Thanks aprone, though I have a nasty feeling trans atlantic phone calls to
bavisoft could be rather expensive.

You might send the number to thomas ward if he'd considder phoning them in
his capacity as audeasy co list owner, and as a developer himself.

I have actually phoned those audio games developers in the Uk, I phoned
azabat software to get their demo cd so that I could write game reviews, and

phoned Gamevial just for general discussion of their web based games.

My next targit, is to see if i can eerbash some sense into the rnib and
convince them that there is more to audio games than azabat and their
talking crosswords and board games (which I rather think are somewhat
overpriced), and not all visually impared people are over the age of sixty.

Given that the rnib are intrinsically stupid and my 20 year long war to get
them to record a wider variety of books has not seen too much success, this
is probably a doomed enterprise, but I can at least try.

Oh and yes, I did first phone the rnib with a book request at the age of 7
for Douglas Hill's novel the caves of Klydor a sequal to exiles of colsec
which they'd recorded in 1979 (three years before I was born and ten years
before I phoned them).

they did finally! record the book in 2009. It'll be interesting to see if it

takes them another 20 years to do the last in the trilogy.

I figure I'm probably a long way off from being skilled enough to do that.
Problem is I haven't had time to pick BGT back up again lately what with
getting married and everything associated with it. THen we'll be moving into
a bigger apartment in a few days. So I don't even know when I'll have the
time to get back into it. It's still on my to-do list though.

You might look into BGT, BLastbay Game Toolkit in case you don't know.
It's

only in Beta stages right now but it's shaping up to be a powerful
development utility. The language may seem complicated at first (and I've
in

no way begun to master it), but once you've read te tutorial through
thoroughly a few times and started playing with it it's actually a lot of
fun. It basically takes the down and dirty nitty gritty stuff and does
that

part for you. Basically what you have to do is tell it what you want to do
and how you want to do it. Philip Bennefall has been working on this for
the

better part of a year. The utility will cst something even to develop free
games, unless of course you planned on making those particular titles open
source, but the prices are reasonable in my book. I own the light version,
which allows for the development of as many free itles as you wish. Then
you

have the Single License version which will cost about a hundred bucks.
That

allows you to develop one comercial title, though if it's a good one it'll
more than cover the 400 dollars cost of the Unlimited version, which of
course allows you to develop as many free or commercial games as your
heart

desires. If you're at all interested you can check out www.blastbay.com to
download it and start playing with it. Just don't do what I tried to do
and

jump right in and start trying to develop a game right off the bat LOL.

To receive no response from the company except when you suggest that
they make their games abandonware is a pretty sorry state indeed. I
did locate an E-mail address when I clicked on the Paypal link, but I
wouldn't want to buy the games without knowing the address was a valid
one. For kicks and giggles, I'll write to it and see if I get a
bounce or response, but I won't keep my hopes up. Apparently, at the
UK site that was recommended, the games are 30 pounds apiece. I'm in
the US and don't know the conversion rate, but from what everyone has
been saying, I'd be better off using that money to take a
correspondence course on programming so I could try developing my own
games, lol. Learning how to do something like that has been on my
to-do list. Does anyone know where I can go to get started? Might be
a project I undertake next year!

Hi Muhammed,

Dark just posted the message a little while ago. You can't honestly
expect Bavisoft to respond that fast. I get loads of e-mails both
private and public and some times it takes me a day or two to actually
get to some of my messages. Therefore I wouldn't expect anything more

post and respond.

Hi I don't know what's up with them, they just seemed to have taken the
lazy road and vannished completely with no reason for doing so. I don't
know where you're based, but I thought rather than go through a possibley
dodgey site I'd order the games from here.

www.computerroomservices.co.uk If that link isn't right just google
computer room services uk. The guy there is also totally blind and helped
me out with buying the Bavisoft games. Both games are good if a little
lacking in places and repeating of puzzles gets a bit tedious, but sound
quality and voice acting are both really good.

Hello Everyone,
I was listening to some reviews that Kelly Sapergia did of Grizly
Gulch and Chillingham, the two games put out by Bavisoft. I was
interested in purchasing them, so I navigated to their website.
Credit card processing seems to be down, but the Paypal link still
seems to work. I know the games are quite old (Windows 98, anyone?),
so I thought I'd write to the salespeople there but my E-mail to the
address given bounced. I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they are
still up and running, and if so, are these games still available for
purchase? Thanks!

Hi Tiffany,

Have you tried my game Mysteries of the Ancients? It is in beta
testing right now, but it is a mixture of puzzle elements, treasure
hunting, as well as the ocational mythical monster or two to kill. You
can find it at

Cheers!

Hi Muhammed,

Dark just posted the message a little while ago. You can't honestly
expect Bavisoft to respond that fast. I get loads of e-mails both
private and public and some times it takes me a day or two to actually
get to some of my messages. Therefore I wouldn't expect anything more

post and respond.

Hi Charles,

You got that right. As a game developer I respect other game
developer's and their companies right to market their products as they
wish. I do not have to respect what Bavisoft is doing to their
customers though. Therefore as a game developer I wouldn't pirate
their software, but would certainly send them a piece of my mind.

Hi,

Ooh...That gives me an extremely wicked thought. Let me just say I
know a way that would seriously light a fire under their collective
butts and might knock a little sense into Bavisoft.

Just for kicks what if someone got on the audiogames.net forums and
said if Bavisoft doesn't begin answering their e-mail, correct
shipping order problems, etc person x is going to simply upload their
games somewhere and give them away for free. Yeah, I know, it is
pretty low, but I'm sure they would be climbing out of their
collective holes to sscream for people not to do that too them. The
obvious reply would be for them to A, be able to be contacted via
their support addresses, and B, that they disclose any and all
projects they are working on immediately. Otherwise we don't believe
you and Bavisoft doesn't exist. Now, wouldn't that burn their butts.
Lol!

I'm not suggesting that anyone actually do this, but wouldn't it be
funny? Could you imagine them getting bent out of shape because a
number of their customers just revolted and plastered Bavisoft's games
over the internet, because Bavisoft never answeres their e-mail etc?

Cheers!

As I said in that message though, please don't reply to the topic

Well, I wouldn't allow that in the BPC discussion list either. I'm just
imagining their reaction. Please, don't do it, we will start to develop
again! But I have developed a hunch like forensic scientists do, and my
suspicion is that the reason that they are not developing is because they
got flamed on Damions list. And BTW when was this? 6 years ago? Why 6
years?

Hi Dark,

Yeah, I know. Being a moderator myself I couldn't do anything like
that myself, nor allow anyone to do it here on Audyssey either. I was
just thinking it would be funny if someone did actually give them an
ultimatom of get with the program or just abandon the games
altogether. None of this we are working on something, but won't tell
you what it is, or we don't read or e-mail because of spam crap. There
comes a time when a company like that is just asking for someone to
pirate them out of existance or something. HOwever, straight people
like you and I will try to honor them even if they don't really
deserve it just on principle.

firstly, I don't want to get audiogames.net into any sort of legal

Secondly, as a moderator I must considder that we have a fairly strict
policy about piracy. While rules have occasionally been bent for people
posting links to old or abandoned games such as code factory's, (though
this

is kept on a strictly unofficial basis and out of the database or news),
this would be directly placing free copies of at least nominally
available

games, which we really can't condone.

Afterall, that potentially opens the way for some scumbag to then turn up
and say "Well, company x hasn't released games for a while, so here are
cracked versions"

Finally, suppose Bavisoft then said "oh fine! you ungreatful bunch, the

methinks I'd feel a trifle guilty.

Btw, anyone tries this on the forum, and I'll have to delete the topic.

We'll probably get into big trouble. But honestly, just disappearing in a
flash of torchlight is not on. Ok, lets say Jason doesn't post to the
entombed list that mutch, but he still keeps us informed, doesn't he? But
someone has to do it not on the audio games forom, just private emails.
Don't know if their inbox is bambaseled because of so mutch emails. Lol. But

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

2010-12-16 Thread Bryan Peterson
You might look into BGT, BLastbay Game Toolkit in case you don't know. It's
only in Beta stages right now but it's shaping up to be a powerful
development utility. The language may seem complicated at first (and I've in
no way begun to master it), but once you've read te tutorial through
thoroughly a few times and started playing with it it's actually a lot of
fun. It basically takes the down and dirty nitty gritty stuff and does that
part for you. Basically what you have to do is tell it what you want to do
and how you want to do it. Philip Bennefall has been working on this for the
better part of a year. The utility will cst something even to develop free
games, unless of course you planned on making those particular titles open
source, but the prices are reasonable in my book. I own the light version,
which allows for the development of as many free itles as you wish. Then you
have the Single License version which will cost about a hundred bucks. That
allows you to develop one comercial title, though if it's a good one it'll
more than cover the 400 dollars cost of the Unlimited version, which of
course allows you to develop as many free or commercial games as your heart
desires. If you're at all interested you can check out www.blastbay.com to
download it and start playing with it. Just don't do what I tried to do and
jump right in and start trying to develop a game right off the bat LOL.

Hi Lori,

Smile. Sorry, I can't really do that. Being both a game developer
myself and a moderator of a respected gaming list it wouldn't be a
good president to begin making threats like that to a fellow game
developer even if they deserve such a fate. I merely was thinking of a
"what if" type situation. I wasn't at all serious about doing
something like that personally. Although, it is tempting seeing as I'm
sick of their lack of response and general disregard for their
customers.

Cheers!

Hi Tiffany,

Have you tried my game Mysteries of the Ancients? It is in beta
testing right now, but it is a mixture of puzzle elements, treasure
hunting, as well as the ocational mythical monster or two to kill. You
can find it at
http://www.usagamesinteractive.com/mota.php

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

2010-12-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tiffany,

Well, if you are serious about writing your own games there are
definitely a couple of routes you can take.

If you don't mind purchasing an accessible game engine like BGT Philip
Bennefall has been developing a general purpose game engine for the VI
community called BGT. The nice thing about BGT is that he has used an
off the shelf scripting language such as Angelscript and wrapped it
around a C++ engine that supports Microsoft Sapi, DirectX, etc
allowing you to focus on programming your games without worrying about
all the really low-level programming like handling things like audio,
input, and TTS support from scratch. For a totally new programmer BGT
is the best way to go if you are looking at any sort of introduction
to programming accessible games.

However, if you are interested in a general purpose programming
language like C++, Python, or Java and don't mind learning the nuts
and bolts of programming games from scratch there is an online
programming service I use
http://safari.oreilly.com
that is a commercial programming resource with hundreds of e-books on
anything and everything under the sun. If you pay for a subscription
for the Safari service you can litterally go from a self-taught
beginner to advanced programmer in a fairly short amount of time, and
unlike a classroom environment you can go at your own pace.

Cheers!

2010-12-16 Thread Tiffany J . Kim
It certainly seems like they have. From the Googling I have
done, it appears that games ordered from them take months to
arrive if they don't get lost in the post. Considering that
their E-mail address for sales inquiries is bouncing, I'll give
Computer Room Services UK a holler. If it turns out I can't run
the games on my machine, I'll just abandon the idea of purchasing
those games and think about other options. Maybe Sarah and the
Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry in lieu of Chillingham and one
of the wild west pinball tables from Draconis instead of Grizzly
Gulch.

I did post a copy to the list, but just in case you want to read the

As I said in that message though, please don't reply to the topic directly,

Hi Dark,

Not only that, but you might want to point out or add that adding some
sort of download service would greatly improve their order system. For
example, on USA Games we have a php script that routes you to Paypal
for checkout and ordering, and when done it brings up a secured
download page to download the title that expires after 7 days. They
could do the same, and with most people on cable or DSL these days
there is really no need for shipping physical media to a customer.
That would go a long ways to resolving their problem with orders
getting lost in the mail, and is automated for the most part.

Cheers!

Hi Tom.

I did think this was the case, however the difference betwene code factory
and bavisoft is that bavisoft have flat out said "don't pirate our games"
where as code factory haven't (if they do I'll personally delete any such
topic discussing the matter from audiogames.net).

However, they are literally impossible to contact, heck, I tried to contact
them back in 2006 and couldn't get a word, so there's nothing siad.

This is why I've allowed it, and if indeed I am wrong I'd be glad to rectify
the situation.

Stil, I do accept that this is at the discression of the moderator or list
owner.

Btw, as regards montizumas return, I stil wish you could simply change the
name slightly and release it as a free project if nothing else.

i will absolutely admit i stil have the game, and while (sinse I understand
the legal shenanigans), I won't be redistributing it, neither do I have any
intention of deleting it, indeed I've played it on several occasions. I do
however feel rather sad that nobody else will get the chance to, sinse,
while it's undoubtedly not up to the standard of current Mota, it is stil a
fun game in it's own right.

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

2010-12-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, good point. In both cases we know that the companies are still
in business. With BSC we know that Justin is busy with work and family
so BSC Games has been sidelined, but not forgotten. While we don't
know exactly what Draconis is doing i do know that they are developing
a cross-platform engine, the same as I am, in order to port their
titles to Mac OS. As I know this is going to be an extremely long and
difficult process I'm not surprised we haven't heard much out of Josh.
However, we do know Draconis still does exist, fulfills orders, and so
on. However, someone less aware of their activities might assume their
stuff is abandoned and do something foolish like pass their games
around assuming they are abandoned or something. So you are right
automatically assuming something is abandoned even if it is a company
like Bavisoft is a poor president to set.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

Hi Yohandy,

That was exactly my point. I basically wasn't suggesting that someone
actually upload and share the games for real. Only that someone jurk
their chain a little and convince them that we are going to go through
with it to bring them to the bargoning table and open a dialog with
their customers. Some of us, such as myself, wouldn't actually upload
and share their games on principle. However, I might be willing to
convince them I would do so if it would get their attention long
enough to give them a piece of my mind, and to tell them to shape up
or go out of business.

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

2010-12-16 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

As far as the piracy rules of the Audyssey list goes we require
written permission from the developer/author in order to redistribute
games freely. As Dan, Philip Bennefall, and a few developers have
publically given permission to redistribute games like Super Deecout,
Tarzan Junior, etc we freely do so. With Code Factory they haven't
outright said you can't give their games away for free, nor have they
given anyone outright permission to do so either. For that reason I
haven't put any of their games on my website or allowed anyone to post
download links to Audyssey. It is a fine line between piracy and
simply redistributing supposed abandonware, and Raul and I would like
that definition to be a little more clear cut by the developers.

For example, let's take Montezuma's Revenge. That's a game that is
clearly abandonware, and I certainly created it. I have very clear cut
and specific reasons for not wanting the game to be redistributed. I
made a legal agreement not to redistribute/continue that game and am
probably legally bound by that agreement. Now, if someone starts
passing it around I could end up in trouble for it even though I
wasn't the one who initiated the distribution. For that reason I have
a firm no redistribution polacy with that game.

In other developers' cases, Code Factory, even though they currently
have no support for their games doesn't mean that a year from now they
will release new versions of said games. In which case we would have
given away a number of their games for free, pirated them, even though
they themselves had something in the works regarding those titles.
Therefore it is a good safeguard, even if it is nothing more than a
formality, to get the developer's permission before redistributing
software freely. We really don't know that Code Factory, Bavisoft, etc
really has nothing planned in the future. All we know is the appear to
be abandoned at the moment.

Cheers!

Oh I've been tempted to do that. Then again not many people would be able

Cheers!

Well as I said yohandi, code factory is a case of bending rather than
breaking rules.

Sinse the games are impossible to get hold of anymore, and code factory does
nothing to support them, some people on audiogames.net have been trying to
distribute the games.

I'm not prepared to stick this on the database or news, but sinse code
factory haven't (unlike bavisoft), told us we absolutely can't, there's sort
of a grey area here, so while we are usually dead against piracy on
audiogames.net, I've allowed people to keep posting links (indeed I don't
say that I might not have downloaded copies myself

I am not sure of what Tom's thoughts are relating to audeasy and this
matter, so won't post any links here.

I agree, as I said, i will considder a way of writing bavisoft a more polite
version of a similar principle.

for instance, I may point out to them that it is unreasonable of them to
expect people not to put there games up for download online when in fact
those games cannot be obtained legitimately given bavisoft's horrible record
of processing orders, and that their lack of ability to be contacted over
this makes that situation far worse.

I will have a think and see how best to word such a message.

Very true. As I just said, I'm entertaining the thought, but am not going

if someone was to actually do it, it wouldn't be a good precedent to set.
But that doesn't change the fact that trying to order directly through

Cheers!

Hi,
Nope--they're MP3s, all of them. Those that aren't (did I say all of them?
) are in ogg or wma format.

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

2010-12-15 Thread dark

unfortunately clemment,

while to you and I and many people not updating your site and having
bouncing e-mails is sufficient grounds to say someone is no longer a
company, legally that's not how things work. If bavisoft are stil registered
as a company, --- which, by the fact their website is stil up, some orders
at least are filled, and they do to some degree stil communicate even if not
actuallying saying anything useful, they could quite successfully take
someone to court for simply claiming they weren't one. It'd be akin to
someone saying "Welll, that car was just left on the corner of the street
for two weeks, obviously nobody was owning it so I took it"

As regards piracy, I was actually thinking of Draconis. There games are the
easiest to crack and redistribute, and they in fact haven't released
anything new for some considderable time.

in fact I believe their last update was in 2008 which was a vista
compatibility fix to many of there games.

the same could be said of bsc, even if their games are slightly harder to
crack.

there is! evidence (which is to say there isn't), that they haven't done any
updating of there site sinse the vista patches, which is I think all the amo
some people would need.

Pluss, i wouldn't personally like to see a situation where any tom dick or
harry could legitimately pirate any game they wished if they happen to feel
that the company hadn't communicated or updated, that would not be
good, (developers would be in terror of their mail servers crashing).

Ultimately, it'd be a nasty precedent to set and probably end up doing more
harm than good in the end.

Beware the Grue!

To be honest, I wouldn't be all too ashamed if I did do it... and if
they said Chillingham 2 was going to be released in 2004, development
shouldn't hault for 5 years. 6, I guess actually.. not even
mainstream games do that. And there's a counterargument to having
someone uploading pirated stuff from developers who haven't released
recently. IF a person does you wait and say unless you have proof,
kep the cracks away. But when your emails are bouncing, your site

Cheers!

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they are
still up and running, and if so, are these games still available for
purchase? Thanks!

Hi Thoams,
Lol...we mustn't be too nasty to the good people of Bavisoft! But seriously,
that's almost a good idea; we'd see if they're just hiding or if they're
really gone, in which case...upload away!

Best Regards,

Cheers!

Ooopse! memo to self, even when in hurry write message correctly, ;D.

I will say though a 160 gb audio game would be fantastic! and assuming that
most of that would be audio, that would mean about 2500 hours, which would
probably amount to enough gameplay for about four years! ;D.

I actually wonder if you collected together all the audio games that are
listed on audiogames.net and the pcs games list and installed them all into
one directory if you'd even come to 16 gb, let alone 160!

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they are
still up and running, and if so, are these games still available for
purchase? Thanks!

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

2010-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Tiffany,

To be honest I really wouldn't bother attempting to order from
Bavisoft. They claim that they are still in business, but they have
the absolutely worst reputation possible when it comes to processing
orders and answering their e-mail. You might place an order and never
recieve it, or you will get it after a long time has passed. They
rarely if ever answer their e-mail, and although they claim they are
working on something they haven't made an official release in
something like six years. If the company isn't gone it might as well
be given the fact they do nothing to promote and support the products
they do have.

Cheers!

their games should be made abandonware, at which point they will pop up on
the ag.net forum and say "no, please buy our games, we are working on
something but don't want to release any details", though sinse they've
been saying the same thing for the last five years now people are rather
scheptical at the least, especially with their mail address not
functioning.

Really their conduct as a company has been quite shoddy, which is a shame
sinse the games, though symplistic in parts do have some good voice
acting and interesting ideas, and with a bit of modernization could be a
good basis for future titles.

I'm wondering if anyone knows whether they are
still up and running, and if so, are these games still available for
purchase? Thanks!

Re: [Audyssey] Is Bavisoft Still Around?

2010-12-15 Thread dark

Basically, bavisoft have vanished so completely it's almost unbelieveable.

Their last game release was 2004, and nobody has heard a thing sinse,
E-mails to them bounce, and though they have occasionally surfaced on the
audiogames.net forum they've rarely if ever said anything of consequence.

thier games have recived no updates to work with windows vista, and worst of
all, some orders have gone missing. Why in fact they continue to sell games
which are only 160 gb in size (sarah is almost as big), only on cd in these
days of very high speed net connections I have no idea at all.

It certainlly does seem dodgey I admit, but if you're stuck for a game and
are new to audiogames then they might be a good place to start.

I would base whether I buy any company's games on the responses I get from
the company. No response? No sale.

Hi I don't know what's up with them, they just seemed to have taken the lazy
road and vannished completely with no reason for doing so. I don't know
where you're based, but I thought rather than go through a possibley dodgey
site I'd order the games from here.

www.computerroomservices.co.uk If that link isn't right just google
computer room services uk. The guy there is also totally blind and helped
me out with buying the Bavisoft games. Both games are good if a little
lacking in places and repeating of puzzles gets a bit tedious, but sound
quality and voice acting are both really good.
