Re: [LegacyUG] Search/Replace

2024-08-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Gloria,
That sounds very strange but it may possibly have something to do with
the accented character?

But it doesn't make sense to me.
The space between Given Names and Surnames is supplied in the output
where Given Name and Surname are put together. It does not come from
having a space at the end of the Given Names field.
In your Alt. Names do you have the  Surname in the Given Names field?
That's the only way I can think that the space could be missing.
If da Silva is actually in the Surname field for this Alternate Name,
please take this up with Support.

Thanks Cathy & Kathy for responding. I am seeing this in my alternate
names; 1) Search tab in the Family View, 2) Search Replace tab. In
that box is 1) Find Where, 2) Find What, and 3) Replacement Text.

Example of what I did that removed the space:
1) Alt. given names
2) Joao(with no space)
3) João(with no space)
I assume not having a space after 2) is what caused the problem. I now
have alternate names such as Joãoda Silva. It should be João da Silva.

Thanks again,
Gloria

I lost the space when I Searched/Replaced

Gloria, how did they lose the space?

Where are you seeing this?

If in a Report, make sure you are looking at it at 100% or greater as
at lower percentages the space and even some letters may not be clear.

How do you correct given and alternate names that have lost the space?
For example, what was once John Charles, _ with a surname or no
surname, is now JohnCharles,. I tried variations in the 'How to
Find' and 'How to Replace' in the Search & Replace to no avail. Does
this mean I have to correct each individual manually?

There are new options for Notes in Reports in Legacy 10 so go to the

Re: [LegacyUG] Sort / order by Last Updated - not available in v10?

2024-06-29 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,
I also only use one Legacy family file for all people of interest
whether they are linked into my main tree or not.

Updating when away from your normal computer and using another should be
no problem at all PROVIDED you travel with the latest version of your
family file AND you transfer the final version on your tablet back to
your computer before doing more work on the computer. You do have to be
using the same version of Legacy on both computers.

Since you've been customising columns in Index View did you see you can
save up to 10 sets of columns and then switch between them when
appropriate? Clicking the header row shows you the saved sets and you
can switch to another with another click.

Ian Thomas <mailto:il.tho...@outlook.com>

Cathy, thanks for that. I will do it that way in future, if necessary
- it will be quite straight-forward.

However, this is what I found expedient:
I added 2 fields to my view of the data, in the "travelling" version
of Legacy; those fields appear in Index View as Added and UpDate.
(I eventually found the fields when using Customise Index View
Columns, as "Date: Added to Family File", and "Date: Modified")

I was careful with both the Tag and the RINs - no problems encountered.

Because I had only 6 extra people added or modified while away, and I
was using a tablet with Legacy v9, it was simple to locate them that
way and export, and then import into my "home" version of Legacy. If I
had hundreds of modified records I can imagine complications and
confusion.

The "home" Legacy database is now upgraded to v10, as I mentioned (and
I like v10).

Because I have a reasonably large database now, having those 2 extra
fields is useful in itself (though I don't want to have to change or
import a large number of individuals that were added/modified within a
"travelling" version of Legacy).

A side comment: I find it easier to have a single database, with
sundry "non-family" persons added there rather than in a series of
separate Legacy database files. (Some individuals purported to be
related have turned out to be not. Others - they are merely of
interest to me. )

One database, one computer is easier for me. However, most of my
ancestors 2-3 generations back are in parts of UK and Ireland, so
updating when overseas may continue to be a problem.

Legacy file and then import just those people into your Legacy 10

Re: [LegacyUG] Legacy 10

2024-06-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

DeanAdams,
Thousands have upgraded without problems.
Some have had initial problems and sorted them. Some of those were user
created.

Here's an annotated listing of the suggested steps documenting the
problems that various people have had.
They mostly revolve around getting the actual installation file to
download and security software.

Here's the list annotated with solutions to issues people have
encountered during this simple process.

Here's the things to do to make the process as trouble free as possible.
1. Run File > File Maintenance > check/repair on your files. You should
be doing this regularly to keep your database healthy. If there are
errors reported run it again. Errors after the second run are the ones
that aren't auto-corrected and require your intervention. Fix them and
run again.
2. Verify that there are no broken media links. Tools>Media Relinker You
can fix them in Legacy 10 but you need to know they weren't caused by
the upgrade.
3. Backup your family file and media files. Preferably make sure you
also have these backups off your computer either in a cloud or on
external drive.
4. Download 10 from the website. Some people encounter problems because
a) they make a typo when entering their email address, b) the email goes
to spam or doesn't arrive. If it doesn't arrive try a different email
address c) the link in the email doesn't work and they need to copy and
paste the link to their browser. One person reported that his ISP
blocked unknown programs for 24 hours

5. Install 10 and enjoy.
Some people encounter problems with the installation because their
security software blocks it or part of it. Pausing the security software
during installation solves that. If concerned you can go into Aeroplane
mode/come offline for the installation,.
If there is any problem after installation RESTART your computer and it
is usually solved.

Some people are having problems with the Legacy FamilySearch module. The
login has been changed by FamilySearch and is now done in your browser
every time you open the Legacy FamilySearch module. The login
credentials can still be saved in Legacy FamilySearch so you don't have
to enter them every time. Reports say it is not working if you are using
a Ad blocker and tracking blocker on the FamilySearch site as the login
information has to be returned. Some are finding the browser tab is left
open. I see it open and close but the browser often stays open on top of
the Legacy FamilySearch module.

Yes there are some bugs in the new version that people are finding
particularly in new reports, but so there still are in Legacy 9 and
earlier. Only Legacy 10 is being updated with bug fixes.

Hope this helps
Cathy

There is an icon for Find A Grave in the Search bar. Is there one for
Billion Graves somewhere?

Jan,
I agree with Henry.
You really shouldn't be using a gedcom to go from Legacy to Legacy.
I would think there is something wrong anyway if it's taking so long for
just 30,000 people.

Cathy

Jan
WHY? Are you using a GEDCOM.
Make a copy (or rename your Legacy 9 file and just open it with Legacy 10.

Legacy 10 will convert your data and you will be off and running.

Just curious

Good Afternoon,

I have been a Legacy user for over 15 years and love the program. I
also have been a Mac user for longer than that…and have had to use
Fusion to be able to utilize Legacy. I have a fairly large database
with 30,000 individuals along with many notes for most of those
individuals. Yesterday I downloaded Legacy 10 at 6:00 PM. It took
until about 8:00 this morning before I could then import my data. I do
have a five year old MacBook Pro and having Fusion slows down both the
Mac and Legacy. My Legacy 9 data from a Gedcom is still importing 7
1/2 hours later and only partially loaded. Is anyone else having such
a slow transfer?

Many thanks,

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-18 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
Q1: Yes you should still set the Customise options I mentioned. It's the
program that you've probably pinned to the Taskbar, not a particular
database.
Q2: When you are happy you have your all your data in your Legacy 10
database you are always opening, yes you can delete other copies you
find elsewhere. A Legacy database is made up of the main FDB file which
has the Legacy logo and a number of other files that start filename> but have different extensions. You can delete them. What you
should keep are data backup zips - at least the last 10 for complete
peace of mind. Put them in the one folder. You only need the last 2 or 3
media backup zips.
The reason for keeping more data backups is that we don't always realise
there is a problem in the database until we go to a particular family we
may not have looked at for ages. The data backup zip zips together that
FDB file with the  others with the same family filename.
Legacy 10 now records in Options > Customise your backup folders. Again
see section 6.

To minimise the need to use a data backup, regularly do File > File
Maintenance > Check/Repair. Databases are like cars - they need regular
maintenance.
It's years since I've actually needed to use a data backup due to my
database becoming unhealthy but I still have some backups going back
decades. I restore an old one to see what progress I've made and
sometimes to retrieve people I remember researching but can't find. I
used to delete people I found didn't belong to the family but sometimes
I discover later that they do but in a different part of the family. I
no longer delete but just unlink.

Hi Cathy

I do have a question for you, if you don't mind; well 2 actually!
The 1st is that I usually pin the Legacy site to my task bar, but
should I also use those 2 Customize options that you suggest?
Secondly, I noticed when I was trawling through my folders and files,
that there are an awful lot from the past, ie Legacy 9, in various
folder formats. None of them will open when I try, so can I just
delete them all, and just keep ones from Legacy 10? TIA

It's good to hear you've found your family file.
Write down somewhere where it actually is.
Set Options > Customise 1.2 to open it automatically AND Options >
Customise 6.1 to the folder it is in.

Similarly, you can look for your data files using File Explorer.
Open File Explorer from the taskbar or right-click on the Start menu,
choose File Explorer and then select a location from the left pane to
search or browse.
Go to the drive where you store your data (on a basic setup it would
be C:\) and search (top right search panel) for ".fdb".

All your Legacy data files will show up.

Sarah,
Go back to the article I mentioned before re finding a lost file. Here's
the link again.
<https://legacyfamilytree.com/help-center/?a=I-lost-my-family-file---id--K-I9BVL_R5SkFN6sY2Vaeg>

It will be there somewhere. When you find it, since you don't seem to be
good at finding your way around your computer, put it in the Legacy
default folder for data where the Sample file is, since you seem able to
find that.   ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Data\ folder.

Then set Options > Customise 1.2 to open your file automatically.
Save your data backup zips to a Google Drive folder and make sure you
know how to use your data backup with File > Restore File.

In the backup dialogue you will see you can set the folder for backups.

Legacy 10 has been released and is free for everyone. It has all the
Deluxe features for free. It has the same look and feel as Legacy 8
and 9. It has some new features and reports and tweaks to existing
features and reports.
The new features are listed on the renewed Legacy website. The full
list is in this blog:

It's advised to be running Windows 10 or Windows 11. Not all features
are guaranteed to work on earlier Windows versions.
Here's the things to do to make the process as trouble free as
possible with some comments on where a few people out of the thousands
who have updated have been encountering problems. Note it will
overwrite Legacy 9. You can't run both versions as the settings are
all locked to the same folder ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\ folder 1. Run File > File Maintenance > check/repair on
your files. You should be doing this regularly to keep your database
healthy. 2. Verify that there are no broken media links. Tools>Media
Relinker You can fix them in Legacy 10 but you need to know they
weren't caused by the upgrade. 3. Backup your family file and media
files. Preferably make sure you also have these backups off your
computer either in a cloud or on external drive. 4. Download 10 from
the website. Some people encounter problems because a) they make a
typo when entering their email address, b) the email goes to spam or
doesn't arrive. If it doesn't arrive try a different email address c)
the link in the email doesn't work and they need to copy and paste the
link to their browser.
5. Install 10 and enjoy. Some people encounter problems with the
installation because their security software blocks it or part of it.
Pausing the security software during installation solves that. If
concerned you can go into Aeroplane mode/come offline for the
installation. If there is any problem after installation RESTART your
computer and it is usually solved. Have fun, Cathy

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
I've already given you the Support article on how to find a lost file.
Your file will be there.
You don't have to have Legacy at all to install Legacy 10. But if you
have Legacy you convert your earlier Legacy database into Legacy 10 format.
If you've been using Legacy, even a much earlier one, you can open your
current database -when you find it OR use your latest Legacy data backup
zip - you have been backing up haven't you?
Here's the Support file again:
<https://legacyfamilytree.com/help-center/?a=I-lost-my-family-file---id--K-I9BVL_R5SkFN6sY2Vaeg>

No you shouldn't reset your Laptop to an earlier time. Use the options
in the Support article or open Windows File Explorer and search yourself
for *.fdb files.

But my problem is that I can't update to Legacy 10, because I don't
have Legacy 9 to upgrade it from. Sure, I could install Legacy 10, but
then I would still have no tree there. I could create a gedcom from my

have an external hard-drive plugged into my laptop, so perhaps it
might be on there. But if it's gone from the laptop, it will probably

Should I reset laptop to an earlier time and see if it reappears,
perhaps? Thank you, Sarah

Legacy 10 has it's own big blue circle with a white "L.  Hover your
mouse over the icon, if it reads Legacy 9, delete it. That one won't
work. Since you updated, you no longer have Legacy 9 on your
computer.  Go to Start, show all apps, scroll down to located the
Legacy 10 icon.  At least, that was all that I had to do.  Then pinned
it to Start and I dragged the icon to where I wanted it.

Re: [LegacyUG] Tips for Updating to Legacy 10

2024-06-14 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
You will probably see your file in the Recent File list if you haven't
moved or deleted it.
The Recent File List is found by clicking the L top left corner of the
Legacy screen if the L is larger than the title bar. If it isn't, you'll
see a System Ribbon tab and it's on that instead. It depends on the
Design Style you are using.
Here's the support article on finding a lost file:
<https://legacyfamilytree.com/help-center/?a=I-lost-my-family-file---id--K-I9BVL_R5SkFN6sY2Vaeg>

It's possible that Options > Customise 1.2 is no longer pointing to the
file you want to automatically open.
It's also possible that you haven't set Options > Customise 6.1 and 6.2
to where you want your file to be.

Another possibility is that your Documents folder is inside OneDrive
because you asked OneDrive to sync it or you agreed to let Windows
backup your data. If so, you need to go to the OneDrive settings and
make sure it is keeping local copies of your files as well as syncing
them to the OneDrive cloud.

The solution is to do a file maint which, of course, raises this issue.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with Search/Find

2024-06-12 Thread Cathy Pinner

You don't use a Detailed Search to find a person in Legacy.
The quickest way is to go to Index View. In the Surname box at the top
type Surname, Given Name. it probably would show your person before you
finished typing the Given Name.
If you use the Given Name box, you type Given Names, Surname. Note the
comma. It's unnecessary to add a space after it before the other part of
the name.

The Name List search boxes work the same way.

Dolores,
For a male lineage you can use Reports > Chart Reports > Lineage.
For other lines and lines between any other two people who are related
use Tools > Relationship Calculator and see the Print options there.

Re: [LegacyUG] Ancestor Report - setting Private off

Ian,

I suggest you Reset the Report options and then choose your particular
options again and see if that fixes it. I'm not seeing it with someone
with Privacy Setting as Private and an AKA when I override the Privacy
options to include Private individuals so I don't think it is a bug. I
tested in 9.0.0.449. I haven't updated to the latest update .456 as I'm

For personal use, I want to set “Private” OFF in an Ancestor Report,
but I have one which I can’t affect.

This is what I have –

(made-up names substituted)

/Children from this marriage were:/

/6 i. Frederick Surname1 /

/ii. Frederica Alice Surname2 was born on (DOB) in Town, State,
Australia./

*/Another name for Private is Freda./*

It is the last line that I want to suppress.

Ancestry Report - in the Privacy Options for Report Options, I have
“ticked” the following -

include private individuals

    marriages

    child-parent relationships

none of the other Private setting there seem appropriate, to make not
private.

Ideas?

Re: [LegacyUG] A question about FAG numbers

2024-02-02 Thread Cathy Pinner

Dave,
Don't you use File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair regularly to keep
your database healthy? All databases need maintenance just like cars
need servicing.

Isn't it picking up your 0's as duplicates?
It's highly unlikely that Legacy will add code to check whether you are
entering a duplicate number when saving a new number since it has this
check in Check/Repair.

Hello fellow Leggers,

I have been placing a zero in the FAG field when I know there's a
grave but don't know the cemetery.  So YES I have duplicates but they
haven't been any problem to me or to running Legacy.

If the FAG field is made unique I will come up with some other method

somewhere else that I have not considered.

My program crashes often  and always has a duplicate or two in the
error report.
It is the only reason I can find for these crashes. It takes three

If you have an objection to making this field unique please post it/
If not and you agree with my poorly stated state of affairs, send a

Re: [LegacyUG] Unique identifier

2024-01-23 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jenny,
The RIN is fairly stable but not completely.
As Ian Macaulay says, when you find you have duplicates, one RIN is lost
and in addition may be re-assigned to someone in a completely different
branch.
Also occasionally people encounter errors that can only be fixed by
exporting your Legacy file to a new Legacy file. The RIN is not
necessarily preserved in this process though may be. At least now the
Added Date is preserved when you do that. I recall having to use
Microsoft Access to copy and paste them over to the relevant table as
best I could.

Name files with a convention that makes sense to you.
I mainly name with a code for the content. eg GRO B[for birth] Harris
1857, eg 1871 Harris Uxbridge for an 1871 Census. I don't include Census
or a code as I assume it for England but as I find people in Canadian
censuses I will include CACen. For photos I start with a code indicating
where the photo came from. eg the initials or name of the person. When I
scanned I used the name and an increasing number. So eg Eva137. Later I
added more detail to the filename. eg Marg 1962

Merge comes quickly to mind.  Rins will get messed up. Especially

Hi Jenny

I document my people by last name, first name, date of birth (or
approximate if I don’t know it) so I can sort on time if I need to and
then RIN number.  As you pointed out – it is unique and therefore
can't be confused.  I hope others use it. Using the RIN number has
often stopped me from making mistakes.  I also attach the RIN number
to all my source file names and any other documents or photo file
names I manage to collect over the years.

I have just watched a Legacy webinar on document filing and whereas
there was a lot of good sense spoken, one thing stuck out to me as
ridiculous.

The present prefaced her document filenames with the surname, forename
and year of birth of the person concerned.  he went on to say that if
there was more than one person with the same names and date of birth she
would include the death year.  That's fine if you *know* the birth
and/or death year of people and in the days when choice of names was
limited and infant deaths  numerous, it would not be surprising to have
2 people of the same name being born and dying in the same years.  And
how often does one not know the birth and/or death year of a person?

Why on earth not use the unique identifier provided by Legacy - the RIN.
This is generated by Legacy every time a new person is added to a file
(but the user has the option to swap these around if desired.)  Smith,
John 1234 or Doe, Jane 5678 is never going to be confused with anyone
else and is never going to change - even if you find out one day that
you have the wrong birth/death year for that person

I defy anyone to come up with a good reason why using the RIN is not the
best way to uniquely identify a person in a Legacy fie.  (There's a
challenge!)

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicate Marriage

2024-01-15 Thread Cathy Pinner

Wes,

You unlink the marriage you don't want. You do this from the Spouse List
opened with the icon under her in Family View.
You can't do that if there are children linked to that marriage so you
have to make sure all children are linked to the marriage you want to keep.
One way to sort this is to turn off Show 1/2 kids in the child area so
you can clearly see which marriage the children are linked to. You can
do that by right clicking in the area and toggling the View > 1/2 kids.
You can cycle through multiple spouses by clicking to the side of the
spouse with multiple relationships in the database.
Then to change the parents for a child, put them in the centre of Family
View and use their Parent list to link to the right set and unlink from
the wrong set.
You'll want to take note of the MRINs for each duplicate marriage to
make this process easier.

It certainly seems to!  I have just created a new file with 2
individuals and a couple of phoney Sources and added photos to the 2
Sources attached to a Birth and to an Event.  Another picture is
attached to a person in their Media Gallery.

In all cases, the pictures which have been attached have a + next to
the name when I view the folder under Picture Filename in the Picture
Centre.  Other pictures in the same folder which are not linked in any
way to the Legacy file have no symbol in the U column.

This does seem slightly at variance with "The U column to the left of
the file names indicates whether or not each picture has been attached
to someone in your family file already.  The + means that picture in
that folder has been attached to someone.  The - means that file name
has been attached to someone but from a different picture folder." as
stated in Help.  As I said, all 3 images in my test file have a + in
the U column although each is attached to only 1 Source and the Source
used only once.  In my working Legacy file I think the majority of the
Source images have a - in the U column.

I have separate folders for every Census and only save the image to
one relevant folder, so certainly in the case of Census images the
part about the fine name being "attached to someone but from a
different folder" definitely doesn't apply.

I don't think the Picture Centre lets you know if an image is linked to
a Source Citation. Only if it is linked to an individual or marriage.

You can't link images to Sources from the Picture Centre.

If you go instead to the Scrapbook (View > Scrapbook or Reports > Other
Reports > Scrapbook - they both take you to the same place) then there
is the option to choose just Master Sources and / or Source Citation
Detail and use Print Media File list to see further options and get the
list of linked media and what it is linked to.

Before clicking the Print Media File List button, note you can choose
what types of Media files you want included.

I would like, for example, to look at all citations of the 1881

Re: [LegacyUG] File savng and charting

2023-12-28 Thread Cathy Pinner

Sarah,
The recent file list will probably tell you where your file is. Put that
location in Options > Customise 6.1. If you want it somewhere else, you
can move a family file by using File > Rename File and instead of
renaming it, choose a different folder. You can save a copy of your
family file in a different location by using File > Save File As.
However it's best to not have multiple copies of your family file
scattered around your computer. Instead have multiple backup data zips
and make sure you know how to use File > Restore File.
You can set Options > Customise 1.2 to open the last used file
automatically. That I think is the default setting. I set it to open a
particular file in a particular location and do open the Sample file as
I'm a beta tester and mainly using a beta version of the program. But
when you're not a beta tester you can set it to open your preferred
family file.

Sarah,
Another way to find your file is to use the Recent File List but do
check your setting at Options > Customise 1.2. It must be set to open
the Sample file or you are somehow doing something that is losing your
settings every time. Do make sure that there is are local copies for
the files in the active/Windows recognised Documents file and that
some sort of occasional syncing isn't overwriting that with old
copies. I guess if that is what is happening it may interfere with the
Recent File list.
The Recent File List is found by clicking the L top left corner of the
Legacy screen if the L is larger than the title bar. If it isn't,
you'll see a System Ribbon tab and it's on that instead. It depends on
the Design Style you are using. You'll see a list of the files that
have been opened recently in order of opening and you click on the one

Re: [LegacyUG] File savng and charting

2023-12-26 Thread Cathy Pinner
What file, if any, opens when you open Legacy is controlled by Options >
Customise 1.2
The folder Legacy expects your data file to be in is the one you specify
at Options > Customise 6.1.
You do not have to use the Legacy Default of ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\Data\ folder
If you have your data file in folder that is syncing with the Cloud,
make sure it is keeping local copies on your computer.
The Documents folder may be in OneDrive depending on your OneDrive
settings. If OneDrive is on your computer, you often have to check
regularly whether it is keeping local copies and whether it has your
Windows Documents folder inside of it or not. It will have a Documents
folder probably but it may not be the one Windows is recognising. I
don't sync my Documents folder with OneDrive so the one Legacy uses is
not in OneDrive but there is still a Documents folder there.
Your Legacy settings are stored in ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\_AppData\ folder in whichever Documents folder is being recognised
by Windows. If you move the Legacy Family Tree folder or rename it, it
will be recreated with Legacy defaults.

I'd start by restarting your computer. That's a Restart which is a
complete clearing our of memory and starting. Unless you've turned off
Fast Start, the operating system is simply hibernated when you ShutDown.

The Restart may solve your Charting issue. If not, you may need to
reinstall Legacy. I'd first try reinstalling without uninstalling first.
Note Charting settings are held in ...\Documents\Legacy Family
Tree\LegacyCharting  So this is another thing that will be mixed up if
the \Legacy Family Tree\ folder has been moved or renamed or is syncing
with a cloud without a local copy being kept on the computer.

If Legacy isn't asking you to backup your file when you exit, then
either you haven't made any changes to the database or you have lost the
setting in Options > Customise 12.5 on the Prompts/Reminders tab.

Hope that helps.

You simply missed it in the list in Legacy News. You need a webinar

Re: [LegacyUG] Billing

2023-12-02 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,
Legacy will give refunds for webinar subscriptions that were just renewed.

Everyone needs to be clear that Webinars are available on a subscription
but Legacy is a one off purchase for a particular version. When a new
version is released there is an upgrade price.

As I said earlier in this thread, from posts in the Facebook group, it
seems many people don't realise or forget that they bought the program
and a webinar subscription together. It's just the webinar subscription
that is being renewed.
Normally an email is sent but emails don't always arrive for a variety
of reasons, so it's a good idea to keep track of subscriptions in other
ways or go into your account settings and turn off auto renewal. Check
whether this cancels your sub immediately or whether you can still use
it to the end of the subscription time.

Unless finances are very tight, I don't know why you'd do genealogy and
not have a webinar subscription as continuing genealogy education is
important and the Legacy Webinars are the cheapest way to polish your
skills and learn new ones.

She purchased Legacy about 2½ years ago using a credit card. Today she
noticed that Legacy has just taken on her credit card, an amount
equivalent to that of the initial purchase, without prior information,
without request for authorization, or any communication.

Has anyone ever experienced a similar situation?

Estelle,

This is probably a webinar subscription. For some reason, some people
don't get the email reminder that the subscription is due for renewal.
I think sometimes people don't even realise they bought a package for
Legacy that included the webinar subscription.
She can contact Sales if she doesn't want it now and they generally
reimburse.

Hi Everybody,

I have a strange issue with a brand new Desktop computer, wherein
Legacy itself might take 20-30 seconds to load at first start of the day.
It's quite disconcerting when it happens, especially as this machine
should be (and is) an absolute flyer.

My old desktop clunker was getting a bit long in the tooth, so the
guts of my upgrade is:

13th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-13700KF 3.40 GHz
Samsung SSD 990 PRO 2TB, M.2 NVMe
32 GB RAM
Windows 11 Home, Ver. 23H2, 64 bit
Legacy 9.0.0.443 with 10,000 names

I'm reaching out to see what others think of this, and I wondering the
obvious simple thing, like, is it an issue of a lack of memory ?
Should I double it to 64 GB ? Or make the RAM larger ?

The re-install of Legacy went fine, and without issue, and I continue
to carry on my research, do backups, and the odd bit of editing. As I
said after the first start of Legacy, all's well, and I can work away
all day if I like.

I thought there might be a slim chance this issue has been dealt with
before and resolved by a simple tweak, so I'd love to hear the
technical types throw their solutions my way.

Many thanks
David Cripps in Tasmania

Re: [LegacyUG] I am afraid I have another crazy question

2023-11-01 Thread Cathy Pinner

Angus,
Legacy won't necessarily go straight to the folder with your backup zips
in it, particularly if your backup location is an external drive. You
may need to navigate to it when using File > Restore File and you do
have to choose which backup zip you want to restore. You can restore to
a different filename and you should practice this. Call it test or
something. You can provide the new filename at different stages in the
restore process. Legacy will warn you if there is a file of the same
name in the folder you are restoring to and you can rename at that
stage. If you're not confident using a backup, it doesn't give you the
same peace of mind.  Once you've seen it restored and then with the
restored file open use File > Delete File.

It's far better to use the backup zip for your data than copy and paste
your Legacy family file with all its secondary files. The backup zips
them all together and adds a date and time to the filename of the zip.
Also far easier than copying and pasting files or dragging and dropping.

You can use the media backup as well but I keep my Legacy Media in
Dropbox and backup my Dropbox folders to external drives regularly so I
have a copy in the cloud and locally on external drives if my computer
fails. Media doesn't need to be backed up so often.

Cathy

Bob Austen

The computer won't necessarily 'find' your backup file - depending on
how you 'back it up".
If you do 'backup' when Legacy prompts you (or File/Backup) it will
backup to your computer. Then you can Restore it by going to File/Restore.
I do a quick backup to my computer whenever I do something a little
'risky' like a big merge.  To do that I go to the file location and do
a 'copy' and then 'paste' of the Family File. (you get a 'filename -
copy.fdb" file with date and time stamp)  I have a 1.5GB file and that
takes me _30 seconds_. If I do mess up my main file then I can delete
it and rename my copy so I can continue from the point before I
screwed up!

I also use this method to do a quick backup to a USB drive.
This doesn't backup the media but you could take the same approach
there. However I take a little differently for the media as I have
about 12GB and copy/paste takes quite a while.

I keep periodic backups of my Family file (using the copy/paste
method) to the main drive of my computer, a second backup to a second
hard drive on my computer, another to a flash drive, another to
Dropbox. I also have a backup drive connected to my computer.
Overly cautious, maybe, but I have been in IT for over 40 years and
have never had a catastrophic data loss.

What Jenny Benson stated about how to Backup your Legacy File is
accurate to a point but will the program find your file in the new
location. I am having major difficulty copying the file to another
location (e.g. external backup) in the event my computer crashes. I
would be grateful to learn the proper method.

Re: [LegacyUG] How to configure Family View ?

2023-10-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,
I also use Best Fit columns. If I want to see a grid with the children,
I switch to Descendant View and limit the number of generations showing.
You can change the View for the Child list as Margaret says or just
right click on the Child area of Family View and use View from the Right
Click menu. So you could move back and forth from the Child Grid if you
prefer it. I assume you know you can customise the columns for the Child
Grid, Descendant View and Index View and save several different sets and
switch between them easily.

Re: [LegacyUG] Reports - which would be appropriate?

2023-10-07 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,
I think you have to play with the reports and charts and also think
about what the group is interested in and how much they are interested.
I work with Descendant Charts from the relevant grandparents and then
ancestors with grandparents in the second generation. To do this I have
a fake person with a family photo as  "sibling" of my parent and run
Ancestor charts/books from that person but make them Invisible for
Descendant Chart/books.
However next time I'd include a chart from the best known set of great
grandparents showing just the lines to the second/third cousins known to
the family. To do this I'd do what I do to show relationship between DNA
matches. Use the Relationship Calculator Options to tag relationship
lines, then export the tag group to a new temporary file and chart from
there.

I would appreciate advice about some Legacy reports (and perhaps
charts – not sure).

I don’t use the reports much, and lately only those with (Legacy
Family Tree names) *Ancestor Book (#1) *and *Descendant Book (#2)*.

For a get-together of relatives on my father’s side, I want to
generate a small number of printed or PDF reports, though I can see
that those (#1, #2) when more than about 4 generations they can be
many pages.

Is there one that is suitable, that includes  ancestors of my father
and also includes his father _and all of his father’s siblings_, and
then those ancestors from his grandfather back several more generations?

(I think that reflects the interests of the group that will be meeting
in a few weeks).

Or would it be more appropriate to display those siblings (ie, those
at the level of my grandfather) in a separate report or as a cart?

*[lifespan]* is the available term - if using _Abt_ in the Born or

I would like to add a very simple enhancement to my Descendant Book
Report - at the very top pages

The Heading Layout has a section "Title at the top of Page 1"  where
the template is   Descendants of [*FullName*]

So, it generates *Descendants of David Thomas* - when within a
_Descendant view_ in Legacy interface, I have set a descendants of N
generations for that individual.

It would be nice to be able to enhance this to include the parameters
[*Birth Date*]  and  [*Death Date*] after the selected top-level
person's name.

Can I do that?

It would be nice to display *Descendants of David Thomas (Abt 1810 - 4
Jun 1887)*

.. and to have it nicely centred and placed on the pages, by
configuring the _Heading Layout_ within the designer.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Descendant Book Reports - configuration is a bit
convoluted, but excellent display

I have been creating some Descendant Book Reports and it appears to
have some peculiarities, which I thought were minor problems.

Specifically, I created a report with 5 generations, and with its Name
Index, 2-column, it was 23 pages in length.

It has a Table of Contents, and that has the very helpful First
Generation, Second Generation,   ..., Fifth Generation, and  Name
Index  page numbers.

(these were on pages 1,3,9,16,20, and 22)

For some reason, I was not getting a page number on any of the 23
pages. The Page Setup |  Headings and Page Numbers tab  seems to be
the place to set this to give a centred page number at the bottom.

Getting to the report settings for this is in itself a little
confusing: the Report Options tab at the base of the
configuration/settings needs to be selected, but it is the right
margin area of that - the non-coloured, narrow section with a box   [
Page Headers, Footers... ]  which must be clicked.

(a bit hard to describe - needs some step-by-step pictures of the
report settings)

Then, the Page Number Position section of that page requires attention
to select Bottom Centre.

No.  When you click on the Copy to Clipboard icon at the bottom right
of the Assigned Sources screen you are asked "The Source Clipboard
currently contains a Source.  Do you want to Overwrite it or Cancel?"
There are buttons for those options.  I could be wrong, but I don't
think you can switch off that prompt.

Jennifer,

I think you are talking about the Prompt for Detail on the Source
Clipboard so that you can change the detail before applying again.
I leave it on because I often change source on the clipboard and
forget I have.

But sure you can turn it off.
Look at the Source Clipboard screen when it is open.
See the checkbox lower left corner.
It is also controlled from Options > Customise 7.4
If you watch any of the webinars from Geoff Rasmussen you'll see he
works with it off but is far more disciplined than I am in applying
the particular source and detail to every field and person it applies
to before doing anything else.

Re: [LegacyUG] Sourcing

2023-09-18 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jane,
I don't understand what you mean.
When the Source Clipboard is opened with the triangle, you can change
the detail or you can change the Master Source on it. When it opens as a
result of having Prompt for Detail checked, you can only change the
source detail.
Whatever is on the clipboard is applied when you click to apply it to a
particular field or to all used fields. If you don't have Prompt for
Detail checked, you don't get to review what is on the clipboard.

One of the reasons I keep Prompt for Detail checked is that I often
change Master Source by right clicking on the Source Clipboard Triangle
and choosing a different saved source. I often save not just the Master
Source but "boiler text" for the Source Detail. I need to check which
Master Source is on the clipboard and adjust the Source detail as
appropriate.

Re: [LegacyUG] What does "Rebuild Source Citations" do?

2023-08-04 Thread Cathy Pinner

Fred,
No this won't check whether you've been consistent in your data entry
for sources. It's an internal database check.

What you can use for your task is the Source Citation Report. Use the
option to tag a Master Source and just produce the report for one or two
sources at a time or you'll be overwhelmed. Note the report has a lot of
options. It can just give a Master Source summary or it can include all
citations and who and what they're linked to.
If you want to see the Source List Name for your Master Sources you need
to use List Style.

Check all the tabs for the report.
Save the report to PDF so you can have it open and edit in Legacy as
required.

curiosity, I clicked on it, thinking another screen would pop-up which
would make it clearer what it was about, or would provide options.
Instead, it immediately went through my database to perform the

[LegacyUG] ***SPAM*** Re: Question - best method to export a subset to new Legacy database

2023-06-14 Thread Cathy Pinner

Ian,

How familiar are you with Advanced Tagging in Legacy? Read up on what
Entire Ancestor Tree tagging and Entire Descendant Tree tagging mean.
They are powerful but don't work usefully if there are multiple links
between branches in your family.

How familiar are you with using View > Trees to tag groups of people?
Trees does not auto update so don't forget to click Refresh. Each tree
is named by the person in it with the lowest RIN. You can use Tools >
Renumber RINs so that island of people are named by someone you
recognise or you can add a note in Privacy brackets to the name of
person in that tree with the lowest RIN.

Here are other ways to Split a File.

I wouldn't split if you intend to keep updating both files. I'd only
split in order to give part of my file to someone else.
If you need to collect together the media linked to the smaller file,
use the Media backup to zip it together. This won't affect what is
linked in the larger file.
You could then send that media to someone else or, if desired, unzip it
to a completely different folder and tell Legacy that that is where the
media for that file is. Options > Customise 6.2 is family file specific.
The Media Relinker can relink provided you don't change the actual
filenames.

I would appreciate suggestions from those more expert than I am in
using Legacy Family Tree program.

I decided some time ago to put “everyone” into the same .FDB file. I
find it easy to use the Tags and to search, and I am familiar with the
various “families” that do not actually relate at all to my tree.

But I want to export a fairly large number of individuals from one
“family”, to be used within a separate .FDB file.

There may be a tutorial at Legacy FT website, but I have not explored
that.

My idea is that I tag them, starting from the (several) most-recent
and working up (further in the past), thereby tagging and exporting
those from biologically unrelated families further in the “horizontal”
direction.

I do NOT want to delete those individuals from my main (very large)
Legacy database.

For those that I want to export, there would not be many/any
associated images or other entities (files) not within my .FDB database.

Is this a reasonable method? And what are the explicit commands needed
to get all (say) Tag 8 exported to a single .FDB file?

Re: [LegacyUG] How to retrieve a backup

2023-04-05 Thread Cathy Pinner

Di Christensen,

First tell your daughter to leave the Documents\Legacy Family Tree\
folder alone. If it is moved or renamed, it is recreated with default
settings which may be why a different file opened in Legacy. Helpful
people like to put all your genealogy in one folder etc etc and this
can't be done with this Legacy folder. You can choose to keep your data
and media and backups elsewhere but not the Legacy settings.

Second check your Recycle Bin for any .fdb files in case she deleted
your most recent file OR ask her where she moved stuff to.

Third, if you have a current/recent backup - the Backup zips have dates
as part of the zip file/folder name as well as times - then use File >
Restore File in Legacy and find the latest data backup zip file/folder
(the media backups have media as part of the filename) and restore your
file. If you get a warning that you are about to overwrite a file,
provide a different filename.

You could also search your computer in Windows File Explorer for *.fdb
files. You'll see some if you just click the Start button and type fdb

Yes
Use the Name List
You can either leave the RIN and customise the Print by adding the User

still need to customise the Print to include the User ID.

See the Options in the Name List for both Print and Show User ID in List.

That's the way.
I'm not an Excel guru either but it's pretty easy to learn to sort by a

You click the column header to highlight the column and then find Sort

There are YouTube videos that tell you how to do stuff like this. Also

Re: [LegacyUG] Still no solution regarding marriage records

Linda,
You are not doing anything wrong. Images linked directly to a Marriage
can only be printed as part of a Scrapbook. This has been the case since
Legacy was first released in 1998 and no solution acceptable to the
programmers has been found.
If you want a Wedding picture in your report, you need to link it to a
Marriage Custom Event. That way you can use the Event Notes to describe
the photo or the occasion ... It does not need to repeat the marriage
data. Call the Event Photo or Wedding Photo or whatever you like. Define
the Event Sentences for it. eg [CoupleFirstNames] on their wedding day.
or just [Notes]
Note if you want birth etc pics in a Book Report, you also need to link
them to a Custom event.

So, do I have to create another event within Marriage events which
says the same thing as what I already entered in the top section of
the marriage data?  That is redundancy and it does not create a nice
read on any of the report.

Or, do I created an Marriage event from the Individual Information
page? - then we are back to the repeating the same data and an awkward
printed report.

Re: [LegacyUG] 1921 England Census

2022-11-05 Thread Cathy Pinner

Jenny,
There is an English/Wales 1921 Census SourceWriter template. If you
haven't found it, you are behind in updating Legacy 9.  I'm not sure
whether something different will be required when Scotland gets around
to releasing it.

I haven't yet tackled how to source the 1921 Census as I've been waiting
for it to come on subscription. Now it has but I'm waiting until my sub
to FMP is due late December to upgrade for otherwise I would be kind of
paying twice. It's interesting but not vital to my research. I have
found a few people in the free search and confirmed a couple of
households via searching.

I understood from a very early webinar on the 1921 census that piece and
schedule number weren't enough as the schedule number can be repeated
for a particular piece. How easy it is to see the full TNA reference, I
don't know as I haven't paid to look at any transcripts or images.

I haven't found the UK 1921 Census easy to navigate either! The was
never a problem with the previous UK censuses but this one presents a
real conundrum.

I would also like to find out how others are handling it.

Thanks everyone

How are other LUGgers handling the 1921 Census, for which there isn't
- yet - a SourceWriter template?

Firstly, there seems to be some confusion about precisely what
comprises a "correct" reference.  Some people seem to think that
something along the lines of RG15-n-xxx will suffice (where n
is the Piece number and xxx the Schedule number, whereas others are
saying that this does not always relate to ONE individual record and
that to ensure that it does so it is necessary to include the tri-part
District Reference.

Secondly, unlike with earlier Censuses, including the 1911, the
address of the household is not shown on the "main image", nor any
reference information.  The address and Schedule number are shown in
two separate images.  To provide a fully authentic Source citation,
need one include all 3 images?

I have only accessed a couple of 1921 records so far and the best
method of recording them seems to be to use the template for the 1911
Census, typing a space in the first field (otherwise RG78 is
automatically included in the citation) and leaving the 2nd field
blank, but filling all the other fields as indicated.  It may be
"overkill" to include all this, but it makes for consistency with the
1911 Census.  So far, I have only included the main image with each
citation.

Re: [LegacyUG] Using a cloud service

2022-10-20 Thread Cathy Pinner

Dave
Dropbox and iDrive are two completely different types of cloud service.
iDrive is primarily a cloud backup service.
Dropbox began as a cloud syncing service to sync a folder from your
computer to the cloud and optionally to other devices. So it has a
dedicated folder on your computer that in many ways works the same way
as any other folder but it also syncs to the Dropbox Cloud copy.

I use Dropbox and I have my Legacy linked media in a Dropbox sub-folder.
Then in Legacy I tell Legacy that is where my Legacy Media is using
Options > Customise 6.2
I backup Legacy data to a Dropbox sub-folder so my I have a backup out
of the house in a minute or less (used to take 5 minutes plus but I now
have a faster internet connection).
I don't use the Legacy media backup as my media is already organised
under one folder and it is already both on my computer and in the
Dropbox cloud. In addition I backup my Dropbox folder to external hard
drives periodically so I have a local backup.

I could keep my Legacy family files in Dropbox. If you do, you have to
make sure that they are only being accessed from one computer at a time
and you allow for the syncing up to complete and the syncing down to
complete before opening Legacy on another computer. Otherwise you'll get
conflicted copies.
It's also a good idea to pause syncing while doing File Maintenance >
Check/Repair. If you don't you may encounter errors.
If I kept my Legacy family file(s) in a Dropbox sub-folder then I'd tell
Legacy that's where they are at Options > Customise 6.1

What you can't do is move the whole ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\
folder into Dropbox and expect to keep your Legacy settings that are
saved in ...\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\_AppData\ folder
When Legacy doesn't find that folder in your Documents folder, it
recreates it using Legacy default settings.

Learn how Dropbox works. It can now be used as a more extensive cloud
backup service but when you're thinking about Legacy it's probably the
syncing aspect that you are interested in so you can use Legacy on
different computers with both connected to the cloud.

Hope that helps explain the basics of using Legacy with a cloud service
like Dropbox.
If you just want backup, iDrive is fine. You leave Legacy stuff where it
is and just choose to backup those folders like your Documents folder.
Again you need to learn how it works.

Re: [LegacyUG] Delete Family File

Jack,
When you use File > Delete File, it deletes the currently open file

It sounds like there's not a problem if something does go wrong as you

Jane,
Your PDF reader will have a Search function.
I'm not in the USA so putting location first makes no sense to me but I
understand it does in the USA.
Re your books - in the Source List Name you can put what family or area
is covered - you don't have to stay with the Title in the Source List Name.
I also add that type of data when sourcing online trees. I rarely just
have an online tree for the source unless it's for the tree owner and
their immediate family - but I like to include trees if they've provided
major clues. The Tree name often doesn't reference my family of interest
so I'll add desc. of our common ancestor.

Is anyone familiar with importing an old .paf file into a new Legacy file?

I know it can be done directly from *.paf into Legacy, but I am
experiencing a problem that needs to be fixed. It has to do with
importing census events. During the import, census events are created
as such; however the census data itself is placed in the General
Notes, rather than within the census event. Thus, when creating a
descendant report, the information is not presented as it should be.

There are simply too many of these to try to cut 'n paste or drag 'n
drop. I would hope there is some way in the import setup to make sure
the data is placed within the census event.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Ancestry etc online trees don't have all the fields for data that
Legacy has and even when they do, they don't use a Gedcom the same
way.  eg uploading to Ancestry - Notes don't go in a public field and

It's not a good idea to upload to an online tree, add data to the

data in an online tree and in Legacy. You can use Ancestry tags to

Re: [LegacyUG] When Cousins Marry

2022-08-16 Thread Cathy Pinner

Crystal,
Take a look at the Title Page before you Preview. Perhaps you set it for
a particular person at a different time.

When creating a Multiple line of Descent Report, for it to be in any
rational order, look at the pedigree view for the person for whom you
want all descendants of their ancestors in the one book. Then working
from the top down, collect the MRINs.
Make sure you set it to Not repeat duplicate lines, then everyone will
be included for the first couple but the others will stop when they
reach the generation where the descendants would repeat what has already
been included.

Yes if you have a large tree, you will end up with a very large "book".
I wouldn't even attempt it these days except for a very restricted
number of generations.

It's not an error message when you are told it's a duplicate line.
If you want the data printed twice click the Report Options button, go
to the Format tab and turn off "Don't repeat duplicate lines".

Larry,
Have you reset the Report Options using the Reset button and chosen your
options again.

If you are using the latest build, this is not something others are
reporting for this build. I can't reproduce it but I may not have found

If the Reset doesn't work, I suggest you contact Support so they can

Cathy,

Thank you for the reply. I am using the latest - "Installed Version:
9.0.0.414" and running it with the most recent version of Windows 10
Professional.

Results are the same with either "Preview" or "Print" or "Preview AND
Create PDF".

I don't understand why this occurs with a "Descendant Book" report and
NOT with a "Descendant Chart". Something is amiss...just don't know
what or why. As an aside, I never updated to the prior version due to
the wording bug that was present. When this version (.414) was
released, it appeared, that had been fixed and I opted to update.
There is no going back, unfortunately.

Any ideas graciously accepted.

Larry,

I seem to remember this was a bug some time ago. Have you updated your

Is this in the Preview of the report or when you are saving a

Re: [LegacyUG] Detailed Search - How Long? Not Responding

2022-07-22 Thread Cathy Pinner

Larry,
There are some strange speed issue things sometimes especially with
large databases. There is discussion of one thing that helps in this
article. It's counter intuitive. Use less cores.

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-01072/9/Legacy-Family-Tree/If-Legacy-is-really-slow-try-this.html

Re dates in the search.
Just enter in the order you normally do. eg for 15 Jan 2001 I just enter
15 1 2001

That matches my region setting date entry.

With your search you don't give the connectors between your conditions.
I find it easier to use all AND or all OR or do two searches with the
second searching the search list. For some reason I can't get my head
around the logic of using the mix of AND and OR so it's quicker for me
to do two searches.

Larry Lachance wrote:

2. Individual; Surname; Equals
3. Individual; Death Date; AFTER (tried specific date 15 JAN 2001 and

After 5 minutes I get “not responding” – Somehow I think I might need
to include the date in a specific format but don’t know what that
might be or even IF it needs to be.

How long SHOULD a search like this take (in excess of 190,000
individuals)?

I understand OS, RAM, and CPU have much to do with this however I note
that the machine is quite fast running Windows10 Pro with 64 Gb RAM
and Intel Core i7-8700K CPU which combined should be quite fast
enough.  I have both the latest version of Legacy AND the latest
updates as well.

Thanks for any insight –

Re: [LegacyUG] Installing Legacy 9 on second computer

2022-07-19 Thread Cathy Pinner

Robert
Download the free standard version from the Legacy website.
Then install on your new computer and use your customer number to unlock
the Deluxe features.

Then you need to copy your data. If you plan to use both computers you
have to decide how you are going to keep the database in sync.

There are various options:
1. You can keep both your working database and your media in one of the
cloud syncing services like Dropbox or OneDrive or GoogleDrive.  If you
do this you must make sure the sync is allowed to finish after closing
Legacy on one computer before waiting for the sync to finish on the
other computer before opening Legacy on it.
2. you can keep your working file and media on a flash drive/thumb drive
and move that to the other computer. If you use this method, a) make
sure you always open the file that is on the flash drive and b) make
sure that small flash drive is always backed up elsewhere - preferably
more than one other place, including the hard drives of both computers
as a) they're easy to lose and b) when they fail it's very difficult to
recover data from them.
3. you can make or transfer backups to an external drive and then
restore them on the other computer. This is easily done for the data
backup - media backups are trickier to restore and you probably don't
want to do that constantly.

Re: [LegacyUG] To print a list from database of family by descendants

2022-07-17 Thread Cathy Pinner

Valerie,

If you just want the surnames then you want a Surname Summary Report
under Reports > Other Reports BUT to confine it to just one line of your
tree, you need to tag using Advanced Tagging, descendants only and
export that line to a new Legacy file and create the report from that
new file. Do use File > Delete File after generating the report so you
don't add to your confusion of multiple files.

Do you want the names in Alpha order or as a Descendant Tree?
In Alpha order you need to tag the Descendants only using Advanced
Tagging and then go to the Name List and click Search > Show all

Then Options > Print and just choose the name.
As a Descendant Tree - Reports > Chart Reports > Descendant and turn

to click the Report Options button and then the Format tab and use the

Re: [LegacyUG] Potential Problem Report

2022-07-16 Thread Cathy Pinner

Douglas,
PP = Potential Problem - the subject of this thread.

Tag is a way to group people in Legacy. There are 9 tags. You can see
the tag boxes on Family View if you turn them on at Options > Customise 1.5

There are also Hashtags in Legacy 9 as 9 tags were never enough.

I now use Hashtags for more permanent groupings of people and Tags for
temporary groupings or more groups I want to be able to see more easily
on Family View.

You can use Tools > Advanced Tagging to tag numbers of people at the
same time. You can also get to Advanced Tagging by right clicking a tag
box or when in the Name List/Search List by clicking the Options button
and choosing Advanced Tagging.

You can Hashtag a group of people all at once provided you can search
for the people you want. Then click the Options tab in the Search list
and Add a Hashtag to everyone in the list.

You should read the Help from each of these screens. The Help button
takes you straight to the relevant part of the Help file.

Yes Ian,
Look at each tab and you'll find you can tag people with a PP.
You may want to adjust the criteria and so tag only people with the
same issue.
Once checked, you can also mark as not a problem but beware those with
mother older than 50 - the child may be the child of an unmarried

Re: [LegacyUG] "Dropped ?"pictures in a media backup

2022-07-12 Thread Cathy Pinner

Linda,

Sorry, I'm not sure I'm following quite what you have done.

I don't think you can link to the photos within the media backup zip
using the Media Relinker. I hope you can't.

Is the Media Relinker telling you still you have 71 missing photos? If
so, perhaps you need to extract from the backup zip that has them in it.
Use Windows File Explore to extract all and it will put them where they
were. No that won't remove the new pictures. As Henry says, you'll only
have a problem if some of the file names are the same.

Do a new media backup AFTER the Media Relinker tells you that all files
are linked - no broken links - not before. This new media backup will
take the place of the ones you have.
Make sure you backup to an external drive or a folder that syncs to the
cloud or you haven't really got a backup. A backup on your hard drive is
useless if your computer fails, especially if it is the hard drive that
fails.

The other reason that photos aren't in the media backup is that the path
has got too long. Though it sounds as if you haven't rearranged your
photos.
The path from drive letter to the end of the file extension has to be
less than 260 characters. But there is some interaction with the number
of folder layers as well, so it's best to keep it under 200 characters.
C:\Users\Cathy\Documents\Legacy Family Tree\Media\image.jpg  is 59
characters.

You have actually checked that there really is only one family file?
Many people who believe they only have one family file discover that
they actually have more than one and didn't realise.

Regards,
Cathy

Thank you Cathy for your quick response; I have made the media backup,
relinked but this didn't solve my issue.   I have not renamed them,
nor moved them. So,I think I need to rephrase my problem.

There are 71 digitized images that WERE on my C drive in the correct
folders (a setup that I have been using for several years).  Those
images ARE on the June backup. There were no missing links or images
when I did the June backup.  Then I had to take a break from doing any
research with this family.

Last weekend I began working on this family again and added many
images from a new resource and did a backup. I get the report that I
am now missing 71 digitized images  and they are not the new ones that
I just added.  The links to the missing 71 are to the correct folders
- I have done the relink. and yes, that is where they are supposed to
be.  But the images are NOT on the July backup nor anywhere on my
computer EXCEPT in that June backup which is in PC > Documents >
Legacy Family Tree > Data > and then the folder for that particular
family.  The relink now connects to the photos in the backup. but the
images are not on my computer other than in that backup. I don't know
where those images went or how they got deleted.

So my question is:  How do I get those photos back onto my C drive
where they belong instead of just in a backup.  I can't move them, I
can't copy and paste them as I don't see those options available; I
can't email them to myself to resave and then relink.

If I do a media restore, then I will lose the new images I've been
doing recently, correct?

To clarify, I have all my Legacy on my desktop; data is entered only
on this desktop and there is only the one family file.

sigh,

Linda

Your list of media folders will show [Default Media Folder]\... if the
start of the folder path was the path listed at Options > Customise 6.2
when you started using that folder. Otherwise it will show the full
actual path. If the full path is the same as what is now at Options >
Customise 6.2, you can use Search > Search and Replace on Lists - Media
Folders to change the constant part of the path to the code. Make sure
you only replace the found part of the path. Make a backup first in case
you get one of the settings wrong. Then if you mess them up you can
restore your data backup and try again.
Changing computers or changing the location of your media is very easy
if the Media Folders use the code. You just have to reset 6.2 to the new
location and all media is relinked.

Do check that you haven't been inadvertently using two different family
files. If they're all still on your computer, the ones you've opened
will show in the Recent File list. The Recent File List is found by
clicking the L top left corner of the Legacy screen if the L is larger
than the title bar. If it isn't, you'll see a System Ribbon tab and it's
on that instead. It depends on the Design Style you are using.

Any guidance on process to copy and paste the missing ones into the
current database?  By the way ALL of my pictures and documents are in
a series of folders located on my C drive named Genealogical Images,
which is also designated as my default. But yet when I do a view

I still like my paper copies and notebooks and this reinforces it.
How much other stuff is now missing, dropped and lost from my backups?

Re: [LegacyUG] To print a report ???

Valerie,
It sounds like you want a Family Group Report with the Report Options
checked to include Events for the couple and for the children.
If you want Event Notes, make sure on the Include tab of the Report
Options you not only check to include events but click the Event Options
button and choose the items you want.
You can also check on the main Family Group Report screen to include
Chronology Report at the end of the Family Group Report.

The answer is Yes.
You can use the Legacy Report under Chart Reports > Ancestor Chart. Just
turn off the dates option in the Report Options.

Or you can use Legacy Charting and change the Theme to Compact.
Note both the Ancestor Chart Report and the Legacy Charting Ancestor
Chart have other formatting options.

Re: [LegacyUG] Building a Book for Publishing

2022-06-09 Thread Cathy Pinner

Cindy
You need to become familiar with the various reports before you try
combining them in the Publishing Centre.
Legacy provides a myriad of options for each report, including, for some
reports, a number of different numbering systems. Someone else can't
really tell you which to use. Experiment with just 2 or 3 generations
and see what you prefer.
Non-genealogists usually find a Descendant Narrative book easier to
follow than a Descendant Book but people differ. In a Descendant Book,
it is arranged by generation and the link between the generations is the
number assigned to each person when they are first listed in Child List.
The Descendant Narrative book is ordered by family and you can use the
numbering system to find the next child in the original family. There
entry may be pages away if the previous child had a lot of descendants.

I can think of a couple of ways, but do it on a copy of your tree
rather than the master.

1. Tag all of your wife's ancestors, and her. But you then need to
find and add all of the spouses, siblings, parents etc. Then you can
export the tagged records.

2. Preferably, I would remove your marriage and leave your children
with only one of you. You should then find that you have two trees
within the file. If it is still one then you have a link between both
sets of ancestors which you need to resolve. Once you get it to trees
then you can export one of them, or just remove one and keep the other.

Personally, and especially within a single family tree, I would never
split it. It is better to just have one tree with the same set of
locations etc, and it resolves issues with crosslinks further up.

Fran,
It's necessary to use Tools > Set Relationships after adding, deleting,
merging, unlinking, relinking people in your database.  When I'm
entering data I use it at least once a day.

It sounds like either you haven't got View > Show 1/2 kids on - from the
right click menu in the child area of Family View OR that you want the
children attached to multiple sets of parents.

http://support.legacyfamilytree.com/article/AA-00537/14/Tips-and-How-Tos/How-to-add-multiple-and-single-parents-to-a-child.html

Also as part of your file maintenance, don't forget to backup and then
use File > File Maintenance > Check/Repair regularly - depends how much
data entry you do. Regularly at least once a month if you don't use
Legacy a lot, every week if you enter data every day.

Is there anybody here who uses the “Families” app with success or can

If you want the FS ID on FamilyView then you need to customise the labels.
Here's how:

I have several sets of labels for FV depending on what I'm doing. I
usually combine birth and baptism on one line and death and burial on
one line.
Another way of finding these people is to open Legacy FamilySearch and
look for the Red links. You can filter by Red links

Here's how they work:

Also make sure the FS arrows are working for you. Then a red arrow
indicates a change. You can turn them all green in Legacy FamilySearch

have finished sharing button. You can click this whether you've shared
