Re: [ql-users] [Spam?] Re: waiting for QPC print - meanwhile

2006-12-18 Thread Jochen Merz
Dear Bill,

if you need Stylus 740 cartridges - I can supply them.
We still use several EPSONs here, mainly 740s and 900 and 980s.

The alternative ones (PrintRite, which we use for many years) cost
EUR 3 for Black and EUR 4 for the colour cartridge (all for Stylus
740) ... plus postage, but they are not heavy.

I've got some in stock, expiry 2008.

Best regards Jochen

QPC print arrived today so I 'll see how it performs
managed to get output to the printer thanks to Per just in time to find the

So as I was in Berwick today I thought I'd get a cartridge for the Epson
(stylus 740) only to find it's not supported any more by Curries or Argos
although I forgot about our branch of Red Shark, not sure about it as I
 think they went belly up.
Anyway I came away with an HP printer from Argos for £19.99 ( spare black
cartridge at £14.99 ) has the world gone mad - yes I think so.
got it set up and printing and guess what - yep archive trips up again,
seems it is the USB port that it doesn't like as I had the Epson going
connected to both USB and Par ( LPT1).

So tonight I'll try QPC print - oh what fun

[Ql-Users] Menu Extension update

2008-06-16 Thread Jochen Merz

Hi everybody,

... the last mail reminded me to report that a new version
of the Menu Extension is available on the J-M-S support page
for registered users.

The version with all the changes made 3 months ago at Eindhoven
proved working well (Roy reported in BOW in Issue 4 of the current QL
Today volume about the changes). It just needed one little tweak, which
I did at the meeting last saturday ... and while doing this, a MOVE item
was added to List-Select :-)

Hi everybody,

I was able to use the Wind for a short while (Andrea bought one for
herself)...

Excellent machine: large display, harddisk, WinXP, Bluetooth, WLAN,
no noise and very fast.

QPC runs very well :-) And the resolution is fine for QPC.

For Windows programs, I miss more lines on the display (you have to
scroll a lot!) but Andrea says you get used to it.
She replaced her 17 (well working!) Acer laptop by the Wind...
weight and no noise are worth trading in the resolution for, she
says. She's missing the keypad,though... but that hardly fits into
THAT size ;-)

10. So all in all, after the initial rush I find I need something a

Hi Per,

I agree that the 701 is too limiting; this is why I favour the Acer
Aspire with 120GB HD. It's £229, so still well within the cheap end
of the spectrum (compared to £300+ for the 901/MSI Wind) and is very
small and efficient.

Do try one. The 1024 x 600 resolution over the Eee 701's 800 x 480
is a massive advantage.

From what you've said, it seems that the cheaper systems aren't much
good

for regular use.

What about someone like me who has an occasional need for a portable
QL away from home, where weight and small size might be important?

Or would I be better off (even for occasional light use) to save my
pennies and wait until I can afford a more expensive machine?

Or would you go as far as to say that I'd be better off with a
traditional laptop PC?

Hi Malcolm,

I received the Friday 27th February 2009 the Quanta magazine Volume 26,
Issue 1, for February / March 2009.

I received it as well.

Yes, well done - and I prefer to see the ads in full page mode again -
excellent decision. And up-to-date :-)

One other point. Is anyone else experiencing a poor quality with the
brown envelope used for the posting of the magazine.

Yes, for quite a while already.

My Issue, once again has arrived in a very crumpled envelope, with an
open slit along the entire top edge ( although the magazine was still
inside ). Is this only effecting the London area in the UK ? As
another London Group member has had a similar experience with the
envelope packaging being used, arriving in crumpled state.

This is how nearly all issues arrive for a while.

Re: [Ql-Users] SMSQ.J-M-S.COM pointing to something else

2009-04-10 Thread Jochen Merz

Hi Doug,

Not clear how all these things work. However, I wonder if the below was
involved in my considerable frustration with the JMS site recently:

Dont think so. It only affected subdomains.

I've been trying to get the latest QPC v3 (now 3.33, unless you want the 3.34 beta). I
would click on Details for QPC, not seeing anything else to give info on how
to get it from JMS, one of two major distributors. This simply brought up another
instance of where I had just been--this happened four times, taking me in circles. After
half an hour of that and some other frustrations, I gave up.

No, I tried it - it all worked.

FYI, I then went to Marcus' (Kilgus) site and tried to send email requesting a
QPC password. The message failed and was sent back after 48 hours or so of
non-delivery.

Did the mail go to Marcel or to my mail address (s...@j-m-s.com)?
Email to s...@j-m-s.com is perfectly well working.

So, unless something changes, I will abandon trying to get the latest QPC. I will try to
take my old v3 diskette and put it under XP on my MacIntel (MacBook Pro, Mac OS X/
10.4.11, Parallels VM, XP Pro). Again, FYI, 397 Doug LaVerne (Cust. #).

Please try again and let me know EXACTLY where it fails - IF it fails.

Thanks,Jochen

Thanks much sorry for the troubles,

Hi everybody on the list,

I received an email from a QLer this afternoon, being surprised and
worried that smsq.j-m-s.com points to my shareware services.

Actually, ALL my subdomains of j-m-s.com are pointing to the main
index.htm ... I have had my provider putting an SSL certificate
over www.j-m-s.com and it seems, while doing this, all subdomains
got changed as well.

http://j-m-s.com/smsq
hold the contents of smsq.j-m-s.com
so you can get to it if you want, but I hope it will be fixed
very, very soon.

(Previously, I only had an SSL certificate for j-m-s.DE ... so
order and contact and everything went to j-m-s.DE). However, I
would like to have things properly divided and set up, so I bought a
certificate for .COM as well.

So, no need to worry, I haven't given up QLing suddenly and I do
not plan to do so!!!

Cheers Jochen

Hi Jochen,

Interesting that it has been so long now.

Well done to you, and always high quality output.

The recent small changes to the QL Today magazine have improved it even
further too.

Hi everybody,

just wanted to announce that J-M-S was founded 25 years ago
(2nd of May 1984) and has survived for 25 years now!!

What a great time it was. I remember many events, starting from
early QL shows in Munich (Gaden), or Bielefeld, for example,
Austrian events in Heidenreichstein, Paris, UK events all over the
country, many US events, Italian ones, Dutch ... early events did not
take place at Eindhoven ... and much, much more.

Slight problem: I feel it should not be *me* writing about JMS, so
maybe I could ask for some short stories about JMS - from your side.
For the next QL Today. Which means, I need them soon. :-)

Talking about QL Today. Thanks to all who renewed already. This is very
encouraging!
For those who missed the early renewal deadline: if you renew within the
next week (with Bruce or me), we will still accept the old price.
For UK, subscribers, this is only £25.50 ... Bruce has just updated his
website: http://www.ql-qvd.com/products.html
Subscription form, via letter, fax, or no form and email work as well :-)
Take this as a little celebration gift.
Of course, this applies to renewals AND new subscribers.
So, very final deadline: 10th of May.

For readers with auto-renewal (especially German ones with direct
debit): you will benefit from the reduced early-renewal price, although
I have not charged the account yet (did not mention this on the form).

I am a bit in a rush at the moment - so more offers will follow later,
and through the website and the magazine, so that everybody will be able
to see them, not just list subscribers.

I don't know what will happen in the next 25 years, but I am happy to
look forward to them ... but let's deal with issue 4 of Volume 13 first
(material is always welcome!!) and then go together for Volume 14!

All the best, Jochen

This menu_rext release is only licensed for use on SMSQ/E

... considering that I am running SMSQ/E. (Checked just after the error
message using ver$ = HBA and ver$(1) = 3.13)

The other problem I have is with the option to move the whole window
when dragging with the mouse. The problem is that the window will only
move up when I move the mouse up but will remain stationary if I move
the mouse in any other directions. The mouse works fine otherwise. The
mouse is an Atari mouse attached to the QIMI port of my Aurora board.
The same problem exist on Minerva + the latest Wman Ptr_gen.

After more experimentation, I noticed that it is in fact possible to
move the window in all direction IF I move the mouse very vigourously.
And I mean VERY vigourously. Even, doing that will make the window move
a tiny bit where it would be supposed to move all the way across the
screen. Again, moving up is smooth and fast. I cannot check if the same
problem occurs with a serial mouse as I don't have a compatible mouse
anymore.

I have not finished updating my setup, I might have other questions or
problem to report later.

My articles Taking a Hint (pop-up hints and reading lines longer than

demonstrate that much of the stuff weve become accustomed to in modern
mainstream programs are relatively easily achievable on QL systems too.
Most of the techniques used wont be news for many of the contributors to
this thread. Anyone else can simply use and modify the S*Basic routines
listed.

An upcoming article (Ive been told it will appear in the next QLT),
Resz, is about interactive resizing of windows It was inspired by Ralf
Reköndt's comment on this list: ..how nice [it would be] to use the
Windows facility of changing a window size in the lower right edge of a
window.. - and the subsequent discussion.

My demo in the latter article shows up an annoying (lack of?) feature in
ptrgen that it doesnt recognise that a mouse button is pressed when it
initialises: it assumes buttons are up :o(

And while we are at it: It would be great if ptrgen would be extended to
allow registering a keystroke modifier, such as ALT, CTRL and SHIFT
together with a mousebutton press. A couple of spare bits in the pointer
record might be available for this? That would allow mass selects and
toggles, as in Windows etc.

Dear George,

Marcel's and Jochen's comments made me think twice about considering adding
information about my TurboPTR on Rich's site.

I was referring to self-advertising for commercial products.

I regard any encyclopedia (online or offline) as something which
should be as unbiased as possible, and writing something about your

own commercial product could not be regarded as this ... that's how
I feel about it.

Please do not regard this as criticism to anybody who does so (Rich,
for example, is doing a great job and I cannot imagine how much time
it takes him), but I would rather NOT do it for the products I sell.

It would, however, not worry me, for non-commercial products, as you
do not (really) want to compete, so I would not regard this as
advertising.

Hi Rich,

Believe it or not, there is still a burgeoning market out there for
retro computers - I rely on them for my main source of income at the
moment (since I was made redundant in December) and have successfully
brought several new products to market (or made old ones available
again), and all this helps.
I understand this, although I did not sell any old hardware in the past
few years,
but that was never my aim anyway. When QPC came out and the QL hardware
emulator ended, there was no point in me elling hardware.

Over the past few years, we have sourced and brought to market:

Yes, you are doing a very good job.
That is why I forward interested people to you, by the way ;-)

2. The internet may be aimed at providing information, but 99% of sites
(including wikis) are used for promotion of business - after all, not
many people can afford to set up and maintain a website longterm without
it providing some source of revenue. If someone is interested in
reading about QPC2 for example, why leave it open ended as to where they
can now obtain a copy from ? That is like telling someone about a
wonderful product which will change their lives immensely, but if they
want to get hold of it, sorry - just look on google and see if anyone
else has listed it for sale...

Please see other mail. Advertising is advertising, and a lot of internet
info IS advertising. A Wikipedia (which I regard as some kind of
Lexikon where you look up things and they are explained, but in an

unbiased, non-advertising way) is something different in my opinion.
THAT is a place where I do not expect (and do not want!!) advertising.

It is OK to use a website, where it is clear one wants to sell
something, for advertising, and advertise by being found through google
etc. ... but that's something different.

Even a link or something like (taken from J-M-S webseite to SHOW it
could be advertising) is something different.

an Atari ST emulator (such as Gemulator -

Calamus has an INBUILT ST Emulator, otherwise it wouldn't work on a PC.

And of course, both Norman and I tried pdf printer driver (but that was
explained earlier in the thread somewhere).

Hi Tobias,

Per, all,
Even if I personally prefer any printed matter to .PDFs, (There's simply
places you won't take your computer for reading...), another word on that:
Me too - and that was the essence from our readers when we did the
survey some years ago.
An electronic version should not replace the paper version completely,
otherwise we would have too many unhappy readers. It could only be an
additional feature.

if I recall it right (It's been years since I have last used Calamus)
the in-built PS driver did _not_ do the RIPping, but instead relied on
Calamus to send already pixelized data - I'm afraid we'd (again) end up
with huge, unsearchable bitmaps, something wich is barely an improvement
upon simple scanning.

This is what I keep saying.

Opposed to that (also from limited memory) Bridge Pro, went in /before/
the actual image processing and should be able to export much smaller,
and also searchable files.

A bit of searching reveals _this_ (German, unfortunately):

http://www.calamus.net/modules/bri.php
(It's not free, but Jochen mentioned he'd be willing to support the
maintenance of that software... ;-) Ideally, he'd find some other
supporters in the QL Toady audience, I guess)

Thanks. We found this already.
No, it is not free ... and there is no demo, unfortunately. Bridge lite
is part of the delivery, but I cannot test the pdf there. PDF is only
available in the full version. Let's see if we find supporters...

Morning Norman,

Well, I couldn't offer support for the bridge as (a) the description of
it was all in German which I cannot read (I'm afraid and ashamed to say)
or understand.

Well, I don't think Tobias was referring to this kind of support.
As we know (and your German was good enough to figure all this out :-)
there is no test version.

Indeed again. And it is pretty sad to see that Urs' effort did not get
feedback either... and it dates back about 2 weeks already.

I gave feedback! Honest, I did! At least, I'm sure I did! (Note to self,
check the archives!)
Oh, I checked this before I wrote it (as I did not remember a reply) and
I cannot find anything in this thread after Urs' message, 14th of Oct.
But I guess Urs, you and Wolfgang did not really count as we were on the
active side, not the demanding side ;-)

In fact, I gave the feedback that Urs had produces a nice bitmapped PDF
which I was able to extract text from and create a smaller (ie a few
pages rather than the whole of issue 1) PDF where the text was text and
not an image. Which I thought was the problem - Calamus creates
bitmapped PDFs which are huge and we really need text based ones which
are much smaller.

Yes, they are way too huge - they should be text-based AND smaller.
And the only possible solution seems to be the Bridge Module (back in
the circle).

Just this quick reply, then I'm out for this week - extremely busy
(taxes 2009 have to be finished by Sunday).

Good luck. I've not long finished mine for end of year. Just got my

Visitors to www.dilwyn.me.uk are sometimes (seemingly randomly)
redirected to the webring hub, which is hugely annoying for
visitors who do not want to use the webring.

I searched their forum and asked for help, but got what amounted to
a standard reply saying that rthey are unaware of any issues,
despite at least 2 others stating that this happens with their

Anyone else have experience fo this and how to fix it?

Ah yes - I had this issue accessing your site as well only last week.
Thought it was me!
No idea though what causes it.
I did though use a Google search result. Maybe Google sometimes
lists the webring link rather than your site.

Tony

I have had this issue with the rwapsoftware.co.uk - I could not find
out what was doing it either - it looks as though someone has hacked
the webring code to redirect browsers to their website when it
appears as either the next one in the ring (or other ring link)

In the end I removed the code.

The notion of hacking occurred to me too, but it only ever redirects to
the Quantum Webring hub in the tests I've done anyway.

It also happened to me too when I tried to visit your site - I saw your
site quickly but I ended on the hub a few seconds later. And even more
annoying, there is no back navigation to the previous site, i.e. your
site.

Could it be that the disk is a DVD- or a DVD+ and the one drive cannot
read that format? Always a pain with DVD s!

Mine has also arrived and works - many thanks for this!

:-) Fine.

Yes, especially with RWs ... I did some tests some years ago and most
DVD-RWs were not readable on other systems, so I gave up on them.
DVD-RAM were and are very reliable, and much more flexible.

You may be right, but for non-rewritables, I thought that this + and -
issue should be history ... as all drives were able to read both for
many years now.

It must be a VERY old system if it handles only one type of DVD.

Hi Adrian,

No problems here. My congratulations to all involved. A great piece of
work!

Thanks.

As I know from experience, you can never be certain that every disk is going
to be readable by every drive. Even if you verify each disk after burning,
some read problems are almost inevitable. And the very act of printing on
the disks might introduce a miniscule rotational imbalance that makes the
disk borderline on certain makes of drive.
I guess the post can do more damage to a disk than printing (here is no
pressure involved). Or do you refer to weight of the ink ;-)

+R/-R shouldn't be an issue these days, but still, some drives are better at
reading one format than another. My personal preference is +R.
I don't even know if it was a +R or -R ... as written in the magazine
and the one before,

I've never created such a DVD.

Anyway, nice work.

Subject: [Ql-Users] Huge Sinclair repository on DVD out now!

This summer I volunteered to work on a Sinclair related retro computing DVD
which is out now. The DVD holds searchable PDFs of all issues (15 years,
1996-2011) of QL Today magazine, plus as Bonus Material seven software,
documentation and picture collections which were previously only available
on CD-ROMs or on web picture galleries. Plus there's a copy (mirror) of the
biggest QL related website. All in all gigabytes of information for you to
discover.

Even though the Sinclair QL is the main topic, both the QL Today magazine
and the Bonus Material cover other Sinclair (ZX) and Retro Computing aspects
as well. Articles by Rick Dickinson (Sinclair Research Ltd. Industrial
Designer January 1980 - April 1987), Tony Tebby (Sinclair Research Ltd.
System Software Designer 1982-1984, author of Qdos), Simon N Goodwin
(remember his many articles in the 80s computer magazines and software like
the ZIP-compiler for the ZX Spectrum) are just a few hot-spots to name here.

The DVD is only available together with a one year subscription of the
current volume (4 issues) of the QL Today magazine. The QL Today DVD 2011
and the first issue of volume 16 are ready to ship now
(http://smsq.j-m-s.com/). For more information and subscription information
please visit the magazine's website (http://www.qltoday.com/). There's a
sample issue available as PDF for you to download and try.

Equally huge thanks are due to everyone who scanned, collated and edited
the DVD contents - thanks everyone.

From me too, again.

I for one, appreciate the hard work and effort involved. We sometimes

the SHIPPING was scheduled mid of Dec so many of you received it earlier
than the shipping date :-)

I remember complaints from some countries last year and the year before
that the post took 2 or 3 weeks to arrive (but then it was shipped
closer to Xmas).

Normally I avoid maximum length filenames but I repeated your experiment
on my QPC2 (in 16 bit colour mode) with QD (vB01) and an ASCII test file.
A maximum name with a 3 character extension produced 'dark grey' text, to
be precise, a black and white stipple type zero.
A maximum name with a 4 character extension produced 'pink' text, a red
and white stipple type 3.
Although the white may have been the light grey background my QD normally
uses.
Loading another file in the same QD kept the grey or pink colour intact.
The resulting colours may be depending on the QD configuration or your
theme setting.

Furthermore I could not load the file into QD with FileInfo2, which I
often use to look at any type of file, QD was started but the text was not
loaded and QD reported 'no name' so normal Load from QD was used instead.
It seems to be another QD feature because executing the text into
VIEW_FILE from FI2 worked OK.

Renaming the file to 35 characters made the FI2/QD combination behave
normal again.

[Ql-Users] Plans for QL2013

2012-11-18 Thread Jochen Merz

Plans for QL 2013

It seems that the article in the last issue of QL Today has triggered
something for next year.

The venue this time will be Hamburg ... a nice city and worth visiting,
if you have not been there yet. And if you have, worth another visit
too... as the address will be Reeperbahn 1 (famous!) - the entry to
St. Pauli.

Rainer Wolkwitz offered a conference room for the meeting for up to 200
people in den Tanzenden Türmen/STRABAG ... and he says it will have a
beautiful view over Hamburg and its port (only 10 minutes walking
distance from there). The towers are quite interesting to look at,
especially if you stay in front of them. Here, for example, are some
pictures:

http://www.strabag-real-estate.com/databases/internet/_public/content.nsf/web/DE-STRABAGREAL.COM-PROJEKTE-B%C3%9CRO-Tanzende%20T%C3%BCrme,%20Hamburg#?men1=2men2=undefinedsid=232h=2

We thought that the date for the meeting should avoid the holiday season
and major events in Hamburg, to increase chances for reasonable hotel rates.
We found that the following dates are probably the best ones, chances
for good weather, chances for less traffic, chances for affordable hotels:

a) Weekend 18th/19th of May
b) Weekend 25th/26th of May
c) Weekend 1st/2nd of June
d) Weekend 31st of August/1st of September

So, we should start working out which date suites most of you best, and
if you prefer the Saturday or the Sunday to be the meeting date.

Assuming, that a visit to Hamburg will not just be for a QL meeting,
other activities like siteseeing or shopping can easily be placed around the
meeting. A note for visitors from outside Germany: shops are closed on
Sunday,
but there are loads of other things to do, e.g. like visiting the
harbour and various ships, or cruise through the harbour, musicals, Zoo
Hagenbeck, all sorts of museums or the famous Miniatur Wunderland (the
world's largest miniature train exhibition).

Please let us know if there is any interest, and what would be your
preferred date and day ... please send an email to s...@j-m-s.com,
subject QL2013
and the letters for your TWO preferred dates (a,b,c,d) and whether you
prefer Saturday or Sunday, or no preference.

Also, help would be most welcome - Rainer said he does not have too much
time to care for other things like hotels. He can provide technical
equipment which could be required for talks or demonstrations (hint,
hint!), like a large screen or projector and internet, of course.

Please reply a.s.a.p. so that we can start working on the details. For
dates in May, only half a year is left, which is 2 issues of QL Today in
between for a poll of the preferred date and advertising for the event.
We may not be able to fill the room with 200 people, but after having
had several meetings in the South, this is very North and a chance to
meet people we have not seen for many years!

And - Hamburg is worth visiting and seeing anyway!

Best regardsJochen

The back issues page has nothing more recent than Volume 13 - which
could mean that there are no more recent copies of course!

The cover discs page has nothing after Volume 12. I know that there was

The index page stops at Volume 15.

There is one show on the show page, Vienna, June 2012.

I'm sure that there are more web sites that could be added to the links

Re: [Ql-Users] QL Today

Yes - small packet.
However the price difference in Europe is not high.

Small packet is anything up to 2kg. No steps. Costs 8,20 EUR ...
not an optional at all.

I reckon though the main reason must be writers, and production time/cost.

And the always decreasing number of readers - time was unpaid, anyway.

I suspect most readers would be prepared to pay extra postage.

No, adding 8 or 10 EUR will be an increase we never had before ... and
we lost many readers when there were smaller increases.

Also, direct debit will have to be re-done for German readers
thanks to new EU rules - they will have to send a signed mandate
back - which will lead to losses in readership again.

Anyway, let's see if something new comes out of all this - maybe it's
a chance.

Yes, very true.

I have also to say writing for QLToday spured me on to write my hardware

it goes on and it never gets done.

explained the situation about this issue 4 being the last issue in

And why would you want to get the previous 3 issues again (as I wrote

Hi folks,

just wanted to report that the next issue of QL Today is under
preparation. It will have 48 pages and will come again with a bonus DVD.
Urs König is preparing the DVD and he reported it to be full.
All issues of QL Today (including the next one itself) will be on the
DVD in digital form and - a surprise: QPC2 Version 4 will be on the DVD
- thanks to Marcel Kilgus in full version. Plus loads of other material
- Urs was quite busy.

I have reduced the subscription rate on http://smsq.j-m-s.com -
if you don't want to miss issue 4, then you can still subscribe
to the current volume and get all 4 issues in one go as soon as it is
ready.

Please note that the latest date to place your order is the 30st of
August - I need to know the total print run by then.
I will not be able to produce any re-prints as I used to do this
in the past at the time of the next issue print, but as we will not
have a next issue, it will not be feasible (costs are too high).

I am very glad that we finished this volume properly with a positive
big bang issue and not finish half-way or disappear like several other
projects in the past did. It has been a great time and I want to thank
everybody who helped in the past 17 years - editors, authors and readers!

So don't miss the very final issue! Who knows, it may well be a
collector's item in some years - and one thing is for sure: there
won't be many!

Jochen

ps: the end of QL Today does not mean that I give up the QL!
And if you like to use QPC, you may find that QPCPrint is something you
need as well :-) Available from J-M-S, of course!

[Ql-Users] QL Today + DVD order deadline

2013-08-31 Thread Jochen Merz
It's me again ... as my printer will start printing the issues on
Monday, there's still today and tomorrow, the 1st of September, to place
the order (I initially wrote 30th of August).

The DVD looks great - and Marcel has added some long-missing features to
QPC Version 4! I will start burning DVDs tomorrow and hope to have
everything ready in time ... it will take many days, if not weeks,

as the DVD is full and I do not burn them at highest speed, as this
will decrease potential reading problems on some DVD drives (learned
from the first DVD two volumes ago).

A great issue with a great bonus - thanks to everybody who helped!!

Re: [Ql-Users] Arrival of Final QL Today + DVD

2013-09-12 Thread Jochen Merz

Hi Bob,

thanks for the quick report and the compliments.

Yes, the Dutch issues went to the post earliest in Holland.
The German issues and the US issues went to the post yesterday.
All other issues will be shipped early next week from Austria
(airmail to all destiantions outside of Austria).

I have to split it this way to get the best postage for every
destination - 48pages plus DVD went way over the budget, especially as
Deutsche Post removed the InfoBrief service surprisingly early this
year and the subscription price (summer 2012) did not cover it at all -
but I thought that it would be great to end everything with a great issue!

I have printed a few extra issues so whoever wants it can still order it
here: http://smsq.j-m-s.com/

Five or six sets are left over, as far as I am aware.

Best regards Jochen

My final (for the foreseeable future) QL Today arrived this morning.
I'm exploring the DVD. I've got both QPC2 and SMSQmlator (Java7 on Vista)
running. SMSQmulator runs fine directly from the DVD but not much use with
read-only filesystem. I copied all the files from DVD to a folder and ran it
from there but keep getting this message: Can't read SMSQ/E file! :
java.io.IOException: The process cannot access the file because another
process has locked a portion of the file.

I'm launching it by opening the folder and double-clicing the .jar file. The
error happens even if I restart the computer and it is the first thing I
run.

No problems with QPC2 but the best display quality results in a tiny QL
window within the QPC window - I can scale it up by setting the bottom
resolution (under 'Window mode' checkbox) higher than that of the top
resolution, but this usually results in a reduction in quality.

Good fun playing, but I must drag myself away to tidy up and get dinner
started before wife comes home from work and I go out to mine!

[Ql-Users] QL Today + DVD - even more re-prints (but that's the last chance)!

2013-11-11 Thread Jochen Merz
Just a quick info: I got more inquiries over the weekend for more
re-prints. I am very glad to see there is so much interest in the

QL, in QL Today and QPC etc. ... I guess we all can take this as
a kind of compliment.

I don't want to turn anybody down, but this time it will be the final
re-print ... definitely. So please spread the word wherever you can:
if there's interest in QL Today Volume 17 (all 4 issues) together with
the Bonus DVD including FREE FULL QPC2 V4, then it is time to order NOW!

As all the previous re-prints are gone, I will do a (really)
final print-run. I have enabled orders for the next week:

I will collect orders, have the issues printed next week and ship
everything the following week.

I re-printed twice for interested people who read it late or through
other sources. I printed a few extra ones (Rich Mellor suggested to
print a few more, which I did in the end) which can still be ordered,

and once those are gone that'll be it from my side regarding QL Today

I also had problems sleeping on Friday night due to the noise from the
heating system (I had left my window open all evening so the
 temperature itself was okay).

Saturday night wasn't so bad, which probably had something to do with
getting to bed late after consuming plenty of Guinness and red wine
 before/during/after the evening meal!
Indeed - there was a heating problem.

Other than that, I had a great time.
Yes.

 Two comments:

 1) We could have done with more space in the main room on Saturday.
Yes. It would have helped if the air in the room had been a bit better
too, but that was probably also down to the heating/failing climate
control.

Although it was said that on Saturday, 42 visitors were present,
it looked a bit empty due to the talks.
Maybe it was also that I missed some of the usual visitors from
abroad ... I think except for Marcel and myself, there was no one
from abroad (Germany, Switzerland, Ireland etc)

Even so, I met new faces to names which I had not met during the 20
years in the past :-)

Cheers Jochen

Re: [ql-users] Quill Makeover

2005-11-08 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
It was publicly available, not just for Quanta members.
In fact, Erling Jacobsen and Gunther Strube wrote in the readme file

We hope that you will enjoy XCHANGE - and - it is YOUR
responsibility to distribute XCHANGE to every QL user you
know!

The full archives were available on the JMS BBS and can now be
obtained on the BBS-CD I offered some time ago in QL Today,
at the time the BBS was shut down.

Re: [ql-users] screenshoots

2006-01-02 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
I have the impression Tesco.net's spamfilter is not properly working ...
My mails to other tesco.net users bounced back,
correctly written, but tesco.net reported wrong errors.

I tried sending from different SMTPs which were not blacklisted
(at least not in public databases).

If you were using an account from 11, for example, you may
find that many mails bounced as the IP of the main SMTP of 11
and many neighbourhood IPs were blacklisted in various
public lists, including Spamcop (for several days until yesterday).

Re: [ql-users] Printing with QPCprint via XChange

2006-01-05 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
Maybe you should try fiddling with the Extended properties of the
printer, e.g. disable the spooler and send contents directly to the
printer.

I had to do this to connect an EPSON POS printer, program it via QPC
and get immediate reaction on every byte sent to the printer.

I have tried to print in XChange Archive via QPCprint. Unfortunately,
XChange seems to let the PAR port open after the first lprint. So,
 nothing
happens (here!) until Archive is abandonned. Then, QPCprint poped up but
there were just a few lines every page, but this could be a problem with
 the
 used archive program.

 Any idea, to print continously?

 Cheers...Ralf R.

I've been having much the same problem Ralf with Archive, some? output gets
sent to Windows spooler but gets no further. same goes for printing from
 Sbasic
It used to work ok with Windows 98, I now have Windows XP, I'm wondering if
 this is the cause.

Re: [ql-users] Printing with QPCprint via XChange

2006-01-05 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
Hi Bill,

no, confusion. Ralf asked about programming, not the Windows settings.

I referred to the Windows settings. Try right-clicking the printer,
properties, Advanced or Extended or whatever (I can't tell, I've
got a German Windows) and there you can disable the spooling.
Nothing to do with programming. I just MENTIONED that *I* had to
do this to get my ESC/POS printer working, i.e. reacting on every byte
sent without having to open and close the port all the time.

Cheers Jochen

 Hi Ralf,

do you have printers which you program in ESC/POS?
It is a language similar to ESC/P2, very much reduced
in many ways, and extended to handle small forms,
forward and reverse feed, turning the print direction in 90
degrees steps, paper cut commands and much more ...
provided you have an (EPSON) POS printer.

 Cheers Jochen

Don't think so Jochen, cant remember anything in the handbook to that
 effect.
I do have another printer that I was given that I intend to try it is an
Epson 1200 (wide carriage ) I will have a look in the handbook of that one
tommorow although the handbook are not extensive to say the least.

To be PRECISE, DP holds (or held, or whatever the situation might be)
the right to sell the ENGLISH version of QMON.
The agreement version with TT was that I can continue selling
QMON/JMON with German manuals, and do upgrades from QMON to JMON
for both languages.

A QJump program owned by Freddy?

Anyway, I have no intentions of releasing it in any way, there's
probably less than a handful of people that could have a use for it. I
myself only use it to debug the core and screen drivers (and even
there I've managed to do that for 8 years without it! I've created
this only fairly recently). Everything else I do with jmon.

Much more exciting would be a functional smon, but it'd need a hell
lot more work before it'd be finished.

That was too clever by far.

I don't think we choose where we live by street names (8-)#
I didn't realise winkel was corner, or indeed the meaning of his surname.
March translates to März, not Merz!

The name Merz comes from Merzeler... which was a name for small

[ql-users] Eindhoven and Byfleet

2006-10-13 Thread SMSQ - Jochen Merz
Hi everybody,

just wanted to say that I'll be at the Eindhoven QL meeting tomorrow,
Saturday - same venue as always (St. Joris College, Eindhoven, NL).
Will bring the usual range, but if you want anything special please
let me know today.

QL Today will hopefully be ready for Byfleet. I had a bad cold last
week, and headache/migrane often 4 or 5 days in a week (including
today), therefore I am behind the planned schedule.
Will try to do my best, as always.

Now the bad news: I was planning to come to Byfleet together with
Bernd Reinhardt. Bernd told me yesterday that he can't make it...
he's got the workers in his house (new pipes, new bathrooms for
him and the flats he rents out) and the schedule here is way
behind schedule, he said. Missing parts are supposed to arrive
any time in the next two, three weeks - so he has to be present
and definitely can't be away for that long weekend.
I may have mentioned it before, with my current health situation,
travelling long distances on my own is impossible.

I am very, very sorry having to say that ... and we both hope to
be able to make it to Hove and/or Byfleet next year.
Sorry Ken, sorry John (can't bring the items as discussed ... if you
think it makes sense to ship them, I'll find out about postage),
sorry to everybody coming to the show and expecting me to be there.
Fortunately, you can get all of the JMS products from Roy.

All the best, see you either at Eindhoven tomorrow or hopefully
next year,

Jochen

Yes, please ask about postage and let me know - if I get these items from
