Re: [MBZ] A quiz question for you

2020-12-20 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
We have a large pool of officers and their families coming into the area due to
SOCOM and MacDil AFB being here. Probably a third of my current neighborhood
consists of active duty officers and retirees. They make for great renters,
despite the sometime quick changes that can result from reassignments and TDY.
However, the housing allowance they get is well over what most rents are if
they have a family, so renting to them is easy and there is always someone
right behind them if they leave.

My former neighbor across the street has been renting their house to military
only for the last five years and has only had about 2-3 months out of that time
with the house unoccupied. We would have gone that route as well had we chosen
to keep the place and rent.

That being said, I just didn’t want the hassle of being a landlord. That, and
the last mortgage we had on the place, a 15 year note, would have made for the
cash flow to be minimal as well. We certainly would have turned a profit after
taxes and expenses, but not enough that we thought worthwhile. Had we owned the
place outright or had a lower mortgage payment, it might have been more
attractive.

At the start. Sold for $15k over the listing price, had it under contract in
less than three days after we listed it. Four offers, three full price. Closed
in less than 30 days, at the end of March. Used a fixed price listing service
($700) and only paid the buyer’s agent 2%. You would have been proud.

Re: [MBZ] OT - The Vietnam War Series by Ken Burns

2020-12-19 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Watched the first episode last night. Wife had seen it already and said I would
be pissed after I saw it. I was. Why couldn’t the French have just left them
alone after WWII and ditched the colonialism thing? The Vietnamese were all
ready to do their own thing as they had in the past, no need for some other
nation state to stand over them and tell them how things are done.

Like most of Ken Burns’ stuff, it was well done. Looking forward to the next
episode.

We were both convinced we had it in February, as we had sore throats, flu-like
symptoms, etc. I did an antibody test in August or September and it was
negative, so I’m guessing that means I didn’t have it.

Re: [MBZ] OT - The Vietnam War Series by Ken Burns

2020-12-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Agreed. As I mentioned, I had some school buddies who’s older brothers were
over there, and when they came back some of them were pretty messed up. I
worked for one of them when I pumped gas a few months in high school, and this
guy was a real hum dinger. He couldn’t handle stress at all. We weren’t allowed
to have more than a certain amount of cash on us at any time, so if you
collected a number of sales and were over the limit you were supposed to make a
drop in the safe. During rush hour he would get so worked up about having to
make drops after nearly every sale that he would end up going into the office
and locking himself in there so he could calm down. We would be pumping gas and
not able to make change in some instances because we would need to get change
from him.

One of my best friends is a Vietnam vet. He was a photographer for the Army,
and while he saw some action he wasn’t in the really nasty stuff according to
him. Good guy, pretty stable from what I’ve seen over 20 some years, but he’s
got some personality traits that I suspect are either a result of his service
or that he’s a hard core New Yorker - tough to make the distinction.

Re: [MBZ] Faux Tucker for a fraction of the cost

2020-12-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
A high school buddy used to be a “junior” curator at the 500 Speedway museum.
He talked about how they were really picky about donations of cars, no matter
what they were, because they almost always came with some sort of demands or
requirements from the owner. Things like how they would be displayed, whether
or not the museum could sell them in the future, etc., etc. He said that in
some cases when they accepted donations of multiple vehicles it could get
dicey, because some could be real clunkers requiring substantial restoration
($$$) that weren’t of much value or interest to the collection.

He’s not there any more, which is too bad, as he would be a good resource for
the ones they’ve been actively auctioning off some of the collection from the
“vault” (their underground storage garage that’s not part of the public view)
on BaT of late. Too many cars, not enough space, storing and maintaining them
costs money and takes away from the restoration and maintenance of cars that
are more closely related to the subject of the museum.

Re: [MBZ] Kleb needs this historic vehicle

2020-12-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
And that’s why I would consider buying one, as well as one of the Ford hybrids.
I can’t do a fully electric car as my daily mileage if I’m driving just for a
commute I’m approaching that 50 mile mark.

Ford is dumping sedans, so their Fusion “Energi” can be had for cheap.

Re: [MBZ] OT: Interesting Satellite Tech

2020-12-18 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It predates drones. There have been third party services that use Google Earth
and other photo mapping services to look for changes to buildings and property.
They sell the data to municipalities for identifying changes to properties.

The county I lived in Indiana back in 2008-2011 used a survey service for the
property appraiser like this to bust people for improvements to their property.
I had a neighbor who put up a garden shed and within about three months they
got a notice of reassessment. I believe they also got busted for not getting a
permit, too. Of course, someone for the county could have taken notice or a
neighbor could have ratted them out, too.

Just watched Man Lab season 3, episode 1. Sort of quirky, but engaging. The
pizza oven build wasn’t that great, but calling the national steeplechase was
pretty interesting. The wine tasting segment sort of reminds me of the series
that had the two guys who sent the doofus buddy out in the world to do stupid

Unlike much of what I have watched lately, I don’t feel like I want my time

Re: [MBZ] OT: Statins

2020-12-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
There was a guy I worked with at Kohler some years back who was the textbook
version of a healthy man, exercised regularly, was at or near his proper
weight, BMI was excellent, ate healthy, but he had a history of heart disease
in his family. As a result he was on statins back in the day when they were
pretty new (1990s?) I just recall him telling me what his cholesterol numbers
were, and they were stupid crazy (high). Apparently it was a genetic thing and
there wasn’t a lot he could do about it short of pharmacological interventions.

Roger, don’t put words in my mouth, we both know that’s not what I said. Rather
than obfuscate try dropping the sarcasm and accept that I gave examples based
on my experience working the polls in several states for a significant amount
of time. I didn’t claim my experience to be exhaustive, I merely drew upon many
decades of direct experience. In how many elections have you been a poll worker?

And I don’t trust computers - I verify. That’s why there are paper copies. I’ve

In that particular situation I think it’s more a matter that colon cancer is
very slow to progress and not something who’s symptoms are noticed until it’s
at an advanced stage. Considering that there’s a 10 year span between
recommended checks I don’t see it being a major expense for the population as a
whole (no pun intended, of course!)

2020-12-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I am not at liberty to discuss operational details about our voting system. You
can read all you want at:

https://www.votehillsborough.org/ELECTIONS/Election-Security
<https://www.votehillsborough.org/ELECTIONS/Election-Security>

What I will say is that most election or vote tabulating systems have the
ability to transmit data in a secure manner, and when this feature is used it’s
only on and working for as long as it takes to establish an encrypted
connection via cellular phone frequencies, transmit the encrypted data, and
close the connection. It’s never connected to the “Internet”, the connection is
purely end to end tunneled and encrypted. The data is the tabulated vote count,
typically.

However, before this data is ever sent, a paper copy of the tabulations are
printed out. This is hand carried to the SOE as well as posted to the window or
door of the polling station.

Again, believe what you will, but the checks and balances that exist in the
system prevent and have prevented for decades any manipulation on the scale
that people have claimed. For those who choose not to accept this, I encourage
them to sign up and work the polls in any election, local or national. Be a
part of the process and you’l have a far greater appreciation for it and its
integrity.

This is content far more appropriate for Okie Talk, suffice to say that the
courts have spoken regarding the various lawsuits and found all without merit.
Being that they were filed in numerous (different) venues with a wide range of
judges as far as political affiliation and backgrounds, I think the results
pretty much speak for themselves.

Understood, but also consider that checks are being made against the voter
registration records as well, so it’s not just a matter of signatures. I agree,
I’ve never been comfortable with absentee/mail in ballots for that reason. I
can’t say I sign my name in a consistent manner, so what I sign one day might
not exactly resemble what I sign today. That’s a concern for me.

Pretty much, although the information that Rick just posted about the county in
MI that was audited points out the discrepancies that exist when there aren’t
proper controls in place and the poll workers or elections officials aren’t

I skimmed it. Lots and lots of serious violations of the 90 day Safe Harbor Act
that prescribes no changes to voting equipment prior to the election. It also
appears that the employees working with the system were not well trained and
proper audit controls were not in place.

In summary, it sounds like the Three Stooges were running the polls in what
appears to be a relatively small, rural county. And that’s not to dismiss the
issue - it’s more a point that small counties or municipalities often don’t
have the proper training or controls in place, or they’re not well versed in
them and when things go south, they do so in a hurry and on a major scale.

I bought a really nice Schwinn spin bike ($1000 new) about a year ago for $100.
It was as good if not better than the “official” bikes at the Y. Unfortunately,
I never really got set up to use it as there just wasn’t a good space for it in
the house. I tried using it in the guest room but it was in the way and I had a
hard time finding a way to keep the carpet under it from getting soggy. When I
saw what exercise equipment was going for recently, I put it on FB marketplace
for $150 and it was gone within minutes.

Re: [MBZ] This is not political, but a serious question, if you can’t handle it then hit delete

2020-12-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It’s not. I’ve worked the elections both here and in two other states I’ve
lived in for over 40 years. I’ve worked elections since I was 16 years old and
the days of the voting machines with the curtains and little levers. My father
was a precinct committeeman and working elections was expected of all of us
kids, and most of us have continued that effort since.

The “check in” station you mention is connected to a secure network that is
used to access the voter rolls. It’s not on the “Internet”, it’s an end to end,
encrypted, tunneled connection to the SOE which can be a hard wired or wifi
connection. This is common practice and is configured and set up well in
advance to maintain the security of that data. One of my teams is charged with
testing and verification of these connections prior to the elections. The
ballot printers are a part of this system.

The scanners are purely stand-alone devices and have no connectivity.

Counts are typically moved from the scanners to the polling system via secure
memory cards that are encrypted. Some scanners also have the capability of
printing out results on a paper tape, like an adding machine. The numbers,
after being reconciled, are either transmitted to the supervisor of elections’
via the local client at the polling place or the data can be hand carried (in a
secure, chain of custody strongbox) back to the SOE (which is how they get back
there anyway, along with the paper ballots.)

Anyone who has worked the polls has been exposed to these processes and
procedures used to guarantee the integrity of the elections. It’s certainly
different from one state or municipality to the other, but the general approach
is the same. It’s highly controlled and closely audited. Again, it’s not
perfect, but the claims of widespread, massive voter fraud are gross
misstatements.

Before I started working on his 124 a buddy of mine’s dad who owned an import
car shop maintained it. We often joked about how that car paid his college

Re: [MBZ] This is not political, but a serious question, if you can’t handle it then hit delete

2020-12-17 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Working with the SOE (supervisor of elections) here I can calm your fears.

As previously stated, a nation state, most likely the Russians, did breach
several state’s voter registration databases aound the 2016 election. While
problematic for a lot of reasons, doing so had no effect on the actual voting
process.

The actual voting systems, which vary from state to state, are always “air
gapped” in the sense that voting machines are never, ever connected to the
Internet or any network of any kind. As described by others, ballots are
typically printed out for each voter as they register or check in at a polling
place, filled out by the voter, then scanned by a completely stand-alone voting
machine. The votes tabulated in that machine are collected on a memory card or
other means of electronic storage that is encrypted using state of the art
encryption protocols. There is a clearly defined chain of custody involving the
handling of the machines, memory cards, ballots and anything else involved in
the process.

When auditing the results, paper ballots marked by the voters are scanned by a
machine and tabulated separately to compare with the results tabulated by the
voting machines.

It’s a very, very highly controlled process that has changed little over the
years. Most states and municipalities continue to use a paper ballot of some
sort in order to provide a hard copy of the votes - I’m not aware of anyone who
does it 100% electronically, although there may be somewhere.

The stories about massive numbers of votes being added/removed and such are
bogus. The process simply doesn’t have the capacity for such alterations, and
even if someone tried it, the audits done using the physical paper ballots
would quickly reveal any discrepancies. Mistakes do happen, and they’re
typically identified in short order when audits are performed and corrected on
the spot. It’s still a very manual process everywhere I know of, and that’s one
of the reasons why the integrity of the process has been preserved.

2020-12-16 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
My ex brother in law bought one of those (turd brown color) new in 1977.
Brought it over to the house and asked me if I would service it for him (I had
been maintaining his Fiat 124 sport coupe as a favor to my sister.)

Took one look at it after raising the engine cover and immediately said “No!” I
can’t imagine what a nightmare it must be to work on that engine. Looked like a
fun car, though. I don’t recall ever driving it, but I might have. The 124 was

Re: [MBZ] 5g speeds

2020-12-15 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Nope. The cellular guys were already talking about this when I was getting out
of the generator business, and they thought it was all a lot of pixie dust.

The mm wave will support some serious speeds, but it has very limited range.
This is what they deploy in metropolitan areas. The lower frequency (600 MHz?)
stuff will go into outlying areas where line of sight and latency is expected.

It matters not to me, as there’s nothing I do with a phone that would ever
require those kinds of speeds that I could imagine.

Re: [MBZ] Tie rod end removal

2020-12-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is in an ML, which has a little different configuration as it’s rack and
pinion, not recirculating ball/Pitman arm.

The tie rod is two pieces, with the ball joint and threaded piece one part, and
another threaded rod that connects inside the steering rack, how exactly I
forget. For that matter, the part of the rod in the steering rack might not be
serviceable separately, I don’t recall.

The tie rod itself is pretty cheap in the aftermarket, like $25 or thereabouts.
With it disconnected from the steering rack, you can remove and replace the
seal (bellows) on the rack without a lot of difficulty. It’s a little tight,
but can be done. What you can’t do on the steering rack without a major
undertaking, is replace the steering rack mounts, which are common failure item
by now, unfortunately. The rack is installed tightly between the frame and
drive train, and is near impossible to get to. I think that’s a four hour flat
rate job.

Re: [MBZ] Tie rod end removal

2020-12-14 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
The boot that goes on the steering rack is sold by the dealer in a kit form
with a tube of grease and a new clamp pretty cheaply, like under $20. I know
because one of mine was torn and I replaced it along with the tie rod because
the ball joint seal on the tie rod was bad, too.

I have a similar arrangement for “paddle” or spade type wood bits in one drawer
of my tool box. It holds them all and “lays down” so I can close the drawer. I
just cut the 2x4 to the width of the drawer and put a screw in from each side
to hold it in place and act as a pivot. It does take a lot of space, but at
least my bits are in order and stored in an organized fashion.

Nothing special going on. Just run the VB installer, be sure to download the
add-ons for it, too, and then spin up a VM and install your Windows instance.
Pretty straightforward.

I’ve never been enamored of Parallels. It seems fiddly to work with and as I
recall was nowhere near as simple to set up and run VMs on as VirtualBox.

Re: [MBZ] OT: USB drive size for factory recovery media

2020-12-12 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Ballpark I would say 16GB should be more than adequate. Besides making a
recovery drive, I would also make a system image backup as well, but keep it
current. That way if the machine cacks you get pretty much everything back,
including your personal stuff. A recovery drive only restores the system, not
the user data.

I would add that the builder who built our house in Wisconsin was quite
competent, honest, and had excellent subs. Granted, he was a custom
homebuilder, not building tract homes, but he was very good. We had almost
nothing in the way of exceptions or issues with the construction of that house.

Builders can be idiots. Ours was, mainly because they were tossing homes up so
fast they weren’t paying attention to details like we did.

They had these little multi-part carbonless forms you could fill out to address
discrepancies you found. After about 30 days or so of the framing going up they
just gave us a box of them.

Understand that we didn’t ask for or point out anything that wasn’t clearly
spelled out in the construction documents - nearly every issue was their own
fault. We cost them so much on that house that they ended up changing their
construction practices in some areas and even changed the contract. They were
simply being half-assed and we caught them at it and held them up to the
standards they were allegedly maintaining.

Nowadays, builders will make you sign a contract with arbitration clauses and
NDAs. That wasn’t the case in 1995. Our house in Indiana has arbitration
clauses for darned near every aspect of the contract. This way they can fight
you and not get hauled into court, which is far more expensive - and - the NDA
prevents you from going public about the problem(s) you arbitrated.

Pretty sneaky.

We’ve always owned our tanks for just that reason.

Our former house across the street has a 100 gallon tank buried in the front
yard. Right after we moved in the LP supplier that filled and supplied it to
the builder sent us a bill for the monthly tank lease payment.

Nope.

In the bill of materials for the adder that covered all of the LP system
installed in the house was a 100 gallon underground tank, related piping, etc.,
etc. We paid for that adder (around $800, I seem to recall.) When we told the
LP supplier we owned the tank, they said no. We went to the builder and pointed
out that we paid for the tank as a part of the adder based on the contract.

“But all of the tanks we supply are leased.”

"Nope. We paid for this one, it’s in the bill of materials. Contractually, it’s
ours. Builder shall supply…."

Builder had to buy out the lease for the tank. Lesson learned.

Tanks are qualified by either the DOT (consumer tanks typically 100 gallons or
less) or AMSE (no requalification required.) My 500 gallon tank is an ASME
tank and essentially a lifetime tank. It’s got an anode that can be replaced as
well as the outside being coated and wrapped with specialized materials to
protect it.

Re: [MBZ] Rich White Folks' Profligacy

2020-12-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
This is why I belong to the RWF FB Marketplace group for a nearby development.
Rich people’s trash/cast offs are usually pretty nice stuff.

We scored a beautiful Kincaid cherry dining room table for the hacienda in
Indiana a few weeks ago for $150. Ended up spending more on new chairs for it
than the table, but it’s really nice and has two leafs (leaves?), too, so we
can seat like 10 people. I was hoping to score a nice headboard or bedroom set
for our guest bedroom up north before we left, but nothing came up, darn it.

I’ve scouted out similar groups in Indianapolis but most are on the other side
of town. I may still attempt to join a couple, however…

Re: [MBZ] VW Content: Isn't Poos cute?

2020-12-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
You’re too old to have owned a “real” Beetle. At least not as a daily driver.
That was back in the day of $100-$200 cars.

“Automatic Stickshift”.

Never had one, fixed a lot of them for friends that did. Contact on the bottom
of the shifter would often get cruddy and no shift results. I also hated how if
you rested your hand on the shifter and pushed it down, the contact would open
and it would engage the clutch and the engine would freewheel.

Re: [MBZ] Flying today

2020-12-07 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Flew back from Indianapolis on SWA yesterday and the plane was maybe 1/3 -1/2
full. A flight to Baltimore boarded just before us and there were only 40
people on it. Mask wearing was complied with for the most part, I didn’t see
anyone trying to “cheat” as we had on previous flights. Had a guy sitting in
front of us on a previous flight who kept taking his mask off. Ratted him out
once, after that the cabin crew kept an eye on him and nailed him a second
time. They pretty much told the guy that if they caught him with his mask off
again that he would be banned from SWA.

Hmm. Beetles I had:

1966 sedan
1968 convertible
1971 convertible
1959 barn door van
1971 Fastback

At least those are the ones I recall. There may have been others. Rebuilt a few
engines, did a fair amount of floor pan and rocker replacements. The 1959 barn
door van was my all time favorite. Paid $200 for it in 1977. Can’t imagine what
it would be worth today.

Re: [MBZ] 1995 E320 $3,500

2020-12-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
It’s not so much that the upholstery “wore out” but the perforated material in
the center of the cushion breaks down from wear and UV and tears easily.

My 1995 E420 has the exact same issue, probably because it spend most of it’s
life in south Florida. If this car spent a lot of time outside that could
easily explain it. Also, the outer panels of the lower seat cushions in the
rear are broken down as well, also an indicator of UV damage.

I think I look especially good. The hat is a nice touch.

Being the youngest, I always got suckered into playing dress up with my big

Mom’s 56 Beetle is in the background.
