Re: [MBZ] Hey, You Screwed Up -

2020-09-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Guy I used to know had a piston paperweight, it had multiple deep imprints
of a screw or nut or something. The damage was found when the engine (some
American muscle car) was rebuilt for other reasons, he thought it was
pretty funny how such damage was unknown and not suspected until they took
it apart.

Once I dropped a nut down the oil drain return (from the head into the oil
pan) on a '90 Honda Accord. I panicked, felt sick, was just beating myself
up. Talked to a mechanic about how to pull the oil pan, he laughed, then
he loaned me a magnetic retrieval tool, I stuck that down the oil drain and
'click' the nut came right back out. Whew! Turns out it only made it a
few inches down the drain. Since then I'm very careful to plug up such
holes with rags or paper towels.

My '87 300TD (The White Whale) is coming up on 399k miles, I've put on

12 years now. Engine and transmission are very strong but she does use
about a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so.

[MBZ] OT Proclamation on Patriot Day, 2020

2020-09-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
In 2001, our Nation, united under God, made an unbreakable promise never
to forget the nearly 3,000 innocent Americans who were senselessly killed
on September 11. On this sacred day — Patriot Day — we solemnly honor that
commitment. As the bells toll, we call by name those who perished in the
terrorist attacks in New York, New York; Arlington, Virginia; and
Shanksville, Pennsylvania. In cities and towns across our great country,
we stand in solidarity to remember the victims and mourn their stolen hopes
and dreams.

On a day that began as ordinary as any other, terrorists carrying out a
sadistic plan murdered thousands of our fellow compatriots. With shock and
disbelief, we watched our first responders, encumbered by heavy equipment
and hindered by debris and smoke, rush with conviction and courage into the
void to rescue those in despair. With pride and sorrow, we felt the
tremendous bravery of those aboard Flight 93, who summoned the courage to
charge the terrorists in a counterattack that saved countless American
lives. As the day closed, America steadied its resolve to hold accountable
those who had attacked us and to ensure it would never happen again.

The courage, heroism, and resilience Americans displayed on 9/11, and in
its aftermath, are perpetual testaments to the spirit of our country.
While our Nation was anguished by this attack, the grit displayed that day
— the very essence of America — was a reminder that our citizens have never
failed to rise to the occasion. Heroes sprang into action in the face of
great peril to help save their fellow Americans. Many laid down their
lives. As we reflect on the events of that September morning, let us
recommit to embrace the stalwart bravery displayed and reaffirm our
dedication to defending liberty from all who wish to deny it.

To fulfill our collective promise never to forget, we impart the memory of
that fateful day to our children and grandchildren. The smoke that rose
from the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the Pennsylvania field carried away
the souls of innocent Americans. As we recall the images of our American
Flag raised from the ashes of Ground Zero and the Pentagon, we are reminded
that good triumphs over evil. We recommit ourselves to fortifying our
cherished American values so that future generations will know in their
souls that the United States is the land of the free and the home of the
brave.

This Patriot Day, we commemorate the lives of those who perished on
September 11, 2001, we pray for the families who carry on their legacies,
and we honor the unmatched bravery of our Nation’s first responders. We
also commend those who, in the days and years following the attack,
answered the call to serve our country and continue to risk their lives in
defense of the matchless blessings of freedom.

By a joint resolution approved December 18, 2001 (Public Law 107-89), the
Congress designated September 11 of each year as “Patriot Day.”

NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of
America, do hereby proclaim September 11, 2020, as Patriot Day. I call
upon all departments, agencies, and instrumentalities of the United States
to display the flag of the United States at half-staff on Patriot Day in
honor of the innocent people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
I invite the Governors of the United States and its Territories and
interested organizations and individuals to join in this observance. I
call upon the people of the United States to participate in community
service in honor of the innocent people we lost that day and to observe a
moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time to honor
those victims who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks of
September 11, 2001.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this tenth day of
September, in the year of our Lord two thousand twenty, and of the
Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and
forty-fifth.
DONALD J. TRUMP

[MBZ] OT Wuhan Red Death - Keeping Perspective

2020-08-21 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
This Doc makes some good points. I'll summarize.

1) For children, far more are dying from seasonal flu than from the Wuhan
Red Death (aka coronavirus). Let me repeat that: Deaths from seasonal flu
FAR EXCEED deaths from WRD in the pediatric population. This is important,
parents should be empowered to decide what is safe and what is not safe for
their children, and clearly the risk of illness or death from WRD should
not be a consideration that keeps kids out of school.

2) The impact of the response to the virus is far worse for kids than the
virus itself. Suicides are up 25% (in kids), suicidal ideation has
doubled, and depression is up 400%. What society chooses to do this to
their children? Answer: follow the money, who is benefiting from this?

https://youtu.be/1mfhZSrSngQ

Also some very good points on Hydroxychloroquine and how that has become a
political football.

Re: [MBZ] W116 windshield glass

2020-08-16 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I suppose on a nice car with comprehensive insurance (USAA) I might be able
to insist on the dealer glass, but all my cars are older than 1996 so I
can't really justify comprehensive insurance. Maybe once I get the '95 124
Cabriolet going I'll put comprehensive on that, if it progresses beyond
beater condition.

Ouch, that stinks. I'll bet there is aftermarket glass available.

The MB dealer price for a windshield on my 124 sedan was only $500 for the
part, I thought that wasn't too bad, but they will only sell the glass with
an installation which is another $300 or more I'll bet.

I'm convinced that the factory glass is thicker and will last longer.

Re: [MBZ] Problems with Windows 10 Laptop

2020-08-11 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I have a Win10 box for work, which will appear to be sending / receiving
traffic (flashing lights on the ethernet port) even when "off", and when
I'm at home I just unplug the cable. This computer does wake up if
sleeping (most of the time, sometimes I also have to do the hard reset).
Our home laptop with Win10 Pro has never had a problem waking up, but it is
always on WiFi.

I suspect the appearance of traffic on the ethernet cable is some Win10
'feature' so that it can connect to an enterprise network server (or a MS
server) to update afterhours.

Re: [MBZ] Opinions needed on flooring

2020-08-10 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Saving any of that floor is a waste of time then, and at ~$50 per hour you
need to get the job done quickly. Tile work is probably worth a lot more
than $50 per hour, so material is very cheap compared to labor. In your
place, I'd do it once and do it right, rip it all up and slap down
waterproof laminate, or put down a real tile floor using the correct
thickness of subfloor and cement backerboard and then quality tile. IIRC
correctly from when I did our kitchen floor about 15 years ago, the
subfloor and the cement backerboard with the tile cement in between them
end up to be about 3/4 of an inch thick, and very stiff; on top of that is
another layer of cement to hold the tile, and then the tile, so by the time
you are done the sandwich of material is about an inch thick or even more,
very stiff and very strong.

That is the name to not offend wymen, SJW version, probably meant to

Re: [MBZ] Dishwasher draining

2020-07-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well, how much do you want to mess with it, that is the big question, or do
you just throw it out and get a new one.

How hard is it to open up the machine to get to the control card? If
that's not too hard, and you are going to get paid for a new machine by the
home warranty people, do you want to spend their money on the old machine?
What happens if you fix this machine, then in another year or two it breaks
and you make another claim, will they say "No we totaled that washer
before, paid on that, so no warranty coverage for YOU!".

Re: [MBZ] Mask wearing

2020-07-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I watched about the first 20 minutes, the first speaker went full $5 word
mode, and it was getting pretty hard for me to follow. It sounded like he
was saying that the virus can infect a person via mouth, nose, eyes, and
throat and lungs. Wearing a mask that increases a person's tendency to
touch their face seems counterproductive to me. There is also no standard
for the mask type, and no training and no enforcement. I see lots of
people that wear the mask so it covers their mouth but not their nose. And
then there are the people wearing balaclavas and bandannas like they are
playing cowboys and Indians. Lady I met the other day was making her own
masks out of panty hose or something, so they had some color to them but
did not impede breathing and make her glasses fog up, basically just mesh.

Sweden's death rate has been in steady decline, now down to about 10 people
per day, from a high of 100 per day. I'd say their approach is looking
like it worked out just fine. Compare them to Belgium, which went the full
lock-down route, and it is clear that lock-down vs. no lock-down does not
seem to change how the Wuhan Red Death moves through the population, but
the economic impacts are sure different. Belgium had a peak of 300 per
day, and is also now down to about 2 per day. Note that Sweden and Belgium
have very similar size populations. Rather than blindly accepting what
they put on the evening news, I like to check some facts for myself, there
are plenty of websites that have tracking numbers. I like this one:

I have a Whirlpool cheapo that had a similar issue, the drain pump would
not drain. I replaced the drain pump, still no drain action. Only other
parts left were the wiring and the control board. I tested the wires, they
seemed to be fine, so I replaced the control board and the problem was
fixed.

How much is a new control board?

Another thing that I've heard is going on, the rich get the instant test,
and only go into treatment if needed. The poor get the slow test, and
while waiting for the results they get hospitalized in a room full of other
poor people also waiting for test results, so if they didn't have it when
they arrived, they surely end up with the Wuhan Red Death by the time they
leave. "Here's your mask, wait over there, we'll tell you when you're
sick!" Personally I'm going to do everything I can to stay away from
Hospitals, too many people die there.

Re: [MBZ] OT Study: Respiratory virus shedding in exhaled breath and efficacy of face masks

2020-07-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Thanks Karl, I took a quick look at the first three on your list. The
first discusses the fluid flow of droplets from coughing and sneezing, and
yes that is pretty much common sense that if one is coughing / sneezing
then wearing a mask is a good thing. No argument there. Even better, do
what has always been recommended
by medical professionals: Stay home when you are sick!

The second paper relies on a lot of assumptions and estimates and (here we
go again) models to reach their conclusions. We all know how dishonest
researchers can manipulate the models (see global warming) to get the
results we want. No thanks.

The third paper is not yet peer reviewed but strongly recommends that
countries that had their populations wear masks saw a large decrease in the
infection rate. However some countries that did not impose mask wearing
also did not suffer high infection rates. Hmmm, that is a curious bit of
data, what could be going on there? My guess: this paper does not account
for differences in medical treatment regimens (use of HCQ and Budesonide
and other treatments). I like this paper, but I think they need to re-run
their models and take into account the factor of medical treatment. This
one has promise for actually producing good science to support mask wearing
(to be determined yet), and I like that they also take into account border
closings (86% decrease in mortality rate when international travel was
restricted) and testing / tracing (did not significantly reduce mortality
rate). Obesity and an older population are also major factors in an
increased mortality rate.

So, are masks effective? I think they are, they certainly can reduce the
infection rate. How effective, and how much liberty do we give away in the
interest of reducing the risk of living? I'd much rather that our elected
representatives focus on providing the public with reliable information on
individual actions that will reduce the infection rate, promoting good
hygiene practices, and making possible the medical treatments that are safe
and effective. The use of bad models and the confusing and contradictory
advice from "experts" has severely damaged the public's faith in
government. Personally, if I become ill with this disease, I'll ask my
doctor about HCQ and Budesonide as treatment options. Until then, life is
worth living so let's get on with it.

Re: [MBZ] OT Study: Respiratory virus shedding in exhaled breath and efficacy of face masks

2020-07-20 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Yes, those that would trade liberty for security deserve neither. If masks
are so effective, why didn't they use them in prisons and jails and keep
all those criminals locked up? Might not have such a shocking rise in
violent crimes in our major cities if they kept the criminals locked up.

If I were in a high risk group, I'd be very diligent about social
distancing, wearing an N95 mask when indoors in a public, and practicing
great hygiene (hand sanitizer, frequent hand washing, using the
disinfecting wipes). Perhaps I'd even wear disposable gloves in stores and
businesses. That would allow all those without my concerns to go on with
life, and build up the herd immunity.

We've flattened the curve, the virus is going to spread no matter what we
do. In my opinion, the faster we let it run its course and get to herd
immunity, the better off we will all be and life can return to normal.

Re: [MBZ] Must have tool

2020-07-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
On my 124 cars that don't have a drain valve on the radiator, I use the
block drain, stick a rubber hose on that and direct into a bucket or
whatever. That gets a lot of it out, and then I use a big wide low pan
under the lower radiator hose, and put a low bucket in the pan to try to
catch the most volume and then the pan catches the rest. Hard to do all
this without spilling any, but I can keep it down to a very manageable
mess, and keep the coolant clean enough to re-use if desired.

[MBZ] OT Study: Respiratory virus shedding in exhaled breath and efficacy of face masks

2020-07-19 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41591-020-0843-2

Read the whole study at least through the Discussion, don't stop at the
abstract.

"Some health authorities recommend that masks be worn by ill individuals to
prevent onward transmission (source control)4
,8
. Surgical face
masks were originally introduced to protect patients from wound infection
and contamination from surgeons (the wearer) during surgical procedures,
and were later adopted to protect healthcare workers against acquiring
infection from their patients. However, most of the existing evidence on
the filtering efficacy of face masks and respirators comes from in vitro
experiments with nonbiological particles9
,10
, which may not
be generalizable to infectious respiratory virus droplets. There is little
information on the efficacy of face masks in filtering respiratory viruses
and reducing viral release from an individual with respiratory infections8
, and most
research has focused on influenza11
,12
.

Here we aimed to explore the importance of respiratory droplet and aerosol
routes of transmission with a particular focus on coronaviruses, influenza
viruses and rhinoviruses, by quantifying the amount of respiratory virus in
exhaled breath of participants with medically attended ARIs and determining
the potential efficacy of surgical face masks to prevent respiratory virus
transmission."

Key parts from the Discussion:

" Among the samples collected without a face mask, we found that the
majority of participants with influenza virus and coronavirus infection did
not shed detectable virus in respiratory droplets or aerosols, whereas for
rhinovirus we detected virus in aerosols in 19 of 34 (56%) participants
(compared to 4 of 10 (40%) for coronavirus and 8 of 23 (35%) for
influenza). For those who did shed virus in respiratory droplets and
aerosols, viral load in both tended to be low (Fig. 1
). Given the high
collection efficiency of the G-II (ref. 19
) and given
that each exhaled breath collection was conducted for 30 min, this might
imply that prolonged close contact would be required for transmission to
occur, even if transmission was primarily via aerosols, as has been
described for rhinovirus colds."

" The major limitation of our study was the large proportion of
participants with undetectable viral shedding in exhaled breath for each of
the viruses studied. We could have increased the sampling duration beyond
30 min to increase the viral shedding being captured, at the cost of
acceptability in some participants. An alternative approach would be to
invite participants to perform forced coughs during exhaled breath
collection12 .
However, it was the aim of our present study to focus on recovering
respiratory virus in exhaled breath in a real-life situation and we
expected that some individuals during an acute respiratory illness would
not cough much or at all."

Here in South Carolina, we have about 2000 new cases reported. Let's say
for each person with a positive case, there's another 10 that are infected,
so perhaps there are 20,000 people out there in South Carolina with Wuhan
Red Death (WRD). State population is about 5,000,000 which means that
about 0.4% of the population MIGHT be walking around with WRD. So if I go
to Costco, and there are about 200 people in the store, maybe one of them
is infected.

I'm about 50, in good health with none of the health conditions that
"experts" think might make me more likely to get seriously ill or die from
this, so I'm not too worried. If there is one person that is sick, and for
30 minutes of them breathing next to me there's about a 6 in 10 chance that
they aren't expelling any virii in their breath, and they don't cough on
me, then neither they nor I really need a mask, right? I don't stay next
to anyone for 30 minutes in any store that I go to, generally I'm in and
out in 30 minutes or less.

I think you're onto it with the testing comment Curt.

The testing is really NOT inspiring any confidence in the numbers. Two old
ladies in Houston were waiting outside in the heat and humidity to get
tested after they had filled out the paperwork, got too hot and decided to
leave before getting swabbed. Couple days later they both get notified
that they are positive. Too many reports of testing centers in FL which
have 80% or more of the test kits reported as positive, and then when
challenged they say "oh my bad, that was 0.8x%, not 8x%". Couple of
skeptical nurses took sterile swabs directly from package and inserted into
the lab kit (no swab, going from sterile to sterile with some air exposure
which maybe might have the virus floating around I guess) and send them in
and "surprise, you're positive for the WRD!"

Re: [MBZ] So basically it is airborne and anything less than a N95 is a waste of time?

2020-07-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Read it again Curt, it says the particles are so small (1-2 microns) that
they remain airborne, which means they flow with the air right through and
around the surgical mask.

https://blogs.cdc.gov/niosh-science-blog/2017/07/06/elastomerics/

" Surgical masks are *not* respirators. They are disposable coverings
designed to be loose-fitting over the user’s nose and mouth. These
loose-fitting masks leave gaps between the mask and the wearer’s face
through which harmful particles may pass. Since the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) does not address the fit function of masks and
surgical masks are not NIOSH approved, the mask may not be used in
situations covered by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
within areas requiring the use of respiratory protection. Therefore
surgical masks should never be used for protection against infectious
aerosolized particles."

My advice: Wash your hands / use sanitizer often, stay away from those
coughing and sneezing, talk with your doc in advance about treatment
options beforehand (hydroxychloroquine, budesonide, etc) so you have an
idea of what to do if you feel ill or know you are exposed. If some other
ritual makes you feel safe (I'll be carrying my firearm of choice and
riding in a very safe car, a Mercedes-Benz) then go for it.

Re: [MBZ] The lack of evidence lockdowns actually worked is a world scandal

2020-07-08 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
So I'll ask one more time. Where's the study? Where's the science? Sure,
we all know that wearing a mask when working in a hospital setting is
valid, but that is part of an ensemble of protective equipment in a
controlled setting. Sure, when one is sick, wearing a mask to catch the
droplets when you cough or sneeze is valid. No argument there.

It seems like the only thing that is driving the mask thing is fear. Plain
raw fear. That and the desire to impose control on your fellow man.

For the record, I do wear a mask when I go into a store. I notice a fair
percentage of people here wear the mask below their nose, so only the mouth
is covered,

Hand sanitizer and hand washing are far more effective, in my opinion.

[MBZ] OT Peer reviewed study on Hydroxychloroquine (HCL)

2020-07-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
https://www.ijidonline.com/article/S1201-9712(20)30534-8/fulltext

Bottom Line Up Front: study found that HCL (my acronym) can reduce death
from COVID-19 by 50%. Think about that: we could be at around 65k deaths
here in the US, instead of around 130k.

Note that this study was in a hospital setting, and the authors are also
performing a study on prophylactic use of HCL. I'll go out on a limb and
bet you all $1 that the next study will also indicate that HCL is
beneficial at 50% or more.

Re: [MBZ] OT Wuhan Red Death mortality rate study

2020-06-16 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Some asked a question earlier in this thread about how the Wuhan Red Death
compares to past pandemics. Earlier I had looked at numbers from past
epidemics, and I was struck by the pattern that these tend to occur about
every ten years, especially in recent history.

Asian Flu, 1957-58. 116,000 US deaths, US population was ~172 million

Hong Kong Flu, 1968, 100,000 US deaths, population was ~201 million

Avian Flu, 1997, isolated to Hong Kong with 18 deaths

SARS, 2003, world wide only ~8000 were infected and ~780 died.

H1N1 swine flu, 2009-10, 12,469 US deaths, population was ~309 million

MERS, Outbreak in 2012, total to date of 2494 cases, 858 deaths, mostly in
Saudi Arabia and Korea.

WRD outbreak, 2020, 119,000 US deaths so far, population is ~331 million

So far, the Asian Flu of '57-'58 and the Hong Kong Flu of '68 killed a
higher percentage of our population than the current WRD virus. We did not
lock down our economy and suffer a recession back then, something to
remember the next time one of these comes around.

Dexamethasone proves first life-saving drug

A cheap and widely available drug can help save the lives of patients

The low-dose steroid treatment dexamethasone is a major breakthrough in the
fight against the deadly virus, UK experts say.

The drug is part of the world's biggest trial testing existing treatments

It cut the risk of death by a third for patients on ventilators. For those
on oxygen, it cut deaths by a fifth.

Was FEMA activated for any of the past pandemics? What was different about
this pandemic that rated FEMA to be activated?

The main issue that I see is that we relied on a terribly flawed model at
the start, and were operating without a clear understanding of the virus,
and then the media began stoking the fear, and in every way that the
President tried to lead, he was viciously attacked and resisted, called a

Re: [MBZ] I think I managed to blow the head gasket on my e300

2020-06-07 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Well the bottom hose is not supposed to get hot, the radiator is supposed
to cool off the coolant, so maybe it will be warmish. Really hot or stays
cold would be problems.

Used radiator from a car that had the head off, hmmm, maybe a bad radiator
blew the headgasket or cracked the head on that car? Yeah, be suspicious
of that radiator.

Re: [MBZ] Sealing tin roof

2020-05-29 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I tried Flex Seal to fix the rust-through pin holes in my chimney cap. It
held up for about a year maybe a little more.

There are some commercial products that are longer lasting for such roof
repairs, basically you need something that you put down a coat with a
roller, than while it is still sticky and tacky you lay on a layer of
fabric, and then paint more coats on top. Search for roof sealer / roof
repair.

All of the above are temporary. You really need a new roof.

Re: [MBZ] W123 Brake master cylinder fallout

2020-05-29 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
What you are describing are classic symptoms of air in the system, fixed
with proper bleeding. I would start with that.

May as well replace that caliper now, no sense at all in delaying repair
(the ability to stop is far more important than the ability to go).

If the brake pedal feel doesn't improve with proper bleeding, I'd have the
run-out on all the rotors checked (a warped rotor will constantly push the
pads further back into the caliper, requiring more brake pedal travel each
time you apply the brakes because you have to first move those pads back
into contact with the rotor).

If the run-out is fine, then it would make sense to replace the booster.

[MBZ] OT: Studies say HCQ works, for outpatient / early applications

2020-05-29 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
https://academic.oup.com/aje/advance-article/doi/10.1093/aje/kwaa093/5847586

Abstract

More than 1.6 million Americans have been infected with SARS-CoV-2 and >10
times that number carry antibodies to it. High-risk patients presenting
with progressing symptomatic disease have only hospitalization treatment
with its high mortality. An outpatient treatment that prevents
hospitalization is desperately needed. Two candidate medications have been
widely discussed: remdesivir, and hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin.
Remdesivir has shown mild effectiveness in hospitalized inpatients, but no
trials have been registered in outpatients.

Hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin has been widely misrepresented in both
clinical reports and public media, and outpatient trials results are not
expected until September. *Early outpatient illness is very different than
later hospitalized florid disease and the treatments differ*. Evidence
about use of hydroxychloroquine alone, or of
hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin in inpatients, is irrelevant concerning
efficacy of the pair in early high-risk outpatient disease.

*Five studies, including two controlled clinical trials, have demonstrated
significant major outpatient treatment efficacy*.
Hydroxychloroquine+azithromycin has been used as standard-of-care in more
than 300,000 older adults with multicomorbidities, with estimated
proportion diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmias attributable to the
medications 47/100,000 users, of which estimated mortality is 9/100,000
users, compared to the 10,000 Americans now dying each week. *These
medications need to be widely available and promoted immediately for
physicians to prescribe*.

[MBZ] OT - This Thread is Dead, Jim

2020-05-27 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
So I was thinking about the admin tools, and how hard it is to stop replies
to a thread that is deemed to be dead by list mom or list dad.

Is there a way to change the subject line to indicate "DEAD"? That may
provide a more visible flag to people who get into the conversation late,
and don't see the closure because they are reading the emails in chrono
order from oldest to youngest.

Alternatively, flag that subject line in the list serv software such that
all replies to that subject get returned to sender with "Dead Thread" or
somesuch in the reply?

I'm sure there is some way to do this.

Maybe the penalty will be automatic enrollment into OkieTalk and send the
reply there, so the responder can carry on in the appropriate channel.

Re: [MBZ] OT Wuhan Red Death: Can't trust the numbers

2020-05-26 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I read an article earlier today that talked about the roles of who decides
if a death is counted as COVID or not. The Doctor signs the death
certificate, and that is the official cause of death, and I'm sure Karl is
right in that the vast majority are doing the right thing and making the
best call they can.

The disconnect happens when the county / state report up their numbers to
the CDC, because they are under no obligation to use the cause of death
listed on the certificate. They follow the CDC guidelines, which don't
even require a positive test for WRD (Wuhan Red Death) and so there is
plenty of opportunity to steer the numbers. FL is accused of
under-reporting, and NY is accused of over-reporting.

As usual, we've got the best government that money can buy, and as a result
the "official" numbers are not really trusted by anybody, making a
reasonable debate very difficult to have.

That is all, carry on.

Re: [MBZ] OT Wuhan Red Death: Can't trust the numbers

2020-05-26 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Humans are curious, especially curious about human death. Where someone
got infected and later that person died, the "where" "how" and "what"
killed them are what we want to know. Many people die in the hospital,
knowing that doesn't scratch the itch. Knowing where they were and how
they got infected, that is more important to me and I suspect most humans.

Another interesting fact about this disease: many of the infections occur
in clusters in households where people are locked down / social
distancing. I suspect stigma, fear of treatment and belief that there is
no treatment / no cure are keeping people at home too long, and then when
they go to the hospital or emergency room, if they are not "sick enough"
they get sent right back home with orders to self quarantine. These
actions pretty much ensure that everyone or most of the people in that
house get infected.

[MBZ] OT Win10 PC audio - no output via display port?

2020-05-24 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
A couple weeks ago, I could connect my Win10 laptop to our TV and watch
streaming internet video. Laptop has a display port, which connects to TV
via an adapter to convert to HDMI. This set up worked on two different TVs.

This morning, the video is displaying on the TV but the audio stays on the
laptop.

I've tried both TVs, same issue.

I suspect a recent update on the laptop has changed something. There's
only been a couple of updates recently, one of which was to Win10, so I
think I'm going to try to roll that back and see if the problem resolves.

2020-05-23 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
I watched a movie a few months ago, where a group escaped from a Siberian
gulag and walked across China to India. At one point they were nearly
going mad from the mosquitoes, and while hiding from locals, they observed
that none of the locals were bothered at all. Finally one of the group
runs up to a local and asks how they keep away the bugs, and the guy
explains that a local weed gives off a scent that the bugs can't stand, so
they weave the week into a ring that they wear as a necklace.

If this weed grows in Siberia / China, it will probably grow in Alaska.

Peter, here's a study that should bring you great comfort.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S092485792030145X?via%3Dihub

There is a very effective drug therapy that appears to be 100% effective at
preventing Wuhan Red Death from causing COVID-19. Rather than lock-down
and enforced mask wearing, vulnerable populations and those who feel they
are at threat from the disease can use this drug therapy.

No more need for masks, social isolation, lock-down, contact tracing,
forced quarantines, and other oppressive measures.

Re: [MBZ] OT: The Bug was Re: Sticking my neck out

2020-05-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
Peter,

How'd that isolation thing working in NYC? Over 80 deaths per 1000 cases.
Compare that with Florida, about 43 per 1000, and far less draconian
lock-down / isolation. Why are all those New Yorkers fleeing and heading
to their vacation homes (including in FL)?

We've got community spreading going on, the "test and trace" horse has left
the barn and is probably a few counties away. Testing, contact tracing and
isolating is a fantasy at this point. When the Chinese Communist Party
isolated Wuhan from all internal travel, but permitted international
flights out of Wuhan to all corners of the globe, those commies made sure
community spread was going on all over the globe. You can thank them.

Where is the science, where are the studies, that tell us that lock-down
and isolation works? Meanwhile, real life data is telling us that it does
not work.

Your civil liberties and rights may not mean much to you, but to many in
this country they are essential to having a job and feeding a family. If
you can afford to stay locked up in your house, no one is going to stop
you. If people not wearing masks is too risky for you, then stay away from
them. There are plenty of medical professionals against the idea that the
general public should be wearing masks in social situations, but that goes
against the narrative of fear perpetuated by the main stream media, so
their voice is never heard. Wearing a mask can impede the flow of oxygen
into the blood stream, reducing 02 levels and making the wearer MORE
susceptible to infection of lungs. Add increased touching of the face and
mask due to discomfort, and the risk of infection is going up.

Well SWMBO really likes to keep everything cold as possible so it lasts
longer. I guess I'll put the thermometer in the freezer and see what temp
we've got, than maybe bump that up.
