Re: [Audyssey] ***SPAM*** Public betas vs private testing

2010-01-26 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI Philip
Sorry for coming in a bit late.
I personally feel you should keep it at private beta testing, but give
us feedback via e-mail of what the game is and what features you added.
The final release will still be a nice surprise as people will not know
what sounds you have put in.
That's my 2 cents view.

Subject: ***SPAM*** [Audyssey] Public betas vs private testing

Hi all,

I just wanted to put a question out. What are your opinions of private
testing with a dedicated team versus publicly released betas that
everyone can try out? I have a new game in development now, and I am
considering whether to make a public beta available similar to what
Thomas Ward and Jason Alan have done. I see some pros and cons with
private testing, though:

Pros:
1. Easier to manage. Since you have only a few people who are testing
the game you do not need to answer the same questions or receive the
same bug reports numerous times.

2. The element of surprise. With a private team, very few people know
about the development and so it comes as more of a nice surprise when
something new is released, where as in the case when everyone knows
pretty much everything that is going on it's hardly unexpected when a
game finally is released. In the worst case, some people may even have
gotten tired of the game after playing the betas!

Cons:

1. Limited testing=more possible bugs. If you have a smaller team you
are not as likely to catch every single bug before the product goes to
release. This can result in some pretty rapid patch releases (1.0.1,
1.0.2, 1.1, etc) right after 1.0 has been put out and this obviously
doesn't look too good.

2. Nagging. If everyone knows about the game while it is being
developed, I fear that some people would be sending emails asking when
the next version is out or wanting to know why this or that feature that
they suggested hasn't been implemented. This is of course a very broad
generalization and I do not in any way wish to insinuate that a lot of
people do this, but there are a few cases and it might make it annoying
for the developer to see the project all the way to the end. If no one
except the private testing team knows about the game, then you will not
get any public comments before you go 1.0 and then you are obviosly
prepared to take them.

On the other hand, of course, more public suggestions means more good
possible ideas for the developer to work with. Thoughts, anyone?

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] new game idea: teddy bear machines

Hi Nicol,
Yes, we have those machines here in the United States too. However, they

aren't exactly fair. The main reason is they are specifically designed
not to be able to pick up the larger stuffed toys, and in many other
cases there is a switch in the arm that prevents it from grabbing the
toys too tightly. In other words the game cheats. As a result you have a

very slim chance in actually getting a toy out of one of those machines.
However, my uncle has good luck playing with those toy machines. He
starts by going for the smaller stuffed toys, and those not packed too
tightly into the machine. Some times it takes a couple of tries to
actually get one of the toys out, because he will have it part way to
the exit when the arm just lets go of it. Still they can be beaten if
you have enough money and patients to take out the toys one by one even
if it isn't exactly the toy you want.
I remember a case a few years back we were in the mall and my uncle
stood at one of those machines playing all day. he would take quarters
from kids and he would get little stuffed lions, monkeys, dogs, whatever

out of the machine left and right. When I asked him how he did that he
said there is a trick to it, and you pretty much have to know which toys

the arm will take and which ones it will just drop or not get a good
grip on. Just because there is a big panda sitting on top of the heap of

stuffed toys doesn't mean the machine can actually get it out. However,
it is something most kids would try and get out spending lots of
quarters on a single big toy instead of going for something less
desirable but more accessible and likely to get.
As far as an accessible computerized version goes it could be
interesting. Although, I'm not sure on how to make it so that it would
be realistic. A lot of people don't get anything out of those machines,
and there has to be a pretty high statistical chance against getting
certain toys out of the machine. There is a lot of factors such as size,

wait, and how tightly the toy is in the machine. how often the arm
simply drops a toy because it doesn't have a good tight grip on it. Lots

of things to think about here.

Cheers!

[Audyssey] maze game problem

2009-12-22 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI all
Can anybody remember a very old game called the maze game?
The company who made it is t d l games.
Do they still exist?
Well, I have tried playing this game on 3 computers now.
On my desktop with a Celeron 2.66 ghz, the sound of the water is muted.
On my mom's pc, I play games on her pc when I visit her once or twice a
month, she has got a du ron processor, somewhere around 2 ghz.
And I recently bought myself a laptop, a centrino also with 2 something
ghz.
Both on my mom's pc and on my laptop, I cannot kill one of the later
monsters. I have played the game too long ago on my mom's pc, but on my
laptop, it happened that the second monster I encountered, I was
unable to kill him .I walked back in the maze until I reached the first
barier but I couldn't find any ammo.
And I walked back again to where the monster is, but I found no ammo
still.
I slowly walked back and forth a few times but couldn't found any
ammo.
If I press s the monster still growls and I do not hear the sound of my
gun.
And I am 110 percent certain that I haven't wasted any ammo.
I only fired until the first monster died.
So I am stuck, I cannot continue playing the game.
Has anybody had this problem?

Hello All,
A new version of Three-D Velocity, the combat flight simulator, is now
ready for download. It includes an autoplay mode, force feedback
support, and an audio version of the mission briefing found on the
Three-D Velocity download page. The game supports Windows XP, Vista and
Seven. Please visit http://www.bpcprograms.com/news.htm to read more,
and http://www.bpcprograms.com/programs to download the game. This is a
full install; no upgrade install exists since a lot of stuff has been
updated. Also please COMPLETELY uninstall previous versions of TDV
before instaling the new version--this includes left over settings files
as well once the uninstall is complete. This will ensure that data in
the previous format will not interfere with the new version (old
settings files have been known to cause distortion in some parts of the
game.)
Happy flying!

The TJS program is designed to exit if you do not enter an appropriate

[Audyssey] new game idea: teddy bear machines

2009-12-21 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Attention all south African members: arrie willem and jakob
But you guys in other parts of the world may also comment.
Have you seen those machines where one can win a teddy bear by beating
a little game?
My mom has always told me about these machines, they are very tricky.
Basically you are using an arm to pick up one of the teddy bears inside
the machine. You have to press buttons similarly to those found on
joysticks, the arm is inside the machine.
Its very tricky, most of the times the teddy bear falls off the arm into
the bucket before one can retrieve it.
Basically one have to move the arm forward somewhat like in a
sidescroller, till the arm riches a teddybear, then one have to try and
pick up the bear with this arm and bring it to the side of the bucket
and lift it high enough so that the machine releases it.
The machine will try its best to drop the bear again.
So how would you guys feel about a game similar to these teddy bear
machines ?Of course, I am not the potential developer, I just wish that
a game like these teddy bear machines can be made.
The teddy bear machines I have been to, while you play the game and also
while the machine idles until someone else plays, the music these
machines plays, is the lambada tune instrumentally.
Have you guys in other parts of the world also seen these teddy bear
machines? Some of them even contains watches.
A teddy bear catch game would rock.

Mike, I don't know how long you have been on this list and other lists
where Mysteries of the aintients is discussed, but the same questions
and things get brought up over and over. Thomas then has to repeat over
and over why something won't work or why he doesn't want to implement
it. I don't even want to know what his personal inbox looks like! It's
just that there are about a million simple requests coming in while
Thomas clearly and repeatedly stated that he won't be adding new
features and he is moving into the final phases of the beta.

You could simply say your post was the final straw. In fact the same
question about loading and saving was asked two days ago and Thomas then

also explained why he won't put it into the demo. It makes logical
sense. Have you played any of the audio games, barring entombed, which
is a different kind of game, where you could save? This is why it is a
demo. You can look at all the gma game engine games, monkey business and

many other examples. The demo, even a beta, can't contain all the
features of the full release.

Liam, I wish you could have seen me.

I am crying bitterly.
I am crying so much so that my body is shaking
MY eyes are completely wet of all the crying.
I am feeling so sorry for tom.
I wish I could have took a spaceship or something, go to America and
comfort tom. I would have taken tom out for dinner at a spur just to
calm him down.
Poor Tom, why does the man have to go through all this hell?
Why? Its unnecessary.
Please stop the bashing.
USA games is an individual game developer who needs free time with his

USA games consist of only 1 individual who develops mota as a hobby.
USA games is not a multi person company who makes a living out of games.
Please understand this.

Normally I don't way in here. Usually I sit back and watch.
But Thomas I have to disagree. All these projects you took on of your
own
choice. No offense man, but I'm getting kind of tired of the poor
pitiful
me excuse for things. You took on projects that were supposedly close
to
completion by the previous author. I don't want to open another can of
worms, but I think most everyone knows that that wasn't true. The
problem
comes in when people are not patient. I know it, you know it. We're
both
game developers. However, stomping on the floor and acting like a 2
year
old is not going to help anyone at all. Take a step back, and keep
working.
But, if your not happy with the community then don't do it. As far as I
can
tell, noone is holding a gun to your head saying write these games or
else.
You've made the decision to program games. So please. Stop singing
poor
poor pitifil me.
Solution for your save game problem. When the game opens. Check the
files.
Keep a version tag inside the file. If they don't match. Erase the
files
and there ya go. It's fairly straight forward to implament, and will
give
people their save and load options they want.

[Audyssey] games we'd like to play: 3d interference

2009-12-07 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
IN this game, you have to find your way to your office.
You, the player, is working for the south African revenue services.
Its an easy task to get from reception to the door that leads into the
contact centre and vice versa, but the difficult part is to find your
office once you are in the contact centre.
There is 2 entrances to your office.
The one you have to go through the pause area or relaxation area.
Go through the backdoor of the pause area and go down a passage and you
will get your office.
Once you are on a ramp, you know that you are into the pause room.
That is the easy way.
Or you have to find 2 steps going down right at the other side of the
contact centre, then you will be in the same passage.
You will have to deal with fellow employees shouting directions at you.
straight! Straight!
no! no! this way, this way!
no, the other way. The other way.
you're wrong, you're wrong!
oh please help the guy, he is going to bump into a cupboard!
You lose the game when your boss ron, comes to you and ask you in his
icy snapelike voice:
hey, where are you off too?
Avoid bumping into cupboards.
Walk between the desks of busy agents.
If you are near the machinery room, you know you are wrong.
Use the left and right arrows to turn 6 degrees, the up and down arrows
to walk forward and backwards, and numpad 0 to snap 180 degrees.
Check the manual for other keystrokes.
You are armed with a water host.
You have to splat water on people yelling directions at you from their
desks .But beware, if you wet their pcs, telephones and papers instead,
you will face suspension and the game is over.
This game idea is based on a real life situation that your fellow gamer
faces each ruddy day when arriving to and departing from work.

[Audyssey] games we'd like to play: town madness

2009-12-07 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
IN this 3d adventure game, you are blind and you have to do your
errands on your own.
You have to, of course, use a cain to advance through the town.
The town is situated in the beautiful state of Connecticut.
You have been disapproved for a dog because you battle with directions.
IN this game, you can press shift+up arrow to walk ahead continuously,
which is definitely recommended.
You can press up and down arrows to take one step forward or backwards,
but its not recommended.
While your character is walking, hold the spacebar down and swing your
caine with the left and right arrows.
The trick is not to swing your cain to far as to hit bypassers else you
will land in court on manslaughter or woman abuse charge, and the game
is over.
You may either want to hold down the left and right arrows while you are
holding spacebar, or you may only want to press the left and right
arrows and release it, you have to master the trick of swinging your
caine to the left and right just the right distances.
You will hear the sound of your cane as your character taps it on the
ground. When you are facing a corner or turn off, simply stop swinging
your cane and use the arrows to change direction as in sod.
Once inside a shop of your choice, hit the v key to bring up a view mode
containing all items you can buy in your vicinity.
Use up and down arrows, and enter to add it to your shopping basket.
Once you get to the counter, your character will automatically pay for
the groceries .And of course, the tricky part everyone's has been
waiting for. You obviously need to cross streets as you want to visit
more than one shop and also coffee shops situated in different streets.
So the trick is to listen for the robot making a loud whissel in some
streets. If it makes a soft whissel, it means that cars on another
street that the one you are waiting on, have to stop.
And of course, not all the streets in this game has robot whissels, so
in that case you have to listen when its quiet and the trick is to run
if there is no cars.
You are armed with a holstered flame thrower, so if a drunk or reckless
driver knocks you off your feet, blow his car to dust with your flame
thrower. You might sometimes be lucky to find a friendly driver who
will take you to the next shop you want to be.
IF that happens, you get some bonus points and of course, you don't have
to worry about crossing the next street!
This game, if it really existed, will help you understand mobility
issues, or as the Americans call it, travel issues.
The game, if only it existed, will teach you when to pass a busy road
when no cars Is coming. It will also teach you to swing your cane just
the right distance.
Thanks mister nobody, the game rocks!
Lol!

Generally 266MHz is 266 megahertz, where 2.6 would generally be GHz -
gigahertz, where a giga is 1024 times a mega.

Old school computer science was based on something like:
1 bit times 8 = 1 byte, times 1024 = 1 kilobyte, times 1024 = 1 megabyte

times 1024 = 1 gigabyte, times 1024 = 1 terabyte, etc. etc.

Kilo is times 1000 in the real world, and times 1024 in computers, a
mega is
the equivalent of a million, but equals 1024 times 1024 in computers
etc.
etc.

Also remember that the difference between 1Kb and 1KB is the difference
between a kilobit and a kilobyte, and the same applies to MB and Mb
)check
case sensitivity), but those differences are mostly applied to either
speeds, or audio track bitrates/quality.

Stay well

[Audyssey] sircus mod for sl

2009-12-03 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI all
Here is a more detailed sneek preview to my sircus mod I am busy
developing. Here is level1's layout for now:
Big
Spoiler
Space
All the cut sceens will contain my voice as well as cool sircus music
recorded by yours sincerely.
Level1: welcome to the boswell wilky sircus tent.
Obstacles:
Instead of robotic troopers, you will face baby donkeys.
They enjoy hot water on their backs, and if you do not splat some hot
water on them, they will kick you and you will lose a bit of your
health. So instead of shooting the trooppers, you are carrying a self
filling container full of warmwater with a host pipe in front.
Instead of the robodogs, there will be real dogs, poodles to be exact.
Instead of shooting robodogs, you will give a bone to each little sircus
poodle approaching you.
If you do not give them a bone, they will bite you in your leg and you
will lose some health.
Of course, in most levels you will hear your footsteps on tent material.
It will sound as if you are walking in a huge tent.
Instead of the monkeys dropping coconuts, you will find gorillas
throughout this level. They sit on chairs hoisted in to the air a
little, these chairs are made of silver and the guirillas are in fact
tossing coconuts at you and you will lose health if one lands on your
head. For now I am not going to tell you what kind of music will be in
each level, but it will definitely be sircus music.
For each level there will be another kind of sircus music, mainly
showtune and march rhythms.
The teleporter sound as you are getting closer will be a solo trumpet
tune and the music that plays while you are teleporting will be a nice
sircus tune.
IN this sircus mod only the last part of level7 will be a boss level.
The final act of level1 will be a german shepherd riding on a swing high
in the air. AS he descends, he will take a munch at your leg and take
away some health obviously.
The german shepherd does not like warm water, so before he can get too
close to the ground to munch your leg, throw warm water at him until he
jumps off the swing and runs bark-bark to the sircus boss.
Stay tune for level2's layout.

Hi Nicol and all.

The reason that we don't give cpu specs for pipe 2 or any of our other
games
is that these games are not real resource hogs, any semi-decent system
will
run them. I've run all of the bsc games on a pentium II system with 256
megs of ram and a 350MHZ processor and they run fine provided you have a
decent sound card. If you have a crummy sound card with poor buffering
then
you may have some slight sluggishness on a slow system like this. Other
than that you don't need to worry about it all that much. I am only
talking
about BSC games here, your results will vary with other games.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dark,
Well, at this point I'm not sure how much actual advertising we need. I
think the big picture, as has been said before, is to get the word out
that good high quality games exist. By showing off game x and letting a
few blind people try them, perhaps let their friends and family see
them, etc it might make a difference in letting people know that this
stuff exists and it doesn't need to remain in the backwater of the
galaxy forever. It is time we make ourselves known to more and more
people, agencies for the blind, and break out of this apathetic rut we
have fallen into.

Hi Nicol,
Sure can. The primary difference between First Person and Third Person
games is purely visual. In a Third Person game like Tomb Raider you can
see the main character like Lara Croft on the screen, at all times, as
you move around the game world. It is like a movie where you can see all

the players on the screen at once. In a First Person game like Doom
there is no actual character on screen and the entire visual perspective

is if you were actually standing there in the game, and all you might see

of your game character is an arm holding a weapon or something like
that. Otherwise there is very little difference how the game is actually

played. Does that make sense?

limited, occasionally scrolling view point.
I beg to differ from you somewhat.
If you try to compare third person games with literature, no audio side
scroller is third person, as liam himself is talking in the cut sceens.
A third person game would be a game where the cut sceen is of someone
observing what is liam doing.
If super liam for instance were a third person game, you wouldn't have
heard liam's voice in the cut sceens, but an observer's voice instead.
For example, in the cut sceen of the lava lake, instead of liam saying:
You want me to go through that to kill a stupid robot?
If it were A third person game, there would have been the voice of an
observer instead of the voice of liam.
The voice would have sounded something like:
liam thinks its ridiculous to go through this to killa stupid robot.
The same with the ouch sounds liam makes when an enemy or fireball or
lazar hits him.
If sl were a third person game, you would have heard the voice of the
observer saying:
ouch, that must have been sore.
So therefore I agree with tom rather that third person games is only
mainstream.

Subject: [Audyssey] News from PCS Games

Hi Folks,
I was sure my update to the Sarah game would be finished by now.
But my wife getting a new Guide dog from the Seeing Eye has slowed down
my
game development work.
It's probably like having a three year old visit, strange feeding
schedules,
sibling interactions to police, and sleeping arrangements to be sorted
out.
So at this time I can only outline some of the changes in version 1.2

1. The number of different potions you can brew has increased from one
to 3,
and the locations of the ingredients are concentrated on only two
floors.
On the ground floor you will find a potion book that lists the three
types
of potions you can make plus the list of ingredients that are needed to
brew
them.
Along with the current Polyjuice potion you will be able to brew
Amortentia, a powerful love potion, and Felix Felicis, the Liquid Luck
Potion.
The potion brewing is now in the potions classroom on the dungeon level.
2. You can now apparate to specific parts of the floor you are on, once
you
find the map and use it.
For example on the Ground floor and Basement you can apparate to the
Broom
Cupboard, or the Great Hall.
Once you get the map you can then apparate to the Kitchen or the
Centaur
Divination Classroom, or the Hufflepuff common room.
3. The map allows you to examine just what is in the area around you, in
an
area 70 feet north and south and 100 feet east and west.
4. There are new rooms and new creatures that you will encounter,
including
one very nasty rat.
5. Once you find your way out of the castle you will have the
opportunity to
go through the Maze that was built for the Triwizard Tournament that has
a
surprise at the center, different than the cup in the book.
6. You will find many items from the joke shop sprinkled through the
castle,
especially in the students dorm rooms.
On each floor of Hogwarts you will find a Skiving Snackbox filled with a

random candy.
If you drop a Snackbox candy near Filch you will hear.
him picking it up, unwrapping and eating the candy.
Filch then reading the name of the candy on the wrapper.
and finally, Filch being sick and unable to go after you for a time.
7. You will find five more spells in your spell list.
Descendo,
Causes a trap door to lower.
Wingardium Leviosa,
Makes objects fly.
Evanesco,
Makes something vanish.
Expelliarmus,
the disarming spell.
Reducto,
Blasts solid objects out of your path.

8. random creature feature.
On the easy level, some of the creatures are there 50 percent of the
time
while in standard they are there 75 percent of the time.
This makes those two levels of difficulty slightly less difficult.

9. There is a novel titled Sarah Goode and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry, which is based on this game in your game folder. This is the
ultimate walkthrough for the Sarah and the castle of witchcraft and
wizardry
game.

This update will be free to all registered owners of the game,
and I will try my hardest to have it done in December.

[Audyssey] mod idea

2009-12-01 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI all
I want to tell you all about an excellent idea I've been having for a
mod. But first of all, I need to get permission to distribute mods with
super liam as basis.
I've seen a thread long ago where a chap made a land mine mod out of sl.
I've been thinking to do the same.'
I want to make a sircus mod out of sl.
Instead of jumping across soors, fire pits, snakes and the like, I will
create a mod where you can jump across fire rings, fire pots, balls and
monkeys. I can create my own game sounds and game music using my Yamaha
keyboard, as it has got a .WAV recorder.
One thing I've been thinking to add to this mod is large colored balls
you must jump over, instead of the motorcycles.
Instead of the lazars, I've been thinking to add pigs made of stone
where boiled water ooses out at said intervals.
Instead of the coconuts in level1, I have been thinking of large
elefants trying to hit you with their trunks as you walk pass.
I will also create footsteps that will sound as if you are walking in a
sircus tent.
This is just the start of my mod ideas, but first I need permission
before I can share my sircus mod with fellow gamers.

Hi jim,
Thanks for the code example. Actually my Genesis engine has a quick and
easy way to stop and silence all sounds just by calling the PauseSounds
function. My big question was though why they would want me to pause
sounds when pausing the game. After all when you switch out of the game
window it pauses the sounds and resumes them when the window has focus
so they aren't in the way when using a chat program, e-mail, whatever.

Re: [Audyssey] Side scrollers was: MOTA Side-Scroller vs FPS

2009-11-25 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI tom
I feel quite upset with your e-mail.
I am going to try and be as polite as possible.
Especially one statement in your e-mail almost drove me to tears.
I am fedup.
Let me tell you something quickly.
A little illustration:
Some time ago, a colleague asked if she may borrow some sugar from me.
She could actually see on my face that I did not want to borrow it to
her. Then she said that I must just leave it.
Then with a sigh, I eventually said that she may borrow sugar from me.
Just note what her words were:
no thank you. Your sugar in my coffee will taste bad.
Now this is the message I want to give you, tom.
I will not say it in the same rude words that this colleague said, but
if people learn that you are fed up with the mota development, it will
put them off to buy the game as they will likely experience it in the
game that you actually rushed to get it done with.
I myself will only buy a game from a dev if I know the dev really
wanted to develop the game for the vi community.
But from the spirit of your message, Tom, It seems like you do not
really enjoy to develop the game, you just want to get it done and over
with .You just want to keep 100 nagging e-mails off your case.
If you really cannot take it any further, why not rather stop
development of mota entirely?
In any event, with the new development kit of blasbay studios, blind
people should be able to develop a game similar to mota.
I am off my soap box now.

Hi Yohandy,
I really wish it could be that simple. Unfortunately, a game developer
seases to have a private life after he announces he is writing a game.
Sooner or later someone will begin e-mailing him on a regular basis
asking how the game is coming along, what features has he added, when is

the next beta going to be released, can he add this or that feature, you

name it. There is no escaping the constant e-mail from his customers
unless he drops off line for a few months.
In the end it was exactly this constant unwanted mail that caused James
North to just give up and quit. Some people wanted to know what was
going on, some people demanded he produce a demo when they wanted it,
some people wanted their money back, and so on. At the same time he was
dealing with some personal matters, and no one left him alone to deal
with his personal life let alone finish the games as he had time. Now, I

find myself in a similar situation where I don't have much of a personal

life, because I am doing this and that for the game with a constant flow

of e-mails that never quit. No matter what I add to the game, no matter
what I do, there is someone else with a new suggestion, likes or
dislikes what I did, and I am totally fed up with the entire project.
However, unlike james North I'm not going to just quit.
Eventually, I may have to take your advice and just write the game my
way and tell everyone to live with it. Since I'm a nice guy, I try to
listen to my customers, i would hate to do it that way. Yet if I can't
find some sort of consensus I'll do it my way and forget about it.
Although, the consensus seams to be keep MOTA exactly as is. I'm not
sure how i feel about that, but it does make sense.

Hi Folks,
With the Holidays on the horizon I just ordered the hand held Freeze Up
Talking Category Game

by Educational Insights

If you're familiar with the word game Scattegories, the premise is
similar.
The game will give you a category and a letter and you must come up with
an
answer that fits. The game is timed and is intended for two to eight
players. It talks and is completely usable by the blind.

Let's play Freeze Up. - the keep-your-cool countdown category game.
Quick.
Name an animal that starts with C.
How about a fruit that starts with B
or a flower that starts with T?
Sounds easy, right? No clue? Losing time? Press the button to change the

category or the letter. Think fast, but think smart, other players may
challenge your answer. With the clock ticking, players must keep their
cool
and answer before their time's up and they're frozen out. The last
player
left in this fast-paced electronic category game is the Freeze Up
champion.
Features two challenging ways to play, - nail-biting AUTO mode and
self-paced MANUAL mode.
170+ think-quick categories, built-in timer and scorekeeper,
crystal-clear
speech, and fun sound effects. Fun for the entire family. Requires 3 AA
batteries (not included).

Can be found at Amazon.com.

Hello Dark,

I am on core-exiles as of two days ago. I am now at level 5 and still
working my way through the initial missions. I am running Jaws V. 10 on
Windows Vista Office and am not experiencing the problems with the web
interface which you have discussed here. When I use the scan area, jaws
sorts the table out properly. So, after each bit of ship information,
the first button is view which allows you to see specific breakdown of
shields, armor, hull points, number of weapons and tunnage, and finally
the speed of the ship. Then, there is a button labeled engage. Or, you
can just hit the attack button. Both buttons are right after the ship
description and quite easy to find. Note: I am using Internet Explorer
because I could not get Firefox to interact properly with the game.

The only work-around which I need to do is press control-enter any time
a link opens a new window. If I do not manually initiate the new window
call, the link will not activate.

Try downloading the demo of Jaws and playing the game in a 40 minute
slice and see if you still have the same problems with the web
interface. It is a very addicting game.

By the way, my captain name is Mystic in the game.

[Audyssey] the bonus level of monkey business

2009-10-02 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Spoiler
space
HI all
I am going to make a statement and then after that I will explain why I
made the statement.
Ok, so my statement is the following:
It was the intention of james north to make the bonus level of monkey
business impossible to play, even impossible to catch one monkey.
And there is good reasoning behind this.
The music that plays during the bonus level is from the movies
impossible mission. So the music tells you that the level is impossible,
its not a bug in the bonus level, james north wanted to make the bonus
game actually impossible. If it was not his intention to make the bonus
level impossible to play, he would have put other music in the bonus
level.
I know some people thinks that there is a bug in the bonus level, but
there actually isn't.
I think josh from draconis just ported everything to his website, he
just basically sells james north's titles.
It appears that josh never made any changes to james north's games.
So if you are new to monkey business and you are about to play the bonus
level for the first time, keep in mind that it is meant to be
impossible.

Hi Johnny,
I have an aversion to saving my game as I consider it is a way to turn a

very difficult game to a too easy one jus by saving before each
encounter.
I think the idea of saving games is worse than giving you all the
weapons in
the beginning.
If an attack is based on a random number such as a 20 sided dice, then
you
could roll the dice as many times as you need to get the magic 20 and
kill
the creature by saving the game before each attack.

[Audyssey] roling bolders in mota?

2009-10-02 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Hi tom
Do you plan to add roling bolders to mota?
It would be fun to try escape a roling bolder.
I think a good sound for a roling bolder is a sound similar to the
sound in ten pin alley, the sound of the ball rolling to the pins.
I do not expect you to use the sound in ten pin alley but a simular
sound would rock.

thomas, here's a suggestion.
on the first difficulties, angela could be alerted about the fire /

experienced, on the harder difficulties she don't say anything, so you
have to figure it out.
it sounds better in my opinion.
and i agree with clement.. make a combination of keys to look ahead /
behind you, so you don't need to press v, then see what you need. it's
faster.

[Audyssey] sryth

2009-09-11 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI all
Since I joined the blind gamers list in 2004, I read lots and lotsa bout
sryth, how people enjoy it.
I am considering it to try it out and maybe buy the subscription.
I would like to pose a few questions to the list.
1. is there any sound in sryth while you are playing?
2. how does game play actually work?
Do you have to click on links to perform actions or do you have to type
commands?
I am aware that I can possibly find documentation on the website but I
would like an experienced sryth gamer to answer my questions.

[Audyssey] brain teezer

2009-09-09 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Hello folks
Before we get down to the actual stuff, lets just give you all a little
disclaimer, shall we?
I strongly feel the following is on-topic for this list as I believe
strongly that riddles can also be classified as games and since this
list
discusses only accessible games to visually impaired, I feel that my
riddle
is indeed accessible to the vip, as you will use your screen reader to
read
my riddle and you will use your thinking abilities to try and decipher
the
riddle, so yes, this post is therefore considered by me as fully
ontopic.
all Right, now that the disclaimer is behind us, let this game begin!!
Put on your thinking caps, guys;
I'm only giving you one clue, and only just one clue.
THINK, LOGICALLY
I was not intending to shout, guys.
I just wanted to put the emphasis clearly.
Think, logically.
Ask yourself: just how logically can I think?
That's the only clue I'm giving you.
Ok, here is the riddle.
Who invented opticon?
Again guys, think logically.
I'm giving you all enough time to think about and post answers before I
give
the answer.
I will give the answer tomorrow afternoon 4:00 south African time.
But I will indeed proceed the answer with a spoiler space warning.
I just might be lenient enough to give you guys another clue during the
course of tomorrow if I see you struggle badly.
Oh no!
Do not tell me it will be another riddle to find out what time 4:00 p.m
south African time will be in your country!
Lol.
Anyway, that's it.

Re: [Audyssey] brain teezer

2009-09-09 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Ok, lets shed some light on the matter.
The optacon, if I spell it right, is a device used in the old days to
read something.
I'm not sure what you can read with the optacon.
If I'm not mistaken, I think you can put a sighted document such as a
book into it and then it will write the letters on your hand palm so
you put your hand inside it then it will write the letters on your hand
palm .You will not have sighted writing on your hand, it just makes the
pattorns on your hand.
You need to know how each sighted letter looks like in order to use
this machine. I do not know if it is still used today.
I hope this is not as clear as mud?
lol

[Audyssey] fw: pinky's revenge

2009-09-03 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Hi all
I was totally shocked when I got a very strange e-mail.
And I am dead serious, this is not a joke.
I really got this e-mail!
It follows:
- original message -
From: pi...@packman.com
Sent: Wednesday, september 02, 8:00 p.m
To: noosthui...@sars.gov.za
Subject: pinky's revenge
Hello nicol
I sit with a very ugly grin on my face as I am writing this e-mail.
I see you are having a very nice time with the sara game, ay?
Ghosts only takes little itsy bits of energy away if you are getting
touched by them.
And they are talking so nicely to you, telling you for instance that
they hope you get sorted into the huffle puf house.
I do not like this, rahrorrr!
I enjoy it when you quickly lose the game.
Mooo haaa haaa
So I went and tampered with the sarah game.
I hacked in on mister vlasak's server and I have tampered with the sarah
game. While you were surfing on the net, I hacked in on your computer
and got your I p address.
Then I hacked into mister vlasak's server and tampered with the sara
game in such a way that only you will lose the game quikly.
I tampered with the ssarah game in such a way that it will read your I p
address even though you are not on the net.
Other gamers are quite relaxed if they lose in pack man, so far it is
only you who gets frustrated when losing in pack man.
Mooo ha ha ha ha
Now the friendly hogwarts ghosts, will almost behave like us pack man
ghosts, on higher floors of hogwarts at least.
You have most probably already noticed this.
When you get touched by a ghost, whether you are in patronous mode or
not, the game restarts.
I actually made a bit of a mess, you know?
I did not intend that the game must restart if you touch a ghost when
you are in patronous mode. But well, no use crying over spilled pumpkin
juice, you know?
slight grin
But at least you lose the game very easily on higher floors of hogwarts.
That's how I like it!
So do not blame phil for this strange behavior that you are
experiencing.
I tampered with the sarah game.
Its not a bug on phil's side.
Its also not your computer lacking resources.
Its me, I tampered with the sarah game.
Now you certainly are going to ask me how I did it?
Mooo haaa haaa
Do you really think I am going to tell you, ay?
evil grin
Well, unfortunatly, I cannot get the sarah game ghosts to say things
that we pack mang ghosts say but at least now I know they will end the
game quickly just like we ghosts are doing in pack man.
I enjoy it when you bang your head against the wall of frustration, I
enjoy it when you are pulling at your hair.
That's how it should be!
Cheers
End of e-mail
Guys, I will not joke about something like this.
I really got this e-mail.
I am aware that the pack man ghosts is not real, probably an evil guy
out there trhying to do me and phil in.
I hope he can be traced and persecuted for what he did.
Mods and gamers, please believe me. This is not a joke.
This is real.
I really got the e-mail.
Please do not be surprised if you try to contact this bloke and the mail
bounce back to you.
He probably just set up this address to send me this nasty e-mail and
then he will most probably delete the e-mail address after sending the
mail successfully.
I know what question might be on your lips right now.
Nicol, How do you know that this evil dood are aware that you at some
time enjoyed the ssarah game a lot and that you are now getting
strange behavior in the sarah game?
Well, he most probably reads the archives of this list.

[Audyssey] the last crusade

2009-09-02 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI all
I suddenly remember of something weird happening in the audio game
called the last crusade.
Long ago I thought this is a bug but after reading the hp books, I now
know that this is not a bug at all.
When I manage to kill a Leprechaun in the game I get a pot of gold.
However, at a later stage in the game, I notice that my gold is
suddenly less than what it was when I killed the Leprechaun
The developer of the last crusade game, most likely took seriously what
was written in hp book4
The weasley twins gambled with mister crouch, but when they win, they
were given Leprechaun gold, which vanished after a while.
So this makes sense, why, in the last crusade game, the player suddenly
has less gold than before.
The developer most likely decided that Leprechaun gold in his game must
behave like in the hp books.

and in my opinion a text game is enough for having fun (in the

if you want something very similar to what you sayd, buy a ps2 thats
cheap and get smackdown2009, storymode, lots of types of matchs to

or if you have a ps3, buy ufc undisputed, very good game...

[Audyssey] the grey lady cannot behave propperly!

2009-09-01 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
filch passes the ravenclaw common room, and suddenly he stopped in
shock. dumbledor, headmaster of hogwarts, lies on the floor in the
ravenclaw common room, looking as if he is dead, his face cold and
pink. filch at once noticed waht happens. the ravenclaw ghost, the gray
lady, took all dumbledor's energy away from him. filch storms out of the
castle, roaring and making a very grunting noise. he furiously pounds on
hagrid's door. hagrid, open this ruddy door or I will break it open.
yeah yeah, commin, commin. the door slowly opens and hagrid's hairy
face appears in the door. sorry, just gotten up from bed, feelin ratter
tired, what's the mat ter? sorry for being rude, hagrid, but I
urgently need your flying motor cycle, I need to see the minister of
magic, mister fudge rather urgently. whats the maer? I spotted a
rather unpleasant sceen. dumbledor lies unconscious on the floor in the
ravenclaw common room. filch is not aware that sarah good, an intruder
into the hogwarts castle, changed into dumbledore with the polly juice
potion. but whatts he dooin in the common room? maybe one of the
students sent him an owel that they forgot their homework in the common
room and he wants to get it and send it to them, or maybe he just wants
to check if peeves haven't messed around in the common room, or maybe he
just wanted to look how the common room looks like. just paying it a
visit. yeah, yeah, you can borrow me bike. thanks, hagrid. filch
mounted the bike and its roaring sound filled the air. do ya know where
the minister of magic's office is located? yes thanks. filch soared
into the air, and disappeared from sight. he landed in front of the
building where mister fudge is working. he approached the receptionist
counter. urgently! is mister fudge available? I am here with terrifying
business. yes, come through please. the receptionist , a small plumpt
witch with bushy hair, escorted filch into the elevator and into
mister fudge's office. mister fudge, I have a guest for you, mister
argus filch, hogwarts caretaker. ah, filch, nice to see you. its been
a long time since the 2 of us had a chat. pumpkin juice or tea for you?
pumpkin jjuice please. the plumpy witch put a goblet full of pumpkin
juice in front of filch. so what's going on at hogwarts? cornelius, I
cannot stay long. I still have lots of cleaning duties and reports to
write. I just want to tell you of something terrifying that happend.
go ahead. dumbledor visited the ravenclaw common room for some reason
and he was attacked by the grey lady, she viciously took away all his
magical energy. mister fudge almost tore his clothes out of terror.
well, you can tell the grey lady she is no longer welcome in
hogwaarts. really? yes, she must leave immediately! and how are we
going to expel her if she refuses to leave herself? well, dumbledor is
a great wizard, he defeated grindlewald, I am sure he will deal with the
grey lady once he got his magical energy back. I doubt that he is
dead.go to honey dukes and get him lots of honey dukes best chocolate.
maybe he will get all his magical energy back quickly. thanks
cornelius, thanks a lot. have to go now. lots of work waiting for me, I
will tell the grey lady she is expelled., thanks for your time. nice
seeing you, filch. filch went down the elevator, thanked the
receptionist, and mounted hagrid's bike and soared off. he quickly
popped in to hagrid's hut. thanks lots, hagrid. here is your bike
back. wats happened? the gray lady is expelled for good. glad ter
hear that.
who knows? maybe phil can alter the gray lady's behavior before she gets
expelled.I think he may need a time turner necklace.
I will send him one by owel post.

[Audyssey] dobby's mistake

2009-09-01 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
~Filch had a little girl of eight years old.
Venessa was her name.
Like her father she is a muggle, going to a muggle school also.
Well, her dad does not bring her to the castle usually, he is afraid
she will get in danger. He's afraid she will explore too much and find
herself face to face with fluffy for example.
Anyway, little Venessa came with her father to the Hogwarts castle this
summer holiday. Her father allowed her to explore certain parts of the
castle. The forbidden forest, the forbidden corridor, murtle's bathroom
and the dungens was forbidden territory for little venessa.
Venessa was a sweet, obedient little girll, her father never have
trouble with her if he gave her instructions.
Well, so it happendt that little venessa approached the fruit bowl in
the basement. Fortunately, her father was nearby, cleaning.
Daddy, may I visit the kitchen please?
Yes, lovy, just tickle the pair with your forefinger.
So little venessa tickeld the pair and went into the kitchen.
There in the kitchen she found the most terrifying sceen.
Dobby the houseelve shut his ears in the oven.
First of all little venessa said stunned. who are you and secondly,
what are you doing?
Dobby opened the oven door, his ears glowing red and full of little
knobs filled with water.
I think they're called water bladders.
I'm dobby. Dobby sobbed.
I'm one of the houseelves. I am working in the kitchen of Hogwarts
together with 100 other elves.
and why are you shutting your ears in the oven? little venessa asked
with great eyes? the famous sarah good, top in her class at salem
witches institute, came to visit Hogwarts, and she visited the elves
living quarters. She didn't disturb any of my colleagues whom were
sleeping.
Well, she used the mirror I gave her down in the basement, and stupid
dobby did not give sarah butter beer or socks.
I just told her the usual stuff, to find more magical items on the next
floor. Etc.
Dobby is turning his ears to the oven again.
I'm going to tell my daddy that there is an intruder in the castle!
Litttle venessa squeaked.
dobby is begging missie not to breath a word that sarah is in the
castle. Sarah is famous and should not be treated as an intruder.
well dobby, please do not punish yourself, man. I am sure sarah can go
to hogsmead if she wants to taste butter beer.
Dobby yawned.
so where is all the students? Little venessa asked with big eyes.
they are all on holidays, it's the summer holidays.
As far as dobby am aware, Students are only permitted in Hogwarts during
the christmass holidays.
During the summer holidays, filch told dumbledor, he wants them to
leave as he wants to get some breath back and do his cleaning stuff in
peace.
oh, and where is famous harry potter? Venessa asked.
harry potter is with his hostile aunt and her husband. Dobby sighed.
why cannot he stay with serious black, his god father?
Dobby hopped 5 feet in the air.
your daddy tells you kinda dark stuff going on here!
well dumbledor wants to protect harry from voldemort that is why
Dumbledore prefers harry to stay with muggles in the summer holidays.
As far as dobby understands, the dursleys is the only muggles that can
look after harry.
venessa! Venessa dear, come, lets go to honey dukes., I am at long
last finished with cleaning all these corridors.
Honey dukes! squealed little venessa.
Sounds like fun!
that is the sweet shop in hogsmead.
oh, I love sweets. Daddy has a struggle keeping away sweets from me
before mealtime and early in the mornings.
Well, I better get moving now. Enjoy your holiday dobby and do not
punish yourself. Dobby just waits for little venessa to disappear
through the fruit bowl, when he shuts his ears again in the oven.

[Audyssey] a very frustrating bug in the sarah game

2009-08-31 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI all
I have mentioned this several times privatley to phil, but I understand
fully if he does not respondaat this time as he is very busy.
I just wanted to know if anybody experience the same bug.
This didn't happen on the easy difficulty.
If memory serves, the bug started occuring on the first or second floor
of hogwarts. Each and every contact with a ghost and the program
restarts.
let me explain this very clearly.
When you, the player, awoke lets say 8:00 in the morning, lets say on a
saturday, and you had your first cup of coffee and you decided to
start the day with some hogwarts adventure. You switch on your pc, and
then on the desktop, you either hit a hot key to launch the sarah game
if you have created one or you click on the desktop icon or the icon in
your programs menu, whichever way .
Then once you launched sarah, you hear chimes, it will play until you
hit enter. Then the pcs logo plays, like the manual says you can
interrupt any logo with control.
So its first the pcs logo, then the draconis logo and then the sarah
theme song.and Then you are in the main menu.
Now, when I get touched by any ghost, the same thing happens that
happens if you launch sarah.
I hear chimes, it plays until I hit enter, then it plays the pcs logo,
the draconis logo and the sarah theme song, and I'm placed in the main
menu.
This is so frustrating, but I'm not cross with phil as I realize phil is
working his fingers blunt to develop sarah.
But for me, the player, this bug frustrates the living wax out of me.
Even if I touch a ghost while in patronous mode, the program restarts.
the only difference is, while the launching chimes plays, I still hear
the patronous music.
if I press enter and the pcs logo plays, the patronus music stops.
It even happens some time that when I stun a ghost, the program also
restarts. It does not happen that often, but what happens mostly is
that any contact with a ghost, and the program restarts whether in
patronous mode or not.
The program also restarts if sarah hits the baselisk with the griffindor
sword, and of course this was all mentioned to phil privatley.
also, while sarah is in the lake, if she get attacked by mur people, the
program also restarts.
the level where this bug is really making me mad is in the head master's
office, because peeves attacks sarah more often here than in any other
level. so I get touched by peeves very often and so the program
restarts the whole time and when I load my saved position in the
headmaster's office, no matter where in the headmaster's office I was
when saving, if I load my saved game, sarah goes up the automatic
staircase.
so I have to wait a while each time for sarah to go up the stair case
and then shortly thereafter, peeves attacks sarah again and the program
restarts again.thus an entire hour went by, where the program
restarts each time peeves touches sarah.
lastly , the program restarts when sarah is touched by a bludger.
on the easy difficulty, this did not happen.
the program behaved normally on the easy difficulty
where the bludger would hit sarah if it gets in contact with her and
take some energy away.
but now on the standard difficulty, when a bludger touches sarah, the
program restarts.
I desperatley hope this can be fixed in the coming update.
I will uninstall the game and then instal it again and install the
latest patch and see if that helps.

[Audyssey] the beach level of monkey business

2009-08-25 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI all

I want to share something with you which I have picked up.

So let me start this post with a

Possible

Big

Spoiler

In case this is a spoiler to anyone.

Those of you who read the manual of monkey business, will remember that
the manual said, there is a monkey on the ship firing a cannon. Well, I
have done an experiment.

After catching all the monkeys on the beach, I head over to the ship
and catch the monkey on the ship .

So I went down to the beach again, and guess what?

If I get near the ocean, the cannon still fires cannon balls at me.

So there is a slight correction josh have to make in the manual.

It appears that no monkey is in fact firing the cannon.

The cannon is firing the cannon balls by itself.

Its just something to thinka bout.

[Audyssey] super liam versus danger city

2009-08-05 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
HI liam and all

My compliments goes to liam for creating a really comfortable game.

I played danger city again last night and its really next to impossible.

And the bad thing is.

Eventually I managed to complete act3 but the bomb still went off.

I heard the intro to level2 which does not exist, but at the same time
I heard a mine in front of me which means there is a big bug in the
game.

For those of you who haven't played danger city, level2 is where the
character meets an elderly man who is about to tell him how to start his
new mission.

And the game character is walking in water.

And then a car passes.

The sound of a land mine is not suppose to be there.

Although I like the sound of the land mines its much more difficult to
jump over a land mine in ddanger city than it is to jump over
obstacles in super liam.

And the game gives me enough time to complete the escape levels such as
the volcano and water escape.

Thus super liam is light years easier and more comfortable than danger
city.

 Well done liam.

[Audyssey] the bonus games in alien outback

2009-08-05 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
Hi all

I am just curious.

Those of you who play alien outback.

What is the most difficult level where you were able to get to the bonus
round without any landers?

I can only get a bonus game after level1, perhaps level2 but no further
than that.

From level3 onwards the ships descend so quickly that there is no chance
to have no landers.

Last Sunday I have discovered something.

This is just my personal experience.

I do not know about the nukes, but if you shoot a ship by means of a
missile, then you won't be able to go to the bonus round.

I had no landers on the whole of level1 and I shot quite a number of
ships with missiles and I did not go through to the bonus game.

I was taken straight to level2.

So I just have a feeling its because I used missals.

If anyone were able to get a bonus game after level3 or higher, its much
appreciated if you can share your strategy with me to get no landers.

Re: [Audyssey] super liam versus danger city

2009-08-05 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen
All right! All right!
Let me rephrase.
Level2 does not exist, but once you complete act3 of level1 you hear
the intro to level2.
In other words, you hear the game character walking in water and then
you hear an elderly man speaking to the game character and then you hear
a car passing by.
Then the synth voice says:intro level2 act1 and then the program exits.
That is what I meant.

Hi Charles,
Yes, he did. He gave me lots of documentation as far as program
outlines, his notes, etc. I also found James North to be a fairly decent

Visual Basic programmer. I think my only complaint was that he was using

Visual Basic 6 instead of Visual Basic .NET, and the fact he created
this graphical level editor that was completely unaccessible. Thus
requiring me to rewrite the project in any case.

[Audyssey] huge huge frustration with the x1 battle

HI all

I enjoy super liam, it's a cool game.

Its just the final act that frustrates me.

My left arrow key does not work when trhying to jump left.

I can successfully jump with the right arrow key but when I press up
arrow and I tap the left arrow multiple times, super liam falls down a
hole.

And I am sure that the left arrow key on my keyboard is working because
I was able to use it throughout the whole game, and I can also use my
left arrow key successfully when doing anything else on my pc such as
navigating in a document.

I made sure I am on the second metal step before I jump.

I've tried the x1 battle for hours, but now I need help please.

Re: [Audyssey] New rhythm-action audio game. Need some testers to help with research project.

2007-06-18 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen

NB: This email and its contents are subject to our email legal notice
which can be viewed at http://www.sars.gov.za/Email_Disclaimer.pdf

Hi Daniel
I tried out both games.
I will reply inline to your questions.
Were the instructions helpful in teaching you how to play the games?
Oh yes,, very clear.
How long did it take you to have a good understanding of how to play
each version of the game?
Not long at all. When playing the first time I understood it already.
Which version, FingerDance1 or FingerDance2, was easier to play and why?
I find both versions tricky.
But I prefer version1 because my ear is tuned into drums much better
than to sliding sounds. I can react quicker to drum rolls.
I sometimes find that when I press the correct letter I still hear an
error sound. A fraction of a second after *I heard the high drum sound
in the left speaker for instance, I press q but then I hear an error
sound. This only happens sometimes. Some times if I press the correct
letter a fraction of a second after that specific drum roll I hear the
clap sound, but sometimes itplays the error sound.
I further suggest that after the drum roll played and there is about 2
seconds silence on the left that the game should still accept the
letter I press. IN other words: I hear a high drum roll on the left,
then I hear say 2 drum rolls from the right and then one from the left
again, so while that 2 drums rolls in the right speaker are playing, I
should be able to press the one that played on the left.
I hope my explanation is clear.
If you played each game more than once, what was your score the first
time you played it and what was your score the last time you played it?
The score will be spoken at the end of the game in terms of a ranking.
For example, you score could be terrible, pretty good, very good, or
incredible.
My first score was terrible; my last score was not very good.
Were the games fun and/or interesting?
Oh yes, these kind of games improves my reaction time and also hand ear
coordination.
Do you think that the gameplay ideas presented by FingerDance could be
used to make a fun Rhythm-Action audio game that you would like to play?
Oh yes.
If you could, how would you improve these games?
My suggestion here is that you create a game that will test the gamer's
reaction to various keystrokes. It can work like this: while the song is
playing, a voice speaks different keystrokes such as letters, numbers,
punctuation keys as well as hot keys such as shift+down arrow. And then
you only have a few seconds to press that keystroke before the next one
is spoken.

No, backgammon is different. You start with fifteen pieces, as does
your
opponent. Your goal is to get all of your pieces home before your
opponent does. You get to move your pieces based on the results of die
rolls. If one of your pieces lands on a single piece of your opponents,
your opponent's piece gets sent back to the beginning, and has to start
toward home all over again. Of course, the same is true if your
opponent
lands on one of your single pieces.

To avoid this, you try to make sure that more than one of your pieces
occupies a space. If there are two or more pieces of the same color on
a
space, then the opponent can't land on that space.

There's more, but those are the basics of the game.

What is the possibility for a backgammon game? That would be a lot of
fun.
I don't think there's one out there already.

Just wondering.

I'll contact Bsc and Vip gameszone about their respective games, --

 Hi Dark,
Most developers I know such as GMA, PCS, and BSC will allow you to
have
a second key for your laptop.
As for myself for a while I had a Windows desktop PC running games,
and a set of keys for my laptop. Of course, the games weren't being
used
at the same time, but I explained what I wanted and got a second setof
 keys for my laptop.
It all really depends on the developer in question. There may be a dev
or two who will not give out extra keys, but most you will find are
 pretty flexible.

HI all
I think its possible to create a trivial persuit game using jaws
scripts.
If you want a question where the user have to type in the answer you
can use the input box function.
Use the dlg select item in list function if you want multi choice
questions.
In that way you can have a trivia game with both questions where the
user have to give the answer as well as multi choice questions.
Then you can use say string statements to tell the user where on the

Multiple phrasing of answers
By using if statements you can include that.

ElIf user types the train leaving for hogwarts school, say string
correct.
ElIf user types: train leaving from platform 9 and 3 quarters, say
string correct.

Hello

Hi Thomas,

I don't know, I think a trivial pursuit game or a Jeopardy type game is
going to be more work than you realize. I mean first you are going to
need a data base of questions and answers and then the string matching
is not really going to be all that easy. I know that it has been done
of course, but even when playing PC Jeopardy with sighted help it will
give you an incorrect even though you essentially had the correct
answer. Maybe just misspelled or not complete or even too much, not
phrased the way the game was looking for etc etc.

[Audyssey] self destruct cheet codes

2007-05-25 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen

Listen here, there is definitely something very weird about my
subscription of my home e-mail address. It looks like I have to
unsubscribe my home address and re-subscribe it.
I have e-mailed thom privately and he said he doesn't believe I'm on
moderated status. Yesterday night I e-mailed the list about the self
destruct cheet codes and once again my post didn't reach the list for
sure.
Thanks for telling me about the cheet codes, dark. But I can't get it
to work. I'm using version 1.1.6 of sd. The users guide says press
control+c to use a cheet.
So what I did just to test it. I copied the text of the cheet code
surrounded by quotes exactly from the website, I started self destruct
up and when I was in the game I pressed control+c, I pasted everything
with control+v and I hit enter and nothing happens. I'm just put back in
the game WITHOUT ACTIVATING ANY CHEET. I tried the level select cheet.
I copied it exactly from the website.
What am I doing wrong that it doesn't work?
thanks

H, sounds like a nasty bug there Nicol.

As you say, probably the best thing you can do is just fight the urchin

Luckily, you can type in the level select cheat code for the game.

just type ahh this is boring! and a level select menue should turn up

you can go streight to level 10 (remember the double H in ahh).

Ok guys, now for the new bug I have came across while fighting the
 urchin
lord. When reaching the teleporter I saved my game so that if I die on
the
urchin lord battle I can just start self destruct again and load my
game
 on
that point where I'm in the teleporter room.
I've always been able to easily kill the urchin lord regardless of
which
 experience level I'm on. It's a 20 by 20 battle field. If I stand
either
 on
 the top left corner, i.e 1 1 or in the middle i.e 10 10 and I hold
down my

drains me of a lot of health but eventually it dies.
But the last time when I fight the urchin lord a weird thing
happened.
 The
urchin lord's hp went below 0 to a negative figure. I was checking
the
urchin lord's hp after fighting it for a while. Sappi says his hp is
60.
When I checked again it said: the urchin lord has negative 150 hp.
Does anyone know why this happened? The only thing that goes down
below
 0
to a negative figure is weather temprature. If the urchin lord's hp
 reaches
0 it is suppose to die. This really isn't suppose to happen.
I might be able to kill the urchin lord if I start all

 over
again from level1. this is just very weird that his health goes to a
 negative figure.

[Audyssey] I'm giving phil the go ahead to create a game with harry as character

Phil, my friend, go ahead and create a game with harry and friends as
characters if you wish. You don't need to be afraid of getting into hot
water for copyright infringement. Let me proof my statement. Someone
from south Africa went and wrote his own harry potter books using some
content of jk rowling. My colleague told me that harry wade his way
through a rose garden with a sword. The rowling books proofs this wrong
as harry only used a sword to kill the basilisk. My sister-in-law told
me that her friend's kid watched harry potter movies and that harry's
friends's names is the names of demons. The harry potter books from jk
rowling once again proofs this wrong as the weesley children, Neville
longbottom and hermien was harry's only friends. So this is why I feel
so strong about it. If its too much work for you to change the
character to harry and his friends, then I understand if you prefer not
to do it but if you are only afraid to get into hot water, my friend,
there's no reason to be afraid. You just tell the person that
approaches you, that someone from south africa commited bigger
copyright infringement than you for he wrote his own harry potter story.
If you prefer not to use harry and friends as characters because of the
fact that he is after voldemort's horcruxes, I do understand it, but the
point that I just wanted to make is: Phil doesn't need to be afraid of
getting into hot water because an unknown dood from south africa has
commited bigger copy right infringement than phil.
If I find out who did that, I will report him to Joanne rowling.

Thanks phil.
I learnt something new today. So if I understand the members' correctly,
the south African harry potter stories which are different from the
original jk rowling books is fan fiction and there's nothing wrong with
fan fiction?
I didn't mean to intimidate you, you have your reasons for keeping the
character sarah and I do understand it clearly.
I understand your reasons completely, and also the fact that harry have
to find voldemort's horcruxes, it won't make sense for harry to
explore the castle. He already knows the castle very well, sarah
doesn't so it adds more meaning to the game if the character doesn't
know the castle.

Hi Nicol,
I thought about doing a game with Harry Potter as the main character but
did
not do it for several reasons.
1. I wanted to base it on exploring the Hogwarts castle and when Harry
is at
the school, so are about a thousand students and teachers.
Electronic Arts has the budget to record 1,500 different voices for
their
Harry Potter game but I do not.
That is why the game occurs during the Summer Holidays so there would
be
less work in creating it.
2. I thought the way I finally did the game would be closer to fan
fiction
than ripping off the Electronic Arts sounds so I did not use their
sounds or
anything for the Sarah game.
3. I wanted to make a game exploring Hogwarts but since it would be very

close to Shades of Doom, I made it different by having a female rather
than
a mail character and by making the game less of a killing spree than an
exploration game that is rare in the blind game arena.
4. I decided on having a female American as the main character since
Sarah
agreed to record the script and no teenage British boy did.
Phil

Hi Nicol,

There is a type of boss fight in the Sara game, which is Sarah against
the
2 bludgers.
But I can imagine the young voldemort deciding that the diary might not
do
and having him putting a bit of himself in something in the castle that
comes alive.
Mix the way the chess pieces were animated with the way the portraits
talk
and think and you might have a close representation of a boss.
The only thing this robot voldemort could not do is cast spells.
Or how about if voldemort took over the brain of a House-Elf?
I think I will wait until book seven is released to speculate on what
else
is in the castle to find.

IN the sixth hp book, dumbledor and harry aparated to find a horcrux.
They were in hogsmead and they aparated to the sea and that cave was the
ante chamber if I understand correctly. The book says there's an
entrance hall and ante chamber in the cave.
So why did you put the ante chamber on the ground floor of the castle
if the ante chamber is in the book a place very far from the castle? so
far that they had to Aparate.

[Audyssey] treasure mania suggestion

2007-05-03 Thread Nicol Oosthuizen

NB: This email and its contents are subject to our email legal notice
which can be viewed at http://www.sars.gov.za/Email_Disclaimer.pdf

HI rob and all
I have this thing of certain sounds in games that frightens me. Not
frightening such as being scared, more like a shock. Any sudden loud
sound gives me that sudden fright. Such a sound is the sound that
plays when an arrow kills you. Is it possible to put another sound in
there?
The thing is: I'm busy experimenting with this dugging. Its eems that,
sometimes, not always, just sometimes, you can press control once and
then you are free from arrows hitting you. But that only happens
sometimes and when I expect it the least that arrow hits me and the
sound really frightens me. I remember reading a post long ago where a
member said the sound of bees frightens him in the tj game, so sounds
in games that frightens us is something common.
I'm not the only gamer that gets frightened by sounds.
I must say: I'm very impressed with the yelling sound in the new sod. I
have played the demo of 1.0, I haven't upgraded from 1.0 to 1.2. I
played the demo of 1.0 and then when 1.2 was released I also played that
demo and liked it more. But with 1.0, if you are busy fighting a
creature, your character suddenly gives the death cry, just all of a
sudden and that frightened me that I feel like going through my house'
roof. But with 1.2 there is a slight pause when your character dies
before it gives the death cry. If I'm in a fight and my health drops to
0, I notice my spacebar suddenly does nothing and then a second later I
hear the death cry, so that is really a rocking improvement.
The impact sound when I'm hit is also a nice improvement in sod.
The treasure mania game rocks, its just that sound of the arrow hitting
me that gives me a sudden shock.
Its the same when you are sitting in your room and you are busy
studying and all of a sudden you hear a door banging. That sudden loud
sound can be frightening, isn't it? I would prefer rather a lazar sound
when an arrow hits me. You can keep the sound as it is when the arrow is
on its way to me, I would just like the sound when the arrow hits me
to change.
If its possible to change it, its greatly appreciated, but if it can't
be done I understand.Just a little suggestion I thought of dropping in.
Happy fish ing and treasure hunting

Hay phil
Is the sarah game based on the sixth harry potter book as well?
Can anyone explain to me why death eaters are so called? I have read a
lot about them in the hp books, they are voldemort's followers, but I
still can't understand why they are called death eaters. Do they eat
the people they murdered or do they eat the condition of death itself?
Phil, in the story line behind the game, sarah bought a headless hat at
the weesley joke shop.
So that means that george and fred met sarah? IN the sarah manual it
says that sarah had a chat with one of the owners of the weesley joke
shop, and the owner told sarah it would be a fantastic experience to
visit the castle. so was sarah talking to one of the twins?
Mods, please please don't be cross with me about this post. I really
don't know of any other list where harry potter books are discussed, so
guys please reply to me off-list if its not game related, I'm just so
immersed into the harry potter books, I just want to give my 2 sense
about snape.
You know its very ridiculous to think that a death eater gave lessons.
IN Afrikaans we have an expression: he's a wire sitter. The one moment
he supports voldemort as death eater and the next moment he stands
innoscently on the podium as if nothing in the world happened. I think
harry was too soft. I think when snape told him he's going to give
harry oclemensey lessons, harry should have told him in his face:
I'm sorry, I'm not going to take lessons with a death eater. I'm only
taking lessons with upright people who doesn't support voldemort.
I can't believe it that harry was so soft, that he respected snape. If
I were harry, I would have refused to take any lessons with a death
eater. I think snape was a hypocrite!

Lets see if I can remember book4. The only critical thing harry needed
for which he used the achio spell was his broom. Fighting the Hungarian
dragon was the first tri wizard tournament task. Only his wand was
allowed so he used the achio spell to get his broom to him.
So that means that the moment sarah gets near to the Hungarian dragon
she will also in some strange way loose her broom and have to get it
with the achio spell? Will sarah also have to pick up the golden egg?

Subject: [Audyssey] Sarah game changes in patch 3

Hi Folks,
In the new Sarah game patch, number 3,
here are the changes in no particular order:

I did not want you to go down to
the dungeon without getting at least 4 magic items.
That is why I originally put a minimum on the secret passage too.
Of course you had to get at least two to get to the first floor.
So now the object list comes up if you have not picked up enough of
them,
but I do not say how many you need to open the door.

The goblin now wears shoes so you will hear him walking
and the Caretaker too.

I've improved the accio spell,
and it now can get something that was critical
in the fourth Harry Potter book.

I added the spell that creates a burning x in the air.
When you walk away and walk back and get
within five feet of the mark you will hear a fire sound and sara saying
x 1 for the first mark and so on.

I fixed some of the headless hats,
so you can now pick them up.

I made the door snore sound louder.

I added an adjusted passwords list to each floor
so you only get the ones you can use.

I made more use for the burning and fire putting out spells.
They now put out and light all fireplaces and torches.
Plus there is now a reason to put out some of the fireplace fires
since they may reveal things not noticed before.

I have fixed the basilisk sword attacks so
the dead basilisk does not land on you,
and does not crash the game.

I added a new corridor connecting the east and west segments of the
basement.

I changed the name of the password from Hilga to Helga.

I added a picture over the Ravenclaw fireplace.
It was already in the game just not described.

If Sarah drops her racing broom while still using it she falls and
loses magical energy.
Note to use the broom you must hit enter on it from the inventory.
To get off the broom you repeat this procedure.
To drop the broom you hit d on it in the inventory.
Be careful when flying on the Quidditch pitch and dropping your broom
while on it, since this will now be very bad.

I added a cash register sound when buying candy

Since I had to change all the floors

 Oh tar damian.

Perhaps by the time it's ready I will have recording sorted so that I
 won't
need to play on speakers and can reccord stuff in 3D, so maybe a
casting
 of
the pod about the game might be possible.

A small learn game sounds menue deffinately sounds like a plan.

good luck with the developement, I'm pleased to here things are
 progressing,
even slowly, - I always think about the Tortoise in the parable
in
 these
situations! and as Sarah, and final conflict recently both showed me,

 it's
 a
good thought to have, sinse games can be well worth the wait in the
end.

 Hi Damian.

As Phil says, it all depends upon the complexity of the game,
 especially
 if
it's 3D and involves targiting and the like or many different types
of
 enemy.

I'd stil personally advise keeping it minimal though even in these
 cases
 so
there is stil a surprise and exploration element. I thought the
menue
 in
Sarah was absolutely perfect, sinse it gave you all the tools you
need
 to
start the game and not get confused, but there is stil more than
enough
 to
discover for yourself, even for a game exploration nut like me.

Btw Damian, I'd be highly interested in beta testing work on bomb
 blaster
 if
you'd like (the game certainly sounds fun).

Of course, I'm sure lots of other people here would be interested
in
applying for positions on the beta team as well, so it'll all
depend
 upon
how you decide to handle beta tester applications etc.

 Beware the Grue!

 Dark.

i've been following this list's opinions on learn game sounds

 then.
do you think i should put any sort of learn game sounds in bomb
 blaster?
currently there isn't one but if people want it it's easily added,
but
through my understanding on what i've just read people aren't
really
 bothered about such a menu.

Its as easy as achio and harry would have get his wand back, now poor

Well, wy did hermien then not use the summoning charm? She visited harry

harry later on to use the summoning charm in preparation in fighting

I don't know if you read the entire book yet but I believe Harry didn't
know
the charm at the time yet. And this brings me to something I've noticed
that
might be a possible bug in Sarah.
Phil, you state in the manual that if Sarah drops her magic wand, she
won't
be able to focus her magical energy any more. I understand this so that
she
shouldn't be able to perform any spells that require the wand. So,
although
she should still be able to apparate, check her direction facing or
perhaps
perform the summoning charm, as I am sure they've performed that without

wands in their hands in the HP series, she shouldn't be able to stupefy
anyone or cast a patronus, etc. However, I can do all sort of magic even

without a wand with no difficulty. I'm just making sure I understood
everything right?
Thanks,
Lukas

the howler is not as worse as i expected it. i expected that sarah's mom
is
going to scream like sarah would scream if she runs into the boggart
without
any charm protecting her. Since the manual indicates that only sarah's
father is in the game I thought he would  really scream, but he didn't;
he
just talked loudly as like over a huge sound syhstem or intercom.
You don't need to get all the magical items to get the howler. I got the
nimbus broom although it doesn't count as a magical item, then I got the
floot and glass ball, the necklace and old parchment and the pen knife.
My
time ran out before I could get the wand from the hufflepuff room. I
first
got the old parchment with the achio charm, then I went to the kitchen
and
collected the pen knife there, then I came to the staff room and took
the
necklace and then I took the floot and rememberal from the 2 classrooms
and
at that moment I heard the owel and I heard the sound of fire crackling
so I
think phil portrayed the red envelope smoking at the corners well.
However, I think one should be able to open the howler in sarah before
it
explodes, because I have read in the fourth hp book that one of harry's
friends or himself, I can't remember whom, said you must open the
howler
before it explodes.
That was when howlers was sent complaining about the kwiditch match.
If memory serves its chapter4, mayhem in the ministry. So that means
that in
the wizardry world, people could open howlers before they explode.
Sarah's father's voice sounds cool through the howler, I just thought
maybe
if sarah could open the howler before it explodes it would then read the
letter in another voice. Can any one tell me what did happened if
someone
in the wizardry world opened a howler before it explodes?
If the answer lies in books 5 and 6, rather don't say anything as I
want to
read up on it. I'm now busy reading where harry is in the prefect's
bathroom busy with the golden egg where his leg got stuck in the trick
step where snape and mooddy came across him.

Hi nicol,
Yes I do have a death day party in the dungeon but I do not say who's it
is.
Since you will probably ask who it is, it can't be Nick or Myrtle or
Binns
since they all happened during the school year.
So I will make it the Fat Fryer's party.
Hmm, now did I put him in that level or not?
Anyway I would not recommend Sarah eating that food but it does have a

Hay phil
I can remember a while ago you said one who doesn't read the hp books
will find it very hard to find the chamber of secrets. Well I don't
think so.
Its very easy. Locate moaning murtil's bathroom and look for a little
snake scratched on the side of a copper tap. I believe the sarah voice
would announce something like little snake. Then use the open up
password.
Its not hard at all.
I only sent my money for sarah today, but from what I read in book2
chapter16 it doesn't seem hard at all to find the chamber of secrets.

Oh no,
A player who didn't read the books would enter murtil's bathroom and
hear something like:
Snake, snake, snake, snake, snake,
Getting louder as the player moves to it, then he would tried out all
the passwords and go down with the open up password.
I believe the same thing happens with the snakes curved into the stone,
one would also use the open up password.

read in the first hp book that the rememberal was delivered by owl post
while the students were having breakfast and harry received the floot

He visited harry in his room while his parents had guests. He asked
harry over and over not to go back to Hogwarts. If sarah aught to be
strictly harry potter based, then dobby should also try to keep sarah
away from the castle.
When sarah enters the basement, dobby should, instead of offering her

should leave the castle.. If sarah walks down the staircase to the
basement, dobbie should Aparate to her and say something like:

then disappear again. When I battled a lot to understand the fake
