The funny thing is that if the group is changed, and you are not an explicit member, you can turn on filter logging as an admin, but the filters don't show up in the log. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Opela, Gary L CTR USAF AFMC 72 CS/SCBAH Sent: Friday, October 24, 2008 6:32 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: RANT: Support Finally Got under my skin I am almost scared to ask this question, Chris, but have you checked in the admin tool under File - Server Information, Log Files - Client Side Logging Group to see which group is set there? Wouldn't hurt. Typically the Server Side Group dropdown sorts things via Group ID instead of Name...and Admin is group 1, so it's always first on the list...if it's not the first one on the list selected I can see having problemsand if you search on the Group form, sort by Group ID and identify any groups with the same ID with different names, that may also cause you issues. _ From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Danaceau, Chris Sent: Friday, October 24, 2008 7:27 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: RANT: Support Finally Got under my skin ** Worth a look, I guess. We did this and ran into a memory problem. When in this mode and it needs to recache (such as a group change), it asks for a second copy in memory, does the update, starts running all new actions in the new workspace. Meanwhile the old workspace is kept until all actions are done. Then the old memory is freed. Sounds great, right? Although the AR System freed the memory, Solaris did not. We found ourselves running out of RAM and had to switch modes. We do all major changes to production after hours. These include group changes (but not group membership), form changes, and a bunch of other things. It takes six minutes to recache when our system is idle. If its set to 0, or if its not present in your ar.cfg at all, then you're in production mode and your root cause is still a mystery. During this time, the CPU of our first server jumped to 90% and sustained that for at least 3-4 minutes. During this time no user could operate in Remedy at all. All other operations came to a screeching halt while this was being done. Is this the norm for a group-cache update? The newest release of an Admin tool appears to be ARS 7.1.00 patch 004. Since I'm upgrading from ARS 7.1.00 patch 002 do I: a) not worry about patch levels, as long as the versions match b) upgrade the server to patch 5 and upgrade Admin tool to patch 4 (ie. they don't match, but it's the newest available). -ivan- -- Ivan Runions Information Technologies University of Calgary Calgary Alberta Canada (403) 220-4437 ___ _ ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: www.rmsportal.com ARSlist: Where the Answers Are ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: www.rmsportal.com ARSlist: Where the Answers Are -- Ivan Runions Information Technologies University of Calgary Calgary Alberta Canada (403) 220-4437 ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: www.rmsportal.com ARSlist: Where the Answers Are ___ UNSUBSCRIBE or access ARSlist Archives at www.arslist.org Platinum Sponsor: www.rmsportal.com ARSlist: Where the Answers Are

Re: Picking a file up
Lesse...brainstorming Create a regular form for holding the records that are successful Create an escalation on User that files on qual 1=2, and add an else action push to the form you just created that creates a record On the from you created, create a series of filters that fire on submit. One of them will be a runprocess of PERFORM-ACTION-ADD-ATTACHMENT field_ID [ file_name ] where field ID is the attachment field on the form you want it to be put on, and filename is the csv file you want to attach I assume you don't want to attach the same file multiple times...so you would then probably have another filter/action that goes in and removes the file from the filesystem Then you could have another filter check to see if the attachment field contains the file you were looking for, and if it doesn't have it delete the record, this would make it so that only records that actually grabbed the csv would still exist at the end of the process You then need a filter that will put that attachment where you actually want it of course. _ From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Warren Baltimore Sent: Friday, November 07, 2008 11:56 AM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Picking a file up ** ARS 6.3 ITSM 5.5 Solaris 9i Oracle I'm sure there is a way to do this, but for the life of me, I can't remember how! Re: API User Access - Can it be limited?
Susan, I'm not familiar with the requirement that you are talking about that requires the user to be an Admin. From my understanding, any API tool can use any user that's valid in the system for the function they are trying to do, and due to the fact that the user tool is nothing more than a vendor provided api client...I'm wondering where you got that information. If my understanding is correct you could have the user account in question be a read only user account that had permissions only to pull the information it needs, and create records in the staging table. _ From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Susan Palmer Sent: Thursday, November 13, 2008 8:22 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: API User Access - Can it be limited? ** Hi Everyone, This will be our first plunge into the world of Remedy API creation. We have a portal page through a java application that we're going to let our external customers submit Help Tickets on. We'll be using the API to take the info on that portal page and submit to a staging form in Remedy. From there it's all covered with regular filters to create the HT and retrieve all other required field information to complete the record properly. The API will also be retrieving information from various forms for menu type fields and to show open HTs. My question is: I know I have to create a Remedy User account and from what I've researched I have to give the account admin rights. That makes me very nervous. That means I'll be giving an outside group power within Remedy and they have a history of over utilizing rights. Is there a way for me to limit their 'write' permissions to just that staging form? I haven't used subadmin permissions either. I lead a sheltered life as a one-person shop, all powerful Remedy Queen. Could I create a separate permission group with only that API User in it and give that group change rights on all the fields on the form. Then give the form subadmin rights for that group also. Would that satisfy the API's requirements? The API will be getting information from several forms, does it require more than Read rights to obtain the info. The API will only be submitting to the one staging form. I appreciate your help. Only about 20% of the disk is used. I have concluded that the issue is the diary searches. I suspected that this was a problem about a month ago, so I created a form and a filter that would capture a record every time a user did a diary search. Sure enough, I discovered users were doing diary searches dozens of times per day. There are now over 500,000 tickets in this system, and each ticket contains diary entries of up to 30 pages (or more) in length. Users were repeatedly searching for things like, The ticket was placed on hold because the customer is unavailable. So I have locked down the diary field to prevent these searches, but I'm already hearing all sorts of dissent: That puts us out of business! We HAVE to be able to search the worklog! In typical hamfisted fashion, BMC has shoved out a modification that impacts every regular form - that is, the core character fields have increased from 30 to 254. This means, of course, that if you left the Expand Box option to Default in the field properties, every one of the fields (Submitter, Last Modified By, and Assigned To) has an Expand Box showing. In most cases, this has caused the GUI on our forms to look ridiculous. Does anyone know of a quick way to change the Expand Box option to Hide? I was hoping for a cool SQL statement like UPDATE field_dispprop SET something to something WHERE fieldid=4 The above would update all Assigned To fields. Of course, the option for the expand box is in the proplong or propshort columns so it looks like crap and is essentially unmodifiable. Anyone know of an API call for this? They put 0 for a value in a field that was expecting one or more email addresses. After some hunting I was able to figure out that Remedy took this to mean the Public group and sent an email to every user registered with our Remedy server. This turned out to be 1000's of emails. It looks like Remedy translates the Public group and then creates an outgoing email for each email address in the User form. I thought I could easily block this from happening by making sure the value in this field contained something that looked like an email address (contained a @) but users could do something like [EMAIL PROTECTED], 0, [EMAIL PROTECTED]. Also, there are many fields throughout the application that allow a free-typed value (not a good idea but it is what I am stuck with) so I would have to build a lot of work flow. I was wondering if there was something that could be done to stop Remedy from translating values to Groups or a way of catching this happening during email processing? Re: UPDATE: Intermittent, Spotty ARS Performance (UNCLASSIFIED)
I completely agree that we are talking about a like statement on a wide table that won't use an index with over 500K records in it...this is a 'bad' thing to say the leastbut according to my DBA, you can instruct SQL to not block other query/update/insert to the table while the inefficient query is being run...while this isn't ideal...it makes it so that it's not blocking. It's dirty, not because it's inefficient, but because it's possible for the data to change before it's all given to you...and I agree that this is likely to happen on any DBany db that allows searching on the diary fields. One 'solution' that you could look into that others recommended earlier in the thread is to use the Full Text Search capability reintroduced in the 7.x worldit is a separate indexing service that indexes specific fields that you want to search on (diary fields especially) and allows for efficient searching of those records without hurting the DB. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Kaiser, Norm E CIV USAF AFMC 96 CS/SCCE Sent: Wednesday, December 03, 2008 4:54 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: UPDATE: Intermittent, Spotty ARS Performance (UNCLASSIFIED) Well, that's called SQL injection, but that doesn't apply here, as Remedy guards against it through parameterized statements. The issue is most definitely related to diary searches, but I would *expect* that a diary search would not so drastically impact ALL users as it does. I can understand the person who invoked the diary search having a problem, but considering there are so many other threads available and CPU utilization remains under 10%, I would think other users would not be impacted so dramatically. But it never fails...I can reproduce the problem 100% of the time. I kick off a diary search, and everyone's client stops responding. It's almost like (I know this is dreaded and sometimes over-reported), but it's almost like a memory leak in the server app. Restarting the service, naturally, rectifies the situation and Remedy just hums along until someone else does a diary search. Good article. I wasn't aware of the Select-Query-Hint: NOLOCK option for the ar.cfg. While I certainly don't doubt the power of Oracle, if Oracle doesn't lock the table or row during a query, you run the risk of uncommitted or stale being returned by the query...which is exactly the drawback of NOLOCK. So as I see it, switching to Oracle would not overcome that risk. So I'm considering trying the NOLOCK option, but the dangers of stale/dirty data being returned really worry me. This parameter works only on queries triggered by GLE, GLEWF, and GME API calls. If this configuration item is an empty string or is not present, no WITH clause is generated. Consult your SQL Server to determine the appropriateness of using this feature in your environment. The Select-Query-Hint option is commonly used with a NOLOCK setting for allowing queries to execute without being blocked by simultaneous updates, thereby improving performance. For example, to allow SQL Server to read data in the process of being updated and avoid blocking, specify: Select-Query-Hint: NOLOCK Here is a useful site explaining NOLOCK http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6185492.html Using NOLOCK has some drawbacks. Verify Query and Field values
I'm working on a console that will allow for updates of data through an external program. I would like to verify that the Form, Query, Field, and Field value that they are choosing are valid before I call my external program. I found this runprocess that allows me to validate the Query Application-Parse-Qual form qualification_string This verifies that the Form and Qualification string are valid by converting them to an 'internal representation'...which I don't actually want...but it serves my purposes at the momentwhat I can't find is verification that the field they have specified to update, and the value they want to put in it are valid and won't violate any rules that Remedy has in place. For example if I have a selection field with values No/Yes, and they specify that field, I would like to throw an error if they specify that they want to set it to 'Heck Yes'or if they are wanting to set a Character field with 200 characters, but the field has a limit of 50, my program will error when trying to set it, guaranteed...but I want to catch it before I call my external program. Re: Verify Query and Field values
NevermindGot it...:)This is for anyone else who wants to do something similar Here is some basics just to help you out below...I have a form with 4 fields...Form, Query, Field, Value, these represent the form I want to update, the query I want to perform to do the update, the field I want to update, and the value I want to change that field to. Application-Parse-Qual $Form$ $Query$ This verifies that the form and qualification specified works...you can easily throw the results away... Application-Map-Names-To-Ids $Form$ $$Field$$ The second set of $ around $Field$ makes it look for that field...I don't want to have the $ around my field in my record...so I added it in the Filter...this gives me the Field ID of the field in question...which I use in the next statement Application-Parse-Val-SField $Form$ $Field ID$ $Form$ $Value$ This turns a set/push action into an internal representation...which I don't really care about...but if it errors out that means that if doing a setfield on 'current form' to the field I specified in the above filter to the value specified is invalid. So with these three filters, or I guess...3 actions in a single filter, I can verify that all 4 pieces of my record are valid optionswhich will hopefully ensure that my external program won't bomb because any one of them isn't 100% accurate. Oh...and in case anyone is wondering why I'm doing thisI need to be able to set a dynamic field, on a dynamic form with a dynamic value. I can't do this with advanced workflow because the field ID can't be dynamic...:)...just working around limitations of the appthis will allow me to specify via workflow what form I want the update to be performed on, with what qual, and set a dynamic field with a verified valid valuevery nice...because I was doing this through direct SQL previously...which I didn't like doing. -Original Message- From: LJ Longwing [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2008 5:06 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Verify Query and Field values I'm working on a console that will allow for updates of data through an external program. Okgranted...I have never tried a push to a dynamic form, static field...and then use a setfield with the Copy-Field-Value...I'd never considered doing it in that particular combination. Sounds a bit like a backhanded way of doing itbut you're right...would likely work...if you did a push of two fields into tmp fields...the value you want to set, and the field you want to set it intoand then have a filter on destination that takes the value and copies it to that fieldyea that would work...:) Thank you Carey...puts another tool in my bag...:) -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Carey Matthew Black Sent: Thursday, December 04, 2008 9:27 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Verify Query and Field values LJ, Uh.. maybe you can... However that can be done to a dynamic form name. Engineers at a major aerospace company were instructed to test the effects of bird-strikes (notably geese) on the windshields of airliners and military jets. To simulate the effect of a goose colliding with an aircraft traveling at high speed, the test engineers built a powerful gun, with which they fired dead chickens at the windshields. The simulations using the gun and the dead chickens worked extremely effectively, happily proving the suitability of the windshields, and several articles about the project appeared in the testing industry press. It so happened that another test laboratory in a different part of the world was involved in assessing bird-strikes - in this case on the windshields and drivers' cabs of new very high speed trains. The train test engineers had read about the pioneering test developed by the aerospace team, and so they approached them to ask for specifications of the gun and the testing methods. The aerospace engineers duly gave them details, and the train engineers set about building their own simulation. The simulated bird-strike tests on the train windshields and cabs produced shocking results. The supposed state-of-the-art shatter-proof high speed train windshields offered little resistance to the high-speed chickens; in fact every single windshield that was submitted for testing was smashed to pieces, along with a number of train cabs and much of the test booth itself. The horrified train engineers were concerned that the new high speed trains required a safety technology that was beyond their experience, so they contacted the aerospace team for advice and suggestions, sending them an extensive report of the tests and failures. Gary, You can have him open the object list and hit this key sequence Alt-Space, then hit M, then hit left arrow. then start moving his mouse and the object list will be attached to the mouse. The forms are connected by 2 fields that have the same entry numbers. On Form B there is a button called Worklog. When you click on this button, it opens up the worklog of the record that you have open in Form A. I created a view of Form A that just has the Worklog field and the 2 related entry fields. I did an AL to open the window of that view in Modify and that works, the worklog will open from the record of Form A and you can add entries like normal. The problem is occuring after you save the worklog entry. For some reason, it is not pushing that entry immediately back to the normal Form A view. I have to go back to Form A and actually refresh the screen to have the new entry appear in the worklog. I did try an open window action and used a dialogue window, but that wouldn't save an entry with the timestamp and username. To make matters even worse, they don't want to use the save button on the worklog view form, they want me to create a button to save all the information. I was thinking that I would have to create a push fields action for that like I normally do for save buttons, but then I can't get the entry to save in the worklog like normal if I use a dialogue window. It will only save in that view without the timestamp and username and then will not send the entry back to the normal Form A view. ARERR [160] Decompression has failed
I upgraded to Mid-Tier 7.1 P5 (running against the same patch server) about a month ago, and on Friday I had a user report the following error ARERR [160] Decompression has failed when trying to open a PDF file. I wasn't able to replicate via the user tool, nor via web browser (IE), until I realized that she was on a different web server than I was (we have two of them load balanced in prod). As soon as I connected to the same web server she was using I began receiving the error. I rebooted Tomcat (web and applet server all in one) and the problem went away. Today they came back with the same error again, but this time both web servers are experiencing issues. I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this issue. It only seems to affect PDF files thus far because I'm able to open other files. Restart of the applet server seems to take care of it for a bit, but not forever obviously. I guess...:) -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Carey Matthew Black Sent: Tuesday, December 16, 2008 12:11 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Fw: Select distinct from api LJ, I kind of agree, but If you use the AR API(Server) to issue the SQL then you can write to one API instead of potentially multiple RDBMS API's. If you use the AR API(Server) to issue the SQL then you could even do it via a prepared AR System application instead of using a full AR administrator account too. (Which I think is required to use the Server.GetListSQL() API call.) If you use the AR API(Server) you can do other things that are harder to do via the RDBMS API too. ( Like trigger notifications, inform the support process of exceptions, etc..) However, when the AR System does not fully implement all of the features that the RDBMS has and you need those features, then you need to drop down to the lower level and use the tools that you need to use to get the job done. You just may not have to set up any additional libraries/utilities/infrastructure to tap into those RDBMS features for one or two things that you need to do. :) -- Carey Matthew Black Remedy Skilled Professional (RSP) ARS = Action Request System(Remedy) Love, then teach Solution = People + Process + Tools Fast, Accurate, Cheap Pick two. Members of dynamic groups are controlled by values in fields. Depending on which group you are discussing. So for example. If you are looking at the dynamic group 'Submitter', the member of that group, for any given record, is the user ID that exists in field 2 on a particular record in a particular form, the same thing goes for Assignee, field 4, and 'Assignee Group', field 112...later versions allow you to define your own Dynamic groups by matching field ID's to Group ID's within a specific group ID range. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of arsadm Sent: Wednesday, December 17, 2008 12:24 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: please help Thanks a lot for your quick response. If the first character is not alphanumeric, a leading A is added to the name. If the name of a field is blank, a field name with a leading A followed by the fieldId is used. The statement applies to the deferred (and now cancelled) UserWorld 2008, UserWorld in EMEA for 2009 and UserWorld at the end of 2009. We at BMC Software appreciate that the current economic situation has made it difficult for many of our customers, partners, and vendors to allocate the funds and staff time required for off-site employee training and continued education. With that in mind, we have decided not to host the BMC UserWorld conference for 2009. Guess that makes the ARSlist the UserWorld 2009, meeting from now to the end of the year, At least for the BMC BSM/Atrium/Remedy crowd. I will let others discuss if this is a good fiscal move or not. I think the value Of the conference outweighs the costs, but I only have to pay the bill for me. In any event, or lack thereof, this means I will be doing the following: 1) Returning to the Vote for the ARSlist Awards for 2008 2) Planning for some set of events that can allow us to properly Do the ARSlist Awards 2009 and provide a method for us all to Share our discoveries of 2009. This may mean a multi-city simultaneous conference, Or setting up a virtual conference. 3) Exploring other on-line avenues to expand what the ARSlist/WWRUG can provide To replace our annual conference networking ability. Create two new groups, that we can call these two names: Floating_2 and Floating_8 Set each group to have access to the right number of licenses. Then... For the people who should only get to use the Floating_2 license, make sure they are not also members of the Floating_8 group. For the people who should be able to use all 10 license, then make sure they are a member of both groups. Now if you want to try to make sure the the Floating_8 license are used first (by the people who are in both groups then I think you need to make sure that the 'Group ID' value for Floating_8 is (less than) the 'Group ID' value for Floating_2. in your email log dir you should have a stdout.log and stderr.log that get written every time you restart the service...so if your logs haven't been written to since the 16th, I would think that you may be looking at the wrong log set. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Hennigan, Sandra H CTR OSD-CIO Sent: Monday, January 12, 2009 12:27 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: Mid-Tier and Email Failure (U) UNCLASSIFIED Thanks. Re: How to restrict floating license for centain group
LOL...you are so thorough as to put me to shame...the only piece I was arguing was 'if no user from Group A is log on to Remedy'...as you pointed out..it's possible to write a custom area plugin...but bar thatI can't see a way to only allocate the remaining 2 licenses to group b 'ONLY' in the case of noone from group A being logged on. -Original Message- From: Action Request System discussion list(ARSList) [mailto:arsl...@arslist.org] On Behalf Of Carey Matthew Black Sent: Monday, January 12, 2009 12:46 PM To: arslist@ARSLIST.ORG Subject: Re: How to restrict floating license for centain group LJ, Actually what was said looked like this to me: (maybe I missed something) 1) I want to put some limit on Group A, which means at any given time, there will not be more than 2 users from 'Group A' can use the floating license to make changes, even there are 8 floating license are available to use. This is easily done with Floating license pools and the correct group memberships for the users. (AKA: Max = 2 for Group Floating_2) 2) I still want users from other groups to utilize all 10 floating licenses, if no user from Group A is log on to Remedy. Map of terms used above and below: Group A = Floating_2 Group B = Floating_8 This is a matter of a race condition for the license allocation. Which is always the case for Floating license in AR System. I see those races breaking down like the following. (Mostly due to controlling the order of the pools being picked from. Which is easy when there are only two groups involved. It gets much harder, if not impossible, when there are more than 2 groups involved.) ) If a member from _only_ Floating_2 tries to get a license before all of Floating_8's pool is used, then they will get one of the possible two Floating_2 license. Unless all of the Floating_2 license are already in use. ) If a member from _only_ Floating_2 tries to get a license _after_ all of Floating_8's pool is used, then it will depend on if the Floating_8 group have also used up any remaining Floating_2 license as well. ( So again... Unless all of the Floating_2 license are already in use.) ) If a member from _only_ Floating_2 tries to get a license _after_ all of Floating_2's pool is used then user 3..N = you must wait for a floating license. ) If a member from Floating_8 and Floating_2 tries to get a license and there are Floating_8 license available then they will be able to use upto 8 from that pool first. ) If a member from Floating_8 and Floating_2 tries to get a license and there are no Floating_8 license available and there are no Floating_2 people holding a license then they will be able to use up to all 10. ( So again... Unless all of the Floating_2 license are already in use.) ) If a member from Floating_8 and Floating_2 tries to get a license and there are no Floating_8 license available and there are no Floating_2 license available then they will not be able to get a license since all 10 are already in use. ( user 11..N = you must wait for a floating license) I think that covers all conditions. (Again It may not be possible to do as the number of groups get more and more complication.) On another side of the coin. An AREA plugin can hand out floating licenses So you could write whatever complicated (and/or messed up) logic you need in C or Java then you should be able to run it though a custom AREA plugin to get the effect that your after too. ( Including things like time of day, day of week, priority(SLA), blackout windows by groups, etc..., etc...) If the logic says No, for this user right now then assign them a read license. (Obviously, still subject to the max floating license on the server.) That just takes more time to do. But I am sure it could be done. If the business can describe how it should be done. :) -- Carey Matthew Black Remedy Skilled Professional (RSP) ARS = Action Request System(Remedy) Love, then teach Solution = People + Process + Tools Fast, Accurate, Cheap Pick two.
