[vchkpw] qmail - vpopmail delivery
Hello, Im having some issues, i recently reinstalled qmail and now, im able to send mail, but all mail received goes to /home/user/Maildir instead of vpopmail delivery. Can anyone suggest what files needs to be modified to get delivery back to the vpopmail instad of home directories ? Thanks. !DSPAM:4c23724932714595952374!
Re: [vchkpw] Qmail-vpopmail and delivery confermation
I've never had any issues with them personally (aside from not liking the concept) but as far as I know neither vpopmail nor qmail have anything to do with delivery confirmation. It's a MUA to MUA thing and the recipient can decide if he wants to confirm he read the message. Your client just needs to check the "confirm delivery" box in outlook. Re: [vchkpw] Qmail, vpopmail etc. migration: from Fedora Core 1 to CentOs
Sorry, hit wrong button... No for the software side, depending on how you have your mail setup, courier or pop3 depends on the mail itself. If it's pop3 you can move it just fine, as long as you setup vpopmail the same as before. If your using courier, you can use a program like imapsync (sourceforge) and sync the mail from old server to new server fairly easly. I'm sure with more info, and more planning on your part you can get this done. Try to determine how your old server was setup, eg. vpopmail, using mysql or cdb for the domains for 1, roaming encryption etc... Re: [vchkpw] qmail+vpopmail smtp-auth for roaming-users]
Hi All, Much thanks for all the helpful replies. I have reverted back to courier-imap v3.0.8, and all is now working as expected - open-smtp is being updated properly by both imap and pop3. Again thanks for quick replies and for pointing me in the right direction to resolve this!! Best regards to all. Otto. Courier no longer provides the IP address needed to authenticate roaming users. Hence it is IMPOSSIBLE for any roaming users to send mail?? So what's the solution (if any) - is it possible that ALL users who use courier-imap 4++ are unable to send email and this is acceptable to them?? SMTP Auth. Have the roaming users login to smtp by adding a user name and password to the outgoing mail server configuration of their browser, and enable that function. (The same one they use to receive mail) Since you are using Bill Shupp's toaster, it should already be installed on your server.
Re: [vchkpw] qmail+vpopmail smtp-auth for roaming-users]
Hi Joshua, Thanks for the reply. The majority of my users are using pop3 - however I have a handful of senior execs that need/want to use imap (this is tied to our webmail & wapmail interfaces). This cutomer was an existing user of qmail/vpopmail/courier (installed in 2003) however we just recently went through a major upgrade. The old system worked quite well (with open-smtp) for both pop3 and imap users. It appears from Micheal Bowe's reply that courier-imap v4.xx no longer supports this (but apparentl;y 3.0.8 does) - so I guess I will need to try and install the older version of courier-imap - unless I can find a diif but easy solution. RE: [vchkpw] qmail+vpopmail on redhat 7.3 server gets very busy
Hi, Run the commands: #Echo doublebounce >/var/qmail/control/doublebounceto #echo # >/var/qmail/alias/.qmail-doublebounce In this way doublebounces will go to the user doublebounce, who's .qmail file has nothing in it and so the mail will fall into a black hole. Re: [vchkpw] qmail+vpopmail+chkuser problems
I did that, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and thats the error I get, I'm missing something cuz even removing the patch its not storing email somehow. Even tho the mx isn't setup, I do it locally, telnet localhost 25 (which has to my knowledge everything I need to do email) it accepts it, but I dont show it coming up in my new folder under home/vpopmailMaildir. I'm missing something somewhere, lol I may just end up removing everything and just starting anew. Migrating is such a pain most of the time. Its not like I have thousands accounts, its like 5 or 6 max. I haven't actually checked but its not alot. Perhaps I didn't do the mysql migration properly. But I do a select * from vpopmail and it lists all the accounts exactly the same as the primary. Idont get errors adding email accounts either so I'm at a lost. -doug > At 06.08 11/09/2005, you wrote: >>Ok I did run the test like you said, I loged in as root stoped qmail and >>ran /var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd manually >> >>and I still get the error >> >>511 sorry, you must specify a domain (#5.1.1 - chkuser). > > Well, it means you are using a recipients without specifying a domain. > It's a chkuser setting, that you may exclude if you don't like. > Better you specify a default domain within vpopmail. > > Anyway, why don't you try a normal complete address like > [EMAIL PROTECTED] > > Tonino > >>Per my previous conversation I did compile UID and GID switching, an >> below >>you can see I changed the bit so that it can do this, however; even as >>root it still doesn't work and I think I'm going to be forced to remove >>the patch and just go about business like usual. [vchkpw] Qmail + vpopmail using qmail-ldap schema.
Hey, I am trying to get a new email server working using qmail+vpopmail+ldap. The user software we have will export users to the qmail-ldap schema. The problem is that it looks like the vpopmail ldap schema is not the same as the qmail-ldap schema. Is there a way to make vpopmail work with the qmail-ldap schema or do I have to get rid of vpopmail and just use qmail-ldap? Could I posible map the qmail-ldap schema to the vpopmail schema? I was also thinking that I might be able to use vpopmail with mysql and import from the ldap server via a user script of some sort. Any thoughts? Josh

Hi all, I'm using set of software as in topic. I've got line my.domain:my.domain line in virtualdomains file in qmail control dir. My virual domain is also default domain. Reply message going from autorespond has sender address as [EMAIL PROTECTED] which is definitely wrong. Line included in dotqmail causing autoreply to work contains $ as the last sing. If I use + instead of $ sign autoreply message goes with empty sender address which is also not acceptable for me. When we first came to the need for a more powerful MTA back in 1999, qmail+vpopmail+qmailadmin seemed to be the best features wise, and administration wise. In dealing with the ever growing spam, a re-evaluation in 2003 lead us to believe that qmail+vpopmail+qmailadmin still had a slight edge over the others, including postfix. As Rainer said, it seems that postfix has more upfront, but it still seems that qmail can be patched very well. Currently, I'm running qmail+vpopmail+qmailadmin, qmail-scanner w/ClamAV, mailfilter invoking SpamAssassin for userbased SA. Qmails only holdback is the lack of development (but does a stable secure MTA need development?), patches add features as needed. But, its not like MTA requirements has changed over the years, it's the MDA, and that's easy to plug something else in its place. --joey

Once vpopmail is abstracted from qmail that would be easy. :) I fully realize that everyone who uses vpopmail also uses qmail. Me too. A lot of people like qmail. Others would like to be able to use vpopmail (which is great) with other MTA that they are more familiar with or just prefer. This isn't anti-qmail its pro-vpopmail. -Steve

However, it's not very featureful -- which is fine for replacing most versions of sendmail anyway. I believe that the majority of sendmail installations do not use STARTTLS or SMTP AUTH. (in re patches) Funny. I've never thought so. One thing I like about having to patch qmail is the ability to decide at compile-time what extensions I want to use. This allows me to limit the amount of unused code compiled into my MTA. (In the era of modern computing and the prevalence of CPU's well over 2GHz, this may not mean a lot. However, I run qmail on a 50MHz SparcStation LX and I'm a bit picky about what goes into it.) Having only ever compiled Postfix once (and many moons ago at that), I do not know if the same option is present there. But I'm wandering off topic for the vpopmail list. Ooh... While we're at it, we could add vpopmail support for sendmail... ^_~ Sincerely, Chris Ess System Administrator / CDTT (Certified Duct Tape Technician)

Yes I agree I extensively used qmail/vpopmail at the ISP I used to own. However, I sold the business to a larger ISP last year, and now "I work for them". They use postfix as their standard mail server. Since being exposed to this software I marvel at all the fabulous features compared with qmail. In particular the ease that you can perform a vast array of checks / filtering on incoming mail. The more I see of postfix, the more I understand just how out-of-date that qmail really is. But! whenever I demonstrate the vpopmail software to any of the guys at my new place of employment, they are the ones who are marvelling at the ease of use and features of vpopmail. I don't think that the problem is vpopmail, the problem is qmail: after 6 years since 1.03 version there's no modific to the original version, now you always need addictional feature like antivirus integration, more spam filters, a lot of other things... this lead to a patch-over-patch phenomenon that is an headace for the qmail administrator. So you need a toaster like netqmail-1.05 + bill shupp patches, but sometimes this is not enoght. On the other hand postfix is active developed even on the core. So i think that the problem of qmail is its license and it's author's ego. > be picking back up again. Even QMail seems to be at least partially > back under development with the Netqmail package. [vchkpw] QMail + Vpopmail vs. Postfix + Cyrus IMAP
Howdy folks, Sorry for the flame bait, but I'm just curious what all you seasoned vpopmail veterans have to say about Postfix + Cyrus. Back in 2002 when my company chose to go with QMail + Vpopmail I thought it was the Right Choice, but these days I'm hearing a lot about Postfix + Cyrus. For a while there, it seemed like vpopmail development was grinding to a halt, but these days it seems to be picking back up again. Even QMail seems to be at least partially back under development with the Netqmail package. It's giving me hope for the platform that I've invested so much of my personal time into. For those of you who have had the opportunity to work with BOTH systems, which do you prefer and why? BTW, I currently run QMail + vpopmail & friends + courier-imap + sqwebmail. Is there some alternatives to do this without OPEN RELAY? Use tonix's qmail-smtp/vpopmail auth patch. Smtp authentication is the cleanest way to go. [vchkpw] qmail + vpopmail authentication (SMTPafterPOP)
Hi, I have a system with netqmail 1.05 + vpopmail 5.4.0 + sqwebmail 4.0.5 + qmailadmin 1.2.0 + clamav 0.73 + qmailscanner. Now, I'd like to do some kind of SMTP authetication using the idea of SMTPafterPOP, to use the vpopmail users (into vpasswd file) to authenticate the sending of emails. I found some patches for QMail, but I'm doubt about the functionality of its with vpopmail users database. I work in a school and there are other units of it that uses internet providers with dinamic IPs. Then, all the time I need to change /etc/tcp.smtp to add the actual IP address for the list of external users to do SMTP relay. But I think if I will have SMTP authentication, I may do a QMail OPEN RELAY and all will work fine. Is this TRUE or I'm CRAZY to think about OPEN RELAY? [vchkpw] Qmail, Vpopmail, Sqwebmail, Courier-IMAP and Gentoo
Hello, I am trying to setup an email system and use Sqwebmail as a web-based frontend. I am doing this on a Gentoo box. I have installed Qmail, Vpopmail and Courier-IMAP via gentoo's portage system. I have it all configured and sending/receiving email properly (from what I can tell) by following the doc at: http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/qmail-howto.xml The doc recommends installing "Horde / IMP Webmail" for web-based email but I liked sqwebmail better because it directly accesses the Maildir files instead of going through POP or IMAP. So I went about trying to get sqwebmail installed (an there currently does not exist a portage package for this). I am building sqwebmail without authdeamon support because the Courier-IMAP package already installs the authdeamon with it. The package builds and installs fine. The sqwebmail service starts up and I get the login screen when I execute the CGI script through apache. I type in my login information and it appears to login successfully but gets an error when it tries to find my Maildir folders. The following is the error message I get: Unable to open the maildir for this account -- the maildir doesn't exist or has incorrect ownership or permissions. I was thinking that perhaps this is because gentoo uses the name ".maildir" instead of "Maildir" to store the mail files. I looked in the auth.c file for my error message and found the following line: if (login_maildir(getenv("MAILDIR"))) error("Unable to open the maildir for this account -- the maildir doesn't exist or has incorrect ownership or permissions."); So my thought is to set the MAILDIR environment variable to match Gentoo's setup. So I put the following line in my Apache conf for this particular virtual host: SetEnv MAILDIR .maildir Despite my efforts to point it to the correct place I still get the same error message. So I am stuck. My questions are: 1) Am I even asking this question to the correct group. The sqwebmail docs said to ask any questions that relate to vpopmail to this list. 2) Is there something I am missing. I want it to login to my mailbox under vpopmail. The authentication module it is using is the authvchkpw and it seems to be at least authenticating. 3) Any suggestions? I greatly appreciate any help that I can get (or simply a pointer to the correct place to ask this). Thanks, Eric

So from last two days its gone? Confusing. I have just my domain running on qmail and mails keep moving in and out without any problem. At first i got bugged but later kept quiet thinking this is a kind of issue related with Maildir or maildir. To be frank, i'm still not able to trace the problem i'm facing because of this. By its meaning, 'deferred' means delayed, unable to chdir_to_maildir, maybe because the mail in my box does'nt reach directly to the user inbox, i.e., mail is handled by qmail-scanner, Clam AV and SpamAssassin and then to inbox. Thought of all these and closed the issue by myself. If anyone educates me and Christopher more on this, we'll be very much thankful to them. :) Dheeraj.
[vchkpw] qmail + vpopmail - broken deliveries to a single domain
Hello all, I have a really odd problem. Let me first say that this does not appear to be a permissions problem, though it would at first glance. The problem domain we'll call example.edu. When you send an email to any of the addresses @example.edu, it will be deferred with the following message in the logs: delivery 25: deferral: Unable_to_chdir_to_maildir._(#4.2.1)/ As I mentioned, at first glance, you would check permissions. All that appears to be well though. Here's what /var/qmail/users/assign looks like: +example.edu-:example.edu:89:89:/var/vpopmail/domains/example.edu:-:: +test.com-:test.com:89:89:/var/vpopmail/domains/test.com:-:: . Here's the directory structure for /var/vpopmail/domains/exmaple.edu/... (btw, vpopmail and vchkpw are uid 89): drwxr-xr-x 23 rootwheel512 May 25 10:45 /var/ drwxr-xr-x 9 vpopmail vchkpw 512 May 25 11:16 /var/vpopmail/ drwx-- 4 vpopmail vchkpw 512 May 25 11:02 /var/vpopmail/domains/ drwx-- 148 vpopmail vchkpw 4608 May 25 11:29 /var/vpopmail/domains/example.edu/ drwx-- 3 vpopmail vchkpw 512 Jan 31 2002 /var/vpopmail/domains/example.edu/tmoore/ drwx-- 25 vpopmail vchkpw 1024 May 25 04:37 /var/vpopmail/domains/example.edu/tmoore/Maildir/ drwx-- 2 vpopmail vchkpw 512 May 24 13:02 /var/vpopmail/domains/example.edu/tmoore/Maildir/new/ So, permissions look fine. I added the test.com to do some testing and it's working just fine with the same permissions and everything. I thought that perhaps I hit some sort of bug or limit with the number of users you can have in a single domain as example.edu has 3073, but I added 3500 users to test.com and all is well. The /var/vpopmail/domains/example.edu/vpasswd file looks OK too. I'm at a loss. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm guessing my last-resort plan will be to backup /var/vpopmail/domains/example.edu/, re-setup the domain and then recreate all the email accounts, copy back emails...big headache. :) Best wishes, - Chris This email was created with 100% recycled electrons.

[vchkpw] qMail + vPopMail working together better
This message is being sent to the vpopmail mailing list and the qmail mailing list I have been using qmail and vpopmail for a while now, but i am seeing some major things that should be addressed, to make the two work together better. The first being that if a user does not exist for a domain that vpopmail has, that it should drop the message immediately SMTPD level, and not send a email message, as this can cause a lot of trouble. Consider the following: Someone is sending you 100 messages an hour to a local domain that vpopmail handles, and it does not eexist. It will put the message in the queue, get vdelivermail to parse it, and then vdelivermail will create a bounce message and tell the sender that the account does not exist. The problem with this is though, that we have is that all those 100's of messages are messages with viruses. Now what we have is us bouncing back an email to an address that might not even exist, if it does exists its kinda bad for the person getting it as they will get 1000's of bounce messages, but if it does not exist, and is a qmail server as well, or Windows or whatever, it will sometimes also generate a bounce email instead of just a SMTP error code. Thus what happens now, is that we also get all the bounce messages back that the user does not exist. To the postmaster account. Making more unnecessary data transfer over the net. (Every bit counts). What i think qmail should include, is a way to have an program (Thus we do not want it hard coded, to keep it modular) to check if a users account exist, so that way you can run a program for the stock qmail to check if the unix user exists, and vpopmail can include code so that we can check the domains structure for the domain and user, and if the program exits with an error code, we drop the email at smtpd lever, thus not generating bounce messages, as the users local mail server will do that, saying that they gave up cause it did not work out. Another thing that would greatly be good to the qmail community and vpopmail, is support for auth. I know there are auth patches out there, but if it were included in the default release, it could include better support for it. Like with the qmail-pop3d its possible to choose what application to run to check the users email and account, on the stock this is check password, on the vpopmail install, this would be vchkpw. Now the current problem is that qmail AUTH patches are available freely, but they limit you if you use it with vchkpw, as you have to run qmail-smtpd and qmail-pop3d as root, to be able to authenticate with the services, or you have a problem, and you can not login. What i suggest is that somehow we make it work together, either under the same uid, and gid, or some other way. I can currently not think of any other good ways. That way we can run qmail-smtpd more secure, as i personally do not like having stuff running as root. Another feature i would like to see included with the stock qmail, but which is not really a major problem. Is qmail-imapd =). It would be great to have something like it, that works just like qmail-pop3d, and is just as fast, safe and modular. Thats all folks. J-W

After lots of searching it transpired that that eth0 was behaving unreliably, but only for outgoing trafic. My test-machine was an old 200 MHz Dell Optiplex. [vchkpw] qmail/vpopmail: sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1.)
Hi, I have just done a fresh install of qmail and vpopmail, on Mandrake 9.1, following Dave Sill, http://web.infoave.net/~dsill/lwq.html for the qmail installation. qmail is running fine; i.e. all four daemons are running and inst_check reports that all is well. I also managed to install vpopmail and add domains and users. Booth messages injected locally (using qmail-inject) and incomming messages via smtp (from KMail on another machine) duely arrive in the appropriate Maildir/new. However, when I attempt to send to an extern email-address (from KMail) qmail responds with the error message: "sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1.)". OK, the messaage is from qmail, but I think it is related to vpopmail, as I also have qmail (without vpopmail) running on another PC, and on with that machine I have no problems sending to external addresses. I installed vpopmail as follows: ./configure --enable-file-sync=y --enable-roaming-users=y make make install-strip and put 10.0.0.:allow,RELAYCLIENT 192.168.2.:allow,RELAYCLIENT into /etc/tcp.smtp and added 40 * * * * /home/vpopmail/bin/clearopensmtp 2>&1 /dev/null to crontab. The last response to [vchkpw] smtp;553 sorry, sorry, that domain isn't allowed relay (#5.7.1) i.e http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg14771.html suggest putting 127.:allow,RELAYCLIENT into /etc/tcp.smtp I have also tried that, but it didn't make any difference. Booth the above response and the vpopmail install instructions mention /etc/tcp.smtp, but I can find anything about /home/vpopmail/etc/tcp.smtp What's the latter for? Any ideas what's wrong? procmail is a mail filter, not a replacement for vpopmail, so just install procmail and you will not need to migrate anything. - Original Message - From: "Neo Wee Teck" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Monday, October 13, 2003 4:53 PM Subject: RE: [vchkpw] Qmail + vpopmail + Spamassassin Does procmail support support virtual domains like vpopmail? RE: [vchkpw] qmail + vpopmail + maildrop + sqwebmail + qmailadmin + vqadmin
Not quite sure how your setup is.. but I finally got maildrop/vpopmail working for me by using a version of vpopmail that has the seekable patch and putting a .qmail file inside each user's directory who wants a spam filter. It has worked out beneficially for me because the spam filter can now be set on a per-user basis instead of a per-domain basis when I was doing it through .qmail-default. Quotas seem to work just fine with both maildrop 1.3.8 and 1.6.0, I haven't really noticed a difference. It supposedly ignores the MAILDIRQUOTA variable now and just reads the maildirquota file, but I haven't removed the MAILDIRQUOTA variable from my maildrop script either. Haven't seen a need for it, system is performing just fine and I doubt removing that line would make a very notiacable different. A thing to note about the .qmail method inside each user's directory is that vpopmail hands the message off to maildrop and maildrop then acts as the delivery agent in place of vpopmail. The other cool thing about having it on a per-user basis is that I don't need to worry about people clobbering their .qmail-default file with qmailadmin. Hope that helps some.. -Clayton -Original Message- From: Casey Zacek [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, August 27, 2003 8:19 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [vchkpw] qmail + vpopmail + maildrop + sqwebmail + qmailadmin + vqadmin It's been a long long time since I last looked at this stuff, but I really want/need to implement it. 1 - qmail - is simple. 2 - vpopmail + maildrop - this is where i am now (again). As I recall it, my problems went something like this: A. I had to "mkdir courier" when building maildrop to get it to read MAILDIRQUOTA from the environment. B. I had to write some shell scripts to wrap maildrop for the actual delivery, basically to take the place of vdelivermail. Right now, I'm not sure why, but I think it was in order to get quotas working properly; setting the MAILDIRQUOTA, HOME, and DEFAULT environment vars. In the end, they call "maildrop -d vpopmail .mailfilter" I had to patch vpopmail to use these scripts instead of vdelivermail. C. I had apparently patched vdominfo to add a -A flag to display domain aliases. D. I had apparently patched vpopmail to not allow one to delete a domain if there were aliases for it. Anyway, it's been a long time since I really looked at this stuff. The last version of vpopmail I looked at was 5.3.3, and the last version of maildrop I looked at was 1.3.8. I just looked at the changelog for maildrop up to 1.6.0, and I see that there was some work on the quota handling, so I might not need my shell scripts anymore. Basically, I'm looking for any pointers for getting vpopmail, maildrop, and sqwebmail working together nicely. I'll be using MySQL on the backend for vpopmail, and (of course?) Maildirs for storing the email. Thanks in advance.. -- Casey Zacek Senior Engineer NeoSpire, Inc.

Re: [vchkpw] qmail+vpopmail+openldap+qmailadmin in redhat7.3
lixiang, I'd encountered exactly the same problem(-ERR aack, child crashed) with vchkpw using LDAP as backend. I'd tried many different configurations and finally it seem like I can get around this problem. The solution is configure vpopmail with --enable-clear-passwd=n parameter. My configure statement looks like: ./configure --enable-ldap=y --enable-clear-passwd=n I have no idea how this fix the problem, but it's something with the authentication. Hi, Jens: actually, my rootdn was " cn=root,dc=koal,dc=com" in both my vldap.h and slapd.conf in the before, and i ensured that the basedn in vldap.h was "ou=people,dc=koal,dc=com" . i tested what you mentioned just now, this cann't help me . the "err acck ,child crashed " error remains. if i input a user which doesn't exsit, it will reports " err authorization failed". if i input the correct user and password, it will reports" err acck, child crashed" . i think it has recognized the user and password ,but sth lead to the "child crashed" error. i have searched the vpopmail mailing list, there were many reports about the same error, and it seems that many reasons will lead to this error, but until now, i still havn't find any valuable solution to me. my configure parameters: ./configure --enalbe-ldap=y --enable-roaming-users=y --enable-logging=y redhat 7.3 vpopmail-5.3.20 openldap-2.0.27 qmailadmin-1.0.20 any suggestions? thanks a lot, :-),

It is just an "internal" User !! So you might try this. And remenber ! Your organisation ( dc=koal,dc=com ) and your arganisational Unit ( ou=people, dc=koal, dc=com) must both exist !!
