iTunes is getting it's act together looks like... I submitted my vidcast on Sunday nite and it was in the next day. They sent me an email to let me know. It may be a parent's 'responsibility' but don't we want to help when people need it? Even if someone is failing, does it mean their child should die? No, I'm not suggesting that. I'd hope everyone would do like these guys did, but I know most wouldn't (not judging this list, but the general population). I just think the 'break glass in case of emergency' is a good idea. I'd think the person that would get the memo on that would be the people employed by the service. Perhaps the person who was hired to police porn on MySpace could do it. They certainly aren't doing that job so they must have free time. RE: [videoblogging] A question for the group...
I go back and two between enjoying the fact that people recognize my name and then feeling a little weird when I get those bizarre emails from people who know just a little too much about you. One lady last year asked if I went to _ church in my town because she'd like to get to know me a little better (she was right, btw). She also knew where my kids went to school. I also had an IM fan who harassed me for a time last year. Sometimes it's rather creepy. As well, a blogger I know just deleted her email and web domain because of a stalker. But, with proper controls this kind of stuff can be handled. My kids are on heightened security at school and church and they can't even carpool or walk out class w/o permission either place. Also, their picture isn't allowed to be put on the web or newspaper through their school. I took measures to pull my address off of everywhere I know to remove it. Hopefully I'm a little more secure than I was last year. I do rather think it's neat that our lives and such will be chronicled so well for future use. I was a history major in college and I can't help but think that what we are doing now will be a boon to those given the task of understanding what life was like in our age. If history interests you I'd recommend IClaudius' vidcast. Last year, while doing some genealogical research at the National Archives, I had the chance to listen in on a conversation about which medium was the best for archiving records. A National Archives worker said that their research showed that in order of durability and longevity it was: * stone - last forever but not practical. * paper - we have papyrus documents that are two thousand years old, and medieval manuscripts that are five hundred years old that are still readable. The problem with paper is that it is too fragile. * Microfilm / microfiche - will last for decades even when in constant use, good for a hundred years. * Electronic media - standards and software change so fast it can become unusable in less than a decade. My former employer decided to move all their documentation (procedures, schematics, etc) to electronic media and thrash all the paper copies. In less than five years they found they had WordPerfect files they couldn't open, and Adobe dxf files that wouldn't open in newer versions of AutoCAD. The engineers on board the USS Ronald Reagan are having problems with the later today. I wonder if the programs we record today will be viewable in ten years from now never mind a hundred. What makes you think that? Look around your house / work for digital media from 10 years ago. Can you view the files on it now? Does your video camera/player support the formats of years gone by? No? Mine neither. We'll be the generation that leaves a whole pile of digital info behind when we are gone, but most of it will be useless. Even if the machines exists to view the info, all the media (CD/DVD etc) have built in obsolescence. It's very unlikely that today's data will survive 100 years into the future. Just playing devil's advocate and having no experience with this particular situation (as I could not find the link to the example on the news story), I can't help but feel like they are describing almost splog-like behavior. A site that links to your file, that subsequently pops up in a window launching a player, keeps them on the splog's site and offers up your content as if it is theirs, w/no link to your actual site? Normally I would say a hyplink can't be protected, but a hyperlink to a file only feels almost like pissed I get when I see someone hijack an RSS feed of a podcast and pass it off as their own. Of course, maybe I am misunderstanding this? Generally speaking, that is bullshit. Hyperlinking on the Internet should not be governed by any court. The article says that supercrosslive.com had been providing direct links to the live audiocasts of motorcycle racing events. Of course CNN wants a page link because it contains advertising... But direct links should be fine. Anyone should be able to link (not necessarily embed) any file that is public on the Internet. Specifically relating this to RSS, I think it makes hotlinking more accepted because there is an inherent intention to syndicate the original content. All this is becoming so common that I doubt the courts will be able to keep up for much longer. I hope the continued development of AJAX-like applications will eventually break down these out-dated laws. Check out this (4-part) article... http://www.andykessler.com/andy_kessler/2006/10/media_2uhoh_in_.html It says media is about control of a pipe. Thankfully, users are taking and demanding control. [videoblogging] CBS Just Joined With Sling
I sent the full article because this content is gone to the public after 24 hours (subscribers only). Robyn === CBS Deal With Sling Lets Users Upload TV Content, Legally Beta Test to Begin in Second Quarter 2007 By Abbey Klaassen Published: January 09, 2007 NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- One of CBS CEO Les Moonves's big announcements as he assumed the keynote stage at the International Consumer Electronics Show today included an invitation to viewers to steal snippets of his network's programming and share it with friends online. The invite comes via a beta test with Sling Media in which Slingbox owners can clip content from live and recorded programming, upload it to a public-facing web portal and share it with the world. Signifies major shift It's no stretch to suggest that a year ago this would have been every TV executive's nightmare. The move signals a realization among major media companies that they can't stop the YouTube effect -- people are going to post their favorite content clips online anyway. It's a kind of if you can't beat them, join them, legally philosophy. Quincy Smith, president of CBS Interactive, admitted that sometimes new solutions can come from unexpected places, including those that media companies may have previously pegged as disrupters. We think this new capability, if done with consideration for content owners, is intriguing and worthy of study, he said in a statement announcing the new test. A Slingbox device allows viewers to place shift TV programming. The box, which is the size of a brick, attaches to a TV and sends live and recorded programming to a PC or laptop with Slingplayer software loaded onto it. To clip a show, a Sling user simply streams a program to a computer and then indicates where they the clip should start and stop. While the procedure sounds confusing, it's easier than the current process of uploading TV clips to the internet -- to do that, viewers must have video tuner cards in their PCs and software to capture, encode and upload the clip. Ad model unclear Key for CBS will be the advertising component of the deal. Every clip that a Slingbox owner nabs and uploads will fall into a pool of inventory that CBS can sell against. The business model has not been finalized, but could include a revenue-sharing agreement -- CBS could sell the bulk of the ads or split the inventory; CBS might sell some of the ads against the clips and Sling might have a portion to sell others. Mr. Smith came to CBS two months ago from Allen Co., an investor in Sling, so he was familiar with the technology. Sling, meanwhile, launched an entertainment group a month ago, headed by former MTV digital chief Jason Hirschhorn. Mr. Hirschhorn's group has been charged with building a community around Sling, making it more of a platform than a piece of hardware and creating out of the box experiences (Mr. Hirschhorn's pun). 'Perfect accounting' And he points out that while doing such a test might be scary, clip culture is a reality. While media companies are striking deals with companies like YouTube, viewers are also uploading their own clips, and it's difficult for media companies to know exactly how many clips they have up at any given time. The Sling test creates perfect accounting, said Mr. Hirschhorn. You know exactly what's there.

RE: [videoblogging] Re: [video_vertigo] iPhone
Off the top of my head, the N800 has a faster processor (330mhz), additional memory (though the 770 could be easily hacked to have comparable memory -2g I think). Both run linux and there is a good community of people who develop for the 770. The 800 will have a similar community, no doubt. It's not a full-fledged UMPC, but it's close. For a real UMPC, you could look at the Samsung Q1 or possibly one of the nicer models from TabletKiosk. The tabletscape (like the blogosphere but tablet afficianados) is a great place to start looking for reviews on devices like this. I've watched at least 3 unboxings or full out reviews of the N800 this week and last week, so if you need some help locating some videos let me know. Tim, I didn't even think about the video conf through gtalk, but I probably should have. I agree that its probably useless as no one else video chats via gtalk yet. I also rarely find someone who can vid chat thru Skype. If you ever wanna chat, I'm Duzins on Skype. What did you think about the camera in general? If I considered this it would have to replace something I carry, possibly my phone or my mp3 player, but I don't think it even has the capabilities of phone, I mean other than Skype. The mp3 player replacement is a possibility. Its built-in videoconferencing over Google Talk was pretty cool - by far the best feature, though I still can't even find enough people to do videochats with me via Skype or iChat (anyone?). And it has nice video playback, audio, and a very sharp web browser (it seems like the screen has at least 100-dpi resolution). I couldn't help, when pulling out the stylus, thinking of Steve Jobs' dismissal from the MacWorld speech, something to the effect of nobody wants a stylus. It all looked pretty but the interface was decidedly not intuitive. I was actually stumped for a little bit trying to navigate around, a definite learning curve on all the menus, which were Windows-like, and a bunch of buttons on the device that are not clear at all as to their use. Ultimately, it's not a laptop replacement or a phone replacement -- it's yet a third device to have (or fourth, if you carry a MP3 player). So, for all its slickness, it may unfortunately go the way of the Newton, which also had a stylus, I believe. p.s. I still have, and love, my Newton, which works, though it's more a museum piece than anything else. Confessions of a Machead. findable when traveling. This limits its use to non-critical applications. I guess this is all to say... it's an evolving class of applications yet. One day it very well may be a killer device... but we're still way to early I think. It's still ahead of its time. Just my opinion. There is one final observation I have. I've been running around saying this like a broken record. It's about personal communication. The iphone, and indeed nearly ALL the killer apps so far lie in the realm of personal communications... and at the very least with the iPod in the realm of personal media. Nearly every function on the iPhone is a communications feature... the only ones that aren't are about personal media. i.e. my photos from iphoto... my songs... my videos. That apple sells TV shows, or movies... is really incosequential to this device... I doubt people will watch to many films or tv shows on the iPhone unless of course it plugs into the TV. ;) Even podcasting and videoblogging as early an iteration as they are fit into this sliding scale of personal communications and media. They're somewhere less personl then my photos, but somewhat more personal then tv shows and movies. The point is... personal communicaitons and personal media are the killer class of apps for personal computing... after all, can you think of a many reasons to have Word or Excell in your pocket? The pocket space is slowly getting figured out. -Mike On 1/14/07, Robyn Tippins [EMAIL PROTECTED] mailto:robyn%40sleepyblogger.com wrote: Off the top of my head, the N800 has a faster processor (330mhz), additional memory (though the 770 could be easily hacked to have comparable memory -2g I think). RE: [videoblogging] Re: DVD hacking?
Not speaking to the copyright issues, only the technical ones, my understanding is that a DVD is a finished file, and is certainly uneditable on the disc. Many have software that prevents easy burning as well. You can play it on your machine and capture the video in real time in a program like camtasia studio. As to reading the subtitles and indexing the clips in that way, I can't imagine that it's possible. Next what I would like to do is find the program which tells the DVD which subtitles to play. I want to be able to then edit the film segments I want and index these segments via the subtitles. Is that possible? The aim is to take the legal portion of a film (10% or less - I imagine) for educational language learning purposes. I would like to put the subtitles index on a website (private - not public) so that students can click on a subtitle and see the film segment and view the context and content of the said subtitle. Improvements in finger usage Improvements in dialog selection when using the Nokia N800 Internet Tablet with fingers and not the stylus pen. I was also delighted to read this: The Nokia N800 Internet Tablet is based on Nokia's desktop Linux based Operating System. The Maemo development platform was launched in 2005 to provide Open Source developers with the tools and opportunities to create innovative applications for use on Nokia's Internet Tablets. Users of the Nokia N800 will be able to benefit from a wide range of third party applications. Now as the N800 isnt a mobile phone, its not totally comparable to the iPhone, but when it comes to open development they put Apple to shame. So far Ive only heard about the camera being used for live video chat, so I dont even know if you can record clips with it. So I suspect this device isnt going to be as vlog-friendly as perhaps some other N-series Nokia devices, but time will tell and hopefully Im totally wrong. The 800x480 screen sounds very nice. As I have some sort of portable device fixation Ive tried various other devices, and have a UMPC. In practice Ive found even the most rudimentary mobile computing to be a bit painful - its amazing how often a proper keyboard is missed, how often you want the screen to be much larger (but the device be smaller), how things being slow feels even more painful when done on the move, and how rubbish battery performance still is for many devices. Im hoping much progress is made, but Im unsure really how things will work out. Certainly well designed software could help, but Im not holding my breath. Unfortunately my UMPC is the samsung one without a camera, although I could plug a USB webcam into it. So if anybody happens to have any questions about the UMPC platform, feel freee to ask. The price and battery life are all wrong at the moment. Its certainly a better weight and size than a normal tablet PC, but isnt pocket-sized so can seem annoyingly bulky sometimes. I think its only really worthwhile for people with specific needs, who travel a lot. And the size of the device makes me unsure whether its really a good basis for using as a camera, when pointing at anything other than yourself. Steve, Thanks for the offer. The main thing I wanted to know is if I could record a video on it and then do some editing and upload from the device. What sort of thing are you hoping to do with the camera? If there are any apps in particular that you are hoping to run on the UMPC, I'll be happy to evaluate them to see how well they run, and how easy it is to interract witht hem, using the Q1. Apart from hardware issues, the lack of widespread use of UMPC's so far, means that theres a lack of software thats been tailored to the platform, ie tweaking it for the lower res and finger/stylus input, although I havent actualyl found any compatibility issues that totally stopped an app from running, they are pretty standard PC's in most regards. Im thinking that the biggest leap in spec in the future maybe when sold state disks are used rather than harddrives, I think samsung have a version with a 32GB flash drive instead of hard drive, which should help with speed, ruggedness and battery life, but the price is absolutely crazy for the forseeable future. They do make simply lovely video-playback devices but Ive yet to evaluate whether video recording and editing ont hem feels good at all or whether it will prove to be painful. Im not clued up as to common USA fast mobile internet options, but if you have a phone with net access and the right capabilities, you can attach it to the UMPC via USB or Bluetooth and use it as a modem for net access where wifi is unavailable. Im looking for an excuse to make a few videos that dont require me to think too hard and get stuck in my usual perfectionist-loop, so if there is anything youd like to see running on the Q1 just say the word. RE: [videoblogging] Blogger Question
Moving to WP is surprisingly easy. I moved at the end of 2005 and it was a breeze. That'd be my suggestion, if it's something you are planning on doing anyway, rather than mucking away at a template at this point. IE does crazy things to a page, so it's a pain sometimes to get them to look similar. For instance, IE shows text a good bit larger. IE has trouble with transparencies (this depends). Good luck. The lack of a single model for the buying and accounting of video ads is also cited as a contributing factor. The dollars for online video buying are expected to come from television budgets, but until the online audience expands some marketers appear unwilling to make that shift. Estimates have buyers spending just 10 percent of their TV budget on streaming video by 2010, with most of that money going toward professional content from mainstream media. Bolt Media CEO Aaron Cohen says if independent producers are going to tap into serious advertising dollars, there needs to be effective syndication of content that can bring audience reach to niche videos. Even so, the lack of a universal rating and measurement models continues to be a stumbling block to advertisers who need to justify their expenditures. Also, the audience for web video is, to date, too fragmented to meet the needs of buyers looking for significant reach. The lack of a single model for the buying and accounting of video ads is also cited as a contributing factor. I agree with all three of those points. The inventory is very limited as far as content that they can use for their purposes. It's not that there aren't tons of videos. There aren't tons of videos that they feel they can guarantee a ROI on. Part of the reason for that is #2, that the audience is too fragmented. People that frequent youtube are the main audience for youtube videos, but not necessarily any other videos. Same thing for Revver. Same thing for DailyMotion, etc. There's too much selection to be able to guarantee that a certain number of eyeballs are going to be on such-and-such video. If you can't guarantee the viewers, you can't persuade the companies to buy advertisements on those videos for any worthwhile amount of money. Even if you could guarantee the eyeballs (views), there are a lot of different ways to place ads on or around videos. There's no guarantee that if someone sees the ad, they're going to click on it. If it's a post-roll ad, there's no guarantee the person's going to watch the video all the way to the end. Except in a very few cases, most of which we know about already, there's nothing that will allow advertisers to justify making the deals they want to make. Even if you have the eyeballs on a video, there's no way to quantify the demographics. If a video gets 100 views and 50 of them were from 8-year-olds with no buying power and no interest in clicking on lawnmower ads after watching a video of a kid falling off of a skateboard, the client isn't getting ROI, and the advertiser isn't doing his/her job properly. A lot of the behind-the-scenes of television is testing. Understanding the demographics. Understanding what group is likely to watch your show from 8-8:30pm on Tuesday night. If you know a bunch of 30-somethings are watching syndicated Seinfeld episodes (from the data you collected in testing), you know who to go to to sell advertising time... the companies that have products to sell to 30-somethings. You can't do that [yet] with the internet, because there's no telling who's using what computer, and there's no telling how many times that same person watched the same video. With television, you know how many people watched the shows because they all have accounts with the cable company. Maybe they all have special boxes that take account of when they watch what and report it back to a particular agency. If you can't quantify the audience, you can't justify the $$,$$$ expenditure to your client. No sale. The reason Super Bowl ads are so important is because so many people are GUARANTEED to be watching. The ROI on the money spent on A) creating the ad, and B) buying the air-time right before Prince performs live makes the whole proposition worthwhile for everyone involved. The dollars for online video buying are expected to come from television budgets, but until the online audience expands some marketers appear unwilling to make that shift. Estimates have buyers spending just 10 percent of their TV budget on streaming video by 2010, with most of that money going toward professional content from mainstream media. Hopefully, having this kind of approval mandate from the community will kickstart enthuse the winning team :) Rupert http://twittervlog.blogspot.com/ [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] Re: Joomla versus Zend PHP for Web 2.0 community
I've used Joomla, and from the point of view of a relative novice, Joomla was a breeze to setup. I installed the bridge and created an SMF forum that sat quite nicely in the middle of the Joomla setup. The contacts were all in the same database so there was no need to have people sign up for the Joomla site and the forum, it was very easily integrated. The Community Builder add-in was a boon as well, as many people are developing (free and cheap) for this module. It is hackable, as I was hacked on Joomla and they got into all my sites through this hole (they were on the same server). However, once hacked I hired a Joomla security expert and for $50 solved this issue. It took him about 5 minutes to fix it, and if you are more adept than I, you can even find the answer on the forums. I think he had to create a file and place it on the server and turn editing off on a few files. Was not a big deal at all. Drupal would be another I'd suggest. Wish I knew more about the other two platforms you mentioned. I mean, I know Ruby is hot and people seem to adore it, but it's WAY over my head so I'll stay mum on it. Good luck! So much comes down to the experience level of the person who wants the site, from their technical skills to how far theyve got a detailed concrete spec of what they need. Im not much good with money, but I guess the issue of exactly how much something should cost is not just about the work involved, but the perceived value of whats delivered, any sort of standard industry rates (eg programmers cost $xxx per day), and what the customer can afford or expects to pay. Being in real estate I imagine Dee will have come across similar issues in that field. Different developers will price things differently but I imagine some may base it on who the customer is, theres probably a perception that theres loads of money in real estate, wheras some charity of personal thing could potentially be done for love time rather than oodles of cash. Then there is the old sayings about beware of stuff that seems to cheap. Develoeprs who are just starting, or just want to do little work and throw together something thats mostly a site like they've made 100 times before, could offer you a great price but the support may not me there. There are surely no shortage of customers who have had a bad time with developers inn the past, either through spiralling costs timescales or poor results, and there are also many frustrated developers who have been driven wild by the customer changing mind on the spec etc, or fallen out of love with the framework, language or opensource project that they base their work on. Personally Id suggest, if you have more money than time or techie abilities, I would continue your research for a bit longer, and then ideally find a developer who has made sites with extremely similar functionality in the past. If you can look in their portfolio and find a site that is close to what you want in key ways, and has ideally been running for quite a while, with a similar number of users to what you envisage for your site, you are onto a winner. A certain amount of extra cost is worth it if it provides reasonable assurance that they can deliver the results you want. Also if they've already done a site with the same functionality, you will be armed with knowledge that prevents them charging you too much for custom code that they've actually already done for another client. And yeah, certainly from the liited details on spec you gave, the graphics design theming cost could be a considerable chunk of the total, as most of the functionality you mention already exists, there isnt too much wheel reinventing to be done. Oh yeah and you likely wont get any once answer to questions about which system is better. It will depend on the develop as most usually specialise in one or 2 systems, languages etc, have chosen those for their own good reasons, and are likely to argue that the alternatives are inferior. So long as they dont make your site out of something really obscure that few other developers use, and their timescales costs are right for you, thats probably the most you can ensure, or risk getting dragged into eternal techie argumnts about my drupal being bigger than your joomla, ruby on rails blowing goats, or php being inferior. I know this is sorta off topic for this group, but in a nutshell what I'm talking about is a high-end corporate videoblog - but it just can't look like a Wordpress or blip page. (No disrespect to them - I personally use and love both.) Currently we're hosted by an outside company whose interface lives within our site, but it's clunky - kinda ugly, confusing navigation, player doesn't look cool, encode and upload specs are narrow and video quality is unsatisfying. Our content includes graphics that require fullscreen viewing so we're aiming for the highest resolution possible at the smallest file size. We're shooting DV in a professionally lit studio, cutting on Avid and Sorenson squeezing. Here's what we need: 1. A host that can handle a large archive and hopefully can help us migrate smoothly. 2. Ease of posting (so non-tech employees can do it) 3. Embeddable player 4. Customizable and searchable interface (not just a player on a page) that can integrate seamlessly into our website with no external branding Obviously, we can spend some money on this endeavor. [videoblogging] totally wired teacher submission open
Any vlogging teachers out there? I know there are some on this list, so you may want to check this out. This July at the 2007 Ypulse Mashup in San Francisco, Yahoo! Teachers and the George Lucas Educational Foundation will honor a teacher who has successfully used social media (blogs, wikis, social networking, photo/video sharing or audio groups) in the classroom. The winner of the Totally Wired Teacher Award will have successfully navigated their school ecosystem and overcome challenges from parents and administrators in order to use technology, but because they understand how students use social media outside of school, they have persevered and worked collaboratively with students, ultimately sharing their insight and knowledge with the larger teaching community. If you, or a teacher you know is Totally Wired, you can nominate them by sending and email along with why you feel they are deserving to: Jim Daley at Edutopia. Re: [videoblogging] Re: live video streaming
I've used uStream and it worked well. I have also done Quicktime Server w/Quicktime Broadcaster, which was a breeze as well. I tried uStream for streaming video into SecondLife (for the main BlogHer sessions this year) and the company we were using for our build in SL could only accept Quicktime files (not sure if that's a SL thing or just per this company), but QT Server/Broadcaster was perfect. uStream has not let me down either, so I could easily recommend either of these. (this was on a private network/vpn, but would be similar if I had a public ip on the net for external people to access). another option u may want to consider is a streaming box such as slingbox. so similarly, you could connect your camera output to the input of the slingbox and let it handle the streaming (since that's what it's built for). if u use multiple cameras, then u might need a video mixer or video switcher prior to the input of slingbox, or maybe u don't mind the glitch/outage whilst swapping cables manually. then people download the slingbox viewer for free and connect to your feed. the slingbox costs around $150. though I don't think it's available in Aus, so you'd need to buy it off the net eg HongKong or UK site, and I think the licence is for non-commercial use (sounds like your project is?). slingplayer is available for multiple platforms including mobile devices such as phones, PDAs. slingbox is very simple to setup and use. the website has the instructions. plus this means u don't need to dedicate a computer to be the streaming server, you use the slingbox instead so I think in the long run it's a cheaper option. if u connect it to the tv, u can use the remote to change channels etc as well, or write an interface for the infared remote to perform other control functions u might require. I'm not sure if you can view the stream in vlc though - I think it's just the slingbox player. but if you're getting people to download vlc, then getting them to d/l slingbox player is similar? I used to do internet radio using ogg vorbis ( others prior to that) streaming via winamp (similar to live365 site - sometimes we'd use it as a relay site) but haven't done ogg theora / vorbis for video streaming. cheers Kath ps- you're from Warwick? programmers and UI developers should find a very open space. I remember before iTunes came out with their podcasting client, Rocketboom was getting slammed by literally 1000's of new and experimental audio and video distribution aggregators, most of which quickly faded away post-iTunes. It seems like there is room again for a new spirit and a better interface. #4 Be careful about the conversations you have: dont let this separation become more defined. Bring it all together in a way that people understand this is about democracy, choice and personalized content. This is where conferences hurt us if no one is there to discuss this. This is where Hulu viewers hurt us because they are closing their doors on things outside of their comfort zone. What concerns me most of all is that we really need companies like Revision3 to succeed. The independent content creator, and in turn, independent production companies and studios, are really being overshadowed by the efforts of the Hollywood studios and entertainment conglomerates. For example, look at the lineups at Digital Hollywood and the NewTeeVee Live conferences -- there was a terrible lack of independent content creators sitting on panels alongside people from LucasFilm and Hulu.
