Default language: Portuguese
Language package: \usepackage{ae,aecompl}
Command start: \selectlanguage{portuguese}
Command end: (empty)
(all chackbox are checked)
Does it match with yours? Is it correct? The
'Command end' is really empty at both Windows and
Linux OS?

Did you check the latex log? Is the portuguese babel files loaded?

I followed the instructions exactly as specified in the accompanying readme.txt (my HOME is my cygwin home dir so I copied all the files to under my .lyx directory there, I defined TEXINPUTS to point to the packages dir, and I ran Reconfigure). I still don't see any algorithm style available. The readme.txt mentioned that I could find out where the user directory is located by looking under Help Version, but I see no such menu option (Help About LyX doesn't specify this). I'm using LyX 1.3.6 and MikTeX. Please help!! Thanks in advance.

Could someone give me a basic example of changing the font used for the chapter headings? The first thing to understand is that there are two completely separate renderings in LyX. There's the rendering you get in the LyX window, and the rendering you get when you export to TeX. The former is controlled by the layout files. For each environment, you set the fonts, sizes, etc, and that sets how it's displayed in LyX. The look when it's renderd by LaTeX is controlled by the .sty and .cls files. In your case, you need to look into the book.cls file. You'll want to copy it into a private part of the search path and change the name so you don't screw up other documents that want to use the original book class. Ditto for the layout file. You'll want to edit those to change the names as appopriate. It's only the output I'm worried about - it doesn't matter how it looks in LyX. I want to announce that the main problem was at
the 'Language package' place. It was
'\usepackage{ae,aecompl}'and I changed to
'\usepackage{babel}, as the advice by Carlos Knauer.
The {ae,aecompl} is used to put Type1 at PDF
instead of Type3 fonts (bad to screen), so it can be
used at 'preamble' at the same way! :-)

copy and paste between lyx documents does not work
I'm using Linux and if I open two LyX documents, I can't copy and paste between the two windows. I can select text in other windows and paste it by a mouseclick in a LyX window. Why can't I copy/paste between the LyX windows? Gunnar.

I'm using LyX 1.3.6 for Windows. When I do File Export ..., I don't see any output files. Where are they? Thanks in advance.

If you open both documents in the same LyX instance, you can copy everything with C-c and C-v. I can select text in other windows and paste it by a mouseclick in a LyX window. The point being that authors should concentrate on content and logical markup, and typesetters/publishers should worry about how the final thing looks? Kind of (but not exactly) like the separation between HTML and CSS? I'm wearing my typesetting hat at the moment, so does that mean that Lyx isn't really suitable for me - it's more designed for content creators? I've been looking at the memoir class and pure LaTeX and managed to do some tweaks to the output. I'm doing a collection of short stories so chapters is a bit of a misnomer, and each one has a different author which makes things a bit complicated. But I think I'm getting there. Thanks for the other info about layout files etc. I don't really mind how it looks in LyX itself, so it seems like the book.cls file is the one to check out. Seems like a steep learning curve, so thanks for getting me started! Paul.

I've never changed anything under Preferences since installing LyX, and I have all the support software the installer demanded. LyX will look for .layout files in the ${LYX_USER_SUPPORT}/layouts
directory where
LYX_USER_SUPPORT=$HOME/.lyx
on *nix and, I guess, Cygwin and
LYX_USER_SUPPORT=C:/Documents and Settings/USER/Application
Data/LyX
on Windows.
So, question 1: you're using the Cygwin executable, right?
If you install the LyX layout file correctly, you should be able to
find the thing in the Layouts-Document menu. If the LaTeX class is
not installed correctly, then the class will be marked as
unavailable, meaning you can edit your .lyx document but you won't
be able to generate a .dvi file, etc.

I'm new to Lyx and I was wondering whether there was a way to set the styles globally across an entire document. e.g. Title: 22pt Helvetica Paragraph: 12pt Georgia At the moment I can only see how to set this information inline, e.g. each paragraph. Am I missing something? Thanks J.

Set the 'Edit- Preferences- Paths- Working directory' to some place with no spaces (e.g. C:\MyLyx); Please save the lyx file inside the path mentioned above -- with no spaces (e.g. C:\MyLyx\myfile.lyx), then try to make the 'File- Export- PDF(pdflatex) and check if the PDF file is at the same folder (C:\MyLyx\myfile.pdf) and give me a callback :) -- Abraços! If you're trying to export a PDF file, check the LaTeX log (View-LaTeX Logfile) after doing File-Export-... and see if there is an error message. If one of the applications used in the export fails, there is no output file (and no visible warning in LyX). 3. Does File-Export-LaTeX work? It should produce a file with the document's name and a .tex extension in the directory where the file lives. 4. All else failing, open a DOS window, cd to the LyX bin directory, run 'lyx -dbg files' and report what shows up in the DOS window from the point you click File-Export-whatever onward. Paul

In such cases, wysiwyg's only advantage is you can experimentally fine tune in the gui, and once you have it the way you like it, you can make it into a style. I'm not sure TeX based authoring will ever gain significant mind share, because it's just too time consuming to make styles (environments). I've created my own .layout files for each of my books, and in each .layout file, the debugging phase for each command and environment has been excessive, like a day apiece. Contrast that to my work with WordPerfect 5.1, where creating even a complex style took 5 minutes. In MSWord, it took 10 to 15 minutes. There's only one situation where I use TeX based authoring (via LyX), full length books. And there's only one reason I use LyX-LaTeX-TeX for full length books -- because the typeset result looks so darned good. And of course, with something as long as a book, fine tuning would be really obnoxious. But for day to day short stories and web pages, I'm a WYSIWYG man. aspell and ispell troubles
In trying to get a spellchecker working for LyX I had the following troubles (I AM USING LyX FOR MAC, OSX 10.3.9): ASPELL: istallation was ok, I activated all the dictionaries on the control panel, but I get the following error when using LyX: The file /usr/local/lib/aspell-0.60/english can not be opened for reading. Well, the folder exists, and it contains several things but not that file. I am suspicious that the aspell installer put these things in another folder like /Library/Application Support/cocoAspell Is there a way to fix the problem? ISPELL: I got a tar file which requires some knowledge to be installed. Is there any binary package for non-expert users (OSX)? best regards Giorgio Zavarise

1. I cannot center the word Editor's Note
2. The line spacing on the last paragraph in this environment is spaced much
wider than other paragraphs in the same environment.
Note that the base for my layout file is memoir.

I think this is correct. Everything after center will be centered until you
tell it to do something else like raggedleft or raggedright
Not sure about the second issue as I couldn't seem to get the environment to
work? If you could send a lyx file off list to me with it 'working' I will
happily fiddle with it for you.

I've frankly had little success with cocoAspell (which, apparently, is what you've used to install aspell, right?). Instead, go right to the source: aspell itself. You can download the source and dictionaries here: http://aspell.sourceforge.net/. Because you're getting the source files, you'll need to compile and install them (which is the problem you've had for ispell). But it's really not hard; here's the procedure, which you'll need to do from an administrative account on your Mac. Download and both aspell itself (ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/ aspell-0.60.3.tar.gz) and the dictionaries you want (ftp:// ftp.gnu.org/gnu/aspell/dict), and make sure they're decompressed. (If you don't see folders with the appopriate names, doubleclick on the .gz files (and, if that only leaves you with .tar files, on these as well) until you have the folders.) Then open Terminal.app, and do the following: 1. Type cd (with the space, but without the quotes, and don't hit Return yet). 2. Drag the folder icon for the aspell program into the Terminal window (text will appear showing the directory the folder is in), and hit Return. 3. Type ./configure, followed by Return. That will spew out some incomprehensible messages about what it's doing. 4. When that's done, type make, followed by Return. Again, you'll get more output. 5. Similar issues keep coming up on cut and paste problems. For instance, recently there was this issue that you can't cut and paste between lyx documents and the simple answer is they have to be documents on the same instance of Lyx. I just wonder if it might be a better idea to scan through the lists and summarize all cut and paste tips and put them together on the wiki if you can spare the time. I have put someting on the wiki before. While the direct instructions are fairly simple I found some derivatives more problematic like the .jpg file being downloaded as .jpeg which creates problems for lyx. Christian at chr at home.se is the man you need to contact. Very helpful too. Re your other comment, like every other beauty Lyx has areas it could improve on, but the entire persona is what most of us go for. Lyx is an immensely productive tool. LyX will look for .layout files in the ${LYX_USER_SUPPORT}/layouts
directory where
LYX_USER_SUPPORT=$HOME/.lyx
on *nix and, I guess, Cygwin and
LYX_USER_SUPPORT=C:/Documents and Settings/USER/Application
Data/LyX
on Windows.
So, question 1: you're using the Cygwin executable, right?
I'm not using the Cygwin exe (I wasn't aware there is one; how does it
compare to the native?), but rather the one downloaded straight from
the site.
If you install the LyX layout file correctly, you should be able to
find the thing in the Layouts-Document menu. If the LaTeX class is
not installed correctly, then the class will be marked as
unavailable, meaning you can edit your .lyx document but you won't
be able to generate a .dvi file, etc.
Yes, I determined the possible locations, and the variable to set them
(LYX_USERDIR_136), but I've tried puting files in both locations to no
avail. I don't see the new layout at all.

How do I get a Personal dictionnaires in Aspell to use with lyx. I don't want to tell the program every time it starts my special words again and again. How do i create it. I know how to choose it in Lyx. Thanks Alex
Math fonts and Ubuntu
Hi all, I am using Ubuntu (both 5.4 and 5.10) and several cm fonts are not found by LyX, and I get messages like this: Could not get font '-tex-cmr10-medium-r-normal--15-0-0-0-p-0-fontspecific-0'. Using 'fixed'. Could not get font '-tex-cmex10-medium-r-normal--15-0-0-0-p-0-fontspecific-0'. Using 'fixed'. Could not get font '-tex-cmsy10-medium-r-normal--11-0-0-0-p-0-fontspecific-0'. Using 'fixed'. A search for cmsy10 shows several .ttf files: /var/lib/defoma/gs.d/dirs/fonts/cmsy10.ttf /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/c/cmsy10.ttf /var/lib/defoma/x-ttcidfont-conf.d/dirs/TrueType/cmsy10.ttf /usr/share/fonts/truetype/latex-xft-fonts/cmsy10.ttf There are also .tfm, .pfb and .mf files. So, the question is: what should be done so that LyX and X recognize and find the missing fonts? Thank you for any help, joao

Of course, complicated typesetting requirements _may_ take a long time to fulfill and _may_ require a lot of latex knowledge. But still, the typesetting work is supposed to be independent of the length of the document! So once you get the style right , it won't matter wether the book is 50 pages or 1500 pages. The typesetter's job is done - without touching the text the author prepared. And lyx/latex won't choke on the 1500 pages case either, the printing step will merely need more time. Getting the style right may be achieved merely by selecting a good document class, or by adding a few lines to the preamble, or in a worst case, adding several hundreds of lines of quite involved latex code to the preamble. The typesetter's job isn't so much in lyx, it is about setting up the layout in latex (and optionally, in .layout files so the author can select useful paragraph types.) Lyx is nice in that it allows this kind of separation. Some of the typesetter's work is easily done in lyx, such as electing the correct document class options. The rest mostly involves the preamble. Getting that right is no easier (and no worse) with lyx than with other ways of dealing with latex. I've been looking at the memoir class and pure LaTeX and managed to do some tweaks to the output. I'm doing a collection of short stories so chapters is a bit of a misnomer, and each one has a different author which makes things a bit complicated. But I think I'm getting there. Thanks for the other info about layout files etc. I don't really mind how it looks in LyX itself, so it seems like the book.cls file is the one to check out. Seems like a steep learning curve, so thanks for getting me started! Sure, it can be a lot to learn. But then you know it, and the next book gets much easier. Helge Hafting

Never mind that I use lyx 1.4, older versions like 1.3 and 1.2 gets the

Notice that the language is set in the line specifying document class.
Do you get the [portuges] part too?
Then notice the \usepackage{babel} right before
\begin{document}. Do you get that too?
Try making a .dvi the manual way, bu running
latex filename.tex
You should get a filename.dvi, or error messages.
What language do you get in the .dvi, assuming your latex
file contained the correct language setup with babel?
If your .tex file had the language setup but the .dvi got wrong
anyway, examine filename.log. That's where you find any
error messages. You will also find the version of latex
used, the first lines of my logfile is:

Several lines about activiating portuguese support. (The missing
hyphenation means that I might get bad word division at line ends,
but I still get the portuguese words.)
Try this, and find out where it goes wrong.
Does lyx output a .tex file with the correct language settings?
If no, try to set the document language right.

If lyx dows wrong and you're in a real hurry, try
copying the langauge stuff from my example
file into your .tex file.
When you have a correct .tex file, try running latex on it.
Do you get correct results? If so, then your latex is fine and
the problem is with lyx. If not, you have a latex problem.
Use a recent linux distribution, not something that is
several years old. After changing latex, such as adding
packages, you have to reconfigure lyx.
lyx 1.3: edit-reconfigure
lyx 1.4: tools-reconfigure
Then exit lyx, restart lyx, and try to make a portuguese
document again.

I try to use lyx from the command line. In lyx 1.4pre2 preview pdflatex goes fine. On the commandline I get: $ lyx --export latex myfile.lyx ... lot of messages but OK $ pdflatex myfile.tex ... goes fine except for an gif image. I can enter the latex question about an image not being found and the image is not there in the resulting pdf. Anyone an idea on what to do to get the image? Ok i tried this. I opened the preference in Lyx and entered a file. The Problem: Lyx will not create a new file personal dic file. I can only choose .ispell files. But I am using aspell. How do i get a new personal dictionary? Please open a bug report in bugzilla and attach a minimal example file + graphic that demonstrates the problem. LyX 1.4 should convert the image to a suitable format if necessary, so this looks like you have encountered a bug. Georg

Ie, is this a command line versus gui problem or is it one in which you have simply not defined the conversion process from gif - png ? Do you have ImageMagick's convert utility installed? Ok tried this again. I created a new Lyx file with two words, one was new for apell. So i entered a name for my personal dict /users/gahr/Documents/ test.ispell. Klicked save button. But after checking adding a new word to personal dic and spellchecking completed there was no file /users/gahr/Documents/ test.ispell So i tried another way and i created manually a new empty text file named it /users/gahr/Documents/test.ispell. But after checking and adding one word this file still remains empty. I'm using coco aspell, is this possible that the error is in coco aspell??? In LyX Preferences Language settings Spellchecker Personal dictionary, enter a path and filename. (I have /Users/bennett/Documents/bennett.ispell in there, but you can use anything, with or without the .ispell ending. When you click on the Browse button next to the Personal dictionary field, LyX filters out all files except for .ispell files, which is why I have chosen to keep the .ispell extension in my preferences. But that's not necessary.) Click on the Save button. No new file will be created yet, however. For that, you need to spellcheck a document and add a new word. Then that file will be created containing that word, and new words will be appended to the file whenever you add them. Note that the file is simply a plain text file; it doesn't matter that you're using aspell with a personal dictionary that has .ispell in it or .txt or even no extension at all. That this file is plain text means that you can open it in any text editor to check your list, and even modify it if you like. Bennett

Yes it should but you must note that Export-Pdflatex is different to Export-latex followed by running pdflatex on the file. In the second case the only Export that Lyx is performing is Lyx-tex. This will not convert any graphics file formats. Subsequent running of pdflatex is outside of Lyx and so it will run, find the gifs and have problems. The only way around this is to use a pdflatex compatible image format in the first place. THe reason for this is the following: Within Lyx when you Export-pdflatex it converts the graphics files, then does the convert to tex with the new file extensions. However if you Export-tex the output will have the gof extensions and so regardless of what you do next pdflatex will still come across gif files unless you edit the tex file. Note that uninstalling cocoAspell is more involved than you describe. Yes i installed all that and i checked with spotlight if the is something more around there is nothing i think. aspell was not working anymore from within lyx neither from the command line. So i think i did a clean install of aspell. Followed the ./configure make sudo make install steps. Now aspell is working again from the command line and from within lyx. But i will not create this f*+ personal dictionary file. Someone got some more ideas? The only way around this is to use a pdflatex compatible image format in the first place. THe reason for this is the following: Within Lyx when you Export-pdflatex it converts the graphics files, then does the convert to tex with the new file extensions. However if you Export-tex the output will have the gof extensions and so regardless of what you do next pdflatex will still come across gif files unless you edit the tex file. Given the greater margin of time, I could look up a few things from a course I had put together for a small publishing house some time ago which you could consider adding to your work. In the lyx manual there is written that the personal dictionary file will be created if i put in a new name in the perfereces in lyx. And after first succsessfull checkeing there will be a personal dictonary file. My problem is either with apspell direkt or with cocoaspell, that no new words will be learned. I'm realy and i don't know what else i can do. I unistalled lyx. Unistalled aspell. Cocoaspell. etc. Someone got the same problem or can anybody help me. Could this be a right problem? So i tried some more and i'm thinking that cocoaspell is working again and i have choosen the en.pws file that cocaspell creates. I can perfectly add some word to this personal word list from outside of lyx but If i try it from within lyx the situation is that lyx know all new words cocoaspell leared outside of lyx, but it will not add any new words. I think the add button is simply not working in my case. So all the problems before result in an not working add funktion within lyx. Anybody a clue? Hm tried this before but gave it another try. I installed lyx cocoaspell or aspell only. Removed /Users/gahr/Library/Application Support/LyX this is the place where in the apple installation the perferences are stored. But i have the same problem i can't add word to a dictionary from within lyx. The second problem: because of the way it rewrites the headers, if I hit `reply to all` it still only includes the mailing list in the to lines, even though I wanted it to give me the person's address so I could cheaply take it off the mailing list. If someone really decides to make the change, please set the rewriter to put both the originator and the mailing list on the reply to line. Every other list I've ever been on has sent replies to the list, so it did surprise me that it didn't work that way here - I'm expecting emails from lists to have different behaviour to emails from individuals. The second problem: because of the way it rewrites the headers, if I hit `reply to all` it still only includes the mailing list in the to lines, even though I wanted it to give me the person's address so I could cheaply take it off the mailing list. My experience of lists is that 99% of the time I want to reply to the whole list, so it makes sense to me to have that as the default. If someone really decides to make the change, please set the rewriter to put both the originator and the mailing list on the reply to line. I've also got several duplicate replies to messages I've posted because people have sent to the list and cc'd me as well (maybe thinking I might not be subscribed). My thoughts are that if you want a reply it's courteous to be subscribed to the list, even if it's only for a short while. Sorry for the OT list pollution if this is a regular topic that comes up... But it might help with the problem of disjointed threads in the archives. Paul.

Then cat en.pws (or win32 type en.pws) if using English language. The added misspelled words should be appended to the bottom of the list. If the test doesn't work (display the newly added words) then that means the en.pws is not being written to, probably a path error. If you had a large list of technical words not usually found in a dictionary and you wanted to add them to your dictionary. Dump the word lists of both the standard and technical dictionaries, merge them, and then use aspell create master to recreate a combined dictionary. If there is a word that one wants to change the spelling of in several instances, search and replace is usually used. Bennett is the resident os x guru. en.pws is the filename of the personal dictionary under win32, at least. Also, perhaps it will be necessary to reconfigure after erasing the personal dict field. Looks like an error in your configuration files. Move all of them out of the way! In LyX, leave the personal dictionary field blank. I did come across this advice under lyxrc: # Specify an alternate personal dictionary file. If the file name does not # begin with /, $HOME is prefixed. The default is to search for a personal # dictionary in both the current directory and $HOME, creating one in $HOME # if none is found. The preferred name is constructed by appending .ispell_ # to the base name of the hash file. For example, if you use the English # dictionary, your personal dictionary would be named .ispell_english. #\use_personal_dictionary true #\personal_dictionary .ispell_dansk This seems to suggest that the last two lines would need to be uncommented appropriately in order to enable an alternate personal dictionary.

Running out of argument space always triggers my xargs detector: find foo -name '*.gif' -print0 | xargs -0 -n 1 convert -f gif Which has the advantage that it will work properly on files with newlines in the name. Note that this uses my open utility symlinked as convert, not the convert command that comes with Imagemagick. Clever quotes
Suppose I have some text that has a lot of quoted speech in it, but it's
supplied using standard () straight single and double quotes.
Is there some pre-processing tool that will try to convert them to
proper curly quotes suitable for LaTeX (``) and ('')?
I know it can't be done perfectly and will need manual tweaking, but
there must be something to do most of the work.
All I can think of is to use some word processor that has a clever
quotes function (e.g. MS Word) and then use something like wvLatex to
export that to LaTeX format. Or do a search and replace.
Is there a command-line tool that does this using some heuristics to
cover most areas that could be problematic?

missing character (Lyx on Mac)
Hi everybody, I've just installed Lyx and even though things went fairly smooth, I'm struggling with a bunch of minor issues. (Using the latest Lyx version, Mac OS 10.4.2, Powerbook with a german keyboard. Gerben Wierda's TeX, ghostscript8, Freetype2, libiconf, libwmf, ImaheMagick, cm-super packages, ran the Lyx Installer script) - Lyx won't recognize the ^ key at all (as in x^3 for x cubed). It does recognizeshift ^ though, which correctly yields°on my german keyboard. - Whenever I click View - DVI nothing happens. Am I not supposed to get some kind of window displaying the Latex source code??? I'm planning to word process my math assignments (bachelor of computer science), so any help is highly appreciated! Depends on the shell. { and } are magic to csh and zsh, and need
quoting if you're using those. They aren't magic to sh, so they don't
need quoting if you're using that. I don't keep bash installed, so I
don't know if you need them with bash. As an ex-csh user, I quote them
out of habit.
But the basename invocation used by lars is wrong. It needs to be
$(basename {} .gif).png (I always use $(...); you have to to nest
command substitutions, and I find it a bit more readable). If you
leave out the .gif, you get the full filename.
Ain't scripting fun ;)
Your scripts work much better if you start them with #!/usr/bin/env python

sed, perl, python or any other scripting language would do it for you.

Generally speaking, I'm a sed fan but it's not the right tool for the job here if the quote can go over multiple lines. It's also hard (not impossible) to keep track of whether you're inside or outside of the quote; matters if you're using different replacements for the left and right sides. -- Angus
PDF (dvipdfm) X PDF (pdflatex)
I realized that export using the pdflatex do not produce the same pdf output that the dvipdfm. The difference lay between the size of up and bottom margins and the size of the files. Why, PDF (pdflatex) -- build an output with about (e.g. 29kb) and PDF (dvipdfm) -- build an output with about (ex. 53kb). Which one is worth to work on? If not, LyX will tell your Mac to open it, but your Mac won't know what to do with it, and nothing will happen. I suspect that's your problem. To solve it, you can do any one of 3 things here: 1. In the Finder, find a .dvi file on your Mac (perhaps generated from LyX with File Export), and do File Get Info In the window that pops up, make sure your have a .dvi viewer selected in the Open With drop-down list, and click on the Change all button to make it the default for your Mac. 2. In LyX, go to File Preferences File Formats, and select DVI in the list, changing the Viewer field to open -a xxx, where xxx is the name of your .dvi viewer. Click the Modify button and then the Save button. This will make LyX use this viewer no matter what the OS default is. 3. Generate .PDFs instead of .DVIs (even choosing dvipdfm, if you like). Bennett

The trick is to use a feature/widget called Reply to list if your clients presents it. I per- sonally use Thunderbird for mail (locally) and Horde for mailing lists. Experience has taught me how to reply correctly, having made some mistakes in the past. If nobody pointed this out, you possibly would never have learned. Think of it as a gentle reminder. How to recover dvi - ps - pdf output?
I need to recover the ability to generate (and see) a Pdf file via the dvips route. I lost the relevant items in the View menu a long time ago and never bother fixing the problem, because I was happy with pdftex. But now I have problems with the latter (after installing some fancy fonts) and need to go the other route. Can anyone remind me how to reinstruct LyX to perform the proper conversions? I am on a Mac, 10.3.9, running LyX 1.3.6 with Gerben Wierda's version of TeTex. dvips and company work fine when used from the console and/or TexShop. I know this is a question that has been asked many times, but my search through the archives didn't help. Apologies in advance.
