[LegacyUG] Error 3021-Dennis Murphy

2018-03-06 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls

Dennis,

Try a major clean up of your locations list. Remove all "USA" from
names. Then add it back. Then use the option to merge all of same
places. Go into the list, sort by City, County, State, Country. Do a
manual edit and merge of matching locations. Use the option to delete
all unused locations. Do all the cleanup and merging of locations possible.

Repeat: Remove all "USA" from names. Then add it back.

Error 3021

This is not the first fight with this Error Number but it's the first
one on which all the Help menu suggestions fail to solve. The final
resort and ultimate "import to Gedcom" has not and likely, will not,
be attempted due to it's source alterations.

I have run the Check & Repair multiple times, even twice in one
complete Maintenance session. I have rebooted computer, tried again.
Not sure if reinstalling the Legacy program will work but that may be
next.

The error message reads" Location 19152 not found (1009, 81) Error
3021" It pops up every time I try to export a portion of my large
database to smaller Legacy family files. Running File Maintenance on
the master or larger database produces no errors; it only happens on
the attempted extraction of portions of the larger file - at least
that's when I notice it always.

My questions:

Does "Location 19152" refer to a specific geographical location?

How or where can it be found?

Do the numbers in parentheses refer to individual ID numbers where
the location is missing?

I have the latest Legacy build but hope for a new update soon to see
if that will fix the problem. There seems to be a lot of glitches
still floating around in Version 9 as these error messages pop up
quite often. Usually they can be fixed by following the suggestions
but these LOCATION ones seem to be a bear on the loose. Please help:
I am open to any and all suggestions

Re: [LegacyUG] Find a Grave - Australia

2018-02-27 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
I paste the info into a new event for the person, called "Burial
Record". Use the data as a source if appropriate to add birth and death
dates and places, even parents, spouse, children, etc., if that is
included. Then look for more data from other sources to verify that data
is correct. I add the appropriate info to the description field. For
FindaGrave, that includes the "memorial number".

Then add the appropriate data to FamilySearch.org.

Michele,

I have AFN numbers in my data from old records. Only use now would be to
look for duplicate records. Do not need that field.

I do use the ID number field for the numbers assigned to individuals in
family genealogy books, and prefix the number with the book's author's
first initial. Example, B1 for Burleigh's first Ingalls, Edmund Ingalls,

[LegacyUG] Using Legacy for recording atDNA and Gedmatch.com for Ancient Heritage

2018-01-21 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
I add people who match my wife's atDNA or mtDNA or my mtDNA or yDNA or
atDNA test results to Legacy. I add info like "DNA Chr 1 Match to Jay"
to the "Name Suffix Field".

Then I use the Legacy Search, Find, Detailed Search, and search for

PRIMARY CONDITION

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Suffix

How to Look: Contains

What to Look For: Jay

SECOND CONDITION

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Suffix

How to Look: Contains

What to Look For: DNA

THIRD CONDITION

Look for Whom: Individual

Where to Look: Suffix

How to Look: Contains

What to Look For: 1

This finds all the people with the matching info. Lists all with 1, 11,
12, etc,

Works better for Chromosome 21 and similar numerals . Any suggestions
on how to eliminate 12, 12, etc. from my results would be appreciated.

Once I get the list, I can print it out using Options, Print. I have the
print List Print Options set as:

Surnames, Given Names

Sex

Born

Died

Spouse 1

Spouse 2

Relationship

Then I can either print the list or work from the screen list to check
for segment matches with me at FamilyTreeDNA.com or Gedmatch.com

Then I contact the closest matches, especially if I find common
ancestors in their ancestry data.

Works better than nothing!

If you are worried about your "ancient heritage", I suggest you add your
atDNA data to Gedmatch.com for free and use the tools there. It is also
worth while to add your gedcom file=pedigree chart to Gedmatch.com.
There are many tools you can use for free to check for your possible
ancient ancestry. And many tools for looking for cousins. I do recommend
removing dates and places for living people from your gedcom file.

And remember, paper trail genealogy will often be wrong no matter how
many records you find or where you find the records. Before penicillin
and more recent modern drugs, many parents and children died from
disease and the neighbors or relatives raised the children who lived,
often with no "adoption" records. There were many other reasons for
children and grandchildren never knowing who their parents or
grandparents really were!

This has been discussed before and, as I remember, the answer
is that the autosomal results are too massive to include in

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Is this a proper gedcom file

GEDCOM files are plain text, so you can open them in any word processor or
notepad program, such as Microsoft Word, OpenOffice Writer, or Windows
Notepad.

The first few lines will look something like this one, which I created from
Legacy:

0 HEAD
1 SOUR Legacy
2 VERS 9.0
2 NAME Legacy (R)
2 CORP Millennia Corp.
3 ADDR PO Box 9410
4 CONT Surprise, AZ 85374
1 DEST Legacy
1 DATE 20 Jun 2017

You'll be able to see people's names and other text displayed in various
lines, along with other lines that will seem to be gobbledegook but contain
information that relates to the people named.

1 NAME William /Hargreaves/
2 GIVN William
2 SURN Hargreaves
2 SOUR @S3@

So if you can open this .ged file you've been sent in an appropriate program
and see similar lines, you have a GEDCOM file, which you should be able to
IMPORT into Legacy.

It's good practice to import files like this into a new Legacy file before
merging the data with your existing file. You may want to look at things
like Locations, and tidy them up to the way you record them before taking
the data further.

Hope this helps. :-)

[LegacyUG] Events Disappeared!

Looked at my personal data in Legacy 9 today, noticed there were no

the missing events in a gedcom file backup from 1/14/2004.

Did the split screen import to add them into my current data. This is
scary! No idea how much data has been lost from my records!

Would appreciate other Legacy users checking your current file to see if
you are missing events for person number one (RIN number one) in your

I hope to check newer backups to see about when the data disappeared.
Can not do today.

Then go in Legacy to Options - Customise 6.2 and set that folder to your media

That will probably do it.
If not, make sure the flash drive isn't connected to the Win 10 laptop and run
Tools - Media Relinker.
Provided the media hasn't been buried many many layers down so the path and
filename are over 260 characters, the Media Relinker will find them.

There is a problem if the laptop has recently updated to Fall Creators Update
and still has the windows.old folder as that is crashing the Media Relinker

However - just setting Options-Customise 6.2 will probably result in the Media

If you tag and export every one you want in the pdf report to a new

caront...@prodigy.net,

What does your son-in-law want? All of his ancestors or all his children's ancestors? Do have only one
database. You can use the View, Split Screen, and have have the two files open side by side, then drag the
son-in-law's data into your data. Works best for me if I have the same person open in both files in side by
side pedigree views, drag "new" to "old", select everyone in file. Then merge. Repeat of
another person's advice, do not edit notes. I believe you can append OK, but best to copy notes for both
people to Notepad, then have the notes available after the merge is completed so you can paste them in if
they have disappeared or are "damaged".

Then tag the ancestors of the person you want to send to your son-in-law and
export the Legacy file for him if he is using Legacy.

Check for duplicates frequently. Set birth age range wide. If you have
duplicate entries over hours and years of work, you should find them.
Then you can merge the records and connect them as required with the
merged info.

Currently, if you have notes to merge from two different records, you
must copy the notes for each person to notepad or some other program, do
your editing, finish the merge, then modify the notes using the saved
Notepad file. If you try to append notes from one record to another
during the merge, they will be lost.

folder before starting steps 1-4 above - see step 3 below.

*Questions about OneDrive:*
1. Do I have OneDrive on my system?
     A. Yes, If you have Windows 8.1 or 10, it was automatically
installed

     B. Yes, if you have Office 360 installed
2. How can I see if OneDrive is installed?
     A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon
at bottom in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side
window a folder called OneDrive and maybe a few subfolders if you have
created any.

3. How do I create a new subfolder under OneDrive called:
\OneDrive\Legacy Backups\ ?
     A. You can use the Windows File manager (the yellow folder icon
at bottom in task bar) - Click on it, you should see in the left side
window a folder called OneDrive

     B. Right Click on OneDrive >New >Folder
     C. Type the new folder name as: Legacy Backup
     D. Hit return. You should see the new folder under OneDrive in
your screen on left side.

4. What if I don't have a OneDrive Subfolder or OneDrive is not
installed?
     A. You will need to download OneDrive from Microsoft and create
an account.

     B. Here is the link to do that:

Re: [LegacyUG] Procedure for installing and using OneDrive to backup my Legacy media files?

2017-09-30 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls
Legacy's backup procedure saves two separate "zip"=compressed files,
data and media. When doing a "restore", both files are needed.

The zipped data file can be saved to the Legacy cloud and to the same
hard drive as the program is on, or to an external drive.

The zipped media file can NOT be saved to the Legacy cloud. It can be
saved to the same hard drive as the program is on, or to an external drive.

I want to be able to save the backup zip file of Legacy Media files at
OneDrive. To use if my computer dies, etc. Then would install Legacy to
the new computer, copy the media zip file from OneDrive to the new
computer, unzip it, and add the media files to the Legacy media folder.
I can get the "data" files from the Legacy cloud backup.

I already save a copy of photo files to Google Drive for free. Not the
highest resolution, but should be OK if needed. I also backup the Legacy
zip files of data and media to two external hard drives. But, if all the
files in our house are lost in a fire or tornado, the data base could be
re-created from the cloud files.

Gedcom files can also be made to save our data, but will not save media.
Any Legacy update could destroy our existing Legacy data...

I only use my Legacy data on my home computer. Do not want to access it
any other way!

Hope this is correct and makes sense to everyone.

I just need help with the OneDrive install and setup as previously
indicated. My old brain can not seem to follow the instructions I have
found so far!

As I recall, the major complication is that you cannot copy a folder

Jill,

Do a system virus check and clean first to see if that helps.

Have you done all the updates to version 8?

You can uninstall Legacy 8 and re-install it if version 8 is available
on the web site. You will not lose data. But, do a full backup of data
media to an external hard drive or thumb drive first!

Legacy 9 still has problems, so I do not recommend changing to version 9
until you need it for some reason.

[LegacyUG] Problems with Manual Merge and file maintenance in Legacy 9

2017-08-24 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls

Alan,

Had a similar problem again tonight. Using the split screen view, did a
drag and drop of the data in a Legacy file into my "master" file. Had
about 15 children that were flagged as a problem. Check/Repair reported
it fixed the problem.

Also having a problem with file maintenance. Can not do the file,
compact family file without extensive experimenting. Keeps saying that
it can not run because another copy of the file is open or something
like that. Nothing shows when I check for a Legacy file still running
after closing Legacy. Using Ctrl-alt-Del, no Legacy applications or
process file open, but still get the same message when I try opening
Legacy and try the file, compact family file again. Doing other
operations like combining duplicate locations and other things finally
allows file, compact family file to work. Happened numerous times today
and previous days.

The problem happens when I drag an individual (who has a wife and

Please check this file very carefully.

It's a good idea to run another Check/Repair after you verify the

[LegacyUG] Recording DNA Test Data In Lagacy

2017-07-06 Thread J.M. "Jay" Ingalls

Jane,

Still using version 8. I add to name suffix box, "DNA Chr 1 match to
Jay", etc. Can search for and create list of people with "DNA data, Chr
1, Match to Jay" matches in my data. Works, but would like to be able to
include a lot more of the DNA match data.

Also is visible in reports and books sent to cousins and other researchers.

Anyone have a really good way of doing this in Version 9?

Must be able to easily search all the DNA data in Legacy!

I can not handle using extensive DNA spreadsheet data and updating.
Expect Legacy to do that for me.

I wish to indicate DNA confirmation for those ancestors that I have

I am looking for a simple way to indicate which ancestors I have DNA

Try using the "Revo" program to delete Legacy after you have done a new

Still using Windows 7 pro and Legacy 8. Normally everything works great.
Have had Legacy "act up" after waking up my computer, etc. Closing
Legacy and re-starting it usually solves any problems. If not,
re-starting the computer does. I have made some firmware updates in the
past on my now old ASUS Notebook. Have Windows set to update
automatically. Does it at shutdown and then completes it at the next
startup. Once in a while that causes the loss of most of my "home" icons
and shortcuts. Re-start usually fixes that. If not, start with F-8 and
use the repair option. From my memory, hope this is understandable.

The only problem I ever had with 'Windows 10' since the release of

There can be problems with images not showing on web
   pages if
upper case is used in the file names for the images.
   As a
general rule it is recommended to use only lower
   case file names
to be loaded onto websites. However this is not
   necessarily a
problem - in your case the files not showing up on

implies that (unless you are using Unix) it may not
   be the
cause. Probably worth checking though. Also
   as a general
   rule it is recommended

Have you refreshed your view of the web page to see

You can uninstall and then re-install from the web site without losing

Re: [LegacyUG] Descendant Narrative book report. Chronology report

2014-09-26 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
I had a problem with one version of Legacy where duplicate sources were
created by the program by adding hidden format data to existing source
info that was visible on the preview screen. Could see it in the
preview, but if I opened the source notes, they were not visible. Once I
opened the source notes and closed the source in a later version of
Legacy, the hidden format data was removed, and then I had two identical
sources which could be merged. Strange things can happen when
programmers make mistakes!

Re: [LegacyUG] How to Note my Birth Status

2014-08-13 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
If he acted as your father and raised you, I would be very tempted to
list you as adopted but then add a note that although he raised you, he
never did the paper work to make it a legal adoption. A lot of people
were raised that way before there was a legal adoption process. And a
lot of people are assuming they are tracing their ancestors and they are
not for that reason.

Also, add the data you collected for his ancestry to FamilySearch.org
and Ancestry.com and Rootsweb. No sense wasting all that effort, and it
will help someone else in the future.

Have you done the FamilyFinder test at FamilyTreeDNA.com? You might be
surprised.

[LegacyUG] How can I show which individuals I think are correct

2014-08-12 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
My legal birth certificate given name is J.M., Two capital letters, Two
periods, no spaces. For years, most software prevented entering that.
Worst was my application to the University of Michigan, instructions
said to use (only) after each initial on the application form for a name
with initials only, so I was listed as Jonly Monly. Also started most
grade and high school classes with an arguement with my teachers! What
is your real name? Not the best way to start a new relationship. Many
more stories!

I usually use the Birth Certificate name as the primary name for most
people in my data, then enter the alternate names, which allows me to
find them in my data with those names also.

We have a grandson that his legal name is JJ Allen Surname, he is always

My grandson has quite a few given names - one is only a letter.
His father called him 'Buddy' when he was small. Just a pet name - not
related to his given names - but it stuck.
I first and still call him by a diminutive of the name he's known by. I
didn't and don't like that name. No secret to the family!
But I have added info on these all to my programme info. For the one, I am
the source. I should go back and check old Facebook posts to add to that. Of
course, these references tell you something about his dad and about me too.
And someday, someone may wonder why these names appear for him so
consistently.

Alan, does Check / Repair process your files okay on other computers?
Does C/R just hang, or do you get an error, or do you mean it takes longer

Could any of you who have a very large database, like over 100,000 records,
tell me if check/repair works well for you. I've seen it (on a file of
169,000 records) finish in three minutes on one system, but on my system,
and a number of others I've tried, it either fails with an error, or hangs
for five to fifteen minutes on various steps along the way, often hanging
right away in the middle of rebuilding indexes.

I have Windows 7 installed, and I've tried changing many settings and
Services, and eliminating programs that might be interfering, but to no
avail. Anyway, it hangs or fails the same way on many of the new computers
at our local Family History Library. Any PC that has Windows XP will run
Check/Repair without any problem, no matter how big the file is. I should
say that I've not seen any such problem on smaller files ( I suppose under
10,000 records).. I have many small files which are the ones I usually
work on, and have no difficulties with them.

Any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated. :-)

Sherry,

If you could get your mail software changed so people can select Reply
All and have the To include the individual's e- mail address it might
help reduce off topic discussions. I use the Thunderbird program and

address into the To field to reply to people off list.

People would still need to delete the list address from the To field.

Re: [LegacyUG] Question re: Syncing people in two family files

2014-06-17 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Dan,

Repeating previous user comments. Put everything you want to save in one
file. Two files lead to a lot more work and confusion. I know, I tried it.

Legacy has many options for selecting just the ancestors or descendants
of a specific person. One of the most useful options is creating a
book of all the DEAD descendants of an ancestor, which can be shared
without a risk of identity theft it gets in the hands of the wrong person.

Do be sure you use the [[ ]] to make info private in notes, sources,
and events that should not be shared with the world.

And backup to an external hard drive and/or the cloud every time you
close the program or make changes or additions-at least daily.

You can put e-mail and other correspondence in the general notes or
sources or other locations so that years later you will still have the
info available, even if you lose your e-mail files.

the person lived over 1000 years! Other errors obvious. Worthwhile report.

Re: [LegacyUG] Disproved ancestors

Ron,

Have not done an actual count, but have about 100 with notes in the
given name field, out of about 65,000 people. And very few will be the
ancestors of my descendants. I collect data on all Ingalls of all
spellings in the USA and Canada, warn people when I send them data that
they need to verify everything. I will not live long enough to do the
work for everyone.

The suggestion to put the notes in the given name field in the double
brackets so they will not be published is good and bad. It may look
better, but does not warn the reader that I suspect there is a problem
with the data. I believe function or usability is much more
important than beauty.

2014-05-15 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Michele,

I just discovered the new update to Legacy, did that, and then tested
the problem again. On my data base and the sample data base.

Note that I almost always work from the pedigree view, then click on the
person to open, and then on Notes to add or edit them.

Typing in Test and clicking the x or Cancel does not give a
warning message and does not save the new data.

I did get a strange, not the usual warning, with one unintentional test
in the previous version. Apparently the problem is not fixed. I think
that I got numerous messages from Brian saying it was fixed about 10
days ago, but I am quite sure I have deleted his messages. Please pass
this on to Brian.

[LegacyUG] File Importing and Merging Problems and Needed Fixes and Options

2014-04-17 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Hoping that the Legacy programmers fix the file importing and merging
problems. I lost a lot of info on an import from another copy of my
Legacy data a while ago. Appeared to lose Ancestry numbers, etc.
Following your recommendations might have helped, but it should not be
necessary. I detest the large numbers used by FS, and have tried to
eliminate them when doing merges!

On a related topic, I still say, as I said years ago, the Source data
should be one of the clickable tabs when doing merges! We should be able
to see the sources and select the ones we want to save or combine when
merging

Yea! I'm glad to see that at least one other person has discovered that
if you are doing a lot of work on your database, the practice that Jay
[not Jay Ingalls] describes will help make your life a happier one than
you might otherwise have been able to enjoy. My largest file is 167,000
records, and the most difficult of operations was to merge a small
section back into it after it had been expanded, optimized, and sync'd
with FS FT.

I supposed that an AutoMerge using IntelliShare ID numbers would be all
that was needed. Not so. There are new issues now, having to do with
FSID's being lost in the process, for one thing.

I learned from others on this list to have the small file come in with
very large RIN numbers. I switch them right away to the left side of the
merge window, and proceed one by one. A confusion factor would appear if
I had allowed abandoned RINs to be reused (Customize 4.4) -- it seemed
to cause serious problems in the merge process, but this was only a
suspicion of mine, and not proved by testing, etc.

Before doing such a merge, I learned to first renumber RINs and MRINs,
and a few other preparatory steps I worked out, like backing up first
(duh...), and to run the first three file maintenance options on both
files, and to make no other changes before starting the merge. My merge
operations are coming out clean now, and without difficulty or problems
of any kind. I too am thankful for Legacy's overall strength at
managing the data.

Afterthought -- Okay, here are the steps I worked out:

*Before Merge -- of the Master File and the small file to be merged

* Backup both files Search and Replace -- Location Names Short Loc.
Names (, United States), both files Combine duplicate location names
Renumber RINs MRINs on both files File Maintenance - First three
options on both files Refresh and print tree list for Master File

*Merge Operation* All records - pertains to the imported file

*Renumber RINs from 21

* - pertains to the imported file.

(*Do not renumber from 1*, as this is already being used by the Master File

*Do not* Fill all existing abandoned RINs/MRINs

AutoBackup option not necessary -- done in a previous step

At beginning, when location differences are shown: Keep / transfer GPS
data onto left side Keep / transfer best location names onto left side

*At first merge window, swap to have large RINs on left side –
necessary to keep FSIDs

* **(_*None of the imported sync data from FS FT is kept unless it is on
the left side*_)

RINs of imported [FS] file are large, this makes merge data easier to see

Watch out – the program will call out possible merge of children with
same name where one died young, but another was born later with the same
name

Watch out – names of spouses might be slightly different – might
need to make them the same

Do not use AutoMerge - IntelliiShare options

*After Merge -- Master file

* Backup – before any corrections etc.

File Maintenance, First three options

Renumber RINs MRINs

Set relationships

Refresh and print trees list, and compare with the one made before the
merge

Do global sort of child and marriage lists

New backup *After Merge – Small File

* Rename the small file to move it to the Archive folder.

NOTE: Now is a good time to export a small file if one is ready, because
the MF is clean.

Re: [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

2014-04-06 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Kathy,

Did you happen to stop the merge process, then start it again? That can
cause some problems.

Also, there could be a glitch in the Legacy software, so you need to
report it to Support. I had some sources duplicated by Legacy inserting
normally hidden formatting code into text in notes and other places. It
appeared to happen with only one revision of Legacy 7.5. A soon as the
source notes are opened, the rogue formatting code disappears, so it is
only visible in the preview. It was a lot of work to open all the
duplicate sources, which removed the visible formatting code, and then
use the new option to merge duplicate sources.

*Subject:* [LegacyUG] duplicate marriages

I posted this before and didn't get any responses, so I'll try again :-)

Somehow during a merge (Intellimerge) I ended up with every single
marriage related to the merged file duplicated. Male #1 is married to
Female #2 twice; the 2nd marriage is separate and does not link to the
children of the 1st marriage, which I am grateful for. So as I've
tried to figure this out on my own, I have found the quickest way to
remove these marriages is to go to the marriage list and go down the
list one by one, visually noting the duplicates, highlighting the
bogus marriage (it has a much higher RIN) and then making the 3 or 4
clicks to unlink each marriage. This has been very time consuming but
at least it's better than trying to browse through the file or having
to be in family view to remove each link.

I would like to be able to see a list of these duplicate marriages
that may still exist so I can see where I am on it and what needs to
be done and ones I've overlooked.

Is there a way to create such a list? I browsed through the search
criteria for marriages but it didn't seem to fit. I haven't done a
lot of searches though and definitely nothing this specific.

Thanks to anyone who can help! If it can't be done, I hope a legacy
moderator will at least just tell me that I simply have to continue
going one by one through the marriage list. At least then I'd know :-)

I did try to follow your description of what you were doing but with
some errors in your terminology I was not able to confirm this as a
problem. I used the sample file that comes with Legacy so you can follow
along with my steps

Use Sample File
Select Asa Clark Brown
Open him for edit which opens the individual edit form (page as you call it)
select his birth in Woodstock
Use the down arrow to open the Master Location List (not the Geo database)
The GEO db opens with Woodstock selected since this location is in the
Geo Database
*** There is no way to combine locations in the Geo Db though so this is
where I lost you ***
I selected Woodstock from the Geo Db to return to the Master Location
List (this is where you can combine locations)
I clicked the Combine button
I then selected Tionesta, PA and clicked the Combine With
(This combined Woodstock into Tionesta so Woodstock no longer existed in
the Master Location List)
To follow your step of combining other locations I then selected West
St. Paul MN
Clicked Combine a second time
Selected Winnebago Prairie MN
Clicked Combine With to remove West St. Paul
Winnebago Prairie is highlighted
I then clicked close (If you click Select at this point you are
selecting the currently highlighted location so that will be the
location returned to the Individual Information form)
The Birth Location for Asa is now Tionesta PA (the location into which
Woodstock was combined) and not the location highlighted on the Master
Location List (Winnebago Prairie).

Re: [LegacyUG] where to store images

2014-04-03 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Kathy,

With Legacy8, it is easier to copy your images to the Legacy folder
for Media, and then when you backup your Legacy data you will also
backup the images linked to records in Legacy. I would not put images in
the Legacy folder that are not linked to a record in Legacy.

If you send a backup (.zip files) copy of your data to a friend or
relative, send the zipped Legacy and Legacy Media files, and they can
restore the data and have an exact copy of your data and media. You will
not need to send copies of images separately.

Everyone, have you watched where Legacy is copying images from when
doing a Legacy backup?

Is there anything wrong with that? Is there a benefit to 'copying'

[LegacyUG] Location changed by merging records and closing location edit list

2014-04-01 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Too tired to explain this step by step, but working from Individual edit
page, looking up a location in GEO database, then seeing others on the
location list that need to be merged, doing some of that, then NOT
selecting the location last merged but it is highlighted, closing the
edit list, changes the location to the last location edited.

It should keep the original location as edited, Does NOT! That can ruin
our records if not caught.

I think I have seen this happen in the past with 7.5 and earlier versions.

I must go through the steps outlined in my original post each time I want to

When I load the report the settings are not correct.
Here are the settings I am trying to use:

Format Tab - uncheck Put boxes around Individuals
Pictures Tab - Check Pictures of Individuals
click Close

Color text and boxes
click Set four line colors and then save

When I preview the report it is as I would like to see it. Now I save

I have to repeat the above steps each time I use this report even if I

Your post is a bit confusing because you talk of Saving and Loading the

but you refer to 'Save; in the lower right corner of the window.

The Save and Load buttons in the lower right corner are for saving and
loading
a set of Options, not for saving the Report itself. If you create the

saved it every time you open it, just like any document file will. If you
want to

will be
applied to the new Report.

[LegacyUG] Finding place data such as Dissen within Legacy

2014-03-24 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Now that I understand the question?, I use the Legacy Search, Find,
Individual, Birth Place, Contains, Dissen search frequently, because I
have a lot of data with locations entered inconsistently.

This can be done for death, burial, marriage, notes and events, etc., also.

All will be included in the final list if the Add results to existing
List option is chosen.

Then all in the list can be tagged, using Options, Advanced Tagging,
Everyone in the Search List.

I have none for Dissen, but at least 188 for Germany in my file.

In that case, I would go to the Locations Master List (View Master Lists
Location...) and sort right-to-left (Sort Direction of Sort Right to
Left) so that all locations within one country were listed together, then all
within one county/state/whatever-it-is-for-each-country, and so on down the
line.

Now, all locations including Dissen in Germany should be grouped together,
whether that is a village, town or county/state/whatever - this works
regardless of what level your particular place is.

Make sure the Show People option is ticked in the Master Location List
window.

Scroll, search or otherwise move down the list of locations to get to where
Dissen makes an appearance. Select a location that is in Dissen and you
should see a list of who is using that location. If there is more than one
location in the list using Dissen, select each in turn and look at the list
of people using that location.

If you have your ancestral line bolded, your ancesters will be shown in bold
in the list so you can spot them easily amongst all the other people in your
database.

Hope this helps. :-)

Re: [LegacyUG] Reinstall legacy

Rich,

How and with what did you backup your hard drive? I only know that a lot
of backups are not complete enough to just copy to another hard drive
and have the system operate as it did.

Good chance you will need to install all your software, Windows, Legacy,
etc., from scratch, and update all of them, then restore your Legacy
data by using the Legacy program, or copying the Legacy data files into
the new installation.

Be sure you have anti-virus software running as soon as possible!

Re: [LegacyUG] Duplicate ID Numbers Software Problem?

2014-03-12 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Brian,

Thanks for working on my problem. Is there any file in Legacy that saves
anything about ID Numbers like the usr files?

Or any chance the search for ID Numbers is also checking the MRIN or RIN
numbers or something else? Or is the search stopping at the dash or
something and/or calling all with some particular character a duplicate?

I have scrolled through thousands of ID numbers and not found many
duplicate ID numbers except for the Burleigh numbers being the same for
everyone in Generation # 10, etc. That is only small portion of the
reported duplicates.

I did find some Ancestry numbers in the ID Number field and moved themG.

Name List, I only have 66,194 people in my database!

I do have duplicate ID numbers starting with B, because I imported
data long ago for Ingalls listed in Burleigh's 1903 book on the Ingalls.
The researcher who added the data to her genealogy program added ID
numbers starting with B for Burleigh to indicate the number came from
his book. The book was published in 1903, so many of the individuals she
added to her data are descendants of some one in his book. She handled
that by using the number for the last ancestor listed in Burleigh plus a
dash number indicating the number of generations an individual is
removed from B1. So, there can be many descendants with the same ID
number such as B1222-10.

I did a search for ID numbers starting with B and found 3,948 People
with ID Numbers starting with B. Not all of them are duplicates!

I did a fairly extensive audit of all my ID numbers and found very few
identical ID Numbers, except for the Burleigh numbers. Looks to me like
there is a software problem.

[LegacyUG] Duplicate ID Numbers Software Problem?

2014-03-11 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Thanks to the people who checked for duplicate ID numbers and did not
find a software problem.

I did go to the Sample data base.

Checked for duplicate ID numbers and none found.

Went to the customize option and used the option to clear all ID
numbers, none found.

Used the option to use the prefix JMI and the RIN number to set ID
numbers for all.

220 set.

Used the clear all, says cleared 160!

Set the ID numbers again, the same way, says 160 set.

Cleared again, 160 cleared.

Name list says contains 160 individuals

Ran the merge duplicate ID numbers again, none found.

The 220 set, 160 cleared, 160 set, 160 cleared indicates there is a
software problem.

Would appreciate it if some of you would try this on the Sample data
base. I am beginning to suspect that I may have a bad Legacy usr file
or something.

I Tried this on an old Legacy 7.5 file and had similar results as for
the Legacy 8 Sample file.

62,168 Individuals in file
50,837 duplicate ID numbers
61,503 cleared (all)
84,620 set (all)
62,168 cleared
Last 2 steps repeated

[LegacyUG] Formatting Ancestry.com Census Data for Legacy Events

2014-03-07 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Thanks to all for your suggestions and questions on using census data in
Legacy. I had not experimented with Firefox or Chrome to see how they
handle the copy and paste into Legacy, and the comments on that may be
very helpful.

One comment that I need to make is that I normally put my census data in
events, not in notes or sources. Our original source entries in the
first genealogy programs available went in the Notes section, the only
place available for them. Many are still there.

When the ability to put sources in the Source section became available
in newer programs, I put most of the new entries there. I use the option
to print sources at the end of books, which means people must look
there to find sources. I find that awkward.

Once Legacy added the option to put in events that print with the
individuals data, and then added the ability to copy the event to the
clipboard, I started putting census and other events there.

Bill Boswell asked: Do you create the top part for each household
member or just the head of household?

I edit the census data for the first person I work on in the family, and
then copy it to the clipboard and paste it into the next family or
household members event. For each person, I usually edit the data
applicable to them, which is at least the first line, so it is readable
while looking at the list of events for that person. This way, I can
tell their age in each census, where they lived, and the state where
they were born without opening any event.

Sometimes the list of events shows the women losing years as they age,
sometimes it indicates the person giving the info did not really know
when or where their fellow household member was born, and even what
their name was G.

Normally the portion of the census data for each person, beginning with
the list of people in the household and the source info, will not change
after creating the record for the first person I work on in the household.

Some Ancestry census records copy and paste differently with IE
depending on the census year and even where I start and stop the
highlighting before pressing Control-C. Whenever it gets too messy,
I paste into Notepad, and then copy and paste that into the Legacy Event.

A few times, on some web pages, I have copied a web page and pasted it
into my trial version of Word or Open Office, saved it as a plain text
(.txt) file, and then opened the plain text file and copied and pasted
that into Legacy. That can save the basic format and avoid a lot of
editing time with some web pages.

If anyone wants to see a jpg copy of how my lists of events look, write
to me at jay_inga...@pipeline.com and I can send you a screen save jpg
of what I see when looking at the Individuals Information screen in
Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Duplicate ID Numbers Software Problem?

2014-03-07 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
If you use the ID Number field in Legacy, have you tried a search for
duplicate ID numbers?

Go to; My Toolbar, Merge, Find Duplicates, Special Duplicates Search,
Find duplicates using only User ID number, Continue.

I ran the search for duplicate ID numbers and found 57, 416 duplicate ID
numbers per the Legacy version 8 software. I have ran it in the past
with previous versions of Legacy and did not find many. When I go to the
Name List, I only have 66,194 people in my database!

[LegacyUG] Legacy Update Notice and Legacy Home tab.

2014-03-05 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Sherry,

I never can think of the proper terminology for Buttons and Tabs,
etc. I was referring to what you call the Legacy Home tab. Have almost
no use for what you call the Preferred Startup Family.

I almost never see Legacy Home tab where it is now. Most programs
appear to have a link to their web site in their Help menu. Any
additional location would help. Or the pop-up notice that an update is
available when starting the program that then fades away as previously
mentioned would be a great addition.

Note that I have not received a message from Legacy that a new version
is available.

we'd give instructions so Ken changed that button to the Startup

It wouldn't go on the File ribbon since it has nothing to do with

[LegacyUG] Fixed Fonts, Destroyed Columns?

2014-03-04 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Mike,

Thanks for: Consolas is a nice, clean, mono-spaced font.

I think Courier is also a fixed font. It would be nice if Legacy
identified all the fixed fonts. And I would prefer Legacy using only
fixed fontsG.

When I copy and paste census info from Ancestry.com, Legacy includes a
lot of hidden format info. That makes a mess after the data is pasted in
and saved and then re-opened. It would be nice if Legacy worked like
Notepad and removed all or most of the formatting when pasting the info
into Legacy.

Not L8 only L7 and earlier can be downloaded from their download site.

I have the download of 397 but it’s far too big to e-mail at 63.7Mb
would you like me to upload it using Send this file?

I think what I may do in future is to download the standard version

Including the “F” key to go to Search.

Also missing are the ages of the couple after entering the marriage

the “Marr Date” box or “in” box. It will also show after putting in
the marriage date and exiting/re-entering the Marriage/Relationship

If you use the same settings each time for your merges, and mark the
non-matches as such using the icon in the bottom right corner, they will
not come up again as possible matches. Be sure you look at the spouses
and children, dates and places, to help decide if you have a match, also
the notes, events, etc.

Never merge unless quite sure they are the same person!!!

Sometimes I add a note saying who I merged, why, and when, and by whom=me.

I use the option to add conflicting info to events quite often.

Subject: [LegacyUG] Single Surname Study II

Mary, Ron,
Thanks for the quick reply. I'm new to this software and don't fully
understand the best way to do things yet.

In Legacy Deluxe 8.0, I tag unrelated individuals and then create a search
for that tag in the Name List. I'm currently experimenting with adding
fields to the 2nd and 3rd lines of List Report Options to get a format I
like. I think this will give me enough information - Names, birth, death,
etc. - to be able to screen for new individuals or relationships while away
from my computer in a library.

Since Legacy is a computer (as opposed to server based, I haven't tried
DropBox yet) based program, I'd like to have printed material to refer to on
trips to libraries to aid in research.

I will look at the Event reports also.

Is there a way to print multiple Individual Reports at once, using tags?

Thanks,

Ted

Hello,

I'm using Legacy Deluxe 8.0.

Is there a best practice to organize dozens to hundreds of unrelated
individuals as part of a single surname study?
I'm guessing advanced tagging?
Can I get decent reports?

2014-02-25 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
In 7.5, I frequently had to use the reset button for reports to get them
to work correctly. They seemed to be messed up by updates or something.
So always try that when a report format goes crazy. Then you need to
re-do all your preferred report format changes.

Try as I might, I cannot 'make' the problem happen. It occurs randomly,
after several completely normal charts, some with exactly the same
people. When I close Legacy and restart, and produce a chart with the
same people the problem has disappeared (until next time!)
It seems not to relate to any particular person. I've changed many of
the chart settings and cannot make the problem recur. There are no
particularly exotic programs on this computer, but I will watch out for
the problem on my netbook which has even fewer programs. Next time it
happens I will try a few more things before resorting to shutting the
program down.

Re: [LegacyUG] Entering Unknown People

2014-02-24 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
One thing I did not see mentioned is that in the Name list of people
in your data, you can select the option to use the husband's surname as
a second entry for the wife. Then you can find the wife with her
married name. I keep that option set most of the time. I remember many
people by their given name but not by their surname or married name, so
I use the given name fairly often to find people in my data. Having the
married name for wives is a big help.

I do not see any need to have Jane Doe as an AKA.

Best to leave all unknown fields blank. For dates, a good guess based on
birth years of parents or children or spouse or marriage date will help
when doing merges.

Unknown wastes ink when printing and looks terrible to me.

Also use the option for adding alternate names, add the full given and
nickname. Then you can find him by either name in the name list index.

I would enter his name as, for an example Antonio Tony. This clearly shows
his given name and the name he was commonly known by. The name in quotes

Re: [LegacyUG] Just getting back to Legacy

2014-02-21 Thread J.M. Jay Ingalls
Before you install version 8, make a backup file of your database on
another hard drive or on a CD, just in case something goes wrong!

I did not follow the steps in the install procedure, but have it
workingG. Version 8 installs in a different area if you follow the
standard install steps. Quite easy. Version 7 will still run, but do not
use it!

Just install version 8 then go through the normal operations. The menus
are much different, and I dislike many of those changes, but can adapt.

At your direction, it can search for and find existing Legacy files on
your computer and convert them to version 8, and will also find gedcom
files. Be sure you select your latest files if you have more than one. I
have many databases and that has caused me some problems in the past.

The new options for media re-linking and copying the media files to one
location in the Legacy folder is a good idea, but not working correctly
for me yet.

If not, how do I get my ver 7 data into ver 8.
Will the ver 7 ver 8 installations interfere with each other?
Version 8 will install quite separately to 7, so you can keep both if
you want to. STRONGLY recommend that you allow Legacy 8 to install to
its default location. It will put your data, media etc into a folder
within My Documents.

Once you've installed, tell it to open an existing file and navigate to
your current family file. Legacy 8 will offer to copy (copy, not move)
this to the new location and then convert it. This is also the
recommended method.

You cannot open the Legacy 8 family file in Legacy 7, but you will have
your old version of the program and the file if you want to keep them.

All my Source documents are in folders (or folders within folders) according
