Re: [Audyssey] RS Games Client 1.1
I have the same issues. Or, as I state in an email the following occurs? Hello, beta 1.1 is not, with voiceover running mac os 10.6 on my macbook at least, reading the menus it just starts by issuing the prompt of RS games client no games, unknown yet arrowing around reveals no prompts. When I pressed enter and was told to enter my username then again to confirm password and was logged on again, no spoken information was given. I do have apple script enabled. [Audyssey] Rs Games Uno keystrokes in manual are missing
Hi, I just noticed that there are keystrokes in Uno that are not listed in the manual, or keystrokes that are needed are missing intirely. Pressing S in the game for example announces the players scrores, but that's not listed in the manual. I just found it through trial and error cause I desperately wanted to know what the scores are. And how can I find out how many cards each player has left? That's not listed in the manual either, but there must be one. Otherwise, noone could catch a player who forgot to say uno. Could you please tell me this keystroke and please add these missing keystrokes to the manual? Re: [Audyssey] topspeed
Hi, Also to Michael. Of course it's not just the version number. Why would anyone in their right mind want to update the version number without adding or fixing anything at the game? As far as top speed 1.1 versus top speed 2.1 goes, the older version lacks many features, including online-racing, custom cars, and many, many other things. So, yes, you could say, it's not a different game, but now it surtenly has a new, and better feel about it. Re: [Audyssey] accessible checkers
Yes, Checkers is known as Draughts over here, and yes, it does exist on one of the collections from azabat software, volume 4 I believe along with backgamman and connect 4. see http://www.azabat.co.uk/ for details. As to the database though, one thing you can do is search for types of games using the search function. If you were looking for scrabble for instance, you can search for word games, or if you were looking for monopoly try searching for traditional games. As regards not all games being in the database, certainly the vast majority are, and new ones are being added fairly regularly, - I added several entries (including bgt), just yearday for instance. However michael, I do find it rather irritating at the least that I take the time to play a game, write a review, possibly hunting down links to resources such as audio reviews or documentation along the way, and add it to the database, then you would rather pepper the list with easily answerable questions than use it. I'm sure Phil would say the same with regards to the pcs games list. Beware the grue! Hmm. By your messages, I was thinking you must be about 10. This is not meant as a put down. If you're 29, act it. We have seen this message repeatedly, with different time stamps. This makes it appear as to have been sent by you on a regular basis rather than just one time as you claim. He, like me, figured that you are a kid based on your posts to the list. Hello. I'm not a moderator on this list (though I do perform that duty elsewhere), however, might I suggest some decorum from both Michael and Oriol here. On the one hand, the message archives do actually show Michael's message concerning Draughts (checkers), was only posted the once http://www.mail-archive.com/gamers@audyssey.org/ On the other, as I myself have said, I do rather feel that the majority of Michael's questions would be better answered by him simply looking on audiogames.net and pcs games, rather than bombarding the list. My downloads directories have always been public. I often point people there when I have a game on the server, but not an official link to the game. So apparently Hayri must constantly keep an eye out for my server so that as soon as a file shows up in my public downloads area he grabs it without waiting for any official word from the developer. This entire situation has definitely made me rethink my public download area setup. I'm strongly thinking of moving my games to a private area where snoopers won't be quite as eager to grab the files before I can change my mind or make some sort of official announcement that the files are ready for download. Leaving my new releases in a public area requires trust from the public to wait for an official announcement etc, and in this case my trust was broken. I now realise there are some people too impatient, too childish, to wait for me to get the official word out one way or another. He just assumed that was the final release and went for it and got burned for it in the process. Frankly, I'm kind of glad it blue screened on him as it serves him right for downloading a broken release before I could fix/address the problem directly. I hope he and others have learned a lesson I have good reason for not releasing an announcement until I'm absolutely sure the game is stable enough for public release. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] listen up you.
Hi, everyone. Please, calm down. First of all, a number of us did get that message multiple times, but acording to the list archives the message was only sent once. So these things happen now and then. So Orial was definitely out of line here. Second of all, Michael, you may be 29 years old, but to be honest some of your messages don't come off that way. I don't want to say this to put you down or anything, but they seam immature and are something I would expect from a kid rather than a 29 year old adult. For example, most mature adults would go online look at websites like audiogames.net and pcsgames.net and see what games are available rather than asking if this or that game is available. It is rather frustrating for some of us who use those websites regularly to see someone else who is unwilling to use the resources available to them to do some of his/her own research instead of asking everybody else to do it for them. That's just not good adult behavior in my opinion. If you had looked you would have discovered that Azobat Software apparently has an accessible version of Drafts, the U.K. version of Checkers, available for VI gamers. That information wasn't very hard to come by, and you could have found that information out yourself simply by looking at the websites I mentioned above. Why make us look up the information for you when you could have done the same yourself? Basically, all I am saying is do a little research and get some idea of what is out there before asking a number of questions if this or that game is available. It is the only way you are going to know for sure, and will keep the list traffic down.Plus it will goa long ways to not upsetting some list members with your constant questioning. Thanks. Re: [Audyssey] mota 14
Hi, Shaun. Um...That definitely isn't something that would work. First of all I'd have to create some sort of ogg decoder to decode all the ogg files and decompress them backinto wav files after install. Even if I did what would be the point? The thing is if you convert a PCM wav file into ogg, mp3, wma, etc the compression removes some of the audio data to compress it down into that file. If you extract that mp3, ogg, wma, etc back into wav you can't get that lost audio data back. It is gone forever. So no matter what you are going to lose audio quality by using any compressed file types. If I was going to do that I might as well just save everything as ogg and decompress the data into memory when the game starts up. It will lag a little bit that way, but is more sensable than your suggestion of decode the files during install. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] mota 14
Hi, Shaun. As for the audio issue I have already fixed that problem. As I said in a prier message it was just a case of the audio not being attenuated correctly.I went back into the code and reset the values and now the sounds are a lot louder and clearer than in the broken release you guys downloaded Friday. As for the crash I don't know what Hayri was talking about either, but I can certainly say it absolutely has nothing to do with DirectX. As I said in the change log I removed all DirectX support, removed the Microsoft Win32 API, and a bunch of Windows specific code to make the engine more or less Linux and Mac compatible. So if you are getting an error about DirectX it sure ain't my games, because I have technically dropped everything to do with Microsoft's Windows specific APIs in my game engine. As for the FPS version I've had to put that on hold while I worked on the new cross-platform engine. I have an older version of the FPS version, which is fairly stable, but the problem is that it still uses the same version of the game engine as beta 13. So before I release the FPS version I first need to fix the problems in the new cross-platform Genesis Engine, port the FPS version to the new engine, and then beta test it. So don't expect a release to be out any time soon. Although, porting the FPS version to the new engine shouldn't be too hard once the bugs are worked out of the new engine. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 14!
Right. About the only way someone can really avoid that is to release a Star Wars game, mod, etc is to put it on a file sharing site like sendspace or dropbox, leave it up there for two or three days, and then take it down. That would lower the likelyhood of getting in trouble, but still you always run into some risk doing anything like that. I've done a lot of thinking about this subject, and actually have a private Star Wars game of my own in development, but feel helpless to actually release it to the public. I've got close to 5 GB of sound effects alone to work with, but don't feel I can legally release anything under the USA Games Interactive name just because I don't want my game company to get in trouble with Lucas Arts for developing Star Wars titles without expressed permission. There is always that possability of being drug through the courts over it. On 10/3/10, Bryan Peterson bpeterson2...@cableone.net wrote: Even that's not a guarantee that you won't get into trouble. Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 14!
Hi, Ben. Oh, I see. Still that's no excuse for modifying someone elses game. I'll just say right now I don't really approve of people modding my games. The way I create them is the way I intend people to play them. That's why the end user license agreement, which you obviously haven't read, forbids the modifying of any USA Games titles. If this is going to be a big problem for people I might have to go the way of Philip Bennefall and others and just encrypt the sounds to keep people from modifying my games in ways not intended by the developer. Fortunately, I'm not like Microsoft or Lucas and plan to drag you into court for every miner breech of license, but still it is not wise to directly get on a list like this and tell a developer you have decided to mod his game even though you agreed to the terms of the license to install the software. By agreeing to the license, weather you read it or not, you are legally bound by that license to do as the developer instructs. If they say not to decompile, modify, reverse engineer, or otherwise tamper with the normal operation of the software that's exactly what they mean. Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 14!
Hi, Ben. Do you think Lucas Arts etc cares about that? i know of authors who have written fan fiction stories that were totally free, but got their butts dragged into court for copyright infringement anyway. So giving something away for free without proper licensing doesn't exactly make it legal or acceptable to the copyright holder. I'm not sure where people get their ideas, but that seams to be a common misconception between the people on this list and elsewhere. They believe as long as they write this game, story, game mod, etc for free and give it away that is perfectly legal and alright to do so. Far too many people have found out that isn't the case. I remember a case a few years back about some guy who created an online Scrabble game, put it on the internet, and it got to be a big hit with sighted online gamers. Not suprisingly Hasbro, the current copyright holder of the Scrabble game, found out about the website and quickly sent their lawyers into shut it down asap. The main reason they gave the guy so much grief over it was because Hasbro was afraid the website might effect their sales of the Scrabble game they sold in stores. It probably wasn't true, but Hasbro made a point to drag the guy through the ringer over it. The case was evedently big enough to make the national headlines on CNN. Moral of the story is if you get caught the copyright holder can give you a lot of grief over a simple game mod just because you didn't pay for and properly license those sounds from Skywalker Sound or Lucas Arts. Could me and you have a private discussion off-list about this? -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: 03 October 2010 16:39 To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 14! Sorry tom. I wish to give you my most humble apologies. No one that I know reads those things anyway. Its just out of habit. But thanks for bringing that to light. Here's the conundrum for you. Hi, Ben. All of my games currently have a commercial license, and as such they are to be treated as any other commercial software product you buy. On 10/3/10, Ben gamehead...@aol.co.uk wrote: Ahh. Hi Michael. While I do have the setup for the Snowball Wars I can tell you that it isn't a game you would want. For one thing it is a two player game meaning if you don't have someone sitting with you in the room you can't even play it. For another it is one of Philip Bennefall's very early projects, and isn't very well written to begin with. So that's why I never uploaded it to the PB Games section on my website. While it is true that some people like Draconis and Philip Bennifall have implemented automated registration systems, not all have, and pininteractive certainly haven't as yet, - indeed that might be precisely what their upgrade of the sales system is about. Re: [Audyssey] mota beta 14!
Hi, Ben. Who knows. My guess is that is pretty hard for anyone to locate and investigate every possible misuse of their licensed material. It is a case of it is so common place that they can't necessarily take action against everyone so quite a bit of it just slips through the cracks. What Bryan and I are mainly getting at is what could happen if you were to get caught. Not necessarily implying you will get caught, or anything will actually come of it. I too have seen cases where this or that just slipped through the cracks unnoticed. For example, way back in the early 90's before I had completely lost my sight the big thing was the game called Doom. One of the things that made Doom so popular is ID Software released an expantion for the game that allowed you to create your own wad files complete with custom graphics, sounds, level maps, etc. It got to be a huge hit with mainstream gamers and naturally there were all kinds of expantions such as Terminator, Star Wars, etc that ran on the Doom engine. Surprisingly nobodywas making an issue of the various expantions, but they certainly could have seeing as these were obvious rip offs of copyrighted material like Star Wars. Then, of course, Agrip modified ID Software's Quake engine and named it Audio Quake. Cara Quinn, who I believe is on this list, created her own version of Audio Quake with a Star Wars theme called Jedi Quake. Cara has never gotten in any trouble with her Jedi Quake mod but that's not to say Lucas Licensing couldn't come breathing down on her someday for it either. It is probably just a case of what they don't know won't hurt them, or us for that matter. As for end user licensing I figured as much. A lot of people have a bad habbit of not reading them, but they really should. It might sound like a bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo, but it really tells you and others what the terms of the software are. If you do something that is not permited in the terms of the license the developer or company has the right to take you to court and sue for damages. Saying you didn't read the license is no defence in court. If you click the I Agree button then you agreed to it. That's all there is to it. Smile. Hi, Bryan. Actually, BGT already has the encryption/decryption ability. I don't know if he has documented it or not, but when I licensed PB Streemway it definitely could encrypt wav and ogg files, and decript them during runtime of a game. It also has the ability to create and use encrypted pack files for sounds such as what Q9 uses. Trust me I tested the security on Streemway before licensing and the security is definitely good enough to keep out everyone accept for a die-hard cracker. Hi Lori, Nope. You didn't miss anything important. It is just a case of Hayri was using a program called WebMon to monitor my downloads directory and decided to download an unstable version of MOTA beta 14 without waiting for word from me that it was for A, the public, and B, that it was the most stable build of the game. As a result he decided to let everyone on the list know about it, and caused a bit of confusion over weather this was really the official version of beta 14 or not. Cheers! Hi William, Yes, I certainly should hope so. After I finish up with beta 14, the side-scroller version, which I hope to release this week, I will start porting the FPS version to the new engine. That shouldn't take too long, maybe a week, since most of the code for the game itself is pretty generic and calls common functions from the engine rather than being based on this or that directly. Re: [Audyssey] sounds and their volumes
Hi Shaun, Definitely not a good idea. Most of this can be corrected internally just by figuring out the right values to give OpenAL. It is, of course, not really OpenAL's fault but my own since I am still in a sense still experimenting with the library. I'm trying to create a 2d soundscape with a library designed to reproduce a full virtual 3d soundscape with support for 5.1 and 7.1 output which is overkill here. Smile. On 10/3/10, shaun everiss sm.ever...@gmail.com wrote: Hi. tom there is another way, to do the sounds but its going to be consuming to do. in night of parasite sounds are at the same volume or rather less, depending where they are. however each position centre, slightly right, medium right and hard right same with left and behind are seperate files. OFcause this means a bigger game. It also means a lot of initial work, with editing and fiddling with the sfx but this could be a way to handle the sounds. in beta 13 I hear a monster to my right its quiet ish because its to my right it comes closer and closer and gets louder and louder. however its never fully in the centre in fact once it is I am sure its to close same with the pits. right now once the sound gets in the to close or almost to close its to loud and vice versa though I know its there at the range I need it so can handle it. Though I don't have the file anymore I went back to beta 13. One way you could have the game do things is have the sounds compressed in a big file to make it smaller then during install the file is uncompressed. not sure how it would work, and it would probably take longer than necessary. I did not notice any lag with the game but I have a duel core of 2.1 ghz with 2gb ram with xp pro and the cpu didn't budge. The game was produced by the audio network on http://www.pressakey.net/ who made audio programs using real time. It was sent out only on cd I believe so I don't think there ever was a setup file. The audio network have stopped actually selling games, but they have uploaded some games to their website which were previously only available on cd, noteably Jungle fever. I haven't installed real player on this desktop (because I generally found it quite an annoying program and apart from the aforementioned audio network really didn't use it), however it's possible they might've made gb one on one playable online, I suppose I really ought to reinstall either real player or real alternative and have a look. [Audyssey] The audio network
Hi. downloaded real alternative and I checked the audio network site i mentioned, http://www.pressakey.net/ They've changed their selection of trivia games around, but haven't got gb one on one up at the momentp. Then again, it's possible they'll upload it later, sinse they do seem to change what they have online at one time fairly frequently. That being said though, I did play the original demo of gb one on one which the audio network used to have on their site, and it really wasn't impressive at all. essentially, you chose one of three numbers, and there was a random chance of you saving the ball or scoring, with a limited number of audio messages involved for each. Really, it was a glorified game of chance, and I wager anyone with experience with bgt, or any other programming language for that matter, could probably recreate it with very litle effort. Hi, Ben. Re: [Audyssey] mota 14
Hi Ryan, Well,if you want I can make a recording of me playing the FPS version if you would like. That might helpgive you an idea of playing the game. Basically, all of the keyboard controls are fairly typical for a mainstream FPS game such as up arrow to run, down arrow to turn around in place, left/right turns you in place, shift-left and shift-right sidestep, alt-arrow keys jump, and control arrow keys are used for climbing. So if you walked into room 2 you would use the left/right arrow keys to center the enemy in your laser sight, use the spacebar to fire your gun, and then would use shift-up arrow to walk forward or press up arrow to run straight ahead. To climb the rope, which is in the center of the room, you have to center the sound in your headphones or speakers and use alt+up arrow to jump forward and grab the rope. Then, you could use control-up arrow to climb up into the next room above the one you are in. Does that make sense? Smile. As for Freedom Wheel of Fortune, the last time I tried it, it was a bit buggy, although it had most everything, except for the bonus round and the jackpot etc. Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: gamers-boun...@audyssey.org [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of dark Sent: Sunday, October 03, 2010 12:36 PM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] request for games that are hard to find. As I said before michael, please give the chap at pin interactive time to respond. When I bought the game it took 48 hours for my key to arrive, and that was even before they were updating their sales system as they obviously are doing now. Myself, I wouldn't start to become concerned about an electronic order, or begin sending further messages to the company until at least five days after I made the order, probably a week. Remember, most (if not all), audio game companies don't have gigantic markiting and sales departments who can just process orders at a moments notice, indeed for many devs such as Tom ward and David greenwood, they personally have to generate and send every key themselves. While it is true that some people like Draconis and Philip Bennifall have implemented automated registration systems, not all have, and pininteractive certainly haven't as yet, - indeed that might be precisely what their upgrade of the sales system is about. The upshot of all of this is, be patient a litle longer. I believe you only ordered the game on Friday, in which case, I would advise waiting until at least net wednesday before becoming concerned. Actually Tom, I rather like the idea of a recording of an fps game as well. Knowing the layout and sound effects of the side scroller, it'd be really quite interesting to see how they translate to a full 3D environment, pluss to be perfectly honest, I am fairly curious about how full 3D with the genesis engine works in practice. Re: [Audyssey] mota 14
Fps stands for first person shooter. Strictly speaking the term isn't accurate when referring to a game like mota, 3D platformer would be closer, but generally it's used to mean any game in 3D. then again, sinse the distinction in audio games betwene first person and third person is rather blurred anyway given that you don't actually see the main character, I suppose it does make sense on some level. Hi everyone, Ok, it has come to my attention that some of you were upset or worried about the file size of the unofficial release of MOTA beta 14. I'm basically writing this to find out if some of you really want to have me compress those sounds down to something more managable to like 50 MB which will take a slight performance hit as well as some loss of audio quality or just have me upload the full release in the next couple of days using uncompress wav files. Hi, That's actually a certain style or format of game. Games are broken down into certain styles such as first-person, third-person, side-scroller, etc. So with MOTA I have designed the game using two different styles a 2d side-scroller format and a 3d first-person format. Each offer drastically different styles of game play using the same game. On 10/3/10, Castanedagarcia_Alfredo casta...@hsd.k12.or.us wrote: Why is it refered as a FPS?
