found a Caseno Taxi on Nova Lee Drive - is that the one you want?"

I have this company in my contacts and as a favourite. When calling from my
Apple watch under friends it does what I ask

I find this process to be very frustrating. I can understand this being useful
when wanting to call something or someone who is not in your contacts
Is there any way to change it so that it works like it did under iOS 7.
I find it most inefficient. Why didn't they just leave well enough alone.

Thanks in advance.

Whole Lot of Shakin' not going on!

2015-11-23 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi all. I'm wondering if any of you have been having issues when shaking your
iPhones with iOS 9.1.
In a number of games, Audio Defender, Sixth Sense and other apps the shake
feature does not work. Also when I am told to stand and turn in a circle by
audio defender nothing changes - the voice just stays where it is located in my
headset when I start.

I took my iPhone 6 to the Apple Store and they are telling me that nothing is
wrong with the sensors.

For example, when the Sixth sense tutorial tells me to shake the phone to
launch a grenade at an oncoming animal nothing happens

Nor does it work in Blind Square either.

I have the shake feature turned on in Blind Square. I've never found a place to
turn it on or off in the settings. It has to be a hardware issue. One day I was
hanging my jacket on the back of a chair and the iPhone took quite a whack
striking a wall close to the chair. I explained this when at the Apple store. I
also have Apple Care so I am covered in case of accident. I can't understand
how the diagnostics would show that the sensors are all fine. I asked the
technician to test the shake feature and he says it works find.

any ideas or suggestions before I tackle the Apple Store again?

Thanking you all in advance.

Barry

Re: Netatmo users: hold off updating to the latest version

2015-11-09 Thread Barry Abbott
I noticed in the last update of Netatmo that some of the buttons were not
labelled.

Incidentally, do you know what the warranty is? My outdoor module did not
withstand the riggers of last winter as it became buried in snow. Despite many
attempts after battery replacement I have not been able to get it working. I
made sure that the batteries were inserted correctly and I tested them with a
battery tester. .

When I go to Amazon I see additional indoor modules but no outdoor module. I am
going to have to email Netatmo with my serial number to determine if it is
still under warranty. It was a Christmas present.

Re: Apple TV Questions

2015-11-09 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi All. I'm wondering if it is possible to rename the 4th generation Apple TV
as I can't seem to find it in the settings.

I went in under about and it says Apple TV but I don't see where you can rename
it. I have put the second Gen up in our living roman changed it's name to that.
The new one is located in the family room in our basement.
What am I missing here?

Re: how to remove applewatch band

2015-10-11 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Fanus. On either side of the back of the watch is a spring loaded button
which you would hold in with your fingernail. Then slide the strap either
toward the rear or front sides of the watch until it slides out of the groove.
There are two parts to the strap. When sliding the new strap into place
remember to hold that tiny spring loaded button in.

By the front of the watch I mean where the crown and friend buttons are
located.

Hope this helps.

Checkbox for syncing ringtones

2015-09-17 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello all. I have not been successful in transferring purchased ringtones back
to my iPhone nor the ones I have recorded. I suspect that the sync ringtones
checkbox is not checked in iTunes. I found out from the web that in iTunes 11
when the sidebar was available you could find the checkbox under the settings
option. Several steps were described as to how to do this but it does not apply
to the current version of iTunes.

For some reason I cannot locate this checkbox in the current version of iTunes.
even under settings. I sent an email to Apple Support and never received a
response.

Could someone please tell me where the checkbox might be found to enable the
syncing of ringtones

Thanks in advance.

Charged again when downloading KNFBReader

2015-09-03 Thread Barry Abbott
Yesterday I found that My KNFB Reader software was not working properly so I
uninstalled it and downloaded it from my purchases section to my iPhone 6.
After pressing the "buy/restore" button I was charged once again for the
product. I know that someone has mentioned who to contact for a refund but even
after attempting several searches I can't locate the message.

Could someone please send me that info again. They had better solved this issue
quickly as a number of people could get burned.

I am in Canada.

Thanks, Barry

Often you can upgrade from within the app itself.

Try Checking under settings for the app to see if there is an upgrade option.

 Hello all
This morning I went to the app store and looked at a podcast I wanted. When I
first saw it listed, it gave me the option to purchase the premium version. I
did not do that but instead, I downloaded the free version. Once in the app,
I saw hundreds of other episodes that I could only listen to if I had the
 premium version.
I went back to the app store and found it listed in my purchases. It no
longer gave me the option to purchase the premium version. I then deleted the
podcast from the phone and did another search for it. Perhaps, it knew that
I'd already looked at it and downloaded it, because I no longer saw the
option to purchase the premium version.
What am I missing here in this scenario?

have 3 other people on your WiFi streaming stuff it would make a difference.
If you have your Apple TV connected via WiFi then not only the speed and

quality of your WiFi. I used to have an issue at my business where even
playing a video on one of my computers via WiFi would pause and buffer all

 totally and completely went away.

Note: if you have more than one account, you'll need to change that setting

also simply swipe to the right or touch the top right corner of the watch.
However, most of the time it does speak.

Re: Weird problem with Braille Screen

2015-04-26 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi all I went to the Apple store and after reseting and finally erasing the
iPhone we discovered that when I reloaded the data from the backup file on
iCloud the problem returned. I am now rebuilding my folders and reinstalling
my purchases. Though it's a pain in the but at least we are doing a kind of
spring cleaning., The Braille screen now works as it should.

Thanks for the help.

P.S. My wife is enjoying her Apple Watch which came before mine. I'm still

Re: Weird problem with Braille Screen

2015-04-22 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Richard. Thanks for pointing this out. Haste does make waste. In fact, I
took 2 steps. I double tapped on the edit field to activate it and then
attempted to turn the router to the Braille input screen. At this point my
iPhone goes into a loop saying VoiceOver on and it then becomes choppy..

I checked and the regular keyboard is present. Once the loop starts if you lay
the phone flat it says tabletop modeand stops repeating. If you place it back
into the away position it starts all over again. Very strange.

Sieghard. Just wondering how you Mounted the Rain Gage. I have it but will not
be putting it out until all this snow is gone. I have the Outdoor module
mounted on our deck railing and here in Nova Scotia we are snowed under from
the worst storms in 30 years. I am no longer getting readings so I think it may
be buried. It has worked fine since Xmas and I got a low battery reading so
brought it in and changed the batteries. That was before our two recent storms.

Thanks.

 Hi Chris,

To start with your question about the barometric sensor in the iPhone 6
and 6 Plus, yes, they are there, but they are being used for elevation
and you don't have access to them directly. I am not sure if Apple
allows developers access to them since then somebody could I guess make
an app where they display barometric pressure.

Now, as for the Netatmo weather station, it's basically yes to all your
questions. If you buy the basic package for $180 you get 1 indoor and
1 outdoor module. The indoor module gives you indoor temperature,
minimum and maximum indoor temperature from 12:01 AM to Midnight,
indoor humidity, CO2 level, noise level in decibels and barometric
 pressure is displayed.

The outdoor module measures current temperature, minimum and maximum
temperature, it gives you Feels Like temperature and also shows outdoor
 humidity.

You can buy up to 3 more additional indoor modules for $79/each if you
want readings for other rooms/areas of your house, they are like the
outdoor modules and give you everything except for noise level since
that uses too much battery power and requires the main indoor module
which needs to be plugged in.

Netatmo also offers a rain gauge which is of the tipping bucket design
and which works great. It gives you total rainfall starting at 12:01 AM
until Midnight, but if you want to know you have to check just before
midnight because while the previous day's amount is there for sighted
people, it is currently not accessible with Voiceover.

When Netatmo first came out it was almost completely inaccessible. I
bought a station and contacted the company. Their head developer in
Paris, France got a hold of me and we had several Skype conversations
about accessibility, he made changes which I tested and the result was
a very accessible app which gives you most readings, but not all of them.

Netatmo is also in the process of developing an Anemometer (a wind
sensor) which would pretty much complete the stations capabilities.

 Sieghard

Reliably Using the the find command with a Braille Display

2015-03-19 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello All. I am involved with a singing group and have been keeping the lyrics
to the songs in a large text file. I have each song sequentially numbered. I
would simply like to be able to press chord+f on my focus 40 Blue type in the
number and press chord+e or chord+dot 8 and be placed on that number ready to
continue on reading the lyrics.

I have tried a number of apps, drafts, Nebulas, MS-word Voice Dream Writer and
others. The most success I had was with AccessNote In review mode and using dot
8 commands. However, it no longer works properly in iOS8.2 for me. I am using
an iPhone 6.

When I use the find buttons in the toolbars with some apps they will find the
text but then when I press return I am placed back at the beginning of the
document. Note that before I press the return I press space with dots 45 to
enable the edit field to accept the braille input. I have automatic Braille

translation turned off. I tried turning it on but this made know difference.

I also sometimes need to make a change on the fly which is problematic when in
a review mode.

I have a BrailleNotPk but every time I update the file on the mac I have to
go through the process of copying the file via a card reader onto the flash
card of the PK.

While the find command on the PK works perfectly If I could use the 40 cell
Braille display it would make reading some of the lyrics easier, especially if
it is a faster piece.
It would be nice to simply sync my changes and be ready to rock-and-roll

Is this an issue for many of you or am I going about things in the wrong way?

Thanks.

Barry

Re: Hearing Aids and iPhone 6+

2015-02-07 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi. I use the Oticon Ultra Pro Hearing Aids. And the Oticon Streamer remote
control device that came as part of the package. It allows me to stream music,
a book or Blind Square through my hearing Aids. It does sound somewhat like you
are in a room with an echo. But if you are listening to a book or music and
mute your hearing Aids microphones it's not bad. It is the open microphones
that cause the echo effect I think. You can also quickly push a button to
activate Siri and if you hold it in for a second it will dial the last number.
What I don't like is that the hearing aids change programs so if an alert comes
through you get a series of beeps and the mode switches. This switching of
modes with the consequential beeps seems to cut out the Siri tone. The remote
connects by low power bluetooth and hangs around the neck. It also has a
standard jack for plugging in a patch chord to connect with other devices. It
also controls the programs and volume on the Hearing Aids.

The key to making sure that you can hear VoiceOver is to have the Audiologists
check the music mode.

There are two iPhone apps Connect Line used for connecting your Streamer and
Oticon Streamer The Streamer app allows me to set the modes as well but I did
not know about it when I first got these Hearing Aids.

Have a great day.

Re: Option Key on the Zagg Folio Keyboard for iPad Mini

2015-01-14 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Joseph Thanks much for the response. . My keyboard layout for the iPad
Mini is different than what you describe. There are three keys to the left of
the spacebar Ctrl, FN and Command. To the right of the spacebar there is a
command key then the arrow keys.

I guess it's time to visit the folks at the Apple Store to see if they can
figure this one out. If not, I have a friend who has an iPad Mini who could
probably be persuaded to purchase this keyboard at a reasonable price since she
does not require VoiceOver.

What do I need to do to change the name of the device to Barb's iPhone.

Thanks in advance.

Streamer for Oticon Hearing Aids

2014-10-05 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello everyone. I'm wondering if anyone out there is using the Streamer 1.02
which allows you to link your Hearing Aids with your iPhone. It is a remote
controller for the hearing Aids that can also be connected to devices via patch
cord or bluetooth. I am using the bluetooth connectivity.

I can make calls using SIRI but VoiceOver is disabled through the unit so I
cannot make calls using the phone dial pad or contacts.

I have also figured out how to stream music and to turn the Hearing Aid
Microphones on or off when listening to music or an audio book. However, there
doesn't seem to be a way to pause and or resume the audio through the remote
streamer. According to the manual you start the audio on the device first and
then link the hearing aid. This method works. But then there is no way of
stoping it other then to unlink the bluetooth connection. There is an audio
button but it doesn't seem to do anything. I link it using a device switch
that chooses a device to connect to such as a TV Adapter Etc. I am connecting
it to my iPhone 6.

Does anyone use this particular unit who can give me some advice.

I will be speaking to my audiologist but VoiceOver is new to her. Of course she
sees the icon for Siri come up.

Please feel free to contact me off list.
Thanks.

Re: Is anyone using any fitness tracking wrist bands?

2014-08-23 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello all. I have just purchased the Fitbit one activity and sleep wristband.
When looking at it it would appear that you need to remove one side of the
wristband in order to plug-in the end of the charging cradle. I'm just
wondering how to do this as I don't want to accidentally break the device. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Barry

 Hello,

The fitbit connects to your phone, iPad or computer via bluetooth. You can
set up to 5 different alarms.

I love my flex and hope to get the aria scale eventually. Right now I'm

Lay the device in the palm of your hand. You want the slanted side
facing up toward your fingertips. If that part makes since, we are doing
well. This is the orientation we want the device in for everything else.

For charging, I use my small iPhone block or a low voltage bluetooth
charger. I plug in the fitbit charging cable into my iPhone block.

Lay the charging cradle in the palm of your hand. The USB end pointing
at your wrist, the cradle end toward your fingertips. There is pronounced
ridges on the base of the cradle, this is the correct side up.

The fitbit device slides right into the cradle. Again, slanted side up
 as I described earlier.

Lol, hopefully I'm doing ok here.

Onto the flex band... No matter which wrist you choose, the plastic
viewing window is always on the outer side of your wrist. The slanted end
of the fitbit has the lights, so you want those to show upwards inside the
band. Putting the device in the band takes some practice a bit of
wiggling. I slip that slanted side upwards first, then with a little
pushing and riggling, it slips into place.

Good luck! If you need further assistance or a different perspective on
describing things, there are great podcasts by David Woodbridge over on

Re: Zagg Folio for iPad Mini

2014-08-03 Thread Barry Abbott
Hello Crystal. I think that it is the same keyboard that I have. On the right
side toward the front there are two switches. The slide switch is the power
on/off. In front of it is a button you push in. Hold it for about two seconds
and you should be in pairing mode.
Be sure to power on the keyboard first.
Be sure to turn on quick nav with the lift and right arrow keys. To activate a
button press the up and down arrow keys together.

One disadvantage is that there is no auction key so I use the regular jesters
to start and stop voiceOver reading. Left and uparrow together move you back
through the router functions, up and right arrow move you forward through the
router functions. Press the up or down arrow to move by the chosen router
setting.

The FN key is on the far left. Using it in combination with the arrow keys
does the page up page down home and end.

on the top row going from left to right are: Apple Homekey, lock and unlock
key, Siri, and ten function keys.
The second row is the number keys and the 1 is a skinny key. The letter q is a
little larger. Haven't figured out the caps lock key I thought that you hold
down the fn key and tab but that doesn't seem to work..

If there is a way to have a VO key I haven't found it so it would be wonderful
if someone else knows how to do this.

Hope this helps.

Re: Controling a DVR with Slingbox?

2014-07-22 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Jared. I don't see why not as I can hear all of the DVR labels. I did,
however, relabel many of the buttons.

I have a Motorola V1200 receiver but do not use the DVR features as they are
locked because I don't want to pay the $10.00 a month to have it activated. But
I have noticed that it does read the buttons.

The big stumbling block for me was that I could not figure out the power
button for the receiver as the icon label made no sense. It is under the
Remote Control bar. I almost took the Sling Box back but once I found out where
it was and Labelled it I was then able to power up the receiver.

Don't waste your time on an iPad, Kindle Fire or computer because the program
lists do not read. But the iPhone does provide both the channel and
descriptions. I was also able to set up my favourites and delete channels I did
not want. To bring up the controls when a video is playing you double tap the
top of the landscape screen.

I am currently at the Seeing Eye and listen to CBC National news in real time
every night without any difficulty. Had I had it when we were in Florida I
would have been able to follow the Canadian Olympic hockey games although I
still watched a few.

When I want to stop a program playing I lock the screen. The two finger
double-tap doesn't work. I have my slingPlayer set to start at the guide rather
than connecting to a specific channel.

Feel free to email me off list. I will be returning home next Thursday.

Slingbox 500

2014-03-30 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi all. Yesterday I purchased the Slingbox 500 and here are a few things I have
found:

I had my neighbour help me by correctly connecting the component cables. I
chose not to connect using the HDMI cables. With the model 500 you can set up
the sling box using your computer.

1. The Slingplayer for iPhone is not perfect but quite accessible. The buttons
are graphics but there is a tag below the button that tells you what it does.
I have labelled some of the buttons and I can rely on the tags below the
buttons.

One example is the tag which says return which a sighted person sees in the
centre of the graphical button. This is actually the back button so I labelled
it accordingly. My neighbour told me that my label does not change what he sees
on the screen - I had always wondered about this.

2. the channel guide is accessible on the iPhone screen. Once you choose the
channel just double tap on it and it will connect. You get a percentage of the
current program as well as the description from the guide.

3. However, the channel guide on the iPad is not accessible - it is an image.
VoiceOver says empty list.

4. The keypad is a little tricky to get to but once you do the same pattern
happens. The graphic label might say blackchannelentry button which is
followed by the channel number. You tap the button, not the number and the
graphic proceeds the number. I relabelled those as well for faster entry.

It is definitely usable but takes some effort.

When playing a program double tap the screen and the control bar appears.

However, I haven't yet figured out how to stop a program from playing-
double-tapping with two fingers does not work.
I have 30 days to check it out and other than the iPad issue I'm happy with it
to date although there needs to be some accessibility improvements.

Both the Slingbox 500 and 350 come with a IR remote but you cannot set up the
350 on the computer so you would have to have sighted assistance during the
initial setup.

I hope that some of you find this information helpful.

Re: Digit

2013-06-20 Thread Barry Abbott
Yes, the Dijit accessibility has improved significantly. The Power macros
which were totally inaccessible now work. But there are still issues with the
Volume which is a control that you press on the top or bottom if you can see
it. Also depending on the remote these things can change. For instance to make
the dennon volume increase you make a circle. These things do not work with
VoiceOver However, you can change the channels by using the guide or doing a
search.

As some of you may remember I did write a lengthy email to the company and
heard nothing back other than an acknowledgement that it would be looked into.

So I gave up on it until just recently. You create an account and your settings
are saved their. You can make different settings for each room. You can set it
up to control multiple devices using the macros which are accessible. If all
else fails you can learn from another remote if that brand is not available.
Initial sighted assistance will be necessary especially if you are working
with a multiple sound system.

Right now I have it working with our living room TV and Bell Aliant Motorola
receiver. I did this totally without sighted assistance. I can't seem to figure
out how to control the Volume. VoiceOver shows the control but you can't use
it. But there are sometimes more than one way to accomplish the task so I've
yet to sit down and give it another go.

I will have to get my neighbour over again to help me with our basement system.
setup.

it works like this, you create a set up for each room. Within that room you may
have several configurations such as watch TV Radio, DVD, Etc. Each one has
its' own set of Power on and Power off sequences. You can turn on each device
in sequence and place a delay time between each activation. I had no problem
doing this or reordering the sequences and delays. So you might for example,
power on your Motorola receiver, then have a 2 second delay and then power on
the tv. I do the reverse to Power off.

Sorry about the long post butit might clarify things a bit.

Have to run.

Is anyone using a Wireless Talking Thermometer for their pool?

2013-06-16 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi all. I have done some research and haven't found Anything that would connect
through the Acu-Link weather App for the iPhone..

There is a Wireless non-talking Home / Digital Floating Water Thermometer with
Indoor Display for Pool / Spa / Lake 00617 through acurite.com. It doesn't
appear to work with the Acu-link App as it has its' own receiver..

I did write them an email suggesting that they add a speech chip to this indoor
unit.

The Acu-Link does work with a number of weather sensors but this is not what I
need I would like to be able to check the pool temperature from within the
house.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Looking for suggestions for heart rate monitoring

2013-03-13 Thread Barry Abbott
Hi Rick. I'm using the Wahoo Bluetooth Heart Monitor along with the Wahoo
fitness app. I haven't played around with it much yet. So it is a work still
in progress. You can set up different types of workouts but I can't figure out
what type to set up when you are doing a round of different types of exercises.

Once you have paired it with the iPhone; You just wet the pads, snap on the
monitor and make sure that the heart sensor is turned on in the Wahoo app. I
have just started working out so it is all very new to me. I can get VO to read
the number once I place my finger on it so it should monitor the changes in
heart rate. I had the trainer watching the changes. visually. Next time I am
going to wear my earPods and I should be able to monitor the changes myself.

I find it very comfortable and non-intrusive to wear. It's $75.00 if memory
serves me correctly.

Re: Is there an accessible TV remote app for the iPhone

2013-03-09 Thread Barry Abbott
A few years ago I purchased the Dijit remote for the iPhone. I wrote a long
description of some issues and forwarded it to Griffin technologies. .
Essentially you could program the device but VoiceOver did not recognize the
Power on or off Macros. Nor some buttons.

This has changed with the last update. I can now power on and off the devices.
I haven't spent much time working with it as I am dealing with other family
health issues right now so I haven't given it much attention. . VoiceOver does
speak the generic buttons as far as I have gone with it to date. I would not
want to suggest that someone purchase the Griffin Bluetooth Remote unless they
are willing to really put it through it's paces and return it if it doesn't
work.

Those of you who use the Dijit software will know that they have revamped their
web site.

One thing I particularly like about using the remote is that you can review the
Channels and if there is a program you wish to watch double tap it and dijit
will cause the Griffin Remote to switch to that channel

You can set different profiles for each room and macros to sequentially turn on
or off your devices. You can also have it learn a variety of remotes.

I do plan to spend some time working with it as it would be particularly useful
for our surround sound system but having started working on this already I know
that it will take some time and I have more important priorities right now.

Everyone have a great day.

Re: Are there any accessible TV guide apps that work in Canada

I use Dijit with a J by Griffin technologies however, despite several messages
about improving the accessibility for their universal remote which is so close
to being totally accessible they have shown absolutely no interest in fixing
the problem.

Nevertheless, I can find out about what shows
are on which channels as well as the details.

I am with Bell Aliant here in Nova Scotia. It also works with other Canadian
Cable and satellite providers.

I have used it on my iPhone 4, and now 5, as well as on my wife's third gen
iPod. The app is free and you will have to play with it a bit to understand how
it works.

But it is very usable.
