Does the K3 come with the Anderson power poles already installed or at
least in the kit?

Tnx

[Elecraft] K3 power cable

2008-03-17 Thread cx7tt

Hey Guys,
Tnx for the quick response...I have no problem with soldering as I did
build a K2 a few years ago...My just delivered K3 is sitting at a
friend's house in FL and I will be there this Friday evening. My friend
does not use power poles so wanted to know if I would be able to set up
and play with my new 'toy' during the weekend...Hooray...seems that I
will; leave Monday nite for CX land and so will have it on the air by
end of week...at least into vertical dipole or such.

Tnx for all the positive comments and c u on the air with #250.

[Elecraft] K3 MOJO...

2008-03-25 Thread cx7tt
K3 #250 arrived after I had requested a delay due to my being away from
QTH until this past ThursdayQuickly got all set up and plug into 40m
dipole at friend's house in FL. Using club call W4YY, 1st qso was
barefoot to E74IW which is new ITU prefix assigned to previous T9...had
great fun playing with differnt knobs and referencing the manualnext
morning, up early and got T80W also on 40cw...heard him say qsy to 60m
channel and lo and behold, I could hear him calling CQ USA, wow! Never
heard dx on 60m before...unfortunately, rig did not come with ordered
ATU so not able to attempt qso. BARG rtty contest was on so waaay cool
to see the print out via TEXT DEC. Mostly used the speaker which sounded
'strong'; did notice some distortion when very loud signals were
blasting thru but fixed when turned down the volumne. Friend had Heil
ProSet headphones and noticed significant reduction in volume when those
were plugged in...had to really crank up the AF to get decent
copy...must be very different impedance? All together, very satisfying
experience. Would still like to see some sort of primer on the
operating of the shift-lo-cut-hi-width knobs. Be great to hear from
those who have tinkered with different settings and can recommend
different configs for different condx, i.e., 160m weak sig, cw contest,
ssb contest and general ragchew...(N6XI, W4ZV, you guys have some
suggestions?)
Now, back in CX land so will be on in WPX ssb this weekend, barefoot to
vertical dipoles and centerfed zepp/ladderline. Big test will be in May
WPX cw contest with amp/tower and 3 ele Steppir.

[Elecraft] K3 w/microHam w/HRD?

2008-04-25 Thread cx7tt

Hola,
Need some help setting up the K3 with microKeyer and HRD. I have the K3
cable (from microHam) going to the MK and then have the Mic cable going
to the mic input on the laptop; the soundcard 'out' on the MK goes to
the headphone jack on the laptop. I have the Com ports configured
according to the MK guide. Com 1 = K3; Com 2=FSK (ptt checked); Com4=CW;
Com5=Control (for Win-Test); Com 7= Winkey; Com 8= PTT. I have tested
this configuration and it works FB with N1MM and WinTest on SSB and CW.
For everyday use and logging, I use HRD. HRD recognizes the K3 with freq
readouts and seems to work OK. The problem I have is with the Digital
Master 780. I do not get any signals on the waterfall or monitor. I have
selected the laptop's sound card and still nothing. Even more baffling
is when I 'click' on 'CQ' the computer sends the characters but the K3
only keys up with a steady tone, telling me that the characters are NOT
getting to the K3 even though the PTT has activated xmit. I have tried
using Rtty, BPSK and keyboard CW; none seem to work. I went to the FAQs
and came up with the following for 'No sigs':

No Signals
If you do not see any signals in the waterfall then follow the steps below:

Soundcard
Make sure you have selected the correct soundcard. To select the
soundcard wither:

From the Tools menu select Program Options, then the Soundcard page, or
From the View menu select Soundcard, then press Options.
Make sure the correct soundcard is selected along with the input source.
For some soundcards such as the M-Audio Delta 44 and SignaLink USB you
will not see a Source. Do not worry - if a source is not displayed this
is because there is only one input source and no way of adjusting the
input level, it is fixed.

Set the default sample rate to 48 kHz - if not supported DM780 falls
back to 8 kHz.

Changes are applied immediately, look in the Logfile for any errors. If
the soundcard can be started correctly you will see text similar to:

09:21:35 Sound Thread: *** Start Input ***
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Opening Creative Sound Blaster PCI (device ID 2)
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Frequency .: 48kHz
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Buffer size ...: 24576
09:21:35 Sound Thread: Oversampling ..: On

*/And 'yes' I did get the above Logfile.../.
*

If you see text similar to the above then you have opened the soundcard
for receive. If you still do not see any signals in the waterfall:

Look at the soundcard, identify the input source where you have
connected your interface. This will usually be Line In (it is better the
use Line In rather than Microphone as Line In will have a flat frequency
response).
In the Soundcard pane (select Soundcard from the View menu) select (*)
RX at the bottom of the pane and make sure that the input source is
selected - look at the Select button at the top of the pane - this will
be depressed.
The input source level is adjusted with the slider - make sure this is
not set to zero.
The Signal Level indicator will show a value greater than zero. You
don't need a very strong signal, pretty well anything will do, a value
of just 20 is absolutely fine.
If the input source is selected, the input slider and the signal level
stays at zero then you are not supplying a signal to the soundcard. Try
connecting a microphone or some headphone to the input connector on the
soundcard. If this produces some noise on the waterfall - anything -
then the problem is the interface between the PC and radio.

/*Tried all of this...moving cable from mic on back of MK to Soundcard
IN. Still no signals nor xmit, other than keying the K3 in RTTY or BPSK.*/

I do not think there is anything wrong with the MK as I used it
previously with O II and MMTTY. I have spent about 6 hours fussing with
this and going on line to read HRD/MK guides and K3 manual.

Is there any suggestions on what maybe I have missed?

Tnx 73

[Elecraft] K3/HRD/MK...success

2008-04-27 Thread cx7tt
Tnx to Greg AB7R and Joe W4TV for helping me troubleshoot and finally
get it all going. The problem was, of course, methe cable bundle
that goes to the back of the K3 has a cable marked PC IN and PC Out. I
assumed that they went into the respective IN-Line-OUT jacks on the back
of the K3wrong...after swapping those cables everything works ok.
While testing ...sending CQ in BPSK-31 on quiet band, I made my first
ever contact in that mode...very cool, I think I will like this BPSK
thing. 50 watts to a vertical here in CX worked a 15w dipole in Tampa,
FL. Another thing that I must have missed in the documentation on the
DM780 is that it does NOT support FSK or BPSK-D. So must use AFSK-D or
Data...
Once again, the Elecraft reflector came thru...tnx guys.

[Elecraft] K3 Heavy hum after Upgrade

2008-05-06 Thread cx7tt

Hello,
I did the 1.87 upgrade and today did the 1.88. I did not work any ssb
after doing 1.87 but today saw some posts concerning ssb output to drive
amps, etc. Sooo, I decided to check it out and found that I have heavy
hum on the keying of my MH2. I am set for FP.L with biasI initially
had the microHam MKset up with MH2 going into the back of the MK (has
several snap on chokes from my O II days) and when keying the mike I
without saying anything, I get heavy hum and 8 bars of ALC; CMP flickers
with about 4 to 5 bars...MIC is set at 20 and CMP at 20 (worked ok in
the past). With CMP at 0, I still get 7 bars of ALC just by keying the
MH2. I can hear the hum when the MIC is anything above 3. I took the MK
out of the circuit...disconnected from computer and exited the
routerMH2 is plugged directly into front panel and all previous
problems still exist...Suggestions?

Is there a way to re-load 1.87 or even 1.86?

[Elecraft] K3 60m setup?

2008-05-09 Thread cx7tt
While playing with my K3, I selected 5.0 mHZ for WWV using manual Freq
ENT. When I then changed bands with the rocker switch the bands would go
from 80m to 5.0 to 40m. I vaguely remember seeing one of the 60m freq
5403.5 when I first fired up the rig back in March. Did I inadvertently
erase the 60m channels or were they never there? I looked thru the
manual but could only find on page 37 how to set up Channel Hopping. Are
programmed memory freqs how we access 60m?
I then manually programmed the 60m freq into Memory 1-5 and included the
* for channel hopping...however, the MV did not work to save the
freq..so then I went to page 16 and programmed the memories via VM. So
now I have the 5 60m freq in memories 1 thru 5. When I try to start
scanning (Channel hopping) by holding 'Scan', I get Set A/B on the
lower LCD. I tried to put 5330.5 in A and 5403.5 in B and press 'SCAN'.
Then it said MV req. I set memory 1 to 5330.5 and B vfo was 5403.5..So
I followed the instructions of MV and set #1 memory and tried 'SCAN'
agn...this time the B vfo defaulted to 5.000 mHZok, I give up...what
am I missing?

[Elecraft] WPX K3 impressions..

2008-05-28 Thread cx7tt
WPX contest with K3/Acom 1000 and 3 ele Steppir @ 40ft.a lot of fun
although condx were pretty poor here in the 'southern cone' for a little
pistol station. Mi amigo, CX6VM aka CW5W, did very FB job from his nice
contest station about 400km from here. I listened to his pileup several
times and he was working Qs that were ESP here...but then he has tall
towers and big iron...Congrats, Jorge.
The K3 was a pleasure to operate in this contest. I generally did SP as
I could not get anything going with Cqing...the exception was Sat
afternoon when had very nice EU pileup on 10m then later 15m. About the
RIT...I dont particularly care for using the RIT when running a
pileup...my preference is work split. The K3 was very easy to do this
with: AB, Split, then call CQ...that way I can use the big knob to fine
tune the callers which are off frequency (happens a lot).

My request for firmware change is to have a method to Lock VFO B so I
dont 'bump' the knob and lose my pileup. How about when Split
activated, Lock applies to VFO B?

A tip of the cap to Windy, KM5Q (I think it was you) who suggested
using CWT to fine tune the RF gain control...worked super! Major
'Ah-Ha'. There were times when PRE not needed at all and others when PRE
with RF gain backed off made the difference in working guys or not.

No AGC issue here with strong stations as the 1 skip zone falls in PY
land...the very few Monster stations were easily taken out with the
DSP...I have the 1.8, 500 and 250 roofing filters.

Finally, I also have a Orion II and can do A/B test between the two
rigscw is not even close...although the O II is a fine rig, there is
an annoying hiss which is much louder than the background noise of the
K3; have to almost constantly move the RFGain control to stay on top of
that with the O IIthe NR is STILL a work in progress w/TenTec...way
too much distortion at even a 2 rating. With the K3, I never use NR on
cw as the DSP does FB job. The O II is fatiguing to listen too compared
to the K3. OTOH, I do like the SSB sound of the O II better...it seems
much 'fuller' than the K3. Not that important to me as I do not do much
SSB. I probably need to delve into the K3 RX equal settings and play
with that...anybody got recommended RX settings for SSB?

[Elecraft] K3 Impressions...Locking VFO B for split ops

2008-05-28 Thread cx7tt
Many tnx to Tom, N0SS for guidance on how to setup the split ops and
locking VFO B.

Here goes:

A B; hold SPLIT; hold B SET; hold LOCK; hold B SET to return upper
display to VFO A.

Now VFO A can be used as big boy RIT without bumping (moving) xmit freq.

If QRM drives you to another freq, just move VFO A to clear freq and hit
A B and VFO B follows while still being locked...this works if you
even QSY to another band...pretty neat...

To return to normal ops: hold B SET, hold LOCK, B SET, hold SPLIT.

[Elecraft] K3/100 ERR 12V?

2009-09-27 Thread cx7tt
Aptos, I have a problem:

I have been working the RTTY contest this weekend and everything has
been working smoothly. 700+ Qs in 13 hours.
This morning after being on the air for about one hour and running a
pileup the rig stopped keying and I got a ERR 12V msg.
Here is the setup:
K3/100 w/55w to Acom 1000, output 600w.
Interface is microHAM mK II.
Software N1MM
Antenna is Steppir, swr below 1.2 on 15m and 20m.

I have tried a different power supply but no change...the voltage on
both fluctuate between 13.9 and 13.3; the PA temps do not seem to matter
as this happens when temps are as high as 40C or low as 25C.
I tried with amp in and out of the line and with different software,
N1MM then WinTest.
When I have the ERR12V msg, the power defaults to 5w and 12w becomes
max...the rig keys ok only after cycling the power off/on; then will key
up to 12 w in cw and rtty.
I have to cycle the power on/off to reset the msg then I can move the
power up to 55w...as soon as I key the rig, the error comes back and
power reduces to 5w and does not key anymore in cw nor rtty.

Gentlemen/ladies, any suggestions?

[Elecraft] K3 fan leads?

2009-10-21 Thread cx7tt
I am putting my K3 back together after having to replace the original
P67B connectors with gold pins after rtty contest smoked the pins last
month. Tnx to Gary S for working with me long distance to figure out the
problem. My K3 , #250 had plated pins vs the newer gold pins...this is a
factory assembled K3 so I was very leery of diving into the guts of the
rig. thankfully Gary walked me thru it and now the final step of putting
lids back on, etc, I am hooking up the fans. I dont remember which goes
to which, or if it even matters...a short lead, red/blue seems to fit
the outboard pins and the longer lead, black/red seem to fit the inboard
male connectors. Before I give it the smoke test, do I need to correct this?
Finally, on the power leads to the 20A fuse...I have outmost going to
top connector and innermost going to bottom connector of circuit
breaker. Not sure if it makes a difference but at this point, just b4
ssb contest, dont want to make bonehead mistake.

Doug, I was very happy to read you analysis of the K3 radio. I have mine on

Heartily agree Bob; I have K3#250 and being an impatient type, I simply plugged
it in and operatedused the manual a few times for 'I wonder what that
does?'
Also would have epiphany while reading the forum messages, kinda like 'wow,
that's great' and discover a new feature. I made the progression from
FT1000D/MP756 Pro IIOrion II (which I still have as backup) and K3/100. Each
radio was better than last and a great deal of fun. Looking fwd to operating
the cq ww cw with the K3; the only problem is with the tight roofing filters;
what I think is a clear freq is probably too close to lesser rigs' tolerance,

[Elecraft] K3 PSK31 split freq?

2009-12-06 Thread cx7tt
Hello, using K3 #250 here with 3.63 firmware, etc. Today there was a
V5/DJ on 17m on PSK31. He was calling CQ and listening up. When I tried
to go split I got a SPL N/A. I vaguely remember someone recently
having same issue and I went to the K3 wiki to do a search but could not
find anything. The K3 will do split for AFSK, FSK and Data A. The manual
does not mention this, at least not on p36 under SPLIT/Cross mode ops
nor on page 31 DATA modes. Any way to do split mode in PSK?
What am I missing? Tnx

[Elecraft] K3 Carrying case

Jorge, et al;

I find the best case for carrying K2s, K3, etc is a pilot flight bag.
These are designed to carry the Jeppesen Approach plates, aircraft
operating manuals, etc and are totally accepted by the airlines/security
folks. They see them ALL the time. My bag's dimensions are 18L x 10W x
14H, excluding the handle. It has built in combination locks on each
toggle opener and built in telescoping handle. The bags are also known
as 'chart cases'. Dont get the soft sided cloth bags but rather the
vinyl with metal reinforcements. Leather bags are nice but expensive. I
also use the typical rollaboard suitcase with carrying hook...You see
these everywhere in the airports as both pilots and flight attendants
use them. Pilots hang the flight bag from the hook as they pull their
gear through the airports. The K2/K3 will also fit nicely in the
rollaboard but one must make sure that you will not be flying on a RJ
(regional jet), like Pluna as rollaboards will not fit under seats nor
in overhead compartments and will be 'gate checked'...the pilot bag,
however will fit under the seat in the RJsThe flight bag will easily
handle the K3 plus a small power supply such as a Samlex 1235M. A
computer style headset and key would also be no problem and I even get
my computer 'netbook' in there also...leaving the rollaboard for coax,
dipole, swim trunks, flip flops, etc, HI.
Hope this helps...all the best in 2010.

P.S. The Pelican cases are nice as are the aluminum sided cases but tend
to call attention to 'something valuable is inside'. Not good for
customs or potential thieves.
Try: www.snomads.com for examples of reasonably priced cases...or ebay...

[Elecraft] [K2] how much harder to build: K2 vs K1?

2009-12-31 Thread cx7tt
Hello LS,
I was in the same stage as you back in 2002 when I ordered the K2 kit
with options. I had not built anything since a SB200 back in early 70s
and do not work in electronics so my technical expertise was (still is)
pretty low.
I was so far behind the 'power curve' that I had to look up the pictures
of the components in the back of the manual to double check that the
component that needed to be installed was actually the one in my hand. I
frequently would put the component on a VOM just to confirm the value. I
took my time and double checked everything. Whenever I hit a mental
snag, the reflector always had a response within a couple of hours...I
think some of the boys never sleep,HI.
As I completed the final stages, I ran out of time and shipped the K2
off to W3FPR for final alignment and he discovered a couple of bad
solder jobs, a few components that were in wrong place, etc. My biggest
worry when I started was that I was wasting money building something
that would never work due to my imcompetence; rest assured that your K2
WILL work; there are waaay too many guys/gals on this reflector who will
assist/guide/mentor you through the process.
I can not tell you how thrilling it was to work a 4X on 80m cw with an
inverted L and to use the K2/100 in contests making many, many QSOs. and
Yes, I did learn a lot.
Best of Luck LS,
73
Tom

P.S. My vote is 'get the K2'.

Re: [Elecraft] qsk options inquiry

2009-08-12 Thread cx7tt
I have the Acom 1000 and use it with the K3/100 (#250)...full QSK, no
problems at all with keying,(up to 44wpm) etc. I got it in 2004. I have
made over 15000 Qs with many of these Qs during contest operations,
phone, cw and rtty. I do crank it back to 500w out when running rtty so
as to run a little cooler. If you like computer controlled amps, this is
a remarkable little amp, very quiet and puts out about 600w or so. It is
NOT a 1000w amp...the specs on the tube the 4CX800 say plate dissipation
is 800w...plug in typical efficiency and that will put it down around
600wto 680wMy LP-100 shows 800w peak and my Bird shows around
600-650w (key dwn) output into Steppir 3 ele yagi. Not sure that anyone
could tell the difference over the air if power was 1000w or 600w.
Not sure about the marketing of the amp now...did Array Solutions or DX
Eng pick up the line in the US?
A recent email to K6ND (US rep) garnered a response from a technician in
LZ land.
All in all, I like the amp and would recommend one to someone in the US
or EU.

[Elecraft] RIT?

2008-07-15 Thread cx7tt

Hi Bud,
I dont like using the RIT when running stations as it is easy for me to
grab the wrong knob...VFO B instead of RIT or, if I forgot to engage the
RIT and promptly QSY myself away from my own pileup! Here is what I do
and it works pretty slick in the contest

AB; Hold B SET; Hold Lock; tap B SET again and now VFO B is locked
OK, so now I start tuning up the band...S P until I find clear
freqcall CQ and if I get an answer...AB; Hold SPLITnow my
transmit freq is locked into VFO B and VFO A becomes RIT...if you see a
packet spot...and click on it to qsy, it drops the split op but VFO B
still locked...work the new guy...back to original run freq and Hold
SPLIT and off I go again with my run freqit worked really slick
during the IARU last weekend where I worked 986 Qs, with slightly more
on SSB than CW...

Hope this works for your style of ops

[Elecraft] K3 KANT3 PCB?

2008-09-24 Thread cx7tt
My K3 was factory assembled last Feb. It just returned from having ATU

correct in assuming that this was 'plucked' from the K3 iot install
either the ATU or KRX3? Inquiring minds, etc?

Take a look at the 9V radio club www.sarts.org.sg and the IARU site at iaru.org

May be over there myself later next year.

I have an opportunity to do a two month work assignment in 9V, Singapore,

Does any one know what the requirements are for foreign nationals to get
operating privileges there?

Thanks,

[Elecraft] PELICAN FOR K3

2007-12-13 Thread cx7tt
I have always tried to keep my radio equipment with me as carry-on; this
keeps the thieves and lost luggage at bay. When I had a 756 Pro, it fit
nicely in my airline roll aboard and the power supply was right beside
it. I could still carry the headset and key so I ALWAYS arrived with
full operating station. Yo Yo antenna and 50 ft of RG8X included. The K3
is smaller than the 756 series so I will continue with this game plan.
The use of Pelican and/or Halliburton just 'screams' out that something
valuable is inside and 'steal me'. another reason I never use
Pelican/Halliburton unless absolutely necessary (Acom 1000) is those
case(s) arouse the curiosity of customs
I have 2 Pelicans, one for Acom 1000 (tough to load on the employee bus
if trying to steal) and a cute little Pelican for the K2 plus
accessories. That one I only use when I put the K2 in storage or when
transporting by car for local operations.

Hopefully you will never experience theft nor lost baggage.

[Elecraft] RE: New concept/tool for CW dxing

2008-02-05 Thread cx7tt

Gentlemen,

I do not think this program is a bad idea and not withstanding comments
from the cw purists, it could actually increase the number and
proficiency of cw operators. When I was just starting out and struggling
with 22 wpm, contesters running at 35+wpm just blew me away. I recall
sitting on their frequencies trying to decipher their SS
exchangemaybe listening to 5 or more Qs to figure out what number,
what Sec, what CK, etc? If a beginner can decipher via software, while
listening, isnt' that a learning experience?
I am an avid cw op, participate in many contests and have been a guest
operator (40m) during CQWWCW at K3LR's super station. Who among us would
not love for more beginners to show up during those sloww
periods on Sunday afternoon? How many times have you hit F1, just
waiting for new blood. If a guy, using the program can work me quickly
using this program, move on to the next, etc, then his/her enjoyment
will also increase and maybe, just maybe, be the impetus to learn,
practice and participate in future cw events.

Ciao,

[Elecraft] K3 AGC Tutorial?

2007-10-13 Thread cx7tt
Hi Gang,
I would like to see a separate tutorial on the use of the DSP/NR/NB and
especially AGC. I have read with interest the thread on this and try to
understand the theory behind all this 'hang', 'decay', 'threshold', etc.
I have an Orion II and was initially baffled by all the complexity of
the settings. What finally worked for me was a section of their manual
which listed typical settings for weak signal work and another for
contesting. One gentleman listed why he wanted certain settings for
different requirements and that was very educational for me. Even though
I built a K2/100 with accessories (tip of the hat to W3FPR for helping
with the heavy lifting) I am basically an appliance operator. A pilot by
profession, I am used to checklists but also value thinking 'outside'
the box. My current large appliance is a B777 so complexity is not
overwhelming. There are so many gifted hams on this reflector that
understand all the nuances of AGC/DSP etc; I would love to have a
tutorial that lays out best settings for QRM/QRN, weak signal work,
contesting, dxing. Not only the settings but the 'why' on the different
hang, decay, threshold times.
What say you?

[Elecraft] K3 SS

2007-11-06 Thread cx7tt
The comments about guys responding off freq reminds me of when I was on
a mini-dxpedition to KH9 back in the early 80s. A friend recorded about
30min of my cw pileup and there was one WB8 who called for at least 20
minutes, with a good signal, who was out of my passband. I learned from
that to try to zero beat and if not getting thru, move around in the
pileup...pretty elementary stuff now but was a 'ahah' back then. I do
like the idea of setting up split with my transmit freq locked into VFO
B and use the big knob rather than the RIT to tune for those guys a
little off freq. The other danger of being off freq is, if I hear you, I
will work you, unfortunately, you may have been working someone I cannot
hear and our contest exchange timing may have been perfect. Later in the
contest, you may show as a worked b4 in my log. Of course the SS
exchange (long) pretty much excludes the quick 5NNA3 of the CQWWCW.

Looking fwd to using the K3, soon.

[Elecraft] SPE/ACOM and other microprocessor type amps

2007-11-23 Thread cx7tt

Hello,
I too have followed the story of SPE and Tokyo Hypower amps with
interest. I have been the owner of an ACOM 1000 for about 3 years now
and had great service until...last Sept, the amp was sitting in
standby mode waiting for 3B7 to show up on 20m; xyl and I watching
news in next room and very loud, KAPOW from shack. I found the 1000
lights flashing and error code in the window. Tried a reset and another
extremely loud pop. I contacted Will at ACOM via Skype and he said to
send him all the lines of error code. There were about 7 lines of such.
Well, it turns out that even with the code, they cannot decipher what
happened and now the amp has to be sent to the US for service. From CX
that means at least $100 in overweight baggage on the airline (amp goes
in pelican case) then Fedex from MIA to factory and back, then another
frequent flyer ride to CX. This is on top on any repair bill. So, now my
favorite amp is my trusty 30L-1 which I can fix myself. If one lives in
the US or has easy (cheap) access to local distributor then I would
certainly take hard look at the SPE, it looks like a real winner, but
for me, no more microprocessor controlled amps. My next one will be
probably be a Command Tech or QRO HF-2500. Just some thoughts from
someone who lives outside the US, aint' easy being dx, huh?

[Elecraft] K3 Ant 1?

2010-11-26 Thread cx7tt
Need help with some troubleshooting...here is the background:
After being gone for a month I returned to find that my iMac would not
boot up, the LP100 display had noticeably dimmed and my Steppir 3 ele
beam had super high SWR on 20m only. Although I had disconnected p/s and
antennas, we had an unusual amount of t-storm activity while gone. I
assumed that static discharges had somehow placed gremlins into my
shack. The local Apple guy was able to get the iMac running with no loss
of data and Larry kindly helped with getting the latest display chips
installed but that left the Steppir...why it worked great on 17-6m and
it was a mystery on 20m with infinite swr across the band, even after
doing the calibrate procedure.
Yesterday I decided to upgrade the software of my Orion II and then
later the K3. After the O II upgrade I connected the Steppir and was
surprised to see that the swr was normal across the 20m band; I then
tried it on the K3, infinite swr...I then tried a dummy load on the k3
and yes, infinite swr but only on 20m. I then moved the dummy load to
Ant 2 and all was fine. I then hooked the Steppir to Ant 2 and
everything is working great.
So, here is the question. If the SO239 was bad at Ant1, why does it work
on all bands except 20m? Unfortunately, this was a factory built unit,
#250, so my knowledge of the insides is very sketchy.
What do I need to look for?

[Elecraft] K3 loss of signals and no xmit

K3 #250 was listening to the 15m ssb VP8ORK pileup and suddenly lost all

it the power I use to key the Acom 1000.
Switched to a different transceiver with same antenna system and all
works ok there.
Any ideas what to look at? Shack temp was around 85degsDISP showed

[Elecraft] K3 setup for N1MM/mK II/RTTY

2011-02-05 Thread cx7tt
If someone has the exact same setup up, I would like to chat w/you off line.
I am having a problem getting the N1MM program to xmit in RTTY and
cw...I have followed the microham guide sheet on setting up the mK II
and N1MM/MMTTY. The program decodes fine but when I transmit, it shows
the wave form and xy axis in idle but does not key the K3.
What is frustrating is that I use Logger 32 as my every day logging
program and it has been working fine with RTTY/and the above config.
Plus I used this same config last year in wpx rtty and it worked fine.
Pse contact me off line if you wish to help.

[Elecraft] S9DX and other dxpedition tips

2011-02-13 Thread cx7tt
Like others, I have used DX summit web site special 'search' tab to
input the dx and see what bands they are on at the present time. This
works best when sitting on the couch waiting for them to show on a
certain band. You will have to hit 'search' again to refresh every so often.

For those who are struggling, even if you have not worked them, go to
their online log, input your call, you wont be there but it will show
your zone. Click on the propagation to that zone and get a pretty good
idea what have been the best times to work them on diff bands. Of
course, in the US, the zones are pretty big but it's a good guide as to
propagation for your area.

Finally, listen, listen to try to discern their operating pattern. I
dont have a P3 (yet) but have found the sub RX to be invaluable.

Best of luck

[Elecraft] W2IHY/K3

2010-01-25 Thread cx7tt
Hello Gordan,
I have the W2IHY connected to my K3 and it does a great job. It is not
necessary, however. I bought the IHY to use with my Orion II and a very
old dynamic microphone, a ElectroVoice EV664. The only reason I use the
IHY with the K3 is that I can just reach behind the IHY and move one
switch and be transmitting with the same mic on either the K3 or the
Orion II. It is simply a matter of convenience, that's all. I have a
very cheap computer gaming headset that I use also with the K3 and it
sounds great...lots of DX/Contesting punch...
Hope this helps...

[Elecraft] K3 No ATU and 12w max

2010-02-06 Thread cx7tt
This morning I turned on K3 #250 and got a ERR AT3 msg which was strange
as when I shut down the radio yesterday, everything was fine. I rarely
use the ATU as I have a Steppir beam and inverted L which I run thru an
external tuner.
I started troubleshooting and went thru the following sequences:
After seeing the ERR AT3, I check the config, it was in BYP.
ATU Tune- No ATU
Config-ATU to auto
ATU Tune-No ATU
Power-OFF/ON
No msg this time
ATU tune- ERR LPF
ATU tune-ERR IO3
ATU tune-ERR IF1
ATU tune-ERR xv3
ATU tune-AT3
ATU tune-ERR PA1
ATU tine- ERR BP3

Xmit/Tune- 12 w max (KPA100 installed)
SWR shows 1.8 on K3 display, LP Pan shows 10.6w and SWR of 1.15 (on
exact Steppir freq of 14.050)
Same with ATU in BYP or Auto
KPA3 in nor

Any ideas/suggestions

[Elecraft] ARRL CW K3 mini split...

2010-02-26 Thread cx7tt
John and Rick et. al,

Rick sez, When I finally had the epiphany that the run station was
listening on the last worked stations freq even if off a few hundred Hz
my rate went way up.

Probably the run stations that were most affected by this were K3
operators since if they had it cranked down to minimum they never heard
me when I was on their freq. Darn K3!

I operated as CW7T in ARRL CW contest and frequently did the
'mini-split'VFO B became xmit and VFO A was my rit. It was easy to
pick off the 'big guns' and guys with kw/beams. The rub is when the
pileup gets down to the 100w/dipole/vertical of which the majority of
contesters depend on these guys to have a good score. One problem is the
packet spoteveryone that clicks on the spot goes to the same
frequency and it becomes almost impossible to get the call signs when
the pitch are nearly identical. I found that by varying my 'rit' from
-130 to +200hz around my xmit freq, it was easy to pick off the call
signs.amazing how many guys got it vs didnt...the clue is how long
is it taking the run station to answer a call...is he snapping off one
callers or getting partial calls/calling QRZ more than once? The key is
'be different' in the pileup...As Rick and John say, open up the BW and
see where the guy is that I just worked, then zero beat himAs for
me, I ran the BW down to 200 or 250hz while doing my mini splitI
worked many guys who were S3 abv and below the run freq while the zero
beat guys to my xmit freq were S9 plus.
And yes, a number of the K3 guys got in my log using this technique (I
recognize a number of the calls from this forum, HI)

Look for all u guys in CW WPX in May...

[Elecraft] K3+P3+MkII+computer?

2012-04-30 Thread cx7tt

Hola,

K3 is connected to the P3 and P3 goes to USB hub on back of computer for
logging program. How do I include the RS232 to the MkII? Does it require
a Y cable for the RS232 or a hub connection like a Belkin? The reason
for the MkII is to allow MTTY and PSK macros and to use keyboard cw keying.

I cant find anything in the P3 documentation nor on the Microham website
under support. Before hooking up the P3, I used the MkII for both
Logger32 and N1MM for contesting.

[Elecraft] K3 pwr cycles back on???

2012-08-06 Thread cx7tt
My K3/100 which is set up with the P3 and then goes to microKeyer II
will turn back on within seconds of pushing the Power switch. I looked
at the nabble posts and tried downloading latest firmwareI was only
off one, 4.48; now 04.51 is installed.

I also disconnected the mK II and removed both the RS232 and ACC plugs
from the back of the K3. I also removed the power cable from the P3.

The rig still cycles back to on within one or two seconds of pushing the
Power button to Off. There has been no changes to the rig setup since
last March when I set up the P3...no local t-storms, etc.

Any ideas?

[Elecraft] K3 JT 65-HF transmit?

2012-09-10 Thread cx7tt
Hello,

I am attempting to get JT-65HF setup with my K3. I have the software V
1.0.9.3 and microHam MK II. I have followed the setup guide from mH and
JT65. The microHam has both SC and Line LEDs lite. The software is
decoding signals properly. When I try to xmit, the rig keys but no
output. I have tried Data A with and without VOX...still keys, but no
output. Is Data A the correct mode or should it be in USB with Vox 'on'?

Tnx for any help rendered...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 JT 65-HF transmit?

2012-09-10 Thread cx7tt
Joe and Matt,

Tnx for the input..

Check the Main menu and Line In was set...changed to rPL and still no
xmit...keys but nothing comes out...went back to Line IN and tried
changing the Line Level from 10 to 30 to 100; still nothing comes out,
although it does keythis is noted by 'SC' Line and PTT2 LEDs lite
when rig keys...

K3 works perfectly with Logger 32 and MMTTY and MMVari for RTTY and PSK.

Checked the settings on mH mK II and the key from rear is selected and
Sound card PTT is unchecked, just like the mK II set up guide directs...

What else do you recommend that I look for?

[Elecraft] K3 JT 65 HF xmit?

2012-09-12 Thread cx7tt
Joe,
See response below:

Tom,

The K3 keeps separate input selections and input gain by mode ...

Make sure the K3 is in DATA A, and while in that mode make sure
Line In is selected and check the input level (mic gain). The
menu Line Level is receive - not transmit.

Yes, am in TX Data and DATA AMain Menu Mic sel = Line IN

When the software JT65-HF goes into xmit, it keys the K3 but no output..I tried
moving the MIC gain from zero to Max with no differences. CMP = 0 which is the
default.

Also make sure you have selected Line Input (rear) for FSK/DIGITAL
in Router's audio switching tab and confirm that you have selected
Headset Earphone (microHAM CODEC) as the Sound Output Device on
the Station Setup tab in the JT65-HF configuration dialog (assuming
you are using JT65-HF and not WSJT).

In mK II, Audio Switching: FSK/Digital= Line input (rear)

Yes, JT65-HF software: Station setup: Sound input device= 02-microHAM CODEC and
Sound Output Device= 05 microHAM CODEC

If you can run PSK31/63 and MFSK with MMVARI there should be no
difference in running JT65-HF.

With MMTTY and MMVARI, I am using 45 bps FSK D or 31 bps PSK D, not DATA A with
either one.

With the mK II I seeSC andLINE LEDs lit; when the software 'keys' the rig...I
see an additional LED,PTT2 is lit.

If I disconnected the mK II by pulling out the USB plug, should I hear 'tones'
from the software when it is in the xmit mode? If so, I hear nothing from the
computer speakers. Tony suggested disconnecting all interfaces and using cables
to/from K3; I only have the 'headphone' jack on the back of the computer so it
appears there is no 'line in'

I do have an O II sitting to the side along with mK; perhaps I should give that
a shot to see if the DATA A xmit function is kaput? Is there a config menu
selection to activate DATA A? What you think?

Tnx
Tom

[Elecraft] K3 JT-65 HF xmit

2012-09-13 Thread cx7tt
Hello Jim,

I tried the first part of your answer but my computer does not show similar
selections (Win XP) under sound/devices; nothing like you describe in the first
two paragraphs.

I have tried both VOX and PTT w/no success.

However, we may have hit on something here with the headphones in computer jack.

After hearing nothing with the microham CODEC selected for both Sound in/out, I
selected Creative Sound Blaster PCI for both input and output..aptly named, it
just about blasted out my ear drums... there was a 3rd choice presented in the
drop down menu which is: Microsoft Sound Mapper input/output.

Also interesting is that originally when selecting CODEC, it showed 02-mK CODEC
and 05-mk CODEC but after selected CSB then reverting to CODEC, it now numbers
them 01-mk CODEC and 04-mK CODECany significance to that?

Ok, so setup the JT65-HF for CSB in/out and on the mK II, selected CSB under
tab Audio MixerI get the tones when software sends, the rig is keyed, but
no power output.

While in this config, i.e., CSB on mK II, went to Audio Mixer tab and selected
'Test signal', I get the toneWhen I select mK CODEC on same tab...no tone
when selecting Test Signal ??? If I go to the K3 DATA A and change to AFSK,
then 'Test Signal', no tone. However if I select either FSK or PSK-D on the K3,
I get the appropriate 'Test Signal on the mK II.

So, I do not know why the CODEC is not producing tones for DATA A or AFSK...Joe?

Tnx again guys...this has me buffaloed...

Look at the Windows PLAYBACK Mixer and see if the stereo Pan pot is
shifted to one side. When I use N1MM to run SO2R for a SSB or RTTY
contest, it moves the Pan pot to one side or the other to send my voice
messages to left or right radio. But it doesn't turn it back to the
center when it stops. This will happen every time you're using N1MM. I
suspect other contest loggers do the same. Also, either Windoze, or
other Windoze programs may be manipulating the Playback Mixer.

Playback Mixer LEVELS may also be the problem. JT65-HF, and other
digital software, uses the WAV input to the mixer, so look at its level,
and also at the MASTER level control. Neither should be all the way up
or all the way down, both should be something like 2/3 up.

The thing I'm puzzling about is that you say you're using VOX and it's
going into transmit, which means you're getting audio into the radio.
OR -- are you using BOTH VOX and PTT? Try VOX ONLY, and see if the
radio transmits. If it does, it's getting audio.

Another idea -- for a test, plug headphones into the computer headphone
jack and see if you hear the JT65 tones when the software is sending.

[Elecraft] K3 PSK split?

2012-12-24 Thread cx7tt

Hola,

E51E was running PSK31 the other day on 17m and was sending 'up' for
split operations...I tried to do this but the rig would not allow split;
yes I had done A=B to get both VFOs in proper mode and then held down
the split buttonmy workaround was to put VFO B up 1 kc, monitor the
P3 for clear freq and toggle A/B back and forth until I worked him.

Is there a config selection I missed or another 'cockpit error' that I

[Elecraft] Digest Vol 106, Issue 3 = Treasure trove

2013-02-03 Thread cx7tt
Although I appreciate the usual FB inputs to the forum, this issue was
singularly spectacular. The discussion on surge protection, for an
appliance operator (my skill set is airplanes), was very instructional
and educational.

The brilliance of PigKnob by N3WG and follow on suggestions opened the
door to a lot of 'what ifs'.

Finally, Ron AC7AC, explanation of using AFV, one of the built in tools
of the K3, for evaluating not only the K3 ATT/Preamp but also comparing
antennas was exceptional.

Well done gentlemen, Bravo Zulu. Just another example of the
professionalism and high level of quality inputs.

[Elecraft] K3 Rcvr front end protected?

2013-03-07 Thread cx7tt
Operational question about protection for the K3 receiver. When
listening to TX5K on 75ssb, my Steppir on 20m could hear much better
than my Inverted L for 80m. My setup uses the WX0B Six Pak. With the
K3 using ANT1, would the front end be protected when I manually switched
from L to beam? The SixPak specs show -60db of isolation between radio
and antenna. The L horizontal leg is within 20ft of the SteppirI'm
running about 700w. I am not using the sub rcvr during this operation.

[Elecraft] P3 lvl cal?

2013-04-14 Thread cx7tt

Hello All,

Question about the Lvl cal operation of the P3. I have noticed a 2 S
unit diff between the K3 and P3. I used the XG-1 to make sure the K3
was set properly. Using Lvl cal, I noted the default was -5.4 and my P3
was -9.6. To get a K3 S meter reading of S4 to equal S4 on the P3, I
had to increase the Transfer gain to -30.0!

This seems excessive. Would appreciate some guidance on how to resolve
this issue.

[Elecraft] K3 err msgs on powr up?

2011-09-10 Thread cx7tt
Hello,

I have been away for 3 months. The K3 was completely disconnected from
antennas, power supply, including removing the PP from the back of the rig.
Today I decided to update the firmware and when I turned the power on, I
got err BP1, then LPF, IO3, IF1, XV3, AT3, PA1, and BP3. After that, it
worked fine. I hooked it up to dummy load and got full power on all
bands...turned it off, same result, BP1, LPF, etc. I could use any of
the rocker switches/buttons on the front panel and any of them would
cycle to next error msg, in the same order as the first time..then work
ok. I had an older firmware so decided to put 4.39 in the radio, along
with the DSP1/DSP2. AFter the successful download, same thingpower
upBP1, LPF, etc.

Any ideas, suggestions?

[Elecraft] K3 no xmit, no receive?

2015-05-30 Thread cx7tt
Hola,

I was scheduled to operate my K3 as a remote for the WPX contest.
Problems with VPN at remote site delayed that setup. As contest time
approached, I decided to deploy my Buddipole out the apartment window
and was gonna play around with 100w and dipole config.on 15m.

However, I could not hear any signals, at all. Nothing but white noise
on all bands. The Buddipole ends in a BNC which I had connected to
adaptor for PL259. Tried Ant 1 and Ant 2 with no luck. Thinking adaptor
may be bad, I hook BNC to RX in but no sigs there.

This morning, more troubleshooting, I discovered that there is no power
out (although I was tricked as ATU was finding perfect SWR , HI).

K3 has not been used for over a year and when I brought it to HP, it was
inside my rollaboard so I had a watchful eye on it during the trip. The
only thing I can think of, is perhaps one or more of the circuit boards
was dislodged due to vibrations of rolling around the airport or within
the airplane(s) themselves. 9 hours on B767 then 3 on a
 B737.

Before I open up the K3 and start messing around inside. any suggestions
or tips on where I should start? I am thinking of pulling circuit boards
then resetting them, just in case one or more was 'jiggled' loose during
transport.

Hi Dave,

Yes I did solve by opening up the K3 and 'jiggling' circuit boards and
putting covers back onso, not sure which board had gotten loose. I
see where you cc support, as it's the weekend, you may want to post on
the reflector so the battery of experts, like W3FPR can read your well
written diagnosis below.

Wish you luck.

 Did you ever solve this?

My K3 just died, after being left on overnight. It was working fine
last evening, and this afternoon, I came down to the shack to start the
NA QSO party CW contest, and no receive, no transmit.

I've tried a number of things, including re-loading all the firmware,
with the requisite reboots, and restoring the configuration file I had
saved just before I took the rig out to W8UM field day. During Field
Day, we started getting ERR 12V errors, and the rig started
spontaneously shutting down, coming up in low power (less than 10W). We
had to finish operating the weekend at the 10 W level. Later, I
discovered that the rig was suffering from the dreaded tin-plated
connector issue, so I ordered the connector upgrade kit, and installed
it a couple of weeks ago. All seemed fine at that point, and we did use
the rig to make about 50 contacts (at full power) at the Detroit Maker
 Faire N8M station last weekend.

So, here's what I know, so far:

 1) When I change the filter/DSP controls, I can hear the receiver noise
change accordingly, so it seems that the receive chain is intact at
least from the crystal filters to the audio out.

 2) I have the subreceiver installed, and I hear (don't hear?) the
identical things on it, so it seems likely that it is something that is
upstream to both the main and subreceiver, or something they both share
 (like a mixer/oscillator).

 3) I've tried all bands, and none of them are working, BUT

 4) I can see signals on the P3 on all bands, so the signals are getting
at least to the IF takeout for the P3. I can see signals on ANT 1, ANT2
(I have the ATU), Rx ANT and on the XVTR IN with the KXV3 set to test
 mode.

 5) In all of these cases transmit shows 0 W out. The transmit audio
works on USB/LSB, showing ALC and compression readings on the meter.
With VOX on, the CW paddle switches the K3 into transmit mode, the TX
LED lights, and the CW decode shows the transmitted characters.

 6) I tried to do an RF calibration with the K3 utility, and it seems to
complete, but the K3 displays E 0400E2 ERR DSE, and I have to power
down/up the radio to get rid of the error message. This might just be a
red herring, as I've read messages that indicate this could be an
overrun error or some other communications error when using the KUSB
adapter (which I'm using on a Windows 7 PC).

In summary, the K3 serial 3105 seems to behave completely normally,
including all controls and displays, except that I cannot hear signals
from the antenna, although they are displayed clearly on the P3, and
 transmit power is nil.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

 73,

I am thinking of pulling circuit boards
then resetting them, just in case one or more was 'jiggled' loose during
 transport.

[Elecraft] K3 battery and RRC1258?

2015-11-09 Thread cx7tt
K3 #250 is connected to control RRC 1258 MkII.  I have only been using
this setup for 4 days.  With Win8.1 I find that when I start N1MM+ and
the control box, the N1MM does not 'see' the virtual com ports even
though the device manager does. I found that pullling out the USB plug
from the front of the control RRC seems to 'reset' the com ports and
then all is well.

This morning when I pulled the USB plug out, the K3 shut down until I
plugged the USB back inthen notice that K3 showed 'low battery'.

Went to the K3 manual and there is nothing about a battery in the Index.
Nabbled K3 battery and yes, there is a battery.  One thread did mention
a CR2032.  Is this correct? and where is the battery located? necessary
to remove subRX ?

Now why would pulling out the front panel USB plug from the control RRC
shut down the K3? It has it's separate power supply a SS-30M?

Thanks for tips and suggestions.

[Elecraft] K3 Yamaha CM500 vs Koss SB40

2015-11-05 Thread cx7tt

My CM500 was looking kinda 'ratty' after 4 yrs with ear cushions
starting to shed material. Saw where someone said that Koss actually
makes the CM500 for Yamaha so ordered the SB40 as replacement.

First trial was CQ WW SSB a couple of weekends ago.  Rig had been
sitting in the closet for several months so brought it out and coupled
with Buddipole, 6ft out the window of 24th floor apartment here in HP.
Audio reports were terrible including those from guys who knew my
voice...I had to 'close talk' the SB40 with mic touching lipsusing
VOX as could not find the foot switch adaptor for the Heil footswitch.
Vox had never been an issue as I have used VOX on the K3 for 7 years
with no issues...best Vox I have ever experiencedaudio was so bad,
one guy suggested to turn down the drive on my ampI was running
barefoot K3/100 @ 90w.  Found CM500 in packing box and got it
goingaudio became the usual outstanding.

So, what is the difference between these two headsets and what can I do
to properly use the SB40?

BTW, the Buddipole/CM500/K3 combo was great...due to proximity to
building, could only use BP on 10 and 15m...worked over 600Qs in 3 hours
on 10m on Sunday pm..great fun.

Suggestions for using the SB40 w/K3?

[Elecraft] K3s Utility and Programmable Macros??

2016-03-12 Thread cx7tt

Attempting to set up K3s to do the following as per example in KE7X
manual, p 212, under Macro Sequencing. His example is to program Macro 4
to change the AGC THR to 020 and Macro 5 to AGC 012 by using a Tap of
M1. I do not wish to lose the ability to send cw with M1 so wish to use
M4.

Here is my coding for:
Macro 4:  MN074;MP020;SWT14;MN110;SWT27;SWH41;MN255;

Macro 5:  MN074;MP012;SWT14;MN110;SWT24;SWH41;MN255;

When I test, via the Utility using Macro 4 it changes AGC to 020
confirmed by tapping M4.

Same when selecting Macro 5, it changes AGC to 012, confirmed by tapping
M4.

However, repeated taps of M4 simply show the last selection, in case
Macro 5.

Also, after tapping M4 VFOs show 012 in A and AGC THR in B, until
tapping M4 again. For contesting, this does not work for an efficient
operation.

So, what have I missed with my programming? How can I use M4 to cycle
between 012 and 020 and recover my freq display?

[Elecraft] K3s using RS232 v USB?

2016-03-03 Thread cx7tt

Am in the process of setting up K3s and would like advice on the pro/con
of using RS232 via interface (mKII) to computer or simply USB port to
computer. One pro is obvious to me, such as eliminating the Hydra cable
between my microHam MKII and rig. BTW, the mKII is great piece of "kit"
which I have had for over 8 years, first on Orion II then K3 #250. Never
an issue, always worked perfectly...kinda like an autopilot, one never
thinks about what it does, until it fails.

As a heavy equipment operator, B777/787 (instructor pilot) the A/P is
engaged after take off and the jet flies itself (via computer inputs) to
touchdown in LU land 9 hours later; a total A/P failure has never
happened in those aircraft, what with redundancy, but if it did, it
would be like 9 hours of operating a dxpedition with paper log and bug.

As CX7TT/CW7T, made over 30k Qs in 10 years on all modes but mostly cw
and RTTY. Even did 1st moon bounce with W7GJ from MT to CX. So now you
have an idea of what and how I operate...throw in a little PSK and WSJT.

Now, I have looked for info on Nabble so as to not invent the wheel, the
K3s manual and Fred, KE7X, excellent K3s/P3 manual, Ch 10 KIO3B which
shows the many variations to configure and setup. I am not an EE or
electronics technician, simply an appliance operator, so I need you guys
to keep it simple!

I would like to know exactly what would be sacrificed by the convenience
of using the USB to computer vs an external interface. So what are the
con(s)?

Thanks for reading.

[Elecraft] KPA500 Temps?

2017-01-16 Thread cx7tt
For the NAQP cw party this past weekend, I ran low power. Rather than
'stress' the K3s with 100W, I chose to run 6W thru KPA500, giving me 100w.

During a one hour run period, 125+ Qs on 15m, I noticed the KPA500 temp
at 51C which surprised me. Idle temp in the shack is generally around 33
to 35C. I expected much lower temp at 100w output.

Why the higher temp and is it not related to power out?

[Elecraft] K-Pod F keys Tap and Hold?

2016-10-03 Thread cx7tt
Hola,

Set up my K-Pod for K3 this morning. Initially a daunting task as I am
not a programmer but between the Programmer's ref manual(my eyes glazed
over after 6 pages), KE7X K3/P3 cookbook (Ch.11) and the enclosed
instructions, was able to set up for my modest needs.

What threw me off initially was the macro launch from F1-F8 as "Hold"
rather than "tap". That struck me as counter intuitive as the K3's
frequently used front panel selections are initiated with a 'tap'.

The workaround was to select the appropriate macro from the K3 utility
so as to mirror N1MM keyboard choices, such as F4 (tap) sends my call,
by using Macro 12, which triggers M1 (HP1XT) on the K3.

So, question is:

Is it possible to reverse this selection so that F1-8 Macro from K3
Utility is a 'tap' rather than 'hold'? Ref page 6 of K-Pod instructions.

[Elecraft] K3/KPA500/KAT500 key interrupter w/W8ZR Station Pro 1?

2017-04-01 Thread cx7tt
Setting up the above config w/W8ZR Station Pro 1 and K2. The Station Pro
1 allows switching between two rigs whilst using one microphone/one
keyer/one set of speakers/headphones. It will also allow the use of the
KPA500 and KAT500 with either the K3 or K2.

Currently I have the K3 Line set up with Enhanced KPA500/KAT500
operation. It works seamlessly.

Adding the K2 and W8ZR Station Pro 1 so I may have access to KPA500 and
KAT500; do I need to use the key line interruption in the circuit
between K3 key out and KAT500 PTT RLY as if a Steppir IR/W2 were in the

Tips or suggestions?

[Elecraft] KPA 500 runaway

2017-05-06 Thread cx7tt

Hello All,

I have almost same issue with K3S and KAT500/KPA500.

I only need about 22w max to get 500w on all bands except 40m where
drive must be 25/26w.
First couple of "dits" light up the 700w red LED but never trips the
amp. After that, it operates normally.
At first thought it was amp but discovered it was the K3S. It appears
after a band change but not all the time. First couple of dits show 40w
output, then normal after that.
Traveling now and when next home will see what happens when I use my
K2/100 with the amp.
Yes, have done the 5 and 50 w TX gain cal procedure, twice.

I also have low voltage of 56v and with tap at max for regular 110v
service. Ele support told me that below 60v should be ok, so I just live
with it. And with the occasional 700 LED lighting up. This has been
going on for over a year and with lot of operating, mostly cw, in
contests, running pile ups etc.
Yes, I do have several of CMC chokes by Balun Design, My Antenna plus
extra two or three large chokes with 8 turns of RG8X passed thru. YC
would smile! RF does not seem to be an issue here.
See QRZ.com HP1XT for description of antenna system.
Not wishing to hijack the thread; will be watching closely to see how
this is resolved.

[Elecraft] Lat/Long map

2017-10-15 Thread cx7tt
Hi Bill,

Thanks for putting out the lat/long link. The best part for me was the
antipode link found on that web site. So much easier to figure out the
A/P rather than playing with DXAtlas to find.

As CX7TT, my A/P was in the Yellow Sea...draw line from Seoul to
Shanghai and that's where it was...explains why at greyline I could
always hear the JAs

Now, as HP1XT, A/P is direct line from VK9 Xmas to VK9 Coco K and
slightly north...explains why YB is very easy from herejust SW of
Jakarta...

We read about greyline/SS/SR enhancement prop but would like to see
article on antipode propagation.

Re: [Elecraft] K3s WSJT-x V2.1.2 no vox

2019-12-03 Thread cx7tt
Hola Bob and Jim,

I checked all settings, I had not clicked on "Tune".
Computer sound settings were all good. Mic and spkr USB both on Audio codex.
Changed from Vox to CAT as per Bob's advice.

Still nothing until I changed the 'power slider' in WSJT-x to 100% vs
50. Then got 8 barschanged to about 70% and got five bars with fifth
flickering, although sometimes all five would momentarily blink off for
less than one sec, then come back.

Also discovered that had to make adjustments to power slider in software
whenever I changed bands. K3s Mic gain set at 39,up from original 30 to
get proper ALC.

Strange, all of this due to update to v 2.1.2.

Tnx for all the suggestions, at least back in operation.

[Elecraft] K3s WSJT-x V2.1.2 no vox

2019-12-02 Thread cx7tt

Hola,

Problem with keying the VOX on the K3s with new install. Select "Tune",
it turns red but xmtr does not key VOX.

Never had this problem with v 2.0.0. Double checked USB audio codex for
both speaker and microphone. Parameters checked for Radio tab, K3s,
using usb from KIO3 to computer, com4 (doublechecked Device manager for
correct port), VOX tab checked, 38400 and 8-1-none for Data/stop/handshake.

Line in selected at 30 on K3s along with Vox gain at 30 (same as
before). K3s mode selected for TX data and Data A menu selected.
Received and decode FT8 no problem, still no xmit with VOX.

Do not see where I can go back to v2.0.0 as it no longer appears on
WSJT-x website.

Suggestions?

My K2 is modified with Z1 IF buffer added. Originally set up for N8LP's

New is the RSPdx from SDRplay that I would like to use.
