Tom,

I am using the Heil ProSet Plus with the Delta-44 card.

I found that it does need a pre-amp. Otherwise, the mic gain has to be
set too high I get some instability. I use an NCS Multi-Switcher to
switch the headset between my SDR my FT-847. The Multi-Switcher
includes a pre-amp for leveling the audio between different audio
sources.

I use the Heil Yaesu adapter cable, plugged into the Multi-Switcher
the Multi-Switcher is plugged into the front panel connector on the SDR.

Hello,

This is the second email I am trying to send. I am not sure if it is

If this works, I would like to know what is a good choice of speakers to

purchase for the up coming 5000?

Also in the last email I had asked if anyone knows of a way to stretch
the PowerSDR screen to fit a 22 inch monitor?

I did not get any replies, so I thought maybe my emails are not getting

Thank you.

Re: [Flexradio] MC-60 mic

2007-06-06 Thread Tim Ellison
Just a point of clarification since there has been a bit of discussion
about using different mics on the reflector lately. The SDR-1000 does
not have any electronics that makes any difference to what mic you use.
The mic connector is a pass thru to the sound card.

So, when you talk about connecting a mic to the SDR-1000, you really
need to qualify that with what sound card you are connecting to because
it makes, IMHO, a big difference. (Others have and will disagree with
that statement)

For Tom's request below, if he is using a Delta 44 (no mic preamp) I
would expect he would get very good results since the D44 works best
(IMHO) with a preamp although one is not necessary since PowerSDR has a
lot of gain you can add to make up for the lack of a preamp.

For the Firebox and FA-66, my concern would be over driving the
soundcard since these sound cards have preamps built in. You can turn
the gain down on them, but if the MC-60 preamp is fairly hot you can
still have potential issues of having too much gain going into PowerSDR.

Some people like getting the gain needed to drive PowerSDR from external
sources and some are fine with the gain added by PowerSDR. No matter
where it comes from the key point is to not over drive the audio chain
in PowerSDR so that the ALC kicks in.

How will this translate to the FLEX-5000? Until there are some to work
with (shipping later this month) we will not know for sure, but I
suspect that the FLEX-5000 will be similar to using a Delta 44 sound
card, where if you want to use an outboard preamp through the balanced
line-in TRS connector (line level, not mic level), that will work very
well and so will connecting a standard ham radio mic through the 8-pin
foster connector, but you may need more mic gain added via PowerSDR to
drive the rig to full power (0 dB peaks on the MIC meter).

Re: [Flexradio] 6 meters

2007-06-10 Thread Tim Ellison
I think you are going to need one of the TE Systems amps that only take
100-500 mW of drive to put out 170 and 80 watts respectively; the 0548G
or the 0505G models.

I also believe that you have to use the QRP output (BNC) rather than the
one from the PA since the PA filters might attenuate 50 MHz. You will
need to remove the 50 ohm load from the QRP output if you are working
HF, so a switch will be desirable. A duplexer would not be necessary in
this case.

No one answered this yesterday Seeing the RF out of the SDR1K is the
same for 6 and HF, one would need a duplexer to operate on 6. Or,
seeing I am driving an Amp, perhaps it would be better to use a rotary
switch to go from the output to the appropriate load, amp or 6 meter
stuff. I know this is simple stuff but want to make sure I do it right.

Does anyone know if 500mW will drive a solid state amp that requires 10
watts max for 170 w. I know the power would be reduced but even 80 or so
is OK on 6. I sure there are some 6 meter guys out there.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Flexradio] Print Operating Manual

2007-06-11 Thread Tim Ellison
Get a cheap printer and a pack of paper.

Printer = ~$45.00 (HP DJ2460 @ Circuit City)
Paper = $5.00 (500 sheet count)

IMHO, since the manual (as with the software) is continuously changing,
unless it is absolutely necessary, printing might be a waste of
resources.

Re: [Flexradio] question for a Flexarian

2007-06-11 Thread Tim Ellison
Because you can define the transmit filter width (high and low cut
points) based on the TX Profile being used separately from the RX filter
settings. It is described on page 97 in the 1.8.0 Operations manual.

You can also change the RX filters in the same way. It is described on
page 45 in the 1.8.0 Operations manual.

Can't find this in manual or KB.

When operating DIGL or U. and I select the 2.4 filter, I get a green
band that basically covers 2.4 kc. Likewise for all the other preset
receive filters.
This I understand.
But
The two yellow transmit passband edge lines don't coincide.

The transmit filter width is obviously different I know...but...why
doesn't at least one edge of the transmit width be the same as the edge
of the receive filter?

I'm just assumed the offset would be the same for receive as xmit.
Or am I confusing apples and orangesagain?

There are so many possibilities, it almost makes you want to get the

Many thanks Tim. The KB is first rate.

Yes, the active application or the one in focus is the active program
that these HIDs (human interface devices) manipulate. I have sent a
feature request in for the Griffin PowerMate to allow the device to
control a specific program it is associated with regardless if it is in
focus or not. That was over a year ago and as you see, there have been
no updates with this feature, so I stopped holding my breath :-)

Re: [Flexradio] Griffin Tuning Knob

2007-06-12 Thread Tim Ellison
Here is a repost of Sami's e-mail talking about HotWheel:

I have written this small program that is becoming almost useful.
HotWheel enables you to capture mouse wheel and selected keyboard
events and send them to any application even when its window doesn't
have focus (it's in the background or minimized).

As an example I have created a simple HotWheel configuration for
PowerSDR. Most keyboards have a little-used key called Scroll Lock and
a corresponding LED indicator. In this example, event capture is
disabled when Scroll Lock is off. When Scroll Lock is on, the
following events will be sent to PowerSDR:
- mouse wheel roll and click
- ctrl+arrow keys (up/down=tuning, left/right=sets tuning step)
- NumPad 9/3 = Band Up/Down
- NumPad 8/2 = Filter Up/Down
- NumPad 7/1 = Mode Up/Down

The active top window will receive all other mouse and keyboard input,
so you can work normally with that application, and simultaneously
have some limited control over SDR-1000 without activating the
PowerSDR window.

Note 1: Using the NumPad keys usually requires that Num Lock is on as
well.
Note 2: The Band/Filter/Mode controls are mapped to keys M/N/B/V/X/Z
(PowerSDR default settings). If you have changed these in PowerSDR
Setup, the HotWheel configuration file has to be modified accordingly.

If you want to give it a try, you can download the HotWheel program
and configuration files using the link below. Written and tested on
Windows XP Pro (SP2), but should work with Win2k and later. Please
note that this is experimental software: USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!
http://kotisivu.dnainternet.net/ahti/sdr-1000/HotWheel.zip

Unzip the files into some directory and run the .exe file. A small
window will open and then disappear after a couple of seconds.
HotWheel is now running in the background consuming only minimal
system resources. Simply run the .exe file again if you want to
terminate the process.

I will not be describing the configuration file syntax here, because
it may change in future versions. And those with a little programming
experience can probably figure it out on their own! Most importantly,
you will need a list of Windows virtual key codes.

The short answer is yes (PowerSDR has to be focused in order to handle
keyboard events). The longer answer is that there are workarounds
including
a tool that our own Sami OH2BFO wrote that can work around this (search
for
HotWheel).

Re: [Flexradio] Enhancements in SVN's

2007-06-14 Thread Tim Ellison
Dave,

All code downloaded from SVN is alpha and or beta code. It is by
definition in flux. The feature list will not be published until the
code becomes a real release.

In the mean time, the only way to determine what is changing it to
review the SVN log on a per entry basis to review the developer's notes.

95% of the changes in the SDR-X branch are for the FLEX-5000. Some of
the changes (DSP improvements) are applicable to both.

The safest code for SDR-1000 users is the changes in the SVN trunk (not
a branch) for PowerSDR 1.9.0 rather than the SDR-1X branch.

Nope. Several months ago we removed any restrictions on content that

In the future (new version of KB software coming out in the next month

Re: [Flexradio] Noise Floor S meter vs Panadapter

2007-06-14 Thread Tim Ellison
Do you have averaging turned on with the Panadapter? The S meter will
display the highest value it sees for the samples (bins) it is
analyzing. Within that sample of data it is analyzing, there are noise
peaks that correspond to the higher value you are seeing (-117 dB rather
than the -145 dB). I use the average of the noise floor, or what the
Panadapter shows when averaging is on to determine what the noise floor
is.

I recently build the Elecraft kit to provide a reference signal for
calibration of my SDR1000. With the 50 uV reference my S meter shows
-73 dBm (S 9.0). At 1 uV reference, the meter shows -107 dBm ( S
3.3). These two numbers show the S meter is perfectly calibrated.

When I remove the Elecraft unit and no antenna is connected, the meter
shows a noise floor of -117 dBm (S1.3). But the panadapter shows
-145 dB. I wonder why the panadapter does not agree with the S meter.
Maybe I am should ground the antenna connector when measuring noise
floor? When people ask me about the noise floor, do I say -117 or
-145?

I have always suspected my 5 year-old Dell 1.8 Ghz has high internal
noise possibly on the PCI bus. Perhaps this Dell system noise is
getting into my M44 sound card. I hope to have a new dual-core Intel
computer later this week.

Subject: [Flexradio] New computer for the 5000

After talking with Eric at Dayton I decided to build a new computer in
preparation for my 5000A. I was using an older 2.0 GHz Dell. I found
a
new case made by Apevia (X-Qpack2-NW-BK/500) that is similar in size
to
the 5000. It is a cube that is about the same height as the 5000 and
about 2 wider. I think it will look very nice along side the 5000.
 This
case comes with a 500 watt PS and seems to be RF quiet. This case is
designed for the micro ATX board. After consulting with Eric, I
 decided
on the E6600 Core 2 Dual processor on an Intel DG965OT motherboard
 using
the G965 chip set and 2 Gig memory. This chip set has onboard video,
fire wire ports, Ethernet port, serial port, parallel port, sound
 card,
and a ton of USB ports. It is working very well with my SDR-1000. The
onboard video works very well but I decided to upgrade it to a 6800
video card for dual monitor support. I also equipped it with an
inexpensive SATA 320G hard drive and DVD burner. The stock case fans
create about the same noise level as the SDR-1000. I changed them out
for little better fans, expecting the noise level to be down around
the
 level of the new 5000.

The CPU loafs along at 8% with PowerSDR SVN 1210. I'm using the
FA-66
sound card at 192K. There is absolutely no popping at all.

I purchased everything for about $700 from Newegg and spent a day
putting it together and loading software.

This was the first computer I've put together in 20 years and it was a
 fun project.

The Intel is very specific on the memory chips so I choose from the
 recommended list.

The issue with Vista is not PowerSDR, but the drivers needed to
interface to the external hardware (sound cards and Firewire

FLEX-5000 PowerSDR 1.10.0 first and then with the SDR-1000

I'm thinking of upgrading my PC and have been looking around lately at

My preference would be to stay with XP but I noted that many of the
offerings I looked at on various PC vendor web sites only offer Vista.
It would seem that Flex will soon need to address this as XP becomes
increasingly hard to obtain. However, it seems that the remaining
problems are not that difficult to solve and, no doubt Vista will be
blessed in the near future.

Of course Linux and Mac could also be in my future! So many Operating
Systems, so little time!

Sounds like a nice machine - and the price is good too!

What OS are you using - XP or Vista?

Are there still reasons (specific to running PowerSDR) for NOT using
Vista or is Vista officially blessed by Flex now?

Subject: [Flexradio] New computer for the 5000

After talking with Eric at Dayton I decided to build a new computer
 in
preparation for my 5000A. I was using an older 2.0 GHz Dell. I
found
 a
new case made by Apevia (X-Qpack2-NW-BK/500) that is similar in size
 to
The stock case
fans
create about the same noise level as the SDR-1000. I changed them
out
for little better fans, expecting the noise level to be down around
 the
  level of the new 5000.

The CPU loafs along at 8% with PowerSDR SVN 1210. I'm using the
 FA-66
sound card at 192K. There is absolutely no popping at all.

I purchased everything for about $700 from Newegg and spent a day
putting it together and loading software.

This was the first computer I've put together in 20 years and it was
 a
  fun project.

The Intel is very specific on the memory chips so I choose from the
  recommended list.

Re: [Flexradio] am I the only person to do this?

2007-06-16 Thread Tim Ellison
I believe the assumption here is that if you were bright enough to pass
a General class ham radio license you can master turning on the power
:-)

We have all done it. Me included. The incredibly low noise floor on
the Panadapter is what gives it away for me. I have just gotten into
the habit of leaving it turned on. It has better frequency stability
that way since it is already warmed up. To offset the extra cost on the
power bill, I switched to those fancy mercury vapor bulbs that use very
little amperage and last for 10 years. It will take that long for them
to pay for themselves :-)

The problem is that the FLEX-5000 has to be on to control it since the
control cable is Firewire. When the power is off, the device (radio)
does not exist as far as Windows is concerned.

There are other (and better) ways to turn power on and off remotely
using TCP/IP

[Flexradio] [OT] LNA VHF preamps

2007-06-16 Thread Tim Ellison
I am looking for some advice on LNA VHF preamps from the VHF+ gurus that
subscribe to the list. I am not an EE nor do I even try to play one on
TV and I certainly didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, so I
am looking for some education on this subject.

I have been looking at several LNA designs (specifically for 6m) and it
seems that they come in several flavors.

1.) dual gate MOS FETs

2.) GaAs FETs

3.) bipolar transistors

One mfg. claims that the new very low noise dual gate MOS FETs have a
better noise figure than the GaAs FETs. I have always heard that the
GaAs FETs were the way to go for the best noise figure, so I am confused
from the marketing hype.

I am looking to get a non-mast mounted preamp for 6 meters. I have a
few transceivers that cover 6 meters, but are not the best for weak
signal work and need a little help. This could be a receive only device,
as that would be it's initial function, but I am not excluding mast
mounted ones either.

If anyone want to make a recommendation for a particular mfg. or kit,
that would be appreciated too.

will not install. AND any attempt to re-install 3.12 also fails. The

Anybody got a suggestion. I have emailed NTONYX support but

Is there an estimate when the optional independent high

(I would like to have it shipped at the same time if possible

to save on postage to Europe)

On the antenna tuner I read 2 different stories:

Internal Unbalanced 160 to 6 meter Automatic Tuning Unit (ATU)

This product is not yet available.

Additional information for this upgrade will be forthcoming.

Or should it read only available installed in the 5000A (for now)

Re: [Flexradio] some info about Mic

2007-06-21 Thread Tim Ellison
The B1 is a 48v condenser mic. The EQplus does not provide the 48 VDC
necessary to operate the mic.

Elan,

The B1 is a +48 VDC condenser mic and the EQplus does not provide the
necessary voltage to run the mic. You will need to add the voltage
in-line to get it to work.

Any balanced microphone (Heil, Shure, AT, etc...) will work file. A
condenser mic that only needs +5 VDC, like the iCM from Heil will work
well too.

Always check the KB for the answers to your questions. There is a lot
of good info; you just need to do a simple key work search. My search
returned several Knowledge Base articles about different mics you can
review.

Re: [Flexradio] key pad knob like this one

2007-06-25 Thread Tim Ellison
No Mark. Fortunately you were very lucid at the time :-)

The FLEX-5000 uses the MIDI control protocol to manipulate hardware
controls in the radio. The hooks part of the code is not exposed
fully yet, so there isn't an easy way to do this now. I could see where
someone could create a FlexWire device that would allow one to create a
external interface to possibly control the hardware in order to make a
widget with knobs, but since the FlexWire specifications are not yet
published, this is only conjuncture on my part.

Some time ago I thought I saw mention that one would be able to use MIDI
to interface external knobs/controllers to the radio. Was I
hallucinating, or did I really read this somewhere? If so, I assume
that there must be some hooks in PowerSDR for receiving MIDI, any info
on how to connect MIDI to PowerSDR?

 John,

Here is a copy of a note I just sent to Jim Lux

Jim,

Of all the really good ideas you've expressed in the couple of months
that I've been reading the reflector, the concept of creating a (easily
detachable?) front Button/Knob panel for the 5000 is absolutely the
best!
You see, if I tell visitors to the shack that I've got one of the most
advanced radios available and all they see is a switch, no one will pay
any attention to my claims. BUT. And I do have a really good
collections of buttons and knobs, including the Classic National Radio
knob!

Thanks, loads!

We currently carry two external knobs. About 30 percent of our
 customers
buy
one of the two controllers with knobs. Eighty percent of them report
that after a week or so, they no longer need the knob because a mouse
is sufficient. Having said that, we are continuously evaluating
different devices for those slaved to traditional methods of tuning
 and controlling
a
radio. Some habits are just hard to break.

Subject: [Flexradio] Help-TX calibration problem

I have run into a problem with the TX output level on 160M and 80M. My
SDR-1000 is putting out up to 4 times more power on these two bands than
all the other bands. In other words, with the Drive level and Tune level
set at 20 the rig puts out approximately 20 watts on all bands except 80
and 160. On these bands it puts out 65 watts with the same setting. This
is causing a lot of problems with my linear.

This is happening with both 1.8.0 and 1.9.0 SVN 1210. I have run the PA
Settings Calibration several times on both versions into a high quality
50 ohm dummy load with a good cable. The calibration routine returns
gain settings that are close to Flexradio original test results except
on 80 and 160.

Any ideas on what is causing this???

It depends on your version of PowerSDR you are using. I am using one of
the latest alpha versions from SVN and with this version all DIGIx modes
keep the microphone muted. But, with the new version you can use SSB
mode and the mic will be available and use VAC at the same time.

The newer version *enables* the use of VAC with SSB. You must make sure

Does anybody else have problems with the adapter frequently
dropping-out in the electronic sense. Sometimes this happens when I'm

pain.

I suspect that part of the problem is that I am using other USB-serial
adapters (for the PTT in JT65, and for a GPS receiver used to lock the
computer clock) and of course USB is used to connect the printer, mouse,

Re: [Flexradio] Good motherboards???

2007-07-03 Thread Tim Ellison
I have used both AMD Athlon 64 X2 and the Intel Core 2 Duo ships in the
past few months. Both have their advantages and disadvantage. I found
that the Athlon 64 chips seemed to have a bit of a problem with Windows
and core context switching. Using a real OS (*nix) this issue was
nonexistent. There were several hacks that seemed to help. I have no
actual experience with the new Turions or Opterons so I can't say if
this condition has been corrected or not. If I was to get an AMD
processor today, I would use an ATI graphics processor since the AMD 690
ship set is optimized for that family of GPUs

I currently run a Core 2 Duo E6600on a ASUS mobo with the NVIDIA chip
set and NVIDIA graphics processor. It is a screamer. The Intel chip
sets are probably a bit more robust, but tend to be more conservative in
the performance arena.

The chip race is alive and well between the Intel and AMD (which is
great for the customer) as they go core crazy. IMHO, it comes down to
cost (who really needs to pay the big $$ for a 48 core chip???), the
amount of L2 cache on the processor and the mobo chip set when all other
things are equal.

Now, I really need to stress the point that the difference I note above
are s miniscule that you will never notice them. They are
really insignificant when it comes to running PowerSDR. Either are a
good choice.

BTW, do not worry about heat dissipation. Big fans are cheap. As far
as EMI suppression, get a very good case with lots of steel (heavy) and
no plastic see thru sides. I favor Antec in this arena.

I am ready to upgrade my system to a dual core processor. I have been
attracted to Asus based on some comments I've seen on this reflector. I
don't know whether to go with an Intel or AMD processor. I am inclined
to go for the Intel because someone said the Intel's run cooler than the
AMD's and use less power. In fact the Intel Core 2 Duo is supposed to
use less power than my Pentium processor. I also wonder if less power
consumption also translates to less EMI/RFI. Are the power consumption
differences true? My source is a salesman.

The Asus motherboards I am looking at are P5B and the P5N-E. These are
for Intel processors. My main use is going to be the SDR-1000 and soon
the FLEX-5000A.

I welcome any comments pro or con.

Subject: [Flexradio] Weekly update on the FLEX-5000 and PowerSDR
Date: Tue, 3 Jul 2007 18:13:16 -0500

Dear FlexRadio customers,

For the past 5 months, we have been hard at work enhancing PowerSDR to
be compatible with the FLEX-5000. Today marks another milestone in
that path of progress as we release PowerSDR Beta v1.9.1. This version

includes all of the enhancements we have been working on in the SVN
SDR-X branch. A large majority of our customers are already using the
open SVN version but we want to make it now generally available through
website download.

Here are just a few of the major changes that benefit SDR-1000 owners
as a direct result of FLEX-5000 development:

- Full Duplex DSP - We now have completely separated the RX and TX
audio and control paths through the DSP. This immediately impacts T/R
transition times and thus dramatically improves CW performance on the
SDR-1000. Huge kudos to Bob McGwier, N4HY, and Frank Brickle, AB2KT,
for their continued improvements to the DSP.

- Improved Calibration - Due to work on calibration routines for the
FLEX-5000, we now have faster calibration and the ability to calibrate
per band.

- Enhanced Digital Mode Experience - Much work has been done to
improve the digital mode experience including work on the VAC
interface, DRM Transmit, and CAT interfacing to various third party
programs (thanks to Bob Tracy, K5KDN).

- Support of Janus/Ozy combination - Thanks to Bill Tracey, KD5TFD, we

have initial support of the HPSDR Janus/Ozy sound card for use with the

SDR-1000.

As we collect these 400+ updates from the SDR-X branch, we will be
returning active development to the trunk. This means that you may see

errors updating your SDR-X branch. You can use the SVN-Switch command

with the URL below to update your folders to pull the new files from
the right place.
We will tag the last revision of the old trunk before replacing the
trunk with the existing SDR-X branch.

Binaries Only SVN URL:
svn://206.216.146.154/svn/repos_sdr_windows/PowerSDR/trunk/bin/Release

As always, we would not be able to do this without the continued
support of our volunteer developers, testers, and good ideas from the
Flexer community.
Keep up the excellent work. We are excited about the continued
potential for improvement in the truly SOFTware Defined Radio arena.

Food for thought: Do you know of other radios that received continued
feature and performance improvements after the radio is no longer
produced?

FLEX-5000 production update:

The first article of the corrected back panel for the FLEX-5000 was
approved this week. The first article of corrected silk screening will

be reviewed on 7/6. We are still on track to begin shipments on or
before
7/25
as stated in last week's report.

Our FLEX-5000 Beta testers are making lots of on air contacts with the
new radio. Also, John (W5GI), has been announcing on air time with on
this reflector so watch for times and frequencies.

Re: [Flexradio] SDR1000 and SDR-X in CW mode

2007-07-04 Thread Tim Ellison
Chris,

I do not believe you have gone wrong. You have experienced a result of merging
two different sets of PowerSDR code and some problems like you described will
occasionally crop up.

That is exactly why this code is now beta - to get more users experience with
the code and to find these problems.

This is a reminder to all people using PowerSDR 1.9.1 Beta and any subsequent
SVN releases in the PowerSDR trunk to PLEASE enter these problems into the bug
tracker. This is the only 100% way to make sure your issues you are
experiencing get addresses quickly. Posting your experiences on the reflector
for beta software is a good way to get feedback from other users and it is
encouraged, but you still need to enter your problem into the bug tracker to
complete the process. Bug tracker URL:
http://support.flex-radio.com/BugList.aspx?it=b

As another reminder, when submitting a bug report, please be as detailed as
possible and describe your setup, especially your sound card and anything
different you may have done to it, such as adding isolation transformers to the
I/Q audio lines. If you know how to reproduce the problem, please describe how
you can do that. If you know how to make it worse or better, add that info
too. And last but not lease provide a little bit of information about your
computer, such as the CPU type and speed.

Chris has done an exceptional job of providing that information below.

Hi

I have been running SDR1000 for two years now. The latest software I use with
success is PowerSDR 1.9.0 SVN 1261.

I have never been able to use PowerSDR-X. I have trouble in CW mode. It seems
to me that when I hit the DASH paddle it will very often start with a DIT.

I tried the latest version PowerSDR 1.9.1 SVN1315 but have the same problem.

Now that there is only PowerSDR 1.9.1 version I am getting worried about the CW
mode with SDR1000

I always start with a new database and have the same set up as the in SVN 1261.

Intel Pentium D840 dual core 3.2 GHz

Edirol FA-66

Can anyone tell me, where do I go wrong?

Re: [Flexradio] Edirol FA66 Problem

2007-07-05 Thread Tim Ellison
Make sure that you are not using SpeedStep with the laptop that ramps
down processor speed to save power and generate less heat.

Also, laptops are not equal to desktops in performance with the same
CPU being used. Laptops cut corners to get the longest battery life at
the expense of high performance. You may have just hit the limit using
the FA-66 ASIO driver @ 192K. You may need much larger hardware (FA-66)
buffers. What are your buffer settings?

BTW, the D44 soundcard uses only PCI the bus, which is more efficient
than the Firewire / PCI bus combination for the FA-66. If you are using
a mobo Firewire host controller, some of the mobo implementations of
these chip sets are taxing on the system too since they share interrupts
with other system devices. A PCI-E connected device usually has the bus
interrupt to itself and does not share with other devices.

I recently purchased an Edirol FA66 and I'm having a trouble when using
192 KHz. Everything works fine on 96 KHz, but on 192 KHz the CPU usage
is pegged out a 100% and the system locks up. It does the same thing on
two different computers on two separate SDR-1000's Here are my specific
details.

Computer 1 - Compaq EVO N610 Notebook, Intel Pentium 4, 2 GHz processor
with
1 Gb RAM. Normal CPU usage on 96 KHz is approximately 35% (Same average
CPU usage with standard sound card, Presonus Firebox, used on this
system)

Computer 2 - Dell Optiplex Intel Pentium 4, 2 GHz processor with 1 Gb
RAM.
Normal CPU usage on 96 KHz is 30% (Same average CPU usage with the
standard sound card, Delta 44, used on this system)

Both system use Windows XP.

When switching to 192 KHz with the Edirol, the CPU usage ramps up to
100% in about 2-3 seconds and stays locked up there. I have been through
all of the optimization routines that are recommended; I have been
through the Edirol setup numerous times to make sure I haven't
overlooked something, but still have the problem.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. There is no mention whatsoever
on the Flex-radio web site that a computer of this speed won't work with
the Edirol, so I'm assuming I'm just not doing something right in the
setup (yes, I am switching the Edirol and SDR-1000 to 192 KHz
correctly).

Suggestions?

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000a flexwire plug

2007-07-08 Thread Tim Ellison
Neil, your prediction will, unfortunately probably come true.

Your concern was debated before the FlexWire physical connector was
selected. In the end, the decision was made to use a 9-pin d-sub
connector (that is used for serial connections, but not exclusively),
but orient the connector upside down from a standard serial
implementation and provide a warning label to prevent incorrect usage.
So the back panel is CLEARLY labeled not to connect a serial cable to
the FlexWire port. Hopefully this will be a sufficient deterrent.

Also, blocking the holes in the d-sub connector would work, but if you
wanted to build a FlexWire device, then you have to find a special d-sub
male plug that has the correct pins missing. That would be an impediment
for people wanting to innovate by building FlexWire devices.

I can already predict a lot of people will be plugging serial port
cables
into the db 9 female port on the 5000a. Do you need all 9 signals on the
port? If not, why not put a stop in one of the holes so an OEM male db9
will
not fit? I assume that we will be buying devices that include the cable
and
they can just snip off whatever signal you block on the plug.

Otherwise, will there be any damage if we accidently connect a computer
to
the flex wire port? If you have engineered it so there wil be no damage,
then the need for enforced vigilance decreases dramatically.

Re: [Flexradio] New SoftWare New Manual

2007-07-08 Thread Tim Ellison
Bruce wrote:

Not yet. The manual for release 1.10.0 (which is what 1.9.1 beta will
turn in to) is currently being written and not yet available. It will
be available soon after the FLEX-5000 begins shipping later this month.

There were significant re-writes to support the FLEX-5000 and the 1.9.1
release is not feature complete. There will initially be the FLEX-5000
Complete Owner's Guide followed shortly there after by the SDR-1000
Complete Owner's guide. The decision to make two documents was due to
the difference in the hardware and the PowerSDR features that hardware
supports.

For the time being, you can review the SVN release log to see what
changes have transpired during the development after 1.8.0 was released.

The manual notch filter is important.

All of the programming effort for the past few months has been towards
getting the FLEX-5000 working with PowerSDR and not on providing new
features. Enhancements and new features will get put back on the
programming to do list once support for the FLEX-5000 is complete.

But this is one of the few good enhancement requests that has not been

I assume there must be programming issues that make a manual notch very

How about a click, drag and set filter in addition to a fixed width
notch filter? Place the crosshairs on one side of the offending signal
and define the filter width by dragging dynamically created filter width
across it, nulling it out.

Re: [Flexradio] Can Shuttle Pro control radio when Power SDR window is in background?

2007-07-10 Thread Tim Ellison
Part of it is a Windoze thing. The powermate is essentially a pointing
device and it is only active on the window that is in focus.

I asked Griffin Tech. to modify their driver to associate the powermate
with a single application no matter if it was in focus or not. I
submitted a formal enhancement request - TWO YEARS AGO. I guess they
are not going to consider it.

Re: [Flexradio] New with sdr-1000

2007-07-10 Thread Tim Ellison
Ruben,

Welcome to the club!

Please use only the released version 1.8.0 of PowerSDR until you have
your system up and running successfully.

Yes, you can connect a Heil ProSet to a SDR-1000. Refer to the PowerSDR
Operations Manual for the microphone pin out. You will probably need to
make a connector.

SVN is a source code repository where the alpha and beta version of
PowerSDR are located. You need to get very comfortable with the
released version of 1.8.0 before using an alpha version. These versions
are prone to have bugs (because they are alpha versions) and are only
recommended to intermediate and advanced user (of which you will
probably be one in short order).

Please feel free to use the Knowledge Base to answer your questions
along with the reflector. Most of the newbie questions have been
asked before and there is probably a KB article on that subject. The
easiest way to use the KB is to do simple single or double word
searches.

Tim,

Would a notch like this be able to work outside of the filter passband,
but within the panadapter window? It would be great to put a wide manual
notch on an adjacent channel signal to knock down splatter. However,
this might work better (or at all) with software phasing algorithms such
as Gerald mentioned in his Dayton presentation.

like them a lot. The are also +12 VDC speakers, so I run them off of
the shack 13.8 VDC power supply to minimize ground loops.

Paul,

I'd like to second Wally's comments. I've used these for about a year
and have been exceptionally pleased with both the sound
quality (head and shoulders above the stock Harmon-Cardin speakers
that came with the computer) as well as RF immunity. I was
pleasantly surprised at the reasonable price, especially considering the
great sound.

 HI Paul,
The following speakers are the best I have ever run into for use with
the
SDR-1000. They are not susceptible to RFI like most other speakers for
the
computer that use an external wall-wart power supply. These use a built
in
120V 50-60Hz power supply.

Dave DXLab responded to me as to how to set up AFSK in WinWarbler as
follows:

Open the Config window's RTTY tab. In the Modulation and transceiver
mode panel's AFSK sub-panel, select the LSB entry, set its Xcvr Mode
selector to RTTY, set its Mark Offset to 0, and set its Optimal Offset
to 2210.

My question is do I set up PowerSDR in DIGL or DIGU?

Tim It only matters depending on the mode. Foe example, PSK31, you can use
either USB or LSB and still copy fine.

The bigger question is
what processing does PowerSDR do in these digital modes that is different
from USB or LSB in ver 1.8 (and later versions if different)

Tim DIGIx modes bypass all audio processing and turns off the mic so you do
not QRM accidentally if you select to use VAC for digital modes (in the VAC
setup). This didn't change in 1.9.1

If it moves and it isn't supposed to - duct tape it. If it doesn't move and
it is supposed to - WD-40 it. If it's hardware and you want software - FPGA

[Flexradio] KMØT Record Breaking Rainscatter QSO s with the SDR-1000!!!

2007-07-14 Thread Tim Ellison
We have just learned that Mike, KM0T has just set two new microwave distance
records for 5.7 and 10 GHz using his SDR-1000! This is a great accomplishment
for Mike and the SDR-1000! This isn't the first time Mike has used the
SDR-1000 to provide him a significant advantage in VHF+ contesting. In
addition to slaying microwave distance records, he also dominates the ARRL UHF
contest by taking 1st place for the past three years using a SDR-1000
(coincidence? I think not!)

For more details on Mike's award winning accomplishments see the Flex-Radio web
page http://www.flex-radio.com/

It is also worthwhile to visit Mike's SDR-1000 web page where he details many
of his extensive modifications to his VHF+ software defined operating position.
 http://www.km0t.com/pages/sdr.htm

Congratulations Mike!

Re: [Flexradio] Problems with system software.

2007-07-14 Thread Tim Ellison
A reformat and a reload is a bit radical.

Try building a new database first. If that doesn't resolve your
problems, the a little less radical approach can be taken.

Uninstall all instances PowerSDR using the Add or Remove Program feature
in the Control Panel. Delete the PowerSDR directories. Install 1.8.0
and do the initial soundcard configuration. Then load Beta 1.9.1 and
let it build a *new* database (do not import). The TX and RX threading
has been greatly changed in the new 1.9.1 version so a complete
reconfiguration of your hardware buffers (sound card buffer size or
latency depending on the card) and the PowerSDR audio buffers is in
order.

Also make sure you have the latest version of your video driver, all of
the .NET updates and the latest DirectX installed before starting the
PowerSDR reload.

If you have a lot of custom TX profiles, memories or a modified band
plan, copy your current database to a safe location before starting and
after you get things working, then use Ray's PowerSDR Data Import
Utility to integrate just those tables into the new database.

Hi,

When I run PowerSDR with the SDR-1000, it first sounds like a chu chu
train for about two min, then calms down. CPU 25 to 40%, XP. When I
change bands, I get an unhandled exception message which usually takes
a reboot to fix, then it will change bands for awhile then repeat the
problem.

Suggestions (other than reformat and reload)?

FYI,

I tried calling them all afternoon yesterday. Only 80% of the calls
actually resulted in the phone ringing and when it was answered, they
could not hear the caller.

I used three different networks to place the calls and the problem still
existed, so the issue is definitely on their end.

Use the web order form rather than calling.

It would be nice if there was an alternate way (e-mail) to contact them
even if it was just to let them know about there telecommunication

There are no older versions of the production FLEX-5000A radio; there

The USBIO system driver is libusb0.sys There is also a DLL that goes

The latest version of USBIO is on the Downloads page

Re: [Flexradio] Flex-5000 RX Antenna Loop Configuration question

2007-07-22 Thread Tim Ellison
It does have a lot of usable gain on 6m, and I have several 6m single
and double hop QSOs in the log using the FLEX-5000 as proof, but if you
are going to do serious weak signal work on 6m you will probably need an
external preamp like most 6m rigs.

 Zack,

You have it absolutely correct. Cool, isn't it?

I am using that configuration on a beta FLEX-5000 right now. I have
my 6m antenna on ANT2 using the RX loop. My HF antenna is on ANT1. I
use the Expert Antenna Selection setup in PowerSDR to assign this
configuration specifically for 6m. It automatically changes to use
other antenna connectors when other bands are selected.

But, you are not limited to 6m. The RX loop can tap off of any of the

three antenna ports. You define when it is used on a per band basis.
Or you can configure the RX loop for all bands. Oh the
combinations

Subject: [Flexradio] Flex-5000 RX Antenna Loop Configuration question

Am I reading this right? It looks like the Flex-5000 does not need to

use a sequencer to have a 6 metre preamp in line. So I could have my
6 metre antenna connected to one antenna port (lets say ANT 1) and my

HF antenna to ANT 2. Then I could have a non rf-switched preamp (lets

 say a DEMI 6MLNA) looped through RX-1 RX-2 for receiving 6 metres
on ANT 1.
And no external switching is required for transmitting to keep the RF

 amp from destroying the pre-amp?

 http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10400

RX Antenna Loop Configuration (RX1 IN RX1 OUT) One of the
interesting features of the FLEX-5000 is the Receive only loop. You
can configure PowerSDR to take the RX signal from ANT1 (SO-239) and
 route it to the
RX1 OUT BNC connector and back in to the transceiver using RX1 IN.
This will allow you to easily place receive only devices in-line to
the RX signal chain. Examples of such devices would be a 6m
pre-amplifier for weak signal work, a preselector for attenuating
strong out-of-band signal sources, or a wavetrap for specific
 frequency interference nulling.

Hi,

I am anxiously awaiting my Flex-5000 and want to be ready with Firewire

The Flex-Radio website says 'coming soon' for Flex-supplied Firewire
solutions, but I want to be ready when the Flex-5000 arrives and so
ideally I would like to have either:

1. the option of buying the card from Flex and having it shipped with
the Flex-5000 or

2. the Firewire card already installed in the computer when the
Flex-5000 arrives.

Is there any chance of option #1?

If not, what is the current recommendation for a good FIrewire card?
Does the February 2007 knowledgebase article

Hi:

I've had a SDR-1000 for a little over a year. Recently it has stopped
receiving signals. I can pick up a local AM broadcast station, but that

is about it. Unless the pre-amp is set to high, even this local station

is in the noise (and it should be pegging the meter). I'm certain the

receives normally. Is there something that I should check locally

The current SVN is beyond the 1.9.1 beta. The 1.9.1 beta version was
created when the code was moved from the SVN SDR-1X branch to the main
PowerSDR trunk.

All of it has been tested about the same.

You can download the beta from the main web page if you like.

Ray
I've tried your technique a number of times.
I find it very hard to do.
First thing is that the display looks like a rapidly squirming worm,
changing shape constantly around the inner most ring.

I can get it close to appearing about in the same place but it still
goes
ccw and cw slightly with modulation and still goes CCW overall.

Where as with the Panadaptor in Spectrum, DSB 16k filter, I get the
center
signal peak (carrier) as close on the Red line as my eye can see (Zoom
to
4x+)

But it still sounds off. The clock tick still sounds fuzzy, and the mans

voice sounds like it has a tad of 'ac' on it.
The numbers for the DDS are -7709, PLL 1, IF 11025
(my best WWV Sig strength is 10.000 usually +20 over, -59dBm on my
screen)

 Harry,

1.) Tune in WWV at the highest frequency where you get a good signal.
2.) Select the Phase display instead of the Panadapter.
 3.) Click on Setup/General/Hardware Config.
4.) In the DDS area, adjust the Clock Offset value until the
display
 stops rotating.

This will calibrate the frequency to a better degree of accuracy than
the
 automatic frequency calibration routine will.

Have been using the 1.9 beta software with my setup since buying the 1k.
Everything seemed to work ok for me using a P4 duo core 1.86ghz Cpu with
3gb ddr2 ram Sata Hdd 160gb and outboard Edirol FA-66 controled with the
onboard Motherboard 1394/Firewire plus parallel interface from the
computer Mb. Began adding 3rd party software for sstv (MMSSTV) and Rtty
(MMTTY) MixW (multi digi) and Hampal for Drm.. Loaded the VAC software
(ver 4.07) and installed/configured fine along with Phil's
Virtual com port software.. Problems show up when monitoring on another
tcvr to the outgoing transmissions and a small breakup of the audio at
irregular timing intervals are apparent on the received audio.. I
remember a similar thing happening when using SSTV in the old ? days
when computer interupts were a problem causing this sort of effect.
Decided to just try the older Sdr version 1.8 and loaded and imported

Re: [Flexradio] sdr 1.91 beta

2007-07-27 Thread Tim Ellison
OK folks. You need to try this simple configuration change before doing
anything radical.

I have updated the VAC install article on the KB to reflect what I am
going to summarize here.
http://kb.flex-radio.com/article.aspx?id=10218

I have found through extensive testing that there is a preferred method
for configuring VAC 4.07. This is not a perfect solution and the VAC
audio channel in PowerSDR still needs some work to minimize the ~200 ms
of delay through the channel. These optimizations will come in due
time.

In previous VAC set ups, it was recommended that the VAC sampling rate
in PowerSDR and the sound card be exactly the same. I have found that
this is not the case. I have been testing with VAC 4.07, MixW 2.18 and
the FLEX-5000 extensively over the past few weeks and this configuration
should be applicable to the SDR-1000 too. (I would have tested it, but
my SDR1K is in RX only mode).

What I have done is create two VAC channels to be cable format limited
and the Sampling Rate (SR) range to be between 11025 and 96000 Hz.

In PowerSDR setup on the VAC audio setup, I set the sampling rate to
48000 Hz. MixW is configured for 12000 Hz. The audio channel down
converted to the appropriate sampling rate and bit depth for the
soundcard.

Now, when do this, you must start PowerSDR in DigiX mode with VAC
enabled BEFORE starting the soundcard program because PowerSDR
predefines the VAC channels when it is enabled. You can see this from
the VAC Control Panel.

I have not tried this with other programs, so you mileage may vary.

Re: [Flexradio] Questions about Database

2007-07-27 Thread Tim Ellison
 1. What is the best way to reinitialize the database?

In the PowerSDR application folder, delete or rename the file
powersdr.mdb

2. Under what circumstances should the database be reinitialized? (for
example, should it be done every time there's a new SVN update?)

Always when a new version is released. For SVN versions, you should
review the developer's notes for the changes you are uploading and if
database changes have been indicated, a rebuild is recommended. If
strange things start happening, rebuild the database

3. I assume the database contains various values that are manually
entered by the user (such as the settings for NR, LPT Address, and so
forth) as well as those generated by automatic calibration procedures.
Is there a way to dump all the values so that there is a easily
accessible record of them, or is the recommended procedure to make note

You can export an Access DB to a variety of formats, such as
spreadsheets, text and CSV to name a few. There is also a database
migration tool for those who do not have Access for moving user defined
data tables. If you are not familiar with Microsoft Access database
structures, then tread lightly using Ray's Database Table Migration
Utility (DTMU). Do not migrate tables that contain configuration
parameters. The KB article 10381 will provide some insight. The DTMU
can be found in the 10046 KB article

Subject: [Flexradio] Questions about Database

Recently several postings have mentioned the database associated with
PowerSDR and also noted that it sometimes needs to be wiped clean. I am
hoping someone can answer a few questions about this for me. I looked
through the Knowledge Base and also the manual and didn't have much
luck--apologies to the list in advance if I overlooked the obvious.

1. What is the best way to reinitialize the database?

2. Under what circumstances should the database be reinitialized? (for
example, should it be done every time there's a new SVN update?)

3. I assume the database contains various values that are manually
entered by the user (such as the settings for NR, LPT Address, and so
forth) as well as those generated by automatic calibration procedures.
Is there a way to dump all the values so that there is a easily
accessible record of them, or is the recommended procedure to make note
of any values that one might want to restore later?

Thanks very much for any answers,

Sam W2SNX

Re: [Flexradio] parallel port

2007-07-27 Thread Tim Ellison
Make sure the parallel adapter puts out the full 5 volts as specified by
the IEEE spec. Low voltage parallel ports (like ones found on some
cheap parallel cards and laptops) will cause a problem bit banging the
SDR-1000. It does not use the standard printer signals.

The scenario:
New, hot, motherboards seem to be getting away from standard pci slots
(I only have 2) and one each serial and parallel ports. USB is the
likely excuse for the ports disappearing. I have stuff on the bench that
MUST run on a parallel port (altera byteblaster II).

The problem:
I went and got a 2 parallel port board for pci express (didn't want
to use up the last plain pci slot).
powersdr will do everything control wise but the front end of the radio
is dead - no receive signal or output RF. This on svn 1125 (1.8.0) and
svn 1357.

Plug it back into lpt1 (378) and it's back to normal.
Probably obvious but I'm old and dumb today

The question:
What does the stork need on the parallel cable beyond the normal printer
signals ?

Actually, it will be called Flex-radio Genuine Authorization, and will

PTT or transmit on CW, with higher rates of checking on contest weekends
(because the risk of out of band operation is higher).

Re: [Flexradio] DVK and MFJ Voice Keyer Questions

2007-07-29 Thread Tim Ellison
The mic connector on the front of the SDR-1000 is a pass thru to the
1/8 TRS mic connector on the back of the SDR-1000 that HAS to be
plugged into the soundcard to work. There is only one physical phone
input to the SDR-1000; the soundcard.

You have to feed the output of the DVR to the input of the sound card.

Subject: [Flexradio] DVK and MFJ Voice Keyer Questions

With a previous Yaesu, I used a MFJ voice keyer.
Worked perfectly.
It sort of works with the SDR1K.
I plug the output directly to the connector on the front of the SDR1K.

If I hit a buffer button, it keys the rig and sends the recorded buffer
to the SDR1K.

I can hear the buffer being sent via the little speaker in the MFJ DVK.
But it seems 'flatter'.
Doesn't seem to have the punch I produce using my Heil ProSet boom mic.

For instance
Using the Heil boom mic on the ProSetPlus I can see a definitive pattern
to my voice in the panadaptor 2.1 filter display.
Using the DVK output, it's similar, just not as 'sharp'.

The other issue, I can hear my own voice if the Monitor is enabled using
my Heil ProSet mic.
But nothing from the monitor if I use the DVK, feeding mic connector on
the SDR1K.

ProSet mic goes to Edirol input
DVK mic output goes to PWSDR mic connector.
So??? am I correct in thinking that I need to feed the DVK to the
Edirol?

2nd question is
I think I read mention of a built in DVK in the future.
Is this still in the works? I'm trying to minimize the station.

Pse and tu.

Subject: [Flexradio] Transmit problem

Flexers,

I'm having a transmit problem with my SDR1000.
Here's the lineup:
SDR1000 with all the options (ATU, PA, RFE, transverter) Edirol FA66 USB
cable All audio lines isolated between computer, Edirol and the radio.
Ferrite clamps on all of the audio and control cables.
Radio gear, computer, tuner, etc. all connected to common shack ground.
Palstar tuner
Butternut vertical

The problem is that on 40 Meters, when I key the transmitter, the
forward power goes up over 200 watts with any setting over 10W drive
setting. At that point the SWR (as shown on the Palstar and on
PowerSDR) goes through the roof, and the power output from the Flex does
as well. It ONLY happens on 40 meters and ONLY when connected to the
antenna (i.e. there is no problem transmitting into a dummy load.)

I substituted a dummy load at each location between the transmitter and
the antenna and thus ruled out issues with the coax, bulkhead
feedthroughs, tuner, etc.

So, it appears to be an antenna problem (perhaps a short or open that
only shows up at power above 10 watts...)

What puzzles me is the SDR1000 cranking out such high power (as reported
by PowerSDR, the tuner and an in-line wattmeter) under a high SWR
condition. PowerSDR shows High SWR on the panadapter display, but
doesn't cut back the power.

So, here's my question: would an RF feedback / antenna problem account
for this behavior?

Mark

Re: [Flexradio] I can't seem to do this with PWSDR1k

2007-08-02 Thread Tim Ellison
Bill.

What you are asking for is not hardware dependent; it is a function of
PowerSDR. With the second RX installed (which is very different from
MultiWatch), you should have independent control of the filter width.
The interaction of the second RX with the transceiver and the UI to
manipulate those controls is still in the preliminary design stages.

Will I be able to with the 5K???

Chasing FW0MO on 80 meters split this morning I enabled the MultiRX so
that I could hear the station he just worked.

I had the filter set to 100Hz on the FW0 Great, really cut down the qrn
so I could copy the FW0 But that also means 100Hz on VFO B.

I couldn't find a way to widen VFO B and still maintain 100Hz on VFO A.
The panadaptor was showing numerous people calling him but they fell
outside of the filter so I couldn't tell which blip was the one I wanted
to xmit on.

It would be nice to have separate filter widths for each vfo.
Or does someone have a better way of doing this?

You joke Frank, but how cool would it be to
don your stereo goggles and see each receive
waterfall as a three dimensional surface?

You could use your cyber-glove to reach into
one of the receive planes and grasp an interesting
signal, setting the filter widths with your
hand motions. You could then touch the start
of his signal to hear the whole transmission.

I can hardly wait for version 2 of the software.
