Struth Michael !
My ADSL2 speed is about 11/0.9 so that is pretty poor for NBN.

I am pretty happy with my ADSL2 speed and don’t really need NBN.
But looks like we don’t get to choose when the time comes.

Our iPrimus experience in Doubleview, about 200 m from the node, has been
atrocious with download speeds of 0.10Mbps. Not at peak times, I hasten to add.
That “speed” was a 5:56AM. After we complained the download speed went up to
35.5Mbps but as I write this it is down to 11.0 with an upload speed of 0.91.

I have to add my endorsement for Telstra’s service as well, although I must say

essentially the same cable technology. Nonetheless, apart from a few early
teething problems, the move to NBN has been quite painless and well supported.

That has given me great confidence in the Telstra move to NBN.
Thank you Robin.

I moved reluctantly from Westnet to Telstra 9 years ago when I moved house.
I had been very satisfied with Westnet until I moved house.
But Westnet could not offer me high speed ADSL at the time and Telstra could.
Something to do with the local Phone Sub Station ?
In fact it was Westnet that suggested I should move to Telstra (which surprised
me at the time).

Anyway I have had the most wonderful experience with Telstra since then.
I have rarely had to contact them with an issue.
But when I have they have been very helpful, quick and efficient.

On the other hand, my step daughter is with Westnet.
She has me as a contact on her Westnet account because she is not very “tech
savvy”.
During the past couple of years I have had the most horrendous dealings with
Westnet on her behalf.
I dread each time she has a Westnet issue and asks me to resolve it for her.

I have tried to talk her into going Telstra to make my life easier, but she is
not keen on change.

I have to say I cannot speak highly enough of Telstra.

I can not see speak highly enough of Westnet, though they are in the iiNet

Re: RANT WARNING! iiNet NBN

2019-02-16 Thread Stephen Chape
M !
I am with Bigpond and recently spoke with them about my forthcoming NBN (second
half of 2019).
They said it will happen automatically and I will get a new free modem that I
simply plug in.
Nothing else to do.

All sounds too easy to me.
Got me worried too now !

Hi Blitto,

W97M.Downloader is a malicious macro that may arrive as a Word document

When the Word document is opened, the macro attempts to download and execute

address of Apple Store applef...@apple.com and a valid link to
www.apple.com/au in it saying that I (apple customer not personally
addressed to me - second alarm bell) had received $100 store credit

Apart from the sounds too be true alarm also the attached html (which I
opened in BBEDIT to read the raw HTML needed information that would not
be needed by a company to give credit card credit including stuff such as
your credit card's online service password and Personal ID checking
details such as mother's maiden name etc etc (and apple already knows the
necessary information to give store credit - and has its own store gift

Firefox email Scam/Trojan warning

2011-10-18 Thread Ronda Brown
Hello WAMUG Firefox users,

There is an email doing the rounds ‘again’ (as I just received 2), that says it
is From: Mozilla Firefox no-re...@updating.net

This is NOT from Mozilla Firefox! Mozilla would definitely not send an email
prompting you to upgrade.
If anything, a notification would appear within Firefox itself.

This is what the message says:
/Quote:
New update arrive.

Your security is our top priority. Our open source security process means we
have an international community of experts working around the clock to monitor
the latest threats. As soon as a security threat is discovered, we write a

is a very important part of staying safe online.
Firefox is constantly evolving as our community finds ways to make it better,
and as we adjust to the latest security threats. Keeping your Firefox

A Firefox update will not make any changes to your bookmarks, saved passwords

won.t be immediately compatible with new updates.
Re-installing Firefox will not affect your settings, bookmarks or preferences
in any way.
A Firefox software update is a quick download of small amounts of new code to

FIRST time I open it after downloading - but it keeps coming up everytime I
start-up and dropbox launches.

Any ideas?

Hi Neil,

Did you click ‘Yes’ the first time you received this warning?
If so you can disable that warning, per-item or permanently.

Using the Terminal, Snow Leopard (10.6) users can enter this command,
substituting ~/Downloads (the Downloads folder inside the user folder) for
whatever file or folder where they'd like to prevent future download warnings.

Firstly upgrade to the latest version of Dropbox. If that doesn't work, try
running the following code in a Terminal window.

xattr -d -r com.apple.quarantine /Applications/Dropbox.app

I almost hesitate to ask, but... you're not running the app from a disk image
by any chance, are you? This can happen if you somehow managed to install the
app as an alias rather than an actual copy.

It's about the only explanation I can think of which accounts for that
behaviour.

Re: Internet application warning won't go away

2011-09-11 Thread Neil Houghton

Hi Peter ( Hi Ronni for previous response),

I think I have got to the bottom of this - bear with the preamble - I get to
the point eventually ;o)

Since I hadn't used the laptop for some while, I decided on an erase and
clean install of OSX - which I did - setting up a computer admin account
which I do on all my computers - I leave this as a clean account to fall
back on for any troubleshooting.

Then, in preparation for the trip, a migration of my user account from my
iMac and a migration of Georgie's user account from her iMac.

My iMac runs Snow Leopard but the laptop and Geoorgie's G5 iMac both run
Leopard (I need to install more RAM before putting SL on the laptop). The
idea was I would transfer user data, applications, settings etc from my iMac
and then just user data for Georgie from her iMac.

Migration assistant worked perfectly (as expected) for the transfer between
the two Leopard machines - messages that made sense, time estimates that
made sense and progress bars that showed, well, progress.

Migration assistant, however, really didn't work well doing the transfer
from the SL iMac to the laptop. I selected the options I wanted OK but it
told me that the data to transfer was 0kb (or Mb I don't really remember)
and rapidly progressed to one minute remaining, spinning barber pole
progress bar - where it stayed for the requisite hours it took to transfer
some 80 GB of user data.

User data seemed to transfer OK - but no applications - so I went ahead and
installed all the applications manually (plus all the relevant application
updates :o(

Now, getting to the point, I installed the applications while logged in as
Computer admin - including Dropbox.

However, once everything was installed, updated, permissions repaired
(again) and backed up, I then logged in as me to my user account, to start
working and it was while logged in to this account (my main user account)
that I would have launched Dropbox and kept getting the warnings.

This eventually occurred to me and on checking get info on the dropbox
account only computer admin had read/write permission for the application
- so I thought that write access to the app might be needed to reset the
warning flag?? (I don't really know how this works - but it seemed
possible!) So (in get info) I added my user name to the applications
permissions and gave myself read/write permission.

At first it seemed nothing had changed but after a relaunch of dropbox and a
reboot of the computer, the warnings seem to have gone :o))

So, I'm not really sure if it was my fix that fixed it - but anyway it
seems fixed

Cheers

Hi Ray,

I guess you have tried the solutions found here to open documents created un a
previous version.

Documents will not open in Word 2011 if they have been created in a previous
version

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/953266

1. Start Word for Mac application.
2. On the File menu, click Open.
3. In the Convert File window, scroll down and select Recover Text from any
file. You may get a warning, click OK. Note: Some formatting might change.
4. On the File menu, click Save As.
5. In the Format list, select Word Document (.docx), then click Save.

deeming those accounts 'noteworthy', guilty by proximity to some site or

it also could be that their e-mail address is getting used for a reply

When you get potentially dodgy emails with links in them it is
revealing to click and drag the links a little way, which shows the
real url. If it matches the link text all is probably well (though
still use your judgement)- if it's a long, complicated affair ending
in .ru you might want to avoid

Re: Financial Advice from the Storm warning about buying a car

2010-03-25 Thread Denise Williams
 Hi All
Thanks for forwarding this about SYNERGY rebate.
We were out for more than 12 hours so I tried to submit my claim but at the
end of putting in all my details, the email that should have gone through, via
their web page, failed. I also needed a username and password.
Might try again later - $80 is $80, after all!
And on another issue. If anyone is thinking of grabbing a bargain at the car
yards BEWARE of not being able to get insurance coverage. Our insurer won¹t
even give THIRD PARTY insurance to a car that has ANY damage. Not happy. So
our son is driving around without ANY insurance (we thought he had 3rd party
but on investigation, find he hasn¹t). His car resembles a golf ball¹s
surface, having been parked at UWA. They may give you 3rd party if you swap
your existing policy onto another car.

I succeeded in lodging a claim with Western Power. I didn't use
Graeme's link, but entered the address manually, as far as /
yourPowerSupply/ and then I selected the rest progressively.

Our power was off for over 50 hours so I think we will meet the 12 hr
figure.

Growl App - Console Log warning

2009-12-10 Thread Alan Smith
What should I do with Console now it is on the Dock and logging new data
frequently? This morning the Console log popped onto desktop at the same
time as the requested DiskUtility.log.(Coincidence?) Console shows a
steady count of 4000 messages so I assume the oldest entries are being
removed. Recent messages mainly relate to the Growl application.

I never requested Growl but it recently self installed. It appeared about
the time I installed DropBox. Is the Growl app necessary or even useful?
The last couple of thousand entries show Growl attempting to do things
unsuccessfully over the last few days. Notwithstanding glowing references,
a Google search for Growl information doesn't inspire me it is a must-have
tool.

Hi Alan,

I was rushing to finish another support job I'm on, and didn't have time to
explain why you are seeing Console.
When you requested the DiskUtility.log it opened Console, so you could view the
log.
While your computer performs tasks, it sends messages between applications,
processes, and the operating system.
Some of these messages are displayed, but most are not displayed because they
can be too detailed and technical for most users.
If you are a programmer debugging software, or are troubleshooting a problem
with a service technician, information related to the problem may be found in
these messages, which are stored in system logs.
To view these messages, you can use the Console application, located in the
Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

You can quit Console from the dock or from the Menu Bar - Console Quit

For more information, open Console and choose Help Console Help.

Hi again Alan,

I would get rid of Growl ... You don't need it, and It doesn't play well with
Snow Leopard.
Growl preference pane: It sort of works, but you need to restart System

The whole app is only 32-bit.

Thanks Ronni

1. I will uninstall Growl as next job.

2. Reference to File Manager was a faux pas - it has revealed my very long
MS Windows experience!

3. Maxtor HDD software: not installed - the only files on the HDD were to do
with displaying the Maxtor icon. These were deleted before I formatted the
disk.

Hi Alan,

I was rushing to finish another support job I'm on, and didn't have time to
explain why you are seeing Console.

When you requested the DiskUtility.log it opened Console, so you could view
the log.

While your computer performs tasks, it sends messages between applications,
processes, and the operating system.

Some of these messages are displayed, but most are not displayed because
they can be too detailed and technical for most users.

If you are a programmer debugging software, or are troubleshooting a problem
with a service technician, information related to the problem may be found
in these messages, which are stored in system logs.

To view these messages, you can use the Console application, located in the
Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

You can quit Console from the dock or from the Menu Bar - Console Quit

For more information, open Console and choose Help Console Help.

Ok thanks Alan.

Your query as to how Growl was installed, Drop Box does install growl but it
warns you about it. There is a checkbox during the install asking if you want
Growl. you must have just clicked through it ;-)
Some other add-on utility type apps. also install Growl (or ask if you want it
installed).

Thank you for your instructions on removing Growl.

Like Alan, I also was puzzled as to where this had come from, and why it kept
appearing on my desktop A newer version of Growl is Available. Click to
Install. I could not establish what it was for.

You would not believe it - I thought - okay, Leopard, Growl, must be
connected

So I had clicked yes to download.

Following your instructions I have now manually removed this.

Since WN swapped from Sophos to Ironport I am getting up to 5 or

I complained to WN and was told that the system did not recognize

I assume you are referring to a desktop computer, but if you have a
laptop with a bus-powered external drive (i.e., one that doesn't
plug into the wall), it is easily explained. If either the laptop or
hard drive, or both, are plugged into wall power for the entire time,
everything will be fine. But if the laptop is asleep and both the
laptop AND the hard drive are UNplugged from the wall at the same time
(or if your house lost mains power at any time during the night), you
would get the device removal message when the computer wakes up.

I'm not sure why you would have the problem with a desktop. If you
house experienced power interruptions during the night, I'd expect
your desktop to lose power too. I don't know what kind of WD drive you
have, but make sure it's plugged into the wall if it needs to be. I
can only image that if it came unplugged, it might draw its power
through FireWire when the computer is awake, but not when the computer
is asleep. If the drive has a light, does the light normally stay on
when the computer is asleep, or does it go off?

Hi Barry,

In that case, can I suggest Shutting Down your computer tonight and
turning the Firewire drive off, leaving the computer powered off for
at least 8 hours, then starting back up again and resuming normal

resetting (zapping) your PRAM (find instructions on the web) but
simply leaving your computer turned off may be enough to resettle the
FireWire controller without the side-effects of a PRAM reset.

Can you substitute a different enclosure to try out , or replace the

wait 24 hrs for each trial. However, it is not a problem per se but
more an intriguing behaviour.

Hi Barry,

In that case, can I suggest Shutting Down your computer tonight and
turning the Firewire drive off, leaving the computer powered off for
at least 8 hours, then starting back up again and resuming normal
procedures. Has the problem gone away? Some people might suggest
resetting (zapping) your PRAM (find instructions on the web) but
simply leaving your computer turned off may be enough to resettle the
FireWire controller without the side-effects of a PRAM reset.

Re: Device removal warning

2009-06-16 Thread Barry Sexstone

I continue to be astounded by the power of the group.

After about ten days of the problem the external drive woke as it
should do this morning. The only corrective action I have taken so
far is to request assistance, I have done nothing else.

All I can conclude is the power of the group has prevented my local
poltergeist from playing with the computer overnight.

Thank you Ronni, James and Bob for your input.

Device removal warning

2009-06-15 Thread Barry Sexstone
I have a WD external hard drive connected to firewire 400 port on my
Intel Mac running 10.5.7
The external drive has two partitions - on running time machine and
the other is a backup clone.

In the last few days, on waking from sleep in the morning, the
computer shows the standard device removal warning The device you
removed was not properly put away etc. and the icons for the external
disk are not on the desktop. This is a recent phenomenon and does not
seem to happen when the computer sleeps during the day.

Any clues/advice.

Hello Barry,

When this happens, with the drive connected and powered open Disk
Utility, does the drive show there?
If the drive is listed in the left side list then select the volume
even if it's greyed out, then click on the Mount icon in the DU toolbar.

Why it has suddenly arisen, I have no idea.
Did it arise after doing an update?
A security update, or OS, or application update?

There has to be a reason why it has just started to have this problem.
Does the Firewire Drive go to sleep and perhaps it is not waking when
the computer wakes in the morning?

Hi all,

Also, just a heads up for those of you currently using Safari 3
plugins like Sogudi and AcidSearch: If you upgrade to Safari 4 and do
not first uninstall/remove these plugins you will most likely find
that Safari 4 refuses to launch. Depending on where you installed
(for one user or all), removing the following folders should get
Safari 4 up and running again:

~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL
~/Library/InputManagers/SIMBL

Sogudi is no longer supported, hence it will not work with Safari 4.
The best alternative I have found is Keywurl, although at time of
writing it appears to be awaiting an upgrade to coincide with this
latest Safari 4 release.

Re: MacBook Pro - turns off without warning when no AC

2009-02-10 Thread Steven Knowles
In case of interest to anyone, the outcome of this problem of mine is
that the fourth point on the page which Travis pointed to, ie ...

http://www.apple.com/au/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate

.. also applied. I didn't look closely enough, but the battery had
started to expand. What prompted a closer look was the clicking
section of my track pad suddenly become hard to click, and generally
hard to use. I hadn't noticed any gradual deterioration because I
usually have a mouse and external keyboard plugged in. Turns out the
swelling of the battery pack was interfering with the ability to click
in the track pad.

So, if the clicker on your laptop's trackpad is giving you grief,
check the battery.

A new battery's been ordered from Apple at no cost to me, so can't
complain.

My batteryupdater.bundle file does show 1.3. But I find this note a

MacBook Pro - turns off without warning when no AC

2009-02-06 Thread Steven Knowles
My Intel Core 2 Duo 17 MacBook Pro, when unplugged from an AC power
supply, will turn off without any warning when the battery runs down
to what seems to be a point where the laptop should still be running
on battery power.

It's just happened to me again, and upon connecting the MacBook Pro to
an AC power supply and restarting, the battery indicator was over 30%.

I've heard of resetting PMUs before, but from what I can gather that
seems to apply more to PowerBooks (eg. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1431?viewlocale=en_US
).

This forum http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=509314
indicates a similar problem to mine, and suggests a dud battery. The
machine I have is within the extended 3-year warranty period, though
it seems that the extended warranty doesn't apply to batteries.

Any other suggestions before I resign to what is looking like purchase
of another battery? In case it makes any difference, my Mac is
connected to an AC power supply about 95% of the time.

Re: MacBook Pro - turns off without warning when no AC

2009-02-06 Thread James Devenish
Hi Steven,

You're right that PMU applies to PowerPC hardware only. For Intels,
it's SMC (System Management Controller), so search for that instead.
Battery Calibration can be a problem -- if the battery cannot guage
its capacity properly then you will have premature cut-outs. You can
re-calibrate the battery by following the instructions in your
hardware User Guide (I think the rule of thumb is once per month to be
on the safe side over the life of the battery).

James.

Obviously it's got a lot worse since I noticed it. I could only just
tell it was bulging when when the battery was in, but it was obvious
when I took it out. I then left it out for a week while on holiday.
After that I couldn't get it back in. It was at that point it was
rejected for replacement.
My original email should have read - Apple said if the battery is
removable In other words if it is not stuck in. That made me
angry - no logic there!
So you can take the battery out for inspection, it won't matter.

MacBook Pro Battery Warning

2009-01-28 Thread Travis Hansen
Thought I would share this as it might help someone else:

I have a MacBook Pro (17) which will turn 2 years old in April. About
a month ago it started to randomly shutdown - and I mean like instant
shutdown, no warning! After some googling, I discovered it's a common
problem with this model's battery, and that it's also prone to
battery bulging. So I took the battery out for inspection and sure
enough it had begun bulge. Further research (as mentioned previously
on WAMUG) led me to Apple's article extending the warranty from 1 to 2
years for MBP battery bought up to April 2007 (mine just scrapes in).

So I took the battery to an Apple service centre on Scarb Beach Rd

Happy New Year all,

When I had my 19 Acer as the second monitor with my MacBook on start-

many different possibilities and clicking sounds before settling on my
preference setting.

Now the Acer is attached to my new iMac it won't go to my preference
setting I have to reset it in
preferences each time to the same calibrated setting that used to work
(eventually) with the MacBook.

I can make guesses as to what's going on, e.g. the new driver doesn't
bother with old CRTs anymore.

? Screen warning

2008-12-29 Thread Jennifer and Dick Lefroy

Hello Everyone,

When I wake up my Mac OS X Version 10.5.6, the display shows and then
switches off momentarily. It then comes on and stays on. This has
only started over the last few days and I wonder if it warns of
something more dire happening later?

A Happy New Year to you all and thanks for the generous help.

USB Ethernet - 10.5.6 - Warning

2008-12-18 Thread David Moyle
Hey all

Warning - If you use an Apple Ethernet adapter to get around a broken
port etc on any PPC machine updating will 10.5.6 will leave you
stuck. Still unsure whether its related to a glitch or a deliberate
attempt on Apple's behalf.

Symptoms will include long boot times, not able to access Network
panel in System Preferences and obvisouly.. no network activity on
that interface! =)

Cheers
Thanks, David Moyle

Re: WARNING AND SORRY

2008-04-22 Thread pweaver
I don't think Peter has anything to be sorry about. I got the same
immediate response after I sent a message to the WAMUG server and I
hadn't looked at his or anyone elses posts for a couple of days. The
message that came through had a link to a Russian chat list.

Kind wishes, Paul.

A thousand apologies for including that website address and I do hope
you don't get flooded with spam.

I thought the offers were too good to be true.

Yes, I also got it when I sent my last post (not a reply) to WAMUG - does
that mean the problem is now on the WAMUG server?

happening after

it MAY have only started coincidentally with that email .

Leopard-Back To My Mac Security Warning

2007-10-29 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi WAMUGers,

Leopard is 'One Cool Cat', I'm loving it. I have not found anything
'yet' to complain about,
everything is working so well. I feel my Airport Network is faster
than in Tiger.

I have been using 'Back To My Mac' successfully, but have just read
this from TidBITS,

so will be turning this feature off until Apple responds.

Back to My Mac Security Warning** -- Alan Oppenheimer and Open Door
Networks are cautioning Leopard users to turn off the Back to My Mac
feature due to a security vulnerability that enables anyone with
access to your .Mac account password to control your Mac remotely.
Back to My Mac is located in the .Mac preference pane, and is
enabled by default. [Open Door has now posted more details.]

http://www.isfym.com/site/blog/Entries/2007/10/27_Don’t_go_Back_to_My_Mac.html

http://www.isfym.com/Site/Blog/Entries/2007/10/29_More_about_Back_to_My_Mac.html

They write: The problem came in when we selected the server Mac in
the client's sidebar. Instead of either connecting to that Mac's
File Sharing as a guest, or asking us for that Mac's password, Back
to My Mac automatically connected to the server Mac's File Sharing
as that Mac's owner without ever asking for the owner's name and
password. Worse yet, the same thing happened when then clicking on
'Share Screen...' giving us full remote control of the Mac without
 ever entering its password.

Cheers,

Ronni
