Hey all-

This is the first time I have posted to the forum.  I have two FeLV positive
cats, one two and one three years old.  The older cat has never had any issues
with illness whatsoever, but the younger has only recently started showing
signs that her illness has caught up with her.  Just within the last few days
she has become very lethargic, stopped eating (and only drinks a small amount)
and whenever she stands or walks she seems very unsteady and wobbly.  I took
her to the vet yesterday; they checked her blood counts which were low and
said her kidney enzymes were elevated.  They also said they could hear a heart
murmur which is probably related to possibly being dehydrated.  They gave her
a B12 shot and I took her home.  I already said if worst came to worst I
wouldn't put her through any unnecessary treatments or subject her to any
painful procedures and that I would strive only to provide the best supportive
care for her while she was alive so
that she would have the best chances.  I'm just wondering if any of you have
gone through the same thing and if I can expect her to pull out of this on her
own, or, if she doesn't, how long she might have left.  I'm sincerely
heartbroken.  I really thought I had nursed her through the most risky part of
her illness (kittenhood) and that she would now go on to live a halfway long
life.  In any case, if anyone has any advice or information I would greatly
appreciate it.

Thanks all,

Jennifer

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask for prayers and warm thoughts for my FeLV+ girl, Ember as well
as my mother's (hopefully) negative cat, Callie. Somehow, Callie got into
Ember's room, not once, but twice. The first time only lasted for a few
minutes, but I discovered a terrible cat fight in progress when I got back
upstairs. To disrupt the chase, I grabbed Callie to remove her from the room. I
got a bloody finger with three puncture marks in the process.

Later, I realized I should really get abx for the bite, so my dad took me to
the doctor. We were gone about an hour. When I got back, I was saddened to find
that I had stupidly managed to not completely close one of the doors to our
rooms, and Callie had again gotten in. I don't know that the cats fought the
second time. I think Callie might have explored the normally off limits rooms.
I found Ember hiding but unshaken behind some clothes, and Callie didn't act
like she was on edge, but I have no idea what happened.

Needless to say, I'm very concerned about Callie's possible exposure to the
virus. We've had a few run-ns over the last seven years, but nothing like the
fight/chase I broke up today. My hope is that Callie being seven years old puts
her at low risk for infection. She hasn't had any recent vax for FeLV, but she
had the FeLV (including booster) when she was a kitten. She also seems very
healthy.

There was actually more tough cat stuff today involving a 17 yro diabetic who
had to go for a dental (this ended on a good note), and my usual concerns about
Ember. The radiologist hasn't contacted the surgeon after almost a week, and
Ember probably needs surgical intervention for her diaphragmatic hernia.

Please think of the two girls.

explained that she doesn't have any issues. He may have reported this, but I
haven't gotten a call. Yet.

He wants me to get a tetanus shot. He said that the shot would be ~$85 at the
office, but $5 if given by the Health Department. I sprung for the $5 script,
but I'm now wondering if they're going to question me. I'd be willing to pay
the money to not have to deal with them, if there's concern that they'll
interrogate me or take Callie away.

Dear friends,

We earlier did a snap ELISA test for my 16 yrs old indoor late stage CKD girl,
Meowko, which was positive. But We just got her confirmatory IFA test back on
Thursday, which is negative. In
order to confirm whether the first snap test was false positive, we did the
snap test again. The result was still positive (although we were told that it
is
slightly positive, I am not sure what this means...I guess it is like
pregnancy test's faint line? ) Before all these tests, Meowko was tested twice
negative when we adopted her and received vaccines.

I was wondering if anyone on this list has experience with contradictory
results on snap and IFA tests? or if you have any thoughts on what we can read
out of these tests? Can the contradictory results provide any clues for
Meowko's current virus infection situation and therefore treatment
possibilities?

Any thoughts and advice are appreciated. Thank you very much.

with my best,

Catherine  ( Meowko)

Hi
everyone:

I
just joined up, this is my first post. To be brief, I volunteer at
our
local
animal shelter, and just adopted a FeLeuk+ girl. I have worked
with
them at the shelter, but never had one in my home, so I joined up
to
get some tips and help, when I need it. She is about 2 years of age,
named
Raja, very pretty, and also very sweet, and a happy girl. The
shelter
had sent in an IFA test on her, to see where she stands, and we
are
waiting for the results of that. I have just switched to an
integrative
vet,
and plan to take Raja to her after we get the results.

I
also have 8 other cats and 1 rat, all of which came from the shelter
(fallout
from volunteering), and I am usually fostering for them as well,
usually
cats, but I’ve also had rabbits, ferrets, a hedgehog, a hamster,
and
rats. Now I have a mama and her 6 babies, which were born here.
Of
course Raja has her own room, with the rat in his cage to keep her
company.

Before
joining I had never heard of mixing them with non leuk cats-I find
this
interesting. Not sure I would have the guts to do it, though.

I
was wondering-are there files on the home site that I can look

Subject: [Felvtalk] Malignant Tumor In Ear

It's called high grade epithelial neoplasm carcinoma of the ear canal. The
tumor was debulked and laser removed twice. Each time it grew back quicker than
the time before. The cat was rescued by my friend Karen. The cat is still
chubby, eating very well, plays and purrs but the mass can be seen in her left
ear. She tested negative on the combo test. Does anyone know a group with whom
I could discuss this issue? I searched most of the Yahoo! groups but only found
one that deals with cancer. The cat so very much wants to continue living but
the tumor is malignant and has spread into the lymph node which is swollen to
the size of a walnut and growing.

Spay and Neuter your cats and dogs and your weird relatives and nasty neighbors

Laura. I'm afraid with a positive IFA test there isn't a chance Dani will shed
the virus.  Here is the link to a chart that explains the meaning of the test
results
http://www.felineleukemia.org/felvhlth.html

I have rescued several FeLV kittens.  They lived from 1-4 yrs.  I didn't find
supplements helpful but others may have had better luck.  Many FeLV kitties on
this list have lived for several years.

You are already on top of what will be best for Dani - good food, lots of love
and a stress free environment.  Try to stay on top of any health issues.  Since
her immune system is compromised she may be more susceptible to URIs, etc.

By the way I had all my FeLV babies spayed or neutered.  I felt it was more
stressful for them if left unfixed.

It broke my heart when I lost each of them but I would change what I did.  Each
was special and brought joy to my heart.  My other rescues were adults.  I had
them all vaccinated for FeLV and let my positives have the run of the house.
With 17 other cats that may be hard for you to do.

Bless you for caring and giving Dani a home

Subject: [Felvtalk] Introduction

Hieveryone,

I am new to this group--and new to FeLV. I just took in an FeLV+ kitty from the
shelter where I am a volunteer. Her name is Dani and she is beautiful. Long
story short, she and her three siblings were found outside in a box when they
were about a week old. They came to the shelter and tested positive for FeLV
(ELISA).  They were retested and again it was positive. At 9 weeks, they had an
IFA test, all positive. During this time, they were bottle fed until about 8
weeks, shuttled to and from the shelter by a staff member. They were also
treated for URIswith azithromycin. The shelter cultures all incoming cats for
ringworm and unfortunately theirs came back positive, so they were dipped in
lyme a couple of times a week for a while and put on Itraconazole. Dani took
longer to shake it off and so was completely alone for some time. During their
time at the shelter they were vaccinated with 2 rounds of FVRCP, a rabies
vaccine and spayed/neutered. Sadly, Dani's
littermates all came down with different issues(I don't know all the details,
but I know the vet suspected FIP) and were euthanized. Little Dani was left
alone, in a bathroom with no windows, and not many visitors. The second I found
out about her, I set up thesun room off my bedroom (it was unheated but fixed
that fast) and took her home.

Anyway, I wanted to give the whole background so you know just how much she has
been through in her short life. While even here it is not optimal--she is
isolated--it is so much better than being stuck in the stuffy bathroom. Here,
she bird watches, has a ton of toys, a much better diet and a ton of cuddles
(though not as much as I wish. I have 17 other cats.)

I have two big questions: is it possible for her to become negative with a
positive IFA result at 9 weeks? And, second: how do I best care for her? I have
her on a high quality canned only diet (wellness and weruva--no fish) and
minimize stress as much as possible. Are there supplements I should be giving?
Are NuCat vitamins recommended? Are my food choices OK for her?  I will never
vaccinate or even take her to a vet (I'd have one come to me if necessary to
minimize stress.) I feel terrible she is alone alot of the timeand I have
thought about bringing in another young FeLV + kitty for her, but I am worried
about causing stress, having it backfire. Ihave all the patience in the world
when it comes to having cats work out issues, but I'm also very careful when
bringing in a new cat, quarantining for a couple of weeks, letting her explore
while I put othersin other rooms, etc. But I wouldn't have that ability to do
so with a companion for Dani as I
literally don't have any rooms left.

Sorry for such a long post! I really want to do right by her. I love her to
pieces.

Thank you!

Laura and Dani girl

HiSharyl,

Thank you so much for the quick reply:)

I would have to guess she is about 4 years old.

I've had cats with worms before, but they were quite obvious in the stool... I
will try to check her stool more closely.

So some pumpkin for my Pumpkin how ironic... might need to try that and I
will let you know.  Maybe it will be best for her to stay in the basement, near
her pottyfor awhile?  I had one other response, and he said, she just may have
had an accident, which is what I might be thinking.  I think previously, we
were chasing the kids in the house, and she may have gotten scared and it just
sorta ran out...

What about hiding under the bed?? She did that when she first came here, and
has been good now for a few weeks, but today she was under the bed again?  I
read that sometimes can be a sign that they aren't feeling well?

Thanks again for your time and knowledge:

Tricia

Hi Tricia. You don't say how old Pumpkin is.  It is usual to re-test for FeLV
after 3 months.  Since she used to be outside has she been treated for worms?
That may be why her stools are soft.  Many add some canned plain pumpkin (not
the spiced pie filling) to the canned food to add fiber when a kitty has
diarrhea.   Usually start out with 1 tsp.

I've never used Tylosin Tartrate.  Here is a link to more info

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me

We live in the country and have about 8 outside cats.   A friend decided to
take one home, Pumpkin, and had her all fixed up at the vet with shots, spay
and declaw.  She found out she has  feline leukemia.  She kept her for about a
month, but I guess she was making a mess as far as using the litter box.  I
told her I didn't want her to go to an over crowded humane society, so I took
her back.  She is now in the house, as she is front declawed, and she is not to
be around the other cats with her cancer.

So... I've had her home since just before Christmas, and she's been fine other
than not eating a whole lot.  Her stool is quiet soft, and I did find a few
hard turds in two different sleeping places that she uses.  Well now today,
she had a ver messy stool on the wood floor in the hallway!! Really shocked me
as she's been so good using the littler box.

Is this a sign that she is getting sick, the not using the littler box?  She
has a prescription for Tylosin Tartrate, and she said to give this to
her(powder form), when/if she gets sick???

She does seems to sleep most of the day, but I know cats do do that:)  She also
does purr quite loud!!  Must be a good sign.  She will play with a string too.
So she's been very happy, but now I had to resort to putting her back in the
basement with her food and litter.  I might end  up sleeping down there with
her again, as I did when she first came in thehouse.  She has had the run of
the house now for weeks, but I just don't trust her since her accident.

I've read where infected cats can live quite long, but yet others do not.  I
certainly would not want to put her thru all sorts of treatments...

Thank you for your time:)))

I appreciate any input for my Pumpkin!

Thanks for your reply Beth. I'm an engineer and I'm trying to make sense out of
the tests...and what you said isn't all making sense to me yet :).

The kittens had been separated from their mother for most of their lives. The
mother was an outside-cat and died/disappeared right after the kittens were
born. My nephew hand-fed the litter and we adopted two of five original
kittens. They would have been un-exposed to other cats for more than six months
before we tested them originally. The original Elisa should have been positive
because we had them for 90 days before spaying them and they were in my
nephew's care for many more months before that. The vet also latches onto that
period as originating their exposure to the virus...because nothing else makes
sense. The cat community lives in my sister's barn in a rural section of
Wisconsin...she has put many cats up for adoption and has never had a case of
FeLV in any of the their cats to date.

The IFA detects viral protein either in the blood or blood cells. If Tux had
anemia from FeLV itself then the virus would have to be very active in the bone
marrow and blood, or, her immune system was compromised and she got a parasitic
infection...also involving FeLV in the bone marrow. In both cases, with
something as severe as anemia presenting, the IFA would be positive. It doesn't
make sense that the IFA could be negative under these circumstances. From what
I read you don't get anemia on initial exposure to the virus...the anemia is a
side effect of serious infection of the bone marrow and white blood cells.

Here is what I read about the snap test online (considering the source):
1) There is room for interpretation of the results by the technician (color
detection). Sometimes the color is very faint or an over-zealous tech can see a
faint color when there is none.
2) Some other antibodies in the blood can cross-react with the elisa...giving a
false positive.
3) First two issues aside, the test is 95% accurate. IFA is over 99% accurate.

Thanks again for your reply...I guess I'm having a hard time understanding why
the IFA was negative in such a severe case of anemia and how Tux could ever
have been exposed to the virus.

Thanks. Dave

Subject: [Felvtalk] anemia and negative IFA

Our female cat, Tux, is 5 years old and is recovering from acute anemia...we
are 2-cat household...both house cats, not allowed outside and no exposure to
other cats as far as we know. Both were tested at the age of spaying (~9 mos)
for FeLV (Elisa) and were negative and vaccinated against it...and boostered 2
years ago.

Tux's blood chem was normal except for severe anemia (10% RBC). She had lost 2
lbs off her normal weight (sudden)...had a positive snap test and negative IFA
for FeLV. Her blood also tested positive for immune reaction to her own blood.

We started treatment on prednisone and antibiotics and she has gained 1/4 pound
and boosted her new RBC count by 5x, now RBC is at 15% by blood volume...all in
one week's time.

The vet is certain she has FeLV...even though we're having a hard time
understanding how she could possibly have been exposed...and if exposed why the
vaccine didn't prevent infection (it seems like a real long shot that she would
have caught FeLV). I am also trying to understand how the IFA test could be
negative...the low RBC count seems to indicate that this is secondary
viremia...and infecting her bone marrow (which should lead to a positive IFA).
The vet keeps suggesting implausible ways she may have caught the virus in
order to maintain the diagnosis as FeLV.

Please let me know your experiences and please be honest if you think we're in
denial. From online research I've been able to determine that the snap test is
about 90-95% reliable (and prone to technician error if faintly positive) and
the IFA is 99.9% accurate...but may not register right away if she has an
initial infection.

Thanks for any advice you can share. Dave

Re: [Felvtalk] Fw: Advice

2012-10-19 Thread Sharyl
Dee, there are better anti-nausea meds for cats.  A good one is ondansetron
(generic for Zofran).   Your vet has to write an Rx for it.  Typcal dose is 1
mg 2-3 times/day.  Check around as prices vary a lot between pharmacies.
Original Strength Pepcid AC is used for cats with excess stomach acid.  Do NOT
use any other type of pepcid.  Typical dose is 2.5 mg EOD.  It doesn't sound
like your cat has excess stomach acid.

As I wrote earlier Cerenia has helped some cats with nausea but ondansetron
seems to work for more cats.

Dee, I'm sorry your cat is having problems.  Cerenia is typically Rx'd as an
anti-emetic (vomiting).  Some vets also Rx it for nausea even though there are
better drugs to use for nausea.  Each kitty is unique and Cerenia does seem to
help fight nausea in some cats.  Most in the FAF yahoo group give it for 4 days
then take a day off.  Not sure what you vet recommended.  The FAF list members
have found Cerenia to be a very effective and safe anti-emetic.

Here is a link to a good vet article on meds used to control vomiting.  The
info on Cerenia is about 1/2 way down under the heading 'A new antiemetic drug

My 7yr old has up till this point shown no signs of the virus.
Tuesday she was acting very odd and not eating. I took her to the vet, who ran
bloodwork.
Her lympocytes were incredibly high, wbc was high (can't remember the numbers),
she had a 104 temp. She got injections of b12, steroid, antibiotic and I was
sent home with antibiotic and pain meds if needed and an appetite stimulant.
Wed she wouldn't eat again so I was syringe feeding her. I have been giving her
the anitbio and app stimulant. Today she started to eat on her own, although I
will still syringe to make sure she's getting enough nutrients.  She also has
IBD but the vet said to give her whatever she'll eat at this point to at least
get her wanting to eat again. We sent the bloodwork out to a lab to assure the
in house results were correct, they were.
My vet wants to start her on cerenia, keep her on the anitbio and the app
stimulant. We're basically going to take it day by day at this point. Since she
is now shedding the virus she is staying in her bedroom (which has a screen
door on it) but is a little stressed that she can't come out and visit when we
are home. I've been going in and visiting as much as possible but it's hard
when I'm gone for most of the day. We have another kitty who we have to get
tested in 2 months to see if she was exposed.
If anyone has suggestions or opinions I would appreciate it. Also, has anyone
used cerenia and is there anything I should know about it?
Has anyone else gone through similiar experiences and can offer any advice?

Thanks in advance and sorry this is so long.

My Nitnoy crossed over today at 12:45.    She had been with me since 2008,
survived a raccoon biting of her tail and being FELV +.  There was nothing to
idicate whaat was going on.  During the holidays, she was not doing well so
took her to ER.  They did x-rays and complete bloodwork.  I had told them she
was FELV+ but they did not seem upset that she was just 1 point low on red and
white cells.  After the holiday, I took her to my vet as she was not improving,
had not passed urine or stool.  First thing he did was look at her anal
glands.  They were impacted and infected.  He cleaned them out and gave her
Covina and we brought home Orbax to be given once daily.  Everything was much
better, she was back to her self.  Then Friday, she began hiding, not eating or
drinking so took her to vet on Saturday.  ONE THING SHE DID THAT STRUCK ME ODD
- SHE TRIED TO EAT THE FIRBARK THAT MY ORCHIDS ARE PLANTED IN.  Sat when we got
to vet, my dr was not
there, but his wife (also a vet) was.  She said her lymph glands were slightly
enlarged and gums very pale.  We did another blood panel.  Her white cells were
.98 and her red blood cells were 3.2.  Kidney and liver functions were normal
as were creatine and bun.  We thought about going to ER for transfusion, but
she would have to stay over the weekend in a cage and we decided the stress
would outweigh any good it might do plus her body might just kill the new blood
and we would be right back where we started plus stress.  Again, gave Covina
shot and started again on Orbax.  I wanted to try a tonic that has worked
wonders on cancers, etc.  Vet said ok but keep a record of what I did in case
it worked.  She actually seemed to improve.  I was feeding with an eye dropper
aruond 50 ml every hour (i can ad mixed with 3 cans hot water so she could
swallow and also to egt fluids into her.  She got around 50ml of tonic also.
She took a turn for the
worse this am at 3:30, but then seemed to get better.  She was breathing
easier, heart was strong and she responded to my voice and touch.  By 12:45,
she had gone completely the opposite direction.  I was holding her aganst me as
she seemed to like the body warmth when she gasped 3 or 4 times and the light
in her eyes went out.  I knew she was going and I told her it was all right.
She held on with her claws, gave a sigh and that was all.

Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccinations

2012-10-07 Thread Sharyl
Again it really depends on the kitten.  I've rescued 10 FeLV kittens.  All had
their rabies shot and initial series of FVRCP shots.  All were asymptomatic at
the time.  None got sick from the vaccines.  I eventually lost all of them to
FeLV.  They lived from 1 yr to 4 yrs.  It is a decision each individual has to
make.  Mine got their rabies vax because it is required by law.  They got the
FVRCP series of 2 shots because I did not want to risk them getting distemper.

There is no one rule that applies to all cats except to love them and give them
the best food and care you can.  It broke my heart to lose my FeLV babies but
they brought me so much joy.  I only hope I was able to give them 1/2 of what
they gave me.

Hugs to yours

Janine, I'm not sure where you got the 28 days from exposure to testing
positive.   I don't think it is that cut and dried.  Most of what I have read
suggest retesting in 60-90 days.  Like someone else has posted I wouldn't worry

Edna, ondansetron (generic for Zofran) is a good med for nausea for cats.  Your
vet will have to give you a Rx for it.  Check around at your local pharmacies
as cost will vary a lot.  Usual dose is 1 mg every 8-12 hrs.    That and the
pain meds will help make her comfortable.  I also fed whatever they wanted from
meat baby food to baked salmon.

Ondansetron can also be ordered on line with a Rx from

2012-10-04 Thread Sharyl
Janine, 1st thank you for helping all these cats and kittens in such a
responsible manner.  Here is the link to a chart I have found very helpful in
explaining testing for FeLV
http://www.felineleukemia.org/felvhlth.html

As I understand it the IFA test requires the virus to be in the kittens bone
marrow which takes time.

Sometimes positive test are incorrect perhaps due to the handling of the test.
Timing is very important.  If left too long before reading they will give a
positive result for a negative cat.

Hope Bella tests negative next time

Hello,

I joined this list years ago, and have now needed to rejoin.  Trying to find
testing protocol for FeLV and an explanation for it.

I am with a rescue grp and we have just started trapping in a colony that had
30
kittens last year and none of them tested pos.  We just took 9 kittens within a
few days, and are close to having all of the adults neutered.  There were a few
newcomers - mostly toms.

All kittens tested neg until Bella, who tested a weak pos with Elysa sent out
to
lab.  Moms were all mixed up in this colony, everyone taking care of each
other's kittens.

A 2nd vet did IFA test a few days after Bella's pos results, which I understand
is too soon, but having a hard time trying to explain this!

My concern is that even if all the kittens tested neg except Bella, that
doesn't
mean in a few weeks the same kittens would not retest pos.  My thinking is that
more than one may have been exposed recently enough that the test might not be
positive last wk, but may be tomorrow?

Another vet thinks I am over thinking/reacting and we should just adopt out the
ones that have tested neg right around the same time Bella tested positive.

Looking for guidance -

Thank you,
Janine

 Friends,

We can only do our best everyday to help the victims without voices, either
humans or animals.  Kevorkian was arrested because it is against the law to
end lives.  Thanks goodness we can do what we can do, to end the suffering
of a companion that is truly suffering (pet).   I am a Christian and believe
in heaven and hell and Karma.  So, until we all die,  that person who puts
their pet down to travel the world or whatever, is a selfish person to begin
with and I am sure it is not the first time that they were disrespectful to
life.  They will have to be judged  and only the Lord will have that talk
with them at the end of their  life.  I live in Florida and just heard about
a cat in Riverview that was found (alive) with an arrow in its back!   They
are trying to find the person who did it.  Trust me, I am sure if it was a
little child or adult,  the FBI would be involved.  But because it was a
cat,  they are doing their best. At the end of every day,  everything we
do a group has a major impact on saving our furry friends.  We can also
voice our opinion to the government to change laws.   God  Bless America.
Let's be positive here,  we are in America and have the opportunity to
change anything in our power as a group.  Look in the Middle East,  killing
everyday!   Thank you to all you Vet techs that try to intervene and help
out where you can. however,  you are right.. it is up to the VET to stand up
for the healthy animals that they put to sleep

This is a cat that failed in his last attempt to make it to Best Friends
because of how poorly he handled transport.  He was 1 of 3 cats supposed to be
headed out there and they decided they needed to work with a vet to find a
better solution for getting him through long travel.  The biggest issue is now
with all the new travel security requirements he can't just stay in his carrier
he must be removed and his carrier xrayed while he comes through the xray with
me.

They have done tests runs with the sedation and feel it is the best option for
us making it through security safely without putting him, myself or security at
risk when removing him from the carrier.  Other products have not worked with
him.  He takes a very long time to adjust and warm up (but once he does is said
to be a total sweety).  Other problem being I do not know nor have I ever met
this cat.  He will be arriving at my house in a few hours but I am no home and
will only have time to meet him for about 10 minutes prior to being out the
door again this evening.

None of it is the ideal situation however I am his only option to save his life
and I do not feel comfortable removing a cat from the carrier unsedated that
those who actually know the cat have expressed great concern about the problems
I will have with him. I don't think its as simple as minor anxiety or stress
for this guy.

Re: [Felvtalk] Foster Mom with FELV kittens follow up

2012-06-27 Thread Sharyl
My experience with 10 FeLV kittens is they will do fine for 1-4 yrs before
showing signs of illness.  My rescue kittens were positive initally and stayed
that way.  All did fine with s/n - no issues at all.  All were active and
loving babies.  Thank you for saving these babies

You've got it right.  I've immersed myself in FELV for the past 2 weeks and
feel I've got a pretty good grasp and from what I understand what you  stated
is correct.  Basically I need the snap and IFA test to match..but a positive
snap and negative IFA does NOT mean they are in the clear it may just mean it
has not spread to the point of testing positive on IFA yet.  I need either a
matching negative snap and IFA or matching positive snap and IFA.  I've really
had to educate myself on this bc I've learned the shelter really does not have
great knowledge on it and they really tend to group FELV and FIV together a
lot.  Prior to me doing my own investigating and phone calls I was told a ton
of different things from the shelter.

As for the mother- these guys were left on someones doorstep with no mom and
brought to the shelter.  I pulled them as bottlefeeders at about 2 weeks old
(uninformed on needing to request a snap test).  I had them for 5 weeks not
knowing about the FELV...dropped them off for their spays and neuters at 2lbs
and got a call that afternoon that 1 in the litter had tested postiive for FELV
(they only test 1).  They had only tested them bc I checked off a box
requesting the snap test (otherwise never would have tested them).  When I
picked them up I brought them to the clinic and had a 2nd one in the litter
tested who also tested positive.  A week later I had an appointment with the
shelters vet who than snap tested the 3rd kitten in the litter who also tested
positive.  Now we wait...re-snap..if snap positive we will send out IFA.  At
this point Im treating them as FELV+ and certainly don't have my hopes up that
they are going to be negative.

They are not showing any signs or symptoms that I am aware of at this point.
They were spayed and neutered that day which now Im hearing mixed things on
whether that should have been done or not and that FELV cats can have a
difficult recovery.  These guys had no problems recovering and have bounced
back wonderfully besides 1 of them getting really bad diarrhea for a few days
but we discovered roundworms and treated all 3 for that.  His diarhea is now
gone and he's back to himself.

the link from the files at the FCRF yahoo group they have to give fluids all
the time so some good advice and links on there.  you can google it and check
prices, you may need a script for the fluids as they want to make sure you are
getting the right type of fluid.  I always use lactated ringers.

Dear all,
I lost my sweet Sylvia cat this afternoon. Despite our best efforts with daily
subcutaneous fluids, appetite stimulants, Interferon, probiotics, vitamins,
steroids, and multiple antibiotics, she was still fading fast and appeared to
be in a significant amount of pain yesterday. So, with a heavy heart, I took
her to the vet one last time this afternoon for a consult. The vet looked over
her chart thoroughly, took a close look at her gums and listened to her breath,
and said that at this point we'd done all we could do; the anemia was causing
her to crash. We agreed, sadly, that it was time to let her go. This was
definitely the hardest choice I've ever made; I'm only 25 and Sylvia was my
first cat as an adult. We bonded immediately and it has been awful watching her
decline over the last month. I'd never been present when an animal has been
euthanized before, and I was extremely reluctant to see her go this way. I'd
hoped she might pass quietly at home,
but she just seemed so uncomfortable that letting her linger struck me as
cruel and selfish. I think I made the right choice. She went peacefully,
wrapped in a clean blanket in my arms, with no pain. While we waited for the
vet, she sat in my lap and purred just like she did as a kitten at her first
vet visit. It broke my heart to let her go, even though I know it was the
kindest thing I could do.

Sylvia was the best cat I've ever had: smart, sweet, devoted, impeccably
well-mannered, pleasantly chatty, cuddly. Up until last month, she was fat,
sassy, and apart from gingivitis, quite healthy, so I am confident she had a
good life. I will miss her terribly. I already do. I'm glad I have my lively
little clownish siamese mix, Beatrice (who, as far as I know, is FeLV negative
and healthy as a horse) to keep me company. It'll just be the two of us for a
little while, so we have time to mourn the loss of a truly great friend, old
soul, and gentle spirit.

I am so, so sad...but also thankful for four years with a wonderful cat. Some
animals make you a better person. I think Sylvia has done that for me, and I
will always remember her.

Thanks to all of you who have given me advice and support over the last few
years. I'm grateful to have had a group of more experienced cat owners to turn
to with questions and concerns; you all have been a great source of comfort and
information. Best of luck to you and yours in fighting this awful disease.
Sadly,
Anna (and Beatrice)

His tumor had gotten large enough to be causing him pain and he had stopped

boy.  The first time I met him in the rescues FeLV room he reached up and
gave me a hug.  From then on he was my boy and I can't believe he is gone
and I will never see him again in this world.  He was about 10 when I
adopted him and that was four years ago.  He would come up and bite me in
the butt for attention when I was working on the computer.  If I got up at
night to go to the bathroom he would accompany me.  Always.  I guess
that was how I knew it was time.  On the last night he didn't do
that.  He will be SO missed.  I hate hate hate this disease.

It may not be just jaundice, it could be hepatic lipidosis, which is very
serious! Blood test is a must, and force feeding, fluids (sub-q), and
antibiotics are required!
I had a cat last summer that went down to 4.5 lbs, to the point where they
wanted to insert a feeding tube through nose or surgically into stomach to
which I said no, because I knew that I could force fed her small amounts all
day long, and she would have been absolutely miserable with any of the two.  I
mixed A-D with some hot water and meds, and used a syringe.  Within 2 weeks,
her values were tremendously improved and she made a complete recovery.
Hepatic lipidosis happens mostly to female cats. She was only about 1 ½ - 2 yrs
old.  She is a very fussy eater, and I have finally found the one and only food
that she will eat. BTW,  her prognosis was grim, and the vets were really
surprised how I got her well in such a short time! The poor girl was through a
lot, had a litter in the streets (only 2 survived), and we got her when she was
already pregnant with second litter – too late to abort.

Food is the cure for FHL.  She needs to get some good syringes and start assist
feeding both kitties ASAP.  Have her blend a jar of meat baby food (no onions

to dilute with water.  Has more caloreis than A/D.  What counts now is calories.

She took him to the vet.  I think it was Friday.  He just said it was because
of the FeLV.  I don't think he recommended anything but maybe because it's a
cat in our foster system and he didn't think we would want to spend a lot of
money on it.  I don't know for sure.  The vet did some bloodwork and said his
liver levels were elevated.  I think the kitty ate over the weekend but the
last couple days he stopped.  She's been assist feeding him a little.  She
was at the store in the middle of the night the other night buying him baby
food, sardines, tuna and anything else she thought would tempt him.  She
finally gave up and made him eat some baby food.  Oh, he drank a little kitten
milk but didn't want it today.  I told her to mix a/d with water or chicken
broth because that's easy to get down them.

The other weird thing is that now his sister won't eat.  She's not yellow or
anything but last night and today she wouldn't eat but just laid in her
litterbox.  My friend will be taking her to the vet tomorrow.  I'll tell her
not to give up on them yet.  I'll tell her to make sure the vet gives both of
them sub-q fluids.  What kind of antibiotics would you suggest?

Re: [Felvtalk] caboodle ranch - other side of the story links

2012-03-08 Thread Sharyl
I know others have also responded Natalie about TNR.  TNR is one of the best
ways of fighting the spread of FeLV.  In my experience a positive momma will
have positive kittens.  Fix the momma and you stop the spread of the disease in
a feral colony.  I also do TNR and manage 2 feral colonies.  The adult males
and females are released back after recovery from their surgeries.  Males 1 day
and females 3-4 days as long as they are doing OK.   The kittens I tame and try
to adopt out.  The only way to combat PETA is to responsibly manage these
feral/hard stray colonies.  My oldest feral is a 7+ year old male who is only
happy outside in his colony.  We can't take all these feral/hard strays in but
we can give them a healthy, stress free life in their colonies once they have
been spayed/neutered.  At least that way the population is controlled.

The real problem is feeders who do not TNR.  That's how these feral/hard stray
colonies get out of control.  Managing these colonies means responsible s/n,
feeding and medical treatment when needed.

I know many people who do TNR and have dedicated volunteers taking care of
them, even trapping for vet visits. Personally, I don’t like some of the ways
that TNR cats are provided or NOT provided for.  Some groups spay cats and
release them almost immediately, even in freezing weather (when it is a known
fact that healing is seriously hindered) , and such consequences as infections,
and even disembowelment due to ruptures.
Yes, one should expect cats at such a ranch to be provided with medical care!
I can’t even imagine how many people are required to seriously care for 700
cats!

Any healthy cats (tame or feral) who are trapped and brought over to the

We are already very agressive about TNR effort working with the city, but this

I personally don't believe in testing cats for Felk/FIV - the idea is
population control by spay/neuter - we simplay put them back where they come

Hello everyone,

Some of you have known me for a while -- others not.

Just writing to let you all know my healthy, non-FeLV cat Siggie has left
me for the Rainbow Bridge. He was the last of my original group who did
NOT have FeLV. He was my FeLV+ Salome's companion up until she passed in
2005 (right after I adopted Travis from Res-Q-Pets).

He was fine all day yesterday. Then suddenly, he couldn't walk or
breathe. He was wheezing terribly, and was dragging his hind quarters
behind him, soiling himself. I rushed him to the local vet, who told me
that he had fluid all in and around his lungs, was at end stage cardiac failure
and had threw a clot, which is what paralyzed him.

The kindest thing I could do for him was to let them put him down -- but he
ended up not needing the help. They gave him a sedative, and before they
injected the final shot of the pink stuff, he was gone.

Rest in peace and sleep well, my big orange boy. Meowmy and Daddy
will miss you forever.

There is no reliable test for FIP.  Your cat tested positive for corona
virus.  Most cats will test positive for corona virus and never get ill.  FIP
is caused by a form of corona virus to which some cats are genetically
predisposed to contract if exposed to it.  FIP is not rare but it's definitely
not very prevalent.  I have had cats who tested above 400 for corona virus and
never got FIP and a cat who definitely had FIP but tested very low for corona
virus.  He had apparently been exposed to the form that he was predisposed to
contract.  He was also a street cat, in poor health in general.  Lee

  Hi Everyone

I am new to this list and to the world of Feline Leukemia. We have 3
precious cats, and we found out at the end of last year that two are FeLV
positive, and of those two, one is FIP positive as well :(

  Details:
Kitty1 (11 years old, male) is the reason we got any of them tested at all.
He was just a little off - more subdued, less energy, a little on the skinny
side. He tested positive for FeLV and FIP. Our vet put him on a round of
cortisone and antibiotics, and he seemed to bounce back. He still isn't
completely 100% though (although hard to pinpint actual behaviours, more just
a general sense I have), and is still skinnier than I would like.

Kitty2 (11 years old, male) also tested positive for FeLV (but not FIP). He
currently has no noticeable symptoms at all, although he does vomit a lot.
This has been going on for 5-6 years though, and he is long-haired, so I don't
think it is related.

Kitty3 (1 year old, male) tested negative for both viruses (and FIV). We had
him vaccinated against FeLV when he tested negative, and he had the booster 4
weeks later. We will continue to give him the vaccination every year.

If you got through all of this, thanks so much. Now my questions:

Q1. I want to start Kitty1 on some form of treatment, just to build him
up/keep him strong. I have the sense that all is not 100%, even although he is
not noticeably unwell, is eating fine etc. I was thinking of asking our vet to
start Interferon. Any thoughts here? Suggestions? Would something else be
better? Would it be bad to start a treatment like this before he is noticeably
sick? What is the recommended dosage here?
Q2. Is there anything I should be doing for Kitty2. He seems fine, hasn't
lost weight etc. He does throw up a lot, but has for the last 5-6 years.
Q3. We have decided to keep Kitty3 instead of rehoming him, after a lot of
thought. He has had 3 homes in the last year (a shelter rescue who was then
neglected by the person who adopted him... g...), and he is so settled
with us, that I worry about trying to find him yet another home. I think he
must have been exposed by now in any case (the older boys would groom him on
the face when he was little), so my prayer is that he has immunity. Am I being
naive here? Should we find him another home?
Q4. Any tips, advice, suggestions on what I can do to prolong our boys'
lives with a reasonable quality?

Thanks so much in advance. And sorry for the long message.

  Vicky

for their FeLV+ cat?

Hi, I am new to this list.

I've just found out that a stray cat I've been looking after is FeLV+.  She is
an adorable, petite young female (1-2 years old) that I've named Munchkin who
is spayed, and otherwise healthy.  The most special thing about her is that she
LOVES other cats. She chases after them and tries to play with them, and jumps
up onto window ledges wherever she sees a cat sitting in a window.  When I let
her into my home, she ran straight to my sleeping cat and snuggled in next to
him.  I don't think she would be immediately friendly to other people since it
took her awhile to trust me, but she now purrs and sleeps in my lap.

She would make a wonderful companion for another FeLV+ cat.  I cannot keep her
because my cat is FeLV-negative and unvaccinated.

I am lucky to have found a cat rescue to take her in on Monday, but she will be
confined separate from other cats, and this makes me sad for her.  Is there
anyone who wants her?  I'm in the Bay Area, California, and could drive her to
you.  Either before or after Monday (I'm sure I could get her back from her new
lodgings, but would rather not put her through more than one move).

Thank you everyone for your replies. I had this set on digest so I
didn't see them.  I am just learning about FeLV, and I have heard
everything from a cat can catch it from walking across a surface a
positive cat touched days ago, to it being very difficult to transmit
even with direct contact.

My first concern is to protect my existing cat. 2 different vets
advised me against vaccinating him for FeLV because of sarcoma risk
(he is an indoor cat). I'm considering it anyway but haven't made a
decision. One vet told me that the PureVax non-adjuvanted vaccine was
no better in preventing sarcoma.

I'm considering getting my cat vaccinated anyway but haven't made a
decision.  Keeping them separated inside my small home is not
possible. Ideally I'd like to find somewhere for this stray kitty with
an enclosed outdoor area because she's apparently used to being an
indoor/outdoor cat.  I think she'd do ok indoors as long as she had
other cats for company.___

Hello all,

OK, it is official.  My family will be arriving in Charleston, SC in June.  I
can't wait to be back in the good, ole USA!  However, I will miss my Japanese
vet so much.  I am hoping someone on here knows of a good vet there.  I've been
given some links to look for a vet, but personal recommendations are always
welcome:)

Also, I saw that there is a no kill cat shelter close by and I am anxious to
check it out.  For all of you in rescue, you have motivated me to be a part of
the solution.  I hope the shelter there is a positive place and I can be a
part.  I have tried to make a difference here in a very small community with
few strays/abandoned kitties, but am unable to have a permanent impact.

Somehow, I have been lucky enough to be blessed with two FeLV kitties with
lymphoma.  Both were found as stray kittens here in Japan and both seem to be
fighting the disease quite well.  Fuji  (2.5years) will be ending her
treatments here and hopefully stay in remission.  VooDoo (1.5years)  has only
had three treatments and will need to continue once we get home.  I am a member
of a yahoo group that deals with lymphoma and the success/health of these
babies seems to be quite unusual.  Makes me wonder if they really have lymphoma!

For those new members, I know that my kitties are somewhat anomalies.  However,
I hope that it gives you comfort knowing that there is always hope!

Thanks for all the support during our time here in Japan.

I don't know if you would call it a false negative.  It is possible for a cat

Feline leukemia virus is a retrovirus of cats
that can cause cancer, anemia and immunosuppression. Currently, no effective
treatment for FeLV infection exists. These researchers investigated the
usefulness of an anti-retroviral drug called raltegrevir that was developed for
treatment of HIV in humans. The researchers tested the drug in a laboratory
setting for potential toxicity to feline cells, as well as the ability to
inhibit the replication of FeLV in these cells. It was found that, at least in
cell culture, this drug inhibited virus replication and did not cause toxic
changes to the feline cells. The researchers speculate that this drug could be
used to reduce virus replication in FeLV-infected cats to the point that their
own immune system could eliminate the virus, effectively curing the infection.
Many more studies are needed, but this research offers a promising first step.

As has already been posted, the FeLV vaccine does not affect future test
results.   If a cat received the FIV vaccine it will test positive for FIV on
all future FIV tests.

Getting the FeLV vaccine won't hurt your cat other than the slight risk
associated with cancer at the vaccine site.

No idea why your vet went ahead with the vaccination before getting the test
results.  The in house test only takes 10 minutes.

Re: [Felvtalk] Vaccination question

2011-11-17 Thread Sharyl
It really depends on your cat's life style.  It is an indoor/outdoor kitty.  If
so then definitely get the FeLV vaccine.  Despite Lee's experience I would not
hesitate to use the FeLV vaccine if the kitty is indoor/outdoor, if you foster
kitties for a rescue, if you plan on bringing a FeLV kitty into your home.

Over the years I have rescued 10 FeLV kittens.  All became indoor only kitties
and were mixed with my negative cats.  All my negative cats were adults and I
kept them current on their FeLV vaccine.

Like others I do not believe in unnecessary vaccines.

I would be very, very cautious about vaccinating a cat agaimst FeLv.  Several
people I know had the miserable experience of their cat contracting leukemia
after being vaccinated. I wouldn't swear that the vaccine was the source of the
infection but these cats were not ever outside the house.  They were not
exposed to any other cats.  They may have had the disorder lurking in their
bone marrow and the vaccine sensitized them to getting the illness or they may
have gotten it from the vaccine.  In addition, there's the danger of
vaccine-site sarcoma. I have had cats living with me for most of my life. Most
of them survive well into what is considered old age for cats - 16 to 20
years.  Simply testing cats before adding them to my community assures that
they will not be exposed to FeLv. I don't vaccinate, except when I send cats to
adoption. FVRCP is required for that.  Of course, the rabies vaccine is
required by law in most States but other than
that, I feel that veterinarians push vaccines for cats for all the wrong
reasons.

Hi Crystal,You've already given him the ELISA done in the lab (not the SNAP,
which is done at the vet's)?  It's hard to tell from what you wrote.  A
negative lab ELISA would prove Felv negative.   Note that a negative IFA would
not prove anything, as it's skewed towards false negatives.  Alternately, a
positive IFA would prove positivity.Anyone on the Felv list have any ideas

The original email I circulated seems to have been edited and all of his
information is not included. This is his story:
Anakin was adopted from the East Valley Animal shelter, whom fixed and
microchipped him. He was then immediately brought to my vet who SNAP tested
him and dewormed him. She determined he was barely 10 weeks old, where at the
shelter they said 14 weeks.   The next day his ELISA test was positive and he
had a URI, which was causing him to sneeze.
I have 2 other cats so I kept them isolated and this further stressed Anakin,
to the point where we had to relocate him to a foster without other cats. We
IFA tested him 1 week later and he was FELV positive. Since we are unsure of
his age, we agreed to have him retested at minimum 6 weeks later. I arranged
a foster for him, who no tells me she will no longer house him after
Thursday.
We have many people who 'want' him if his next SNAP and IFA test come back
negative. If they are positive, we have no home for him lined up yet and this
is the predicament. If he can be the only cat in a home, he should be fine,
even if he is FELV positive. He is pretty healthy other than a virus/cold
that causes him to sneeze. Vet thinks he should grow out of it (2 rounds of
clavamox did not help, so its not bacterial), as he is growing tremendously
already and has TONS of energy, per the foster. His coat looks great and his
temperament is exquisite. He even gets along with small dogs.
So if you can help find him a forever home, regardless of his FELV status,
that would be ideal. Otherwise, if you can or you can help find hi a foster
in the meantime, this is equally beneficial.
Thank you for caring and feel free to contact me with any questions.

Fortunately, Dr. McCann was still at the office and she helped him cross over.

Just an update on that little “feral” cat I took from my dear aunt’s house….
After going to Forgotten Felines for spay (already spayed), partial tail
amputation and general health check, “Hemy” lived in a pen on my deck for
nearly a month. I would get my upper body in the pen and we would have a ‘love
fest’ of petting, purring, head-butting and cuddling.  Clearly: not a feral
cat.  So I left the pen door open yesterday.  She sniffed all around the yard,
circled several times, returned to the pen to eat and sleep in her favorite
bed.  I called FF about finding her a home, but I think this is her home, and
I’m her person.  I love this little cat.  I suspect she has some health issues,
but I’m delighted to give her a home and in return have her friendship.
By the way, my dear aunt passed away on Aug. 24.  I visited her the evening
before and she said then the same thing she said every time I saw her:  “I’m so
GLAD you have the cats.”  Then she’d ask about them and I’d tell her how each
one was doing and how wonderful they are.  It was obviously important to her
that her animals were being cared for, and I think the fact that it was me (‘in
the family’ and a known cat lover) helped.   I’m happy that my taking her cats
made her happy and gave her a little peace in her time of transition.

it up. My a ppt was at the end of the day so she said she wasn't to sure she
could even talk to them and may not be able to until Tuesday because of the
holiday. I think that they think he is too far gone. But how could it be that
Thursday morning he comes up the stairs, rubs all over my legs, purrs and now
he can't walk without stumbling all over? That makes no sense to me. Could it
be that he is low on potassium? But how, when he had fluids? Maybe he has a
brain tumor or something. He just peed on my couch twice. Just laid there and
did it. Not like him. She also said he is not anemic. His nose is very pink and
his gums are pink. Well that's all I know. Oh, I did just give him 500 mcg of
methyl B12. It won't hurt!  She also
told me to give him 81 mg of baby aspirin 2X a week.

Over the course of years he had a few personal kitties. One is still with me.
He is a 14 year old Balinese named Vinnie.
When my husband became ill I took Vinnie to the skilled nursing facility to
visit my late husband before he died. Vinnie also knew when he died too. Which
spooked me sort of. Vinnie was sleeping then all the sudden woke up, started
meowing, paced the floor a bit then went back to sleep. Within minutes the
facility called me and told me my husband had passed away at 4:30 am
(03/31/2011).
So I know animals have some sort of connection with us humans when they are
close like these two. When I got to the facility and told my daughter this she
said she isn't surprised by this. Vinnie and my late husband were very close
like 2 peas in a pod. My husband always called him his buddy and partner.
He had also said over the course of the years he wanted to come back as one of
my cats because they were spoiled and taken care of if it is possible. Whether
they were rescues or personal kitties. I do know he said he couldn't wait to
see the original Taz that had passed back in 2002.
Very few men would tolerate or care for the animals I had in rescue over the
years. He would care for cats and kittens like feeding, doing litter boxes,
medicate if needed, would clean up hair balls. The one thing that would cracked
me up is if a cat/kitten puked he would let me know and ask me to look at it or
inspect to make sure it was okay. This was to make sure it was normal looking.
The one thing he couldn't deal with was blood from animals. Humans he didn't
care except for his loved ones.
He had a great love for animals especially for those that couldn't fend for
themselves.
My husband was a one of a kind man and missed greatly by us.

Thanks for reading felt I needed to let others know from my end.

Subject: Re: [Felvtalk] Dexter

I'd like to start off this message by thanking all of you for your kind
words regarding Dexter over the past few days - - my wife and I have shared
and appreciated every one of the emails - it's meant a lot to us.
Unfortunately, this morning has proven to be heartbreaking to us both - we
received a call first thing this morning from East Dallas Animal Clinic's
Dr. Ken Cantrell that Dexter's condition had worsened over the course of the
night.  After picking Dex up from the Emergency clinic yesterday morning, we
immediately took him to Dr. Wright at Lakewood Vet Center.  Dr. Wright has
been on vacation since last week and we were told that he would be back
yesterday morning - but he hadn't yet returned.  I took Dexter to see him on
three occasions last week for his lymphocyte T-Cell Immunomodulator
injections, but was only able to see him that Monday.  When we took Dex in
on Friday when the swelling of his feet and face had begun, we were given no
advice by his staff who were unable to do anything other than give Dex his
shot and usher us out the door.  They are all very caring people and I don't
blame them for anything, but I feel that any vet who runs a practice where
he is the only doctor on staff, should do a bit more to keep his patients
informed about his availability - that way precious minutes or hours or days
aren't wasted waiting for him to return.  Fortunately, several weeks ago,
when trying to convince Dr. Wright to order the LTCI treatment (which took
him over a week to do) I was referred to the East Dallas Animal Clinic by
the LTCI folks - they had used the medication before.   East Dallas Animal
Clinic is a wonderful place.  We've worked with Dr. Ellsworth and Dr.
Cantrell there - - they are both compassionate and make a point of taking
calls from concerned pet owners.  They have both been wonderful to work with
and have been open to taking every conceivable avenue with Dex's treatment.
I only wish we had been seeing them from the start. We rushed Dex to them
yesterday morning as soon as it became clear that Dr. Wright wouldn't be
returning.  Again, I don't blame Dr. Wright, but when we took Dexter in for
his checkup three weeks ago and Dr. Wright informed us that anemia had set
in, his advice was to take him home and make him comfortable.  A week
passed as I researched and tried to communicate with him about alternate
treatments and off-label meds.  When you factor in that week and the week he
took to order the LTCI meds, that's two out of the last three weeks where
Dex had little treatment.  Again, why the difficulty in getting anything
done for Dex?  East Dallas, however, fit Dex in on the first day we spoke
with him and started him on Acemannan injections.  They had two remaining
doses remaining of that drug; a drug that was very beneficial to Dex last
year when he was first diagnosed.  they sacrificed those 2 doses for Dex
without question - had I gone to them earlier, perhaps it would have had
more effect on him. Regardless, Dex seemed to make improvements while on
Immunoregulin, LCTI and the acemannan.  FeLV and FIV are horrible diseases,
though, and I felt like there was something always sneaking up on Dex while
we treated him.  We seemed to reverse the anemia, but his Lymph nodes were
swelling.  Some days they would go down, other days, they would blow up.
When the mystery feet and face swelling started last week, he even responded
well with benadryl.  That thing sneaking up on Dexter?  Full blown cancer -
it wasn't just in his lymph nodes, it was in his liver and spleen - it had
probably made his heart swell.  His breathing was becoming more and more
labored and we struggled with the decision of when Dexter was in too much
pain to continue.  Yesterday, Dr. Cantrell started chemotherapy on Dex, as
well as steroids.  He seemed to tolerate the meds well, but over the course
of the night, he became more jaundiced and vomited, while his body
temperature dropped to 94 degrees.  His little body had given out as this
terrible disease had taken almost everything from him.  I say almost
everything, because when we arrived at East Dallas Animal Clinic this
morning, even though he was being hand fed oxygen while under a warming pad,
little Dexter still had a playful wag of the tail when we placed our hands
on him and told him how much we love him.  Dexter died at 8 this morning.
We are heartbroken that our sweet boy is gone and that he was only with us
for a year and a half.  He was such a wonderful, sweet and special kitty -
we will miss him terribly.  He

Sherry, sorry Plato has crossed the Rainbow Bridge.  So glad he was loved and
cared for.  So many aren't.

Laura, I understand how you feel. Over 4 years I lost 10 FeLV rescues.  Mattie,
my little blind girl, hit me the hardest.  She was the bravest and sweetest
little girl.   After the last positive died I found a kitten at the dumpster
colony I TNR and feed.  Angel was negative and got me into kitten rescue.  In
the end I kept Angel and have fostered several more kittens.  I know as long as
I am fostering kittens I can not take in any FeLV cats.   Fostering the kittens
has helped accept the loss of the positives.  Maybe I'll be able to take in
positives again but for now the kittens need me.  We all help out however we
can.

OK, so who says miracles and divine intervention do not exist?  After a couple
of hours in the very hot sun, I found evidence that maybe VooDoo was alive and
close by.  Then, I discovered that the police now have a NO trapping policy.  I
went to my Japanese vet to see if he could find a trap.  He was going to call
the city on Monday.  So, back to being a little stressed, feeling as though my
best hope was gone.

A couple of hours later, a very short, but really hard rain came and I was once
again concerned because I thought he was hiding in a drain pipe.  As soon as
the rain ended, I went to the back door and called out asking him to come
home.  What do you know, he answered me with his crazy, whiny cry.  After a few
minutes of trying to coax him into the house, I decided that he was either
trapped or hurt.  I called to him and he continued to call back.  Once I
located him hiding under a tree, I belly crawled on the wet ground to where he
was.  I reached under, in the dark, expecting the worst.  However, he let me
grab him and pull him out.

So, 48 hours after going missing, my baby is home safe and sound.  We will be
watching closely for sniffles and signs of fever!

Thank you all for your advice and positive vibes.  I truly believe that they
worked.

Hello all,

It is with a very heavy heart that I am asking for some positive energy from
this group!  My son's friend left a door open last night and my little VooDoo
escaped.  He is terrified of being outdoors and all attempts to capture him
only scared him more!  We live on a military base and there are no wild animals
to worry about and the speed limit on base is extremely slow.  My greatest
concern is that around 2:00am, he tried to come home and we absolutely scared
him to death trying to get him to bring him inside.  (He hasn't been out since
he came to us as a five week old kitten)  I'm worried that he might be afraid
to come home.

It breaks my heart to think of my little kissing bandit, hungry, scared and
alone.  He doesn't tolerate dry food well and I know some of the residents
where I suspect he is hiding puts it out for the few strays.  This is such a
heavy burden for me and I am not taking it very well.  Please just send your
positive thoughts our way.

Thanks for listening.

Cathy, you have already gotten some good advise.  I've rescued several FeLV
kittens and treasured the time I had with them.  They enjoyed 1 to 4+ years of
being pampered and loved.  I mixed my positives and negatives but my negatives
were all adult cats and current on their FeLV vaccine.

You can do so much to make whatever time Cali has a joy to both of you.  I
would get Sasha tested and vaccinated if she hasn't been already.

I am disturbed that Petco is adopting out kittens that have not been tested for
FeLV or FIV.  I also do TNR and rescue kittens.  I test all the rescued kittens
before offering them for adoption.

I am new the site and I am just crushed.  I have never had cats before and I
adopted a shelter kitten from Petco in Plano, Texas.  She had Ringworm to start
with and she was tiny, but she was playful and is as sweet as can be.  We live
in Downtown Dallas so she sits in the window of our high-rise and overlooks the
skyline.  Last week, she became very lethargic and on Friday, I became worried
so I took her to the emergency room.  She's always been little, but playful and
happy until last week.

They did a Feline Leukemia test and it was positive.  The only thing I had ever
heard about Feline Leukemia before Friday night was that all cats who get it -
die.

Cali is only 7 months old and I can't stop crying.  I just moved to Dallas last
July.  I have always had Dachshunds but I didn't think that dogs should be in
apartments, so I got Cali.  Then I didn't want Cali to be by herself, so I got
another shelter kitty from the Petco in Bedford, (named Sasha) and she is very
healthy.

The emergency room vet and the Vet that I took Cali to have both told me that I
need to put Cali to sleep so that Sasha won't get sick and Cali won't get
better so she should be put down.  For all of you out there, please say a
prayer for me and Cali.  She is a Blue Cream Tabby, she weighs 5 pounds and she
has been a real fighter.  I don't know how I will find the strength to put her
to sleep.

She is so little.  I want her to get better.  I can't stop crying.

Hi all,

I know I haven't posted in awhile, but I wanted to offer an update to those of
you who followed our story with our little bundle of spunk, Aggie.
We helped Aggie cross over this morning, and it was one of the hardest
things I've had to do.  It was also the right thing to do.  Her anemia
caused her to gasp for air since yesterday evening, and she was starting
to involuntarily shake, could no longer walk, make it to the litter
box, and could barely raise her head to watch the lizards running around
our patio.  She was my little valiant fighter for 7 years, but
ultimately FELV took her from me.  We tried everything short of a
transfusion, and it just wasn't enough.
I firmly
believe that LTCI bought us about a year of good quality time.  Her
bloodwork was taking a VERY marked decline last June, and LTCI reversed it.
Unfortunately, FELV is a tough nut to crack and there was only so much
we could do.

It was very peaceful, she just went to sleep while we
sang her song to her , and told her what a blessing she has been in our
life.  If love could heal, she'd have been the healthiest cat ever.  But
right now, she's not in any pain, no more seizures, no more force
feeding, no more shots, and only peace.

There is a void in my home, and my heart right now.  But I am so, so
thankful to have had her at all.  I didn't even like cats before I met
her, and now I'm a sucker for them!

Thank you for your advice, your collective knowledge, and more importantly, for
the kindness you show to everyone who is dealing with this nasty disease.

Peace to all of you, and good luck on your journeys with your beloved
fuzzbuckets.

That's what I have always been told.  Let a bite wound bleed freely for as long
as possible to wash out the bacteria.  Bacteria from a FeLV kitty is no
different than from any other cat.  They all can lead to a bad infection.  Let
it bleed, wash with soap and hot water, rinse with hydrogen peroxide, soak i
Epsom salts added to hot water and watch for signs of infection.

I've had many that have healed just fine and a few that required an antibiotic.

I believe it also helps to make the wound bleed some before you start
treating it with Neosporin or whatever. I think the idea is to get at least
some of the bad bugs out of it that way. Then, of course, a thorough,
thorough washing and the antibiotic cream.

2011-06-03 Thread Sharyl
I buy mine on line from vetmeds4pets.  An UK company that sells Frontline Combo
which is exactly the same as Frontline Plus just the European version.
Shipping is a flat $4.08.  You can get a 12 pack for cats for $64.08.
http://www.vetmeds4pets.co.uk/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=17products_id=150osCsid=1d74d06c5731f73aa7a9a85ef391d33d

I buy the large dog version, put it in a small jar any syringe out the amount I
need for each cat.  Same ingredients just a little less of one in the dog
version vs the cat.  Like you I have too many cats to use the stuff you can buy
in the stores here.

For those that use Revolution they have the Stronghold, the UK version.

 Brewer's Yeast and Garlic

Adding a yeast supplement to your cat's diet has been shown by some studies
to significantly reduce the number of fleas on your cat. However, some
veterinarians claim that both Brewer's yeast and garlic treatments are
ineffective, and that no controlled scientific or clinical tests have shown
these two ingredients to have any effect on fleas. Dr. Pitcairn's (author of
Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs Cats)
experience with yeast has shown some favorable effects, particularly when
 the cat's health is good.

Brewer's yeast tablets may act as a flea repellent (working from the inside
out). You can buy Brewer's yeast tablets and give these to your cat as a
treat. You can also rub the yeast directly into your cat's coat.

Raw garlic is considered another natural flea control treatment that may
also act as a flea repellent. It is supposed to make your cat's blood
unappealing to fleas. One recommendation is to crush a little garlic in your
cat's food everyday while you are fighting fleas. But please note that there
is some debate as to how safe garlic is for your feline friend. You may also
be able to find garlic tablets to give to your cat as treats.

Brewer's yeast and garlic are supposed to be relatively harmless to your
cat, so if you give yeast or garlic to your cat as a natural flea control
treatment, you can safely judge for yourself whether they offer any flea
protection or flea control for your cat.

Combination Brewer's yeast and garlic tablets can also be given to your cat
as a treat, although some cats are too finicky to consider this a treat.

Sara, a teen Mom really isn't considered an older kitty.  I'd assume both the
Momma and kitten are positive until you get a negative test.   The FeLV+
kittens I have rescued were all healthy and thriving until the leukemia raised
it's ugly head when they were about a yr old.  Even though I hate to use weak

all their tests.

We have a teen Mom kitty who tested weak positive on the felv/fiv snap test 1
month after she was rescued. She had 3 kittens on a cold day out in the open
before we found her. 1 kitten died the first day b/c she wasn't keeping him
warm, 2nd one died within a week (Mom rejected we tried to BF but he faded),
3rd kitten survived conjunctivits, and is small but growing daily and eating
really well.

Since she tested weak positive, should we rest on the ELISA (sent to lab)
test
to make sure she even has it? We need to know b/c her surviving kitten may or
may not have FeLV, depending on whether this is a false positive or if she's
fighting off the infection from past exposure The kitten is only 6 weeks old,
and we heard testing him now won't mean anything, so we'd have to start testing
him in 1 month, then again after that IF the Mom is indeed felv positive.
We're
just not sure if we should assume he is felv positive b/c of the Mom's snap
test
result, which I know is notoriously faulty, esp. on older kitties like this.

Thanks in advance,

First off THERE IS NO CURE for FeLV.
I have heard of all kinds of things that are supposed to give great
extensions of life to cats with FeLV, but have yet to see any kind of results.
After 8 years of specializing in nothing but Fe-Luk cats i have found that,
love, attention, basic supplements ( iron,L-lysine, and the like) are the best
treatments for them.
Adding things like high O2 water helps as well.( moving water not in a bowl).
I know that many are going to say things like interferon, transfusions and like
are good for them but they only prolong the inevitable.  This virus will at
some point in the cats life cause issues that will have grave consequences.

I wish it were only us humans that were going to miss Chanel. She was a
beautiful solid white little princess that came to my rescue from Animal
Services because she was FELV+. She spent a few days as the only cat in her
room before 5 tiny new black and white additions arrived. They were only 9
weeks and scared to be in a new place. Miss Chanel didn't hesitate to take over
mommy duties immediately. She would let them crawl on her and chirp to them
when they were getting in trouble. Those kittens loved her perhaps more than I
did. When I arrived on Monday and found her she was still not alone. Her little
friends were snuggled up to her as if to keep her warm. It tore my heart out to
take her away. I miss her terribly but the fun loving kitten room just isn't
the same. I'm hoping she's watching over them from wherever she is and when

October from Lymphoma and anemia. Rosie is our 6th and last FeLV kitty-her 4
brothers
passed in their first year from anemia, despite all  our efforts. I have never
felt so defeated
and empty in my life. I did not have a clue about FeLV when we rescued the
feral
babies.
It has been a long and sad 2 years, Rosie and Murphy each just made it to 2 1/2
yrs old.
Bless all of you fighting this battle-it is a long, and difficult journey, but
these babies deserve
all the love in the world.  Alice with Miso and Sachi-the 2 negatives we
adopted
when Rosie
got so depressed when she was left alone after Murphy passed.

Dearest Terrie,
I was saddened to read of your dear husbands illness.  Of course you need to
be with him at this difficult time.  As someone who will turn 64 this year, I
agree he far too young to be facing this.

You both are in my thoughts and prayers
Sharyl

Hi all,
I'm taking some time off from rescue due to my husband's illness. He has liver
failure and is not a candidate for a transplant. He has been hospitalized 2
times this month and once last month he was placed into a skill nursing
facility since the 18th of February after the first trip to the hospital.
He is in the end final stage of his disease his liver has stopped working.
Can die at any given time. He is being given all the pain meds he wants for
comfort so he will most likely fall asleep an never wake up again.
I want to make myself available at all times for him.
He is only 64 years old... I know to some of you that may sound old but it
isn't really.
Hospice has been part of this as well to help me cope with all of this. Hospice
is available to me 24 hours a day.

Sincerely,
Terrie
