Make sure you have the correct Oracle client version on your Remedy

I don't have the \ at the end of that entry. I added it in and the
server is doing something now. It is taking much longer to start and
normally would have crashed by now. I did notice that the server
cache does not seem to be building up like it usually does. The
arserver.exe process (on Windows) is only using 14 MB of memory. I
will wait and see what happens.

 Listers,

I upgraded our test environment from ARS 7.5 patch 1 to 7.5 patch 2 last
week.  The installer failed when trying to restart the arserver towards the
end of the install.  The only error I can see in the armonitor log file is:

Failure occurred during execl() (ARERR 33)

The install log does not show any errors until it fails to restart the
 server.
I have verified that the armonitor.cfg file looks correct and even restored
a backup copy just to make sure.
Support has been unable to make any progress on this issue.

Re: Error Starting Server After 7.5 patch 2 upgrade

2009-07-28 Thread jham36
That did not seem to work. The Windows Application log started
showing errors about the SQL database not being available. I do not
see these errors when I remove that \

What happens without the \ is that the server cache builds up to
about 477 MB, then crashes. The Windows Application log shows:
Faulting application arserver.exe, version 7.5.0.2, faulting module
arserver.exe, version 7.5.0.2, fault address 0x0015cdf0.

Anyone have any other ideas? This is just a test server, so I can
wipe it out if needed. I was hoping to find a solution in case we
encountered this in production.

We've applied only a partial patch 5 and the problem went away but this is
NOT recommended (and we applied the full patch later).  The bug is in the
arserverd binary so there is no way to fix this without replacing this
 binary.  (anyone remember superzap?)

Here is what they wrote on it.

Our RFE Review Committee has reviewed your request and decided to

Please be advised that this does not imply that it will be implemented

You can use Groups in the assignee field. How are you populating this
information though?
Are you using an ITSM app? If so the assignee needs to be a User.

Try setting that field to $NULL$ before calling the guide. That way

 Hi  All,

I  have been working on this code a long time now...  and from  reading the
technical guide, Remedy can walk a table using AL Guides.

My  objective:  I have a table.  Based upon the rows that  the user
selects, I want to push the row values into a field.  My  understanding is
 that I
can do this by creating workflow that walks a  table.

I  looked at the Technical Guide and some of it is confusing to  me.

Am  I supposed to build separate active links for each one of these  steps?

 Walk  Table Field Call Guide

 Walk  Table Field End Row

 Walk  Table Field Exit Guide

Walk  Table Field Find Next Row

 Walk  Table Field Modify Row

Walk  Table Field Set Current Row

 Walk  Table Field Verify Row

 Scenario:

I  have two entries in Table New

 Purchase  Number

 PO4453.

 PO4523

When  the user selects the two entries within the Table New - I want to
push both of  the numbers into Field  A.

I  built an Active Link that triggers workflow when a button is  pressed -
the AL calls an AL Guide, that performs a table loop, on  TABLE New, and I
have 'Table Loop Selected Rows Only' field checked.   Then this same active
link sets Field A  with the value of the row selected within the Table
New.  The problem  is that the Field A  is being set with ONLY the value
 from
the first entry selected in the table.  It does no read the second item
the user selected.  I read about '!, and  '$  characters.  I will try this
next, but I  want to make sure this is technically possible.  I read in the
technical guide, that work flow can be triggered after the user selects a  row
within the table.  The user can select multiple rows correct?  The AL guide
has a checkbox for it - not sure why it is not working.   Can someone tell
me, what step am I  missing?

Someone  mentioned setting a label, and then a go to label action.  I tried
 this  and nothing happened.

Re: Open Ticket Counts

2009-05-05 Thread jham36
I saw this happen when I was doing some testing and deleted tickets
before I resolved or closed them. Deleteing a ticket does not
decrease the number of open items. When I resolved a ticket the open
ticket count decreased, then I could delete it.
You can change the properties of the open ticket counter so you can
edit it to the proper value manually.

 Hi Laurie,

How did you get on with this?

I too have got the same (or similar) issue. I'd like to implement a slight
variation on auto assignment by capacity and I likewise need the open
tickets count to work as it should. Right now many people have thousands of
tickets supposedly opened though this is definitely not right.

I suspect that the filter HPD:INC:AR_002_ESCALATOR_AutoCloseGotoEnd is the
culprit. It basically skips all the filters when a ticket is auto closed.
The other thing that fails as a result of this filter is that the matching
request is not closed at the same time as an incident. If he incident is
later modified for some other completely unrelated reason then the matching
service request is mysteriously suddenly closed. This would also send a
closure email to the client, perhaps many months after the ticket has been
automatically closed. I'm planning on shifting this skip filter down the
execution order a little so that at least the request is closed and the
count is decremented as it should.

 I have patch 9 of ITSM 7.03 installed on a patch 6 7.1 server.

If you are interested I'm trying to implement assignment via capacity such
that if there is no capacity available, auto assignment is deferred until
capacity is freed. OOTB I assume that it still allocates over and above
capacity if nobody has any left though this might be compromised by the
totally incorrect open ticket counts that we have.

For example, in the Notify Text you could have:
 Status=$Status$

 Summary=$Summary$

So this email would come through and the body would have three lines.
Even if Summary is long it would stay in one field.

Not sure whether or not Including selected fields would do this, but I

 Hi Listers,

I attempting to make my table column headings wrap to two lines.

I followed the following instructions found in the help files, which
 did not work.

To apply a customized style sheet to a web application

In BMC Remedy Administrator, open the window for the application you
 want to work with.
Open the Application Properties window (Application Properties).
 Click the Support Files tab.

Select the Resources Directory Structure directory.
Click the Create Dir button to create a set of directories using the
structure shown in the following figure. This structure mirrors the
structure in the mid tier directory for system resources.
Directory structure for customized style sheets

The standard directory is for stylesheets and other resources that
work across all browsers. The ie and moz directories are for
stylesheets that contain CSS rules specific to each browser and that
should be applied only to that browser.

Keep in mind that a CSS rule property is sometimes applied only by the
browsers that support it, and is safely ignored by all other browsers.
Such properties do not need to be limited to a browser-specific style
sheet, which means that you might be able to reduce the number of
style sheets you need to create.

Select a directory, and click Add Files.
 The Open dialog box appears.

Select your custom CSS file and click Open.
The file is added to the directory selected in step 6.

Click the Rename button to rename this file to arsystem.css if it does
 not already have this name.
 Adding customized .css files

 Save your changes.
Delete your browser’s temporary (cached) files, and refresh your
 browser to see the changes.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You also might turn on the approval server debug log, create the error and
then turn the log off and see if there is any additional information in
there. This can be done from AP:Administration, Settings:

Subject: Approval Emails not going out

 **
 Good afternoon,

We upgraded ARS from 7.0 to 7.1 over the weekend and since then the approval
engine isn't sending out emails.  We have customized the messages in
SYS:Notification Messages, but it was done by updating the SYS:Form Fields
and such without customizing anything but the Filters responsible for doing
 the translation.

The only error message I'm able to detect is in the ARERROR.log file and it
 states:
Mon Apr 13 07:47:46 2009  Approve : Operation cancelled due to error
 (ARAPPNOTE 4502)
 Mon Apr 13 07:47:46 2009     New-Details - CHG:Infrastructure Change -

Mon Apr 13 07:55:54 2009  Approve : Operation cancelled due to error

Mon Apr 13 08:10:05 2009  Approve : Field specified for first approver is not
defined on the form (ARAPPERR 4603)

Any ideas of where to start looking?

Re: Auto-copy Button

I don't know much about it, but I have also followed the example and
implemented the spell check. Doesn't it do a copy and paste as part
of the spell check? I think it copies the text, opens word and the
word spell check, then pastes it in. Maybe you can look at that OLE
and take just a piece of it to solve your issue.

 ** James,
Kind of late for a reply to your message, but for the record...

The same thing happens with the silent install of AR Server on Linux. No
matter what I do, the install goes to the default location. Since the
behavior is the same on different platforms and different installers, I
suspect it is an underlying issue with the InstallAnywhere package that BMC
 is using.

I have also run across all sorts of other problems with the silent install
that has me on the verge of deciding that it is not viable. The latest gem is
LDAP install errors when I don't even select the LDAP features.

This has me really frustrated. The silent install is the only way around the
X-Windows requirement. (What, exactly, is the value of a console install
option if it still requires XWindows?)

I hope you've had better luck than I have,

Re: Flashboard License Clarification

2009-03-26 Thread jham36
My understanding is that only the first 5 flashboards that are created
or exist on the system, will be available to view. If you create a
6th flashboard, you will need to delete one of the first 5 in order to
use the 6th and restart your web server or ARServer as well. I am not
sure what needs to be restarted to reset the counts. I don't think it
has anything to do with how many times a working flashboard has been
viewed.
I think OOTB ITSM 7 has more than 5 flashboards configured.

If you restart your web server then the count resets.

After that, if anyone opens a form with a flashboard on it then as the

When 5 flashboards have been displayed then an attempt to view a 6th will
  give the message you see.

You can control this by restarting the web server then immediately opening
the five flashboards you want users to see.

Re: Upgrade server and migrate data

2009-03-25 Thread jham36
I have used Remedy Migrator to do all my server migrations. It was
not perfect, but got the job done. As for how long it would take
that all depends on how many apps, forms, workflow and all that that
you have as well as how much data.
I always did my migrations over a weekend. I moved the forms and
stuff over the previous week or so and tested. Then cut off access to
the old server to our users by putting it in admin only mode. I cut
over the data and gave myself 2 days to do this. We use a dns alias
for our remedy server, so that helped with the clients connecting to
the new server when it was ready.
Our last server migration was from 6.3 to 7.1 and ITSM 7 (from
HelpDesk 4). This was a big one and took us about 6 months to get
setup. I started moving data ahead of time and then moved only new or
changed data on that final weekend. This may not work for everyone.
We were also able to fully migrate some specialized custom apps ahead
of time and put those into production first.

Server migration is never fun.

Re: DeveloperStudio 7.5: Fields in View equivalent?

2009-03-09 Thread jham36
I clicked Help, then Help Contents and searched for Fields In View
It is a pretty helpful place to find stuff like this. Here is what I
found.

To add and remove fields in a form view

Open a form in BMC Remedy Developer Studio.
Click the form view tab of the appropriate view at the bottom of the
form editor.
Choose Form Add/Remove Fields On View.
In the Add/Remove Fields in View dialog box, select fields in one list
and click the arrow buttons to move them to the other list, or click
the double-arrow buttons to move all the field to one of the lists.
Click OK to close the dialog box.
Choose File Save to save your changes.

To add or remove a field from form views:

Open the appropriate form, and select the field.
In the Properties tab, select the Views value, and then click its
ellipsis button.
In the Views dialog box, all views defined for the form appear in the
Not In Views list and the In Views lists.

Use the Add and Remove buttons to move the views to the appropriate
list.
Click OK.

Re: Licensing Question

2009-02-25 Thread jham36
That all depends on your needs. Fixed and Floating licenses allow
users to submit and modify all entries, barring any other security you
might add. The difference between fixed and floating is that Floating
licenses are shared. If you have 20 users sharing 5 floating
licenses, only 5 users can login with read/write access. A fixed
license is a dedicated license to individual users. Someone with a
fixed license will always be allowed to login with read/write access.
Read licenses allow users to submit and modify only those entries
that they created.
Then there is the Restricted Read license that only allows submit.

Read and Restricted Read licenses are unlimited. You can assign
as many of these as you wish.

links in small chuncks because the problem was probably caused by a
corrupt active link. I was to see if any export took longer than the
others to narrow down the corrup AL. I started doing this and stopped
soon after. That was a ridiculous task.

Turns out that if I turned off Details view in the admin too, the
problem went away. This was shortly confirmed as a bug in the admin
tool and the fix was in QA. I do not think it made it into the last
patch 7.1 patch 6. I just checked the release notes again and it is
not listed. The defect number is listed below. It is listed as
fixed, but there is no mention of what patch it is fixed in.

ISSUE: Delay in saving workflow.

CAUSE: Details View.

RESOLUTION: Created defect #SW00314644

I hope this is helpful.

I am resurrecting this thread in hopes that the issues were resolved
 somehow...

 Environment: (Newly Installed)

ARS 7.1.0 Patch 5 (Email, FB, Assignment, Approval)
 Admin Tool 7.1.0 Patch 4
User Tool 7.1.0 patch 5 ( this seems to be fine)
 Windows Server 2003 SP2 (16 GB RAM)
 Remote Oracle 10 DB

 SLM 7.1 Patch 1
 RKM 7.2 patch 2
 Kinetic Data 4.0.3.4
 Development cache Mode is ON.
Cache all display properties is on.

We are not yet in production with this.  The arserver.exe is using 660,000 KB
 memory.
It takes 15-20 minutes to start up.  (minor issue for now).
Unable to effectively develop.  Admin tool is painfully slow in making even
minor updates...took 10 minutes to save a simple existing field being moved
from one spot to another.  Took 25 minutes to save the HPD:Help Desk form
with 3 new character fields added.

The thread had no resolutions.  How are these issues being handled out
 there???

Re: Selective field modification Status

2009-02-12 Thread jham36
You can do this with a filter. The problem is checking the DB
(database) value for 600 fields against the TR (transaction) values.
I would imagine that there would be a limit on the filter
qualification.
You can probably break it up into multiple filters.
The qualification would look something like this:

'Field1' != 'DB.Field1'
This compares the field value in the current transaction to what is
stored in the database.

You would need to do this for all your G2 fields. It could get kind
of hairy. You would need to check if any of the G2 fields have
changed:
'G2Field1' != 'DB.G2Field1' OR 'G2Field2' != 'DB.G2Field2'   ...
'G2Field600' != 'DB.G2Field600'
This would trigger the message regardless of any G1 fields changing.
You don't even need to check if any of the G1 fields changed or not.

Re: ARS 6.3 and Remedy Helpdesk 5.6- what to do next . . .

2009-01-30 Thread jham36
Moving to the ITSM Suite comes with additional cost and will only be
approved by BMC if you meet certain criteria. Those criteria of
course revolve around money. You will get a partial credit for all
the products you owned prior to July, 2008. Basically you are trading
these in, getting a credit, then buying the suite. Keep in mind that
the ITSM Suite is licensed for ARS 7.1 and above. If you meet the
money criteria and BMC allows you to move to the new pricing model,
there is a change in how support costs are calculated. Under the new
pricing, support is 18% of the NET cost of the products you now own.
But. there needs to be at least a 10% increase in your annual
support costs for BMC to allow you to move to the ITSM Suite and the
new pricing.
It was not a fun transition for us. We went through this with BMC and
a BMC partner for months working out the details.

Good luck to anyone thinking about going down this path. I am glad we
are almost through with it (still working out support cost issues 4
months after we made the purchase).

safer to look at ITSM 7.0.03.009 on ARS 7.1.00.006 which are the current
patch levels.  They have been fixing stuff on ITSM 7 for over two years..
almost three, and ARS 7.1 for over one, and a lot of the bugs are finally
gone.  I can tell you that we have gotten our money's worth out of basic
support ever since embarking on the 7.x project in 2006, and still are.
There are MANY more moving parts in the 7.x world.  As for the conversion
from Help Desk 5.5.1 to Service Desk 7.0.02/3, it hasn't been that difficult
for our IT staff users to make the switch with just a little bit of online
training developed by our helpdesk.  There are more similarities than
differences in the interface - it's the plumbing that's radically different.
It's also a migration, not an upgrade; the move from 7.0 to 7.5 is supposed
to be an upgrade (I'll believe it when I see it work), but there is no such
  thing from 5.x/6.x to 7.x.

You may want to talk to your sales rep about the new suite licensing.  It
moves you to an enterprise model for the servers and apps, and includes many
apps you may never have considered due to the individual unit costs.  Of
course the conversion will cost you, but we are seriously considering it
right now.  Note that it appears that converting does move you to a level
higher in support, whatever that means.  Considering all of the apps
included in the full ITSM suite, that is probably a necessary upgrade.

dinosaur.  I'm running ARS 6.3 on Windows Server 2003 on a remote
Oracle database.  We now have a Remedy Helpdesk application that is on
   version 5.6.

Overall I'm pretty happy with the system except for the support costs.
I have not had to go get any support for the product for almost 18
months though I still pay for it.

And now, the rub.  I have no idea what ARS 7 much less ARS 7.5 looks
like, or what it costs.  I'm pretty sure there is no longer a Helpdesk
   application.
And I am dreading doing an upgrade, and I'm not even sure what we'd
have to pay to make one happen.

Has anyone moved from ARS 6.3 and Helpdesk to the new ARS and some
other Helpdesk-like product?  How did the costs change?  Was it very
   difficult?

I only have basic support through BMC so I'm having trouble getting
the information I need though I will be calling them this afternoon to
find out what my options are.

They certainly did not have a problem selling me support this year . .

In order to approve a change you will need to have a fixed or floating
license. Read licenses only let you submit and modify only the
entries that you have submitted. I do not think that this applies
here.
From the documentation:
Within their assigned permissions, users with Read licenses can search
for
requests and display requests. In addition, administrators can
configure the
AR System server to enable users with Read licenses to do the
following tasks:
 Submit requests
 Modify requests that they submitted
The ability to allow those with Read licenses to submit requests
allows you to
reserve write licenses for users who need to modify requests that they
did not
submit.

Re: Question: Consolidated group notifications

2009-01-08 Thread jham36
You can create a dummy user with the distribution list as it's email
address. Then put this user in the group that you want to notify.
But I guess you also want the other people to be in that group as well
so they can access the record as a member of the assignee group, but
then they would get the email - so this solution would not work.

Another option is to add a backend form that holds the group name and
email address you want to use.
Add a hidden field on the form you are working on so you can pull the
email adress over from the hidden form.
When the group is selected as the assignee, you can do a lookup on the
hidden form and bring over the email address. Then in the
notification filter you would send notifications to that email
address. Just specify that field name in the notify action.
If you are using Remedy ITSM or other OOTB apps, it becomes more
difficult to change something like this without breaking 100 things.
This solution could work for a custom app though.

would it require some type of customization?

 Thanks!

Re: “Save” button automatically set when editing form in Admin t ool

2008-12-04 Thread jham36
The only time I have seen this is if I upgrade my Admin Tool. Each
form that is opened is asking to be saved under the newer admin tool.
Save it once and you should be good. If it asks everytime for the
same form(s), then you seem to have another issue.

 Dear List,

Forgive me for raising an issue that I know has already been discussed.  (I
saw it when I was on vacation and meant to check it out when I got back to
work, but now I can’t find it.  I would be happy if someone could point me to
 the archive discussion .)

Sometimes when you open a form in the Admin tool, the “Save” button is
already hi-lited, and if you close the display or switch to another view, it
asks you if you want to save.  (Not a devastating problem but one of life’s
minor annoyances.)  It seems to affect some forms but not others.

Any idea of why this happens and what we can do about it?

Re: Pricing model changed in July 08?

2008-10-17 Thread jham36
We just got hit with this too. We were planning on spending some
money on Change and Asset. We were then told by a 3rd party vendor
that the pricing model has changed. We could still buy under the old
pricing model, but we would not get any credit for it when we finally
moved to the new pricing. BMC is planning on moving all customers to
the new pricing model in 2 years. Any Remedy purchases you made prior
to some date in July 2008 would get you a credit towards the new
pricing. It is not 100% credit since the pricing model has changed.
The old pricing model was the Green and now it is the Blue.
This really threw a wrench in our plans. We also found out that if
you are getting xx% discount from a vendor, that same discount gets
applied to your credit, so the amout of your credit is reduced. BMC
has a profit margin that they must meet in order to move a customer to
the new pricing model. They really should be notifying all customers
of this change and the fact that any new purchases under the old model
will not count when the eventually do move to the new pricing. It
also seems that nobody has all the information on this. There seems
to be little or no documentation on this other than some internal
presentations to the sales team.
We ended up moving to the new model and spent $40,000 more than we
wanted. With the new support pricing (18% of what you payed and
credit for what support you have already payed for the year), we will
end up getting our money back over 4 years.
The benefit is that you get all the ITSM applications, development
licenses, and a few other items. Where you get into trouble with the
user licenses. Those prices went way up. They have a suite license
now that gives a user access to all itsm applications. You can still
buy the individual user application licenses as well.

I've just had a sales guy tell me that BMC/Remedy came up with a new
pricing model that can be used instead of the existing model (ie. an
 either/or situation).
He states that the entire ITSM Suite of applications can be purchased
for $13,000 but that the User licenses are then more expensive to offset
the loss of revenue. User licenses can then be purchased, as today, one
application at a time, or one super-license covering all applications.
Additionally, annual service contracts can then be calculated on
'actual price paid' rather than on 'current list price'. (again: your
choice as to which model is better for you).
I have not heard of this before, and if this is true, can someone
 a) point me to some documentation on this.
 b) comment on whether this model saved you any money (it seems to me
that only a very low number of User licenses could make this new model
 more affordable).

Re: ITSM 7 Assignment Configuration Issue

2008-10-10 Thread jham36
The Products are available on Incident or Problem as expected and for
the correct company or - Global - as we expected they would. They
show up there fine. I have some configured to be available on
incident, and others on Problem. No problems with that.
This issue is when we go to configure the assignments on the
Assignment Configuration form.
The only products that are available on that form are the ones that
are associated with - Global -
We need to have some of our products restricted to our Operating
Company. Thos products are not available on the Assignment
Configuration form.
Support initially told me that it had to do with the way we imported
the Products using the Data Management Tool. I have tested and proven
that no matter how a Product is entered, it is not available on the
Assignment Configuration form unless it is associated with the -
Global - (default) company.

Modify All User's Application Preferences in ITSM 7

2008-10-07 Thread jham36
Hi Group,

Does anyone know of a way to modify all User's Application Preferences
in ITSM 7?
I want to hide the Vendor and Finance tab from the Incident form. The
check boxes I need to access for all user's is on the Application
Preferences form. I can change my own preferences and also the
default, but when I open the CTM:CFG-ApplicationPreferences form, I
cannot see any entries but my own and the default.
I even tried doing a Clear All before searching.
I updated the deafult entry, but that should only affect new users
that are added to the system and not the existing ones.
Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
James

2008-10-07 Thread jham36
Problem Solved.
I was under the assumption that a user would have an entry here by
default. What happens is that if a user does not make any changes to
their Application Preferences, they do not have an entry on the form
and would use the Default Application Settings. That is why I
searched and only got 2 results back, mine and the default.

Thanks,

However for checking the versions, all you need to do is query the
SHARE:Applications Properties form in the AR System to get the complete
versioning information down to patch level. If that is not enough you could
create a report to report that form.

To get the version of the AR System you can run the arsignal command with
the -version switch to get the version and patch level of the AR System
server.. you can also run the admin tool from the command line to get some
configuration information of the AR Server. Type aradmin /? to get complete
help on how to use the aradmin tool from the command line.

 Hope this helps..

Re: Silent Installation

2008-08-04 Thread jham36
I had some problems in doing this silent install. I needed to have
two answer files. One for an upgrade and one for a new install. I
was able to work with this, but I came across another problem. I
needed two more answer files. One for a new install on a machine that
was going to need a reboot after install and another for an upgrade
that was going to need a reboot after install. That's 4 total answer
files.
There was no way for me to tell which machines would need a reboot
before the install failed. I would get error code 3 missing
information if I used the wrong answer file.
This became too difficult to manage and automate.
We use BMC Conuration Management to do software installs. I created a
custom package and manually added in all the files and registry keys.
I also created a separate install for the Crystal reports viewer that
had a convenient msi file and attached that install to the User Tool
install through policy manager.

I did some searching on the InstallShield site and found the SMS

it is not really needed (We had added it before we decided to have the
install copy the files to the user's local drive).  Also there can be no
spaces between the -f1 and the install script path (the same with the -f2

Also you need to make sure the install is run under a user's login that has
administrator rights on the PC, and then give the user who will be running
Remedy full rights to the Home Directory.

Re: Customized Mid-Tier login page

2008-08-04 Thread jham36
Instead of creating an html file to do the redirect, you can create a
Virtual Directory in IIS and in the properties you can set a redirect
to a url. This way you can use any url you want for your supported
companies. You will just need to create a virtual directory for each
of your clients.
http://yourdomain.com/company1
http://yourdomain.com/company2

I see in the documentation it says the following:

Example 2: Login with customized login page
 http://mid_tier_server/arsys/apps/ar_server/app/login.jsp?
 goto=URLserver=server_name
The user logs in using a login page customized for an application, and then
 goes to
 the specified URL.
Any URL after goto statement must be URL-encoded.

This looks like they still have to go to http://serverarsys instead of
http://server/company/arsys. Do I just need to put an index.html file in
the http://server/company/arsys for each company that does a redirect to

Tyrone, I just tested this out.

The value of a Table Field that has one or more rows is 1 or more,
depending on which row you have selected. If there are rows, but you have
none selected, then the value is still 0. You can ctrl-click on a selected
row to make it un-selected, so a user could potentially un-select all rows
in a table, even if one was already selected, which would cause a 0 to
return. So, make sure that you have the property on the table field set to
automatically select the first row choice when the table is loaded.

The value of a Table Field that has not yet been refreshed is $NULL$ or
one of the two the first time you open the form. If you change the window
mode and then change it back, for instance, from search to create, then the
value of the un-refreshed table field is 0.

The value of a Table Field that has been refreshed, but has no rows, is 0.

Basically, make sure you are refreshing the table with WF, and have the
property checked that says select initial row, then you just check to see
if Table Field = 1, if it does, then the table field has at least 1 row.
If it returns 0 or $NULL$ or , then it is empty (you can count on 0
meaning empty since you have automatically select first row selection).

I think this would be the easiest thing to look at.

Off the top of my head, I think that you do a direct sql that would return
the same results that the table would and then do a set field command
   using

Re: active links not recaching

2008-05-28 Thread jham36
You could have also gone into your user tool's windows home directory
and deleted the arf and arv files for the form you are working on. It
wouldn't hurt to delete them all to make sure. Most are within
folders resembling the form name.

 MS SQL Server 2k5

 Windows Server 2k3

 ARSystem 7.1

 Client 7.1

 Admin 7.1

 Java 1.6

 Tomcat 5.5.23

I made a change to an active link today, tested it, and it failed the test. I
went back and verified everything was good, but what I changed (a new set
fields) wasn't getting picked up by my client. I did the regular, log
out/back in with my client tool, still it didn't work. I rebooted my PC,
still no luck. Added a Message that said HI that ran in the same active link,
but on a sooner action, and the message didn't pop up.

Then I cycled arserver, tried again, still not working. So I cycled SQL
server, still no luck. I rebooted the server, still my changes were not being
picked up. Then I went in and disabled the active link, and tested, the other
actions were still firing, even though the AL was disabled. I went back to
the object (button on a vertical navigation bar) that was firing the AL to
verify that it had no other ALs that it fired, and it didn't, just the one.
So I went in and removed the message, changed the AL to fire on an EO of 5,
created a new AL that said Hi as the message, retested, nothing, it was still
doing what it did this morning before I had made any changes.

Logged out of/back in to remedy on my client tool, still no luck.

I did notice in the event viewer under Applications logs, that whenever I
rebooted my server, I received the following four errors:

 MSSQLSERVER:

10:29:23                  Could not find database ID 2, name 'tempdb'. The
database may be offline. Wait a few minutes and try again.

10:29:23                 Could not find database ID 2, name 'tempdb'. The
database may be offline. Wait a few minutes and try again.

 AR System Monitor:

10:29:22                 390600 : Failure during SQL operation to the
 database (ARERR 552)

10:29:22                  Cannot open database ARSystem requested by the
login. The login failed. (SQL Server 4060)

It picked up the changes I did this morning to my form, I added a few display
only fields to a view form, however, since then, no active link changes are
being picked up by the server, even after cycling the server.

Does anyone have any idea of where I should look?

Re: Table = $NULL$

2008-05-21 Thread jham36
Include the request ID field in your table.
Run IF col1 = $NULL$

where col1 is the Request ID field in the table. It may be col2 or 3
or a custom name. I usually rename my table columns to something
like colRQSTID.
Then my Run If statement would be colRQSTID = $NULL$

Re: Custom css

2008-05-06 Thread jham36
I found out how to add a custom css without messing up my menu bar. I
created an ARSystem.css file that included only the classes that I
want changed. I added this to my Support Files for my application.
I was able to modify the td.BaseTableCell,td.BaseTableCellOdd classes
to get it to show left or right borders for a cell.
I was hoping to do this using a table property so that the column
dividers would span the complete hight of the table.
Visually this is my desired result. I have table calculations that
appear below the table and for each column. It would be easier to see
which column totals are for which columns if the column divider
spanned the hight of the column, even if there is only one or two rows
of data with the table is able to display 20 or so rows.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
James

This assumes you have the ability to customize/change the class argument in

The only results I have seen are the Remedy menu bar showing two rows

This is not critical, but would make my app look better with column

Re: BMC Support RFE Document

2008-04-23 Thread jham36
I had a support tech submit an RFE for me a couple of weeks ago.
There was no paperwork to fill out on my end.

On Apr 22, 10:48 pm, John Sundberg [EMAIL PROTECTED]
wrote:
 CMDB (Carey Matthew de Black),
Kinetic would be more than willing to host a nice RFE submittal process.

I saw the URLs for the circa v4 system - but I had trouble logging into Dev

However - Kinetic Request could certainly be put together to handle
collection -- and details of RFEs. It could ask relevant questions for each
area of BMC ARS and related apps. In addition we could provide transparency
to the status of the RFE. With the ability to run it through an approval or
voting process of some sort. (Kinda some fun stuff with Kinetic Request)

The nice thing about asking the right questions is that the people who
receive the RFE would have information that they could use to understand
the RFE yet the form would not be killer for the person to submit the RFE.
(Good data really is the point of the 4 page form - unfortunately it is a
 static doc etc.)

If people really want this - I can make it happen (my side) -- I am not so
sure BMC is willing to pay attention to the RFEs especially RFEs collected
 by somebody other than themselves.

Also - I do agree it would be nice if BMC would use their own product for
more of this kind of stuff. The very fact that they would use it for this
type of thing would constantly keep it fresh (and known) that Remedy can do
stuff other than Incident handling. Also - I think if BMC would use it for
more than ITSM -- then they would have some real requests for enhancements
 from internal developers.

Also - I could donate a copy to Dan Bloom and have him run it on his server.
I like this option -- as I can also give him unlimited admin users for
Kinetic -- and anybody on the list who wants to maintain the RFE processes
could get in and use Kinetic (hopefully love it).

Again - if people want it -- I can put some effort towards it.

Does anybody else want to host it -- I can donate a copy?

Has anyone used custom css on the web?  I am trying to modify the display of
a table field in an application.  I took the system default ARSystem.css
from the mid-tier server and modified that and added it to the Support Files
 for my application under standard/stylesheets

The Remedy documentation for what needs to be changed it a little blurry.  I
want to be able to view column or cell borders for the data in the table (or
the whole table).  The border shows for selected rows by default.
I tried to add a border entry in these classes:
 td.BaseTableCell,td.BaseTableCellOdd
 also tried:
div.BaseTableBar div  (the documentaion points to this, but there is already
a left border that does not appear to be showing)

The only results I have seen are the Remedy menu bar showing two rows with
 the second row cut off.

This is not critical, but would make my app look better with column totals
 listed under the table.

 Thanks,
 James

Re: Windows Server issue?

2008-04-22 Thread jham36
The only issue I have seen where no pages are being displayed, not
even the config page, was due to the jakarta (sp?) web plugin. I
uninstalled Mid-Tier, TomCat and the Jakarts ASPI plugin from Add/
Remove programs. I then went into the IIS control panel and manually
removed the entry for the Jakarta Web Services plugin. Right click,
Remove (or Delete). Then reinstalled mid-tier and tomcat.

Server has 12 gb; mid-tier tomcat is set to 1536 - the 32-bit tomcat will not
run at all if you set it to 2048.  Kinetic tomcat is default settings, I
believe. When I look at processes mid-tier tomcat is using 718,640 peak and
Kinetic tomcat is using 212,596 peak, and they are fluctuating since they are
being used.  I don't recall seeing the mid-tier tomcat use much more that
7##,### even when I am running a full persistent prefetch.

 Christopher,

How much memory do you have on the server to allow yourself to set initial
 and max to 1536?

We have been wrestling with tomcat crashing some point after tomcat5.exe
 reaches the max.

I found a working setup for R2 x64 last year, where I installed tomcat with
mid-tier 7.1 and then set the service to run under a domain account that was
added to the local power users group.   I was already doing this on my non-R2
development mid-tier server, so maybe I just lucked out when I replicated the
setup on the R2 production server. You would need to add that account to the
tomcat-users.xml file with a role of manager, too. Permissions to run
services appear to be tighter in R2, although the tomcat instance installed
in the Kinetic Apps directory - 5.5.20 - which all the Kinetic applications
are using, has never had any problem running under the LOCAL SYSTEM account's
 default permissions.

I  also had problems with mid-tier 7.1.x installing tomcat in \Program
Files\ instead of the correct location \Program Files (x86)\ but you won't
see that unless you are on x64 - it is not an R2-specific problem, I don't
think.  That still is not fixed in 7.1.00.002, which still installs tomcat
5.5.17 but frequently refuses to run with it. BMC Support had me manually
install tomcat 5.5.26, which solved both the incorrect path for installation
and whatever was going wrong with the patch 2 mid-tier.  I still run the
service under the domain user account with local power user permissions, and
open the ports in the firewall (8080 and 8443).  With 7.1.00.002 you have to
be on java 1.5.0 - I installed 1.5.0_14 - and give it a nice chunk of memory
if you will be using the persistent cache (an absolute necessity with ITSM
7).  I have it set to 1536 initial and max and thread stack size 3000.

Re: Tool to convert a def file?

2008-04-21 Thread jham36
You can try Remedy Developer Plus. If you have a valid support
contract you can download it from the patch site. They do not have a
7.x version, but I do know that the 6 version that is posted there
will run against a 6.3 server. It can analyze and document selected
workflow into a readable format. You can export to pdf or html.

I'm trying to analyze a def file of some workflow before I import it... but
 maybe that's not possible.

 Thanks!!

** It would help if you would share what it is you're actually trying to
achieve... actually the DEF files are pretty human-readable in my opinion. It
only depends on what it is you actually try to read from it
If you would like to use it to search for wording in error messages -- that
can be easily done by searching on text strings
If you would like to search for form layout -- no go!

A tool like ARInside can help you a lot if you for instance would like to
know what fields need to be changed if you decide to enlarge the Summary
field on HPD:Help Desk... or actually with a lot of other questions as well.

Is there a tool that will convert a def file into a format that's readable?
 Or somewhat understandable?
