[Gimp-user] Before I make a feature request....
Friends, When I use the save as file option, in the Save Image dialog box, the leftmost pane, under Places shows at the top, a section containing Recently used, then the directories and hardware information, then at the bottom, if they exist, any bookmarks. Now as it happens, I have a fairly complex file structure, and I make extensive use of bookmarks, but my machine has a device which reads multiple forms of media most of which I have no use for, so the Places pane has en extensive list of devices I never use. What I'd like to do is to propose a reordering of this pane to the developers, so that either defined bookmarks would appear higher on the list, or that media readers would only show on the list if they hold media. But before I make the request on the developer's list, I thought I'd first query this group to see whether anyone else would find it useful, or alternatively, whether the request has been made, and there are sound reasons why it cannot be implemented. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

Jeremy Nell wrote: What is the reason for the colour picker not being able to pick colours on layers outside of the currently active layer? I'm not on the design team, so what follows is pure speculation on my part, but it would seem to me that good interface design would be to have all tools work as closely to the same way as possible. Thus, if one cannot paint, draw, fill, or rotate, c. on any but the active layer, one would assume that the color picker would also work only on the active layer. But if you're going to pick colors off of some other layer than the active one, one would have to specify which layer one is picking the color from, as otherwise the tool would not know which color to select, that is, there might be content in more than one layer. So one would have to specify which layer to select from in any case, which means that in many instances, even if one could choose from a layer that is not active, it would be necessary to specify exactly which layer, and in this case, it is probably not any more effort to temporarily make the layer containing the desired color the active layer, and then switch back. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

Re: [Gimp-user] Crop mystery? I'm gonna sound like an idiot
Jim: Note that I am on the current version, and may not ever have used 2.2.13. However, in the current version, there are two crop to selection choices, one in the Image menu, and one in the Layer menu. The one in the image menu acts like you were expected; the image is trimmed to the size of the selection. The one in the layer menu acts just as you describe now, that is, the image around the selection is removed, and you are left with a transparent background. Sounds to me like you chose the wrong crop to selection. There at least two ways to correct your problem: you can select the desired area of the image, and crop to selection from the image menu; you can change the canvas size using the canvas size option in the image menu (Note: you may have to adjust the offset). Re: [Gimp-user] question
David, Since my interpretation of what you wrote I have a picture jps file. I would like to make a circle and then copy it and then paste it at various places onthe picture. What do I have to do to accomplish this goal. is a bit different from what Saul answered, here's my answer: 1) Open the ~.jpg file you wish to modify. 2) In the layers dialog, create a new layer by clicking on the icon at the far left of the bottom of the layers dialog window. Set the size of the new layer a bit larger than the circle you want (so, if you want your circle to have a radius of 150 pixels, for example, set the size of the new layer at 325 x 325 pixels), and fill it with transparency. 3) Make the new layer the active layer by clicking on it in the layers dialog. 4) In the toolbox, select the ellipse (circle) tool, and use the ellipse tool to select a region on the new layer. 5) Click the edit menu at the top of the image, to open the edit menu, and from that menu select (about 1/3 of the way from the bottom) stroke selection. For this puprose, I'd probably choose to use the option stroke with a paint tool. 6) Save the image as an ~.xcf file. Saving the image as an ~.xcf file maintains the separate layers. Now, move the circle to a point you want to emphasize on the image, and export the image to a ~.jpg file; then move the circle to the next point, and export the image. If you need to have more than one area designated at a time, you can duplicate the layer containing the circle as many times as needed, and move various layers containing a circle to various points on the image. Re: [Gimp-user] Help recovering a bad .xcf file
Jade: Just for what it might be worth, here's my ordinary work method. When I decide to start a major project, I give it a name, and use that name for a directory / folder. Then I create a text file, Log.txt using my favorite text editor. I next create a subdirectory Start into which I copy any material from external sources; if I would have to spend much time searching for some item I used, it would get stored in this folder. Information I might want to keep track of about files in the start folder, for example, the name of the source, and the path at the time I found the image, would be listed in the log.txt file. When I start work, I keep progress notes in the log file, for example Started with my image; adjusted color balance to ... Added image2.png as a layer to the image, and converted it to use as a mask. At major break points, for example, if I decide to retrieve something from the kitchen, or if someone comes to the door, if it's been a while since I saved my work, or most importantly, if I reach a point where I'm not sure what to do next, I save the working image as 00n.xcf, where n is the next sequential number. At the same time, I save the log file as 00n.txt. I close the file (and often close GIMP), reopen the files (00n.xcf and 00n.txt), and immediately save the files wioth an incremented name so that subsequent work does not overwrite the previous save. This sounds like a lot of work, but I think it has actually saved me a lot of time, in the number of times I decided a ways down one path, that I should have done it the other way. It's a whole lot easier in this case to save version 010, and reload version 006, and explore the results of taking the other path. And the reason for saving version 010, is that sometimes I only think I would have liked the other path. Finally, I regularly save the main folder in multiple places on different mediums. For example, on two different physical hard drives, or on a physical hard drive and thumb drive. I can't think of a significant file of which I don't have at least two copies. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

Friends The reason behind part of what I wrote: At the same time, I save the log file as 00n.txt. I found with various packages, most no longer around, that if I periodically closed down the software, and allowed it to reset itself, that I had fewer abnormal ends. This is not so true with GIMP, and other modern packages, but I still find that I'm much more likely to have a serious problem with GIMP when I've worked on 35 or 40 images during a work session, than when I've worked with 4 or 5. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

This will only work if you haven't merged the text dialog into another layer, even another text layer: in the layers dialog, make the layer with the bit of text you want to edit the active layer, and click on the text to open the text dialog. Note that in a layer dialog, only the text is in the layer, so if you are using a font with a large size, you might have to click exactly on a character of the text. Also, I have a smudge brush effect currently behind a text layer. The brush effect was a long time before the text layer. I need to remove the brush effect. How do I do so without going backwards in the history, thus eliminating the text (and any other previous work on the project after the smudge tool was used)? Activate the layers dialog, select the layer with the brush effect, and delete it. Of course, if there is other content in the layer that contains the brush effect you want to eliminate, that will be deleted, too. Is there any way to save projects in progress to continue editing later, with the history intact? I know that saving an image as an ~.xcf file will preserve the layers. I've never tried to save a file with an intact history, so I may be wrong, but I'm not sure you can save a file with the history intact. I've never tried to do this, because I've never needed to, since my standard workflow method is that when I work on a highly complex image, where I anticipate that I might want to have access to the history, I create this history by incremental back-ups; that is, after I have layer 1 the way I want it, I save the work, then when I get layer 2 the way I want it, I make second a back-up with a different name, and when I get layer 3 the way I want it, I make a backup with a name distinct from the first two. ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

Rich Evans wrote: I have an RGB image that is basically a black background with many colorful objects and white text. --- I'd like to invert the image so that it is a white background with black text but a simple invert inverts the colors in all the colored objects as well. Is there a technique or tool to invert any part of the image that is only a shade of grey? i.e. invert pixeils with a saturation of ~0 (if that is how you say it). I could imagine a filter that does a simple RGB invert for any pixel whose calculated RGB saturation value is below a set threshold. Does this type of tool/script exist? Here's how I'd do this: First, I'd make a copy of the original image. Second, working with the copy, I'd add a new layer, filled with white, and move that layer to the bottom of the layer stack. Third, I'd make a copy of the original image, and move the copy to the top of the stack, if it doesn't happen to be there at the beginning. If necessary, I'd switch the color paletes so that black is the active color. Then I'd use the facility to select by color tool to select the white areas, making certain that there were not highlights of some of the many colorful objects which got included as well. I'd then paint or bucket fill as necessary to convert the formerly white areas to black. Fourth, returning to the original layer, I'd select all of the areas which are black, and remove them. Finally, merge the layers together, and you should have achieved the effect you wish. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user

[Gimp-user] WHat are my options, here
Friends, I'm trying to figure the best way to use GIMP blend colors in a particular application. I have a topographical map, and I want to apply a color gradient which follows the contour lines of the map, and blends from a darker hue at the lower contour to a lighter hue at the next higher contour. The contour lines are not parallel. In the final image, I want a uniform darker hue right next to the contour line, and a uniform ligher hue at the higher one. A further complication is that the contours do not have a uniform direction. In one part of the image the gradient from 10 units to 20 units will be right to left, in another part of the image going from 10 units to 20 will go from left to right, and in still others, the contour representing 20 units will be a smaller irregular shape inside the larger, different, but still irregular shape representing an elevation of 10 units. I've thought of a number of ways to do this manually, for example, divide the map into different layers at the contour lines, and using the airbrush tool to overlay the colors; another is to leave the different contour levels in one layer, and use the smudge tool to blend across the contours. But are there filters of plug-ins which might automate at least part of the process? ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
Re: [Gimp-user] Measure tool (feature proposition)
I agree with Adam that it might be a valuable addition to be able to select an area of GIMP, and determine the size of area. As to scaling issues, as when dealing with a map, the method I use for this is to open an instance of my favorite spreadsheet program in a small (about 3 or 4 dozen cells--6 x 6 or 6 x 8--window, and use that to do any necessary math calculations. When confronted with Adam's problem of scaling from a distance on a map measured in pixels to an actual distance, I enter the necessary formula in spreadsheet cell, and when I enter a number of pixels, and the spreadsheet cell shows the actual distance. from for example, if I have an image of some object that I know to be perpendicular, but is not parallel to the plain of the image, and I want to change the perspective so the image appears parallel, AND so that the length of the image is unchanged when it the perspective is altered. BTW, I'm not sure I've ever had the occasion to need this in GIMP, but if it is not there, the ability to determine the total length of a selected path in pixels might also be a nice addition. Maybe this would be a good Summer of Code 2010 project, though. ns Adam Majewski wrote: Hi there, i sometimes need to measure distances on photo. i do so using not only gimp but i need also calculator to do it. Easiest example is screenshot of google map, where you have scale on bottom, and you would like to know the distance from A to B on this scale. Much further feature would be measure of areas, using also feature of scale. Simple areas like square, rectangle, or any of quadrilaterals, triangle, oval, circle, ellipse etc... I know dial up is a pain, especially with files as large as the GIMP Windows installer, and the GIMP help files. Meantime, since I know it installed on my system, and since I know it is an [set of] html files, I simply point my internet brower [I prefer Seamonkey, but the same technique should work with any browser] to the top level of the help files on my system, and bookmarked it. When I need to open the local help files, I simply open the browser, and click on the link. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] Don't reinvent the wheel department....
Friends: A bit of help, if you would... I had access to a microfilm of an old (~400 years) manuscript of music, from which I was able to make usable scans, which I am not in the process of reviewing. Some images (cf. http://users.waymark.net/mjolnir-dsl/10b1.tif)are quite easy to work with; others (cr. http://users.waymark.net/mjolnir-dsl/12T1.tif) are bit more challenging. The challenging images generally have all the information in them I need, but that information is in pixels in a mid-gray tone surrounded by darker pixels, as the pixels in the vicinity of GIMP co-ordinates 726,110. What I'd like to do is to use the select by color tool to select the pixels with the desired mid-gray values, and then use them as a mask. However, when I try to use select by color, it picks up the mid-gray pixels well enough, but picks up all the darker ones and some of the lighter ones as well. Is there a way to adjust the tool so that it selects just the mid-gray values that I want, or is there a better tool to use? ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
Re: [Gimp-user] Don't reinvent the wheel department....
Friends: Where I wrote: ...snippage... GIMP co-ordinates 726,110. ...snippage... I inadvertantly used co-ordinates from the wrong image; in the image http://users.waymark.net/mjolnir-dsl/12T1.tif) the mid-gray tones that contain the useful information are the pixels around 635,134. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] Default starting tool
Friends: I know I can affect the starting tool by selecting the Set input device settings on exit button in preferences / input devices panel, but I'd really like to have the move tool as my starting tool, without having to remember to select it every time I shut down GIMP. Is there a setting somewhere that would let me do this? ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
Re: [Gimp-user] can't save JPEG,EPS and PSD
While part of the original poster's earlier post was answered, viz. that at this time it might be possible to export paths to EPS and PSD files, at this time the exporters are not coded to support this, unless there were answers in the earlier thread that I did not receive (I received a total of four answers to the original post), part of the original question--saving paths in JPEG files--was not answered. [And I don't have the knowledge to answer it.] ns Hi, On Mon, 2008-11-24 at 13:29 +0700, surasak muchawech wrote: We have used GIMP 2.6.2 on OSX 10.4. Re: [Gimp-user] Convert text to path
community help wrote: Hi, I'm reading in the manual http://docs.gimp.org/en/ch07s05s05.html that I can convert tet to path, but I cannot find or I don't know how to access the text tools option Create path from text button they are talking about. What I am doing is double clicking on the text layer on the layers window, maybe this is wrong? You don't say what version of GIMP you are using, but the bar, [Create] path from Text is in the text toolbox, not the layers window. Note that in GIMP 2.6, the wording on the bar omits the word Create. ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
[Gimp-user] Intro 2.6.2 question
Gimp user; subscriber to the GIMP newsgroup (comp.graphics.apps.gimp), whose ISP is dropping USENET support, hence subscribing here. Using GIMP 2.6.2 on WIN XP, I find behavior that I didn't find before. If I have an image, a toolbox, and the layers dialog open at once, and move the toolbox and layers dialog open at once, the most recently selected item is on top of the previously selected item. However, if I move the image (and main toolbar) behind either one, the image is always behind the other two. I checked the bug reports, but don't see any reports of this behavior. Is this a new configuration option I haven't found yet? Or is this a bug, that only affects me? ns ___ Gimp-user mailing list Gimp-user@lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU https://lists.XCF.Berkeley.EDU/mailman/listinfo/gimp-user
