Re: ARCserve vs Retrospect Server Backup

Hi all,

Note that Retrospect is able to back up *most* open files. Most database
files though will be inaccessible to other application while they are in use
by the database.

I've been using ARCserve for many years to backup my NT 4.0 Server and
NT Workstations and long time ago to backup a Novell server. For the
Mac side of things though I've always preferred and used Retrospect. I
prefer Retrospect because it's much easier to install, use and maintain
than ARCserve. Both products have been very reliable though I'd have to
say that Retrospect has proved to be a little more reliable than ARCserve.

Now I'm finding myself needing to upgrade ARCserve to the new ARCserve
2000. However, I'd really rather drop ARCserve and switch to Retrospect
Server Backup to perform the NT 4.0 Server (and eventually Windows 200
Server) and NT Workstation backups. Comparing the the two product's
features and supported drives looks to be essentially the same.

Anyone out there with experience using Retrospect Server Backup on a
Windows NT 4.0 Server? I'd love to get some feedback about it.

 Thanks!!

Re: How can a client name change?

2001-03-05 Thread Irena Solomon

Hello,

Steve, in your situation my suspicion was that this behavior resulted from a
combination of two factors; have you had a chance to set up the test I
suggested? You were dealing with DHCP clients with very short leases that
were added by direct IP address. If you can change the way Retrospect finds
these clients (Direct IP - Multicast/Subnet Broadcast) will either solve
the problem or direct us to the next step in troubleshooting. As it sounds
like you've decided to address it in another way, perhaps David and I could
pick up the troubleshooting where you and I left off. This kind of behavior
isn't normal, and I can't offer a simple solution without troubleshooting.

David, how were these clients added originally? Are they DHCP clients? How
long is the lease? I'd prefer to take this off-list, as it will likely
require troubleshooting that won't interest the list in general.

Thanks,

I use a Mac to backup a Dell PIII to a DAT drive. (This was an
evolution, not a new setup.) Yesterday I realized that the backup wasn't
working because the name of the PC had changed from "Dell PIII
Accounting" to "111ES" about a week ago.

Any ideas as to what could have done this? And the odds of intentional
action by the direct staff are quite low. The machine is on the internet
via an ADSL line through IPNR on a 7100. No ports are mapped to the
Dell. And email isn't used on the Dell. Only surfing.

So are there any reasonable accidental ways this could have happened.
Could it be a virus picked up via surfing?

 TIA

I'm having this problem too. Irena Solomon from Dantz contacted me
about this, but they are unable to duplicate this on their end.

I'm primarily seeing this with Win9x laptops. I'll originally give
the Retrospect client a name like computer@room number where
 computer is the "machine name".

The machines will back up successfully for weeks, then
all-of-a-sudden, the Retrospect client will rename itself to
computer. This happened to about 20 computers (all Win9x
 computers).

This also just happened the past week when I updated a laptop from
Win98 to WinME. Immediately after I did this, the client was renamed.

Nobody at Dantz that contacted me has any real idea why this is
happening (I sent them the logs to show that at no time did the Mac
program do the renaming -- it was pretty clear that this was
something happening on the client end.)

I've since gone to the practice of making sure the client name is the
same as the computer name and it hasn't happened since.

 FWIW.

Retrospect will detect that the drive has compression and will override the

Re: Error -36 (i/o error, bad media?)

2001-03-01 Thread Irena Solomon

Hello,

Sometimes the Disk First Aid utility and even Norton can not detect the -36
error.

Apple's Drive Setup does not do a "low level format" on IDE hard disks,
which means that bad blocks (-36 errors) will not be fixed by using the
format option in Drive Setup. Zero all data is also not helpful.

You should run the "test disk" option in Drive Setup. This will look for and
repair bad blocks (sector sparing as Apple calls it).

Apple's TIL entry for this error:

Type -36 error (I/O Errors) This file is having difficulty while
either reading from the drive or writing to the drive. The file may have
been improperly written data to the drive or the hard drive or disk may be
damaged. This is almost always indicative of a media error (hard error on
the disk). Sometimes (rarely) it is transient.

Solutions: Try copying the file to another drive. Use a disk recovery
software, such as Disk First Aid to examine the disk. You can try rebooting
with all extensions off. Once in a while this will allow you to read the
data. The file in question should be restored from a backup that was stored
on a different disk. Regular backups can reduce the time to recover from
this error.

Experience tells me that if Retrospect is saying there's a problem, then
there's a problem. You might try running DiskWarrior on the drive. It
frequently fixes things that Norton doesn't (you don't say what version of
Norton you're using or what version of the OS is running, btw). Of course,
just because the computer is new doesn't mean it's perfect. Sometimes even
new stuff doesn't work (don't even get me started here...).

Also check the PowerDomain control panel to be sure the scsi cards are
 configured correctly.

It's also possible that your cables inside the computer aren't connected
perfectly. You might want to reseat the ATA cable to the drive.

 Just some thoughts,

Re: Transfer Rates - Dantz Help?

Yes, these are numbers before compression. The client does not compress data
before sending it across the network. Further, Retrospect has no way to know
what kinds of compression you're getting if you're using hardware
compression. All number reported reflect the raw data being copied from the
source.

Re: Retrospect 4.3 (Mac) Assertion Check?

2001-02-07 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Mark,

Retrospect does internal consistency checks to ensure internal operations
are fine. Typically this is an indication that an internal file in use by
Retrospect has been corrupted.

This particular assert we are currently tracking and believe it to be ASIP
Memory Management-related. Most users who have seen this error report that
after restarting the assert does not reproduce. In the instances where it
was reproducible, we've found that disabling third-party server
administration tools have been effective in addressing it.

You're right, the error code is not on the "Common Error Codes" section, but
it is in the Knowledgebase. If you have questions, of course, please give us

Re: Retro forgets I have an autoloader

2001-02-01 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Steve,

When using Retrospect with autoloaders, keep in mind that there are two
modes of operation: unattended and interactive. All immediate actions (under
the Immediate tab), except "Run," are automatically in interactive mode. All
automated actions (or scripts, including those started under the Run menu or
with the Run button) are automatically in unattended mode.

In interactive mode, Retrospect is assuming the user is in front of the
machine and can be prompted for input. This means that even though you have
an autoloader, if you are doing an immediate backup, Retrospect will prompt
you for the correct tape.

In unattended mode, Retrospect is assuming the user is not in front of the
machine. In this mode, using an autoloader, it will automatically seek out
the tape(s) it needs for the restore. You may switch between the two modes
once the restore operation has begun from the Control menu. Try running in
unattended mode and letting Retrospect complete the operation itself.

Regarding why the pop-up menu isn't appearing consistently, that may be an
indication of device or communication problems; I'd strongly suggest that
you give us a call and discuss this over the phone.

As I type, I'm doing a restore of a folder that got nuked from the server due
to human error. My drive is a Sony DDS-3, the TSL-S9000L autoloader.
Retrospect 4.3 on a beige G3, Mac OS9.04, 224megs RAM. My restore first
required tape # 2 of the set, which I inserted in slot 8 of an otherwise empty
magazine. It read it fine, then asked for tape #10. I happened to have tapes
#6-12 in a separate magazine, so I next loaded that magazine, and choose the
"scan tapes" option from the pop-up menu. After it read the tape names I used
the pop-up menu to direct it to tape #10.

Next it needed tape #11, which is in the next slot. But instead of offering
me a pop-up menu to select the slot, I'm looking at an eject button where the
pop-up with the slots and the names of their tapes should be.

So I eject the magazine (as it's my only option!), and reload it. After
identifying that 8 tapes are present, instead of giving me the pop-up menu
with the "scan tapes" option, I'm told there's no media, and invited to eject
 just like before.

Exactly how I'm to eject media that isn't there, I don't really get. I click
eject, nothing happens. Fortunately, the autoloader eject button works. I
eject the cartridge, reinsert, and let it begin the tape shuffle dance again.

Now it acknowledges there are 8 tapes present. I choose slot #6 from the
pop-up menu, and the restore continues. After reading that tape, it asked for
tape 12, and had the pop-up menu available this time. I directed it to slot
 #7, and the restore completed.

Can anybody explain why I twice lost the pop-up to choose the slot?

 TIA!
 Steve.

running a backup though, as it will still need to copy and verify.

The best bet is to have unique full backups from the original source anyway,
so you are not relying on a copy of a copy for your backup sets.

 Hi,
Any one any suggestions on this?
I am running the backup server script and using a scsi dat tape, rotating
between four. Is there a way of copying the contents of the storage set from
one tape to another so that I do not have to repeat the procedure 4 times?

 David

Re: script suggestions?

2001-01-11 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Donovan,

You'll want to create two new, uniquely named backup sets that are stored on
the second drive. If you are not formatting the drives as removable media
then the drive name is not relevant. Keep everything separate and distinct.

Modify your scripts to include rotating backups to these new file backup
sets. Creating another set directly from the source is better than copying
from one backup set to another backup set, which ends up being a copy of a
copy.

If the correct drive isn't connected at the time of backup, the backup will
fail with an error -43, file/folder not found. There is no media request as
there is with other types of media.

Two things to remember:

1. Do not format the drives as removables.
2. There is no such thing as extreme paranoia in regards to backup data
security!

Hello retro,
I was wondering if I could get some suggestions on a back-up
script/system I've put together.
I am backing up our ASIP server via mounted volumes on another host G4
computer to a Mac file on a USB 60 gig HD. Things are working great!!! I
have two back-up set files that sum up to about 29 gigs (compressed).
Daily back-ups affect the file size only minimally. ( did I express that I
am very happy with this setup? :-) Anyway, I am about ready to throw a
stick in the spokes of my system though. This small USB (buslink) back up
drive is great. It can be unplugged and carried if needed. Here is my q:
(finally)
We bought a second USB (buslink) 60gig drive. Our Idea is to alternate
the two drives every week. (similiar to changing tapes) We then would take
the "off-drive" to an off-site location. (because of our xtreme paranoia)
So, since I have a full backup on this first drive I need to know the best
way to get the second drive going. My thinking was I could manually copy
the back-up set files from #1 drive to #2 drive and then name the second
drive the same as the first (after shutting off the first drive of course)
Would retrospect recognize this as the same back-up set? If yes, in another
week or so when its time to change back to the first drive, is there any
problems relating to the scripts that would see the old info as a conflict?
With tapes, Retro can ask you for the appropriate b/u tape. But I am
not sure about alternat HD's
If this is not going to work please offer alternitive routes using our
goals and equipment.
Thanks. - D

Are you using Retrospect Client on the NT Server or are you using network

If you are using shares, there are two sets of permissions that are in
effect--the share permissions and the file permissions. Share permissions
are accessed through the "Sharing" tab of the properties dialog for the
 shared folder.

Other than that, I'm not sure.

Re: Backup problem

2001-01-08 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Julian,

First ensure that the matching options for your scripts have not been
changed (Edit - Script - Options - [More Choices] - Execution .
Matching).

Next, the quickest test is to go to the Reports - Contents window, select
your backup set and pick a session in which Retrospect tried to back all the
files up again, then pick a session just prior. Select a file that
Retrospect tried to back up again from each session and get properties.
Compare these windows and you should be able to discern what changed that
caused Retrospect to want to back up all the files again.

If you're still having troubles pinpointing what's happening, please give
Technical Support a call directly.

I am attempting to backup a particular volume on a Digital OpenVMS system. I
am using NFS client software on my NT server to mount the volume and I am
 running Retrospect Server 1.51.

I am performing a normal backup and all files are being copied and matched
 to previous backups perfectly.

A problem occurs when I reboot the VMS system. Retrospect decides to backup
every file again. It seems that Retrospect is not matching the selected
files to the previous backup catalogue properly. Snapshots of previous
sessions confirms that there are not changes to file dates, sizes or names
 after the reboot.

Re: multiple sets on single media?

2001-01-08 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Maxine,

Retrospect looks at each tape as a member of a single backup set, so you may
not use that tape for more than one backup set.

One of the primary reasons for this is that allowing this would negate the
security of having multiple backup sets in the first place. If your tape is
damaged, you lose all your backup sets. For maximum security, have rotating
tapes from multiple backup sets.

Yes, it is possible. Since the AppleTalk can be on a different
interface than the TCP/IP, just set the AppleTalk control panel to
use internal and the TCP/IP to use the card.

I was just wondering - this is just a thought. Would it be possible to have
retrospect backing up through two netwrok cards - that is my 7200 has two
etherenet cards the n built 10 base and an additional 100 base network -
woudl it be possible to have retrospect work through both, backing up the
slow appletalk network clients through the 10 base onto tape and the fast
100base etherenet card taking care of my dtp clients straight onto a fast
scsi disk drive? Is that possible?

Re: Retrospect clients on an Airport network

2000-12-26 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi all,

While we do not "officially" support backup of machines connecting via
Airport, the following possible workaround may work for you. Note that the
reason we don't support backup via this protocol is that the data transfer
is not typically as reliable as Retrospect would require for backup.
Communication may be inconsistent or may fail all together when using
Retrospect TCP/IP via the Airport device.

Here are the steps for setting up backup over airport. If this doesn't work,
you may not be able to back these computers up without some kind of physical
connection. Please contact Technical Support if you have any other
questions, or if you would like help setting up a machine to back up over
Apple Talk.

1) On the client (the machine running Airport), look at the TCP/IP address
that you have been given by the Airport
2) Start the Airport Admin Utility (the program used to configure the
Airport module itself)
3) Select the Airport module and select the "Configure" button
4) Select the "Network" tab and then selected the "Port Mapping" button
5) Hit the "Add..." button and on the screen, fill in:
   Public Port: 497
Private IP Address: The address from step 1 above
   Private Port: 497
6) Select "OK", then the "Done" buttons to get back to the "Update" tab.
7) There, select the "Update" button to force the reconfiguration of the
Airport Module.
8) Quit the program and go to the Macintosh on the network that has
Retrospect.
9) In Retrospect, go to the "Clients on the Network" screen and "Forgot" the
old version of the client.
10) Hit "Add by address" and input the TCP/IP address of the Airport module.

Does anybody know of a workaround for getting Retrospect clients to
work on an Apple Airport network that uses a software base station?
The Apple Airport site says that Retrospect may not work with NAT,
used by the Airport Software base station. It says that port-mapping
may work, but doesn't go any further.

If the Airport base station is set to act as a DHCP server for the wireless
clients, then the IP address of the client will quite possibly change on a
fairly regular basis. If you want to do backups of wireless clients, you'd
be much better of setting up the AirPort as a bridge instead of a NAT
router. We backup several laptops this way, and it works well...though it
does hammer the wireless bandwidth pretty hard!

Re: Floppy

2000-12-14 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Matt,

Retrospect can poll the floppy drive constantly on systems with SuperDisk
drivers and no SuperDisk. The problem is that the pre-installed system had
SuperDisk drivers installed, even though there is no SuperDisk on the
computer. The fix for this is a simple edit of the registry.

1. Launch Regedit and open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
2. Find the key (or similar): HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \Enum \SCSI
\COMPAQ__LS-120_COM___
\MFCHILD0001PCIVEN_8086DEV_7111%SUBSYS_FUNC_0110
4. Within this key look for a value named "CurrentDriveLetter". Change this
from "A" to "B" (or any unused drive letter on your system).
5. Quit Regedit, saving changes, and restart.

Hope that helps!

could not find anything related to this problem. I was wondering if
the ASPI driver has something to do with it as we just clicked
NEXT-NEXT-FINISHED all through the installation, accepting all

 drivers as well.

Re: Piton Protocol violation

2000-12-13 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Ben,

Are you receiving this error on one client or more than one? The piton
protocol is a proprietary encapsulation scheme, designed to protect
Retrospect's data packets as they travel over your network. Damaged
encapsulation indicates to Retrospect that the data contained within is
likely corrupted.

515 errors are almost always caused by a router that does incidental damage
to the packet as it strips or adds headers and footers that allow the packet
to travel from segment to segment along the network. It's not unheard of,
however, for a bad router or bad networking equipment on a specific node to
cause such problems. The text associated with the error here would lead me
to suspect that one client, but there are certainly other possibilities.

The first step would be to determine whether the 515 is associated with one
machine or many machines. A 515 error on one machine suggests problems with
that node. Try replacing transceivers, patch cables and Ethernet cards, or
changing the port into which that node is plugged on the hub.

If the 515 is associated with all of your clients, troubleshoot that piece
of network hardware which is common to all clients. Are all the machines
isolated to a single hub? Do they make the same router hop? Any sort of
pattern, along with a knowledge of your network topology, will help you
identify the faulty piece of equipment. Using a process of elimination by
substituting pieces of network equipment will help you further isolate the
problem. A telling test, if possible, is to connect the two machines with a
crossover cable. This will tell you if the problem lies on the network or is
specific to some hardware on the machines involved.

Re: Resync

2000-12-12 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi,

If you get a "resynchronizing (slow)" while rebuilding your catalog from the
backup media and this message stays up for longer than 10-20 minutes, it
means that the recatalog process has failed and will not continue any
further. Retrospect is trying to continue with the process but is unable to.

This message is a result of trying to read from a tape that lacks an end of
data marker (EOD), perhaps as a result of an unexpected stop during a
backup. Most likely you will not be able to continue using that Backup Set
and should create a new one altogether, although the data on the tape up to
that point is still good and most likely may be restored.

This came up in an earlier thread on recurring catalog out of sync errors;
if you haven't already, take a look at Tech Note 406 on our website. This
discusses missing EOD markers:

 Ok, I've got a question.

My Mac that does the backups locked up over the weekend and so last
night before I left I told the computer to TOOLS-REPAIR-UPDATE FROM
 EXISTING CATALOG.

I knew it would take a while so I decided to just leave it running last night.

I came in this morning and the tape drive (DLT) is still running and
the dialog on the screen says "Resynchronizing (slow)"

 1. Why did it start a slow resync?

 2. This is almost 14 hours later, About 65GB of data, uncompressed,
 is that normal?

The log shows that it encountered a bunch of errors and to clean the
head, so that might be part of it. I was more curious of why it kept
 running all night long though.

It seems to me that after so many errors/hours, it would do something
 different.

Re: Force use of tape (was Re: SCSI Voodoo strikes...(continued))

2000-11-27 Thread Irena Solomon

Instead of just restarting, try shutting down for a minute and then
restarting. This will ensure that everything is cleared out.

Regarding the tape, Retrospect is likely thinking that the error was a
result of defective media. When it asks for a new tape, it's erring on the
side of caution and preventing you from writing data to a potentially
defective tape. Craig's suggestion will allow you to reuse that tape,
although with one tape, it will be the same in function as resetting the
catalog in a Recycle backup.

The 102 error is generated by the hardware and indicates that the Mac is
having trouble communicating with the drive. The simplest test that you can
do is a backup to a File backup set; this will indicate for sure if you are
dealing with a device problem. Next, try a backup to a different device if
you have one available to see if the problem lies in the device or the
computer. And once you've narrowed it down, go through the troubleshooting
steps in order to pinpoint the problem.

Of course, if you have any specific questions along the way, please give us
a call.

Dantz Technical Support
925.253.3050

 Hi again,
I only received one response to the email below about 102
errors disappearing after restarts...so if anyone else has any light
to shed it would be appreciated. Since I posted we have found that if
IE crashes (which it does extremely frequently on the backup) machine
then we will always get the 102 error unless we restart first.
However, this is not the only cause of the problem...

How do you know? Have you tried never running IE on the computer? If the
problem goes away after a restart, there's definitely something corrupting
your system over time. If the computer is a dedicated backup system, disable
all unnecessary extensions and control panels and don't run IE to see if it
 happens again.

It will always fail if IE has crashed (any maybe even if it has run)
but sometimes it will fail if IE has not been run (eg over the
 weekend).

Unfortunately the backup machine is used as a workstation during the
day so we can't strip it down (at least not completely - we are in
the process of trying to get rid of much as possible).

... when Retrospect gives us the 102
error it assumes that the current tape cannot be used and asks for a
new one next time the backup runs, even if the tape appears to be
 less than half full...

So, is there any to force Retrospect to keep using that tape?

I don't know of a way to get Retrospect to append to that tape, but you can
certainly get Retrospect to use the tape by either setting the tape as
missing or erasing the tape. In either case, Retrospect will recopy the
files already on the media and continue to fill the tape.

 HTH,

 Craig

So far we have only got to the stage where we are using 1 tape per
set (we haven't brought all the clients online yet because of the
problems we are having). In that case I assume reseting the catalog
is equivalent to your suggestions. We were hoping to avoid having to
re-copy all the data already on the tape because of the difficulties
getting our G4s backed up (519 errors, see separate thread).

Re: How to control Writing to any tape...

2000-11-27 Thread Irena Solomon

What is the priority of operations? Does "Writing to any tape that is
erased or named 1-Backup" mean that Retro looks for erased tapes first, or
does it seek named tapes first and resort to erased tapes if it can't find
 a named tape?

Also, why does it treat erased tapes that have been named as simply blank
tapes that it can assign to any backup set it wants? I specifically name
the tapes so it will associate them with the proper backup set, but this
doesn't seem to matter when Retro runs unattended and loops through my
 autoloader.

I'll give you a few examples to illustrate how Retrospect chooses tapes. In
these scenarios, there are 3 tapes in the loader slots in this order: erased
tape/no name, erased or non-erased tape/pre-named, erased tape/no name.

In these examples, Retrospect is running scripted backup on these tapes in
two loader states: 1) tapes are scanned and known (i.e., tape names are
displayed in Configure - Devices); 2) tapes are not scanned and are unknown
(i.e., tapes names display "?" or "Unknown").

In both Mac Windows products, Retrospect will always use the pre-named
tape if it has to search the loader for tape names. This is true whether the
pre-named tape is erased or has Retrospect data on it. If the tape names are
known however, Retrospect will use the pre-named tape if it's got Retrospect
data on it but will use the first or last erased/unnamed tape if the
pre-named tape is erased.

On the Mac, it will almost always have to search all the tapes since memory
of the tape names is not retained after relaunches. On the PC, the magazine

Re: Error 5 and other confusing stuff

2000-11-22 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Rick,

These problems may stem from troubles identifying unique volumes on the
client. On the first NT client, ensure that all volumes have unique volume
labels. If so it's possible that duplicate serial numbers are preventing
Retrospect from seeing the volumes correctly. There's a third party utility
called VolumeId that you can use to change your volume IDs. Our website has
a link that you may follow to download the free utility:

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=3rdparty

This utility will also address the problems you are seeing on the other
client. Because of the duplicate serial numbers, Retrospect is seeing
duplicate volumes on the client.

If you have any other questions, or if you find that there are other
problems with your client volumes please give us a call and we can look into
it a bit more.

I recently inherited a Windows NT network running Retrospect Server v 5.0.
This is my first experience with Retrospect, so I was hoping to get someone
to point me in the right direction with 2 problems I'm having.

One Windows NT client gives me an error when I try to access it from the
server. When I hit the "refresh" button, I get an error that say's "Client
speed test failed, error 5 (unknown)". When I hit the "volumes" button, I
get an error that say's "Can't track volumes (error 5)". I looked at all the
documentation that I could find, and there doesn't appear to be an "error
5", so I guess it's truly unknown. ;-) I found error codes that start with
 a 5 (i.e. 527, 525). I have uninstalled, and then reinstalled the client
software. Told the server to forget the client and then re added it. I'm
kind of at a loss. Everything else on the machine seems to work fine.

Another Windows NT client, which is a new machine that I recently set up on
the network and installed Retrospect on, is also giving me fits. When I go
to the volumes on the server, it tells me the "User Rosado has two disks
named drive C that are indistinguishable from each other. One of these disks
should be renamed so that this program (and people) are not confused."
Obviously I don't have two disks named drive C, I see no mention of this or
anything like it in the documentation. Where does Retrospect get this info
 from?

Would any of you kind folks care to give me a nudge in the right direction,
or point me to some more detailed documentation. The doc's I'm finding don't
really seem to cover much. Thanks.

Re: Daily Problems with out of Sync Error messages...

2000-11-14 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Dan,

I don't know what you have tried already, but if you are repeatedly getting
catalog out of sync errors, that may be a sign of SCSI problems, corruption
on the volume on which the catalog is stored, or, as you alluded to, crashes
during the backup. If you haven't already, take a look at Tech Note 406 on
our website. This discusses missing EOD (end of data) markers, which can
have an effect on the catalog as well:

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=technotes

Typically, you'll get an out of sync catalog if the backup crashes before
the catalog is updated to reflect the data that was copied in that session.

To address it, start by rebuilding the catalog from scratch to a different
location on your hard drive. It may be helpful to break the backup down into
smaller volumes, as Retrospect updates the catalog after completing each
volume; therefore if you have to update, it will be easier. Continue your
backups (you may want to add a script to duplicate the catalog file after
the backup operation completes so you have working copies of the catalog
that you can revert to if this one has problems). If the problems seems to
persist, even in sessions during which the server doesn't crash, you may
need to investigate the possibility that SCSI problems are causing
corruption in the copied data.

For continuing problems, please give us a call so we can get specifics on
your configuration.

get no error messages during or after the archive set runs. Our servers

Please help as this is MOST frustrating!

Re: Retro.Startup Extension (Mac)

2000-11-08 Thread Irena Solomon

Since the program's automated backup scripts are stored in the System :
Preferences : Retrospect : "Retro.Config (4.2)" file, is there any problem
in removing the out-of-date Extension, and then allowing it to be rebuilt
at the next launch of the program?

To recreate the extension altogether, you'll need to quit Retrospect, trash
Retro.Startup, restart the computer, launch and quit Retrospect, then
restart the Mac again. This will create a fresh 4.2 Retro.startup.
Recreating this extension will not adversely affect your scripts.

Re: Error 541- Backup client not installed or not running

2000-11-08 Thread Irena Solomon

Re: Error 541- Backup client not installed or not running

I get this error quite a bit but it is intermittent? One night backups may
work fine and the next night I may get this error on one of my volumes?
We are using a central backup server with an HP Surestore 818 Library
attached. The backup server is a 600Mhz NT4 Server with 256MB of RAM and
plenty of local drive space. Our network is all TCP/IP with NT 4 and
Win2000 Servers and 10/100 Switches. Any ideas as to what causes this and
 to how to fix?

Hi David,

Go to that client. Is the client installed and running? Open it and make
sure it says "Ready" in the Status field. If it does not, troubleshoot this
client to see why it's not running.

If it does, has its IP address changed? Is this client's IP address assigned
by DHCP? If so, configure its subnet and log it in through subnet broadcast.
If the lease expires and it's assigned another IP address, Retrospect will
not be able to find it if you've logged it in by direct IP, or Retrospect
may be finding a different machine without a client installed.

There are other issues as well that may cause an error 541, such as multiple
NICs. For more information, either contact Technical Support or search our
Knowledgebase for that error code at:

http://partners.dantz.com:591/faq/

Look for Tech Note 413, Retrospect Client For Windows Troubleshooting.

Re: Windows Error - soccrecv

2000-11-06 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Ben,

I had a look through some of Microsoft's online resources, and this sounds
like a network error that is reported by Windows, not Retrospect. Depending
on the context of the error, it may indicate several things; I'd recommend
searching for the 10054 error at Microsoft's Knowledgebase:

http://search.support.microsoft.com/kb/c.asp?ln=en-us

If you'd like to send details to me off the list, I can look into it a bit
further. When does the error happen? Does it happen with a specific client?
Is it reproducible? What additional text does the operations log show? Any
other Retrospect errors reported?

Re: Password Protection

2000-11-06 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi,

For details on Retrospect's security options, see Tech Note 310 at:

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=technotes

I've outlined the basics below.

There are four areas of security within Retrospect and its client software:

-The Retrospect application password
-Backup Set password protection and encryption
-Client security codes
-Network (Link) Encryption

The first two deal with securing the application and the data in your backup
set.

Retrospect Application Password prevents unauthorized personnel from using
the Retrospect application. It requires that the user type in a password
when Retrospect launches or when the user tries to halt an operation in
unattended mode.

Backup Set Encryption can be set to three levels when securing a new Backup
Set:

- Password Only (no encryption): The data itself is unchanged, but a
password is required whenever the Backup Set is accessed.

- SimpleCrypt (fast): SimpleCrypt provides commercial-level security without
appreciably slowing the backup process on all but the slowest computers.

- DES (more secure): DES (Data Encryption Standard) is an advanced form of
data encryption that achieves bank-level security. The effect on backup
speed is entirely dependent on the processor, but may take three to four
times as long as an equivalent backup to a Backup Set that is not encrypted.

Retrospect can store the Backup Set password for you so you do not always
have to enter it to use the Backup Set. Go to ConfigureBackup Sets, select
the desired Backup Set, click Configure, and then click the Options tab. You
may select from the following:

- Ask for any access: Retrospect will prompt the user to enter the Backup
Set's password, preventing unattended operation.

- Save for scripted access (default): The password is not required for
scheduled executions of scripts, but Retrospect still requires that the user
enter the password for all other uses of the Backup Set.

- Save for any access: You will never be asked for the password unless the
configuration file is moved, deleted, or lost.

HTH,

Irena Solomon

Retrospect also allows you to password protect an archive. When you create a
 new
backup set, there is a button that says secure. I just use the password only
 so
I don't know what the other two choices offer. (the second choice sounds like
basic encryption and the third choice sounds like even better encryption but
slower. I keep my tapes in a secure area so I feel comfortable just using the
 password protection.

If you really wanted to be picky, you could use a combination of these ideas
 and
have to enter a password several times. I would test this idea before you
implement it though. Who know what multiple encryption would do.

to open the files, you must know the password. If Retrospect does not
have these capabilities, is there any other programs available to do

Could we get an update from Dantz and Ecrix on the VXA/Retro Mac
issue, as reported by MacIntouch, 10-20-00 (see below)?

The post on MacIntouch goes a long way to explaining some of the
problems I've been seeing with my VXA drive. If not for having just
finishing rebuilding my LAN and upgrading my net connection, and
installing new servers, routers and switches, I was going to dive
into troubleshooting the problems I've been having. Maybe all I have
to do is wait for the firmware update?

I've not only got many 206's, but errors 102 (trouble communicating),
203 (hardware failure), error 205 (lost access to storage medium),
error 100 (device rejected command). In addition, after these errors,
the drive will not continue to use the current tape, and always wants
a new one (whether 4 gigs or 40 gigs were written to it)--leading me
to believe the the end of write markers were never properly written,
which could leave the tape in an unusable condition.

Also, the drive can take up to several hours to eject a tape after
one of these errors--following Ecrix's advice to eject a tape: power
down the drive, disconnect it from the backup Mac server, turn it on
and hit the eject button many times quickly in a row. Makes for a
very tedious process of continually regenerating backup sets.

I've been using a BW G3/300 with a Miles Initio Blue Note scsi card
and OS 9.0.4 with Retro 4.3. Using the VXA tool to maximize capacity
over speed seemed to exacerbate the situation.

 Thanks,

Ensure that you are entering in the unique security code that you selected

Hi,

Andrews answer is exactly right. In the destination selection window, create
a new backup set. Set "storage Type" to File (Windows) or Macintosh File

Backups to this backup set will be incremental, and the file will grow

The the answer to the following FAQ from the Dantz website confuses me. I
need to do a regular-style backup, not a disk copy, but the program won't
let me select the hard disk as a destination. Surely, many people must
doing this by now in the era of cheap hard disks. Can anyone help, or is
this impossible at this time with Retrospect?

If all of your data will fit on a single hard disk, you can use the
duplicate operation to copy your data in Finder format from one volume to
 another.

All versions of Retrospect and Retrospect Express 4.3 or later will allow
you to write data using a File Backup Set.

Hi Garret,

We do! There is a FileMaker Pro Toggle script in the Retrospect Folder
(Retrospect: AppleScript Utilities: Script Examples: FileMaker Pro Server

Does anyone happen to have an applescript already built to close filemaker
dB's so they can backed up and the reopen after the backup is complete. I do
two nightly scripts and what I'd like to have this happen:
Filemaker/Retrospect are on the same machine.

Applescript to quit filemaker dB's at say 7:59pm
Run Retrospect Script Entire network at 8pm
Run Retrospect Script Client Archives right after entire network
 Quit Retrospect when done
 Reopen Filemaker dB's

Is this achievable? I have a dummy open dB that auto opens all my filemaker
dB's so I need to close all of them when I quit but only need to open one on
launch. So even a script that close filemaker and then reboots machine when
retrospect is done would be fine since I have the dummyopen file in my
startup folder. I know retrospect can be set to restart after a script runs
but I have two scripts a night and I am unsure if retrospect is smart enough
to know there is a second script waiting to run. Help would be greatly
appreciated, applescript is one of my weaker areas.

Re: Hourly Network Checks Revisited...

2000-09-27 Thread Irena Solomon

Hello all,

Here's a little background on how the Retrospect client deals with network
connectivity, so we can better understands why this is happening and how it
might be addressed.

The Retrospect client does in fact initiate a check of the network once an
hour. It sends a request to Open Transport; if this is configured to use a
dial-up connection, a dial-up will be initiated at that time. As mentioned,
OT doesn't communicate the protocol to the client.

I've logged the suggestion for a checkbox on the client that forgoes network
checks if a connection isn't already established, and perhaps this can be
added in a future client software release. In the meantime, a few
suggestions:

1. Go to the Remote Access Control Panel - Options - Protocol - PPP and
ensure that "Connect automatically when launching TCP/IP applications" is
unchecked.

2. The Location Manager script can be used to disable/enable the Retrospect
Client when Location Manager changes the TCP/IP settings to Ethernet. As
mentioned, this does require a reboot so the the Retrospect Client can
unload itself from the system.

Peter S., the IPNR author, gets this type of bashing on his list all the
time. His answer, and I assume it's true, is that a program can't tell
if it's on a dial up connection. The OT code hides this from you. This
causes a lot of support headaches for him as many of the problems are in
the dialing, and he has no control over when and how that's happening.

Dantz needs the same check box on it's client software

I'm under the impression that the client software does not
attempt to communicate with the network unless polled by the server.
All connections are initiated with a broadcast from a Retrospect
 Backup Server (or script).

I have 2 G3 notebooks. Both have Retrospect installed and
have identical OSs (9.0.4). One of them has this problem while the
other does not. The problem appeared when the laptop's user took it
to a foreign network and they changed something in the configuration.
I've been attempting to locate what changed. I suspect the laptop is
attempting to use NTP from the date and time control panel (however,
this does not cause the dial-up effect on dial-up only machines).

I have noticed that the date and time CP on a dial-up only
computer will attempt to connect to an NTP server the very moment you
dial. If the connection fails (poor line quality or busy signals...)
the system reports a time-server error. I suspect that while on a
network and using the Location Manager to switch from Network to
Dial-Up (without rebooting) the date and time control panel continues
to check the time server. I haven't verified this behavior, it's
just suspicious. I recall this being talked about on this thread
earlier, but never read about any resolution.

Re: can't log clients into PC-Retrospect server

2000-09-27 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Todd,

We spoke yesterday on the phone. In addition to updating drivers for the
network card, you may also want to uninstall TCP/IP, restart and reinstall
it. Of course, the quickest test for determining where to focus
troubleshooting is to install Retrospect on another machine and try to log
the clients in from there. This will show whether you need to look at the
client installations of if you should instead look at some component of the
original machine.

Subject: can't log clients into PC-Retrospect server

 Howdy,

I was working today on an 300 mhz IBM running Win 98. The system had
recently been installed with Retrospect 5.11 Workgroup Server. The
LAN was running through a standard 10Bt hub. and there were several
Macs and 2 PC's on the network including the server PC.

Retrospect launches fine, and will do local desktop backups to an
internal 20 gig Travan drive. When trying to add network clients to
the network database, a password prompt comes up, then whether you
enter a password or cancel, the PC immediately blue screens with a
cryptic error message about 'exception 06' plus some hex code. If you
hit a key to restart, the screen goes black with a white box in the
middle saying 'Explorer' and the printer starts kicking out infinite
 amounts of blank paper.

Anyway, the main thing is that Retrospect crashes after completing
the password prompt dialogue. At Dantz support's request, I deleted
the prefs and the backup prefs and tried again to no avail. They also
suggested that I update the ethernet card's driver, but since the
system is only 6 months old I wonder if that could be the problem.

Any suggestions on what else I could try appreciated. TIA for your help.

Re: 16 MB catalog limit in 4.3

2000-09-06 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi,

Thanks for posing this question. Your approach is a viable option, but I'd
be more inclined to use a file backup set for the sake of continuity and
security. You'd be treating the drives as removable disks, while they're
meant to be fixed media, and as such you have to rely on the drive mounting
for integrity of the backup set. If you should lose your catalog for
instance, and the drive does not mount properly or is not recognized during
the recatalog, your entire backup set may be unusable.

A more reliable method would be using each drive as the destination for a
file backup set to which you would perform incremental backups. While this
still leaves you with three backup sets and three copies of your data, as
neither file backups nor duplicates can span volumes, I recommend having
more than one backup set in any case. This method could easily use media
rotation, or better yet a backup server script could be designed so that
backup happens to whichever drive is connected when the script starts.

If you are concerned about space, of course, you could always segment your
backups so that different data is stored on each drive. For example, you
might have your system on one drive, personal data on another, and work
material on the third. This allows for incremental backups without being
redundant.

Hope that helps!

 HI!

I'm using Retrospect 4.3, an iBookSE and 3 VST USB Hard drives (6 gigs each).

At present I'm using the "duplicate" feature. This results in 3 backup
sets. However, I can't leave the USB connectors in hubs because the VST
drives appear to each have their own desktops and the result is clutter.

Would you recommend - is it possible - that I use the three VST external
drives for one big incremental backup set. If so, I know it wouldn't be a
Macintosh file, which is contained on one disk. However, would it be like
 using Jaz or Zip disks?

I guess my question is what is the best way to back up with the new large
size (6 gig each, for 18 gigs total; iBook has 6 gigs too) external
drives under USB? I can't keep them all connected at the same time,
unless perhaps, doing a normal incremental backup would avoid the destop
clutter problem. Otherwise, I would just keep one plugged in at a time.

Would 4.3 know to jump to the next VST drive when one got filled up?

Thank you in advance for any time and effort in answering my question. I
want the best backup scheme possible, which is why I'm using Retrospect
 to begin with. :-)

Re: 16 MB catalog limit in 4.3

2000-09-06 Thread Irena Solomon

You're absolutely right; the catalog file for a file backup set is different
than a tape catalog. Unlike other types of backup sets, a file backup set
does not have a separate catalog file. Its catalog is stored internally in
the file itself, in its resource fork. (Its data fork contains the backed-up
files.) There is no built in limit to the size of a tape catalog.

If this info about a 16MB catalog is true, then why are my catalogs
34MB for a 2 tape VXA set archive (that I will be letting grow

compression) on a hfs+ formatted drive? Or is this specific to a
backup to a single file, and not to a tape? Are catalogs for tape
backups handled differently, or is there some built in limit on them
 also?

Stewart is correct. A file backup set's catalog is stored in the file's
resource fork, which cannot grow past 16 MB in size. This issue is covered
in the 4.3 Read Me and Retrospect Help.

Solving this problem requires *significant* changes to Retrospect's backup
set architecture--it's not a simple matter. We are working to address this
 issue with a future release.

In the meantime, the Retrospect Help file suggests the following
 workarounds:

o Perform a recycle backup to the file backup set, which
clears the catalog and starts anew. (Backed-up data in
 the set is removed.)

o Perform a new media backup to the file backup set, which
creates a new, empty file with an empty catalog. (The
old file is left intact with its backed-up data.)

o Do not try to copy so many files or volumes to the file
backup set. Consider creating separate backup sets for
 different volumes.

o Stop using file backup sets and instead use CDs, disks,
or tapes. You may transfer backed-up data in file backup
sets to other kinds of backup sets.

o Leave the catalog compression option on (it is on by
default) to help keep down the size of catalogs.

 I hope this helps.

Re: Catalog out of sync

2000-08-29 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi there,

The "Catalog out of sync" error is covered in the Error Messages section of
the Dantz website.

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=error

Here's what it says:

--

Catalog out of sync

Retrospect was unable to update the catalog the last time it copied data to
this backup set. This may have been due to equipment failure or power
failure, or was caused by a full disk or by a lack of memory.

Repair the catalog. See "Updating a Catalog" in chapter 9 of the Retrospect
User's Guide.

If updating the catalog does not eliminate the "catalog out of sync" error,
Retrospect cannot add files to that tape. You have three options:

o Perform a recycle backup, which resets the catalog and erases
the media, removing its existing backup files.

o Skip to a new medium with media action option (page 148 of the
Retrospect User's Guide), forcing Retrospect to use a new piece
of media for the next backup.

o Create a new backup set and do a backup to new media.

I hope this helps!

Re: Backup set comparison question....

2000-08-28 Thread Irena Solomon

You can determine what was on a bad tape by clicking on Configure - Backup
Sets, selecting the Backup Set to which it belongs and marking the damaged
tape "missing." Then go through the motions of a search and retrieval
(Immediate - Restore - Search) and click on searching when you have
selected the Backup Set and a destination drive. Make sure you're searching
for "file name contains (BLANK)," and let the search proceed. Click on files
chosen. The damaged tape's files will show starbursts next to the file name.
Checkmarks and no stars mean the file is on a good tape. Go to the View
Options menu and select Sorted Files - No Folders as the layout on the Mac,
or hit Ctrl+H to toggle between Hierarchical and Sorted views in Windows.
Sorting by backup date should group all files on the missing tape together
in the list. Note that you don't actually want to complete the restore; this
is just the simplest way to get such a list of the files on that tape.

I am suffering probably the perfect example of Murphy's law as it applies to
 backup

 - hard disk completely fails ( becomes invisible to the OS and all disk
 utilities)

 - one day before this, our APS HyperDAT Pro has failed, first chewing a
tape, then ends up with another tape stuck permanently in the drive ( at
least the drive was under warranty , by 10 days).

 - Trying to restore (using an overnighted replacement HyperDAT Pro drive)
from the last good backup gives a -205 error, with a complete lock-up of
RetroSpect and SCSI bus requiring a reboot, making me really popular with
 my users.

 - Assuming the -205 error + SCSI lockup indicates a SCSI issue ( since the
replacement is SCSI LVD) I try various SCSI hoodoo measures ( new cable, new
card etc), but finally discover that it is due to some kind of tape error. I
still find this a bit perplexing that a bad tape can cause a complete and
 irrecoverable SCSI lockup.

 - So finally I was able to recover one complete backup from the backup set
one earlier than the problematic one above.
I can still recover some files from a newer backup set "as required", as
long as I steer clear of the bad tape area. ( trial and error)

 My question is this...

Is there any way in Retrospect to ask

"Show me all the files in Backup Set A[006] (i.e.bad tapes) that are newer
than the files in Backup Set B[004] (good tapes)", so I know what files are
 missing?

Re: Retrospect and DualBoot

2000-08-24 Thread Irena Solomon

On dual-boot Windows systems, you have to install the Windows client
software twice‹once for each operating system. You may install the client
either into the same directory under each operating system or into a
different directory for each operating system; neither choice has an impact
on the performance of the client. Each installation of the client updates
the registry information accordingly. The registry in each operating system
contains unique entries for each client installation, regardless of whether
the client was installed into the same or different directories.

In order to ensure that the backup computer will find this client computer
regardless of the active operating system, you need to activate the client
under each operating system. The same IP address, client name, security code
must be used for each activation. After activating the client under the
first operating system, you will need to forget the client out of the Client
Database, reboot the client into the second operating system and then
activate it again. Once the client is activated under both operating systems
identically, the backup computer will be able to recognize the client booted
under either operating system.

Re: Error

2000-08-24 Thread Irena Solomon

You're probably receiving error -1017 when running automatically because the
Retrospect Launcher service (the service that allows Retrospect to
autolaunch) is configured to log in as a user that does not have access to
this network volume (I'm assuming this is a Microsoft Networking volume).

Windows NT 4.0
1. Open the Services Control Panel.
2. Select Retrospect Launcher and then click the Startup button.
3. In the ³Log On As² section select This Account. LocalSystem will appear
in the field to the right.
4. Change ³LocalSystem² to the account you want to use and then enter your
password in the two password fields. (This allows automatic backup while
logged in as the specified account, or while logged out.)
5. Restart Windows.

For step 4: this user has to be a local administrator, or member of the
local administrators group.

Re: Retrospect and OS 9

2000-08-23 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Jim,

Because the Retrospect application and preferences are associated with a
particular user account, Retrospect is unable to function in unattended mode
if a user is not logged in. A scheduled script will not be able to run and a
Backup Server script will stop as soon as the computer is in the login
screen mode. Unfortunately there isn't much we can tweak, since the
operations of the computer are controlled according to the configuration of
the active User Account.

In your situation, I would recommend configuring Retrospect to restart your
machine after executing a script under Special - Preferences - Unattended.
Before leaving for the night, while still logged into the Mac, run the
script by selecting it from the run menu within Retrospect. The computer
will be left in the login window after the backup and restart.

At this time, I'm afraid you won't be able to do unattended backups if you
must log out of your computer regularly.

Under Multiple User mode, the OS does not recognize certain folders as
Special Folders, so the special folder selector conditions will not work
properly in your custom selectors. You will need to define custom selectors
that include those folders by name instead.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to give us a call.

Best Regards,
Irena

screen mode using Multiple Users, as I find that some of my cohorts
in my office like to "use" my computer when I'm away (and locked
doors aren't possible here and notes go unheeded).

The explanations for the work-arounds on your web page below:

"Mac OS 9's Multiple Users prevents Retrospect from launching
automatically to execute its scheduled scripts. Before you leave the
backup Macintosh, start Retrospect manually from within Multiple
Users. This allows Retrospect to run scripts as scheduled." and:

"The workaround for local backups with Retrospect is to log in as an
 owner before backing up."

As the backup admin, I'd prefer to be able to logout of the server
(putting it into the login screen mode), have Retrospect launch
either a script or Backup Server, and be able to backup both network
and local drives, as I use the machine extensively during the day for
all my other network admin work, and only backup in the eve/night.

So, other than the "feature" of Retro 4.3/Multiple Users not allowing
Retro to autolaunch is their any way for Dantz to tweak Retro to
override Multiple Users on the backup computer to allow it to launch,
even when only the login screen is present, and then proceed to back
up the entire local computer and also backup network clients? That
would be a great advantage to those of us network admins that have
"open shops" without doors. Also, is Dantz working to solve/work
around the special folder selector conditions in custom selectors
with those computers using Multiple Users?

Re: Feeling Stupid

2000-08-21 Thread Irena Solomon

Hi Derek,

There are a few factors that may be preventing your scripts for running, in
addition to the suggestions already offered.

If Retrospect is no longer autolaunching, first verify that you've got it
set to automatically launch. Go to SpecialPreferences from the Retrospect
Directory and click Notification. Is "Autolaunch Retrospect" checked?

Does Retrospect try to run a script right after you start it, but not at the
specified time? If not, verify that your script is scheduled correctly. Go
to AutomatePreview from the Retrospect Directory. Are there scripts
scheduled to run? If there are, is the top one scheduled to run soon (as
opposed to months or years in the future)? If it is scheduled to run some
time in the future, you may have deferred execution of the script. Change
this by editing your script.

If there are no scripts scheduled to run, you need to reschedule your
scripts. Go to AutomateScripts from the Retrospect Directory to do this.

If Retrospect tries to run a script right after you launch the program,
Retro.Startup, may be damaged. Replace it by doing the following: quit
Retrospect, trash Retro.Startup, restart the computer, launch and quit
Retrospect, then restart the Mac again. This will produce a fresh copy of
Retro.Startup.

Also, if you are running Mac OS 9 and have Multiple Users turned on,
Retrospect will not automatically launch. For a full Mac OS 9 compatibility
statement, please go to

http://www.dantz.com/index.php3?SCREEN=os9

If your script still isn't running, it may be time to give tech support a
call when you can be in front of your computer.

I guess I might just be confused on how this is "supposed" to work,

which part of it is wrong. ;-)

[ First, I've confirmed that Retro.Startup is in the extensions
folder, as I know this is a common source of problems]

I have created a scheduled-backup script, for 00:15 every morning.

 I have tried:
 (a) quitting Retrospect, thinking that some automated process would
start Retrospect back up after midnight to start up the backup
 (b) left Retrospect running (running idle, but running) all day, so
that hopefully at 12:15am, it would wake up and start the backup
 process.

Neither process worked, so I'm at a loss as to exactly how this
SHOULD be done. Can someone give me sorta a step-by-step of what I'm
doing wrong? Unless I'm blind as well, I don't see any "simple
 walkthrough" in the manual. :(

Re: a simple (admittedly newby) question

2000-08-14 Thread Irena Solomon

Hello,

This has to do with the difference between the logical size of a file (or
how many bytes of data in contains) and it's physical size (or how much
space it takes up on the disk on which it resides.)

Every Macintosh volume only formats to 65,636 allocation blocks, regardless
of it's capacity. For instance, a 128MB hard drive formats to 65,636 1kb
blocks, whereas a 1G hard drive formats to 65,636 16kb blocks. A file that
takes only 1kb on the 128MB drive, when transferred to the 1G drive, will
appear as a 16kb file. Files fill the full allocation block, even if there
is as little as a single byte of data in the block, since different files
are not allowed to co-habit in the same blocks. For more information on
black allocation size, see Tech Note 412 at:

In making selectors, when using file size as a
selector criteria, you get a choice as to:

 - file size on disk
 - file size used

What's the difference between the terms
"on disk" and "used"? I understand that files have
"slack space", so that depending on your file system's
cluster size even, say, a 3-byte file actually takes
up, say, 1024 bytes on your drive. And I suspect
that's exactly the difference between the terms "on
disk" and "used". It's just that I'm not sure which
would be which, is all. In the example I gave, would the
"file size on disk" be 3 bytes and the "file size used"
be 1024 bytes, or is it the other way around?

BTW, as a Retrospect newby, I do have a handful of
other probably really basic questions that have come
up while experimenting with the software in order to
learn it. Is this an okay place to ask those? Thanks.

Regardless of the way the disk is formatted (HFS or HFS+ on the Mac side,
FAT16, FAT32 or NTFS on Windows) a file must be written to blocks and will
occupy any single block in it's entirety. Certain utilities allow you to
designate a block size as small as 1K, but by default they are typically
larger.

Re: Error -1101 and lost catalog file

2000-08-14 Thread Irena Solomon

Hello Aaron,

If you are continuously getting corrupted catalogs, try running
ScanDisk/Chkdsk on the volume where the catalog is stored. You may also want
to store the catalog elsewhere on your hard drive. The large size of your
catalog wouldn't make it any more susceptible to corruption.

As a precaution, it may be a good idea to keep a copy of the most recent
catalog on another volume. This way a corrupt current catalog will require
only an update from the copy, instead of a complete recreation.

You also mention memory errors, although I don't see any detailed here. if
you'd like to look into these, please give tech support a call.

 Hi Retrospect Users,

I have been using retrospect backup 5.1 (100 user license) for NT backups
over the last 6 months with hardly any problems.

I am only running one backup set at a time on our NT server to one tape drive
(DDS3) but am using two scripts (desktops scheduled to start at 10pm each day,
laptops via backup server) to the one tape backup set.

About once every 3 weeks I get an error -1101 and I lose the catalog file.
Although I have added several tapes to the tape backup set. The error is:

"Can't access backup set . error -1101 (file/directory not found)"

The catalog on disk becomes corrupt I can't reload the .rbc file manually:

"Update catalog - File is not a catalog or is heavily damaged"

The first time this happened I was getting low virtual memory errors
(I have 128MB in the machine+196 swapfile) and started a new backup set using
 a
compressed catalog. But this also failed.

My catalog files range from 110MB - 180MB in size. I guess this is resonably
large - even for a compressed catalog. I know the manual gives the expected
 size for every n-thousand files.

 I am backing up 35 NT workstations + 5 NT servers + 10 win95/98 laptops using
Normal backup and I haven't recycled any tapes.

When I start a new tape with only one scheduled (normal/incrementalplus)
 backup
of everything set my catalog file (uncompressed) is around 100MB with about
30GB of data being backed up first time around.

Has anyone else had these problems? I guess adding more RAM would postpone
the memory errors but I am looking at adding more machines to be backed
up in the next few weeks.

 Thanks

 Aaron
