Hi Hayden,
Oh, it wasn't too bad all things considered. STFC is actually easier
than a lot of things I've written before or after it.
In fact, now that it seams likely we might be going to a more Lone
Wolf style Star Trek game I have an idea for what to do with the old
STFC source code. I could create a Star Wars fleet command game where
you get to command a number of rebbel star cruisers and star fighters
against the Imperial fleet of star destroyers, Tie Fighters, Tie
Bombers, etc. Now, that would totally rock.

I think you should have the pkb soundpacks link since I put that up a

Anyway, regarding the style of game play after reading Dark's post I
wonder if Final Conflict 2.0 should be a fleet strategy game at all.
Dark's idea is to make the game more like Lone Wolf where you command
one ship and carry out a number of missions in real time. I have to
say I'm rather excited about the concept and wonder what others think
about it. If enough people are interested I can quite easily rewrite
the game to use the genesis Engine to make a real time action game

Hi Hayden,
As I recall the amount of torpedoes the enemy ships fired was random,
but the max was 15 torpedoes per turn for the Romulan warbirds. That

after all, just one difficulty level where you fight a borg cube.

and DS9 show don't sound anything like the ones used in the PKB mod,
and Shaun said that was probibly because the creator didn't have the
correct sounds to begin with or ran out of sounds. I replied if I had
been notified I could have given the person the correct Romulan
torpedo sound from the television show.

 Hi Shaun,
That's possible I guess. Although, I'm rather surprised no one shared
this project with me until now. I would have been able to produce the
correct torpedo sound out of my Star Trek sound library for the mod.
It is still a good mod all things considered though.

What were the stats, for example, of a Romulan ship? How many torpedoes
could they fire in one turn? Depending on this, it wouldn't be too bad.
However, what did confuse me is the higher difficulty level, as there is,
after all, just one difficulty level where you fight a borg cube.

Hi,
Really? You destroyed a Borg Cube in a single turn?
I don't remember being able to do that. At least not on the higher
difficulty levels. Although, I do remember quite a lot of complaining
back when STFC was in beta testing that the Borg were too hard to
beat so I changed their stats. Apparently I made them two low now.
Anyway, as for your view of creating a turn-based game with limits per
turn that does make some sense. The Sovereign-Class ships can only
fire 30 torpedoes at a time which constitutes a full spread. If I made
the game more to Star Trek technical specs that should be all they can
fire per turn which would make the game more drawn out, and you would
have multiple turns to carry out a battle rather than whiping out one
or more enemy ships in a single move. That would both be more
difficult and realistic as far as a turn-based game goes.

Hi Dakotah,
To tell the truth I sort of miss the turn-based style of play myself.
As it stands now the game doesn't offer you much control over the
ships once you asign them their patrol route, and it lacks the hands
on strategy value the previous game had. So I'd really be interested
in hearing your thoughts on this.
Basicly, I'd like to know if people are more in favor of the classic
turn-based style of game play or would really want real time strategy.
There are advantages/disadvantages of both styles of game play. I
could really go either way at this point since I'm in the process of
converting the game from .Net to C++ anyway.

how do the licences for that go though.
I suppose that would have to be free to or is that licence different
for starwars.

STFC source code. I could create a Star Wars fleet command game where
you get to command a number of rebbel star cruisers and star fighters
against the Imperial fleet of star destroyers, Tie Fighters, Tie

its like trek 2000 but its easier to control, there is no unit
issues, no small torpedo limit, and none of the basic type thing t2k has.
t2k was just a straight port of trek 1999 so its not its fault it was

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,

On 6/11/10, Dakotah Rickard dakotah.rick...@gmail.com wrote:
Particularly, I would rather see a turn based game that limits what
you can do per turn. You sort of set that up, limiting the number of
phaser and torpedo shots per turn, but the limits were, likely, still
too large. Especially if a borg cube can be destroyed in one go.

I love realtime stuff, but if I had an honest preference, it'd be a
turn based game that had some limits per turn.

I'd also like to see more features that make use of impulse. The
option is available in navigation, but it doesn't seem to have any
 real value.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-11 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
Oh, assuming I ever did that, creating a Star Wars fleet command game,
it would have to be freeware. I definitely would not try and sell it.
That would surely bring Lucas's lawyers down on me, and I could get
sued for selling it with out permission. However, if I released the
game as freeware, fan fiction, it is unlikely they would do anything
major. About the worst I could expect is a legal letter ordering me to
remove the game from my web site, and abandon the project.
Although, I wouldn't necessarily have to put it on my web site to
begin with. I could always slap it on my Send Space account where they
aren't likely to stumble across it. In other words if I release it as
anonymously or release it possibly as open source there isn't a whole
lot they can do to me legally. It will largely take the teeth out of
their legal bite I think. I know that the open source community, for
example, has won several battles over copyrights and the courts are
beginning to allow more copyrighted content to be used under the free
fair use claws of the copyright law. This by no means makes it
strictly legal, per say, but I've seen a number of free open source
clones of games out there that would technically violate copyright
law, but have been allowed to continue development. It is a fine line,
but the fact remains going free and possibly open source with a
project like that would be my best bet.

Hi Shaun,
Oh, that could be. Haven't watched DS9 in a while so I have forgotten
what the claxon sounds like. Still I'm a bit surprised the red alert
for the Sovereign-Class ships seen in Star Trek 8 was replaced by
another claxon sound. To me that just sounds off. You know what I
mean?
However, some of the other sounds are pretty good. I like the fact
someone mixed the weapons with the ship sounds. That made it more
realistic in some cases.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
To be honest I'm not quite sure of all of the details yet. As I have
said many times most of this is on the drawing board so to speak.
Things can change a lot between now and a beta release. In fact, a lot
of what I have just mentioned on list hasn't been implemented yet, are
things I'd like to do, but haven't done because of lack of time. Case
in point.
Although, I'd certainly like to add the ability to select the class of
starship at present that feature isn't available. When I first began
the STFC 2 project I was strictly thinking of TNG era ships such as
the Galaxy-Class and Nebula-Class ships seen on the television series.
As a result you started out with ships like the Enterprise, Lexington,
Monitor, and Sutherland. Optionally you can build the phoenix,
Faragut, Odyssey, and Venture. After a while though I realized I
could expand the game to be more like SoundRTS where you could begin
with say the Constitution-Class of the classic Star Trek television
series and research and build everything up to the Sovereign-Class of
Star Trek 8, 9, and 10. In order to do this the game requires a major
rewrite which will take months if not a year or more to complete.
Basicly, the game I now plan on releasing is fundimentally different
than the one I started writing months ago, and needs to be majorly
rewritten before I release a beta. I really can't say what features I
will eventually settle on for the beta release as it is going to be
considerably harder to write than the previous versions of the game.

Hi Shaun,
I don't see any reason why you couldn't install STFC 1.x and STFC 2.0
side by side. Inno Setup lets you rename the install directory and
start menu groups if need be. However, as soon as 2.0 is released STFC
1.0 and 1.2 will be considered abandonware. I'm not supporting any of
my .Net based projects in any way, shape, or form.
As it happens I pretty much figure fans of the STFC games will likely
want both I can easly have it install to USA Games\Final Conflict II
which is a completely different installation directory by default from
the original STFC games.

Hi Shaun,
Right. I use the Defiant quite a lot myself to run hit and run attacks
against the enemy forces. I generally use the other ships of the
fleet to draw the enemy Romulans and Klingons out of hiding and then
unload on them. Usually it results in serious damage to the enemy
fleet.
Anyway, regarding the style of game play after reading Dark's post I
wonder if Final Conflict 2.0 should be a fleet strategy game at all.
Dark's idea is to make the game more like Lone Wolf where you command
one ship and carry out a number of missions in real time. I have to
say I'm rather excited about the concept and wonder what others think
about it. If enough people are interested I can quite easily rewrite
the game to use the genesis Engine to make a real time action game
like Bridge Commander or something like that. Now, that sounds cool to
me.

its like trek 2000 but its easier to control, there is no unit

total crap in the end since it was a straight dos port and for its

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Yes, thanks. I have the STFC 1 soundpack from PKB. While I really
like the new sounds a few of them are the wrong sounds. Wrong in that
the Romulan torpedoes someone used don't sound like those from the TNG
and DS9 series. Plus for the Red Alert someone replaced the red alert
sound, from Star Trek 8, with the warp core breech alert. I'm not sure
who put it together, but he or she made some mistakes in selecting
certain sounds that aren't the correct sounds from the shows and
movies.
I don't like to sound like a profectionist, but as a long time Trek
fan I like things to be done right. That is done according to cannon
and not mixing up the alert for a warp core breech for the general red
alert clacson. It is this sort of mistake that is the problem with
soundpacks. People who maybe aren't so interested in those fine
details will stick in any sound they think is cool rather than the
correct one that belongs there.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-10 Thread Hayden Presley
Hi Shaun,
Actually, as far asI'm concerned Trekk 2000 is easier to play, mainly
because you can play the totally defensive strategy. However, I don't see
where the smaller torpedo limit was, since you needed--what, 5
torpedoes?--to destroy a ship. Though, I must say, the biggest pro for me in
terms of Final Conflict has to be the sounds, which are a lot better and
more numerous, after all Trekk 2000 didn't have a docking nor a restocking
sound. Oh, and there was that other question I had...can anyone save a game
of Trekk 2000 and if so, how?
Best Reggards,
Hayden

its like trek 2000 but its easier to control, there is no unit
issues, no small torpedo limit, and none of the basic type thing t2k has.
t2k was just a straight port of trek 1999 so its not its fault it was
total crap in the end since it was a straight dos port and for its
time was a good go.

Hi Dakotah,
To tell the truth I sort of miss the turn-based style of play myself.

Smile.

Hi Hayden,
Yes, you could say STFC 1.0 was inspired by Trek 2000. A couple of
different things motivated me to write it.
For one thing when I purchased Trek 2000 although I liked the game I
wanted a game set in the TNG universe with Romulans, Klingons,
Cardassians, and the Borg. I also wanted to correct things I saw as
serious drawbacks such as the game didn't use official Star Trek
cannon for the number of torpedoes the ships could carry or how much
phaser power it had. You also couldn't abort an attack even though an
enemy ship was destroyed etc. Basicly, I grew to dislike Trek 2000
because it didn't live up to my own hard core Star Trek expectations,
and so decided to write my own game according to my own vision of that
game.
As it happens I was learning C# .Net at the time, and needed to write
something for practice. What better way to practice with a new
language then to write a game you would like to create your own way.
So I created STFC Alpha 1 and USA Games came into existance.

Hi Hayden,
Oh, it wasn't too bad all things considered.

I've run into the problem where, on whatever the hardest difficulty
level is in STFC, which I can't remember the name for at present, I've
run a whole fleet of ships into enemy space, blown up both starbases

I eventually have to bring in two ships, the Defiant cloaked and
another, and let the other be destroyed by the two cloaked ships,
either Romulan or Klingon, to win the game. That then runs the risk of
the Defiant being caught by the other faction that is cloaked and

Hi,
Oh, I know. I rather liked Defiant's cloak myself. Only problem is
that the game never properly worked right ever since adding it to the

the original source code for STFC so couldn't do it the way it needed
to be done.
I suppose if we completely ignored the ability to build ships of
various classes we could probibly do it, but then we are talking about
ignoring one of the major features of the new game. The new STFC is
more like a real time strategy game, like SoundRTS, where you give the
ships commands to protect a sector of space, attack a certain sector,
etc and the A.I. takes over at that point. It is far better than the
turn based game we have now as everything happens in a more real time
environment.

Re: [Audyssey] Star Trekk Games, both Final Conflict and Trekk 2000...

2010-06-09 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,
I haven't decided how many ships the game will be able to support, but
I am going to aim for at least 10 to 12 ships for each side for the
new version of the game.
As I said before the new STFC isn't at all like Trek 2000 or even STFC
1.0. It is more of a strategy game along the lines of Galaxy
Civilization only set in the Star Trek universe. You might start out
with the Constitution-Class ships of the classic Star Trek era, and
upgrade through the various classes between that and the
Sovereign-Class such as the Excelcior-Class, Ambassador-Class,
Nebula-Class, Galaxy-Class, and so on. With technology upgrades come
better classes of ships and weapons. Instead of photons the
Sovereign-Class will cary the Quantom torpedoes which are far more
powerful. Same goes for the Defiant-Class. Plus better classes of
ships will have better warp drive systems. For example, the
Intrepid-Class, like Voyager, can do speeds of warp 9.975 where the
classic Enterprise, a Constitution-Class ship, could really only hold
a speed of warp 8 for long distances. Definitely a huge tactical
difference in speed and firepower.

It rather irritates me that I have to essentially have one ship be a big fat

Hi Hayden,
In STFC not all of the enemy ships will attack your ships and
starbases out right. They remain in enemy space as boarder patrols and
as a rear guard. So if you destroy the enemy fleet you must prepare a
fleet of your own and enter enemy space and destroy any ships/stations
you find there to win the game. You can not simply stay near a
starbase and blow everything up as in Trek 2000.
In fact, the new STFC, version 2.0, which still in development there
are more important reasons to attack the enemy bases. in STFC both the
Federation and the enemy races have shipyards you can use to rebuild
destroyed ships. As a result instead of destroying the enemy fleet you
need to take out the enemy shipyards to win the game else they will
continue building and rebuilding ships until you are completely
destroyed. Not only that , but I'm currently working on a feature so
you can even specify the type of class to build such as Nebula,
Galaxy, Sovereign, Defiant, etc. As a result with each succcessive
wave of ships they will be updated and tougher to beat.

Hi Dark,
Actually, there are times where you do get to attack before the enemy, but
what with the romulans and klingons with their cloaking devices, it gets
tricky to avoid the enemy attacking first.

I would also very much like to see a way of actually being able to attack
the enemy first without having your ship shot at and without having to use
the defiant with it's cloaking device.

It rather irritates me that I have to essentially have one ship be a big fat

targit just so that I can attack the enemy, simply because of the turn
order.

Beware the grue!

Hi Dark,
Well, that's part of the problem with turn based play. Everything
takes a turn and if you are attacked unexpectedly you will end up
getting shot at first. It is possible, even in the current release to
attack first, but it is tricky to work out a strategy where you
actually get to shoot them first. I've done it several times, but it
is hard to do.

Hi Peter,
Well, I'm looking at the Defiant-class itself not necessarily the
U.S.S. Defiant. The reason I mention this is that the U.S.S. Defiant
was the only ship in Starfleet ever to have a working cloaking divice,
and none of the other Defiant-class ships had one. Keeping this in
mind there probibly won't be a cloaking device in the game for
Defiant-class starships. Actually, I know there won't be do to the
fact it is to difficult to add to the enemy A.I.
