RE: [Zappa-List] YAWYI resolved, the question is...
Yes the TTNS most defiantly has several tracks that also appear on The Dub Room Special. I did the original VHS rip that has been on Dimeadozen/EZT and Zappateers as well as being vine'd here more than once. In addition to that I started I vine of the Room 101 bootleg of the KCET concert that makes up the remainder of the live footage in Dub Room. Then there was the Steve Allen and much more vine. That one contains the entire Dub Room Special. Also there are some VCD versions of TTNS going around. All of these have footage in common with Dub Room but probably less than 30% at the most. I would propose that any vines that contain common footage with the Dub Room should be officially discontinued on this list. Some newer members on this list may not be aware that as well as appearing here, posts to this list also appear on a publicly accessible web page somewhere that I became aware of about a year ago. I guess they still do. Certainly serious collectors are going to want these full concerts for their collections though as The Dub Room only has a few selections from each show. I guess what I'm trying to say is that any trading or vining concerning these shows probably should be done off list if at all. I think all these vines were/are still active. Also I would encourage everyone to purchase the official Dub Room. Even though I have a couple of different high quality bootleg versions I'll be placing my order this weekend. It's a steal at just over ten bucks. [Zappa-List] A little change in the Orphanage
The orphanage seems to be working far better than I imagined. I had imagined the orphaned vines would spend more time there before being adopted out. For this reason I have modified the controls to the data base allowing group members to edit and delete. It occurred to me that perhaps the vines don’t need to be completely removed too. Just the email address and date orphaned. That way when the vine becomes orphaned again the date could be added back in along with a new email address. Or the whole thing could be deleted and then re-entered. Whatever everyone thinks would be the best. I was partially motivated to make this change because I’m going on vacation this week in California and won’t be back until December. RE: [Zappa-List] Zappa - Lennon
It does seem that way although it seems like I remember hearing that it was a Zappa & the Mothers show (Fillmore East June 5, 1971) and John and Yoko were in the audience. As I recall they were talked into coming up on stage. I suppose there may be an audience shot video of the whole show out there somewhere. I had to download a whole Lennon DVD just to get this one clip that I wanted. Too bad there wasn’t a camera shooting from the left that could have gotten a better angle on Frank. In particular I suspect an ear to ear grin as Yoko started singing. I thought John looked a little surprised as Zappa starts tearing into his guitar part. Does anybody know if Frank ever talked about this impromptu performance? RE: [Zappa-List] Message delays - was VO: 1967 & 1969 - FLAC & SHN formats
I think it could be Yahoo. I haven’t noticed anything this week but starting in early November I noticed some list mail from this and another yahoo group being delayed by up to a day for personal delivery. Test mails sent from one of my other accounts always came right in on time. I’ve been using yahoo groups from almost when they started it and they have always had intermittent problems like this. The best thing to do is read directly from the website if you want to get faster delivery. Unfortunately it’s sometimes the opposite problem where I send one from my email client and it takes a long time to get to yahoo. The solution there is to post from the website but I need my spell checker. Anyway these problems always seem to get worked out after a while. Yahoo groups as a whole is a huge network with a tremendous volume of traffic and I think glitches are just normal. Plus it’s free ;-) Jim L From: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, December 14, 2005 6:20 AM To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Subject: [Zappa-List] Message delays - was VO: 1967 & 1969 - FLAC & SHN formats Greetings Nick, I would be not pleased if messages took 2 days to reach my inbox too. Yes, the technology is failing you... I'm curious regarding a couple of things: how many others have this same trouble (not the occasional message out of order, but the repeated and unacceptable delays with individual emails - a 2-day lag is outrageous), and what have they done (if anything) to rectify the issue with Yahoo, or their server - as, it seems to me, that's where the trouble lies? I'm the first to say Yahoo sucks, so don't think I'm defending then; I've not experienced the trouble you're having. The lineage method we employ was set up in response to numerous complaints about the "Old Way" to which you wish to return. I care not how it's done; I'm rarely involved in them anyway, and don't mind waiting when I am. My concern is how many are effected; more than those who had an issue with the old way? Remember Kids, it's your group - not mine. I merely attempt to keep as many members happy as I can... RE: [Zappa-List] CD Software
That’s why I don’t use it. I would always forget to click the box every few times. Nero is good software but a setting like that shouldn’t have to be made every burn. I like Roxio 7. It defaults to no gap and always burns DAO (Disc at Once). It can even overlap the tracks if I want with a fade in and out effect. Burnatonce is a free software that only needs the box checked once and then it stays checked. It does a good job of burning too. Burrrn is another good free burning software. It can utilize EAC’s cue sheets for making perfect CD copies. EAC is really the best riper but it’s burning portion doesn’t work with some drives. RE: [Zappa-List] Ripping?
mr_and_mrs_skull asked - All, What precisely is ripping, as opposed to merely burning and copying? Mr. Skull I think the term first gained popular usage when mp3 caught on. A music CD (usually factory made) would be inserted and the act of producing mp3 files on the hard drive from it was termed ripping. I guess a new term was necessary in that audio on a music CD is in a format that can’t be stored on a hard drive. CDDA or compact digital disc format. So to get the music onto your hard drive it can’t be just copied but rather must be changed to a different format. Wav files are almost bit for bit identical to CDDA but the header is a little different on CDDA by design so that it can’t be copied so easily. At least that’s what they thought back in the early eighties. Mp3 is of course not similar at all and most of the digital information must be discarded when mp3 is created. Flac and shn files still contain all of the data from the original wav file but store it a bit more compactly and can be expanded back into the original wav file. With mp3 you can expand back to wav but you can never get back the information that’s been tossed out. That’s why they’re referred to as lossy while wav, flac and shn are considered lossless. Much of the information that gets tossed out in the creation of mp3 isn’t even audible however and that’s why they can sound as good as the do. Results seem to vary dramatically to my ear depending on what encoder is used. To me LAME makes the very best mp3 and razorlame is a good front end for it. Both are free. Then DVD entered the picture. Commercially produced DVD is encrypted and so can’t be directly copied to the hard drive or disc ether. So ripping software for DVD became available in short order. It decrypts the files so that they can be copied. Unencrypted DVD’s like we share here can be directly copied to the hard drive. Also if you do a direct disc copy of a CD it doesn’t have to be ripped to another format but can directly copy the CDDA files. The belief that EAC (exact audio copy) software is superior at reading the disc however has lead to the practice of ripping an audio CD into wav files first and then authoring a new CD from them rather than doing a disc copy. Everything I’ve read as well as my own experiences seems to back up this belief. Ideally a software could read the disc like EAC but create a disc image from the data instead of making wav files. That would avoid converting from CDDA to wav and then back to CDDA just to copy a disc. Perhaps EAC will get around to that in the future. RE: [Zappa-List] Re: Ripping?
Well I’m convinced that EAC is superior at reading the disc. It’s the conversion from CDDA file to wav file that I would prefer to avoid. Other software is capable of sort of storing CDDA on the hard drive in the form of a disc image. Burnatonce for one and it can be set to perform additional read checks when reading the disc. I don’t think it’s comparable to EAC’s secure mode though. EAC does have the ability to create a wav image and a cue sheet that can be used to make an exact copy. The digital files are still converted to wav and then back again though. I’ve never personally experienced any of the clicks and pops doing a direct disc copy with Roxio ether but I do still use EAC just to be sure. Still I think that most of the time a direct disc copy comes out fine. If your disc is damaged at all then EAC is the only way to go. RE: [Zappa-List] Possible new vine???
Do you mean that the 83 minute time still needs corrected? Or are you saying that it already has been? There’s no mention of it having been done by Bengofury. If you mean that it still needs corrected I might have a go at it. The problem then becomes the pitch. What if someone has already corrected the pitch digitally without correcting the speed? This can be done these days. My wav editing software can correct the speed with or without changing the pitch. I think it can also correct the pitch without affecting the speed too. Perhaps my ears can be my guide. I might need to wait for the snot to clear out of them first. Had a bad cold that somehow filled my inner ears with snot. It’s cut my hearing down to very little. The doc says it will clear out in 3 to 4 weeks. In the mean time I’m just not enjoying music like I used to. It’s true that we never miss some things until there gone. Here's a little something I whipped out last night, in between the moisture cream and velvet facial lotion, which I'd like to share... Seasonal Blessings to All! 'Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house not a creature was stirring, not me - or my spouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that Carl, or a diploma, soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, while visions of watermelons danced in their heads. And Mama in her "na'kin", and I in my cap, were hoping to sleep off all the seasonal crap. When out on the roof there arose such a clatter, I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, tore open the shutter, and fell flat on my ass. The moon on the titties of the new-fallen snow gave the luster of cheepnis to objects below, when, what to my wondering eyes should appear, but a miniature band, and all kinds of gear. With a little old conductor, so ugly and rank, I knew in a moment it must be St. Frank. More rapid than eagles, his curses they came, and he whistled and shouted and called them by name: "Now Ikie! Now Stevie! Now, Arthur and Vinnie! On, Warren! On, Napi! On, George, Ruth, and Howie! To the top of the arena! To the top of the Hall! We waited all night, but you didn't try to call!" As vegetables that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky so up to the house-top the cursers they flew, with the band full of horns, and Uncle Frank too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the top the prancing and pawing of the Pachuco Hop. As I drew in my head and was turning around, down the chimney Uncle Frank came with a bound. He was dressed all in purple, from his head to his foot, and his clothes were completed with a pair of python boots. A bundle of tapes he had flung on his back, and he looked like a road manager just opening his pack. His eyes--oh how piercing! His hair cut, how bonkers! His cheeks were rosettas, his nose was a honker! His droll little mouth was drawn up in a sneer, and the hair on his chin made just who he was clear. The stump of a Winston he held tight in his teeth, and the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a gaunt face and barely any belly, And with those boots finally off, you knew it'd be smelly. He was dark and severe, a curmudgeonly old elf, and I gave him the finger, in spite of myself. A wink of his eye and a twist of his hand soon showed me how deftly he directed his band. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, and finished by mumbling, "Jesus thinks you're a jerk". And laying his finger aside of his nose, and giving a nod, he struck his famed Collier's pose. Then he sprang to his bus, that he'd named Phydeaux III, And away they all flew singing "Absolutely Free". But I heard him exclaim, 'ere they drove out of sight, "Thanks for coming to the concert, Boys and Girls - good night!" RE: [Zappa-List] Two years passed...thanks
I may be as crazy as you Bart. I bought my son a guitar that he never plays anymore. The other day I picked it up and played with it a while. I’ve never tried to play before but I’m thinking maybe it’s never too late to learn. All these years of intense listening can’t have hurt any. I noticed the attachment to your message. You can take the large .dat files in the MPEGAV folder and rename them to video1.mpg and for the second disc video2.mpg. At that point you can watch them on the PC. To make a VCD of them use VCDGear. If they are proper files it should take them and create a disc image that you can burn with Nero or anything like that. It’s free software. http://www.vcdgear.com/download.html I like the lineage the guy put with these on dime. “lineage: VHS tape from shooter -> Media Cleaner for Macintosh -> VCD; I put the VHS tape into a Media 100 on a Mac, then used Media Cleaner to render the VCD. The computer was facing south. I burned the VCD onto a Maxell CDR at 2X speed then I put the CDR into a bag and brought it home. When I got home I put the VCD on a shelf with some other VCD's. Later I went out for dinner at a nice Thai place, it's close by so I walked. The next morning I had a shower and went to work.” Let us know if there any good. A little background : the Actuel festival was organized by the publication of the same name (who, under different editorship, went on to become a prime mover of the French counterculture in the early to mid-70s) in collaboration with the fledgling BYG label. It was originally going to take place in or near Paris, but French authorities forbid it and the marquee was eventually set up a few miles outside the French border, on Belgian soil. It took place over 5 nights, entertaining an audience of 15- 20,000 to a unique mixture of progressive pop, free jazz and contemporary music. Frank Zappa was present at the festival (well, the first four days, it seems) in a twofold capacity. First, as Captain Beefheart's road manager; secondly, as M.C., assisting Pierre Lattes, a famous radio/TV presenter at the time (and the pop music editor for Actuel magazine). The latter task proved problematic given FZ's very limited mastery of French, the prevailing language among the audience, who themselves didn't seem to understand much English. Instead, FZ relinquished his M.C. job for one of occasional guest guitarist. As far as I know, with the exception of FZ's performance with Captain Beefheart, this collects all of his jams with participating bands. A couple of films, directed by Jerome Laperrousaz and Jean-Noel Roy, came out in 1970 but were instantly banned because of objections from various bands (most notably Pink Floyd) whose permission hadn't been properly secured. Zappa's performance with Beefheart is included in one of them, and since the audio of the film (unlike the film itself) is in circulation, possibly in better sound than I could provide, I decided not to include it. This is an interesting item from the comments on this one. Here' a link to an MP3 of a Society Pages interview with FZ from 12-22-1989 about the Amougies Festival: http://jaypfunk.home.comcast.net/fzpf.mp3 He denies he jammed with Pink Floyd. I always thought Zappa's mind and memory were as sharp as a whip, but it appears he spaced on this one. (Maybe he OD'd on turnip fumes at the Festival!) What do you guys think? Did Zappa jam on this PF tune or not? Most legendary, of course, is Frank Zappa's jam with Pink Floyd on a very extended "Interstellar Overdrive". Apparently, despite the wealth of Pink Floyd bootlegs in circulation, no one seems to have their Amougies set, so this will probably delight a lot of people. Browing various PF-related websites, there even seems to be a debate on whether the jam ever took place. Well, here is the final proof that it did. Now, the tracklist: 1. Now I work at a university and have spent a good deal of time around the theatre department. While I can imagine the students giving this one all they had, I can't imagine the Dean or administration letting them do it. I can only commend the University of Michigan and any involved in this project back in 1999. What we have here is a decent band and a bunch of young people that really did justice to Joe's story and our favorite composer. (imho) I'm not usually much for choreographed shows but this is an exception. They didn't clean it up any that I noticed ether. Ike helps out on Lucile and maybe a couple of other places. You might try DVD decriptor on it before sending it on. I’ve had it read discs that wouldn’t copy before. It’s become vary hard to find for download so I’ve made it available here on my web space for a day or two. http://www.regyptionstrut.com/free/secret.zip It will (if it can) make the VIDEO_TS folder on your hard drive. Then with Nero follow these instructions. Jim L BURNING A DOWNLOADED DVD IN NERO Since (I think) V5, Nero has included DVD burning and creation in it's suite of programs. If all you want to do is burn an exact copy of what you've downloaded, then you need to go to the Nero Burning Rom part of the program-this is the 'classic' Nero interface which has remained pretty much the same for years now (Other than having DVD burning added to it). It's usually found in Start>programs>Nero>. In mine it's under Nero 6 Ultra Version, yours will be whatever version of the program you've got, but it will be there. When you do get there, a wizard will open-make sure DVD is selected them choose 'DVD Video' A possible alternate way to get to this part of the suite is from the Nero Smart Start desktop logo, choose DVD, then hit the Photo and Video icon and choose 'Burn DVD-Video Files' Whichever method you've use so far, you will now see a 4 pane window-in the second pane you will see two red folders, audio_ts and video_ts-click on the video_ts one. Now, in pane 3 navigate to wherever on your hard drive the DVD you downloaded is stored, and click on it so it opens up in panel 4. You should see audio_ts and video_ts folders again (It's possible that no audio_ts folder will be there). Click on the video_ts folder, highlight ALL the files in there and drag them across to pane 2. Now all you need to do is stick a blank disc in, and hit the 'Burn' icon along the top and your DVD will start to burn. That's it, really!! What you don't want to do is use Nerovision Express unless you specifically want to change the structure of the disc. This will be a long, drawn out process that will result in the footage probably being re-encoded, and you will lose the menu's. Well it’s the first track on Hot Rats. I think getting a full copy of Hot Rats might be a good place to start. I remember the first time I heard Peaches and it hit me vary well too. In fact when I was about 20 year old (many years ago) I used a timer on my bedroom stereo system with a tape of Hot Rats in it for my alarm clock. To begin I bought a "best of album" to get a sampling (with over 70+ albums to chose from and such a wide variety it is hard to choose!). [Zappa-List] Vault radio
I just listened to Peaches En Regalia 06/05/1971 Fillmore East on vault radio. Looks like it’s the only Zappa in the rotation today. The audio quality sounds to be excellent and there’s a whole concert in that vault to go with it. Probably several Zappa shows in there. Bill Graham’s recordings sound excellent and seem to be in true stereo. I’ve already emailed the vault to try and persuade them to make entire shows available for download in a lossless format. I gather that these shows were all recorded on reel to reel. http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/ Click on vault radio Jim L For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. RE: [Zappa-List] New To Group with Questions-
I’ll let others comment on the rest. Vines are a way of sharing recordings of live shows. Many if not all of FZ’s shows were recorded by not only audience members. Well mixed and engineered sound board recordings exist as well. While most are kept in a vault by the Zappa family, many have been leaked out over the years. A fair sized trickle in just the last few years. Never to be sold they are shared freely among the fans. The term vine refers to one method where the original disk is passed around and copied. You can get exact details of how we do it here in the faq http://tinyurl.com/gpp8e Jim L From: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of sharpdressedmaniac2005 Sent: Sunday, March 19, 2006 5:32 PM To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Subject: [Zappa-List] New To Group with Questions- Hey folks, have been a fan since the seventh grade (1969)when I traded John Lennon's Life With The Lions for FZ's Absolutely Free. Have been a hard core fan since. Only got to see Frank live five times (six, if you count the two back to back shows on one night) when I came of age in Austin,Texas. Regretfully, never saw him with Ian Underwood. I am finally buying Zappa on CD and am dividing my purchases between classics and the flood of posthumous work coming from Ryko etc. Here's my 1st question- I bought the Lather box set. When playing it on my PC, often the titles appearing are not actually those playing. Is this an FZ joke from the grave? I remember when first obtaining Absolutely Free on vinyl, experiencing my frustration in that the grooves that usually separated the tracks were offset making it impossible to start a compostion on cue- later on I would laugh thinking this was FZ's way of fucking with the DJs and making you listen to his work by the side/concept rather than by the single. Question 2- Anybody know of any interesting sources for Ian Underwood or Don Preston? I have been to Don's site, emailing himn from there has provoked no response. I would like to order some of his and Bunk Gardners CDs but do not want to send money if the operation is defunct. Question 3- what is a vine? Question 4- any Varese fan's out there? I see on Overstock.com that there will be a Varese biography available there soon. For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. This software is superb for compressing and decompressing both flac and shn with windows. http://thor.prohosting.com/roh0205/ Jim L From: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com [mailto:Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com] On Behalf Of [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, March 29, 2006 6:37 AM To: Zappa-List@yahoogroups.com Subject: Re: [Zappa-List] VO Felt Forum possible reorder? for addition Didn't know if anyone noticed... The 31st is two disks, both shows - so that would add another 4 to the package. I was waiting for the Late Show before I tried converting to SHN to see if I could get them onto 2 disks... But if there's going to be a similar response, it makes sense to keep them all together, I suppose. Whatever everyone agrees to... [Zappa-List] Please vote again - New poll for Zappa-List
Yes I had originally intended to do it that way. So I just went back and edited the poll. The thing is that it erased any votes that might have been cast. I didn’t look first so I have no idea if anyone had voted yet. Please vote again. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Zappa-List/polls I wasn’t trying to adopt a particular format so much as just get a feel for what everyone likes. I seem to recall a fair amount of resistance to the idea of flac or shn back when the MITB vine was new. Well yes that’s also true for Burnatonce users. It still converts them to wav but it’s an unseen temporary process and then the wav files are deleted after the CD burn. Anyway it looks like 90 percent like them or like both so that answers my question. [Zappa-List] King Biscuit '77 show. (Not a vine offer) (yet)
I had someone send me some CDs that he made from reel to reel tapes. He ripped them just fine but didn’t want to try splitting them into tracks and so sent them to me so that I could do it. They seem to mostly be FM broadcasts of The King Biscuit Flower Hour ranging from 70s to 80s. Anyway among them is a Zappa 1977-10-31 show. I think it was the first Halloween show or at least I thought I heard FZ say something to that effect when talking to the crowed. I never had this show before so I’m wondering if anyone else has heard other sources for it? This copy sounds pretty good but then I really haven’t listened to it all yet. Also It crossed my mind that it might have been used in an official release that I didn’t know about? Any information appreciated. RE: [Zappa-List] VO Felt Forum Halloween '76 - update
I trust your ears. My philosophy with audience recordings is that there is almost always room for improvement. I’m listening to the 30th show now and it sounds decent for an AUD. Good strong bass (maybe a little too strong in places) and crisp highs. Claims not to have been doctored so I guess it was good equipment. I can dick around with it, but I'm hesitant. It'd take me a little while to complete, for starters. Should I let it go as is, when I receive the 30th disks from JimL, and let the vine recipients do their own editing? I'd be interested in hearing what the 'q' has to say... RE: [Zappa-List] VO Felt Forum Halloween '76 - update
Well a turds a turd I guess. I think Michael was referring to my question about the ’77 31st show though. Unless he was confusing the two. Ether way a vine with 2 good shows and 1 turd is still a pretty good vine. Completests might even want the turd. I think I’m spoiled from so many great sound board recordings. Ever sense I heard that practically every show had a sound board recording made I’ve been collecting them almost exclusively. I don’t know where they all come from but there have been a lot lately. Perhaps the ZTF will see fit to let them all out someday soon. The early show from the 31st sounds pretty fair - no complaints from me, anyway. The late show, however, is a turd. I can tweak the sound, I can correct the speed, but there's no way to eliminate the taper's asshole friends who do NOT shut up the entire show. And it's grating - well, to me, it's way more than grating... Nevermind; I've made the decision to pass this show along as is. Even polished to a see-yourself sheen, there's just no disguising that this show is a turd... And I've yet to hear FZ introduce himself as Cher Allman - something I find hysterical, and am listening for intently. Got a couple more tracks to "proof" before the package is ready... I'm afraid I was responsible for that miss labeling. The MTV version is of course the MTV version and when I originally got it well it was said to be from the late show. It might be only from the late show I don't really know for sure but it was a live broadcast I think so probably was. TTNS turned out to be a mixture of both late and early. [Zappa-List] all new members (please read)
I’ve noticed some people asking to be added to vines lately. While everyone is eligible to participate in the vines and asking nicely is always a good thing, the actual act of being added needs to be done by you. You find the most recent email with the vine order list and add yourself on at the end. Here is an example of the proper way to do it. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Zappa-List/message/12135 The complete procedure is outlined in the FAQ located here. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Zappa-List/files/ The only thing not covered in the original FAQ is the new process called Hopination (I think). It is a process that speeds up vines by rearranging the order to avoid hoping across the pond so many times. This means that if the vine starts in the UK it will go to all the UK addresses first and then on to Europe and finally over the pond to north and South America. Australia well I’m not sure how we deal with Australia. Then if it’s a long lived vine and others from the UK/Europe sign on then others from the US it should again be hopinated so that all US addresses get it before going back across the pond. If a vine starts in the US the process is reversed. Simple. Jim L For further Z-related fun, please visit http://www.thebignote.com or http://www.killuglyradio.com , thank you. The thing is that I'm not so sure that the vine posts are detracting from discussion posts. If we had a discussion only list with no vine posts there might be no increase in discussion. It might just be a list with very few posts at all. Also music is the best and live FZ sound board recordings are priceless. They are worthy of discussion themselves. As far as wasted space I think yahoo provides unlimited space for posts. If it's space in your inbox the delete feature is easy to utilize and messages can always be accessed on the yahoo site. RE: [Zappa-List] Re: A suggestion: why not create a separate Vine sub-list?
Ok how about this idea? We regularly preface vine offer posts with VO. How would it work if we started prefacing discussion posts with "DIS". This would serve a duel purpose. For one thing it's important to keep the vine order in the vine posts and so discussion with the same subject line as a vine makes it harder to look back and find where to add ones self. The other thing is that it would make it easier for someone to quickly pick the discussion topics out of the hay stack of vine topics. When starting a vine one could even make a "VO" post and a "DIS" post about the show if so inclined. Or if someone just wanted to discuses something in particular "DIS" could be used to preface such a post so that it would stick out more. For those that are familiar with mail sorting rules you can even set your mail client to deliver mail with DIS into a separate folder. But we gotta think about the young ones that might come and stir things up again! (Hey, the Dub Room Special DVD is sold here in Canada at Wal-Mart: a modern day miracle!!) I don't want to sound like the Inquisition or something here... But if you created a separate list, no reason at all to keep a tight isolation between both. RE: [Zappa-List] Need Help in Converting Video to DVD
I use the software that came with my capture card. It makes nice mpeg2 files that I author with TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA). TDA is way better than Nero for authoring DVD because it doesnt re encode or re render the original mpeg files. It comes with a free 30 day trial if you want to try it. http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/download/tda16.html What kind of capture card are you using? As for PAL to NTSC conversion I recommend against it. For much less money than it costs for software that does a good job of it you can buy a player that will play PAL. About $30 at Walmart. There's even a chance that the player you have now can do it. Many players come set to output PAL when playing a PAL disc but an adjustment in the setup screen can tell them to output NTSC regardless of the disc's format. I'm curious to know what programs you guys use to capture and burn. Are there any settings that I should pay attention to? Is it possible to capture from a VHS and burn to a DVD without any degeneration like you get with VHS to VHS? Lastly, how do you convert a PAL DVD to NTSC DVD? I used Nero and it didn't work right - the converted DVD looked terrible and jumped around when I played it on the DVD player. I haven't been impressed with Nero so far...so how you do all do it? RE: [Zappa-List] DVD Audio to CD - How to?
Audacity is another free program that can be used to down sample the wav file. For splitting the wav after dawn sampling CD WAV is always my choice. It splits on sector boundaries so that you never get a click or pop on the final CD after you burn it. It’s not technically free but has an unlimited free trial period. [Zappa-List] RE: Please wait VO - Zappa Halloween QuAUDIOPHILIAc DVD audio discs burned to CD Audio
Fellow Zappa fans please conceder this before lunching this vine. While I fully understand everyone’s wish to share these fine works we are crossing a line here. These are not bootleg recordings but official releases and there not even that old. The fact that they were released on DVD Audio instead of CD Audio doesn’t mean that we can avoid getting in trouble for having a vine of them. Might I suggest that everyone interested contact each other off list with this one? It’s a line I don’t want to cross myself and this email list is in the public domain. On the other hand if someone already owns the DVD then in my mind supplying a CD version should be alright. I’m not so sure that the ZTF or the RIAA see it that way even if they should however. Yes and it’s extremely well seeded just now for maximum download speed. Thanks for the tip SOFA. This one is of course another audience recording. Probably too much to hope for a soundboard recording of this tour but one never knows. The first one sounded good for an audience although there is a bit more room ambiance than I like. I’ll have this one in about an hour to compare. RE: [Zappa-List] Linkd to some 5.1 mixes of FZ's stuff
Well actually SOFA said he’d prefer we didn’t even post dime links. Torrentbox is of course a good place for illegal file sharing of official releases. Most are OOP but still were official at one time. demonoid.com is another tracker with lax rules for anyone interested. A technical word of caution though. The Bittorrent protocol was not invented for illegal file sharing and so doesn’t hide your identity at all. If the RIAA decides to get nasty about it and go after users they can easily see what your doing. The one possible exception to this is utorrent software with encryption enabled. My understanding of copyright is that anybody can cover anybody else's songs as long as the proper royalties are paid, where applicable. This was further expanded back in the eighties when 2 Live Crew appropriated "Born In The USA" as a theme for one of their raps, where it was decided that even in a parody one doesn't need to get prior permission to use the composed tune. Just think of the hundreds of Beatles covers out there. In no way was there any quality control exercised by the copyright holders. They just wanted to be assured that if that treacly version of "Let It Be" was released, they would be paid their cut. Sampling, however, gets a bit more expensive and does need prior permission before release unless it's under the radar, like the new Girl Talk album on Illegal Arts, which is some kind of wack. Glad your enjoying it Dwayne. I picked that one to upload to dime yesterday because it stood out in my memory as probably the best sounding show I ever downloaded. I was trying to upload the 100,000th torrent and got 100,001 instead. To answer your questions. 1. Yes although it seems that a re ripped from CD copy has been on Zappateers instead of these original files. We did have a vine of this excellent show here almost 2 years ago. 2. I don’t really know for sure but someone will. 3. http://www.fzdb.de/ There are others and this one has the second digital generation of this show rather than this original rip from tape version. So this may be more rare than I thought.
