Re: PLEASE Pray for my Charity....
Oh Patti I wish I was there to help you and sweet Charity.I hope she starts to feel better soon, and you can get her to the Dr. Sherry [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As most of you remember, Charity [feral mom dumped w/ babies] I have a long controversial history.. [She got out of taped-up box, so I had Timmy Thomas as bottle babies. ] I was able to trap her, but she escaped while I was cleaning her crate [post spaying thank heavens]. I decided not to re-trap her since I had a special area for ALL the strays/ferals here. And, also, she had me in ER so many times... Clearly, she disliked humans, and after being tossed out like trash I couldn't blame her. I believed she had been somebody's cat once upon a time when she had babies, well, they DUMPED them (Education IS the key. Spay/Neuter all your babies) So, I believed as long as she always had food shelter [here], it would be less stressful than trying to re-trap her. And, she had her constant companion, Black Bart However, life can change so fast... I had my MVA, my room mate was NOT tending my stray/feral area when I finally got home from hosp., o my way to Dr. I saw Charity running across the very heavily traveled, busy road I live on So, despite all my handicaps I made a promise right then that I would tend to my stray/feral area... Even opened up the barn so they could get indoors when weather turned bad.. So, I was very concerned about the cats I'd been tending to, but, I managed to hobble out to barn area to feed water, put fresh bedding out, etc. (And barn is W-A-Y back in yard, never a problem before MVA, but after, well, it's very difficult for me to get there) But, da_n it, I made a promise to these lost souls.. I was thrilled when I saw Charity Bart back in the area.. Made me even more determined to get out there so they wouldn't wander get killed on the road.. Which I did. But, the snow and ice this winter really made it even more difficult.. But, despite my problems, I kept barn open, re-insulated spots, etc. NOT EASY, but I somehow managed to get it done. After all, I made a promise So, one snowy night early Feb.. while I was out walking my Rottie, [Lady]Bug, who's bigger than me no less, lo behold, guess who stalks me out? Miss Charity Now mind you, Bug is deaf, I'm almost blind [great combination, huh?]... I heard this pitiful plea, couldn't see who it was, but Bug, who lives loves all my furbabies, saw her {Charity}, went totally ballistic - strange cat in her territory... When I finally realized it was Charity, I was mortified to say the leastJust imagine the thoughts running thru my head - me falling, Bug getting off leash Charity's demise...ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIC, that's putting it mildly.. Somehow I managed to get Bug back into house. But sweet Charity was on a mission... She NEVER gave up, and actually came waited for me on back porch - something she never did! So, when I went back out, w/ a carrier no less, I decided the time was right.. But, not having any strength on my right arm, it was a disaster, to say the least.Neither of us would give up..And, she insisted I hobble on the snow/ice out to barn! She was patient w/ me, but a tad irritated.. She knew what she had to do So, we finally get out to barn, where I thanked the lord I had my recliner [Boy, did I ever need that!!!] Lo behold My Bart was there! And obviously in VERY poor shape! And, this mean 'ole intact feral came right up to me, rubbing my legs! I was shocked! He had never approached me prior, always ran off when he caught a mere glance, and now he was almost a love muffin. Something was off. Big time He looked very ill - skinny, bloated in abdomen, you name it, I actually though e was another stray/feral - until I saw his shrunken equipment...Then I just knew it was our Bart. So, I set him up, made an emergency appt. deep down inside, my heart was broken.. While waiting the 2 days for appt., , he ate very well, turned into a love-muffin, I kind of got my hopes up...BIG MISTAKE!! At my vet, Dr. V. started to drain fluid, I finally asked him to stop. Also, Bart was pale white, all over almost NOT a good sign. He was also mostly blind.. Among numerous other things NO WAY TO EXIST. So, I made the dreaded decision.Very, very hard. but thought Bart would NOT have the [or any] quality of life. [And, he was an old man.] Ok, now to Charity. We DID have a vet. appt.soon after, but I had to cancel because three was NO way to get her in carrierWane a compete exam, including BW, but never got there. And, she was doing so well. My primary concern was Puma, I must admit... Now get this. Thurs. PM she

I suppose it was just too much for her to overcome. The anemia never really did improve much. Though her breathing was better, her skin was so pale. The last few days, her appetite faltered again, and she was getting weaker. I didn't think today would be the day she died, though i'm relieved she didn't have to go on suffering much longer. I don't think she was in pain, and I sincerely hope she wasn't in pain at the end. It was just so hard to see her so weak when she was as active and happy as a kitten 3 weeks ago. Kisa is going to be missed more than words can say. She never quite saw her 3rd birthday, but the time she spent with us will never be forgotten. She was special in so many ways, I wouldn't even know where to start to list them all. Fearless, loving, gentle, playful, curious, and sweet are just a few of the words that describe her. It is very dangerous. Yesterday, my husband was about 20 feet behind a tractor that had a brush mower on it which was operated by his friend. My husband was looking for items that may have been sticking out of the ground that the mower didn't get. Anyway, a huge rock flew out from the mower and my husband said he seen it at the corner of his eye. By then it was too late. The rock hit him on his right arm below the elbow and broke his arm in two places. I had to call 911 for help he was bleeding and going into shock. He was taken to the hospital and had x-rays done on him. The time was around noontime that this happened. My Dr. was on call who is a orthopedic surgeon had to do emergency surgery on him. I have a lot of faith in him as he done my knee replacements and other bone surgeries. One of the bones is shattered in my husband's arm and he said it look like a gunshot wound. He was taken into surgery about 5 pm was returned back to his room about 9:15 pm last night. The Dr. told me he was bad that he could lose his arm especially below the elbow. He has muscle and tissue damage. Many fragments of the bone was floating in his arm. Did what he could do for him at this point. Only time will tell. Since, my husband is a Diabetic and has HEP C from tainted blood in the 60's from a blood transfusion he is considered high risk. He has a tube in him that they call a Vacu this is to suck all the infection and excess blood from the area. He is also on two different IV lines for the loss of blood and for antibiotics. He is being monitored closely. I did noticed his blood pressure was high. So he will be in the hospital for at least some time. He will be taken back into surgery tomorrow to check out more of the damage and try to repair more of his arm. By the way my husband is right handed this is the arm that got injured. Some of you already know he just had two recent right shoulder surgeries on the same arm. He was supposed to return back to work for light duty on the 19th of this month. Believe it or not he was looking forward going back to work after being off for almost a year. Now that this has happened I don't know what we are going to do. Please pray and hope he doesn't lose part of his arm. That he makes full recovery. I watched him slowly decline for nearly 2 months until he crashed and I was sure he would die. Amazingly he bounced back and gave me another good 8 weeks with him. Except during this time I had to watch Koda and Kisa (Tomi's close buddy) get sick and die, so I didn't get to spend as much time with my Tomi as I would have liked. Then just a few days after Kisa died on June 12, Tomi got sick and crashed again with the anemia. He was having a hard time breathing, and again he bounced back. Last week he had a huge appetite, eating everything I gave him, and drank lots of water. Yesterday, he started to crash again. Today, he was eating a little bit of liver I gave him and still drinking, but his breathing was becoming more labored. Then around noon, he began panting, and I watched him die in a way that will haunt me forever. He was so scared and crying because he couldn't catch his breath. Re: Monkee is gone
Caroline I am so sorry for your loss of sweet Monkee(love the name)Hugs to you. Sherry Caroline Kaufmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My beloved cat Monkee passed last night in my arms while I held him with my Mom standing next to my side. At about 2:30 a.m. We were going to take him to Dr. Maier's for euthanasia this morning at 8:00 a.m. I thought he could make it until then and that he wouldn't want to go to a strange emergency vet clinic he'd never been to before for his passing. I didn't know he was that bad. I feel so bad. It was so horrible. He was having some trouble breathing, but I was usually able to calm him down by holding him and giving him flower essences. He had begun to have trouble walking and he would cry at me really loudly when he wasn't able to do something he wanted to do because his brain was not getting enough oxygen (like walk around). I didn't want him to be in pain or suffer and I feel like I failed him. He did go really quick, but I was hysterical as it was happening. We were on my bed and I was holding him. He took a last gasp of air and then he stopped. When his body when limp, I felt like I might die too. I think the only thing that helped me and my mom was that she has rescue remedy with her and we both took it right away. It sounds odd to say that, but immediately after it happened, I felt a sense of peace-- for him. I think the rescue remedy helped my breathing at that time. I just held him afterwards and talked to him and pet him and kissed him for about two hours. I told him how wonderful he was and that I would never be the same without him. I walked around the house, sat with him on the porch he loved so much and took him outside for his last time to hold him while sitting on the front steps. I have never had an animal die in my arms like that and to have it be my best friend-- the best companion I've ever had...my heart just feels like it's wrenching in half. I feel guilty and traumatized. I am having a hard time erasing the memories of his passing. When I close my eyes, I see his face as he took his last breath. I don't how to recover from that. I've never been lonely since I had Monkee and now that he's gone, that loneliness is crashing in. I hope all of you are able to continue to care for your cats and give them the peace and love that they so desperately need. I admire those of you who take care of multiple FelV cats and have lost some in the past and continue to keep doing the work that you do. My thoughts and my prayers are now with all of you and your babies. I felt like I didn't have the mental energy to devote many of my prayers in the past few weeks to any cat other than Monkee, but I will be praying for you now. I also wanted to remind everyone that you never really know the power of what love can do for a cat like Monkee, until you experience it. When I found him, he was a crazy, dirty, little ragamuffin eating doves, baby rabbits, and whatever else he could catch in the courtyard of my law school apartment complex in Northern Ky 4 years ago. And four years and 1 month ago, I couldn't take his living it up in the killing fields- as I called it- anymore. It took so long to get him to be a somewhat normal cat. Something bad must have happened to him because he was already neutered when I found him, so he had to have belong to someone. He was deathly afraid of men and it took until probably about this past year for that fear to almost subside. I don't think anyone else in my life (other than myself) believed that he'd ever be trusting, cuddling, sweet, lfunny, love-bug that he was with me. The first time I turned on my radio and my tv after I had brought him into my life, he freaked out and hid under the bed for hours. After lots of love and being spoiled rotten, and having four years to experience as many things as possible, he had truly become my best friend. He would comfort me when something went horribly wrong in my life and the past 4 years have been pretty turbulent for me so he had a lot of comforting to do. He was what always cheered me up when I was at my lowest low and he was what kept going. He slept on my bed with me every night and even when I was just away for one night, I would miss him and miss having him there in the morning to wake up with. I am going to miss him so much. I also wanted to say Thank You for being such an instant support group for Monkee and I. We really needed help these past few weeks and you all really came through for us. Jenna your story of your beautiful Satine has me in tears. It is the hardest thing to go through when you love them so much. She was lucky to have the both of you.I went through it with my Maizee Grace almost 2 years ago and this really hit me hard. I have seen people go kicking and screaming and while in trauma that might be more beneficial, in the case of terminal illness it makes it harder. So after that experience (this was with my grandmother) I told myself that if this happened with my animals- i wanted it to be gentle and peaceful. I started having a feeling that it was going to be on sunday because i started getting a song in my head about a relationship ending that is from Aspects of love by Andrew Lloyd Weber. The song is Tell me on a sunday. Don't write a letter when you want to leave Don't call me at 3 a.m. from a friend's apartment I'd like to choose how I hear the news Take me to a park that's covered with trees Tell me on a Sunday please Don't leave in silence with no word at all Don't get drunk and slam the door That's no way to end this I know how I want you to say goodbye Find a circus ring with a flying trapeze Tell me on a Sunday please That day - on sunday- she was in the bathroom and she was breating very heavy. Her eyes were very diated. I bent down around her and sang her Complainte De La Butte from Moulin Rouge. For the first time all weekend she raised her head and looked at me. She purred so loud. I told her I loved her and if she wanted to go it was okay. I got a feeling that she understood. The song goes: Petite mandigotte je sens ta menotte qui cherche ma main Je sens ta poitrine et ta taille fine J'oublie mon chagrin Je sens sur tes lèvres une odeur de fièvre de gosse mal nourri Et sous ta caresse je sens une ivresse qui m'anéantit The stairways up to la butte can make the wretched sigh while windmill wings of the moulin shelter you and I I sang to her for about 15 minutes and pet her, even though I could feel each vertebrate of her little back bone. She did not shy away that time. I went back to the living room and laid down, but didnt' sleep. It was exhausting. My husband went into the bathroom and stayed a long time. I knew he was talking with her. When he was done, I could see he had been crying. When i woke up I sat at my computer. About 20 minutes later my dog, Carmel got very whiney and would not settle down. She was upset about something. I went into the bathroom and found that satine had passed. She was stretched out like she would when she was comfortable and when I said kitty and shook her she didn't move. I went out side and told my husband she was gone. He said he knew that he talked with her. He told her that she was surrounded by love and she would always be loved. He said she picked her head up and meowed at him. He said he thinks she knew what he was saying and that she was waiting for him to be okay before she left. I agree with this. He hugged each other and cried a long time. I had put her carrier together before hand in preperation for when I would need it. I picked her up to put her in it. Her body was totally slack and her head fell all the way back like a rag doll when I picked her up. (I'm telling you this so you can be ready for it)I held her to my chest and cried- no wept - over her- and i cried hard- for a long time. I put her in the carrier and covered the front of it with a towel. My husband called the vet and said that she had passed. We took her to the vet and picked out an urn for her and left her there to pick her up again when we got her ashes. That night I could not relax to sleep. Tracy I am so sorry about your sweet Sylvester. He was near the one who loved him in his last moments.Hugs to you Sherry Tracy Weese [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My giant (well, he used to be) ol' farm cat died this morning at home. Sylvester came off a farm where I take care of a dwindling (thanks to TNR) cat colony. He got very sick about 2 years ago and I took him to the vet...of course it was more than being sick, he had FeLV+. So he came home with my other cats (I had few other positives then, after today down to two now and soon to be one-CW is anemic and fading, too). He was big when I got him, about 16 pounds despite being so ill. After many at the vets' and then living at home, he was up to 22 lbs! He stayed pretty healthy for about 1 year and 4 months (he was probably 7 when I got him). He always had a little cough the vets thought was asthma (and yes, we checked and re-checked this). But recently, he was not the same, more coughing, high fever, not eatingturns out his blood counts were all haywire. Low RBC, Low white count and low plateletsthe antibiotics for the fever made his tummy hurt, too. So at the vet yesterday I asked if it was time to let him go (he lost 2 lbs in a week), the vet didn't think so bec. of course, he perked up at the vets' and purred and pranced...He got a vitamin B12 shot and his very first steroid shot (yes, we discussed that steriods in a FeLV+ cat were a last resort). When we got home, he had a good night. He ate some, and hung out with me and the others (he had been staying under the bed except when I would drag him out for meds). He even played some and tried to squeeze into a tiny box like he used to. This morning I awoke to a few sounds of slight distresshe was sleeping under the bed again (actually, the cats tore the bottom fabric of the box springs and he would sleep inside the box springs). I reached down and touched him and told him I was there and then went to get a carrier to go to the vet. In the seconds it took for me to run downstairs and get the carrier and come back up, he was gone. I had to cut the rest of the fabric to get him since he would lay furtherst from the opening. I pulled him out and he was still, he looked very peaceful--no signs of struggle on him or under the bed. This is the very first cat I have had that died at home (and I have a cabinet full of cremated remains)...it was not terrible, but I did not plan it. Last night was so good for him, I guess he had only one last good night in him. He died with me nearby and in the place he felt safest, under the bed. I took him to the vets' so he can be cremated. I don't think he suffered but a few short seconds if that. I gave him permission several days ago to leave if he needed to, I guess he needed to go today. Although I will miss him, several of my other cats will not. He was a gentle giant, but a few of my smaller cats terrorized him if they got the chance. He never struck out first and usually retreated, but he was always a sweetie to people. Please think good thoughts for Sylvester. - Looking for a deal? Genevieve
Well I took my beautiful girl to the clinic last night to get her on sub q fluids.Dr. Jen went out to check on her to see how bad she was.(she was not at work)she told me she fears the worse. That she may have fluid in her chest cavity. She warned me that when she sedates her that she may pass,or if there is fluid it would be best to let her go while already under. I am going out there this morning to see her before the sedation. My heart is so heavy right now I am sick. Please say a little prayer for my precious girl. His eye looked like it had literally exploded - red/pink and white tissue comiing out and the eye dripping. Dr. Smith found that his heart rate is up, he is having eye redness w/discharge, his stomach is beginning to collect fluid and I believe his temperature was up too. Prognosis is that his felv is on the rise, so to say. He received a cocktail shot of Depo Medrol, Dexamethasone B-12 some eye drops to be given TID. And he told me that this was all we were going to do, and I am to call him daily w/ reports. Once they start having the neuro problems, it never goes back to normal. I am going to accept this, my funds are always tight Dr. Smith knows this. He also knows that I am in the felv+ kitty club for good, and he knows also how many more special needscats I have. And he has seen this condition so many times,so, he knows what he is dealing with. He stressed 2 things for Pappy, good nutrition w/ supplements stress free lifestyle as possible. Those are the keys to the felv+ kingdom right now. I also think what Tad posted a while back made alot of sense, that we take them in, knowing they are going to die sooner rather than later, and it will hurt us, but we go on. We just do the best that we can do for these cats that not many people will open their homes to. And it is not their fault, continously dealing w/ the death of a beloved pet is hard on our souls. I understand why folks cannot do this on a regular basis. We are blessed to have them, in so many ways, and it hurts when they pass, but we just hold them in their final hours and tell them they are the best little kitty in the whole wideworld. But until then, everyday that we have them we greet them w/a smile and we tell them how much we love them and how much they mean to us.. :) Susan J. Hi Glenda thank you for checking out Crashs.I first of all want to say that I too am not one for declawing!! As some of our rescue cats do come in already declawed and yes they are declawed if they are not too old.As much as I hate to say it,people (unlike you and I) would prefer to adopt cats already declawed. :( Also think about over 100 cats living under the same roof. Most get along but there could be many bad wounds from fights. Like I said I believe as does Jen the lady that runs the places that ALOT of cats are discarded out into the streets because they claw the furniture and etc. And they don't take the time to try and train them to do differently.I clip all my cats claws myself.I personally don't like it.But I can't tell her how to run her shelter :( I respect ALL that Jen does for the over 200 cats that she takes in and can't say anything bad about what she does.I am sorry if it hurts you and I respect your opinion. Thanks for your good wishes on our sweet Brian.Oh,also all 4 of my boys came from Sids and they are beautiful and healthy!!! If you go back and look up Mystique at Sids, she is probably my next baby to bring home since I lost my beautiful Genevieve. Also in the tabbies at Crashs check out Honeysuckle.I rescued her and her 5 kittens from my backyard. My boyfriend has the kittens at his house,we are trying to get homes for them. My heart just sank! Is that their policy? If it is my heart is as broken for the guys that are FeLV- as for the guys that are FeLV+. Please let me know what is going on there with the declawing or please tell me it was a computer glitch. Thank you Sherry. Glenda I DO NOT hate anybody, but I do get tired of defending the way Crash's landing is run.It is run by a licensed vet and she is a wonderful human with a big heart. The fiv cats are vaccinated for felv and yes we know it is not 100% safe. But it is either this or death. We love each and every one of those cats with all our hearts and yes ALL the volunteers are very kind people. It is a no kill shelter and I am very proud of being a part of it.Not everyone is EVER going to agree on EVERYTHING that people do.So we just should respect each other for the loving we have for these animals in our lives. glenda Goodman [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sherry, She is absolutely beautiful. I have to tell you, when I realized the thinking behind how your shelter, where you volunteer, with the declawing policy and reading about the section for the special needs kitties I thought I would ask if the FIV+ kitties were mixed with the FeLV+ kitties. I do not think I am surprised... Sherry I am trying to control my emotions ,but I have to tell you I am scared to death for these two groups of cats. I am believing/hoping your girl Mystique is vaccinated...that could help, but she is at terrible risk. Her immune system is already compromised by the FIV. I cannot implore you strongly enough to please get her out of Crash'slanding ASAP! You have been lucky with your FIV kitties and especially with your kitty who threw the FIV. When I read about the beautiful Mystique, I felt relieved that she was only FIV+. I felt you would have good luck with her and she might live a pretty normal life. The fact she is in a situation where she can contract the FeLV virus any day now, is making me a little crazy...I worry about her and everyone else in that environment...and what about the kitties that might possibly be able one day, to throw one of the viruses or the other? What chance do any of them really have...They are at huge risk of getting THE OTHER virus. There has to be a way to seperate the two groups. FIV+ kitties have such a better chance , but here they are almost certainly, over time going to become FeLV+ too. You need to get Mystique out of there. You should have her tested for both FIV and FeLV, just so you know, what you will be dealing with. Then have her tested again in 4-6 months. If she is FeLV- you are both blessed. If I were you, I'd want to know, for myself, if she is really FIV+. Crash'slanding comes across beautifully on it's intro page and it is set up well to navigate through. The kitties are beautiful. Their stories are well written and touching. This is a nokill shelter, right? The way it appears to me, is a showplace type of place, that collects cats, donations ,but seriously needs to become a bit more cat- friendly...Besides taking in these cats, are they really doing what is best for each cat? If they cannot seperate the FIV+ cats from the FeLV+ cats they should only be dealing with cats with one disease or the other disease and let another shelter deal with the other... Do they get a lot of volunteers as sweet as you? Well, they are lucky if they do. Nobody is driving a cadillac are they...bad joke, sorry. I have one FeLV+ cat in my household of 7-cats. All my cats are vaccinated. Yet I am very, very careful my negatives do not come into contact with my one positive, little girl. If I found out I had a FIV+ cat in my household I would possibly allow him to continue as always with his brothers, but if anyone were to turn up FeLV+ it is quarantine time. FIV is a far easier disease to deal with. I'm in the process of having all my guys tested again, because my guys do get outside at times, supervised, as they are and as confident as I am they have not run into any positive, strange kitties out there, I still believe in knowing their health status every year or so...This, because I do not believe in putting any of my kitties in harm's way. If I were perfect, they would never get outside, at ever, but I love for them to have fun in the yard...I get weak when they beg...I am a bad mommy for that, but I take that risk for the, quality of life, argument... Well, I have done enough damage for one day...Sherry, thank you. And please do not hate me, because ...I do not trust people... Susan yes you are entitled to your opinion. But do you seriously think death would be a better alternative!! We are not hoarders and I guess I made it sound like it when I said she can't say no. She does have to say enough is enough from time to time.Like right now,we can't take in anymore until we have more adoptions.Periodically we have to.We have a list to get cats into our program and it is a LONG one.So we are not hoarders at all.Just the space we have for the felv and fiv is what it is.We do not declaw the felv fiv cats.Wish we didn't the others, but that is not my decision. So I don't want anybody to be horrified at the wonderful shelters that I am proud to volunteer at.We are far from being hoarders, sorry if I made it sound like that.We have well over 100 volunteers to help out and we do a damn good job. If anyone of you visited anyone of our shelters you would see how HAPPY the beautiful creatures are.I am done defending!! [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: The phrase comes to mind, The road to hell is paved with good intentions. :( I have no doubt whoever is running this shelter has the best of intentions. One of my girls, the one I think was the first positive, came from just such a shelter (Angel Wings in Kingston, TN). I know this lady had only the best of intentions in her heart, and I know she loved the kitties she tried to provide care for. But I also know she didn't know how to say No. And a lot of innocent kitties suffered as a result. It was a heartbreaking situation altogether :( Look, I have to know every day when to say No. My heart aches for some poor kitties I see at local shelters and adoption agencies, but I know I am not capable of caring for more than the three I have, and I know that to bring healthy, negative cats into a situation where they're at high risk of contracting FeLV is irresponsible. I've replaced my sofa twice now due to kitty claws (FINALLY got them all trained. It IS possible.) but I'd never dream of declawing, and I think most people are horrified here at the thought of a shelter using declawing as a standard policy. Its unimaginable. Even the lady I mentioned above gave me a very long lecture about declawing and made me sign contracts that I wouldn't do it. Siamese Rescue done the same thing when I adopted my other two. I think everyone here is horrified that, as you pointed out, she can't say no. We all must recognize our limits. I am not saying you, or the woman who runs this shelter, are bad people, but even the best of intentions can be devastating (as I know personally.) Hoarders love the cats they have, they just don't know when to say no. Same goes for this situation, I think. Our hearts just ache that as horrible as FIV and FeLV is, we have to live with the knowledge that this shelter is mixing them, and mutilating their little paws in the process. Its just painful. Its not personal attacks on you, or to say that you don't have the best of intentions in your heart. Reminds me of a story I heard on NPR on my way home, talking about zero gravity effects on bacteria. They were talking about infecting mice with salmonella to see how long it would take them to die. It was just painful to listen to. :( Michael - See what's new at AOL.com and Make AOL Your Homepage. - Looking for a deal? Find great prices on flights and hotels with Yahoo! FareChase.

Hell, I'm probably the youngest person here, at twenty, and I'm finding this all rather ridiculous. Everyone here was really supportive when I was dealing with Olive's sickness, but it kind of upsets me that even more people could have helped, that there were people who used to be on here who might have had even better suggestions than the great ones that I received. Yeah, there probably wasn't much more I could've done for Olive, regardless of what people could tell me. But the thing is, it's SCARY that people have left over stupid bickering, when we NEED those people to help us with our sick babies. The more people there are, the more experience there is, and therefore more information is available. This list has made a difference for many people, but it could make a difference for so many more. Honestly, the fact that people have left simply because they couldn't get along with a couple of other people disgusts me. I guess if someone REALLY needs to leave, that's one thing. But over some petty bickering? Come on. I'm sure someone will find something to bitch at me for, but you know what? I don't care. I'm mature enough to just ignore it. And it's funny, because I don't even have a FeLV+ kitty anymore, yet I'm still on here. Really, the arguing doesn't bother me too much, aside from filling up my inbox. She was very weak and so I would smear Nutri Cal on her paws and squirt Pedialyte in her mouth. After every treatment she would perk up and the vomiting stopped that night. She still had diarrhea the next morning but I was able to get her to start eating the prescription food off my fingers. Today she is playful, but thin. Re: Kitten update Take 2
Hi Caroline,I have never heard of them needing a sample straight from the cats butt to check for Giardia.I have left samples in the fridge at the shelter for it to be checked and it showed up in my Genevieves when I first brought her home. And thank goodness none of the boys caught it!! Sherry Caroline Kaufmann [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: .hmmessage P { margin:0px; padding:0px } body.hmmessage { FONT-SIZE: 10pt; FONT-FAMILY:Tahoma }I got the results of Yoda's fecal back and it's totally negative- even the flotation. Now I don't know what to do and I pretty much told the Doctor that (what do I do!?). He doesn't seem to think it's from the antibiotic. Yoda was the first started on it at Labor Day and he was on it 10 days, so he's been off it a long time. I was also surprised that none of the kittens had diarrhea while actually on Amoxy (Monkee always got soft stools when on Clavamox). Anyway, he said it could be a virus of some kind, but it's definitely not bacterial or parasites. He asked about their exposure- which is basically nill, so he was fine with that. He said it could still be giardia because that doesn't show up in a fecal-- that they need the sample immediately because giardia is like bubbles and you can see them really clearly under a microscope if you get the sample immediately-- pretty much from butt to microscope (that's what he said- not me)-- but within a few seconds, they start to burst I guess and then you can't see them. This is how he described it. I told him the diarrhea smells HORRIBLE and he said h... He wanted to know when it started and I guessed about Monday. He said that is not too much time so he isn't worried yet. He said to try giving them all Liquid Immodium AD- 1/4 teaspoon and see if that helps. If not, we will try some other things (I guess looking for giardia). I'm going to give it this weekend I guess. I have two thoughs: #1) it's a random virus that they could have picked up when we went to Sat. cat adoption day. Although I kept all mine in a separate pen and they did not meet any of the condo cats at the store, they were in the same general area and if it's possible they could get an airborne stomach virus just by being in the same area, maybe that's it? #2) it's giardia and the vet will need Yoda's actual butt to diagnosis it! I came home early from work and Yoda had yet another diarrhea in his box. He was eating dry crunchies when I came in. I immediately gave everyone their Immodium. No sooner had I done that and Yoda had two more separate piles of even runnier, smellier diarrhea (and not to mention, he trashed his crate afterward-- he does it on purpose)! Urgh. He gets away with it because he's cuter than cute and the lil b*stard knows it! I know I need to give the Immodium more of a chance...but still?! If it continues this weekend, I will just drop Yoda off on Monday and say, here's his butt...have at it; I'm sure he'll give you a 'sample' in all of like 2 minutes! One of grey ones that are crated together threw up dry food this morning-- just a little bit of it and into their water bowl. It happened while I was at work so I don't know who did it. No one has ever thrown up since I've had them. I don't know if it means anything tho-- it really looked like the cat just ate too fast without chewing because the crunchies were all pratically whole! A kittens...they are so much trouble! I guess I rested on my laurels with them after we beat the URIs so I probably deserve this! Happily tho, I now got my coop cups in the mail so no more spilling our waters and trashing our crates and barfing in our waters! I'm so excited! She was purring and happy when it happened and she passed peacefully. She was my beautiful 18.5 year old Maine Coon who lived a charmed life and was spoiled to no end. She was a very, very sweet kitty and was never aggressive to anyone or to any fellow animal ever. Her little body had just had it from the hyperT and CRF, and after this last week, I knew it was time. It was such a difficult decision to make though. Part of me felt like it was not my place to make that decision; after all I did not create her life. The other part knew that I could never let her suffer the way my Cricket did when he died from FeLV-related anemia. I knew it would be a matter of days for her and I wanted her to pass without suffering. I took off work to spend the day with her and she had a great day, even being as weak as she was. She enjoyed being outside in the sun; it was a beautiful day. I just want to thank everyone here for your help and encouragment with all my kitties and for being such great listeners. Re: Tiny one year ago
Sally thank you for sharing your story with us.Hugs to you... Sherry and my 5 beautiful fur kids Sally Davis [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I posted this to the Angels on My Shoulder group, but I will share my feelings here too It was one year ago that my precious Tiny went on to the Rainbows Bridge. Everyone deals with Grief differently. I lost four cats that year including Tiny. I was not expecting my Tiny to leave me so soon. He was a little over 5 years old. A neighbor's child brought him to me as a kitten saying her parents were going to get rid of it. She said a cat had kittens under their porch. I did not really believe the story but I took the tiny kitty and gave him a home. He looked to me not even old enough to be separated from his mom. He would later develop a habit of making biscuits in my hair. He did this all his short life. He also would sleep on my head. Purring loudly. I mean literally on my head or he would use it as a pillow. All his life he had an occasional cough. I worried that it was asthma or heart worms. I will never know. The spells were short lived and then he seemed fine. Summer of 2006 he had a vicious coughing spell that literally knocked him off his feet. He also had a cold. I took him to the vet. He was given antibiotics and got better. Several of my other cats got sick too. All with cold like symptoms. Junior his half brother, same mom she was feral, had been hit by a car that spring and stayed inside recuperating. He too got sick and had anemia on top of the cold. Long story short I wound up losing Pumpkin who was hiding symptoms from me and not eating. He was anemic and jaundiced when taken to the vet. Two day later I had to take him back and he stayed on IV for two days. Seemed better the second night there he crashed. He was a shell of himself and I had him PTS. I took Junior back to his vet to make sure he was ok because he had similar symptoms. He had a fever of 106.5 so they kept him. The vet called later wanted to do a feline leukemia test and it was positive. Turned out Tiny was positive too. Junior already had classic symptoms. Tiny was over his cold and never showed symptoms. I also had another positive cat who was PTS as he was also positive for FELV and FIV. He had also been sick. I would have probably done that differently had I known what I know now. The rest of my cats were ok and vaccinated. Tiny had been a little under the weather, but nothing earth shattering or I would have had him checked out. Christmas day it rained all day. Tiny seems a little distressed, but then again not anything that would indicate what would happen. I watched TV with him and I got up to check my emails. I heard that same violent cough as the summer before. I rushed to the living room. to move him. I though he would vomit. His gums were already turning blue. I gabbed the oxygen tank and it was empty. I went to get the concentrator which is my husbands. Checked on him we are talking less than a minute. His breathing calmed down and he was gone. I am told that it was probably a blood clot he threw and that he did not feel anything after the initial cough. I still wonder if there was something I missed in his short life that could have saved him. I buried him in the rain crying the whole time. It would seem his grave is probably a tad on the lot next to me. Junior still survives. I constantly worry about him. He currently has a URI that he can't seem to shake. Feline leukemia is a horrible disease. Thanks everyone for your comforting words when my Tiny Whiney left me. He was not an FELV cat, but possibly FIP. He was a struggling, failing to thrive white w/ grey kitten (who indeed looked like a Possum), who had a rough start in life and I took him in to give him TLC and see what I could do for him. Unfortunately, I was unable to get him the vet care he needed/deserved due to approval problems with the adoption group he belonged to/I volunteered for and I will forever regret that and feel guilty. But I know I gave him a wonderful few months that he wouldn't have had if I hadn't taken him in: he was kept warm, freed from the pet store condos, got the royalest treatment of all my fosters b/c I never made him stay in the condo-he had free reign of my two bedrooms, he slept on the bed with me curled in my arms or on my chest or shoulder every night and we had love-fest sessions every morning, with him purring away, he got the highest quality food and supplements, holistic vet treatments, and a little kitty heating pad that became his all time favorite thing. Sadly though, for whatever reason, whether it be FIP, a congenital heart defect, or both, his little body couldn't keep up with his mind and desire to live and he crashed without warning (besides a swollen belly) on me in the early morning hours of Sunday and I rushed him to the emergency vet clinic to end his suffering. He was a wonderfully sweet little boy and although he was more an old-man cat then the 7 mo kitten he was supposed to be, I loved him for who and what he was and I will miss him dearly, especially because he became my sleeper-bud and I haven't had one since Monkee left me in July. He was my first cat/foster kitten to die since Monkee and that makes it even more heartbreaking for me b/c the Monkee loss is still so fresh. I also wonder why they keep crashing on me on Sundays?! Re: Ember and the Scary Mistake
Lance I am so happy to hear Ember ( I love her name) is feeling a bit better. My Tristan who is not felv+ had a problem with loose stool and he gets a fiber capsule every night and it is normal now.Dr. Jen said it it IBS irritable bowel syndrome.Take care of your baby girl and I will keep thinking good thoughts for you. Sherry and my 5 beautiful furkids,Rafferty,CousCous,Xander,Tristan abd Mystique :) Lance [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I had a call in to the same vet late yesterday afternoon, and she got back to me earlier this morning. I wanted to clarify the doses, after doing some reading that alarmed me about Metronidazole. I don't want to give Ember more than she needs (or any, if it can be helped). I'm mostly okay with the outcome of the conversation. The vet wants me to only give Ember one 50mg pill a day, and only through Monday. I gave her the dose for today, so she only has two more. That seems more realistic to me. Given that Ember showed high bacterial overgrowth on her test, it will hopefully help to alleviate that, but it won't be going for so long (and with doses so high) as I'd originally been told. Ember is doing well as far as her behavior goes. I'm hoping to get her to snuggle down for a nap in a few minutes. She had a small but solid bm last night, and I'll probably try to get her back on a little dry food tomorrow. I'm really glad she likes to eat pumpkin! Thanks to all for your concern. It's a comfort to have you on my side when things aren't going so well. Lance On Jan 26, 2008, at 8:34 AM, Jane Lyons wrote: Computer error??? It sounds as though the vet made a 'scary mistake' and rather than honesty and responsibility, she is playing defense, which is equally scary. I would stop the Metronidazole. It seems that Ember had a violent reaction to the overdose and needs time to process that assault. Also, why Metronidazole? Wasn't her last stool normal? I do not understand why the vet is prescribing it. Did she run tests on her stool? What was her diagnosis? I wish your trusted vet were available to you (and Ember). Is there any way you can contact her or get a referral for a vet who has experience with FeLK. I would not trust someone who resorts to the 'computer error' card. How is Ember now? How have her stools been? Fingers still crossed. Jane On Jan 25, 2008, at 9:27 PM, Lance wrote: I talked to the vet we saw last night to ask about the odd exhaling Ember did. We discussed it for awhile, and she really couldn't say with any certainty what might have caused it. She said that Ember's lungs sounded good, and I would think that a lung problem would be a likely component in causing something like that. I'll just be paying close attention to see if it happens again. It's a really good thing I called, because I found out that Ember had been over-prescribed. Frankly, the whole thing sounds a little fishy to me, though I want to trust this vet. The label printed out and placed on the Metronidazole bottle was for two 50mg pills twice a day. The vet told me that should be for only 1 50mg pill twice a day. She also indicated that this is a small dose. She said that this is a computer error, but she also *told* me before I left that it was two pills twice a day. I wonder when she was planning on calling me about this! I gave Ember two pills last night and two this morning, but I will not give her any meds tonight, and I'm really not sure of what to do in general. I hate to critique someone who has vast amounts of education and experience over me. But, I'm concerned that this vet is not exactly sure of what's going on. When Ember had diarrhea a year and a half ago, another vet (who is now our normal vet) prescribed one 50mg Metronidazole once a day, and she only gave me five or so to give (i never did). Since Metronidazole is considered a potential carcinogen in people, and has, in admittedly rare cases, essentially destroyed an animal's nervous system, I'm really wishing I had a second opinion. I just don't want to haul Ember to another vet. Any thoughts? Lance - Be a better friend, newshound, and know-it-all with Yahoo! Mobile. Try it now.
