[Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Philip Bennefall
Hi all,

Recently I have been making some drastic changes to the BGT core. As many of
you will know, most audio games today use a technology known as DirectSound to
output audio. BGT is no exception. Until about 3 years ago DirectSound was the
interface of choice for all Windows based games. It has been around since 1995,
and has become rather stable over the years. However, Microsoft are now pushing
developers away from DirectSound as it is being replaced by a new audio engine
called XAudio2. XAudio2 provides much greater flexibility when it comes to low
latency audio processing, and is an over-all better system than DirectSound.
However, in order for XAudio2 to work reliably I have found that the end users
need to run at least the June 2010 release of Direct X 9. It is also necessary
for users of Windows 7 service pack 1 to upgrade in a few cases.

So my question to you all is this. In the next BGT release, would you like me
to switch to XAudio2? This will give much better performance on Windows Vista
and 7 as compared to DirectSound, but should be about the same on Xp. However,
the games simply will not run if the user has anything earlier than Direct X
June 2010 installed and it will force them to upgrade. Do I maintain two
versions of the engine for a while, a DirectSound and an XAudio2 build, or are
we okay to switch immediately? This is what I would like to ask you all before
I make a final decision.

Thanks for reading.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Shaun,

BGT games will not need to be changed at all, but end users will need the
June 2010 version of Direct X in order to play them. XAudio2 does not
support panning natively, however the programmers I hired to write the port
of Streemway from DirectSound to XAudio2 have found a way to change the
volume of individual speakers. I have then extended this myself so that now,
panning works 100 % the same as in DirectSound. In other words, not only
will there be no change necessary to existing code but there will also not
be any difference whatsoever in the positioning of sounds in stereo. This is
not a pan simulation in 3d, this is exactly the same behavior as DirectSound
exposes.

well switch if you can.
It does mean panning will have to have 3d encoding but tom did manage
it in mota once and it was not to bad.
of cause that probably means that every bgt game created will
probably not work anymore.
I guess you could keep legacy stuff around is it possible to have
both loads and then people can use either function set?
Eventually like anything direct sound will probably dissapear but for
now there are a lot of people that still play with it and use it.
Though
I am no programmer and don't know how game code would have to change.
if it just means the files change but the code is the same with more
options and such then thats fine with me.

Hi Phil,

The best way to make sure you're up to date is to run the Direct X Web
Installer from Microsoft, but I can certainly provide this on my website as
well for people to download. I will also include it if I ever make a
Blastbay Games CD.

Now, that's something I've never liked on my pizza. I Detest
anchovies. However, I definitely like sossage, peparoni, olives if you

[Audyssey] ESP Pinball Classic

2011-03-04 Thread Lori Duncan
Hi I used to have a game of pinball when I was really small, just a horrid
plastic one, but I didn't understand the rules. What I'm wondering is are
there any recordings or trails for the ESP Pinball out there, so I can listen

Isn't the point of pinball that you move the ball and it lands on certain

it? Sorry for being very dim on this one, but it would help if someone could
explain it a bit for me. Thanks from Lori.

 hi.
You may have seen my posts on the ag forum about this and other
codefactory games.
Due to issues with the protection system mangling things for
one of these and my dislike of another I have decided to leave them alone.

However in time adventures I have just just come back from the market.
The game thinks the baskets are to take therefore there must be a use.
But either I am missing a command or I am being a stupid idiot
or something, what exactly do I do now, how do I access my food in
the baskets to cook with.

[Audyssey] time adventures

2011-03-04 Thread shaun everiss

Hi all
well I finally completed time adventures1.
Its a pitty codefactory stopped making games as I think there are
more than one story to tell in this series.

I finally figured out the issues I was having.
The game takes some time depending on where you are to refresh bits and bobs.
Eventually I got it working.
This is good because after private detective school and the fact I
did not like km1000 there was alien invasion and this one left.

And I am happy I can at least keep 2 of my downloads, since they were large.

based games. It has been around since 1995, and has become rather
stable over the years. However, Microsoft are now pushing developers
away from DirectSound as it is being replaced by a new audio engine
called XAudio2. XAudio2 provides much greater flexibility when it
comes to low latency audio processing, and is an over-all better
system than DirectSound. However, in order for XAudio2 to work
reliably I have found that the end users need to run at least the
June 2010 release of Direct X 9. It is also necessary for users of
Windows 7 service pack 1 to upgrade in a few cases.

So my question to you all is this. In the next BGT release, would
you like me to switch to XAudio2? This will give much better
performance on Windows Vista and 7 as compared to DirectSound, but
should be about the same on Xp. However, the games simply will not
run if the user has anything earlier than Direct X June 2010
installed and it will force them to upgrade. Do I maintain two
versions of the engine for a while, a DirectSound and an XAudio2
build, or are we okay to switch immediately? This is what I would
like to ask you all before I make a final decision.

hired to write the port of Streemway from DirectSound to XAudio2
have found a way to change the volume of individual speakers. I have
then extended this myself so that now, panning works 100 % the same
as in DirectSound. In other words, not only will there be no change
necessary to existing code but there will also not be any difference
whatsoever in the positioning of sounds in stereo. This is not a pan
simulation in 3d, this is exactly the same behavior as DirectSound exposes.

 Hi everyone,

I know I told a lot of you that Mysteries of the Ancients beta 18
would be done about the end of February. A lot of you have started
asking questions off list what is going on, why isn't the beta ready,
etc and I thought I'd make a quick public announcement explaining
where we stand on things. As so often happens with creating accessible
games as a side venture in our free time real life problems and
issues simply get in the way. This case is no different.

Around a week ago my wife got really sick. We took her to the hospital
where they gave her some antibiotics, and strict orders to stay in bed
for seven to ten days until she felt well enough to get out of bed.
As a result I've had to take over all of the house hold duties such as
cooking, cleaning, and doing simple tasks like fetching my wife a
glass of water when she needs to take a pill etc. The end result of
all of this is absolutely no time to work on MOTA at all. So our beta
18 release schedule is pretty much shot to pieces.

So here is the thing. I could go ahead and release beta 18 now, as is,
but it isn't complete so to speak. Most of the upgrades are done,
level 1 has been updated, but we don't yet have level 2 added to the
demo. So it is really your choice if you want to wait a few days for
me to add level 2 to the game, when I have the time to do so, or if
you would rather just have the beta now without level 2. Any thoughts?

 Sincerely,
 Thomas Ward

At Joe Dimagio's in San Francisco, back in the 1980's, they had a lunch

Hi,

The What? What's a hanimbal lecter style slerp of evil? Lol!

I will say though that pizza sounds like something I'd love to try.
Long time ago Pizza Hut use to sell a bbq pizza that was delicious.
Sadly it was here and gone, and they have tried other things such as
taco pizzas etc but nothing ever tasted as good as their bbq pizza
from the 1980's.

Oh, and 18 inches isn't a truck tire. however, a pizza as big as a
truck tire does sound good though. Let's order one and split it.
Let's get one as large as a semi-truck tire. What do yousay?

Cheers!

We should order one from Pizza Emergency. I mean, a nice big one! They
make a 28-inch pizza.

At Joe Dimagio's in San Francisco, back in the 1980's, they had a lunch
special that you got free of charge if you could eat it all. It was a
single topping pizza, and it did have a lot on it, but it was a 36-inch
monstrosity. I wasn't about to try it. I really did enjoy talking
baseball with the owner, though.

Re: [Audyssey] Please Vote on the BrailleSoft Poll

2011-03-04 Thread Trouble
Well as far as that goes. Just look at what is being offered now,
because that is what needs supported.
In windows would go xp and above, because the rest are not supported
or even easy to find.
There are always linix users, but not widely in blind community and
most ssh or tellnet into it. that is a always changing field and may gain more.
With Apple stuff, you better go for what is going on now. Because
seen it before from one version to next don't mean the same software
works. For example screen flow. It worked good in leopard but not
snow leopard. Now what works on snow leopard may not work on tiger.
To keep inventing. You have to stay as current with software as much
as possible, or you get left behind!

2011-03-04 Thread Damien Pendleton

Hi Louis,
I don't feel that people should be forced into upgrading.
I believe there should be a check to see which library will successfully
open the audio device. Start with XAudio2. If that fails, switch to
DirectSound. That way, there is no necessity to upgrade, but those who have
upgraded will still receive the benefits of the new system.

Regards,
Damien.

are

there any recordings or trails for the ESP Pinball out there, so I can

[Audyssey] esp pinball classic thoughts

2011-03-04 Thread dark
Hi.

Well I bought the game and have been playing it for a couple of hours now, and
I actually think draconis didn't do themselves any favours by having the
packman and wildwest tables in the demo, sinse the others are much more fun.

They seem generally easier than most of the xtreme tables.

Socker star was easy once I worked out a way of getting instant goals by only
knocking out one defender, and got that instance reflex to hit the spacebar
everytime I here the ball come near my goal.

Safari was proving a problem until I sped up my key hammering speed for
escaping the water and the kooga, once I got that worked out it was fine.

Haunted house is my favourite, the sfx are just awsome (EVENTHE INTRO is cool),
and probably is the hardest one I've cracked thus far, sinse some of those
shots, particularly for the letter g took a bit of working out.

Heist I'm stil trying thus far.

Beware the grue!

Hi Dark,

Well, as far as the demo of Pinball Clasic goes the blame doesn't fall
on Draconis really. The demo has always used the Packman and Wild West
tables ever since it was first released by ESP which was long before
Josh came along and took it over. I agree with you, however, that some
of the other tables like Haunted House would have made abetter demo
table than the current demo tables.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,

I'm sure you know this is coming, but I absolutely disagree with this.
For one thing it is not practical to include XAudio2 and DirectSound
in the same executable and it is going to become much harder to
support long term since Microsoft has officially dropped support for
DirectSound 8 and earlier. That means support will only remain as long
as the legacy libraries are compatible with the OS. As it is we are
already experiencing problems with DirectSound 8 and Windows 7, and
nobody knows if it will be remotely compatible with the next version
of Windows or not. Given that fact alone it is always a good idea to
adopt the new standards early on so that BGT and all the games written
for it are not only
XP compatible but are forward compatible with
Windows 7 and beyond. It is frankly downright foolish to stick with an
old API and unsupported legacy libraries when there is an easy Windows
XP web installer for the newer DirectX components. I'm frankly sick
and tired of this if it ain't broke don't fix it attitude I see on
this list.

Second, there are a number of key benifits to upgrading to XAudio2
rather than sticking with DirectSound besides forward compatibility.
Improved 3d audio, better custom DSP effects, better memory
management, better support for newer sound cards, etc top the list of
improvements and features. Answer me why on earth would you want to
forego these benifits and features just to stick with an out dated
technology like DirectSound

In my opinion there is absolutely nothing, no reason what so ever,
that could convince me that DirectSound is better. If you disagree
with me that's fine, but absolutely do not, I mean do not, hold us
back from XAudio2 because Windows 7 users such as myself absolutely
need it. DirectSound does not work well on Windows 7 at all and it is
high time that developers get off their collective butts and start
providing up to date technical support for the OS or I'm personally
not going to buy a single product from them again. Not now not ever.

On 3/4/11, Damien Pendleton dam...@x-sight-interactive.net wrote:
 Hi Louis,
I don't feel that people should be forced into upgrading.
I believe there should be a check to see which library will successfully
open the audio device. Start with XAudio2. If that fails, switch to
DirectSound. That way, there is no necessity to upgrade, but those who have
upgraded will still receive the benefits of the new system.
 Regards,
 Damien.

So I haven't a clue what you are talking about.

In any case I'm pretty sure the DirectX components we are talking
about are sp2 compatible. However, you might have to check. It is
possible they have updated to using sp3 libraries by now. That would
generally be because they are supposed to be more stable than sp2

Well that makes sense Tom, accept I do regret a litle not buying the game
originally.

When I first tried esp pinball classic back in 2006 when I bought xtreme, my
opinion was that the tables were far simpler than the xtreme ones so I
didn't bother with the game, my mistake as it turns out.

That's obviously why the second game has the pinball extreme and I believe
alien invasion tables, which have a lot going on in them, in fact if I
remember rightly I bought the game the same night I tried it just on the
strength of those two tables (particularly pinball xtremem).

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Casey,

Yes, that is possible to do, but not exactly cheap. It is up to the
setup application to check for installed components and install them.
I haven't had any luck with Inno Setup in testing for these
components, but I do know Advanced Setup Installer will test for
various requirements such as DirectX, .NET Framework, and lots of
stuff. Problem is that Advanced Setup Installer is extremely,
extremely, extremely expensive. So while it is possible in order to
pay for the right tools for the job you can expect the game developers
to pay an extra $300 to $400 to get the right setup tools. Either that
or they have to learn Microsofts MSI language and write custom MSI
scripts. Not the easiest job for a newby.

Cheers!

Hi I used to have a game of pinball when I was really small, just a
 horrid
plastic one, but I didn't understand the rules. What I'm wondering is
 are
there any recordings or trails for the ESP Pinball out there, so I can
listen and get a feel for it, rather than stumble my way through a demo
version. Isn't the point of pinball that you move the ball and it
lands
 on
certain numbers? If so, then where does a haunted house or nightmare
  table
come into it? Sorry for being very dim on this one, but it would help
if
someone could explain it a bit for me. Thanks from Lori.

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,

Not true. Yes, it is true that XAudio2 doesn't have a native pan
control but the way the API is designed it is rather simple to create
a custom pan control for XAudio2 that works exactly like DirectSound.
Philip and I have been discussing this off list, and he has already
made such a pan control for Streemway so nothing would essentially
change for BGT developers. The only change is they would get a better
API for game development, and they shouldn't have to do major
modification of their game code either.

As for MOTA and 3d you might want to remember that that was using
OpenAL via the SFML-Audio wrapper. SFML-Audio didn't offer a pan
control, and OpenAL works completely different from XAudio2. To be
canded comparing OpenAL and XAudio2 is comparing apples and oranges.
They are two different kinds of fruit, but that's where similarity
ends and differences begin. All I'm saying as stop thinking of XAudio2
in the same terms of OpenAL as they work differently and shouldn't be
compared in this context.

I guess you could keep legacy stuff around is it possible to have

Eventually like anything direct sound will probably dissapear but for
now there are a lot of people that still play with it and use it.
 Though
I am no programmer and don't know how game code would have to change.
if it just means the files change but the code is the same with more

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Philip,

Yes, by all means please do. As one of those who has already switched
all but one of my Windows computers to Windows 7 it is a bit unfair to
be held back from buying new games using XAudio2 that will directly
support Windows 7 better just to pander to those Windows users still
running XP who either refuse or don't have the money to upgrade to
Windows 7 yet. Especially, seeing as upgrading to DirectX June 2010 is
a free upgrade for them and wouldn't cost them anything more than a
little time and energy. Plus as BGT is a commercial venture I think
you should think highly of the future compatibility of the engine
rather than thinking of what people have right now. Odds are probably
pretty good in the next five years most of the XP systems running
right now will be so far out of date people will buy new computers
with Windows 7 preinstalled and it is a good idea to plan ahead for
that eventuality rather than waiting until the change comes and have
to play catch up.

On 3/4/11, Philip Bennefall phi...@blastbay.com wrote:
 Hi all,

Recently I have been making some drastic changes to the BGT core. As many of
you will know, most audio games today use a technology known as DirectSound
to output audio. BGT is no exception. Until about 3 years ago DirectSound
was the interface of choice for all Windows based games. It has been around
since 1995, and has become rather stable over the years. However, Microsoft
are now pushing developers away from DirectSound as it is being replaced by
a new audio engine called XAudio2. XAudio2 provides much greater flexibility
when it comes to low latency audio processing, and is an over-all better
system than DirectSound. However, in order for XAudio2 to work reliably I
have found that the end users need to run at least the June 2010 release of
Direct X 9. It is also necessary for users of Windows 7 service pack 1 to
 upgrade in a few cases.

So my question to you all is this. In the next BGT release, would you like
me to switch to XAudio2? This will give much better performance on Windows
Vista and 7 as compared to DirectSound, but should be about the same on Xp.
However, the games simply will not run if the user has anything earlier than
Direct X June 2010 installed and it will force them to upgrade. Do I
maintain two versions of the engine for a while, a DirectSound and an
XAudio2 build, or are we okay to switch immediately? This is what I would
like to ask you all before I make a final decision.

 Thanks for reading.

 Kind regards,

 Philip Bennefall

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Damien Pendleton

Hey Thomas,
I'm sorry it really bothers you that much. For a start, it was only a
suggestion to try and be forward, as well as backward compatible and I felt
you were biting my head off so to speak. The tone of your message there I
feel was rather harsh and judgmental, even disdainful, towards people
running earlier systems. I myself have no problems making reasonable
upgrades to my system if and when the time comes, I was merely thinking of
the community as a whole.
For a second, I was not holding anybody back from XAudio2. If you want
XAudio2, fine. If not, I don't think people should be penalised for it and
have to suffer a lack of games and the developer a lack of money because
only three out of the seven or so Windows operating systems are supported.
To give you an idea, I have a friend based over here who has written
software, and even a miniature game, that can be run on all flavours of
windows, right from Windows 95, which he runs by the way, all the way up to
Vista, if not higher. If his game were marketable, there is a possibility he
may get more custom than people who are prepared to only support the latest
and greatest, since there are also people, quite a few of whom I am on
friendly terms with, who run systems earlier than XP, either for personal
preference, or financial problems in upgrades.
I think there should be more tolerance towards people who prefer earlier
versions of an operating system. I myself would choose XP over any of the
later systems, because that is the system that I have written, composed
music, edited audio, played games and programmed software with for the past
ten years, although I have been through the 95 and 98 phases as well. Even
if I wanted to I couldn't upgrade to a later version of Windows, since it
would mean forking out a whole lot more money just for a new licence for a
completely new copy of Windows. With my living arrangements this just isn't
affordable. So am I uncool or unworthy just because I run on an older
system?

Regards,
Damien.

I don't feel that people should be forced into upgrading.

have

upgraded will still receive the benefits of the new system.

Hi Thomas,
Even if Inno Setup can't internally check for such components, I am sure it
would be possible to check with the Pascal scripting, just by checking for
certain files or registry values, or even better, run the DXSetup tool
directly from the installer using a silent installation, and let that do all

Re: [Audyssey] Please Vote on the BrailleSoft Poll

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Trouble,

Just a little note. Well, it is hard to say how many blind users use
Linux, because not a lot of them are on this list. However, there
seams to be quite a lot over on the Orca mailing list, Speakup mailing
list, Gnome Accessibility List, etc. As a result I have estimated
about 100 blind Linux users online world wide just by reading posts
etc. There may be more possibly less, but it is still a fairly decent
market if a game developer actively courts that market. The trouble is
that game developers often hang out here rather than the Linux
specific lists and there hasn't been any concerted effort to go to the
source and ask about how many VI Linux users there are interested in
playing games. So the trouble with The Braille Soft polll is I know it
has been posted here, but has it been posted to the Linux mailing
lists too?

If not then I doubt Louis will hear back from a number of Linux users
since they don't tend to congrigate on this list. Besides myself I
know Zack, Michael, and a couple of others regularly use Linux but not
many on this list do. However, four or five of us aren't
representative of the entire blind Linux community.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] XAudio2 and BGT

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Damien,

My apologies. I didn't mean to bite your head off. I shouldn't have
come down on you so harshly. However, allow me to explain my position
a little clearer withouttthe flaming.

First, my issue isn't with the fact people are running older operating
systems like XP. I know full well a lot of us have fixed incomes, a
limited budget, and the Microsoft technologies cost a lot to upgrade
and maintain regularly. So my agrivation isn't so much that people are
running older software, but all too often many of them have an
attitude of if it ain't broke don't fix it. That really agrivates
me, because I know full well that isn't true when multiple versions of
Windows are involved.

For instance, XAudio2 is available for XP, Vista, and Windows 7 and is
a totally free upgrade. There is no reason why someone can't upgrade
to XAudio2 if they are running XP because it is free and by doing so a
developer can better support XP, Vista, and Windows 7 at the same time
using the exact same APIs and libraries. Instead of doing the right
thing like switching to XAudio2 for all Windows platforms we get these
compromises like lets support XP with DirectSound and support Vista
with XAudio2, or let the end user decide wich he/she wants to use etc.
That is a nightmare for a developer to be honest, and perhaps we
should be greatful Philip allowed us to discuss this openly with him.
A mainstream developer would just pick the best option for the
project, and that would be the end of the debate right there.

Second, as far as thinking of the community as a hole that is what I'm
doing as well. Sure I have a vested interested in this choice because
I am effected by this decision more than XP users. However, you have
to understand exactly where I am coming from.

When I began taking college courses one of the things they traind us
to do as programmers is to think and plan ahead for the future. To
plan ahead in advance so that our software can be supported and
upgraded for the long term rather than just looking at what is
available for today. By doing so you will adopt certain APIs, tools,
and practices that will help you achieve that goal for the long term
rather than the short term. Otherwise from a technical point of view
you are setting yourself up for a huge amount of work rewriting and
fixing your mistakes later on.

For example, let's say a person starts programming a game today in
Visual Basic 6, using DirectX 8, and makes the build for a Windows XP
32-bit system. He figures reasonably enough that most of the computers
have this type of setup, and will just blow off the fact that 64-bit
platforms have replaced 32-bit platforms, and that Visual Basic 6 and
DirectX 8 are not really handled that well on Windows 7. Two years
from now Microsoft releases Windows X, it is 64-bit only, running on a
64-bit platform, and VB 6 and DirectX 8 are no longer compatible with
the operating system. What is the developer to do?

Well, the answer is quite clear. He has to take his source code and
upgrade it to VB .NET or similar language which will require a massive
rewrite. That will cost him both time and energy rewriting what he has
already written. All of this could have been avoided just by doing
that in the first place. It isn't like he didn't know when he started
that these changes were coming, but he chose to ignore them for
whatever reason.

My point is since BGT is a game development tool we are going to run
into this exact same issue sooner or later. It is better we take care
of this upgrade now rather than wait until whenever to take care of
it. Do you see where I am coming from?

Finally, as far as supporting Windows 95 through Windows 7 I know it
can be done, but it is not a good idea by any means. there are some
darn good reasons why pro developers don't do it, and those are the
exact same reasons why I will never support Windows 95, 98, or ME. It
has nothing to do with tollerence, but more to do with the time, cost,
and technical aspects of trying to support Windows 9x era software.

One, any time you want to try and support legacy software like Windows
95 and Windows 98 that means you end up having to use a lowest common
denominator approach. Instead of using Visual C++ 2008 that means
going clear back to Visual C++ 6.0 which is less accessible, buggier,
and is no longer supported on Windows 7. Instead of using DirectX
9.0C, DirectX 10, or DirectX 11 we have to go back to DirectX 8 which
is itself no longer supported. In fact, the SDK isn't even available
from Microsoft any more making finding and obtaining the development
kits required a serious difficulty.

Two, assuming we decide to use this lowest common denominator approach
everyone who purchases your product are litterally going to lose out
on a lot of features that could have been included by supporting newer
APIs and libraries. For example, better 3d graphics using Microsoft
Direct3D, support for XInput controllers using XInput, superior 3d
audio processing and

Attention, ladies and gentlemen. Are you in a really bad mood? You
know, are you having the kind of day where you want to just kick
someone's butt just because you feel like it? You just want to
sstrangle your next door neighbor because his dog crapped on your side
walk again? Are you angry at the neighborhood kids because they
through a baseball through your front picture window?

We've got the answer for you. Mad Games Inc. has totally revised the
popular game, Bop It, with a revolutionary new anger based theme. This
handheld device can stand up to hours of pounding and will seriously
take abeating.

Try out the various modes. Slightly angry mode gives you prompts to
punch it, throw it, kick it, and beat it. Very angry mode adds slam
it, smash it, jump on it, and chop it. Extremely angry mode includes
an explode it option that wil detonate this device. Makes a great hand
grenade to throw at your next door neighbor, or your neighbors' kids
when they throw a baseball through your picture window.

Warning! Do not hold this device when explode it is activated. May
cause serious injury or death. However, slip it in your neighbor's
mailbox or your neighbor's trash can and listen to the loud bang.

Sincerely,
Mad Games Inc.

[Audyssey] games we'd like to play: chaganooga choo choo madness

2011-03-04 Thread NIcol
Plot and objective:
Have you heard that glen miller song, chaganooga choo choo?
Well, its telling of this couple that travels on the chaganooga choo choo
train. Only thing is the husband just wants to get onto that train; no
matter who is in the way!
 That's why the song says:
Step aside partner, its my day.
Rude, isn't it?
Well, your character, a little green elve has decided to teach this male
traveler some good manners because he always bumps people out of the way
telling them
Step aside partner, its my day.
So you decides to take matters into your own hands and teach him a lesson.
If there's one thing that this male traveler is concerned about, is his
shirt buttons .So you decided, armed with your long hook, to rip off all
his golden shirt buttons the next time he rudely says:
step aside partner, its my day.
So you storm down upon him with 3d game movement and you try to rip off as
many precious buttons with your hook pressing spacebar.
You have to back off and come back several times, as he tries to attack
you. Then things gets worse, you no longer can manage to rip off his
shirt buttons. His attacks gets too fast!
Now you get onto the train, disconnect the train whissel, and get back to
the rude traveler and by using shift, give loud blows on the train whissel
right into his ear, backing off in between and coming back so that the
traveler screams in pain and anger and storms away, never again traveling on
the chaganooga choo choo!

[Audyssey] Beat-M-Ups was Beat It Extreme

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Yohandy,

Yeah, I definitely agree. Until we actually create some classic
beat-m-up games using BGT or Genesis 3D I doubt many VI gamers will
ever play them. In fact, now that the Genesis 3D engine is pretty much
stable enough for game development I've got a few beat-m-up games in
mind. When I was sighted I use to love Bad Dudes, Legend of Kage, and
Double Dragon. Any of these classic beat-m-ups could be converted to
audio quite easily. All I'd have to do is change the name of the
characters , name of the game, and bingo. We've got a classic
beat-m-up from the NES/Super NES era for the PC. It wouldn't take more
than a month or two in order to create something like that.

Hi Nicol,

Dominoes Pizza is the name of a popular restaurant chain in the U.S.
and apparently in the U.K. as well. They sell, well, pizza of course.

And just in case anyone didn't get my joke about a tombstone on their
pizza that is another brand of pizza. Here in the U.S. there is a
brand of frozen pizzas called Tombstone you buy at Wal-Mart, Publics,
Giant Eagle, or wherever you like to shop and take it home and put it
in the oven for 30 minutes. There company logo is, what do you want
on your tombstone? I changed that around and asked what kind of
tombstone do you want on your pizza?

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun and all,

Well, besides the fact a large sword or shotgun could throw off your
balance etc there are also other considerations. In the tomb rader
games when Lara jumps a chasm or jumps up to grab a ledge she needs to
grab the ledge with her hands and pull herself up onto the ledge. If
her hands aren't free to grab the ledge she'll drop like a stone into
the pit or miss the ledge. The same idea applies here in MOTA except
that Angela does this automatically instead of manually.

[Audyssey] A Suggestion for SCW

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Phil and all,

Tonight I was sitting back playing a game of Sarah when I realised
there is a feature I'd really love to se added to the game at some
point. I don't know how many of you have ever played some of the Harry
Potter PC games, but in many of them you have to use the mouse to cast
spells. For example, in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone to cast
the Flipendo spell you have to move the mouse right, down, and then
quickly up again. Then, click the left mouse button to cast the spell.
For one thing it is visually pretty cool because Harry follows your
wand movements on screen, but more than that it makes the games a bit
more challenging because you actually have to learn and remember how
to do each and every spell in the game. I was wondering if this could
be a possible addition to Sarah at some point?

Cheers!

When I first tried esp pinball classic back in 2006 when I bought xtreme,

That's obviously why the second game has the pinball extreme and I believe

Hi Clement,

I'm certainly interested in such a project. I guess the next question
is what kind of beat-m-up to right. Most of the ones I enjoyed and
still enjoy are from the NES era such as Batman, Double Dragon, Bad
Dudes, and so on. Those games didn't have a lot of martial arts
weapons. What you are thinking is more like Legend of Kage which had
throwing stars and a katana as best as I recall. In Double Dragon it
mainly had various kicks and punches. There weren't that many weapons
you could use other than dropped baseball bats and things like that.
Batman had punches, kicks, his Batarang, and some kind of rocket
launcher. Any of these would be easy to create in audio. I'd be
interested in your ideas.

Cheers!

Cheers!

True that. But it doesn't have to be an exact carbon copy with
different characters though, does it? Double Dragon reputedly had
martial arts in it, and you could, say, change the nationality of the
characters if you are going to change the names as well. In that way,
if they were to be Japanese or Asian, the game could take place in
Asia, and thus feature a more martial arts-related kind of sceen. If
you really do want to know what I have to say, we can continue this
discussion offlist or on... I'd be happy to do either. I just think
that martial arts is a great setting for beat em ups. Especially
sidescrolling ones.

Cheers!

and being a practicioner of a martial art I could be of some use if a
certain type of weapon were picked up in terms of designing moves.
Namely Japanese swords... since a lot of the beat em ups I played had
them somewhere, regardless of whether it was made by a japanese
company or not. The katana seemed to be one of the weapons you could
rely on to be present in a lot of beat em ups, even in the more
modern ones that aren't 3d. lol.

 Beat It Extreme

 by Mad Games Inc.

Re: [Audyssey] A Suggestion for SCW

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ben,

Yes, I know. You can blame the naming issue on Scholastic. For reasons
no one will ever understand, including J. K. Rowling herself,
Scholastic insisted that the name be changed for the U.S. market even
though it was being marketed in the U.K. by Bloomsberry as Harry
Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. As you might have guessed the
movies, games, toys, etc followed the patern. In the U.S. it was
named one thing and in the U.K. another. Its not something we can do
anything about, and I've gotten use to calling it by both names.

At any rate you might be surprised I have a complete copy of the Harry
Potter books published by Bloomsberry instead of Scholastic for that
very reason. Scholastic basically took the books, heavily edited
them, and made it easier to follow by an American audience by changing
the names of things when and where necessary. I didn't really like it,
because they changed the story a little too much in my opinion.

For example, in Chamber of Secrets when discussing the Ford Anglia the
U.K. version uses English names for things like the boot and bonnet
of the car. In the American release they use trunk and hood instead.
Instead of using toilet they inserted the word bath room. These are
relatively miner changes, but I personally like reading it exactly as
J. K. Rowling wrote it instead of reading it second hand after some
American editor got done changing this and that to fit their idea of
how the book should read. So, yeah, I agree if you read the U.K.
versionand then the U.S. version it seams quite strange to see how
much difference there is over all.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Beat-M-Ups was Beat It Extreme

2011-03-04 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Clement,

No, it definitely doesn't have to be an exact carbon copy. In fact,
that's a very bad idea considering how fanatical Nintendo is about
their copyrights to begin with. Plus something like Batman has so many
copyrights on it from music, sounds, trademark, etc that would require
some pretty major changes to slip under the copyright radar.

That said, we can use such games as a starting place for ideas,
general game play, and so on. Heck if we wanted a game like Batman
instead of having it in Gothom City we can create our own imaginary
city, super hero, and purchase original music, and we are set. Even
if this man or woman is American doesn't mean he/she can't be trained
in martial arts and weapons. Just makes it more interesting than the
typical Asian Ninja beat-m-up is all.

Any way, it might be nice to keep the topic on list. After all, others
might be interested in dropping their ideas in the hat and we can see
what comes of it.Yohandy seams interested, your interested, I'm
interested and the list is a great forum for hashing out ideas for a
game like this.

On 3/5/11, Clement Chou chou.clem...@gmail.com wrote:
