Re: [slim] New approach to dead Boom / SB3 (Classic) / Transporter
Too lazy to dig up the datasheets for those memories but I suspect they are rated at 10,000 or even 100,000 erase cycles. I feel it is unlikely wear should be an issue when used in this application. Since the erase operation is rather slow, sometimes you don't erase and overwrite when using this kind of device to store small data structures such as player settings, instead you invalidate one setting entry and then append a new. This way you normally don't waste an erase cycle each time you change a setting. Just speculating, have no idea if any of this is how it's done in the SB. And for more speculation. Perhaps some power glitch could be derailing the state machines inside the Flash that perform the low level erase/write operations, leaving stuff half erased/written? Especially since the failures were triggered when playback was about to start. Now, given that this happened after you had replaced a bunch of capacitors that were past their prime the voltages should be cleaner than before, there's a lot to contradict this theory, but maybe it's still worth looking for ripple or spikes on the voltages. Anecdotally, I've seen some weird issues in some consumer electronics when I replaced electrolytic caps of questionable pedigree with the best stuff I could get my hands on, seems like the design was tuned for the low budget components. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117140 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] New approach to dead Boom / SB3 (Classic) / Transporter
Sorry for being vague, shouldn't have formulated a question before my first cup of coffee. I was thinking of the model of the memory device. But from your answer I can deduce roughly what kind of Flash it is. Flash of that generation usually have pretty much no data retention problems, but heat can accelerate the process so maybe using a hotplate for soldering could potentially be an issue. Never had a problem with data loss in normal circumstances, some 15 years ago I came across a few memories where single bits had been flipped, but that was on outdoor equipment where we suspected lightning could have been involved. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=117140 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

If you decide to test the power supply by measuring voltage, please note that it must be connected to the Squeezebox. As far as I understand, complete lack of sound on this family of players can often be fixed by reprogramming the Xilinx device. chopinhauer wrote: > But if Logitech pulls the plug surely at least my current set up will > still work. Correct? Correct, up to a point. It won't halt the minute Logitech shuts down the servers, but it may still affect you in a longer run. Considering that the Squeezeboxes were always a bit of a niche product, and how long it was since it was dropped, there is still a pretty robust ecosystem and user base. It's obviously not on an upward trajectory, but there are some heroes that manage to keep it relevant with new adaptations and additions in reaction to how use patterns and delivery methods change. If servers were shut down and this forum closed the natural hubs that some of this work depend upon are lost. Fully replacing them will not be trivial if at all possible and that could, in a pessimistic scenario, lead to the end of support and development. For a user that only use a local music library and a handful of plugins it would not immediately change anything, but you could experience a gradual loss of functions. If you need to migrate your server to a more recent operating system, LMS may not fully operate on that without updates, new network security protocols may block crucial resources for LMS or plugins etc. It is very much a community effort today, but the community is helped by the resources Logitech supplies. Sounds like doom and gloom, but what I'm saying is that life with LMS will be easier for all of us as long as it is a maintained product. It could very well go on for years without Logitech sponsorship, but I don't think a transition would be without major hassles, resources scattered and some developers losing interest. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=111525 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] creating a current playing display
I tried a different take on this, casting the web interface, in this case the Now Playing of the Material skin, to the Google Nest Hub. The word to note here is the "casting" bit, my home automation controller (Homey) allows me to cast a web page to a specific Chromecast player, but I'm sure there are software available to be run on our servers that can achieve the same thing. The key is that it's the server that initiates this instead of you pointing your display to a specific source. In many cases I think this can be beneficial, perhaps the community can come up with more ideas based on this. One thing to remember is that this particular setup can not be both controller and player. I can use the castbridge plugin to play on the device, but that stream will replace the stream with the control interface and vice versa. Perhaps this could be solved if it was integrated in the same plugin, but as the sound from this device is far from exciting, I don't care. Anyway, I got a tidy interface on my device with minimal tinkering. 27887 +---+ |Filename: hub_control.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=27887| +---+ alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=110757 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Two common faults that can give those symptoms are the external power supply and the WiFi board. Since you have a spare SB3, have you tried with the power supply from that one? Next would be to open the unit and remove the WiFi board and test it using ethernet cable? Both power supply and WiFi board should be possible to source on eBay e.g. If none of that helps, there are capacitors in the internal power supply that could be past it. There does seem to be something amiss with your server, looking at the output from the web interface, but I doubt it's the cause of this problem. You say you use ethernet, but do you have a cable connected straight to the router or do you use some kind of powerline ethernet plugs? These can become a bit unreliable. Also, do you use any kind of firewall or anti-malware software on the PC? Reserving an IP address for the PC will ensure that it will always get the same IP address, it shouldn't affect this issue, but I admit it's a bit strange that the PC gets different addresses. Often the router will assign the same address on the next boot. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=109713 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Nevermind that the IP-address changes, that's a red herring, but the fact that you get an IP-address in the right range automatically indicates that quite a lot is healthy. Two likely culprits: There has been quite a few failed WLAN boards which can cause different symptoms, often reboots. This can be verified by removing the board and testing the unit using wired network. Replacement boards are reportedly available on eBay. The power supplies are notorious for failing and generally causing reboots. If this is suspected, 3rd party replacements are dirt cheap. What's a bit different in your case is that you have to go through the setup again. I don't think that's usually the case for the faults mentioned above. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Classic failing
The two most common problems with SB3, by far, seems to be WiFi boards and power supplies losing steam. You can find decent aftermarket PSUs with the right connector from China for "peanuts", and if you can run wired then you can just remove the WiFi board. Either of those fixes seem to revive the majority of SB3s. If you have a Touch you can try with that PSU, it should work, or maybe someone you know have a SB you can borrow a PSU from and see if it helps. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=108576 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

When you say it went dark, is it just the display that is affected or is it completely off line? If it is completely out, i.e. not playing and not seen from LMS or Mysqueezebox then I'd start looking at the power supply. They have a tendency to act up, but replacements are readily available on Ebay, Aliexpress et al. Sadly the cheap replacements aren't always the best quality, but at the price I can't complain if they only last 4-5 years. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=71402 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

But those other companies could just as well have folded during the financial crisis the years after the sale and taken the Squeezebox with them. In my mind Sonos and Squeezebox don't have an awful lot in common, and it was the market for Sonos-like product that took off while the market for Squeezeboxes withered. The Squeezebox was an idea whose idea had come, and gone. Re: [slim] Logitech should resurrect squeezebox
Short answer: Nah, at least not a Squeezebox brand based on the architecture we know and (mostly) love. Don't get me wrong, I think the Squeezebox ecosystem is genuinely amazing. There seems to be no limit to the adaptability and extensibility, constantly made to run on new platforms with new exciting integrations like voice control. But I don't see any market large enough for a resurrected Squeezebox line. The "unique selling point" of the package, the jewel in the crown, is LMS. Mysqueezebox is an afterthought and doesn't offer anything the competition already does equally good or better. Since the download market has dropped sharply and CD sales as far as I know are in a slow decline, it seems users having a local media library is a narrowing niche in the market. And sadly, to capitalize on the power and flexibility of LMS, there is a bit of a learning curve. It becomes very obvious when things like the recent changes to Spotify streaming that a lot of users haven't fully managed to understand this glorious concept, and I don't blame them. The Squeezebox was a reasonably priced player that came at a time when there were few alternatives, no online streaming services, no smartphones or bluetooth speakers. It was primarily aimed at users with a bit of computer skills that wanted to play their ripped CDs (and whatever MP3s could be found on Napster et al) through a stereo system. A bit of tinkering came with the territory and wasn't a problem, when you got it working it was in every sense a huge leap forward over hooking your computer to the sound system. Today you get a Spotify client in your TV or your receiver, bluetooth speakers are ubiquitous and if you have a music library at all it's often on your phone. Among "audiophiles" you may still find people interested in maintaining a music collection, but they aren't going to sully their pristine signal chain with some cheap plastic thing from a keyboard manufacturer so they aren't going to help the sales. A "dumbed down" product aimed primarily at online streaming (like UE Radio) is probably the only thing that would make any sense for Logitech, but I doubt it would have an easier time now than it did when it was cancelled in 2014. The phone (that people already use to access Spotify) and a decent speaker does the same thing. I think the Squeezebox as a concept will live on for a long time, maintained and supported by enthusiasts. The ride will inevitably be a bit rocky when Logitech pulls the plug on their servers or assigns M Herger to other tasks, but I believe it will survive that too. As much as I wish there were new players for sale, I don't see it happen, but I keep enjoying the great system I have in LMS and have no plan to stop using it. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=107821 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] FNG. Old Touch. Unable my music Any help appreciated.
In short, to use a networked music player, you need a working network, start with getting that sorted before you do any more troubleshooting on your Squeezebox system. I assume your No 1 router is the one connected to your modem or equivalent on its WAN side and that you then have a wired connection to your PC on the LAN, if so that's pretty much the best practice. If the WiFi part of that router doesn't provide enough signal for your premises there are a few methods to improve coverage. The best method is to add access point(s) where signal is weak. The access point may be a dedicated device, or you may configure a router with WiFi to act as an access point. This is then connected via wire to your router. A different method would be to use WiFi repeaters or range extenders, yet another would be to use powerline ethernet adapters to set up a wired connection to your Touch, but it gets increasingly hit-and-miss the further you stray from the proven solutions. If you have 2nd router wired to your No 1 router I suggest to check if it can be setup as an access point, at a minimum you should disable DHCP on it. alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103300 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

What you didn't just almost say was: IMO, we should refuse to have anything to do with the UE stuff on the Squeezebox forum. Let's see how well Logitech cope with supporting their users without additional resources from the community. And that seems a bit petty to me, what would the SB community gain from that? Wouldn't it better justify the continued existense of this forum if it provided some help for UE users too? UE is here, SB is soon gone from the market and I don't think we are likely to change that by turning our back on the users who hop on the UE train now, simply because they were too late to catch the SB train (or couldn't figure out where to buy the SB ticket as it were if you think bout the marketing). pallfreeman wrote: They may even think we're being bloody-minded and stubborn because we want to carry on with *this* forum. None of the firmware for the real slim devices have ever been open source I believe and it's not likely to change, for the fatter devices (Touch, Radio and possibly Controller) some source is available, some isn't. For the older products we can pretty much forget a third party FW, for the more recent devices it's technically not trivial (legal issues aside) and I rather doubt there will ever be a third party FW based on Logitech sources. Then again, you haven't been treated to the european MSB experience. It's the definition of intermittent. From a computer on ethernet I can sometimes access the web page, my SB3 is freqently disconnected for longer or shorter periods, if I use the diagnostic feature of SBS it reports communication failure with MSB (currently only on port 9000). It's just the way the server available to us over here works, it can be rock solid for a long time and then without warning (and most notably without any explanation from Logitech) it starts going up and down like a yoyo for months on end. Often it's only one protocol at a time that's unreliable, thus only one class of equipment is affected (slim or fat clients). And as you could see in the thread on the official forum, Logitech isn't likely to open a support ticket on this issue. Oh BTW, it's my estimation that messing about with fixed IP addresses has caused more problems for SB users in total than it has solved. A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88915 Question: Why recommend someone to get a Squeezebox ? - Its excellent audio quality - Best price/performance on the market - Excellent hardware/software quality of the whole solution - Great support for online streaming services - Great support for browsing and playing local music - The possiblity to extend it to multiple rooms later on - Its support for third party plugins - The possibility to directly interact with Logitech regarding new features/bugs - This community and forum - I wouldn't recommend a Squeezebox to anyone Going to myself, I believe most answers will reflect the reasons what we enjoy with SB. When (or if) I would recommend it to someone else, the reasons I would refer to would very much depend on who that person would be. For my nieces, the access to Spotify would make the Touch interesting, for my cousins wife the access to radio stations from her home country would make the Radio viable, for my colleague with an interest in obscure death metal it would be niche radio stations, for another colleague with an enormous CD collection it would be possibility to efficiently browse the collection, possibly adied by clever plugins. Then there's a lot of people for whom I don't think it would be a good solution at all. Possibly it would have been more interesting with a poll about our reasons for not recommending an SB product. I'm not sure it's as simple as saying that people with little interest or knowledge in computers would be unable to have a pleasant SB experience. In my experience it's often the more enthusiastic and knowledgeable computer users (tinkerers basically) who tend to run in to the most difficult problems. Sometimes due to more complex network setups, sometimes due to more software conflicts. People with little interest in computers often have more or less plain vanilla systems and generally don't mess with them which mostly keeps them out of trouble, -- alfista alfista's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=32396 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88915 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
